Former UH safety Jacob Patek  and receiver C.J. Hawthorne will be reunited at the Montreal Alouettes’ training camp in two weeks. Patek said he was invited last week, and he said Hawthorne signed with the Canadian Football League team two weeks ago. They were roommates at UH.

* * * * *

Not sure what this means, but  middle linebacker Mana Lolotai says to post: “Spencer Smith and Richard Torres are the faces of UH football.”

Special birthday wishes to d1島.

And, also, happy birthday to Peaches, Bill Stutzmann and London Sapolu.

  19. Garret May 19, 2010 3:40 am

San Diego State’s President talked about expansion to the Idaho Statesman.

“I expect the conversation to be, ‘Is it time to expand?’ That’s sort of the threshold question,” he said. “In the past, it’s tended toward, ‘No, it’s not. We don’t see any reason to change.’ My personal opinion is there are more of my colleagues that are likely to say yes.”

If the league decides to expand, Boise State is expected to be its first choice. Weber said, however, it is possible to opt for expansion and then not come to agreement on the team to invite.

Seven of the nine presidents must vote in favor of inviting a new member.

Weber, who has been president at San Diego State since 1996, was part of the decision to form the Mountain West in 1998 by breaking away from the Western Athletic Conference and to invite TCU in 2004. He said the league has made tremendous progress in its brief history. Weber said the decision should not be based on potential defections from the league, such as Utah, BYU or TCU.

“I’m more interested in building for the future,” he said, “more interested in offense than defense.”

  29. Stretch May 19, 2010 5:15 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Coach Arnold – there were a couple of recruits who had more school work to complete before they can enroll at UH. How confident are you they are going to pass their classes to be able to play basketball here??

  30. NYUH May 19, 2010 5:23 am

    D1:

Are you talking about Ferd’s article?
    http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/20100519/COLUMNISTS06/5190350/Warriors++WAC+s+mystery+team

A sampling of the early run of annual preseason football magazines, which shows UH picked from fifth to eighth, underlines the conflicted appraisal. Especially as some who are down on the Warriors are, nevertheless, not ruling UH out as a team that could be the WAC’s season surprise.

  31. Garret May 19, 2010 5:32 am

Best wishes to Patek and Hawthorne!

  32. mctruck May 19, 2010 5:34 am

If the MWC is expecting the departures of it’s top three/four teams which would greatly decrease it’s luster, why would any WAC team desire to leave for , “greener-pastures?”
It would seem to me that the WAC would be holding all the marbles, no??

  33. Garret May 19, 2010 5:34 am

Sporting News picking UH to finish 8th in the WAC was a surprise to me.

  34. d1島 May 19, 2010 5:37 am

    NYUH,

Although I share the concern about the OL, I suppose as a fan (and season ticket holder) I am more confident than placing the Warriors at the bottom of the pile….

  35. Garret May 19, 2010 5:41 am

    mctruck,

The MWC is expected to lose maybe 2 of their top teams due to expansion (Utah and BYU, though the Big 12 is talking about Louisville or Memphis instead of BYU). Even if they lose 2 of their top teams, they would still satisfy 2 of the 3 AQ conditions if they add BSU.

If the MWC just loses 1 team and adds 2 teams with high computer rankings over the past 2 years, they could actually satisfy *all* of the 3 AQ requirements and become an AQ conference in 2012. If the Big 12 takes Colorado State (not likely, but there have been speculation that CSU would replace Colorado to keep a team in that state), that would actually help raise the MWC’s AQ chance.

The TV deals mean that the MWC gets more than 3x the TV money than the WAC. They also have a better men’s basketball conference which brings in a lot of money.

  36. Loa May 19, 2010 5:41 am

    morning gang!

    happy birthday d1島 & peaches!

  37. Garret May 19, 2010 5:42 am

    d1shima,

I would put UH at around #4 in the preseason predictions–I could see the predictors having BSU, Fresno St., and Nevada ahead of UH. But maybe Sporting News was worried about the inexperienced OL *and* the turmoil at QB?

  38. mctruck May 19, 2010 5:47 am

    Garrett,

Seems to me that the PAC10 loves in-state combo’s such as, Washington/Washington St.; Arizona/Arizona St., and it wouldn’t surprise me that they’d go with, BYU/Utah??, just my thinking.

