Estes to Jaguars, Satele to Raiders, Hisatake to Panthers

• Former UH center John Estes will sign a free-agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

• Former UH linebacker Brashton Satele will sign with the Oakland Raiders. He said he is waiting for a copy of the offer to be e-mailed or faxed.

•  Former UH offensive tackle Ray Hisatake will sign a free-agent contract with the Carolina Panthers.

“I’m really excited about this opportunity,” said Hisatake, who was offered a three-year contract.

Sailor Blue and Wafan each win a pair of tickets to tonight’s volleyball match. Because Wafan is off island, he’s giving his tickets to Pomai. I’ll leave a pair of tickets at Will Call for Sailor Blue and Pomai.

Also Bruce needs to call me at 256-0223 if he wants his tickets.

Anyway, I might have a couple of tickets left over, so it wouldn’t hurt for people to call me at, say, 6:45. Thanks.

This past week, compliance officer Amanda Paterson underwent yet another arthroscopic knee surgery. All of the surgeries stem from her days as the Rainbow Wahine’s soccer goalie.

So, you know the natural question.

And Amanda told the Warrior Beat: “I have contemporaneous documentation.”

I believe she’s eligible to play in the next alumni match.

I forwarded some info to my Tsai-ko Karaoke Call mailing list earlier in the evening. Haven’t used it for a year and it’s down to only 68 recipients. The news:

Club Genji has invited the Tsai-ko’s to participate in a karaoke contest.

Art sent an announcement on Thursday to the Tsai-ko email addys he had from the UH PPV games and other events. This contest has been going on for years, but it’s the first I heard about it… (probably because I’m never invited to enter) 😐 😕

Apparently, 8-10 karaoke bars participate annually–each running their own weekly contests independently and their own semi-final in July. The top male and female winners in two categories: pop and country, go to the finals held at the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce in August.
The winners there go on to Laughlin, Nevada for a national contest (all expenses paid). The songs are in english.

Anyway, Art has invited the Tsai-ko’s to participate and maybe represent Genji’s. His weekly contest in on Monday’s until July. Register (free) no later than 1700 and the contest starts at 1900. I have been told by others that you may enter every week if you don’t win. Also, the other participating bars might have theirs on different nights…

This could get real interesting if any Tsai-kos wants to enter. I’ll be part of the cheering team, not a contestant.

If you wish to be included on my Tsai-ko Karaoke mailing list for possible announcements, please send me an email at: stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com

Good conversation btn Ralph an al, both made some good points, but the major problem is you have two people involved that after a number of years still have no clue what it takes to get fans in the stands in Hawaii. JD can’t do it all.

USC Joe McKnight and Everson Griffen were heralded HS all americans, did very well at USC, but still available starting round 4. Both were 5 star recruits, I guess its what can you do for me at the next level without the hoopla from HS and college. McKnight was #1 HS Rb, and Griffen #1 HS DE recruits.

alright Oakland 6’6 314lb OT out of Maryland. 2 OT, Ilb and a DT. maybe Oakland ought to convert Russell to a blocking fb, can’t pass, got to pay him anyway.

  27. Ralph April 24, 2010 4:30 am

Oakland picked another wr, why? they wanted more speed, but Russell can’t get the ball off. Oakland could have used another OL. another OT, the odd man out becomes the guard candidate, including the current roster OT.

  28. Ralph April 24, 2010 4:30 am

  31. wafan April 24, 2010 4:45 am

Funny. Several cities are installing Red Light Cameras. Folks are whining and complianing about the $124 tickets.

Seems simple to me. If you obey traffic laws you do not get the ticket. Behave like an idiot and you are rewarded with a ticket.

Clowns are complaining that the cameras will cause more accidents with people actually stopping at traffic lights. Oh my goodness! And, they are serious!

    How stupid are these people?

  32. Ralph April 24, 2010 4:46 am

Jacoby Ford, WR, Clemson, Oakland 4th rd. ran a 4.28 40 at the NFL combine. 5’10 185. Okay, got Heyward-bey and Ford, speedsters, now can they catch. HB caught about 2 passes every other game, duh.

