Moniz apologizes
During yesterday’s team meeting, quarterback Bryant Moniz apologized for actions that led to him being placed on “personal leave” for the final three weeks of the Warriors’ recently completed spring training.
Moniz is expected to rejoin the team for next month’s start of the summer conditioning program.
By the way, I appreciate that people think I know details about the situation — neighbors, relatives, former classmates — but, nope, I don’t. So, sorry.

The Jets yesterday waived linebacker Broderick Stewart and signed two undrafted free-agent linebackers — Cory Reamer of Alabama and Brashton Satele of Hawaii.
Reamer and Satele both received tryouts during the Jets’ rookie minicamp over the weekend. Reamer, who drew raves from coach Rex Ryan, had 50 tackles, two sacks and an interception last season while helping lead Alabama to the national title over Texas.
Satele missed last season for Hawaii due to a left shoulder injury. The NCAA rejected his request for a medical hardship that would have allowed him to return for a sixth season with the Warriors.
Stewart was signed as an undrafted free agent last week after having 4½ sacks for Vanderbilt last season.

While everybody was focusing on the Joe McKnight barfing and Santonio Holmes’ iPodGate, a couple of no-names made a name for themselves at the Jets’ rookie minicamp — and they were rewarded Monday with NFL contracts.
The Jets signed free-agent LBs Cory Reamer (Alabama) and Brashton Satele (Hawaii), both of whom came to the camp as non-roster players.
It became clear from Day 1 that Reamer was going to be signed, as Rex Ryan raved about Reamer’s ability to digest the defensive playbook and direct traffic. Ryan joked that Reamer knew the defense better than coordinator Mike Pettine. He was a two-year starter at Alabama, finishing with 90 tackles and three sacks. As a senior, on the Crimson Tide’s national-championship team, he posted 50 tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one blocked kick and one interception — a nice resume for a non-drafted player.
Satele missed last season due to a shoulder injury, but as a junior he had 53 tackles, one sack and one interception.
To make room for them, rookie free-agent LB Broderick Stewart (Vanderbilt) was waived.

They’re getting the pay per view package and staying together as a family to watch Warrior games. He has 4 tix in section pp, row 45 in a covered area…no worries about rain. $145 per seat plus $85 premium for total of $230 per seat. Don’t have the graduation list, but that would be great. He can play as a graduate student in the fall. And that will mean he can free up a scholarship in December.

Kazz UH has to win out in the WAC tournament to get a good seed and regional site. UH has a good RPI but the conference has a lower rating than other conferences. 64 teams in 16 regional sites, last years break down by conference: Big 10 6, Big 12 7, Pac 10 6, SEC 9, ACC 3 and Big East 3, 34 teams from the BCS. add conference champs, leaves a few spaces for BCS at large teams who ultimately play the top seeded teams in the first round. Win the WAC, UH has a chance in being a two seed in a regional, 16 regional sites and UH ranked between 20 and 25 should favor a second seed.

National Red Cross director, I beleive, makes over $1 million per year. WHY? Current director is wife of a former big wig US Senator.
that’s why I seldom donate to charitable organizations. Years ago, a magazine mentioned that a particular non-profit who rakes in millions of dollars each year, only 15% goes “over-seas” to assist children. 85% stays in the US to pay for salaries/administration costs.
And, I will never donate to the Red Cross because of something I learned in 1956.

Top heavy is at times overstated in things such as foundations (sometimes that are not). If you look at total dollars raised over the years to support the mission of the institution, the salary paid to the folks securing those dollars may be justified. I have no detail on the matter and am just suggesting a deeper look. I also believe that smart donors will ask what percentage of the total is toward the program/capital/endowment and what goes into cost of administration. If it is indeed out of kilter, a smart donor would probably not support the institution.
Jay Shidler, a very smart developer recently made a significant donation to the UH through the foundation and followed that with another sizable after gift.
I am certain he did his due diligence and saw that his donation was going toward his intended purpose.
But, as A-House pointed out, there are those charitable organizations who are “misaligned” and, as both of you correctly state, do not deserve to be supported.