  39. Garret May 19, 2010 5:49 am

    mctruck,

The Pac-10 already said that they would NOT invite 2 teams from the same state. The way that TV deals work now is that you get credit for the TV viewers in the entire state where you have a team…having 2 teams gives you *no* extra TV money. Also, the Pac-10 plays a lot of games on Sunday and plans to maximize their TV money by having sports events on Sunday…but BYU doesn’t play on Sunday.

  40. mctruck May 19, 2010 5:49 am

    or, even, Colorado/Colorado St.

  41. mctruck May 19, 2010 5:53 am

So, as desireable as BYU might be….they might be left out in the cold because of their, “no Sunday-play?”

  42. Garret May 19, 2010 5:56 am

    mctruck,

Yes, BYU may be stuck with the MWC. However, if they and TCU (too many Texas schools already in the Big 12) are forced to stay, that could mean that the MWC would become an AQ conference.

  43. Garret May 19, 2010 5:58 am

If the MWC only loses Utah, I would hope that UH would get invited to join them. UH’s only chance is for the MWC to lose 3+ teams (weakening them and forcing them to add many teams) or for Nevada/Fresno/UH to agree to move together or not at all. However, I’m guessing that Nevada and Fresno would happily stab UH in the back to jump to the MWC.

  44. mctruck May 19, 2010 6:00 am

    got-cha….true, true.

    Adrian Klemm update!

Believe it or not, that’s the first draft pick of the Bill Belichick Era in New England. The Patriots took him with the 46th pick in the 2000 Draft (the first-rounder went to the Jets for Belichick himself … Which worked out), and this Adrian Klemm character won three Super Bowl rings as a Patriots.

Turns out, he’s caught on with his old college coach, June Jones, at SMU, where he’s now serving as offensive line coach.

Talking with SN’s college football man Dave Curtis, Klemm said, “The Super Bowl rings definitely open some doors. The kids don’t always know, but the coaches who follow football know my background. It shouldn’t be like this, but what I say carries more weight. They perceive me to know a little more. It’s an advantage when I recruit.”

    Coach Gib,

Will your recruits be coming to Hawaii early during the summer or will they be showing up for the fall semester?
Will some of them be playing in the local NCAA summer league games? In the past, previous UH players would keep their game going in the offseason with this competition during the summer. Just wondering if we’ll get to see them in action before Midnight/Twilight Ohana(thanks for bringing this back btw!).

What Ferd’s article shows is that perception is reality. BSU is perceived to be the best and rightly so. Does anyone remember the loss they experienced at the Hawaii Bowl? I don’t believe the writers even remember that they played in it. I believe that the writers only remember BSU’s appearances in the BCS bowls.

SO, even when BSU stumbles the writers don’t notice. Why? It’s because the distance bewteen them and the rest of the WAC is perceived to be a deep and wide split.

UH, well it was posted correctly in a previous blog when the author stated that we’ve fallen tremendously from the 12-0 to where we currently reside. And, let’s make no bones about it, until Mac wins and wins big, consistently, the measuring stick still resides with JJ. When he left that perception of success, winning and legitimately challenging BSU and FSU for the top left with him. Like BSU, even when JJ had a bad year, the perception amongst the writers was, “this guy can pull rabbits out of his hat”, so they never relegated UH to the also ran pile for long. A glimmer of the potential to win and UH was right back near the top, given a fighters chance to challenge.

Like it or not, Mac needs to win big, convincingly and sustain that. And, because we’re the “ugly duckling” member of the conference (who BTW plays when no one really cares. All other teams have played and posted scores), we need to do it, with the same JJ bravado.

  69. Da Punchbowl Kid May 19, 2010 7:56 am

    Coach Arnold-
Congrats for the terrific start as the new head coach. Here’s a gimme question for you:

What can the fans expect from the team this season? What style of play are we going to see, and what are your win-loss goals for the season as well as WAC play?

  70. Mike May 19, 2010 8:07 am

    Coach Gib,

How did Joston Thomas’ visit go this past weekend? From his facebook page, it seems that he may have a difficult time adjusting to the culture of Hawaii.

