Charlie Wade chat

Thanks again to Charlie Wade for appearing on today’s Warrior Beat Show. Some bits from the show:

• The exact dates for the 2011 home  schedule are awaiting approval. But Wade said that Penn State, Ball State and UCLA will play in next year’s Outrigger Invitational.

• The MPSF shot down a proposal, by a vote of 5-6-1, that would have made sets played to 25 points (instead of the current 30 points).

• UH is expected to put in a bid to host an NCAA tournament. Maybe 2013?

• There are 14 liberos competing to be the successor to Ric Cervantes.

Realistically, does anyone here on this blog believe that the warrior football team will have a winning season?……To tell you the truth, I definitely believe it will be another losing season for the warriors. There’s just no excitement anymore with the team. They have gone down in the dumps…Sad isn’t it????

Oh yeah by the way, eighth and ninth

  12. midnight May 18, 2010 12:57 am

    Hi Ralph,

Just checked the blog before going out for my morning walk, and exercise. Almost 6am now. Barbara and I can no longer go for our morning dips in Waikiki. We are ffffffaaaaaqarrrrrrrrrrr from the Pacific Ocean now!

Good Morning to all the other Tsaikos when you guys get up too!

  13. Slugger May 18, 2010 1:01 am

    Hi, midnight!

I’m being niele…there were police cars with sirens blaring going the wrong way on King St. towards town. Wonder what is happening?

  14. Slugger May 18, 2010 1:03 am

It’s noisy living right in town. We used to think hearing the train horn blow down the hill from my house in AZ was a little noisy. I never minded it, but these sirens get me up out of bed sometimes.

  15. Ralph May 18, 2010 1:03 am

good morning to you and Barbara, are you expecting a very hot summer in Dallas?

  16. Ralph May 18, 2010 1:04 am

slugger the bars are closing, people are staggering to their cars, keep off the streets.

  17. Slugger May 18, 2010 1:06 am

    midnight,

I can imagine you & Barb missing the morning swim. Do you have a pool you can go swimming in? The community center ought to have one. Not the same though. ((HUGS)) to you & Barbara.

All quiet on the eastern front…back to bed.

  18. Ralph May 18, 2010 1:08 am

we’re 3 games ahead of Sac State and last place in WAC baseball, and 1 game ahead of SJST, a team we play this week. Four crucial games, we need at least one to finish ahead of Sac State, down to the wire like last season final series.

  19. Slugger May 18, 2010 1:10 am

    ralph,

This was an all out car chase, I think. Over eight police cars with blue lights flashing, and sirens going. Driving all over, down Isenberg, then right on King = the wrong way, then up to Young or Beretania, and continuing toward town. Some police cars pursuing, and some coming in from other streets. I hope they caught the vehicle-person in the pursuit.

  20. Ralph May 18, 2010 1:10 am

We seem to be battling the wrong end of the WAC standing, rather than for the regular season championship, we are battling to stay out of last place.

  21. Slugger May 18, 2010 1:11 am

    Night!

  22. Garret May 18, 2010 4:04 am

    Al,

I’m sorry if I upset you in yesterday’s blog. I thought you were making predictions on where MWC teams might end up. I *do* see Utah and BYU possibly leaving the MWC like you said. TCU will definitely try to get to the Big 12, but their best hope is that some other big-money conference wants a TV footprint in Texas. There is even the chance that the Big 12 might want the TV sets in Colorado and take Colorado State or Air Force (but I’m guessing Louisville and Memphis are more likely).

  23. mctruck May 18, 2010 4:19 am

I can see UH ruling the WAC for years to come….providing BSU leaves to go to the depleted MWC.

  24. Midnight May 18, 2010 4:38 am

    Hi Ralph,

Back from my morning walk. Regarding the summer heat: I have not heard any comments yet about the impending summer heat. I guess it will be about the norm for this area. Record highs would be around 113, with lows in the 70s.

    Slugger:

Yes, we are investigating two community centers that are relatively nearby. You have to become members, paying somewhere around $15 for a year membership. They have pools plus other activities, like painting, sewing, etc.

I remember our apartment on Kalakaua Avenue, near Fort DeRussey. We heard sirens practically every day. Surprisingly, the road noise was not bad with the lanai door closed at the 12th floor level.

Here in Arlington, TX, our neighborhood is generally very quiet. I think all of my neighbors are younger than we are so they go to work….. Several of the neighbors have younger children, like say 3 out of 20 neighbors. Almost never hear any sirens.

    Back to lurking…….

  25. whitey May 18, 2010 4:43 am

d1, time to wake up. weather is nice in the pnw and great day to go shopping.

  27. Garret May 18, 2010 5:53 am

C-USA’s commissioner is quite open about conference realignment discussions with his conference schools. He has already proactively prepared for the possibility of losing teams and even already came up with a plan to possibly expand their conference.

“It’s OK to change conferences,” Banowsky said. “Unlike other conferences, we’re generally comfortable with that concept. We have no problem with having the conversation. We have it openly.

“We do believe, though, that while you’re on the team, you have to support the team. That’s something we talk about, and for the most part we’ve had a lot of support along those lines.”

Banowsky has been through this before. In the last round of conference realignment in 2005, C-USA changed perhaps more dramatically than any league in the history of college sports, losing Louisville, Cincinnati and South Florida as well as basketball-only members DePaul, Saint Louis, Marquette and Charlotte. C-USA responded by adding UCF, SMU, Rice, Marshall, Tulsa and UTEP to form a 12-team, all-sports league.

That experience puts C-USA in a unique position with respect to conference realignment, having recently gone through the kind of poaching that many fear will happen once the Big 10 decides how to expand.

“We learned a lot of lessons,” Banowsky said, “and some of the lessons we learned were that casting this in a loyalty/nonloyalty conversation or an emotionally charged conversation is counterproductive. What you want is the maximum number of participants to feel benefited from change.

“We will be ready, but we can’t stop what we’re doing and sit around and try and react to something that may or may not happen in a way that is fairly dramatic in impact. It’s too early to really know. We are spending a little more time on it and are more focused on it, but we’re not going to take our eye off the ball while we’re doing it.”

  28. Garret May 18, 2010 5:53 am

Banowsky revealed Monday that C-USA looked last year at the possibility of adding four teams as preemptive expansion, sending the idea up to the school presidents for consideration. Though the idea was eventually shot down, the league will continue to consider its options, especially as it renegotiates its television contract.

Question for Coach Wade? What is the biggest difference, if any, in coaching a men’s team vice a women’s team, other than the obvious physical difference?

  43. Stretch May 18, 2010 7:37 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

    Happy Birthday Paula Akana!!

Coach Wade – At Stanford, they allow students to have half a sideline pretty much right off the court. Do you think UH can do something similar? How about open seating for students next to the band?

  44. RupertDaStupert May 18, 2010 7:56 am

Book em Danno! Personally I wouod have picked newsman Stone Phillips to play Steve McGarrett. He has the same square jaws and steely look as Jack Lord. Of course I don’t know it Stone could act. Just a lurker opening his big mouth. What a great job Gib has done with the revcruiting. I only see a bright future ahead. Book em Gib!

    ST:

will the new profit sharing BCS plan apply to Boise St if, on 7/1/10, it accepts the MWC offer and represents the WAC in a BCS game in 2011?

me thinks that it should apply as they still belong to the WAC and a very, very nice “goodbye” present from Benson to Boise St.