  33. Ralph April 24, 2010 4:53 am

the Tebow pick is stirring controversy, why, he doesn’t fit the ESPN analyst tangibles of a good qb. Tom Matte did okay at Baltimore, George Blanda played many years, find a role

  37. Kekoa (iPhone) April 24, 2010 5:07 am

Wafan ~ Stoplite cam in Sacramento caught red lite runners. The picture of 2 of the 5 occupants showed up very clear in the paper. Come to find out in the next days paper, the car was stolen by those 5 boys. Several calls came to identify the 2 boys in the photo.

The owner called in after seeing her license plate displayed. Poor woman was working at WalMart while he car was being jacked from the parking lot.

  38. wafan April 24, 2010 5:10 am

If not, maybe they remembered for their booking photos.

whew, is that a PR snafu at Kalaepohaku in selecting a football coach? what a comedy of errors; even more entertaining is DT saying he is going to Iolani and WL neither confirming nor denying any additions to his staff…is this ‘Law and Order’ or ‘ILH Gone Wild’……

see anyone/everyone at the scrimmage today 🙂

  66. bighilofan2 April 24, 2010 7:06 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

Hmmm. Nincompoops asserting constitutional right to reproduce. affects us all. NCAA rules Brashton lacked documentation in 2005, Someone must not have explained all the rules in 05 to the frosh. Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance. Gotta move forward. Hope we instruct frosh on NCAA rules top to bottom, avoiding dings from paper pushers, get NCAA opinions in writing so the future CP doesn’t get the blindside.

Nincompoops are in all walks of life. Sucks when it affects our Warriors.
At least Coach Mack seems to be steadfast, and is listening to y’all. Go Mack. Go Tsaikos. Go Warriors!

  107. papajoe2 April 24, 2010 8:17 am

Jason Campbell traded to Raiders. At least they drafted a couple of OTs to protect him. Now all Colt B has to do is beat out that #2 qb who is going down hill. Will McNabb last throughout the season? I don’t wish anything bad upon anyone but I just want Colt to get some real playing time.

  108. Old School Dave April 24, 2010 8:23 am

As Ralph #45, pointed out, Larry Hart, DE from Central Arkansas has been drafted by Jacksonville in the 6th round. Interesting to see players from such schools as West Texas A & M, Montana, S Dakota St., Southern Illinois, James Madison, and the like drafted. Strong showing for the WAC on day one with three first rounders. The MWC had no one taken, and the Pac-10 had only one (Tyson Alualu from Cal).

ST – heard that Advertiser editor Mark Platte is going to be the news director at KGMB/KHNL. Rick Blangiardi is the big dog there and he’s the chief of Na Koa. Would be ideal for them to hire you to improve their UH athletics coverage.

    What about working for UH???

  111. RedZone April 24, 2010 8:33 am

The OT from Hillsdale College is the one that caught my eye. I wonder how he will adjust to the speed in the NFL?

  112. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2010 8:40 am

What I love about the NFL draft is it is blind to classifications.
The NFL doesn’t care if a player comes from a BCS team or not.
    Loyalty is dead, too.
Pete Carroll drafted another safety instead of Taylor Mays.

    bhf2,

Nice to hear from you again!

    el guapo,

Davis may not be so crazy on this one; Campbell is better than anyone they got now. Almost wish it was Colt that was going to the Raiders. At least he would get a bona fide shot to beat out anyone there. I’m getting frustrated with his stint in Washington, which I initially thought would be good for him. I admit I was wrong. Thought Zorn would be good for Colt, but he turned out to be a SCHMUCK! It has tarnished my good memory of Zorn as a gunslinging, devil-may-care left-handed bomber. How could I possibly anticipate he’d turn into a constipated, footwork-obsessed, incompetent excuse for a coach..

    Stephen:

Did you pick up my phone message from yesterday? Just wanted to give you specifics about the CIP budget and whom you should contact to give some props for what has passed out.

ALL OF THE CIP APPROPRIATIONS FOR ALOHA STADIUM AND UH-MANOA IMPROVEMENTS ARE IN THE CONFERENCE DRAFT BUDGET WHICH WILL BE VOTED ON NEXT WEEK BY THE ENTIRE LEGISLATURE.

It is possible but highly unlikely that the Governor will veto the budget bill; however, what is much more likely to happen is that she will not authorize the start of the funding process on July 1 but instead will leave the paperwork on the desk for the next Fifth Floor Occupant to deal with sometime after December, 2010.

