Satele gets tryout with Jets, Rocky to 49ers
After a deal with the Oakland Raiders fell through, Brashton Satele is now headed East for a tryout with the New York Jets.
Although Satele signed a contract, which included a bonus, the Raiders did not finalize the deal. The Jets then called, inviting Satele for an audition.
Mike Smith, who was a UH grad assistant tutoring the linebackers last year, is now an assistant with the Jets.

Former UH defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea will participate in the San Francisco 49ers’ mini camp this weekend in Santa Clara, Calif. If Savaiigaea is successful in his tryout, he hopes to earn a free-agent contract.

Interesting, Brashton goes from a struggling franchise to one that is positioned to seriously compete for a spot in a super bowl in 2011 or 2012.
Hopefully Brashton can actually get picked up as a free agent and be able to make the team. Hawaii fans can watch the Hawaii-Army game on 9/11 then watch Hisatake and the Panthers play against the New York Giants on 9/12. Stay one more night for the MNF contest between the Jets and the Ravens.
I was hoping Brashton stayed with the Raiders, they are rebuilding their defense and their offense is a wreck, say bye to JaMarcus Russell, soon to be the number one flop of the NFL draft ever.
Before I head off to bed, I just want to say that I never expected that I would see Honolulu with only one Downtown Daily and a combo conglomerate of television stations.

The Boise football writer, Murphy, in two articles, writes that he believes that Boise has three strikes against them in joining the MWC or having the MWC extend an invite. He also writes that should BYU and Utah leave the MWC he questions if Boise is in a better position than they are with the WAC and the TV contract with ESPN.
Raiders = Retarded…bottom line! Good luck to Brashton and hopefully he can earn his spot. The Jets defense is one of the best units in the NFL and yup they will be playoff bound again. If Brashton can be on the roster and just so happens the Jets win a Superbowl, how mean would that be as an undrafted free agent with a ring already…good luck!

I like to think the other way that it’s the organization, not the player, that is the “flop” or “bust.”
For all of the scouting and interviews and Wonderlic tests, teams should know the type of player they’re getting. If a player doesn’t cut it because of poor work habits, well, with all of the pre-draft research, a team should know what his work habits were going to be.

Getting tickets from the box office is a pain in the neck – then you have to walk over to the softball field where you have to have a gate and ticket attendants etc.
Assume that you have 500 attendees at the softball game, at $10 a pop, is the $5,000 enough to pay off the overhead, the personnel and other costs (which would include security fences etc?)
I like the idea of a calabash bowl, bottle or what have you but charging admission without making a profit goes against my pake blood!
With Milovic leaving, does that give Coach Gib another scholarship to give another recruit?

Sheesh, what was all the whining and crying from Wallace/Nash/Wheeler about how hard it was to recruit Hawaii and how Hawaii was unique and nobody wanted to come here and we could only take foreign guys and jc transfers and on and on and on.
Gib doesn’t seem to have a problem signing all types of kids. Man, can’t wait to watch a good UH hoops team again.

Re: Coach Coolen’s position of NO admission to watch softball.
While it may seem to be a nice gesture, it does not assist UHAD to realistically attack the annual deficit.
For a NON-REVENUE sport with a very large overhead/cost, it would behoove UHAD to consider a small “charge/admission fee” or even donation at each and every HOME game to reduce the heavy expense.
I recall the “track and field” team asking for donations during a Wahine baskteball game.
Need to put some heads together on how best to help Jim D gain additional $$$ to reduce the deficit. Football cannot do it all and it will take some time before we see the 40K+ fans of yester year.

It looks like a very interesting coming year for UH mens BB based on what Coach Gib has done so far – very, very exciting!
And, must agree with your statements about recruiting Hawaii.
Wallace and Nash just liked to use excuses for recruiting. They didn’t know what to do and used that lame excuse to cover their butts. Gib has done more in a month than Nash and Wallace combined.
Since I’ve never seen Milovic play, we can’t say if it’s a loss or a gain for the basketball program. Nonetheless, it’s another opportunity to recruit another player who can contribute. It would nice to get a really good defensive player, who is very athletic and quick. Somebody like 6’6″ or like Vincent Smalls. At any rate, I am stoked with the players that Gib signed. The existing scholarship players still here are Amis, Thompson, Johnson, Williams, and Kurtz. Walk-ons Lutu, Enos, and Albrectson are on the fence as some capable walk-on players may surface.
The change over in one year is unbelievable and I think we needed this. More changes are in order before the summer is over and for the better.
It is also important to get the 2 more assistant coaches on board, coaches who are great teachers of the game and get the players to improve their talent and their skills. The new kids also seem to be good students as well. You have to ask yourself, if Nash, Wheeler, etc. was still here, what the recruiting would have been? Not very good I think.
Gib is showing that he has a lot of contacts from his experiences and I believe he has a good eye for talent, not to mention closing the deal.
Let the basketball season begin now!