  46. Kazz May 18, 2010 8:03 am

    Coach Wade,

What does our middle blocker situation look like for next season and do you see Jarrod Lofy contributing or competing for a starting position?

    Good morning all!

AL: Re #33. CC tomorrow? Same place? Same time?

  48. A-House May 18, 2010 8:04 am

    Coach Wade:

Hawaii still produces many very good VB players.

Your plan to steer them to UH? Any on the horizon for 2011 and 2012?

  49. Garret May 18, 2010 8:10 am

will the new profit sharing BCS plan apply to Boise St if, on 7/1/10, it accepts the MWC offer and represents the WAC in a BCS game in 2011?

me thinks that it should apply as they still belong to the WAC and a very, very nice “goodbye” present from Benson to Boise St.

    A-House,

If this is BSU’s last WAC season and they make a BCS bowl, the WAC rules say they will get $3 million (whether or not they are in the WAC when the money is paid out) and the other WAC schools will split the other $3 million that the WAC will get for sending a team to a BCS bowl.

If there are 2 non-AQ teams in BCS bowls (like that year), the higher ranked team will get $6 million for their conference and the lower ranked team will get $4.5 million for their conference. That is why last year BSU got $3 million for their BCS bowl money and the WAC schools split $1.5 million.

IF WAHINE WIN THEY PLAY WINNER OF STANFORD VS TEXAS TECH ON SATURDAY MAY 22ND AT 12PM HAWAII TIME.

Now, as Pomai suggested… let’s see if K-5 will tend to the masses and cover these games somehow…

  51. A-House May 18, 2010 8:18 am

    Garret:

So, when will the new WAC “profit sharing plan” ST mentioned be effective? from 2012?

would this be an incentive for all WC schools to become better and try make a BCS game?

Seems the WAC chances of being an at large invite be greater when Boise St moves to the MWC as the WAC and MWC are the only ones invited to a BCS game in the past 4 years. Boise ST must now be undefeated against BYU, Utah, and TCU (if it stays behind).

  54. Garret May 18, 2010 8:44 am

    A-House,

The WAC profit sharing plan that ST posted yesterday was just *his* idea. It has not been adopted by the WAC! In fact, I pointed out that the WAC adopted a rule that was basically the exact opposite of one of the things he suggested.

For going to a BCS game, the WAC’s new rule gives them $3 million *before* expenses. So, they will make far less profit by going to a BCS game than if they were in the MWC. If they go to a BCS game every single year in the WAC, they will make less money than the difference between the MWC’s TV money and the WAC’s TV money. The MWC has lower travel expenses, higher NCAA basketball revenue, and could get an automatic BCS spot starting in 2012.

So, BSU would get 3 or 4 times *more* money by joining the MWC and not making a BCS game than they would make if they went to a BCS game every year in the WAC. UH would actually LOSE money if they made a BCS game and had to go to the Orange Bowl. All of the other WAC schools would make a lot of money from UH making their next BCS bowl and UH would lose money…does that rule make sense?

The argument about BCS bowl money for the WAC has been completely eliminated by the new rule that Karl Benson and the WAC Presidents passed that gives half of the BCS money to the WAC schools that don’t make a BCS bowl. The WAC basically covers that expenses for people going to a BCS bowl (schools on the mainland might make a little profit, UH might lose a little money) and gives the BCS money to the teams *not* getting to the BCS game.

  55. vballfan1 May 18, 2010 9:01 am

    My questions for coach Wade.

Jonas started the season kind of slow and he still was the nation’s kill leader and newcomer of the year , do you think next season he will be a candidate for player of the year?

Shane Welch is going to train with the junior national team, do you think that will help prepare him for mpsf play?

  56. koakane May 18, 2010 9:04 am

garret since you have done lots of research on this what is the best senerio for UH and what other alternative are there for UH to ponder. sorry if you posted some info on this already

  57. Slugger May 18, 2010 9:05 am

    Coach Wade,

Kudos to Ric Cervantes & Josh Walker who sat with us during the donation collection at the softball game.

Does the men’s volleyball team have booster club support for fund-raising?

  58. Slugger May 18, 2010 9:09 am

    Coach Wade,

Did you attend the Kamehameha-Punahou championship volleyball match? Are there any seniors in HI you might be pursuing, or can you not say?

  59. jm2375 May 18, 2010 9:09 am

  62. papajoe2 May 18, 2010 9:17 am

since the only time that UH went to the BCS game, it seems like everybody and their family that worked for UH got a free ride to the game. what is the policy for UH should it go again in the future or do we even have a policy. maybe only those directly dealing with football and 1 guest allowed or something similar? any ideas on this? any policy? the time that we did go, it seems like fermain hrasier or UH didn’t have one and anybody within the school that wanted to go could go on UH’s tab.

  63. wafan May 18, 2010 9:18 am

We have the real school year. Seriously.

Who, in their right minds, goes to school without a/c in August and September? Geez, not the brightest decision-makers. HA!

As I have said before, if they took away every single a/c out of the state offices until every classroom had a/c . . . every classroom would have a/c in a matter of weeks.

  64. A-House May 18, 2010 9:20 am

    Garret:

BCS bowl “expenses” could be lower if UH does not bring all the “unnecessary” hanger-ons!

We are not privy to “who were the invited guests” to the Sugar Bowl and makes it difficult to wean out those who really should go to those who want the status of going at UH expense. I believe, and I apologize if I an incorrect, that several were “big” boosters of NaKoa. I don’t like and play politics so my first priority is those who really should go then “add” on those who really have a vested interest in going.

Upper campus, IMHO, does not really support athletics, at least I have yet to see the President and other high administrative type speak out to support athletics, so why should they be invited free of charge?

Also, what are the Bowl mandatory functions and who must attend? If so, then the Bowl should be responsible for their expenses; ie, UH President and Mrs.

For me, reduce the number going free to maximize profit for UH. If upper campus really wanted to help support UHAD, then politely refuse an invitation so allocation to “lower campus” can be reduced.

    But, what do I know????????

  65. wafan May 18, 2010 9:25 am

    A-House . . .

Geez, you are asking for accountability?!?!

    What will you expect next?

  66. (Jesse)James May 18, 2010 9:25 am

Good morning Tsaikos…hope all is well.

Congrats to Coach Wade…thanks for bringing life back to the program.. I can feel the excitement in the air building again.

  67. Kazz May 18, 2010 9:26 am

    Papajoe2,

That year, one had to stand back a little to appreciate the BIG picture. It was “beauty” and the “beast”. The unparalleled success of UH football at that time was unmatched and yes, it was a first for everyone, top to bottom, it was no excuse to let things get out of hand. It’s like when you win the lottery and all of a sudden you have family members you never thought you had calling you at 2am.

Stolen helmets, fake UH merchandise, people bombarding players with a dozen footballs to sell on eBay, etc… all the ugliness that comes with success.

While getting caught up in the fun, I too thought that many fans and administrators couldn’t handle the success and let things get out of control a bit.

  68. Kazz May 18, 2010 9:28 am

Hmmm… The recent posts got me thinking now…

If the Rainbow Wahine make it to the College Softball World Series, will Lingle and Co. hop on a plane to Oklahoma???

