Bulla writes about the love of his life, his wife. Bomb’s away!
It is with nervous fingers that I write about Lynette Eastman, the leading member from ‘Bulla’s Bombers’, a great Tsaiko, but most of all, my better half.
She was born in an Army hospital in Wurzburg, West Germany in 1961. Being an Army brat, she moved a lot during her early years starting in Bamberg, West Germany to Fort Sill, OK, to Schofield Barracks, HI, to Kuau (Maui), HI, to Fort Gordon, GA, to West Berlin, Germany, to Waipahu, HI, to Makakilo, Hi.
She graduated from Waipahu High School and is a card carrying Marauder. While at WHS, she was the Head Cheerleader and was involved in the Drama department as a performer and as a student director. To this day, she still feels like she’s a director, haha. At Leeward Community College she was a Drama and Dance major. She performed in Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors” directed by Dando Kluever. Ray Gin from San Francisco, directed the musical “Runaways” in August 1980 with Lynette being a lead in that production also. This past Christmas, she played the lead as ‘Miriam’ in our church production, ‘A Baby Changes Everything’.
Currently, she is the only ‘Area General Manager’ for AQUA Hotels & Resorts and is directly responsible for over 100 employees and their families. Lyn has been in the Hotel business in Hawaii for over 25 years. She spent 20 years in Maui until moving to ‘the big city’ of Waikiki in 2001. Her leadership is reflected by having one of her very own Housekeepers win the Hawaii Hotel Lodging Association’s ‘Lodging Employee of the Year’ for the state of Hawaii.
Lyn is very outgoing, very compassionate, and loves to have fun. Her along with her lifelong friends of hers are called the DIVAS, and yes, they are the DIVAS. Her laugh can be heard bouncing off of the walls at Genji’s, and I really believe that …..One day those boots are going to walk all over me…..haha
Her parents placed her in gymnastics, ballet, baton twirling and karate because she wasn’t ‘graceful’… it didn’t work, just kidding….she is very graceful and continues to amaze me as the years go by. She is a former Mixed Doubles Racquetball Champion, winning 12 of 15 tournaments in a two year span in Hawaii. She is the proud mother of her son Bryson, and the proud stepmother to Nik, Ryan, and Bella, and is recently Tootsie (grandma) to Arianna .
She loves football….no…I mean she looooooves football. We have traveled all over the mainland from taking Hawaii high school football players to San Antonio for the US ALL ARMY COMBINE, to UCLA Adidas Elite Invitational, Stanford NIKE Combine, All Poly Camps, New Mexico State Camps, University of Washington Camp, University of Utah Camp, Just Win Camp in Maui, Education First Game Plan Camp in Laie, and combines too numerous to mention. When Ryan was playing at Weber State we traveled across the US from Cheney WA, to Richmond Virginia.
Now that Ryan ‘The Beast’ is home, our traveling will be only for the Warriors now, and she is happy about that. She has such a generous and giving spirit; she has been a wonderful example of a loving and kind spirit for our children, and she always looks for the good in people. Now that she is involved in our prison ministry, even more can I see the love she has for people from all walks of life. Not many women have the fortitude to go to Halawa, OCCC and the Federal Detention Center to spread the Good News to those that are incarcerated.
Her husband, yours truly, has a mantra, ‘make memories, make memories, make memories….’ And I truly believe in that, because life is too short. I know that there are angels that come from heaven, because I was lucky enough to marry one.

Only people who have one of the Nielsen boxes count towards the ratings, so what you have your TV turned on to doesn’t matter in the ratings. Each home that has a Nielsen box counts for a little more than 100,000 homes, and each person who watches TV in that home has their TV viewing recorded. Then, the numbers are totaled to come up with the ratings.
It might seem crazy to use 1 person to project what 100,000+ people are watching, but pollsters do that all the time and as long as you have enough randomization in how you pick the houses things are supposed to be fine.
A-House, when they release numbers about how many people watched a game, that is all projections based on the Nielsen viewers. That is how all commercial dollars are computed, so TV networks pay very, very close attention to those numbers.

The CBs sure seemed to shrink (which is not surprising), but Rodney Bradley was very close to his listed height. If he can get healthy for this season, he could be another NFL prospect from UH.

Just reflecting on Garrett’s blogs yesturday bout these proposed tv hookups between the PAC10/BIG 12, etc. Here’s another move by these greedy BCS conferences trying to eliminate non-BCS inclussion of the, “financial-pie.”
I would strongly petition both congress and the NCAA to ensure that if these BCS schools follow their exclusionary plans that they pony-up the profits to include non-BCS schools compensation(s) because this looks and smells of monopoly in play.