brandyn akana is in. officially he won’t be on board until he completes this semester at byuh. he is an asst professor there as well as an asst coach.
the last position went wayside when we didn’t have enough money to keep him. however, more and more it appears that eran ganot may be retained past june. this one is still in the air and only gibber/ganot know for sure.
looks like tim shepherd won’t be retained as the dir of basketball ops his bio is no longer listed on the mbb website.
could be johnny white moves up into his slot from video coord.
on second thought…
softball could be looking at say $4 per head w/250 average attendance or $1000 revenue per home game. with 21 home dates including tournments that’s $21,000. nothing to sneeze at since it represents $21k that wasn’t there before.
however, that money goes in to the general athletic funds doesn’t it?
collecting donations at say $1 per head (of course we know how local people are a lot more generous than that) with 250 in attendance produces $250 per date equal $5250 that goes directly to the softball program (assumption).
therefore, the softball program would be better off with the donation box since the bucks go directly for their use. $5k can go a long way for the team.
yup, all along artie wilson was right. the players are out there you just got to develop contacts, work hard at it, recruit 24/7, lots of kids in the la area, etc, etc.
the most amazing thing is that the gibber is still two asst coaches shy and he’s done all this in four weeks. he was right that recruiting is a two year drill since nearly all of these recruits had contact with him previously.
and the athletic department is missing a most opportune time to sell basketball season tickets at a special reduced rate for new sales!

Based upon my professional experience at raising funds for good causes at community events, over time the donation station(s) at the softball games will bring in much more than charging admission – even before taking into consideration the costs.
Given that there are going to be some major improvements to the softball stadium itself over the next three years, any decision about admission fees should be deferred until then. This is not a simple thing to do and requires multiple layers of administrative approvals along the way.
What I’d like to see as a draw to bring people in throughout the season are band concerts before three or four home games – perhaps out of the lawn area on the way to the bathrooms.
Another one would be talk story sessions with coaches & team members in other sports along with information about play dates, ticket sales, etc. Cross-selling is done in the real world – why not here as well.

Al Rainbow Cliff said it all along, come to his turf, lots of players, he can bea their guide without falling out of grace with the NCAA on recruiting. Coaches get the intro to the UH coaches, they can build from there and recruiting becomes easier. A very long time ago, coach Mcguire out of Marquette used to go to the play grounds of NYC to find his players, he always bragged, the playgrounds is where the talent is, just got to be willing to go there. Chicago, LA, lots of inner city kids to look at, find the qualifiers with basketball talent and reload.

Just a side track comment to Coach Coolen’s reluctance for pay admission to the games – it may be that the cost attendant to the charging admission – i.e. hiring personnel at the gates, new fencing, getting logistical support at the ticket office etc etc might be a factor in his thinking.
Donations would probably be a better way of doing it. We did it before – and again, an off-the-subject remark for ALL Tsaikos – don’t forget Stretch’s set-up with UHF for the Tsaiko funds. I heard that he put in a hunk of change to set it up – thanks Stretch! – If I were in Napa, I would get you a big bottle of Gallo!

JD is giving us special one-time permission to collect donations at the softball game. We’ll see how it goes. Friday night might be light due to the Warrior Bowl draw, and baseball. Saturday, softball & baseball are scheduled at the same time. I would like to see a permanent donation box at both sides of home plate, first base & third base, at the top of the stairs on the concourse. Yes, someone from the Foundation or Athletics will have to be at all games to collect the donations after the game, but if you put the box where the fans are you don’t have to worry about someone getting into the box.
I spoke to some of the football players (defense mainly) this morning about coming to the softball games on Saturday to sit with us by the donation box. We might get some of them to come. Chaplain Barrett (sp?), FSA, was going to get the word out to the players involved in that ministry program to help. Yay!
anyone know how to look in the archives for prior year UHAD report on year cost of athletic programs: mbb & wbb, baseball, mvb & wvb, softball, football, soccer-fiscal report that showed whether the sport year end ended in black or red numbers.
After watching the QBs toss balls toward (trash) cans after practice, I went to the box office & changed my seat. If you have a non-premium seat, you may change it now.
I’m glad to hear the BC mentioned the donation box at the sb game, keep the lines of communication open and promote 24/7, its marketing 101.
slugger…perhaps bringing out collection receptacles and pass the bucket, one each for each row starting from the left to right with volunteers starting off buckets for each row and in-between folks to pass it over from section to section with the end volunteers making the collection and then turning them over.
perhaps having the donation buckets at a regular time each game would be nice. such as after the third inning or between the top of the third and the bottom of the third (or second inning) you know whenever the height of the attendance is present.
i would suggest that two persons count the money immediately and have some sort of accounting signed off by both to insure integrity.
we do this every sunday at services and it works. anyone who has attended a new hope service would know what i am talking about. it works. i wouldn’t want to leave a bucket out with money even if it is in plain view. someone with “slight of hands” skills could wreak havoc.