  69. Kazz May 18, 2010 9:31 am

Well, if the Wahine get to the World Series and Lingle jumps on that bandwagon too, it might be a bad thing as she can further justify cutting money from UH and pointing to the success of Wahine softball despite a lack of sufficient funding for UH athletics and UH as a whole… 🙄

    Bob Wagner was right!

  70. papajoe2 May 18, 2010 9:36 am

thanks Garret. i was hoping you would respond. so, as far as you know, we still don’t have a policy? shouldn’t this be done with since UH is a public institution? we probably won’t be going soon anyway, but with BSU out, our chances will improve. its nice to know that we do have one just in case. what about the basketball team? if we make the big dance or even the final 4. do we wait until the last minute? i don’t really like people getting a free ride if they had very little to do with a particular sport.
with the softbows playing in the regionals, will they be compensated? a few years ago, didn’t they make it to the finals? what was their compensation? i hope with the popularity of softball on the rise and numerous tv appearences throught out the nation, the program can actually make money (bracelets?). If they are compensated, maybe a payoff similar to the basketball tournament but, obviously on a smaller scale.

  71. Old Diver May 18, 2010 9:37 am

    Regarding # 64

Makes sense. The upper campus holding UHAD responsible for incurred debt, but wanting a free ride to a bowl games which increases that debt is nutty. I recall the Sugar Bowl list included family members, girl friends and a student worker my son took to a prom once in HS. Besides that my cousins friend who is one of the Doctor’s who is on the sidelines every game volunteering his services had to pay his own way for himself and his son. Clapp cleverly put his name on the list implying that UHAD paid his traveling expenses since he was on the same plane as the team.

  72. bluefintuna May 18, 2010 9:38 am

    Re-Kia’s contract

ST wrote that Kia signed a “one year contract” in yesterday’s blog. He also wrote an article on Kia’s signing in today’s paper.

Another paper’s writer wrote that Kia signed a “free-agent” contract.

My question is a “one year contract” the same as a “free-agent contract”?

Honestly, I’m confused. Because it seems to me that two different sources are reporting two different types of contracts that Kia signed. Or at least that’s how I interpret this. Hey maybe I’m wrong, but I was hoping to get some clarification.

Would a player signing a one year contract have a lock on making the team?

Would Satele, which was reported here of a signing a three year contract, be a lock on making the team, too?

  73. duffer (iPhone) May 18, 2010 9:39 am

    Aloha Coach Wade

Mahalo for bringing back the excitement of Warrior Volleyball! To bad the tsunami cancelled your visit to Maui.

What’s it like to have an “instigator” as a in law?

    Nah j/j Rob. 🙂

  74. papajoe2 May 18, 2010 9:45 am

Kazz # 67. speaking of fake UH merchandise, wouldn’t it be easier or profitable if you buy t-shirts, sweat shirts, etc. from a high school with the same logo as UH then go around selling them at the tailgate parking lot for a profit. you wouldn’t be infringing on UH’s rights because you are selling it as a high school’s merchandise. at UH’s store it’s really expensive.

  75. Pomai May 18, 2010 9:51 am

bluefintuna he is a “free-agent” who signed a “one year contract”, and no he does not have a lock on making the team.

  76. chawan_cut May 18, 2010 9:59 am

    Coach Wade,
Congrats on a great year and bringing Men’s VB back into the spotlight.
Hopefully we can convince the great local players to stay home. We’ve got good talent here as shown by what left the islands and played against us. They’re just down the road.

Is there any plans to bid to host another Final Four here? We just missed out on playing in it, which impacted the fan turnout for the teams that did make it, but now that we’ve got the program righted and steaming ahead, it would be great to host and win it in our own arena just like that team in red did.

  77. papajoe2 May 18, 2010 10:01 am

Garret, I thought the payout for a BCS game last year was $17million? or was it just certain games? i know that the bigger schools spend as much as UH did at the Sugar Bowl or even more but they have a bigger expense account within their school and probably even bigger and more boosters. The thing that bugs me is that, with such a big payout compared to a regular season game, how can we make very little profit or even lose money? TSHUCKS! maybe we shouldn’t win enough games to go if its only a celebration and we, as a state, cannot afford it. we could be the first team in NCAA history to decline a BCS invitation. hold on! don’t get all huhu. this is just a wild, unrealistic somment.

speaking of compensation, what compensation, it any, do we get for WAC playoff games? or does it go to the WAC office. some playoffs in the WAC are on TV. do we get anything from that or does the WAC use it to pay for the teams’ accommodations and travel? what about the MPSF volleyball playoffs? all these comments on the blog just got my dormant mind wondering.

great work. you seemed to have pumped the heart back into the players and in doing so they have performed like a team with one heart. what are some of the things that you say and do with your team day in and day out that sort of becomes the team’s mantra?

Kazz # 67. speaking of fake UH merchandise, wouldn’t it be easier or profitable if you buy t-shirts, sweat shirts, etc. from a high school with the same logo as UH then go around selling them at the tailgate parking lot for a profit.

I don’t condone or respect anyone doing this as this is ultimately illegal.

I think Hightower High School didn’t make any color alterations to OUR logo so they are infringing on copyrights, especially if they are being sold for profit for Hightower High School.

Still, anyone doing exactly what you described should be locked up or at least forced to eat and pay for Aloha Stadium food.

The Buti Groove company is/was smart. They cashed in on the UH football craze with their brand of plain green shirts with big white lettering that said: “BUCK FOISE” or “RUSH THE FIELD”. Later they released the “BOWS BFOR HOS” shirts which were also on a green shirt with a black and white rainbow in the corner.

Everyone knew what they meant and they didn’t have to pay a UH licensing fee as no H logos or “Hawaii” in the tapa font were used.

  91. papajoe2 May 18, 2010 10:23 am

Charlie and team, good job. i think you took the team farther than most people in the state and MPSF could have ever imagined. UH volleyball was getting stale before you showed up. now its exciting again. i like the way your team comes back after losing to the same team the night before. that’s the sigh of good coaching. can we expect more of the same next year. how will your players will handle the off season? will they sit back on their laurels or start working harder to gain what was ALMOST this past season?

  106. Garret May 18, 2010 11:21 am

    papajoe2,

Under the new BCS agreement (which Karl Benson and the WAC were one of the first to sign and the MWC was the last to sign), all of the non-AQ conferences are basically treated as one AQ conference. AQ Conferences get $18 million or so to split up among their members each year and they normally give their conference champion that plays in a BCS bowl a bonus from that to cover expenses and give them a reward for playing in a BCS game. People kept saying that Georgia earned $17 million for the Sugar Bowl while UH earned $4.5 million, which was WRONG. Georgia’s cut of the Sugar Bowl’s money was actually less than what UH got for playing in the same game.

All of the non-AQ conferences get $9 million to split up among themselves. They decided on a formula to split up the money, part of which is based on nonconference wins. So, the MWC gets a bigger share of that $9 million than the WAC.

If a non-AQ team makes a BCS bowl (under the new BCS contract that has happened every year since things are set up to let at least one non-AQ team in every year), the non-AQ conferences get another $9 million. $6 million of that money (I’m rounding all the numbers here so I don’t need to provide decimal places) goes to the conference of the team. That is why I say that the WAC gives $3 million to the team playing in a BCS bowl and splits the other $3 million among its members. The other $3 million goes to the *other* non-AQ conferences–for example, UH got something like $100k from TCU’s Fiesta Bowl money last year.

