Kia signs with the J-E-T-S

Aaron Kia said he signed a one-year contract with the New York Jets today.

Kia participated in a tryout this morning. After that, Kia and two other linemen took physical examinations. After that, he was summoned into an office, where he was told he would be offered a contract.

Kia projects to compete at left tackle, the position he played last season.

OK, OK. We’ve heard about Boise State’s wandering eye. If I were running the WAC,  I would be poker-faced about it for, oh, eight minutes, then start to fret. This isn’t nine years ago, when some thought Boise was in Iowa. Now Boise State is Beyonce, and divas do not need background singers. So, here’s the plan:

• New rule on divvying up the money if a WAC team goes to a BCS game. This time, the participating team keeps all but $100,000. The WAC will get $20,000, the other eight WAC teams each receive $10,000. That’s a better deal than what the Mountain West will offer.

• Pay-for-play. Give most of the television money to the team — or teams — that appear in an ESPN-affiliated game. That’s the way it works in the real world. If Sandra Bullock is in a movie, she gets the big bucks; she doesn’t share it with every member of SAG. So, say you’re a team that doesn’t appear on TV a lot? Two answers: Get better or get controversial. Both are appealing to television viewers.

• Let Boise paint every surface blue — arena court, tennis court, softball field (blue dirt?), AD’s carpet.

While the softball Rainbows earned the crown, New Mexico State deserved a congeniality award.

Not only did NMSU host the past weekend’s WAC Tournament, it showed good sportsmanship in allowing the Rainbows to use the NMSU facilities while preparing for the NCAA Regionals.

Congrats to former UH quarterback Kiran Kepo‘o, who also apparently graduated Saturday.

Happy birthday to one of our geniuses, Jason. He’s proof that smart is the new cool.

Congratulations to all of the graduates from UH.

  10. Garret May 17, 2010 9:50 am

From the Advertiser, UH gets this amount from UA:

The Warriors’ success helped earn an eight-year contract with Under Armour Inc. in 2008 as its exclusive provider of football uniforms, shoes, coaches shirts and other items. From that deal, UH is guaranteed $135,000 this year in rights fees plus product allowances, marketing support and other extras collectively valued at upwards of $465,000, according to the contract.

    http://sports.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100516/SPORTS0201/5160380&template=UHsports

So, the difference in apparel contracts actually has a bigger difference between the big-name schools and UH than the difference in BCS bowl money.

Alabama on Friday placed the contract’s value at nearly $30 million in cash and product over eight years.

Published reports place Michigan as the nation’s largest apparel contract, valued at $66.5 million over eight years with Adidas, and North Carolina is believed to be Nike’s top school at $33.7 million over 10 years. Auburn signed a five-year contract with Under Armour in 2005 that is valued at $10.6 million.

The Pac-10 has been spending a lot of money to upgrade its football facilities.

Pac-10 has begun upgrading facilities using TV revenue

Last week, Washington announced it is going forward with a $250 million renovation of Husky Stadium. Cal announced its $350 million plan to redo its football stadium will require playing the 2011 season at AT&T Park in San Francisco. And UCLA last week broke ground on a dramatic $180 million makeover of Pauley Pavilion.

Meanwhile, the Wildcats are progressing with design plans for their $85 million North End project at Arizona Stadium.

  12. Garret May 17, 2010 9:54 am

The ACC’s TV contract was going to be up next year, so they just completed a bidding war for their TV rights. ESPN outbid Fox and gave them much more than earlier projections had expected. So, now the ACC is fairly close to the SEC in TV revenue. The Big 12 and Pac-10 have their TV contracts end in 2012, so their negotiations will take place next year.

The haves are getting more and more money…how much money will ESPN have left over for the smaller conferences?

The back-and-forth bidding, which reached its final stages last week at the league’s spring meetings in Amelia Island, Fla., drove up ESPN’s rights fee from initial projections of about $120 million a year to $155 million, sources said, providing the ACC with more than double the revenue it was receiving from its previous football and basketball contracts.