Your writings is very informative & quite objective. Reading about the landscape of how the conferences are looking to realigning themselves and the affect it may have on Hawaii and the WAC, looks to be problematic. Hopefully the pieces will fall in a positive direction for Hawaii. Not to sure for the WAC due to the commissioner not being very pro-active.
Meaning JD needs to really get it in gear to be pro-active on Hawaii’s part to seek membership in the PAC-10. Although according to the criteria stated by you it appears highly unlikely.
Being television plays a big part for revenues to the school one suggestion I believe worh exploring is this. Hawaii being a tourist destination can help to get those TV stattions to tune in on the sports broadcast when Hawaii plays by offering free round trips to our state. Not only for the mainlanders but have it piped in to the Asian markets and have them be able to win too. Of course they need to be viewing and call into a toll free number when their names are announced. The tourism industry, private business, the state as well as UH can all help finance these free trips.
When visiting teams come over treat them to a stay like they came over for a vacation. Have things for them to do besides just coming to play, providing the coaches don’t mind. Think that this will help the PAC-10 recruit more players from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean.
Also each PAC-10 team can be marketed to the Asian market by having them identify with a college. Promote and create relationships between the school and different communities or why not even a country.
Start thinking and start creating. Make it happen all those who have the influence and money to do so.
Just a few ideas to get the status quo thinking. There is a lot that Hawaii can do to help the PAC-10 to be more competitive and create more revenues.
Re-I would have the highest regards and respects to the Chancellor or Athletic Director if they vetoed Coach Mack’s decision in having Moniz back on the team if all the purported facts and rumors were indeed true.
It would speak volumes of them and the school if they stepped in and did something.
It would also preserve the sanctity of all the football players, past and present, that approach representing UH with honor.
Not doing anything only adds to the crazy odyssey ride that Coach Mack is taking everyone on.

I wouldn’t call for his head unless we know precisely what the facts were and only if the facts justify his removal.
If it is strictly a private matter that affects only Moniz personally, it’s his prorogative to keep it quiet.
My 2-cents
What seems to be the problem? The Moniz situation is private. It was handled by those who know and understand the problem and situation. They deemed it unnecessary for the rest of us to know the details.
A valet once tried to sell me Zippy’s chili tickets as he took my keys. I bought one.
What was I supposed to do? I needed a parking space and I wasn’t about to tick off the guy in charge of my car.

Any attempt for JD to contact the Pac-10 now would result in a simple “no” from the Pac-10. There is *nothing* that can be done before this summer when a lot of decisions may need to be made by the conferences.
Even worse, UH contacting the Pac-10 now would be leaked to the public and be used as another example of why the WAC is a sinking conference (like BSU begging the MWC every year). That would significantly hurt the WAC and probably insure that BSU, Nevada, and Fresno State line up for the MWC.
Travel expenses will *not* influence the TV networks at all. TV ratings are far, far more important and they never hesitated to cover an attractive game in Hawaii no matter what the travel costs were.
The *best* case scenario for UH is that the MWC loses a team or two due to other conferences and then they decide that they need to expand to 12 teams. That is UH’s best shot to be one of the teams invited…I’m assuming that BSU, Nevada, and Fresno State are ahead of UH in the pecking order, so the MWC needs to lose a few teams to need to invite UH.
The worst case scenario is that UH would be left behind when (NOT IF) some teams leave the WAC. A WAC with Utah State, Idaho, La Tech, NMSU, and SJSU would *not* be attractive to any TV network and attendance would plummet. Long-term, the teams in that conference could end up out of D-IA.