If an AQ Conference gets a second team in a BCS bowl, their conference get $4.5 million. So, when Georgia played in the Sugar Bowl against UH, they earned $4.5 million for their conference and had to split that money with their conference. If a second non-AQ team earns a BCS spot (like BSU last year), the lower rated team earns $4.5 million for their conference. See, the new BCS contract treats all the non-AQ teams like they are an AQ conference.

    Let me sum things up:
$9 million is split among the WAC, MWC, MAC, C-USA, and Sun Belt. Conferences that win more nonconference games get a bigger share.

$9 million goes to the non-AQ conferences if one non-AQ team makes a BCS bowl.
$3 million would go to a WAC team that makes the bowl
$3 million would be split by the WAC schools
$3 million would go to the other non-AQ conferences

The old system gave $4.5 million to the WAC team and $1.5 million was split among the WAC schools.

If a second non-AQ team makes a BCS bowl, the lower ranked team earns $4.5 million for their conference. If that is a WAC team:
$3 million would go to the WAC team
$1.5 million would be split by the WAC schools.

So, last year $22.5 million went to the non-AQ conferences, more than most AQ conferences got from the BCS. UH got their share of the guaranteed $9 million, their share of TCU’s $9 million, and their share of BSU’s $4.5 million.

Hopefully I summarized things okay and haven’t confused more people.

Garret #106 Huh?? nah, just kidding. still a little confused about last year’s non-AQ teams playing each other. Then the payday for that game only would still be split, though not equally, among all non AQ conferences? Did we (a non-AQ non playing BCS team) get more, same, or less than if they had Boise and TCU ( ? i forget already) playing some other AQ teams rather than themselves?

    Garret:

Read your explanation #108 and still wondering why an AQ conference is alloted $17 million and a “non-AQ” conference gets $9 million (such as the Sugar Bowl UH attended).

One would think that both schools, regardless if AQ or non-AQ, qualified for the bowl game and receive equal benefits; ie, payout $$$.

Under this formula, the AQ schools always get the “larger” share nothwithstanding how much the particpating school received. Since the SEC schools make so much $$$ from TV contract, they really don’t care how much they spend to attend the BCS bowl game whereas non-AQ schools must contend with large expenses which, as I stated earlier, can be mitigated by controlling how many “school” individuals attend the game.

For the Sugar Bowl, it is most unfortunate that UH medical staff were told that some cannot go or pay their own way whreas others who had NO connection with the football team got a free ride. It would take a tremendous amount of loyalty for these to keep their afflilication with UH.

  114. Darren May 18, 2010 12:22 pm

Garret / A-House / Al – You should have heard our fearless WAC commissioner on the Bobby Curran show this morning. It appeared that he had no proactive thoughts in place (like C-USA you posted above). His line of thinking wavered between…”hopefully nothing really happens”, but if it does, “then we add teams like Idaho and San Jose before”. Well to the relief of everyone, he mentioned that Southern Utah is not a potential candidate, but we’ll be all over Cal Poly, UC Davis, Sacramento State and Montana. Wonderful. What about the California fiscal crisis and its impact on the necessary transition for these FCS programs? “Well, the investment to upgrade to FBS can come from both institutional and private investment.” Wonderful.

He was quite well versed on what it takes for an FCS school to move up to FBS status (as that seems to be the focus of his “worst case scenario” efforts). Even Bobby couldn’t hide his disgust for this line of thinking and I thought he always supported Benson before.

We need to be proactive on this and this is way above JD’s level. I’m hoping/praying that Chancellor Hinshaw and President Greenwood are figuring out how to get off the leaking boat. Karl seems to already have his lifeboat in place, or he’s oblivious to all signs of a sinking ship (c’mon…he has to be smarter than that, no??). Top 10 local recruits…think they’d be excited about playing against Montana/Sac State/UC Davis/Cal Poly/Utah State/Idaho/NMSU/San Jose State? Should I go to Oregon State/PAC 10 or Hawaii/WAC…hmmm. Conference affiliation and opponents undoubtedly do make a big difference for many recruits. We have a hard enough time with this WAC membership…a watered down version (again)…uuhhgg. I’d like to think that our program deserves better than this, rather than accepting this as our future. All this just 2nds Al’s same thoughts from yesterday. We’ve grown this thing so much from the Termite Palace days…gotta do whatever it takes to keep it going.

🙁 The replay starts where the original stream started… and not at the beginning of the interview…

  116. Pomai May 18, 2010 12:53 pm

Garret what is stopping the, WAC, MWC, MAC, C-USA, and Sun Belt. Conferences from trying to form their own type of BCS program?

  117. Garret May 18, 2010 12:57 pm

    A-House,

The reason for this is that the non-AQ conferences wanted $9 million of the payout guaranteed even if no non-AQ team made a BCS bowl. So, the payout to the non-AQ conferences is $18 million when a non-AQ team makes a BCS bowl and $9 million if no non-AQ team makes a BCS bowl. The non-AQ conferences wanted the $9 million guarantee and did *not* want to have $18 million paid only if a non-AQ team made a BCS bowl.

If a second non-AQ team makes a BCS bowl, they earn $4.5 million. If a second team from an AQ conference makes a BCS bowl, they earn $4.5 million.

For the 2008 Sugar Bowl, Georgia earned $4.5 million for the SEC. UH earned $9 million for the non-AQ conferences, the WAC got $6 million of that, and UH got $4.5 million of that. So, UH earned more for the WAC than Georgia earned for the SEC.

  118. Garret May 18, 2010 1:03 pm

Garret #106 Huh?? nah, just kidding. still a little confused about last year’s non-AQ teams playing each other. Then the payday for that game only would still be split, though not equally, among all non AQ conferences? Did we (a non-AQ non playing BCS team) get more, same, or less than if they had Boise and TCU ( ? i forget already) playing some other AQ teams rather than themselves?

    papajoe2,

BSU earned $4.5 million from the Fiesta Bowl. They kept $3 million (most of that paid for their expenses) and the $1.5 million was shared among the WAC schools. *None* of the other non-AQ conferences got anything from that $4.5 million.

TCU earned $9 million from the Fiesta Bowl. The MWC kept $6 million and the other 4 non-AQ conferences split the other $3 million.

It is better for a non-AQ conference to have *their* teams in a BCS game since the conference gets more than if another non-AQ conference gets a team in the BCS game. However, all non-AQ teams get some money from the BCS, a share of the guaranteed $9 million and a share of the $9 million from the first non-AQ team.

  119. Garret May 18, 2010 1:14 pm

Garret what is stopping the, WAC, MWC, MAC, C-USA, and Sun Belt. Conferences from trying to form their own type of BCS program?

    Pomai,

NOTHING is stopping them. However, why would the general public care? The bowls get money from attendance and from TV. The TV money from a bowl game for the non-AQ conferences would be *tiny* compared to the BCS bowls because the non-AQ conferences have far, far fewer TV viewers watching their games. The public wants to watch teams like Florida, Texas, and USC…non-AQ matchups would get a fraction of the TV ratings and a fraction of the money.

