FINAL: No. 2 BYU pulled off a stunner over No. 1 Hawaii on Thursday night, sweeping the Rainbow Warriors 25-15, 25-17, 25-20 and setting a UH opponent record for hitting percentage. The teams will rematch on Friday night in front of what is close to a sellout crowd.

Maybe baseball is on 1500. UH probably have too many sports and not enough radio station. Basketball, volleyball and baseball all have radio contracts and if all is played at the same time, somebody have to give. I guess the radio station rather have the complete basketball and baseball game and volleyball is going to have to be “joined in progress”.

Yikes that was ugly volleyball by the #1 team in the country, really disappointed in every aspect of this match… BYU has been playing at a higher level and I felt they were the true number 1 team coming into tonight’s match.. I was hoping Hawaii would rise up to the occasion and use the home court advantage to prevail. Nope not even close!
I hope this serves as a wake up call with the kind of beating Hawaii took tonight. And play with confidence! Know that you’re the number one team in the country for a reason and carry it on to the court. And don’t let anyone take that from you guys. This is your guys year to be the best and finish on top. Don’t let anyone stand in the way of that. Take what’s yours and play like the champions you folks are meant to be! No regrets, no questions just pure confidence of knowing that anything could happen on any night, like tonight, but in the end you’re gonna fight even harder for what you know is yours. Use this setback as a reality check to bounce back and take care of business like you know you folks can!
4. nope, not even close. They never recovered from Garcia Fernandez early serving run that made it 6-1 in Set 1. Seemed that everyone had an off night. Cowell said he had a bit of food poisoning.
This one is on the schedule maker. Hawaii palyed nobody for 2 months. They looked shell shocked tonight. Thankfully they have a month to sharpen up with the Big West schedule.
5 sorry to burst your bubble but Hawaii right now is the fourth best team in the country behind BYU, UCSB and LBSU. I hate to sound negative but Hawaii is just not as good as we had thought they would be, a lot of us really felt our setting and passing would’ve been better than it has been to date. Fingers crossed that BYU will come back down to earth and we will be competitive tomorrow night!
Beat BYU was all over social media, looks like the players were to concerned with the hype and forgot about the actual match!
Disappointed with Coach. The setter struggled all evening and was not effective with his block. Why no substitutions?

Based on the quality of play, there was really nothing to lose by letting other players give it a shot. Baffling.
Thelle was the starting setter during the fall swing to So Cal where UH went something like 7-1 beating LB, UCSB, Irvine, etc….
Did Charlie Wade forget what Thelle can do? This one is much on the coach as it’s on the players. Players looked ill prepared and coaches didn’t help by not trying a new setter….who was the starter at the beginning of the year.
Charlie Wade is famous for saying, “It aint depth unless we use it,” after he empties the bench against Southeastern McKendree Tech A&M. When it comes time to making mid-game adjustments, NADA. I thought Dimi could’ve gone in for Rado at some point in Set 2. Thelle could’ve been used earlier as well.
We were definitely out-coached, out-prepared, out-everything. BYU has been improving every with each match. Hard for UH with a wonky schedule like they have had. Hoping for a respectable showing tonight.
the type of setting is one of their problems, they have to go back to the quick set; the buy blocks who are good and big were just camping while the hitter was getting to hit the high set. byu uses the quick set and they were very successful. their pass-receive broke down badly, so man aces. hope they do better tonight but don’t believe the can win even if they solve the pass-receive problem. need to change to the quick set, long beach was so successful and they won national championships. Hawaii used it with worsely and were very successful. why can’t wade see that?
Hawaii had played the last couple of seasons with a chip on their shoulders. 2018 snubbed by the committee and went with UCI instead to go to the big dance, 2019 it was against LBS. For this year, what’s in it for the boys? I sure hope it’s winning it all at the end. Last night’s play did nit show that, but I sure hope they realize quickly before it’s too late. Last night was an utter embarrassment and I feel for the boys. You can see in their eyes the desperation and I put that game on the coaches. No support there at all.
One thing I noticed is that UH’s hitting % improved thru the match while BYU’s went down. UH actually hit better than BYU in the 3rd set, but serving made the difference (UH -6, BYU -1).

It really felt like UH had a bit of momentum at the very end, especially with the couple extra points after the match point review. If UH can pass better tonight, I think the result will be different. BYU is VERY good.

Can’t take nothing away from BYU
Looked like an Olympic National Team vs a college team. Just outplayed and outcoached in every area! Gabi Garcia Fernandez phenomenal service was a sight to behold! He is the best player in the country hands down although BYU has great overall balance. I hope our team will put up a better effort but in all honesty. BYU seems untouchable! Hope I am wrong?
Wake-up call. Let’s see what coach Wade does. Win tonight and it will quiet all the negatives.

you get who you can get, who you can afford to bring out and who will come out. 2 teams pulled out of their contracts with UH (think it was pepperdine & USC)
Hawaii had to work around M&W basketball.
9. not sure if it was the players doing all the social media or the athletic department. The latter wanted to hype the game.
10. Sheward struggled because the passing was horrid. Don’t think subbing him out would have changed things. They can’t run the offense if they can’t pass. And they couldn’t. BYU served really really well.
15. what’s in it for this group? they finished second last year and want to win it all this time.

Agree with all that UH looked shell-shocked. IMHO they have been able to rally when they were down this season. And they couldn’t last night, which played a bit into the psyche.
They have survived 1 or 2 players having an off night. Seemed everyone did.