I know that there are people who are hoping that the WAC could poach some MWC teams such as SDSU, UNLV, etc. I would love that because I can easily get to games at SDSU and UNLV. However, it simply isn’t realistic to think that the WAC could convince the MWC teams to switch. Here are some of the reasons:
1. ESPN first went to the MWC to offer them a TV contract and then went to the WAC because the MWC got a *lot* more money from their own network+the other channel they are on. The MWC gets a lot more money now, and money is power right now in athletics. Plus, the TV contracts are about to be renegotiated and the MWC can easily take ESPN’s offer next time and the WAC will be left with basically nothing.
2. BSU wants to go to the MWC regardless if they lose some teams because of reduced travel costs. Having their fans be able to drive to games instead of having a conference that goes all the way from Honolulu to Ruston is a big thing for them. If BSU goes the WAC loses its only nationally ranked team.
3. Non-AQ conferences (like the WAC and MWC) make a significant portion of their money from men’s basketball…and the MWC gets a *lot* more basketball money than the WAC. Didn’t they have 3 ranked teams this season for basketball? They get more teams in the tournament and they win more games than the WAC…so the revenue difference between the conferences is significant.
The teams leaving the MWC will be leaving all of that basketball money behind, and that money keep flowing for 6 years or so. That will give the MWC a lot of money to use to attract teams.
4. The bottom of the MWC is better than the WAC and they have significantly increased their budgets. SJSU, NMSU, and others have to worry about losing their D-IA status…SDSU just increased their student fee so that they get $10 million per year from the students!

It’s one thing if people truly believe that what Moniz allegedly did was wrong, based on their personal beliefs of what is “ethical” and “wrong”, and that he shouldn’t have the privilege to play college football.
Its another thing if they’re using the guise of “ethics” against Coach Mack soley for their personal dislike of the coach.

The problem with merging the conferences is that you have to have a core number of teams that have been in the same conference or the conference will lose its NCAA basketball tournament automatic spot. For example, if you took 5 teams from each conference, that conference would NOT have a NCAA spot.
That is why you end up having one conference pick off the best teams from another conference instead of having the conferences merge. Plus, some of the weaker football teams in the MWC have had decent men’s basketball teams recently. If the MWC doesn’t want to drop their bottom teams, there really is no chance to merge the two conferences like you’ve been mentioning for years.
After the initial “huh?” reaction, I chuckled. This would take us full-circle, ironically. 🙂
The other problem of having some schools leave the WAC and some teams leave the MWC is that all of those schools would be leaving behind the millions earned from the NCAA tournament. Can any school afford that loss in this economy? The MWC has earned a LOT more NCAA money than the WAC, so those teams have less incentive to leave unless it is for the Pac-10 or Big 12.

While the details of what Moniz allegedly did are a private matter, it does beg the question of how effective a leader he can now be. Prior to his absence he obviously had the respect of the team. While he still should have the physical talents and experience, you have to wonder if he can overcome this and gain the respect of his teammates. I really hope he is able to do so. When he stepped onto the scene last season, it was clear that he was a guy that a lot of people, including myself, wanted to see be successful.
The money earned from this year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament will generate money for conferences for *6* years. Can schools afford to have a hole in their budge for 6 years?
Kazz no hosting for UH, but i don’t want to see them in the regional with Washington or Arizona at their place. Last year Washington was sent to Massachusetts, what happened to keeping a team close to home to save on travel costs.

Personally, I think I would have a hard time as a teammate of Moniz to follow him as a leader now. It remains to be seen how the boyz who put on the “green and white” (and black) and line up to block for him and practice with/against him will be able to deal with this. I applaud him for apologizing to the team because those are the guys he has ultimately let down. I know the guys on the team are like brothers to each other so it remains to be seen if the hurt he caused can be forgiven.