Think about the bowl attendance figures also. UH fans were rightfully praised for sending 10,000 or 20,000 fans to the Sugar Bowl…but Texas had demands for more than 100,000 tickets from their last 2 BCS bowls and they forced people to donate big money in order to get the right to buy the tickets.

Look at the Hawaii Bowl. It pays the minimum for a bowl game ($750k) and the WAC and C-USA lose money by sending their teams there. Given bonuses to coaches and the expenses for hotels, per diem, and gifts to the players, the WAC loses money even when UH plays in the Hawaii Bowl.

If you look at the difference in BCS bowl money, the non-AQ conferences get a significant portion of the money. The portion that non-AQ conferences get is much, much closer for bowl games than it is for the regular season! UH gets $325k from the WAC’s TV deal and each Big 10 team gets $22 million. That has nothing to do with the BCS, it is just the value that the TV networks get which is due to TV ratings. Don’t blame the BCS, blame the general public. There are a LOT more people in Big 10 states than there are in Hawaii…do you blame them for caring about their in-state teams more than UH?

  120. Garret May 18, 2010 1:17 pm

If you add up the TV deals of the 5 non-AQ conferences, it comes out to a *tiny* fraction of the TV money that the SEC or Big 10 get. However, the non-AQ conferences got more money from the BCS than many of the AQ conferences last year. It can easily be argued that the non-AQ conferences got *more* than they actually earned from the BCS…that is the benefit of all the complaining about the BCS by the non-AQ teams.

  121. Garret May 18, 2010 1:19 pm

For #119, I should mention that the WAC doesn’t pay coaching bonuses–UH does and UH could actually lose money when they go to the Hawaii Bowl. Remember how HF didn’t have money for the coaches bonuses from the 2006 Hawaii Bowl so JJ had to pay the coaches with his foundation? So, JJ had to fundraise to pay the bonuses the coaches were supposed to get. I don’t think that Mack has a foundation that can cover that for UH, so UH would have to come up with that money.

dem BCS guys too smat….give some $ to da little pip squeaks and den we can control erryting da way we like…$’s going shut dem up…

The difference between have and have nots. They took the time and spent the monies to get to where they are so to them the spoils should go.
Any one wanting to get to “play” then make the commitment to bring the program up to snuff. Only thing is we are in a very small venue and can’t possibly expect to generate the kind of revenue like the big boys.
I don’t think we should be expecting to be like “them”. The other conferences can realign all they want but with the kind of power and influence the big conferences have built up we will be spinning our wheels. The only solution I can see is if the big conferences are split up and the so call power conferences aren’t allowed to continue “harvesting” schools out of other conferences. MWC was born because there was issues with programs wanting to go and get stronger and other issues. Funny that they would want to take schools that were originally left out of their initial plans now.
BCS…..Big Cr–k of S–T if you ask me.

  126. Pomai May 18, 2010 2:25 pm

I really think we all need a 16 team playoff to break up the bcs, the winner of each conference in and four at large. use the existing bowls that would be 13 bowl games. Then the rest of the bowls could still have their own games. But I doubt that I’ll see that in my life time. LOL

  127. vballfan1 May 18, 2010 2:29 pm

I wonder if someone that was there *hint hint* can tell us what Charlie said about recruiting, something about someone getting here in the summer???

  128. Kazz May 18, 2010 2:30 pm

Bobby Curran has been screaming this phrase for the past few weeks now and he is completely right when he says “collegiality” (is that a word?) is DEAD in the NCAA, most notably college football and then basketball to an extent, but mostly college football.

It wasn’t too long ago the college game provided more of a sense of “purity” away from the professional game filled with stories of contract disputes/rookie holdouts and cash incentives. The further along it progresses, college football will be a shell of it’s former noble self in that it is about the spirit of competition.

In all honesty, we see this every where. Money and greed has ruined it all. Women’s volleyball is headed in that direction and before we know it, even the real non-revenue sports will be there too.

Who would of thought that fascism and bureaucracy would take hold of athletic competition.

I think we, as a society, are to blame. I said it before. We, as a society, have placed a very high price tag on pro sports, and now college sports, that it cannot go back and the terms like “sportsmanship” are nothing but a cliché just ripe for marketing dollars.

  129. NorthShoreFan May 18, 2010 2:36 pm

Pomai..OMHO…at this point a good playoff system is not what will drive the conferences. Looks like the whole thing is about business. When we get business involved, it turns into a monopoly making effort. Get rid of the competition and you will end up with all the marbles. If you have all the marbles, you call the shots and can then “let” the others play. Just like on the play grounds right?
Until things get worse and the smaller players, who may make up the majority of “players”, start to whine, we won’t see any end to this “realignment” bs. The ones who carry the “big stick” won’t get involved. Al made a comment that it might be too late. I don’t believe so. They just sitting back and waiting to see if they need to swing that stick and make people behave.

Again I have stayed away from even joining in on the conversation of “what if” should the Big Ten expand and the domino effect starts.

Worst case scenario, besides the effect on our football D1 status or conference competition, I want people to take away the excitement that Wahine volleyball has brought us over the decades, take away the pride of being there for Dave Shoji’s 1000th win, the pride of an NCAA Men’s Volleyball National Title, the pride of a blue-collar program like the Rainbow Wahine softball team destroying NCAA records and upsetting bigger teams, etc…

Take all that away. Just imagine.

At this time our Wahine softball team is enroute to Palo Alto to continue their journey in the NCAA regionals and hopefully beyond and I find it eerie that all these discussions of what the worst case scenario for UH athletics is implying. Death to our non-revenue sports if the worst case scenario brings us to DII? Really it is implying DEATH to the student athletes and their supporters.

Personally I have made it a choice to follow and support UH athletics the way I do. It is a choice I gladly make. It’s a part of my life and the lives of others. So yes I and many others should take it personally.

When all these conference shifts are taking place based on “business decisions”, the personal effects on the lives of thousands and possibly millions of collegiate athletes and their supporters hang in the balance. Do the “bigs” care? No and why should they? It’s just business and nothing personal right?

It’s fascism and greed at it’s finest.

I’m not so naïve to say we should continue the approach we currently have. We must win and our conference needs to be proactive. Listening to Karl Benson on 1420 this morning reminded me of a lit match in charge of dynamite. No more playing the victim. If they wanna play dirty, let’s get _____ DIRTY!!!

  133. NorthShoreFan May 18, 2010 2:47 pm

Kazz…you hit it on the head…that’s why I luv high school and college athlethics….but now with all this politics getting into it, it will eventually take away from the intent of athletics. You see it more and more. Look at recruiting pitches and the venues they play sports in.
Should have a course and degree work in athletics. Then the athlethes who have no interest in academics can just go and take those courses like football 101 or something like that. But the true student athlete can pursue the degree. The pros can start their own “farm” system on their own dime instead of the colleges providing the training ground.

  134. Paka May 18, 2010 2:48 pm

I think the way UH is handling the whole H-logo situation with Hightower HS is just plain ridiculous. We should feel flattered that high schools like our logo enough to use it. I sure am. I remember when we first used the logo at Hawaii, we took a lot of heat for it. UH isn’t the only team that high schools “borrow” logos from. USC’s, Florida’s, Florida St., Michigan, even our galloping Mustang at SMU is used by many teams throughout the country. UH is the only school making a big deal out of it. If they are selling University of Hawaii merchandise without permission, that’s one thing. But using the logo for the HS? Come on.