Specifically, the Department of Budget & Finance and the Department of Accounting & General Services will be the ones working with the UH Chancellor’s office. Will track down the specific human being(s) who will be overseeing the various projects sometime during the next couple of months.

Need to keep the pressure on the Gov – old or new – because it takes about a year to start the plan/design process, three to six months for the bidding process, and perhaps as long as four months for the construction phase.

Will confirm that the plans for the softball stadium upgrades include the possibility of creating under the bleachers both locker facilities as well as on-site restroom facilities for the public and an expansion of the refreshment area and press box. Since electricity & plumbing are already avaialbe, the critical issue is to make sure that there is enough room under the stands to build these facilities. it is my understand

It is also my understanding that many of the improvements will be a public-private partnership; details will come out much later in the planning & design process.

DrDoc is watching the computer stats on the Softbows – 12-0. Where’s the Mercy Rule?

The Titans drafted an interesting safety in the 6th round.

The Titans not only got a safety, they got a Rhodes scholar in the sixth round of the NFL Draft on Saturday when they selected Florida State’s Myron Rolle.

Rolle gave up his senior season of college football to attend Oxford and was one of 32 students in America to be named a Rhodes scholar. It led to some questions about his commitment to football.

“The fact that I have a lot of options, to go to medical school … to enter politics now or keep my foundation going strong, there are so many different avenues I could take right now,’’ Rolle said. “The fact that I choose football, something that academics and people in the education realm can’t really understand, I think shows my testament.

  176. huh? April 24, 2010 10:48 am

    Huh? Bowsballers???

Typically when referring to the different team sports the term “ballers” typifies basketball players.

But its okay to create your own.

Perhaps, BaseBows would be more recognizable.

  177. Garret April 24, 2010 10:49 am

So, Tennessee drafted safeties in the 5th and 6th rounds. Unfortunately for Ryan Mouton, they drafted a CB out of UCLA in the 4th round…and told him that he will have an immediate chance to play. This means that the Titans now have *5* CBs competing for 1 starting spot.

Tennessee traded up because they wanted this specific CB…so, Mouton will have a huge battle during all the camps this summer to hold him off as well as all the other CBs who want to earn a spot.

Verner Told He’ll Have Chance To Start

Verner has joined a group of defensive backs that will compete in training camp for the starting job opposite veteran Cortland Finnegan. The Titans re-signed Rod Hood and added veteran Tye Hill. Last year’s draft selections of Ryan Mouton and Jason McCourty also return.

Titans head coach Jeff Fisher said the team targeted Verner when the team re-grouped after Day 2 of the Draft. Seattle’s willingness to trade down and swap fourth round picks with Tennessee came in exchange for running back LenDale White and defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson.

”Definitely it made me feel pretty good, that they had me at high value and they wanted to get me in case somebody else tried to,” Verner said. I definitely was really happy.”

According to NFL.com, the WAC ended up with 5 drafted players. The NFL like the top-tier of the WAC’s talent but it does not appear that the WAC had much depth in draftable players:

    Round 1:
    Iupati (Idaho)
    Matthews (Fresno State)
    Wilson (BSU)

    Round 3:
    Smith (La Tech)

    Round 6:
    Morris (La Tech)

  188. ai-eee-soos April 24, 2010 10:57 am

NFL draft pau – 255 picks.

weber state WR last pick – WEBER STATE !!!

looks like Warriors go FA; but get to “choose” their team.

  189. Garret April 24, 2010 10:59 am

Someone posted that the MWC did not have any 1st round draft picks, but TCU’s Jerry Hughes was drafted in the first round. NFL.com states that the MWC had 13 drafted players.

  190. Garret April 24, 2010 11:01 am

John Estes really should have been drafted–I don’t understand how so many other centers were drafted instead of him. Even worse, teams that drafted a center are not good options for Estes to sign with as a free agent.

  191. Kazz April 24, 2010 11:03 am

    Here we go again…

Wahine has the BASES loaded with one out.

Rodriguez, J singled up the middle (2-1 BFB).
Aguirre, A. walked (3-1 BBBKB); Rodriguez, J advanced to second.
Aguirre, A. advanced to second; Rodriguez, J advanced to third on a passed ball.
Pu’u-Warren, struck out swinging, reached first on a wild pitch (1-2 KFBS).
    Tauali’i, A. out on batter’s interference (2-0 BB).

