ON THIS DATE IN 1978: Jeff Duva and DeWayne Jett come back on Wyoming
On this date in 1978, Hawaii overcame a 19-0 halftime deficit to beat visiting Wyoming in front of 40,182 fans at Aloha Stadium.
The Rainbow Warriors expected to have a huge home field advantage, with the second-largest crowd of the season for the Shrine Game and the luxury of sleeping in their own beds. Wyoming didn’t arrive in Honolulu until 1 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. kickoff and had its return flight already booked for after the game.
The jet lag didn’t hit the Cowboys until halftime, when Hawaii quarterback Jeff Duva and receiver DeWayne Jett were just a step ahead. Duva completed 11 passes in a row after a horrible first half and finished 14-for-20 for 245 yards. He hit Jett four times, twice for scores including the go-head tally.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Hawaii coach Dick Tomey said. “I’ve never been so proud of a team that I’ve coached or had anything to do with as I am of these guys.”
I was at the game with my high school friends, and sat in the yellow section in the north end zone. Used to have crowds then. I think it was the Shrine game or something like that. Wyoming had a QB named Phil Davis running the wishbone. I also remember Gary Allen breaking a long run.