  135. Kazz May 18, 2010 2:49 pm

    Homey,

  137. NorthShoreFan May 18, 2010 2:56 pm

Paka…is the Hawaii “H” kapa design unique? The letter “H” is the letter “H”…but I guess the Hawaii’s “H” kapa designed is quite unique. That is the issue. I understand that we should feel honored that other schools like the design and are using it but this design was “registered” and copyright infringements is the problem.

    Garret . . .

Good to hear you folks are fine.

Gosh, the breaking news up here made it sound pretty bad in some of the areas.

  143. NorthShoreFan May 18, 2010 3:19 pm

Hey the ground activity is getting more frequent huh? or is this normal?…

  144. Garret May 18, 2010 3:24 pm

Monopoly? Fascism? Do you know that the *majority* of D-IA teams are in AQ conferences? Expansion could mean that up to 75% of D-IA teams would be in AQ conferences. Does that sounds like just a few schools are keeping all the money?

The BCS set rules that allow conferences to move up and become AQ conferences if they win. The MWC is close to doing that. Is it the BCS’s fault that SDSU increased the Athletic Fee twice recently to upgrade athletics and went from $1 million from the students to $10 million from their students for Athletics? All this happened in the past 5 years or so…UH has been talking about a student fee all that time.

Is it the BCS’s fault that the public wants to watch Florida, Texas, USC, or even Utah and TCU far more than they want to watch any WAC team without the initials BSU? How did BSU get so popular with ESPN and the viewing public even though their state population is comparable to Hawaii? They won on the field.

It seems that people want publicly funded Universities to turn down money that they have earned and donate it to school that did not proactively build their programs. That really does sound like Communism without any incentive to improve. That model is far closer to Communism than the current system could be considered fascism.

I agree with Kazz that it is horrible that softball and other nonrevenue sports are dependent on football and men’s basketball to survive. The problem with that is that all those other sports LOSE MONEY. Softball loses a LOT of money for UH. The public does NOT care enough to have the TV rights be worth any money and they cannot charge anything for fans to go to the games. So, those sports have to be subsidized since if we were just looking at money those sports (including the excellent tennis team, swimming, etc.) would be cut. So, you want other schools to give poorly run Athletic Departments (under HF there was NO other description) money that they need to be able to afford to subsidize *their* nonrevenue sports? They would end up having to cut sports…that would mean the immediate end to men’s volleyball as an NCAA sport for one thing.

  145. Idono May 18, 2010 3:26 pm

Regarding the H logo, UH should promote schools to use it at a nominal price, which is to be paid to a charitable organization here in Hawaii.

UH and and the state of Hawaii should also promote themselves to the schools, nothing to do with recruiting. Just by sending things from Hawaii that the school and children can use which may bring new found enjoyment and appreciation for our state and UH. Out of sight out of mind will now be in sight in mind. More publicity for the state as well as UH.

More to gain than the few dollars UH will try to collect for themselves. Having them donate the few dollars to a charity here in Hawaii brings more positive thing to all parties concerned.

As the saying goes “Givers Gain & Takers Lose”.

  146. Pomai May 18, 2010 3:34 pm

wanfan that wasn’t a earthquake, dat was da Na Wahine having batting practice over in new mexico, Kelly was just hitting a few out of the park towards San Diego area.

  147. wafan May 18, 2010 3:43 pm

Not sure of ALL the specifics of the “H” logo being used by various schools. But, if the UH behaves as some folks in Hawai’i usually do, there will be a knee-jerk reaction. This will result in overkill. Next, there will be some backpedaling because of some unintended results (looking bad, in poor taste, . . .). And finally, someone will be made the scapegoat.

Best case would be for the UH to contact other universities to learn how they work with high schools who use their logos.

You would hope UH learned their lesson after the Sugar Bowl fiasco.

  148. wafan May 18, 2010 3:45 pm

    Pomai . . .

    That would be awesome!

  149. Pomai May 18, 2010 3:46 pm

In this case(H logo) UH needs to bless the use of it by the high school, an not worry about any sales of shirts or whatever, dang so they sell a few thousand dollars worth of stuff, that makes UH’s share a couple of bucks, cost more to do the accounting work than they would get. Not saying just give everyone freerain but in this case go for it, and any other highschool out there.

  150. Pomai May 18, 2010 3:47 pm

Maybe UH should adopt the dang high school.

  151. NorthShoreFan May 18, 2010 3:53 pm

I think we can all agree that the University of Hawaii’s “H” logo is unique. yes? There was a photo of the very same “H” logo on a mainland high school jacket. I have no problem with this but I think the design has been “copyrighted” or “registered” and the designer might have some porblems with that. i don’t know how the people at Honda would react if the “H” logo they have designed was used by someone “not authorized”.
Ferd’s column has a good discussion on this issue.

  152. homey May 18, 2010 3:53 pm

Gotta draw the line somewhere because any Tom, Dick, or Harry can come to Hawaii and say they are selling H-logo items on behalf of the high school and make off with the profits.

    …sleep time. Leave me alone.

  153. Bulla May 18, 2010 3:56 pm

  156. NorthShoreFan May 18, 2010 4:09 pm

Garret you right most viewer’s would like to watch a game batween high profile programs, USC, TEXAS, OKLAHOMA, MICHIGAN..etc. It’s when they all get together to capture the market and make it exclusive and force other schools to down grade programs and the quality of the conferences. Then what they do impact other programs. BC had some discussion this morning. Like you said, “Just win” but we all know this won’t be possible for everyone. Even if it was possible, the networks will still be positioned with certain conferences only. There was more excitement for me when one power conference team met another power conference team instead of within the same conference. One man’s opinion.

  157. Slugger May 18, 2010 4:22 pm

    al,

    See you tomorrow at lunch!

    Aigoo- 5-1 Stanford…

  159. Ralph May 18, 2010 4:44 pm

Aigoo is being polite. We are close to losing again. Game almost over, and let’s not sugar coat it as being only a non-conference game, it’s against Stanford.

  160. Ralph May 18, 2010 4:47 pm

    game over, 5-1 Stanford.

  161. d1島 May 18, 2010 4:49 pm

No chance for at-large invite; Stanford is a throwaway game

  162. Ralph May 18, 2010 4:54 pm

When a team is barely over .500, there are no throw away games, we got to win to develop a winning mind set and program. We need the wins for respect for the program, we need it for the University, the bows fans, and to make UH attractive as a conference member that can put out competitive teams in all sports.

  163. d1島 May 18, 2010 5:09 pm

Slaats pitched 2 solid. left winning 1-0; Capaul pitched 2 OK; they got to Kuroda; Moore gave up a little more than he should have and plunked a guy; Linsky came in and finished all 4 batters he faced.

They pushed up lead-off guys playing small ball.

Go to SJSU; win the series; build momentum into the tourney and we’ll see what happens.

  164. d1島 May 18, 2010 5:10 pm

    Ralph,

    rah rah! 😆

  165. wafan May 18, 2010 5:12 pm

Thank you, Mr. Tsai, for some of the the highlights of today’s show.