  71. Garret May 19, 2010 8:07 am

    In men’s basketball:

2007-2008: BSU won the WAC with a 25-9 record. UH was 11-19.
    2008-2009: BSU was 19-13, UH was 13-17.
Last season, BSU was 5 games better than UH.

BSU played in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in 2008 and had a decent season the following year.

I think that the biggest women’s sport is soccer and BSU won the WAC this year.

BSU also won the WAC in women’s basketball in 2008 (23-7), had a winning record in 2008-2009, and their women’s team went 19-12 last season. We don’t want to compare that to UH (thanks to HF for sticking us with Bolla).

  78. Garret May 19, 2010 9:10 am

Colt *needs* to impress his team this offseason and do well in the preseason for his NFL career to have a chance. If Washington won’t even give him practice reps in OTAs, how is he supposed to prove himself this offseason?

It looks like the NFL is preparing for a lockout in 2011…no NFL season in 2011 would be sad. The NFL owners sure are protected–they get their TV money even if there are no games played! With no players to play and all the TV money, they would probably make a bigger profit by extending the lockout.

I know that they’ve renegotiated every assistant coach’s contract to envision a lockout, and I know their lead negotiator now is a guy named Bob Batterman, who locked out hockey for a year. They also negotiated every one of the television contracts, FOX, NBC, CBS and DirecTV with this in mind. They put a clause in those contracts to guarantee that the NFL gets every dime even if the games aren’t played.

Zirin: So if there are no games they still get their TV money?

Smith: They get $4 billion. Chad Ochocinco asked me at the draft, on a scale of 1 to 10 where do you see the possibility of a lockout? I’d put it at about a 14.

Zirin: I spoke to an NFL owner who said the owners will always win against the players because players, even though they make a lot of money, live pay check to pay check.

  90. Garret May 19, 2010 9:30 am

But on our side of the table, the average career for a football player is 3.6 years. It takes you three years and three games in order to get five years of health care coverage when you’re done playing. If you play any less than three years you don’t get any health care coverage when you tire. If you play three years and three games, you still only get five years.

Zirin: What if you play 15 years?

Smith: Five years. If you play 13 years, it’s five years; 12 years, it’s five years. So you take a guy who graduates from college at 21, 22, the average career is 3.6 years, let’s say he plays four years. Players are retiring at the ripe old age of 26, 27. Five years of health care coverage and everything after that, every injury you have is a preexisting condition. Try to find insurance for that.

  91. Garret May 19, 2010 9:33 am

    d1shima,

From the photo I saw, the UH football offices have a huge mural of Richard Torres up now. Maybe there is another mural of Spencer Smith? Mack is a defensive coach at heart, so maybe they only put murals up of defensive players…I would think that Salas or Colt might be a good choice if they were going to feature on offensive player.

  92. al May 19, 2010 9:34 am

stevem….no worry got tea and rice. chazuke is good.

btw, they have lobster as slugger suggested at 10.99 per order when accompanied with one entree. i wonder if the buffet will qualify?

i’ve had the black bean and the ginger/onion/garlic. they are both great stuff.

  93. d1島 May 19, 2010 9:35 am

    Garret,

I wonder if the insurance companies would be interested in “contemporaneous records” of injuries that college athletes may accumulate during their college careers?

  94. Buffoman May 19, 2010 9:50 am

Please answer this if you are knowledgeable on the subject as I am not, and am a bit lost.

Why do we schedule games like we did against Stanford (MBB) only to put forth an effort that really did not do anything but help Stanford and hurt us (recruiting, RPI, perception of strength, or lack thereof,etc..)

If we go up to tune up to play a conference game, why wouldn’t we play our players who’ll play? If it’s “for fun” for the guys who don’t usually play, why not play a team that we would have a bteer shot at winning? A win is a win, but loosing and having that on the record when selection time rolls along does not help.

I don’t know the answer. Maybe I’m missing something, but that seemed to be a wasted expense, time and effort.

  95. Slugger May 19, 2010 9:50 am

    al,

The buffet doesn’t qualify. If we want lobster, we’ll have to order it in addition to the buffet.