    WAHINE 16
    Nevada 0

TOP of the 4th, Wahine with one out.

  192. Kazz April 24, 2010 11:03 am

Grimes, K. flied out to cf, SAC, RBI (2-2 BFKB); Rodriguez, J scored.

    WAHINE 17
    Nevada 0

Top of the 4th with two outs for UH

  193. al April 24, 2010 11:04 am

kazz…laying down a bunt is more insulting. swing away, no stealing, no hit n run, not trying for the extra base, stuff like that shows more baseball/softball etiquette.

if this were international softball there’s a fifteen run mercy rule after four innings.

  194. Garret April 24, 2010 11:04 am

Teams that drafted centers this year:
    Pitt, 1st round
    Denver, 3rd round
    Denver, 6th round–They drafted 2 centers!
    New Orleans, 5th round
    Washington, 7th round

I couldn’t believe that Washington took a center from New Mexico in the 7th round instead of Estes. It would have been nice to have Estes with Colt there.

  197. Garret April 24, 2010 11:07 am

Okay, I’m not as upset with Washington–the player is listed as a center for the draft, but he played all 3 OL positions in college and could end up at G for Washington.

  198. Kazz April 24, 2010 11:08 am

  201. Garret April 24, 2010 11:10 am

    ST posted this yesterday:

If John Estes does not get selected in the draft, look for him to end up as a free agent at San Francisco, Indianapolis, Atlanta or Jacksonville.

The good news is that none of those teams drafted a center.

  202. d1島 April 24, 2010 11:11 am

Hmmm…..gotta work on my timing. 😆

    Naupaulunchauwah…

  203. PowderPuff April 24, 2010 11:12 am

Happy 1st round (MVB) Saturday, Tsaikos. We will ALL (okay, except Stretch) need to be at the top of our “conversationalist’ game tonight to make up for A-joe.

And wow…the softball ladies of Manoa – lighting it up in Reno. Wahooo! No need electricity for the casinos.

  204. Garret April 24, 2010 11:12 am

I’ll stop interrupting the softball updates…

  205. Kazz April 24, 2010 11:13 am

BTW, what did I say about the EXCUSES from the WAC already???

    From WACsoftball’s Twitter site:

“Top 5th: Hawai’i 17, Nevada 0. Ricketts has been perfect thru 4. Nevada still playing this series without its top hitter Noelle Micka.
half a minute ago via web”

Quite pathetic attempt to downgrade the Wahine’s DOMINANCE all WAC season long.. 🙄

  206. Kazz April 24, 2010 11:15 am

I think Majam is gonna be ok.. 😎

Majam, K. singled up the middle (2-1 BFB).
Iwata, J. reached on a fielding error by ss, advanced to second (0-0); Majam, K. advanced to third.
Pagaduan, D. pinch ran for Iwata, J..
Gonzalez, M. homered to left field, 3 RBI (1-0 B); Pagaduan, D. scored, unearned; Majam, K. scored.

    WAHINE 20

  207. al April 24, 2010 11:16 am

    mwahahahaa.

BTW I swear I’m NOT trying to win the blog contest.

    Just saw the post now.

Will stop the softball updates for now until the second game of the DH and the last game of the series…. It’s REALLY pointless, but oh so FUN!!! 😈

  212. Jason April 24, 2010 11:21 am

Indy would be a really good fit for Estes. I could see him succeeding Jeff Saturday.

  213. Kazz April 24, 2010 11:21 am

    Al,

Those Fresno State homers that most likely are running WAC’s softball twitter site cant stand what we’re doing knowing they’re looking at possible “DEATH” next weekend at Manoa.

  214. papajoe2 April 24, 2010 11:21 am

al, that’s what i was thinking. too close to call. hahaha

  215. Kazz April 24, 2010 11:22 am

Man, Coach Coolen ain’t messing around against Nevada, he only subbed Pagaduan for Yoshikawa at 2nd and Yoshikawa for Iwata at SS.

I think more of the other players should at LEAST enjoy this final inning.