My take on the student activity fee. I can sypathize with the students. It seems as though they are against it whereas most non-students are for it. I know how pissed off I used to be when I worked at UH and the union would just deduct money out of my pay for a service in which I neither agreed to have, nor felt that it could benefit me.
Dear Mr. Pride It’s not a question of “will we beat USC” it’s a question of how bad we will beat them. I will stand by my pre-season prediction of 12-1 with our only lost at Colorado.
Now for why we win over USC, 1. Because I can’t stand them. 2. We are hungry. 3. We are playing at home. 4. They have a new coach with a new system. 4. They won’t take us seriously 6. The twelfth man will show up.

I feel sorry for the students at UH an most other schools, because once they finish their education an get out in the real world where they have to pay full price for their ride, they will have what we call “Sticker shock”.
Oh, I see, the NFL has to measure the size of their XXXXX before they will even consider following them during their senior season.

The NCAA used to have *all* college football teams to be covered under one big TV contract and the court system ruled that was illegal. Each Conference was then FORCED to go after its own TV deal. So, what is the problem for 2 conferences to work together to maximize the money they could get from a TV deal? I have no idea what legal grounds anyone could think for this…this is an example of institutions (mostly public institutions that need all the money they can get right now) doing something creative to make more money for their schools.
Did you object to the Big 10 forming their own TV network? Notre Dame getting their own TV network to broadcast all of their games? The SEC getting $3.1 billion for their games? There is *nothing* wrong for the Pac-10 and Big 12 to work together for a TV network. In fact, the talks have been going on for months (I’ve been tracking this for at least 3 months and even posted stuff about that in this blog months ago), and most of the time the ACC was involved in a 3-conference deal…I don’t know if the ACC is out now or just overlooked in the latest articles.
The WAC and MWC could easily have formed their own TV network back when both had their TV contracts up. However, they did NOT want to work together, even though they would have earned more money (since ESPN needed at least one of them to sign a deal) and they would be shown on national TV more with the deal (including nonconference games between the conferences that ESPN would love to show).
The MWC did not want to work with the WAC because they want to dominate the mid-major level in the west and they think they are better than the WAC. The WAC did not want to work with the MWC since they wanted an exclusive deal with ESPN even though they basically have to give ESPN their TV rights for free at the same time ESPN was giving other conferences billions of dollars.
UH and the WAC would have gotten more money and been on ESPN more, but the WAC and the MWC decided to not work together. So, should we blame the Pac-10 for that?

Numbers don’t lie, the blessings overwhelm us, and bottom line in business is you get compensated for results…..bottom line. Her properties have been in the top if not at the top for occupancy in our company, and averages 1.5 over the industry occupancy reports. Luck, fate, coincidence…Noooo, It’s GOD.
Just as men know every inch of their TV remote, she knows every inch of her property and her financials…..but she is a leader that educates and empowers those around her through compassion and aloha.

I think Junior Day is good because the NFL doesn’t get sticker shock 11 months from now.
Laupepa Letuli posted the same numbers yesterday as he did at last month’s Pro Day. So unless players are bitten by radioactive spiders, NFL scouts have accurate readings on the Warriors.

The Justice Department is wondering why NCAA scholarships are only guaranteed for 1 year. They seem to be suggesting that schools should be able to engage in bidding wars for athletes…offering different numbers of guaranteed years during the recruiting process.

Some NCAA schools apparently list the exact heights and weights of their players…but most (like UH) tend to be “generous” with height numbers for some of their players. So, the NFL has to get the real numbers as part of their evaluation process.
I like this because it is based on facts. Otherwise, the NFL might assume that UH added 1-2 inches of height to every player and some players who are listed at their actual height would be penalized.
If the Big 10 TV Network gets 50% more subscribers by 2013, that means that they could generate $33 million or more per school!

Interesting that RB is the only position where shorter is better.
I think most Division I-A schools know the exact heights and weights. The difference is that those schools don’t allow reporters to stand two yards away recording numbers.
Then again, this is what makes June Jones and Greg McMackin unique. They allow access to their practices and players, and they’re always available to talk. And, face it, they’re the reason this blog is different from others.
I can’t think of very many Division I-A coaches who will take direct calls at 10:30 at night to answer questions about some of the most manini things.
I mean, some critics might not like the way UH practices, but if you’re a Florida fan, you’re not watching a Gator practice without a satellite camera.