ESPN’s increase was in response to an unexpectedly strong pursuit by Fox Sports and sources familiar with the negotiations say the bidding was neck-and-neck last week.

The ACC broke from its spring meetings without announcing a new deal, and the conference said a formal contract had not been finalized. But industry sources pegged a pending deal with ESPN at $1.86 billion over 12 years .

That annual figure of $155 million dwarfs the average of $67 million the league was getting from its previous media deals, which expire at the end of the 2010-11 season, but falls well short of the $205 million a year that the SEC gets from its new 15-year deals with CBS and ESPN.

  13. lakesidegt May 17, 2010 9:54 am

    Jason
    Happy Birthday!!

How’s school? I know you’re teaching (Moanalua graduation this week!) and also taking more classes.

By the way, younger son is back at home after dorming for the first year at Manoa. He’s going to Japan with me in July.

  14. Garret May 17, 2010 9:57 am

More competition will just drive up the cost of TV rights…the Pac-10 and Big 12 must be really looking forward to this. I’m surprised that the ACC is getting more than 3/4 of the money that the SEC got…if the economy improves, the next round of contracts (Pac-10 and Big 12) could realistically match the SEC’s contract. With the TV deals lasting for more than a decade, there isn’t going to be another round of TV negotiations for a long time after next year.

That Fox made such a competitive bid could be considered a heartening development for the Pac-10 and Big 12 conferences, which are next in line to negotiate new media contracts. Both have rights expiring in 2012.

Turner Sports, which recently acquired with CBS the NCAA’s rights to broadcast the men’s basketball tournament through 2024, could be a factor in future rights negotiations as it seeks regular-season college programming to go with its NCAA package.

Those networks might provide some much-needed competition in the college space for these conference deals, which have been dominated by ESPN.

  15. Garret May 17, 2010 10:00 am

The Miami Dolphins have had a significant number of Warriors on their team recently–I didn’t realize that the scout for them who is responsible for evaluating UH’s players is based on Boise.

The man who keeps turning up these great players from Utah, Montana, Weber State, Hawaii, etc. is Dolphins regional scout Adam Engroff. Based in Boise, Idaho, he’s in his 12th season with the team and covers the West for the Dolphins.

  16. (Jesse)James May 17, 2010 10:02 am

    Woo Hoo…top twenty…

    Again, Happy Birthday Jason!!!!

  17. Garret May 17, 2010 10:02 am

Their GM trusts that scout so much that the GM doesn’t bother seeing MWC and WAC games in person.

When I asked Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland about the decision to draft a Utah defensive player in the second round the past two years, he mentioned Engroff and his “good relationship” with the Utah coaching staff. “They just have the kind of guys that we’re looking for: high-character guys, high-motor guys,” Ireland said. “They’re well coached. It is one of those programs obviously in the last couple of years that we’ve felt very good about the guys being ready to become pros.” It’s interesting to note Ireland, who sees a ton of college games live, didn’t see Misi play in person last season, so that should tell you the level of trust he places in Engroff.

  18. Garret May 17, 2010 10:03 am

Update on RGM. I like the praise for RGM as a returner…I don’t like that Miami doesn’t appear to have a roster spot for him. If he doesn’t make their roster, I guess RGM could go on their practice squad until they have a trade or injury.

Q: Mike, the Dolphins could use a punt returner and a nice established veteran wideout like Patrick Crayton. The Cowboys are looking to trade him after they got Dez Bryant. He is a Parcells find so for a 7th could we get him. Mike, Miami Beach.

A: Good name, but I think the Dolphins are set at receiver for now. They’re going to have a hard time finding a spot for the highly intriguing Ryan Grice-Mullen as it is, and RGM can return punts and kickoffs with anybody.