K, better go toss slugs out of the garden before lunch.

    Esme & whoosh…

  99. Derek May 19, 2010 10:15 am

    To Coach Arnold:
    1) We have or had 3 walk-on players in Lutu, Enos, and Albrectson. Will you we keeping them or will you get some new walk-ons who can play?
Lutu, as a G, had a 29% free throw shooting average! Yikes. The other 2 hardly smelled the game. I think we can do better. What do you think?
The kid from Iolani who was the MVP of the state tournament can shoot better than these guys.
    2) What is the team goal for free throw shooting?
    3) What do you think about the 2010 Arnold’s basketball slogan of “We’ll be baack!”

does men’s basketball have like a fall camp period similar to baseball’s fall camp and football’s spring camp?

if so when are these permissable, number of days, and has anyone ever thought of having a publicly held intra-squad scrimmage at the end of the camp? i bet it would draw thousands and would be a great way to kick off the arnold’s army era.

    Happy B-Day to D1 and Peaches…have a great day!

Garret…caught up on yesterevening post..mahalos for the Tsaikoanalysis… hurry up and make your billions…then you can start a new conference for us….$1.86 BILLION!?!!? for a tv contract?….liked your MWC conference line up…dreams…soemtimes they do come true…

Paka…regarding the “H”…took a look at the one on my truck and noticed the “TM” at the bottom…not a copyright but registered trademark…not sure if this means something else but I do agree with you about lawyers getting involved with athlethics. In the pros, can’t do with out them but in school….another story and argument. Pushing for a game with smu and the Warriors..sometime soon before I pass on!….

  104. Buffoman May 19, 2010 10:43 am

D-1 Okay, but that did not change or should not have changed when they actually played. Beating Stanford would have helped the RPI and would have helped in the post season. It just did not appear that they had the best line up in there to do the job on the mound, take nothing away from Harrison Kuroda.

And please, if we cannot win one game against SJSU in the last conference game, we don’t belong in post season conference play.

management appears to be a bit askew, IMHO.

“Battle for 3rd string QB spot: Richard Bartel is getting most third-team snaps over Colt Brennan so far today.”

could mean a couple of things…Colt is leading candidate and they want to see if Bartel can show them something or (only for today so far)….Colt on the way out…me thinks it’s the first scenario…

  106. Garret May 19, 2010 11:21 am

    NorthShoreFan,

The SEC got $3.1 billion for their TV contract! The scary thing is that the Big 10 TV Network makes the Big 10 more money than the SEC gets from that contract…makes the SEC’s $3.1 billion deal actually look small.

UH offered an OL in SoCal.

Covina (Calif.) South Hills offensive lineman Siaosi Aiono, one of the top offensive linemen in Southern California, has landed his third offer.

“Hawaii has offered Siaosi,” said James Escarcega of SGV/IE Recruiting.

The Warriors join BYU and San Jose State in offering Aiono.

Last month, he earned OL MVP honors at the Los Angeles NFTC.

  108. Garret May 19, 2010 11:27 am

Ryan Mouton is behind another 2nd year player (drafted a few rounds after he was drafted) at CB, but he’s doing well in practice in his battle for that CB spot.

Cornerback Jason McCourty continues to work with the first team defense, and has been solid. But Ryan Mouton, another second-year cornerback, has had a couple of good days. Mouton broke up a pass intended for Washington across the middle and was consistently around the ball.

  109. Garret May 19, 2010 11:28 am

Article about the battle for the Titans starting CB spot.

McCourty has continued to take the first-team reps during April and May mini-camp, but coaches have said Mouton has the potential needed to become a starter in the league. Confidence seemed to be the biggest issue with the Houston native after he began his rookie season with a handful of sub-par games, but Mouton said a full offseason to reflect on 2009 performances has allowed him to mature on the field.

”I just have to prove that I’m accountable,” Mouton said. ”Prove that my other teammates can trust me and prove that I can get the job done.”

”You come out and compete every day,” Mouton said. ”Try to get better and let the rest handle itself. You know [the opportunity] is there. You have to just go out and do what you have to do. You have to take the reps that you get and just run with it.”