Congrats to Coach Gib on his recruiting efforts. Glad to see these guys committing at a rapid pace. Love that all these guys have multiple years to play as well. In a couple years they are going to be dangerous. Next year with Coach Gib having a year under his belt, I’m sure we’ll see a nice crop of overseas talent coming in to compliment the foundation of players already committed!

Judging by all the exuberance it seems like Coach Gib is pushing the right buttons.
When you reflect back on the selection of the new coach the selection committee weren’t made up of members of the beaten path, either. I say this made a difference. In fact, I wrote prior what sense does it make of having a selection committees made up of familiar faces that made selections of coach(es) that turned out in being flops. Obviously somebody thought likewise.

i think what we are seeing is that gibber has got it.
he knows first the value of recruiting as priority one.
he works it hard.
he knows it is a work in constant progress, two years out he says beating the path for recruits.
he knows two years is minimum.
this recruit class he is bringing in didn’t happen overnight. the majority of them have been in his cell phone list of contacts for years.
he works it hard.
and the final piece of his success in recruiting is that he is the kind of guy these kids want to trust and play for. not saying he is a great salesman, altho that really helps, he is a great person of good character and has the personality to go alone with all that.
in contrast, our last two head coaches really lacked the kind of personality that is not only outgoing but believable and don’t come off as warm and fuzzy types.

OT China loses gold medal(s) because athlete was (were) too young. Why complain if a young kid beats you, I thought it would be problem if someone used an older person like the Philipines did in the Little league world series where age brackets are instituted.
The donation jars are sealed and the contents will be turned over directly to the UH Foundation staff on Friday and Saturday after the games.
There is no reason to assume that the money will “disappear” between the time it is dropped into the donation jar and when it is counted.
Re setting up the Tsai-ko account with Koa Anuenue – the minimum amount probably was $1,000. Mahalo to Stretch for picking up the initial contribution.
Although there was some money left over after purchasing the two bikes last fall, it is with Na Koa, the football support organization.

All of the accounts are, in the end, Foundation accounts. The balance from in the Na Koa account (bikes) was given to the football program. Any balance from the 2007 WAC championship bracelets were given to the softball program. I don’t think we need or can move the balances to the Tsaiko account, unless we have sub-accounts under the general Tsaiko account.

All this men’s basketball talked has got me thinking, when are you getting Coach Gib on the Warrior Beat Show?
#80 A House if an individual is a world class athlete who qualifies for the Olympics and he or she loses to someone younger than 14, lets say a 12 year old, than he or she should suck it up and be humble, to lose to a 12 year and have your country petition the olympic board is ridiculous. I know the U.S. was one of the countries complaining or questioning the age of the Chinese athletes, primarily in gymnastics, our athletes got to train harder and just win. I can see if the complaint centered around steroid use, but it was age related, and sour grapes prevailed again. U.S. seem to whine a lot when they don’t win.

Isn’t a 12 year old in 6th or 7th grade, to lose to a 6th or 7th graders in the Olympics where some athletes can be as old as 30+ is laughable. Yes I know, usually the athletes are young(er) in gymnastics to be nimble but they have to be athletic and their muscles are not fully built up like an older teenager or adult.

Al I tried oysters at a French restaurant at a Convention I attended, needless to say, I put it in mouth, didn’t like it, had 9 other people on my table, got sicker by the second, what do I do with it with only a cloth napkin. I ditched it in the napkin, took off the restroom, but I left the napkin on my seat and that damn waiter came around when I was gone and unfolded it- he had to put a new one on my setting. None of the sales ladies said a word to me. 🙂

I think with a release he plays this season, without a release he sits 1 year. Different for a player already enrolled and taking classes in school, he sits 1 year, or 2 if transferring within a conference with a 2 year wait rule.