Last night I was listening to a radio person interviewing Tiger Wood’s reaction to his first round of shooting a 70.
He goes on to acknowledge that he didn’t think he shot all that poorly, even though he trails the leader by four.
In succession he give these observations about his game. It’s the last one that’s innocent but given his recent troubles it’s kind of naughty.
“My games a little rusty.”
“I need for the putts to start going in.”
“It’ll take some time.”
“Once I get a few more tournaments under my belt I should be alright.”
Maybe I’m imagining things, but I think even Tiger took a pause after saying that before continuing on.
Did he mention that he has to get his game back into the groove? Not yet.
Okay, here’s a thought that could make the UH a “darling” of any conference.
Given that much of the blog talk to day is of the Pac 10, Big 10 and the revenue they generate through their television packages what about this.
UH works a deal with Rick Blangiardi’s group. They then package up UH athletics and go east, not west and sell the UH package much as the old K-5 UH package once had to folks in the east. We have KIKu and Korean programs here and I’m sure that have relationships with TV affiliates in the “homeland”. So why not open that market. This would mean that UH would have to take a leap of faith with their budget and actually go to those respective countries in pre- or post- season to play games against the respective countries collegiate teams. Harder for football but they can in volleyball (men and women), baseball (men and women-softball), swimming, diving and though some of these may be non-revenue generating in “USA” they may be big back east, thus television.
Use people like Konishiki in Japan as he is popular and has a television show to garner exposure, make UH the Notre Dame of the east and sew up that television market.
I’ll bet that if they are able to do it with a solid foundation, the Big 10 may come calling as that’s the untapped marketplace.
Oh, don’t stop there, take Australia and China while we’re at it.
Is this out of the box enough? Don’t look west to be saved, look east to be the new “darling”.

Saw him many times at the softball games all season long and while I was sitting down, I know he didn’t look 6’3″ and even at practice it was evident he wasn’t that tall, but I figured he’d come in at 6’1″. I guess my depth perception is off.

Buffoman, good idea, but along time ago UH had a JV football team that would play foreign teams. A different team from Japan maybe would play once a year. It was not competitive at all. Imagine a JV team (not good enough or experienced enough to make the varsity) using a lot of their substitutions to just really rip it to those Japan teams. I know that the foreign teams have improved, but consistantly having 210#s lineman or even lighter, just wouldn’t cut it, playing a Div. 1 team. Keep thinking outside the box though. The TV package sounds very good for the eastern countries. You never know what may transpire from that. It cold be almost endless, especially from recruits (in all sports), sponsors, even thinking of owning a Hawaii based team (baseball, soccer, water polo, basketball, golf, etc.).

I really don’t know how many people will be there as it is last minute and while the public is invited, I don’t think Coach Coolen really intended it to be a spectacle like football does, maybe in the future though?
But should be interesting. It will be played under “real game” conditions to get the ladies ready for the WAC tourney. Also, with the team splitting into two, should be nice to see the non starters getting into the action too.

Given these numbers and the percentage of Hawaii’s population as compared to the US population, I’d guess that about *100* houses in Hawaii have the Nielsen meters or diaries. What those people watch determines the ratings for ALL of the rest of Hawaii.
I’ve never been a Nielsen TV viewer, but I did do their radio ratings when I lived in Austin. You had to keep detailed records of everything you listened to for every day they were measuring, since precise records were important for their system.
By the way, people with Nielsen meters or diaries in their houses are under strict instructions not to identify themselves. If they openly talked about it they would be kicked out of the program and subject to other penalties. If a Tsaiko lived in a Nielsen home, I’d hope they would make sure to have their TVs turned to UH football games even if they were at the game in Aloha Stadium, have their TV turned to the replay even if they weren’t watching it, have a TV tuned to every UH sports event televised, AND avoid fast-forwarding through any commercials. Just *one* house doing that would give a huge boost to UH’s TV ratings. 10 houses doing that would make the TV networks take notice since it would actually change the TV ratings that UH gets. Talking about it would get them kicked out of the Nielsen program and UH would lose that boost…

There are more teams in BCS AQ conferences than outside of those conferences. If the AQ conferences expand and grab some MWC, C-USA, etc., teams they will have a significant majority of the D-IA schools. So, we aren’t talking about having the minority rule over the majority…the AQ conferences are the majority.
The courts made their ruling many decades before the BCS existed. They let capitalism and the free market determine who would grow their revenue and who would stagnate. Remember, the Pac-10 and Big 10 had the Rose Bowl forever before the BCS existed, the Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, and Sugar Bowl were tied to big conferences and the WAC never had a shot at them until the BCS existed. The big money bowls went to the conferences that could bring the big TV ratings and fill those huge stadiums. ALL of that happened before the courts ruled on the regular season TV deals.
The only solution to move up is to WIN. BSU has taken advantage of winning to get more money from BCS bowls in the last 4 years than Texas A&M or UCLA has gotten. BCS *bowl* money is NOT the problem…regular season TV money and NCAA men’s basketball tournament success are what separates the different conferences.
You know how you get more NCAA men’s basketball money? Win. They have a simple formula that rewards conferences with teams that win in the tournament. Sadly, we can probably count on one hand the number of wins that the WAC has had in the tournament in the last 5-10 years.
You know how you get more regular season TV money? Win. Win nonconference games and then the teams in your conference will be ranked and the TV ratings will go up. When Nevada gets blown out when playing 3 decent nonconference teams last year and then goes 7-0 to start the WAC, that looks bad for the WAC since their 2nd place team had those horrible losses when they played outside of the WAC.