  110. Not an Expert May 19, 2010 11:50 am

Per the information from Garret, regarding the landscape of college athletics and how the money flows, it appears that conference reallignment and how its done will bring more money (guarantees) to the schools than the BCS games. Not being chump change the BCS bowl payouts will be like icing on the cake.

Is there any collusion going on by raiding the teams from the conferences that may qualify as a BCS, (MWC, Conference USA) so in turn they are able to control their monopoly? Buying out the competition.

By the way when you go to Espn.com and look at the sight of UH’s football, the video they have on there is showing how Wisconsin ran over Hawaii. A negative image not really helping the status of the football program. Perception can go a long way in helping or hurting UH.

Which brings me back to the idea of how UH needs to be pro active in their marketing of the school. They cannot be passive and wait for the dominos to fall and then react regarding realignment. Don’t follow the lead of the WAC commissioner. Really start thinking outside the box and at least put your best efforts forward. Donovan cannot do everything by himself regarding the realignment of the conferences. He needs a lot of support financially and by the powers that can make a difference. It could be devastating if Fresno and Neveda leaves too and UH is left in the WAC. Do we go back to the lower division? I sure hope not.

Go Bows, Go Warriors, Go Rainbow Warriors, Go Wahine!

  111. Garret May 19, 2010 12:17 pm

Colt update–the other update I posted said Colt had limited reps, but this report notes that he had at least 2 throws today.

Now for your regular Colt Brennan report: Everyone’s favorite QB had a very nice play where he hit TE Fred Davis near the left hash on an intermediate route after checking through his progressions. It was a great read. Earlier, Brennan underthrew a flag route to Davis. For what it’s worth, Grossman was the second quarterback taking reps.

RGM and Patrick Turner have been competing for Miami’s final WR spot on the roster. Patrick Turner was hurt today and will miss *all* of Miami’s OTAs. This means that RGM will get a LOT more reps and has an opportunity to get ahead of Turner in the battle for that roster spot.

Sparano said WR Pat Turner had been working hard during the early portions of the team’s workouts. That’s when he likely got hurt.

Patrick Turner had an undisclosed surgical procedure recently and will miss all of the OTAs

Ryan Grice-Mullen, Davone Bess, Marlon Moore, Taurus Johnson and Brian Hartline are working as the team’s primary kickoff and punt returners.

  123. Garret May 19, 2010 1:30 pm

Davone Bess is really making a difference in Miami’s community. His latest volunteer effort is on behalf of foster care.

Current Miami Dolphin player Davone Bess and former Fin Jeff Dellenbach know what it’s like to be part of a team. So they’ve joined forces with non-profit programs like Remember The Children and HANDY to help those in foster care achieve more.

“For some of these kids, they don’t have any one,” said Bess.

Bess and Dellenbach both back up their words with actions by taking part in mentoring along with athletic and afterschool programs; they say they can see the results.

UH offered an OT in California today. UH was the 3rd offer for both OL offered today.

Redlands (Calif.) offensive lineman Jordan Smith has picked up two more offers.

“Jordan was officially offered today by Hawaii,” said Redlands defensive backs coach Bryan Hornsby.

The Warriors followed his second offer, from Portland State, according to said Redlands recruiting coordinator John Peale.

San Diego State was the first to offer Smith

  126. A-House May 19, 2010 1:51 pm

Wonder if Michigan’s AD sees the writing on the wall that the Big 10 can be more profitable by getting a larger TV contract then counting on the BCS system.

Is he not the BCS “guru” – one who came up with the concept and executed it well to keep most of the BIG $$$ east of the Mississippi?

  127. A-House May 19, 2010 1:53 pm

Are the 2 California OL offers based on the scrutiny of Coach Shaw?

  128. Garret May 19, 2010 2:06 pm

    A-House,

TV contracts are for the *regular season* and are not affected by the BCS bowls. They could eliminate the BCS system and go back to the old system or go to a playoff system and the TV contracts would not be changed.

  129. Garret May 19, 2010 2:07 pm

    A-House,

I believe that all the OL offers are from Coach Shaw–that is what they said would be the case before.

ESPN’s Softball “expert” Graham Hays says “this is no longer a pitcher’s tournament”.

