Congratulations to Alfred “Alfee” Reft, who was announced as the new associate head coach at San Diego today. He replaces Brent Hilliard who took the head coaching job at San Diego State. Hilliard replaces former Wahine All-American Deitre Collins whose contract was not renewed after last season.

Reft was an All-America libero at Hawaii (2004-06), first team in 2005 and second team in 2006. Reft was the Asics/Volleyball Magazine Defensive Player of the Year in 2005 after totaling 272 digs and setting a new UH single-season record with 2.67 digs per set. Reft transferred to Hawaii in 2004 from UC Santa Barbara and became the starting libero for the Warriors. As a sophomore he set the school-record for digs in the rally-scoring era for with 238.

It’ll be nice for Alfred to be back on the west coast after being in the mid west(?) for even two seasons. He was a part of a great thing out in Illinois with what seemed to be like an extremely cohesive coaching staff. USD made an excellent hire here. Hilliard is a great coach, but Alfred’s calm demeanor and attention to detail in the ball control department help keep USD at the top of the WCC and reach higher levels on the national stage. Barring any any injuries, I know it’s so early, but I anticipate them getting one of the 16 seeds this coming NCAA tournament!

On another note, these two week breaks in UH’s schedule this year and last bore the heck out of me. At least there is UCLA (Matautia) and BYU (Stanley-2x, Akana, Naone) tonight.

Congrats Alfee. There is a Hawaiian Plate Lunch eatery down the street from campus called Da Kine’s (of course) I’ll make sure Uncle Nelson puts your picture on the wall, next to your old teammate Kimo Tuyay. We’ve watched several USD matches and are a big fans of Coach Jen Petrie.
    Good Luck. Bookumdanoaloha