Just a thought…maybe the volunteers should wear a uniform signifying who they should be giving the donation to and have the announcer at the game announce it over the PA. Since this is a tsaiko idea, why not wear your tsaiko shirts. Personally, I wouldn’t trust my money to some random person.

Absolutely right. I heard Tom Henderson on Artie’s show once and he was saying he lives in Texas I think and he was more than willing to help recruit kids to UH. All they had to do was ask him. Artie was saying how UH needed more junkyard dogs instead of the soft kids they were getting.
Never saw any kids from Texas via Tom come in.

Ralph..#91..agree…Olympics should be a display of human performance at it’s optimum…age requirements are to ensure the athletes aren’t “pushed’ into training too early, when their bodies are still growing. That said, I was amazed at the skills those young ladies displayed.

If Jim Donovan is listening I would recommend that UH already start to offer UH mens’s basketball season tickets for this coming year. Offer an discount package with the priviso to agree to buy season tickets for a second year at the same price. Pay for the first year now, and pay of the next year later next year. This way, the program can get a head start with what promises to be a very interesting 2010-2011. All of this, to the efforts of Coach Gib in getting the new recruits. Very very exciting.

I know Coach Gib was on after he was hired, but now that he got all these recruits I want to ask him how he does it. Especially since no other UH coach could seem to get this kind of talent. Is it just his old USC connections? Or is it his new assistant coach from Brazil? Etc.
RainbowCliff discussed how all the former bkb players are scattered all around the globe and how they could help tremedously with recruiting or giving the heads up to the coaches…all it takes is communications with them…well, isn’t it time for somebody to get a program in gear?
Talking wahine/kane bkb, stbll, bsbll, ftbll..etc…all these programs should have a communications programs with former athletes…imho..
Coach Gib definetly has been in contact with basketball recruits over the years. This shows that being in front of and in constant contact with the recruits, will bring results. How good the athlete will be, can only manifest itself on the court during games and not on paper. Beleive the potential is there.
Definetly one has to be a good communicator, listener and know certain facts to help in the recruiting process or help defuse the competition.
Coach Gib seems to be one great salesman and must be genuine to have done what he has done so far. Most people no matter what age they are will have that inate feeling about trusting and associating with that person.
Having talent makes it a lot easier to coach and if that coach has that ability to mold a team together which I believe Coach Gib has will bring much success to the program.
There is so much positive about our islands and lifestyle.
Seems like Coach Gib is maximizing all that he can out of his “Rolodex” from SC and may be reaching out to the recruits with a “play now” pitch instead of riding pine for the Trojans next year.

(For those that cannot attend Wahine Softball LIVE this Saturday May 1st)
I just got off the phone with a programming representative and the Senior Night Double Header for Wahine Softball MAY not air, at least live, on K-5.
This is totally dependent on the success of UH Warrior Volleyball against Stanford on Thursday. IF the Warriors beat Stanford and advance, K-5 WILL televise their next match at 4pm HST LIVE, which is the SAME time as the Wahine Softball game.
IF volleyball wins, the softball game will still be shown, but in delay later that evening. The programming representative said that it is not sure if BOTH games of the softball double header will be shown.
In summary:
IF VOLLEYBALL BEATS STANFORD:
-K-5 will air their next match at 4pm on Saturday May 1st Hawaii standard time
-Wahine Softball will still air, but in a tape delay and it is unconfirmed if BOTH games will be shown.
IF VOLLEYBALL LOSES:
-Wahine Softball’s season finale DH will be shown in full live at 4pm HST.
Now, this will cause a problem for those of us attending the game live but still attempting to DVR the softball games on Saturday. The TV guide listing on DVR is all screwed up and inaccurate. As we know DVR is operating on the programing and not completely on the time frame.
Anybody heard from the TOTs yet? Hope they arrived safely.

The Advertiser tech squad has problems with the archived episodes sometimes. I’m sorry about that, I’ve had your exact problem before.
Sometimes it can take a few weeks before the archived episode is available. I think that the problem for the Graves episode is that they had another episode shortly after it, so the most recent episode is the one available now and they were worried about getting things ready for that episode instead of getting the Graves episode archived.