  166. Paka May 18, 2010 5:15 pm

I think with respects to being unique. Of course it is. But so is USC’s TrojanHead logo, Texas’ Longhorn logo, FSU’s Spear, Michigan’s Winged Helmet…etc… all are unique logos which HS’ normally “borrow” because the kids want to have uniforms that they can admire. I know MLB logos have some kind of clause, but this is the first time I’ve heard of a copyright issue from a college. There are a number of teams here that use an exact copy of SMU’s Mustang logo, but I doubt that the HS pays for the use it.

  167. Ralph May 18, 2010 5:15 pm

UH needs to win one game at SJST to finish ahead of last place SAC St. Lose the series they then finish in back of SJST and become the last qualifying team, split the series they finish half a game ahead of SJST.

  168. wafan May 18, 2010 5:16 pm

    Yes, Ralph.

    Nytal!

  169. Paka May 18, 2010 5:17 pm

I just really hate when lawyers get involved with athletics.

  170. Ralph May 18, 2010 5:20 pm

D1 you got to be visionary, see the future; yeah I know, the immediate goal is to qualify for the WAC but got to look at the total package. It’s tough to recruit players to a losing or struggling program, we wonder why our best HS players want to go away-baseball, football, mvb, winning keeps things in perspective and makes HS players want to play for UH.

  171. vballfan1 May 18, 2010 5:27 pm

Anyone know what Charlie Wade said the first 5- 10 minutes of the show? It won’t play for me. Wondering what he said about recruiting.

  172. d1島 May 18, 2010 5:37 pm

    Ralph,

Even a visionary is not gonna burn his #1 pitcher for a Tuesday game before a make-or break series that weekend!

  173. d1島 May 18, 2010 5:39 pm

….go into the SJSU series as loaded as you can, come out smokin’ and tear thru the Tourney!

THAT will catch the attention of the HS prospects….

  174. Kazz May 18, 2010 6:25 pm

The successful non-revenue sports teams like the softball, water polo, sailing, cheerleading and tennis programs have done their fair share of the winning and providing a sense of pride for UH athletics in their respective sports.

The time for UH football and UH men’s basketball to really start picking it up has never been more critical than ever.

I don’t care what anyone says, Title IX compliance has produced some proud moments for UH athletics and national recognition for UH in those respective sports directly effected by Title IX. Again, speaking on a personal level, without Title IX and the given state of the economy, I wouldn’t put it past UH to have cut numerous programs by now and along with that we can forget all about what softball has done for UH this past season and the potential it brings for the next few seasons at the least.

For these athletes and their supporters, both emotionally and financially, it is not their fault that the college athletic system is what it is.

  175. Kazz May 18, 2010 6:46 pm

Something about this situation seems oddly familiar…

(from the softball team’s diary on hawaiiathletics.com)

    Monday, May 17, 2010
Today was a sort of mellow day for the team. Other than a full, morning practice, there wasn’t much else planned for today. The team practiced hard, working on defense, hitting (both in the cages and live off Coach Bob), and baserunning. After practice, some of the players went swimming in the hotel’s pool, or went to the movies, or just relaxed as they enjoyed some down time.

Tomorrow, we head to the Bay Area…not quite the Palo Alto area yet…but close. Apparently, there are two HUGE conferences in the Palo Alto/Santa Clara/San Jose area until tomorrow, and there are NO hotel rooms available in a 32-mile radius…no really, a 32-mile radius of the area. So, the team will be staying in Newark tomorrow night before moving into the Palo Alto area on Wednesday afternoon. Tomorrow is just a travel day for the team, but on Wednesday, the ‘Bows will hit the practice field again at San Jose State (thank you to Coach Peter Turner).

Ok fine, there are conferences in the area, but as some already pointed out, if you are the host team, aren’t you responsible for reasonable accomodations? Of course, I have no idea how long ago it was Stanford placed a bid, but still.

I have tried to search to find the whereabouts of the Texas Tech team and their accomodations, but nothing online.

The last time the softball team felt “unwelcomed” was in 2007 when UCLA pretty much set them up as an expected early elimination… 😆 … Yeah, we all know who ended up losing that regional!!! 😎

  176. Kazz May 18, 2010 6:48 pm

MAHALO TO SAN JOSE STATE AND NEW MEXICO STATE FOR BEING HOSPITABLE TO OUR RAINBOW WAHINE!!!

Nice to see some class still left in college sports.

  177. jm2375 May 18, 2010 6:49 pm

  178. A-House May 18, 2010 6:58 pm

    Anyone:

the TV package UH signed with K5 included softball games and lots of it.

did the softball program benefit from this? Is it up to JimD how the $$$ are doled out?

  179. SteveM May 18, 2010 7:02 pm

We’ve mentioned the blog “lifeboat” recently. Good metaphor, and if we stick to it, don’t picture an open lifeboat off the Titanic. Visualize a smallish cruise ship as a Tsai-ko sized lifeboat–maybe less than 2 football fields long. This was the visual for the lifeboat the last time we boarded for real in 2008–the week before the UH-Florida game.

LizKauai is the blogship captain. I was the Cruise Director (acting). The cruise director is responsible for planning and implementing the entertainment and activities of the passengers while interfacing with the Hotel and ship operations. I think PowderPuff could be the Cruise Director when she gets her sea legs, although we know that the only one who can truly handle the Tsai-kos is Mrs. A-House 🙂

Following are some excerpts of my short-lived Cruise Director career from the the last lifeboat sailing.

As Garret says… PLEASE IGNORE THE NEXT FEW POSTS IF NOT INTERESTED

  180. A-House May 18, 2010 7:02 pm

    Kazz:

I would think that the “host” school would provide hotel accommodations for all the schools in their regional, but does Stanford realy care?

they are at home, no travel, same bed, same routine, etc. “What, me worry?”

So–up on deck 8– Bulla, DPK, Pride, and homey… if you guys are done, please take the small lifeboat out of the pool and hang it back on its davit. We gotta free up the pool for the bon voyage BBQ. The buffet is open for the indoor types 🙂

The Genji morning excursion on Saturday might be sold out, but check with Tour Director (Jesse) James for the latest.

This afternoon at 1500 we will have the whale look-alike competition in the pool followed by the ice cream eating contest. Errr…someone please remind Bulla that the ice milk machine does not fit in his cabin and that it should be returned to the poolside snack bar…

Good evening Tsai-kos…this is your Warriorboat Cruise Director! I have some bad news… the pool deck will be darker than usual tonight because some larger Tsai-kos used the light string cable between the aft stack and forward suntan deck as a ZIP LINE ride. Broke. Also, a large impromptu group started their own PUB CRAWL this afternoon and liquid spirits are constrained until we reach port tomorrow for the airplane people.

But DPK will be leading karaoke in the Buffet at 2000 while I’m in sickbay seeing the tsaikomotrist. WreckinEyez and da Band are scheduled for the concert in the theatre on deck 4 forward at 2130.

After this Tsai-ko sized 620 foot “lifeboat” cruise, DON’T EVER go on a cruise ship. A medium-large one is around 3 football fields long and has around 12 different themed bars (pupus galore) and 7-10 speciality restaurants that serve spirits. The buffet(s) and general dining has wine, etc. The cocktail persons are around at all theatre productions, night shows, casino, and roaming the pool and sun decks in the day. I carry around a coffee mug all day in self-defense… 🙂

To the Tsai-kos disembarking today for the Florida and mainland excursions– have a good trip and don’t forget to blog.