    Howzit!…
OTS…found this article..and not sure what this means..but..Last sentence of first paragraph made me …smile..

Newser) – Don’t get angry if little Johnny fibs: The ability to lie well and lie early indicates a fast-developing brain, according to some researchers, who suggest that kids who are convincing liars may grow into more successful adults. “Almost all children lie,” says Dr. Kang Lee, who headed the study. “Those who have better cognitive development lie better because they can cover up their tracks. They may make bankers later in life.”
Of course, Dr. Lee doesn’t seem to have actually tested how successful children are later in life—his research merely tracked how early they lie. The study gave various tests to children aged 2 to 16. They found that the two-year-olds only lied 20% of the time, but by age 4 that was up to 90%. By age 16, that fell to 70%, reports the Telegraph.

You do want UC Davis in the WAC. We need the Sacramento Market
They have a new expandable FB stadium and are going D1 in all sports

  40. EH NO MAKE ! May 17, 2010 12:49 pm

    Dennis Hollaran –

    Aloha!

    But are you KIDDING ME…?

The WAC wanting UC Davis and anything to do with Sacramento for whatever reason, wow, that’s like, I don’t know, maybe Americans ever liking adult soccer….

C’mon now, if it ever does happen, it will only be because there’s no other option, none, and warm bodies were needed.
The ULTIMATE solution, which will probably never happen, is re-uniting with the WAC defectors in the MWC in some sort of re-alignment.
    But hey, I doubt it.

But we “DO WANT UC DAVIS IN THE WAC” as you suggest, stop, stop, stop!!!!

  41. ai-eee-soos May 17, 2010 12:55 pm

    re: #28 bb:
    ” May 17th, 2010 at 10:55 am
I hope the UC Davis game is not foreshadowing of what could be a future WAC match up. ”

I’ve posted numerous times that UC Davis, Sac State & Portland State should get ready to move up to 1A, and that the WAC should be ready to invite them.

With Boise clamoring all along to join the MWC, and Fresno likely to follow, the WAC will need need new members in a heart beat. The WAC should also say Aloha to LaTech.

Having those 3 schools, plus any other school in the western U.S, ready to move up, will ensure that the WAC can maintain a 9-team football conference.

Let’s get real, the WAC is the only viable conference that Hawaii will be in; and Hawaii should “stay’ on the West Coast.

  42. al May 17, 2010 1:01 pm

    Al

I’m gonna have to agree with you 100%!

  44. Buffoman May 17, 2010 1:31 pm

#41 spoken like a true realist. I can live with UC David, Portland State and Sac State in the WAC. The reality is that the WAC is and will more firmly hold its place as a second tier conference. We may schedule a game or two with the “big boys” but at the end of the season, we won’t be invited to play with the “big boys” in their “big boy playground, the BCS Bowls” or get the “big boy allowances”(BCS payouts), but that’s all okay.

If the reality is that this is all we have to survive and keep above the D-II line, remaining a “bastard child” to the D-I A crowd, so be it.

It is what it is. Let’s not dream, let’s wake up and deal with reality.

Good call #41 (name too long to spell).

As far as conference re-alignment(s) especially where UH is involved, I think it boils down to travel expenses and tightening the purse strings.
That’s why the MWC formed and left UH out in the cold. Distance and lacking in viewership numbers.
So, it is what it is, and UH just gotta work with what they got. It ain’t so bad. To me anyway.
Winning will make it all better.

Sorry for spelling “Davis” not the guy who threw stones, David. So, maybe the cast offs from the MWC who were not picked to the big dance could make nice-nice to the WAC they ran from and join to be a “BIG Little” conference witha West 8 and East 8. HI, Port State, Sac State, UC Davis, SD State, SJS State, UNLV, Nevada.

Then Idaho, Mont State, Wyoming, NMSU, CSU, Texas State, AFA, UNM

  50. ai-eee-soos May 17, 2010 2:27 pm

    re: # 43 and # 46.