DVR Issues this weekend.
For those attempting to preset their DVR on 05/01 for either volleyball or softball the pending situation with the TV listings via Oceanic presents a problem.
Unless K5 and Oceanic are quick to act, one will be unable to set their DVR to record the games.
DVR works off the programming codes listed for a show or event, NOT the time frame.
Example:
If you look at the TV listings right now (6:02pm HST 04/28/2010) for Sat May 1st, on K5, the ONLY UH sporting event on is softball, but at 7pm, which is INCORRECT as the game starts at 4pm. Now, as mentioned above, if Warrior Volleyball loses and only softball will be shown at 4pm, the only way to DVR the softball game ahead of time is IF Oceanic changes their listed line up so it it properly shows College Softball at 4pm.
You CANNOT just record whatever other listed program is on at that time and expect softball to be recorded regardless of what the programming note says. I called Oceanic to confirm this.
The reason why I called is because LAST week, Wahine Softball WAS properly listed at 4pm on 05/01/10 for both games, then the line up changed and it was erased without me knowing. So I called Oceanic and they explained it to me.
So John Fink is gonna have to let his people know ASAP to let Oceanic know ASAP to adjust their line up accordingly for DVRers as soon as tomorrow’s vball game ends. Keep in mind, there are no K5 people working on the weekends.

Nice to see Rodney Bradley back on the field running some routes. Hope he is fully recovered before season starts. Concerning the Chinese girl who lost her medal. While at first glance this looks unfair we need to look at the rest of the story. During the last Summer Olympics the Chinese were cheating by again by using under aged girls. The rest of the story is that the US also had under aged girls who were better than the ones who made the team. We of course played by the rules and didn’t let them compete. This is about playing fair.

Rules are rules, everyone got to abid by them. But that doesn’t take away the fact that our older athletes trained for 4 years or more and lost to 12 year olds. U.S. was reported to be in 4th place, gains medal after the Chinese forfeits its position. How will the U.S. athlete celebrate her medal, look, I finally got my medal because the Chinese gymnast cheated, she was younger than me and underage to compete.

It’s like football, they are schools with bigger enrollment than UH, larger endowment, better facilities, but on any given Saturday, the boys should be ready to compete and they have a chance to win the game. Even the Mets won the world series with Seaver, Koosman, McGraw, they “believed” or McGraw did.

I’ve had a dozen & a half oysters at the Acme Oyster House in Nawlins. (No oyster challenge for me.) The guy who used to host the Victory Garden on PBS told me to drink hard liquor with raw oysters to kill any bacteria in the raw oysters. Don’t know if that really works, but a gin ‘n tonic or vodka tonic, goes well with an oyster dinner. 🙂 Ah, Nawlins…Dookie Chase, Preservation Hall, Cafe du Monde…

I have four DVD recorders set up to record everything I watch on tv. I need to call K5 to make sure that I have everything set properly since I’ll also also be recording stuff on three other channels as well.
The donation jars are ready to go. Everyone who stops by – even if they don’t drop something in the jar – will get a piece of candy or some other goodie, courtesy of DaDocs. We were planning to bring snackiecrackums for the Tsai-kos but decided to say mahalo to all the fans instead. .
Re an earlier post – the money left over from the bike fund is under the control of the football program, but it is only to be used for equipment purcjhases & repairs. At least, that’s what I was told last fall. Will update that information if Don Weir doesn’t respond.
I don’t know anything about the softball bracelet fund, but there’s no reason not to ask if it’s still sitting in an “award” fund or if it were spent on something else.
Which reminds me – someone asked about getting access to UH Athletic Department financial records. They, like viirtually all other kinds of state and county documents, are available. Please see me for instructions on how to request an inspection time.

About the only records NOT open are personnel documents which means that probably the Bolla Buy Out will not be available. However, it’s okay to ask for them and, if not accessible, you’ll get a written response with the appropriate legal citations.

I especially loved when Ralph didn’t know that “Momotaro is the friend of the dog, monkey and pheasant” !!! So Hawaii. I defy you to find that kine reference in any other blog on the planet.
And what a wild time in Warrior and Bows. Great stuff happening on all UH sports, exemplified by the VB win over Pepperdine. Staying in it, digging down, and pulling it out. We could really get used to that kind of pattern!!

P.S. Slugger, you won… The big but not basketball playing kid decided to go NAU. I guess we will start following the Bulla pattern now, but maybe pairing Warrior football trips with sidetrips to Flagstaff.
The bracelet monies was all handled by the UH foundation, so they would be the ones to know if there is any left over money, as far as Bob Coolen knows all monies have been spent. I guess if one was interested in finding out they could get some kind of accounting statement from the UH foundation.
Now I did not see any of the individual checks, but I had asked that whoever wrote a check put down on the bottom portion of the check in the memo area, “For softball bracelets” so if all the checks had that on them they could only be used to purchase the bracelets, now if that area was left blank or someone sent cash then those monies could have gone into some kind of general fund.
That about all I know of the money that was collected for the bracelets.