“copy rights” or “registered” rights are part of the US patent law.

if broken, then some one should pay the penalty.

to what extent the penalty is will depend on both parties involved.

I don’t know if the other logos paka referred to are nearly the same or duplicates of the original, but “exact” logos are protected if the party owning the logo filed for “rights” under the US patent law.

Idono has a unique approach to solving this situation.

Looks like RGM will have to beat out Turner (former USC player that they drafted fairly high in 2009) to make Miami’s roster.

With four spots all locked up already, the battle for the fifth spot will be hotly contested.

Turner was a disappointed in 2009, only being active for two games. He was an early stand out in OTAs and minicamps but then faded when things got real in training camp and the preseason. It was believed that the coaches were not happy with how the bigger turner was unable to get off the jam, even against smaller corners like Nate Jones. There were also rumors that Turner was slow in picking up the offense. One thing we know for sure is that Turner’s inability to contribute on special teams definitely hurt his chances of being active on gameday as well.

Turner’s biggest competition figures to come from Ryan Grice-Mullen. RGM was a teammate of Davone Bess at Hawaii and is said to similar on the field to Bess – with two differences. He doesn’t possess the hands that Bess has but he’s faster, having run a 4.36 40 yard dash at his Pro Day workout two years ago. That means that Grice-Mullen could be a factor in the return game – something the Dolphins seriously lack. If that’s the case, his ability to return kicks could be what wins him that final spot.

  201. Garret May 18, 2010 9:00 pm

    NorthShoreFan,

I respect your opinion. However, the *courts* ruled that every conference has to get its own TV deal. I cannot blame them when they build up their programs to the point that TV networks pay them crazy money. The ACC just got a contract from ESPN for $1.86 billion while UH gets about $325k from the WAC’s TV deal. And the ACC is not in the upper tier of AQ conferences.

All of the big-name teams did NOT get together to exclude everyone else. Teams like Baylor, Vanderbilt, Washington State, and Iowa State are not exactly big names. The conferences built themselves up and made their teams more attractive to their fans. Other conferences had a chance to do so also–the MWC teams used to be in the WAC and they could be an AQ conference soon.

UH Athletics was underfunded for decades. Upper campus and lower campus were horribly underfunded, especially when you consider that for many years Hawaii had a surplus. The buildings, labs, and athletic facilities were allowed to deteriorate instead of being maintained properly and new facilities for academics or athletics did NOT keep up with the rest of the country. How long does it take to get an Athletic Fee at UH? Other schools like Utah State have the students vote *for* much bigger Athletic Fees while other schools have the students vote against Athletic Fee increases and the University President increasing the fees anyway.

If UH was a power in football and basketball over the past 2 years, things would be different. If HF had not let the facilities go to heck, failed to even try to get an Athletic Fee, failed to capitalize on the football team’s success, and failed to accept JJ’s offer to reduce his salary if the money would be used to benefit the football program, then the MWC might be begging UH to join them. The facts are that the MWC needs more than 1 more team with high computer rankings to satisfy the AQ requirements. UH in 2006/2007 would do it for them. UH in 2008/2009 would prevent them from being an AQ conference.

JD is doing his best to fix things. It looks like UH will be getting an Athletic Fee. It looks like his selections last year were boosts for the men’s volleyball and women’s basketball programs. It looks like men’s basketball can be turned around soon. But all of this might just get UH to a balanced budget when they need big *upgrades* in budgets and facilities. And unfortunately, the time HF failed to do anything means that JD does not have enough time to fix things before the conferences will make their decisions.

  202. Garret May 18, 2010 9:03 pm

    koakane,

You asked for the best-case scenario I had–I posted this here last week.

My best scenario for UH would be for the MWC to lose Utah to the Pac-10 and BYU to the Big 12 and then having them expand to 12 to get a better TV deal and a conference title game. I’m not sure that the Big 12 would take TCU because they already *own* the Dallas-Fort Worth TV market and TCU doesn’t bring a new state to their TV deal.

So, the combined conference would look like this:
    UH
    BSU
    Nevada
    Fresno State
    TCU
    UNLV
    Air Force
    Colorado State
    Wyoming
    San Diego State
    New Mexico
1 other team (Houston? SMU?)…or, if TCU goes to some other conference then stay at 10 teams

That conference would get an *excellent* TV deal from ESPN since ESPN won’t be able to play the MWC off the WAC. ESPN would only have one option instead of 2, so the price would go up. With only one choice and a nice geographical coverage, the TV deal would probably be much more than what the MWC and the WAC gets now combined. That would probably be $2 million more per school than what UH gets now.

If the Big 10 expands to 16 and raids the Big East, then reports now state that the Big East will lose their BCS AQ conference status. They might even lose the rest of their football teams to a raid from the ACC or Big 12. That would make the new MWC the #6 rated conference…giving it BCS AQ status! Instead of complaining about the BCS, UH fans would not worry too much about the C-USA, MAC, and the Sun Belt conferences being left out.

That is my best-case scenario. UH would be back with UNLV, SDSU (I could probably house 6 Tsaikos who wish to see games against SDSU), etc., and would be in a BCS AQ conference. Recruiting would be *much* easier with AQ status and revenues would increase significantly with the improved TV deal, improved basketball revenue (some of those teams make a pretty good basketball conference), and the $2-3 million extra each year from the conference championship game and BCS bowl share. The conference would also get $1-2 million extra each year from NCAA tournament money.

If the student fee lets UH’s Athletic Department get back to breaking even, the extra $2-3 million each year from the conference championship/BCS bowl share (plus another $2 million each year from TV and the increased basketball money) would take UH to the next level. Plus, UH would have better attendance with more attractive teams to show off. If the conference forced UH to provide a travel subsidy, UH could afford to offer $2 million per year as a buy-in to the conference and would end up $5 million or so *ahead* when you take increased attendance into account.

Anyway, you asked what the best case scenario would be to me. Better teams to play, BCS AQ status, and $5 million extra per year would take UH to the next level.

I still think the best way for UH to get to the next level is for Garret to make his super-fortune and donate a billion to the athletic department 🙂

  214. Free PSP ISO Downloads May 19, 2010 8:46 am

I don’t think it really has anything to do with the memory sticks or the reader itself because when the USB is plugged in the sticks, reader and unit seems to work just as it should but when it is unplugged the issue is again apparent.

Assuming the Big 12 South bolts (which is going to happen with Nebraska’s anouncement) I would like to see the remaining North teams make a bid to join the Mountain West. It could be pretty sweet. Mt West Conf – West division – Boise St, BYU, Utah, Air Force, Wyoming, UNLV, San Diego St, New Mexico. East Division – Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Mizzou (If they don’t bail to Big 10 given the chance), Baylor, TCU, Colorado St, Houston, UTEP, or somebody like that.

I took a pretty lazy way out and got a program called TubeDownloader that lets you rip youtube videos by keyword and downloads up to 50 videos. This has a lot of uses and is powerful little software. Use keywords like “Seinfeld EPISODE” and some nice clips you can rip should be grabbed. Here is a link:

Nebraska can’t stand the heat (Texas) so they are getting out of the ktichen. Too bad Ohio State, Michigan, and Iowa will also beat them. I wonder where the Cornhuskers will go next in search of the elusive championship season.