Yes, we are who we are; and we are located where we are.

Let’s make the best of this situation.

Let’s strive to win/contend for the WAC titles, every year.

Let everything else “fall into place”.

  51. ai-eee-soos May 17, 2010 2:32 pm

    re: # 50.

If the “castoffs” from the MWC want to join the WAC, make them “buy-in”.

In fact make them subsidize Hawaii’s travel cost when Hawaii travels eastbound; and they pay their own expenses to/from Hawaii.

    How’s that for a twist.

  64. al May 17, 2010 3:25 pm

    my take on conference expansions…

we will rue the day that bsu leaves.

we will lament further should la tech, fresno st, and nevada depart for the mwc.

the wac will be relegated to but a skelton of its old self and we will be the one left behind. picking up the likes of psu, ucd, and sac st will only make the wac thinner and closer to a d1aa conference in the eyes of all.

forget about the pac10 or any other super bcs conference it will not happen for us.

we can only hope that by some hook or crook we get invited by the mwc. to do that we need to offer travel subsidies, big travel subsidies. we need for private sector monies to come up big time to offer this or we will be the last man standing at the prom without someone to dance with. we need to sell the mwc with an east and west conference make up that includes us.

without a fairly decent conference to play in our recruiting will fall off the table. we would be lucky to compete for any mid major talents. it would be back to the old termite palace days of playing prairie view a&m or humboldt st.

the sponsors, boosters, ad, and the state should be concerned. really concerned.

it didn’t help that we went from 12-0 to 6-7 in a matter of a few years. had we kept winning, then our national appeal would have stayed up and we could have been a player to look at least.

it is what it is. but, we need to be proactive. perhaps jd and the downtown boys do have a plan stirring but we need to hurry.

the conference shakeups will leave many with their hands in their empty pockets.

if the door of the mwc is closed shut, maybe we can entice the conf usa to form a conference usa west and a conference usa east to at least salvage a few bucks.

no matter what it is we need to fatten the carrot to all who come to hawaii and play. we need to win to fill the stadium every saturday to make it work. the price that we will pay for all this realignment is big time bucks for this state as well as the university itself.

tough times are ahead for the football program.

    …nuff said

but, this is scary stuff for us.

i am surprised that the united states senate does not get involved with all this. wouldn’t the control of college football be considered under out anti trust laws? isn’t this a manipulative monopoly of sorts?

is the bcs’ power that large that our own govt turns their collective cheeks the other way?

heck this is larger than steroids.

Too little too late. But, a good change is always a good thing.

  79. Garret May 17, 2010 5:09 pm

ST, I like your suggestions, but obviously Karl Benson and the Presidents of the WAC schools do not.

New rule on divvying up the money if a WAC team goes to a BCS game. This time, the participating team keeps all but $100,000. The WAC will get $20,000, the other eight WAC teams each receive $10,000. That’s a better deal than what the Mountain West will offer.

The WAC’s *old* rule was that the team going to a BCS bowl got about $4.5 million of the $6 million or so the conference got from sending a team to the BCS bowl. UH got that money for the Sugar Bowl and spent $3 million or more in expenses (whatever was left over as profit). The WAC’s new rule is that the team going to a BCS bowl gets $3 million and the conference splits the $3 million with the other schools.

So, the WAC knew that BSU was unhappy and did the exact OPPOSITE of what you suggested. That was basically telling BSU to get out of the WAC, since after expenses they could make less from going to a BCS bowl than the rest of the WAC teams!

  80. Garret May 17, 2010 5:16 pm

Pay-for-play.

The conference does *not* do this, though they do give an “inconvenience fee” for teams that play on ESPN on a non-Saturday. So, UH is getting $75k for playing USC on a Thursday. The Pac-10 and other conferences do give money to teams that are shown on TV, which makes sense to me…but it appears that it does NOT make sense to Karl Benson and the WAC Presidents. We have *never* heard UH’s President or anyone else from UH complain about this policy, by the way.