Danielle Lawrie, who as a freshman lost a super regional against Cat Osterman and Texas, is also a link to what’s fast becoming another era.

It was just four years ago when Alicia Hollowell led Arizona to a title with a pair of shutouts in the championship series against Northwestern. But for the sport of college softball, 2006 is starting to look a lot like 1968 did for Major League Baseball, when Bob Gibson led the National League with a 1.12 ERA and Denny McClain won 31 games for the Tigers.
Consider the lineup of pitchers that arrived in Oklahoma City for the Women’s College World Series four years ago: Monica Abbott, Katie Burkhart, Eileen Canney, Alicia Hollowell, Brianne McGowan, Cat Osterman, Anjelica Selden and Stephanie VanBrakle.

Seven of those de facto aces in 2006 struck out more than 10 batters per seven innings. Only 13 pitchers in this season’s NCAA tournament match that mark. Only eight play in BCS conferences. And only four pitch for seeded teams: Washington’s Lawrie, Alabama’s Kelsi Dunne, Michigan’s Jordan Taylor and Texas’ Blaire Luna.

Most teams would happily trade a slugger for an ace, but this is no longer a pitcher’s tournament.

Prior to the 2006 season, nine teams in NCAA history had averaged at least 1.4 home runs per game. As of last week, 11 teams were averaging that many this season alone. Arizona broke its own NCAA single-season home run record last season, a mark that had stood for most of a decade. Hawaii didn’t let the new record stand even a single full season.

If you want to win this year, you better be able to put the ball over the fence.

i checked the replay of the blog with coach Gib but it said it will be ready later in the day. Gib said that he has no immediate plans for Williams’ scholarship and he would like to use it for next year so that he has 4 scholarships which is a good number to pick up players for filling in weaknesses. also said that with the extra scholarship, its nice to know you have one in case there is a midseason transfer or a late season transfer. he does indicate that the one position that is probably lacking depth at is center and would be focusing on recruiting centers for next year. as per NCAA rules, he couldn’t comment on any indiviuals by name but has some on his radar. what i liked about him is, he said he will probably be spending July visiting the incoming recruits and their families, getting to know the players and families.

  165. Slugger May 19, 2010 7:58 pm

Coach Gib is going to rely on the players to work on their own summer conditioning with running and whatever was outlined in their summer handout. If they’re out of condition when they return in the fall, they’re running on the field instead of in the gym. I sure hope everyone works hard this summer.

Guess I should too before the T-Gates start up. 🙂

btw…did you know that new asst coach benjy taylor has a son.
a big son, 6’9″ tyler mcdaniels.
he completed his freshman year at lake michigan college (jc) and averaged 18 pts/7 reb per game.

not sure, but i am assuming that he has one more year at jc ball. out of hs he was a 3 star pf.

this morning on the bc show coach taylor was interviewed and he did mention that his son would be a warrior.

Sorry to have missed the CattleCall, but I was busy getting some good, no, GREAT news about my eyeballs.

BACK TO SPORTS: I know that most folks who hang out around here place football at the top of their lists, but we have six, possibly seven, “lesser” team sports which could keep UH at the top of the lists if we continue to recruit and support: Men’s & women’s volleyball; baseball; soccer; softball, men’s & women’s basketball. Yes, it’ll take three or four years in some instances and a lot of time & money, but we are not going to be hammered into obscurity by making UH a consistent winner in these sports.

However, I do think that we have to be hard-headed about football’s future in Hawai`i and not just roll over. The state, along with a number of private funders, has already or will be investing well over $100 million in upgrades & improvements over the next four years.

Furthermore, there is significant support in principle to re-think about how we should treat the entire Aloha Stadium property – everything from transit-oriented development to naming rights and a lot more.

That means we have to have a winning football team which is why I like Garret’s proposed conference alignment.

Off to bed – have a big public hearing tomorrow – errr today – so it’s off to bed.

I’ve been following your blog for a month or so and have picked up a ton of good information as well as enjoyed the way you’ve structured your site. I am attempting to run my own blog but I think its too general and I want to focus more on smaller topics. Being all things to all people is not all that its cracked up to be.