The UH Foundation currently has a legislative cap on the amount that it may ‘bank’ at $3.5m per year. Administrative fees are charged to all deposits (one time only) at 3.5%.
This amount covers salaries and operations. Currently, the UHF performs the services of HR, Fiscal operations, and IT for booster clubs including UHAA, AKA and Na Koa.
In the last major gift campaign the Foundation raised over $325m. This amount was/is used to cover scholarships, student programs, and community programs and information may be found at (http://www.uhf.hawaii.edu/gift_impact/centennial_campaign.aspx).
What does this 3.5% provide for a booster group??
As an example, as Executive Director of Na Koa I was a Foundation employee and was supplied with the typical IP phone, fiber optic Internet connectivity, and computer. UHF supplied the personnel with the expertise to update the website and our fiscal operations, so for the first time Na Koa could accept credit card payments both on-line and via hard copy. The database was placed into a format that was searchable and parallel to both UHAD and UHF databases and for the first time in 28 years the data was backed up. The Foundation database was available so Na Koa could request an alumni e-mail event infomration blast for the Seattle, Las Vegas, and San Jose games.
To be honest and up front, I migrated to another job opportunity and still work for the Foundation and still work behind the scenes with the Warrior Football efforts. I don’t believe that most of the Foundation employees are in it for the salary because ‘it ain’t what it is made out to be’.
I thought I would give you my perspective on what the Foundation offers to the University and to fans and supporters vis a vis memberships in booster groups.

Based on your information, the best thing UH and Donavan can do is wait and hope the cards fall a certain way that will give Hawaii a chance to be part of the MWC. If not Hawaii will end up out of Div-1a.
Sad to think this is a probability.
As I mentioned I believe UH needs to be pro-active and sell itself on how they could be an asset to the PAC-10. Just my take.

It’s not a matter of being niele.
It all boils down to Coach Mack having no scruples. My take on this is that it should have been examined more by the higher ups.
But most die hard UH fans, like d1 and others (and maybe even the higher ups), would trade proper scruples for wins. Right? Me? I never will.
Isn’t it blasphemous for the school to promote honor, morality and integrity in the student code yet the star quarterback breaches this code and is welcomed back after sitting out three weeks? Three weeks? Meanwhile a basketball player who had real personal problems, misses a Samoan class, was indefinitely suspended.
Moniz “personal problem” as we’re seeing amounts to a euphemism.
I could go on further about the coaches scruples. The lies to recruits (like Stewert). The lies to walk ons that he publically said that were going to get scholarships. The lie about saying how if a coaching position opens up how it would go to a former player. How he anointed Ron, saying as long as he’s at Hawaii Ron will always be his OC, then to break this promise. How he reneged on Funaki about how he said the player was going to be a big part of the offense, only to see that Funaki wasn’t even given a chance. And how he conducted himself at the WAC media day.
For all I care shelter Moniz. But stop sheltering the coach and his improper scruples. You don’t need to be that hard up for wins. Most coaches can do it the proper way.
As an aside, we had lunch at Ted’s. Had to wait a little while for the food, but well worth the wait. The pies and cakes were delicious.

bluefin, the loss of stewart was not coach mc’s problem, it was UH admission office who still to this day, will not try to remedy their admission problems. As for Coach Lee, it comes with the territory. As for Funaki, it was a disappointment, but he understood what his role would be and did a good job. If Coach Mc is a problem, why are all these kids who left HI for “greener pastures” want to return to UH??? And most have to foot their own bill for a year where if they had gone to UH from the beginning, they would probably be on a scholie.
what I feel bad about is the 30+ kids who will be temporarily cut from the program after they put in a lot of effort for spring training. It is part of any major football program, but it is always sad when you have to tell a player that he is being cut. My best to them and hope that some of them are invited back.

I think some return given that they have no other choice.(homesickness, hard time making the transition, family). For all we know for them returning to Manoa is their only refuge. If Hilo was in the WAC I would bet a lot more kids would go there than being a part of Coach Mack’s crazy odyssey ride he’s taking everyone on. I would even bet the Lees would escape, and go to Hilo, too.