The Big 12 schools are complaining that Texas gets more money than them from the conference. That is reportedly a reason why Nebraska and Missouri want out. Do you know what determines that Texas gets more money? Every Big 12 team gets paid for TV appearances, and ABC shows Texas more often than any other Big 12 team so they get more money. That makes sense because some of the TV money goes to who actually is shown on TV. The Big 12 also gives a bonus to every school that gets teams in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, with a bonus for each win. Each team in the tournament and each win actually brings a lot more money to the conference, so it seems reasonable that schools get an incentive to make money for the conference.

However, all you hear the media complaining about is that Texas is hogging the money. Is it their fault that TV wants to show their games and they win more NCAA tournament games over the 6-year period than any other conference school? Aren’t those good things? If the WAC adopted your rule, all we would hear is the Presidents of NMSU, Utah State, SJSU, etc., complaining that BSU/Fresno/Nevada were hogging the money.

Considering that ESPN only picked UH for 1 games this year and UH hasn’t make the men’s tournament in forever, UH would *lose* money if the WAC went by merit like you suggest.

    Tomorrow: Charlie Wade, noon.

    Next week: Greg McMackin.

  82. al May 17, 2010 5:26 pm

yup, that was a dumb ruling.
i wonder if benson pioneered that revenue sharing to give bsu a legit reason to leave?

    sounds preposterous but possible.

speaking of football…we should have a contest for when our first verbal commitment is tendered.

  85. Stephen Tsai May 17, 2010 5:29 pm

Every team has a chance to be like a Boise, which has a small stadium capacity compared to the really big schools. I mean, wouldn’t it have one of the smaller stadiums in the Mountain West?
What a team needs is a good young coach with an innovative system.

  86. Stephen Tsai May 17, 2010 5:31 pm

By the way, if I’m an AD, my head coach would be Bryan Harsin.

  87. al May 17, 2010 5:34 pm

actually it would behoove us if the mwc was raided.

say, pac10 gives in and takes byu and utah.
big12 follows after losing nebraska and mizzou by poaching bsu, tcu.

we offer travel subsidies substantial enough to entice our acceptance. say hawaiian air buys in with reduced charter flts and offers cheap package deals for boosters coupled with sheraton hotels offering a discounted hotel package.

  88. al May 17, 2010 5:36 pm

isn’t harsin next in line for the bsu job.

Wahine off/preseason training appeared to emphasize a lot of leg work. Working on strength, endurance, stamina, power, agility. Reminded me of a youth baseball/basketball coach that I had that yelled out everyday that “baseball is played with your legs”. Or “basketball is played with your legs”. We always thought that he belonged in the looney bin. Us bench warmers always laughed as we pretended to pitch the baseball with our feet. Then during the winter we sat on the bench and pretended to shoot the basketball with our feet. We never quite understood what he meant when he said “we play the game with our legs”. Helloooooo000hhhhh, it’s obvious if you have no legs you can’t walk dumbdumb.

We simply didn’t like this coach because we had no idea how running and running and running and running and then running some more, and then running some more after that, would make us better pitchers, hitters, and rebounders.

Well now that I’m older and wiser, I think that my youth coach may have been on to something.

I even now have to forgive my sensei in judo who I thought belonged in the same looney bin. You know the one who made us do duckwalks, forever, and ever, and ever, and ever, and then ever again. Doing duckwalks had notyhing to do with kung fu or karate like I saw kato do on the Green Hornet show. Not once did I see Kato do a duckwalk. All wanted to learn was how to karate chop everybody in the head in the third grade. Duckwalks??? Hate’um until today.

I wonder if the softball girls felt the same way about their training regimen.

I’m wondering what the new men’s basketball thought when he turned on the video of last season’s games. He’ll never tell us the truth. But I wonder if he thought to himself, “darn, this is scary. I better go out and get eight new players that can play right now”. Hmmmmm.