I just emerged from my lurking den to congratulate “The Tsaikos” on being designated a “Special Interest Group!” In case this hasn’t been brought up already, it comes from a most reliable source: this week’s UH Athletics H-Mail Newsletter.
“Thank you to all of the fans who made donations at the UH-Fresno State softball series. Fans who attended last week’s Wahine softball games donated more than $2,400 during the three-game series. A collection box was stationed in the stadium and fans placed donations as the Wahine took two of three from rival Fresno State and in the process clinched the outright WAC title. All donations will be used to offset the program’s expenses. The collection box, manned by the special interest group “Tsaikos” was a result of UH Wahine Softball fans requesting a means by which to make on-the-spot donations to the team.”
So congratulations to this most SPECIAL of INTEREST GROUPS, and especially to those individuals who made this particular support project happen!

Doesn’t cost you a penny to do this.

jm911…yup. a softball is nothing. it has a lightly densed core of typically polyurethane, therefore, the ball’s reflex off the bat is limited in velocity.
now a baseball is a hardball comprised of a tiny rubber or high compression cork center tightly wound with yarn measuring nearly one mile long. bat exit speeds can top 100 mph.

I went purposely to meet you – I understand you read Plato and Aristotle in the original Greek.
Ice hockey puck. Dense, one solid piece of vulcanized rubber. Most people don’t know that the hockey pucks are actually frozen before a game and ice cold ones are kept near the scorekeeper’s area and every time there is a stoppage in play, the referee exchanges the puck on the ice for a newly frozen one.
This is done to prevent as much “bouncing” as possible or to help keep the puck from rolling on it’s side.
Hard as a rock frozen or not and more aerodynamic than a round ball.
Off a stick it can reach upwards of 80-90 mph with little effort from a player of decent high school skills. In the NHL, it can register at 100-120 mph.
Melloh of FSU really doing a yeoman’s job of pitching, ball speed ranging between 24 to 66. Her off speed in the 40’s. Both pitchers top 66 on the riser.
kden in my self defense I might as well do something I enjoy and will be good at. bg had the same opportunity but he passed when the sign up sheet came by. so from my understanding they (kekoa and bg) will be passing out prizes maybe an inventory should be taken before hand there also.
the women are throwing an assortment of pitches and speeds with the same motion. If our UH mbb team had any pitchers who can throw all of their pitches at different speed with the same motion like these women, UH would be at the top of the WAC.

FSU sb season tickets: lower box two types: $250 or $200. Upper reserved $150, general admission $76. Single game, $15 for lower box, $5 general admission. No wonder the FSU fans were surprised that admission was free last weekend. A few contributed to the Tsaiko donation request.

FSU averaged over 1700 fans when UH played there last season. FSU winning tradition, lots of WAC championships, one national title, and a number of final four appearances makes FSU sb attractive to their fans. We can do that if we win the WAC more often and get to the NCAA on a regular basis. Same goes for all UH sports. Only Na Wahine VB has been there and they have a good following and leads the nation in vb attendance.
La Tech infield defense left Krieg down, mental lapses opened the door for 2 runs. FSU 2-1 over La Tech.
Well, well gentlemen, but IIRC, I said, “I may be able to make it”. As it turned out, I went from 10am and finished at 2pm – all for my clients!!
Tsaikos are important, but they do not “trump” my clients – fact of life!

The votes are in, and the University of Hawai’i football team:
• Named center John Estes, defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea and outside linebacker R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane as team captains.
…From the standpoint of how leadership and guidance is important for the team during the summer, especially with the unsupervised workouts, lifting and conditioning, wouldn’t it seem wiser for the coach to have his team captains named earlier so the players have someone to look up to.
Wouldn’t the captains and the players grow during the summer months, develop a rapport and cohesion, and ripen during the season?
Every year I watch UH naming their captains on the eve of the season, almost as ceremonious and perfunctorily like, and I often wondered if they named their team captains sooner, like after spring ball, if it would have greater reward and pay greater dividends during the season. I think it would.
The same groups of players that played last year, trained during the winter months and practiced in the spring know by now who their leaders are. It doesn’t need further auditioning, like waiting to training camp in making a decision and tallying votes. It makes perfect sense in picking the team captains earlier. It all up to the coaches in opening their eyes.