If the conference decisions are made in about 2 months, I don’t see what UH can do to be pro-active to sell themselves to the Pac-10. The BCS evaluation period is 2008-2011, and UH’s computer rankings over the past 2 years in football weren’t good. UH’s basketball record over the past 2 years wasn’t good. Claiming the Japan market has no credibility when Pac-10 schools *already* have research links to Japanese Universities and are far better known in Japan than UH.
The Pac-10 is expanding for their TV network. TV networks pay based on number of subscribers and the ratings that teams bring. We cannot increase Hawaii’s population or change the on-field results that have already occurred over the past 2 years. We cannot change the fact that travel to Hawaii for nonrevenue sports would be a BIG financial and time burden on Pac-10 teams.
If there is nothing that can get UH to be the Pac-10’s choice over Colorado and Utah or others in the next 2 months, then panicking and making the WAC look bad would put UH in a worse position. Hopefully UH is networking with the other WAC schools that could be targets to get some agreement that they will work together…though I get the impression (because of the actions they are openly doing) that BSU already has one foot out the door and isn’t worried about UH.

As far as the Moniz situation, I agree witht the others who say its between Moniz and his team mates, and if they are okay with it, then we should be.

Some schools really are generating a crazy amount of revenue. Texas has their stadium on campus and they kept expanding it, bringing in huge amounts of money with luxury boxes and upgraded seating. In addition to the high ticket prices, people are required to donate large sums of money if they want good seats.
A lot of schools are losing HUGE amounts of money, even those in BCS AQ conferences.

If it warrants it, what’s wrong with that? Read again. My take on this is that the higher ups should give this issue regarding Moniz some examination.
Is that bad?
In retrospect the higher ups should at the very least recommend that Moniz’s scholarship be pulled. Life lessons have to be learned here. The image of the coach and the program have to be saved.
In the past when the coach has done good he’s gotten my praise, so to say I have an axe to grind wouldn’t be fair. Would it?

I TOTALLY agree with bluefin tuna its all about the wins I don’t care what the coaches say Bryant Moniz will be the starter for the US game which means the depth chart for the quarterbacks from spring practice is bogus. The coach is under the gun this year because of the last two years of disappointing seasons. How was the firing of Mel de laura handled and the Lee brothers are being slowly being pushed out also but one of the people that really got burned was Inoke Funaki last year where was the Noke offense that was being talked about all last summer the poor guy was barely on the field except for pat attempts.
Let’s see if I can raises Kazz’s blood pressure a few hundred points.
ST has indicated that he’s not going to Las Cruces to cover the softball tournament.
C’mon guys, it’s a UH sports! Be the local paper you’re supposed to be and cover the local teams!

al, there is something not right about this ex boise bb recruit. he comes from a state which is surrounded by lots of bb powerhouses and with his height, he should have tremendous interest, but something or things is lacking. Speed, footwork, shooting, etc. Watching the NCAA tourney, speed and quickness is more important than height, but if you have height, speed, and quickness, now you have a potential recruit for UH.

I heard that AlaskaAir is taking over the route that Delta is dropping. Used to be NWA’s route before the merger. Hope Alaska keep the same schedule and service.

Ralph/jmXXXX – from a business standpoint, why would you spend the money. $800 for airfare, $100 per night for hotel for 4 nights, $40 per day per diem totals $1,360. You can have a writer expand the story here using wire service info for nothing. And the fact is people will still be interested in it because its covered.
IMHO, ST needs to lay low as he is auditioning for a permanent position with the new company. Standing out is not a good thing right now.
momona I hope you’re right about the wire service covering the WAC softball tournament because I have had problems getting the live stats to some of the away games. Hopefully, the WAC will set up live stats for all the sb games.

Wow! Lots of things happened in Hawaii since I last read the blog. I heard about the QB situation there and all I’ll say is that it’s ugly. The Conference shake-ups is pretty crazy. But from what I saw from some emails that I was privi to, we(SMU) may benefit from it by going to the Big XII. That would be crazy. The WAC-MWC alliance has some problems in that the founding schools left the WAC because, among other things, the travel costs of having to play Hawaii every year. That would be a shame as BYU-Hawaii has always been a great rivalry for us.