  105. Pride. May 17, 2010 8:06 pm

al good thoughts and keep them coming, but on previous posts, the PAC10 will not take both BYU and Utah as they are in the same TV market. They would rather take Utah because of the “they don’t play on Sundays” thing and maybe Colorado.

  109. chawan_cut May 17, 2010 8:32 pm

    Pride,
    Good story re:103!!!!

  110. Garret May 17, 2010 8:34 pm

    Al,

The Pac-10 will *not* take both BYU and Utah because they provide the same TV market.

The Big 12 will not take BSU because their TV market is too small.

The Big 12 will not take TCU because their TV market is owned by Texas already. That is also the problem for SMU, Houston, and the other Texas schools that would love to join the Big 12.

  111. OldDiver May 17, 2010 8:50 pm

    Regarding # 66

The Justice Department has not been enforcing the anti-trust laws since Reagan took office. The unregulated free market mentality took over which over the past thirty years has meant monopolies in the banking, health insurance, news media and so on. The big boys are paying big bucks to keep their monopolies intact stifling competition in most sectors. If Congress begins to investigate the BCS system you can be sure BCS monies will begin to flow into the pockets of our Representatives. So far the Obama administration has not shown any signs that they are willing to start enforcing antitrust laws to break up the monopolies which threaten competition in our economy. I have to think in any case the BCS system would be last on their list of priorities.

I posted on the pink side when Esme put out word for the mom’s to signup for the lifeboats — a concept she saw first here, as we took to the lifeboats twice in the past. I posted that if the Mom’s have each other’s contact info, the group will continue to exist in some form no matter what the future holds.

This brought back memories of the “Bus Stop” soliloquy I wrote years ago. The emotion still applies today, especially for the younger MLM group, but most Tsai-kos are secure in their ability to find each other now… a lot of cattle calls, tailgates, parties, and karaoke calls have passed under the blog bridge…along with emails, phone numbers, and real names 🙂

Besides the lifeboat, a blog or group meeting place can easily exist or be created. However, the issue is whether the blog host will continue leading it. Changes in employment situation is a big factor if they must decide. I am optimistic.

If curious, my “Bus Stop” soliloquy of 2007 is at:

  124. Not an Expert May 17, 2010 11:57 pm

The businesses, television and the sports media industry are using their power and connections to fund the colleges and conferences they want to back and succeed. It is an indirect way to get the dollars to flow to the schools and conferences of their choice in an appropriate way that does not break any rules.

I am sure if you look at the businesses, television network, etc. and the people who own them along with their top management, dictate how to have money go to the colleges and conference of their choice. Understandably profit needs to be involved.

The Playing field will become more uneven due to the way these schools and conferences are being funded. They will become to be known as “Too Big To Fail”. With the outlandish money being thrown around could this be the making of a “Bubble”?

Money, money and more money will be needed for UH to continue to compete at the highest level. Imagine if UH could have an athletic endowment fund worth 1 billion dollars and growing every year. At 3% interest that will be 30 million dollars a year. Where can they get that kind of money?

Our state, our city, our community does not have a major league sports team or a university with a major big time athletic venue, but we will have for a city of our size a major rail transportation system that will cost its taxpayers dearly.

  125. Kekoa May 18, 2010 12:32 am

Al ~ Thanks for the update. I’m in for 2 on Wednesday.

  126. Kekoa May 18, 2010 12:42 am

Not An Expert ~ I take it you are not in favor of having rail service. I guess we keep the status quo and continue on our merry little Guava Jam way. I can’t imagine people wanting to waste any more of their time in traffic every day. What are our options?

Money?…We have to be more agressive in bringing business people into the UH foundation. I think there is some deep pockets out there that just haven’t been offered the opportunity to contribute.

  127. Kekoa May 18, 2010 12:50 am

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