Good afternoon Tsaiko Nation, can ANY local Tsaiko give an update to Bryant Moniz situation ? With the young man having a personal leave then being reinstated my fears are this will be another Tyler Graunke situation in which his GREAT play of last year will not have an opportunity to repeat this year.

Frankly, I can’t understand why this situation is even happening as there is more to this story then being told as going with another quaterback who is unproven over a proven and experience KEY player that Moniz represents is mind boggling and dissapointing to say the least.

Watching this walk on “SUPERSTAR” was a refreshing experience last year as he brought toughness with running/throwing capabilities as this season every UH Warrior fan was looking forward to a full season coming from Moniz as his fan base is HUGHE with so many “LOVING” and respecting his tremendous potential !

I hope he will be back “LEADING” the team as it will be a crying shame that he was only just a figmant of my imagination !

  226. Kazz April 24, 2010 11:46 am

The only thing I’ll say about the Moniz thing is that it’s a shame that when certain reporters that know what the deal is decide to spill it to other people when they shouldn’t out of respect for all involved.

NO, I am not talking about Stephen.

  227. Kazz April 24, 2010 11:51 am

I have to laugh whenever I see folks make disparaging remarks about the Wahine being able to hit because of the altitude (thinner air).

Mystically the air must get thicker when the home team comes up to bat but thins out for the Wahine?

The only mystic thing is how little respect continues to be shown.

  251. RainbowCliff April 24, 2010 12:18 pm

Mr. Kazz, I gather from your remarks that “what ever” the story is concerning Moniz certain reports was brought out in which it shouldn’t of out of respect to the young man and coaching staff. From watching videos of him he seems to be humble, surreal and a likeable young man with so much “POTENTIAL” as I find it hard to believe that it is a discipline problem or breaking team rules situation.

A walk on who has a child and moonlights as a delivery pizza guy is a great story of “perserverance that builds character” as Moniz is all of that and so much more with local ties to the Island that definetly had every local Hawaii fan “PROUD” that he is playing as a Warrior and looking forward to his stellar play this season and beyound !

We can only hope he will be back and given every opportunity to lead this football team as frankly with out him starting or playing it is going to be a “TOUGH” dissapointing season with out the “SUPERSTAR” !

Mahalo Mr. Kazz for shedding some light to the situation !

What happen to your top signal caller who is counted on this year to lead this team and now we are possibly face with him not playing at all and going with ‘unproven’ quaterbacks with the likes of USC, Army and Colorado as your first 3 games of the season !

I don’t understand, ESPN comments on Colt McCoy-basically he will succeed, his size doesn’t matter, because he has the intangibles. Hey, they said Colt was too small (light weight) to be an NFL qb, a qb in shotgun formation, but McCoy ran a spread option passing game from under center, he was not a typical drop back passer.

  270. Kazz April 24, 2010 12:41 pm

    Ralph,

McCoy played for Texas and that’s enough for ESPN.

    Follow the ESPN Formulas:

Shotgun spread QB in the WAC = failure

Shotgun spread QB in a BCS school = AWESOME

Shotgun spread option QB in the SEC = God Incarnate and can do no wrong no matter what.

  271. RainbowCliff April 24, 2010 12:42 pm

Mr. Tsai Meister, can you shed ANY light to the Bryant Moniz situation as I found out on this story just last week and living in LA all Hawaii news is late as this is a ‘shocking story’ that has me baffled, confused and disbelief !

You are sir the ‘beat writer’ so what is the beat as scholarship issue, blow up at the coach or daughter illness has been rumored as were we are right now it has been alleged he may or won’t be back playing this season or any other season ?

I hope sir this is not the case !

didn’t know that Hue Jackson is the new Oakland OC, formerly with the Ravens and worked with the qb there.

  277. Ralph April 24, 2010 12:51 pm

OC don’t last too long at Oakland, but is it the OC or the under performance of the qb and the receivers. Heyward-Bey has made zero catches in a few games or definitely 2 or less.

  278. RainbowCliff April 24, 2010 12:52 pm

Mr. bb I have read the message boards as the information I am sharing has been said and the situation is he is not playing and there is a problem. Being positive is one thing but reality is another !

  290. Kazz April 24, 2010 1:05 pm

    Wafan,

Pu’u-Warren’s left thigh is probably “worn in” to the point that one can fashion a decent Samurai katana off of it.

  295. Garret April 24, 2010 1:10 pm

    Ralph,

I have serious doubts as to whether or not Colt McCoy will make it in the NFL, but he had several advantages that Colt Brennan did not have:

    1. McCoy weighed more than Brennan even before Brennan lost something like 20 pounds due to illness before the first time the NFL weighed him after his senior season. Once the “too small” label is stuck on a player, the scouts have a hard time forgetting about it. Brennan lost weight all through the 2007 season due to the demands of the media (he was interviewed so long that at times he missed entire training table meals) and fans (who bothered him everywhere-classes, home, etc.). Getting sick made him weigh in something like 30+ pounds less than McCoy’s first weigh in with NFL scouts.

No matter what UH fans like us may think, it is a FACT that Brennan’s weight hurt him in the draft. The “too small” criticisms came *after* he had that shocking weigh in…and the fact was that at that point he *was* too small! Even Brennan’s most loyal boosters here admitted that at the time.

    2. Bess, RGM, and Rivers all couldn’t run when Brennan threw during UH’s Pro Day…it was hard to make a good impression then and show that the weight he had gained since the combine (he was still too light when he went to the combine) did not affect his throwing. McCoy had healthy receivers to throw to and made a good impression at his pro day.

It did NOT help Colt when his receivers were injured during Pro Day. If they all were healthy, I believe that their chemistry with Colt would have resulted in an awesome exhibition which would have impressed the scouts. That would have helped Colt, Bess, RGM, and possibly Rivers (though the NFL was focused on his injuries and might have stayed away anyway).

    3. McCoy played against better competition, with faster closing speed for the DBs and faster pass rushers. McCoy faced pass rushes similar to what Brennan faced with Georgia–the film of the last Oklahoma game will show that Oklahoma’s pass rush dominated Texas’ OL and their DBs covered the WRs well…so, McCoy threw a lot of balls away or to his safety valves. The film of the Sugar Bowl does not show Brennan doing that.

I’m guessing that many people will be upset with this post…but I hate for people to think that everything is a conspiracy against Hawaii without looking at some things that explain part of the problem.

  296. Garret April 24, 2010 1:11 pm

Congratulations to John Estes, Brashton Satele, and Ray Hisatake! I hope that they are able to earn their spots on their teams just like Bess did.

The two posters (or one poster with two names) are not regulars here. Believe what you want, but rumors are exactly what the label says. I would wait until someone is able to list a credible source that can be validated. Until then, its just chasing shadows. Not too long ago, people were posting with all certainty that a certain head football coach had a baby with a star VB player. Many people were believing it…all too funny…people, that is.

    BG

  312. RainbowCliff April 24, 2010 1:41 pm

Garret, I am not upset at all as I thank you for your detail and inside info on the two Colts !

Mr. Brennan has a LARGE following on this blog but the fact remains he has not played a full season with issues and injuries being the source of his problems.

With Campbell being traded it is hopefull that Colt gets a chance BUT with McNabb certain to be the starting quaterback then his window of opportunity gets smaller with every snap that Donovan takes.

One thing for sure we all will be watching Redskins football very closely this NFL season !

  313. haka April 24, 2010 1:42 pm

    Kazz,
You’re almost as good as Les Keiter…we gotta get you the sound props.

  314. RainbowCliff April 24, 2010 2:05 pm

BG Sir ! Mahalo for clearing the last two posters statements as I was ‘FLOORED’ to hear what they have said as judging from videos that I have seen on Moniz he shows a quiet and decent personality.

I am aware of your last statement on certain coach and vb player as I thought we were way passed that kind of rumor BUT what was just posted from ‘da rumor’ and ‘anon’ I became shocked on their ill explanation to Moniz.

I hope his situation can be resolved and see #17 back on the field as for darumor and anon shame on you for misleading me and spreading terrible remarks on Mr. Bryant Moniz.

You two better watch out as a lawsuit can come your way charging you with “defamation of character” !

  315. Pomai April 24, 2010 2:37 pm

AW crap, I get chance for go, but have made other plans(family dinner). ST can you give them to someone who can go? Thanks wafan.

Re-This coach should play a different tune

Somewhere in America there was a college football head coach that made these lofty predictions about his players having long NFL careers, being first day picks and making them out to be great, great players. That was the tune he played-before last season, during the season and maybe up to two years ago.

The season before, same thing, especially in how he elevated his two linebackers as can’t miss guys.

    They all missed, seemingly.

They all missed the boat, probably, or the taste of first day money. Now, regretfully, some of the players the head coach said as being the best he’s been around are resigned to try out money and long shots at making a team.

The boat the head coaches players missed, carried all the other collegiate players that made into the NFL, probably, more so, because their head coaches played a different tune. A tune that wasn’t exalting. A tune, instead, that would light a fire under them so they’d strive towards getting better. And better prepared, better hungered and better determined. A tune that would keep them grounded and small headed, and not one that decorated them with platitudes and lofty predictions.

The tail of the two types of coaches on this post NFL draft day.

One is wagging his tail, happily, for basically having the wherewithal of knowing how to get the best out of his players . The other one has his head in his tail because the tune he played got the worst out of his players.

When this head coaches assistant appeared on a talk radio show recently. He was given the question of what he thought of his junior college transfer, whom was an offensive tackle now moving over to the guard position, never had a taste of D-1 ball, and was asked his thoughts of this player being touted a NFL prospect. After a long pause, he answered, yet dodged the questions “all my offensive linemen have NFL size, scouts will be looking at their body of work and taking notes of their play.” Great answer by this coach. Inspire the players on.Light the fire. Not dwarf them with decorations.

In his quiet moment this head coach with his head in his tail, somewhere in America, should reflect on this. And change his tune.

  362. Matt April 24, 2010 10:07 pm

Their team name is WARRIORS, same as the FB team. There is no “Rainbow” in their name. Yet, the entire match people were shouting, “Let’s Go Bows” and people here keep calling them the Bows. UH needs to standardize the team names so people stop getting confused.

  363. Kekoa (iPhone) April 24, 2010 10:07 pm

Congrats to all the UH teams today!

    It was awesome tonight – the Stan was a-rockin’ & a-rolling’ !!

And guess what! No one in our area left early to avoid a possible traffic jam! First time I’ve seen that happen in kazillion seasons no matter what sport.

Although several UH coaches and teams were there tonight, one was not -Dave Shoji. Given his kids’ affiliation with Stanford, for whom will he be cheering this Thursday?

Again, congratulations to the SoftBows, the BaseBows and the WaBows. Jees Luise – if a team can be proud of being called The Dirtbags or The Beavers or The Hokies, then what’s wrong with Rainbow Warriors? I know, I know – too fa^^otty for manly men, but that didn’t stop the original Warriors.

    Capitol -ist/WassupDoc,

For me personally, it has nothing to do with being a “manly man”. I never said that I had a problem with the name Rainbow Warriors and I certainly never used the offensive term that you did. I still cheer for the Rainbow Baseball and Rainbow Warrior Basketball teams. The MVB team chose to be called Warriors, just like the Football team did. The name Warriors is what is published in their Media Guide. Out of respect for their choice, I believe they should be called by that name.

My other point is that from a marketing standpoint, you have to come up with a consistent nickname for your teams. If ardent fans are confused on the name(s) of your teams, you have big problems. You can expect that non-local announcers and media entities will consistently call them by the wrong name as well. It happens all of the time. If we really want to spread the reach of our “brand”, we can ill afford to go around confusing everyone.

Nevertheless, great wins for all of the UH teams today. If I didn’t have friends coming into town on Thursday, I would think long and hard about making the trip to Palo Alto.

With three OL and 2 receivers, the draft looked favorable for Colt. Now Donovan McNabb will break in the new OL (read “cannon fodder”) while Colt gets ready to take the reins – hopefully.

Tonight was a GREAT example of a team being defined by its roots and what they represent.

Warriors on paper but the crowd both young and old screamed “LET’S GO BOWS”!!!! SAME TEAM SO WHO CARES?????

Gonna take me a while to recover from this AWESOME VOLLEYBALL BATTLE!!!!!!

The SSC was rockin and my mom had the time of her life!!!

    Замечательно, это весьма ценное мнение…

    • Former UH linebacker Brashton Satele will sign with the Oakland Raiders. He said he is waiting for a copy of the offer to be e-mailed or faxed…..

Excellent read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch because I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!
