Pa‘aluhi to UH?

David Pa‘aluhi, who started at middle linebacker for Oregon State last year, is seeking to join the Warriors.

Pa‘aluhi, of Waianae, was OSU’s second-leading tackler (77) last season. It was announced in February he was leaving OSU to pursue a career in the military. Because he secured a scholarship release, he is free to to sign with another NCAA team. Pa‘aluhi has contacted UH.

Pa‘aluhi would have two years to play one season. But he is seeking a hardship exemption that would give him a second season.

Pa‘aluhi also is a skilled MMA competitor.

Talks are underway for basketball guard Leroy Lutu to work out with the Warrior football team. He might try out as early as tomorrow.

Kahuku defensive back Tigi Hill and linebacker Ben Mamea have been offered UH scholarships.

Here’s Hill’s highlight video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7Q0LIR-pwc

In addition to the Oakland Raiders, Brashton Satele has received inquiries from the Cleveland Browns.

Davone Bess told the Warrior Beat  he will miss Ted Ginn, a close friend who was traded to the San Francisco 49ers. The transaction does not provide security for Bess — or any other Dolphin receiver.

“At this level, nothing is guaranteed,” said Bess, who led the Dolphins in receiving in 2009. “You have to keep working hard.”

Bess, who was a restricted free agent after the 2009 season, re-signed with the Dolphins.

    Would Pa’aluhi be middle linebacker?

    Good to have him aboard!

  7. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 8:05 am

He’s an MMA fighter. He can be anything he wants to be.

  8. Slugger April 18, 2010 8:07 am

Hiya, guys! or should I say, gangeez?

Lucky for Pa’aluhi that he got a release. Hope he can play at UH next season. Is he academically eligible?

  9. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 8:09 am

I believe he is academically eligible.

  14. Justin April 18, 2010 8:18 am

I believe, but i may be wrong, that Lutu was a solid DB in high school in the Washington area.

  15. djmitcho April 18, 2010 8:21 am

Good Morning everybody! I hope everyone has a great sunday. It’s beautiful here in Spokane today. Excited to be able to cook on a grill today. Hopefully Pa’aluhi can fill that middle spot.

  25. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 8:33 am

He would have to sit out a year, I believe, unless he actually did enlist in the military. Then, I believe, there is a possibility he might be able to play right away.

  26. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 8:35 am

Wow, I had a lot of news today. See what happens when I actually show up at practice on time? There’s more schmooze time. (OK, I used “I” way too many times in this post.)

  31. Slugger April 18, 2010 8:41 am

Lutu would give us more height at the defensive back position. Is he on scholarship for basketball?

  32. Momona April 18, 2010 8:42 am

It will be interesting to see how the team reacts to Moniz’s return. Chemistry both on and off the field is absolutely critical to a team’s success.

  33. Momona April 18, 2010 8:43 am

DPK – Michael Memea from Campbell is the LL hero. Not sure if there’s any relation to Ben.

  34. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 8:45 am

    Slugger:
He’s not on basketball scholarship, and there are no immediate plans for him to receive one. He probably has a better chance of getting one for football.

  35. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 8:46 am

Now if Lutu can stick in football, should we start talking about a trade the other way for Miah Ostrowski.

  36. Da Punchbowl Kid April 18, 2010 8:46 am

Yes indeedy, Tsai-rah, the early bird gets that worm! While I was accidently looking over the “Brand X” sports pages, they made no mention of Moniz’s return. Tsai Tscoops again! 😆

Judging from your article, is it safe to assume that Moniz will be back sooner than later?

The upside is that the other QBs, Austin and Graves seem to have gotten some quality reps in the interim. It’ll be very interesting to see how the QB competiton shakes out with Moniz back in the mix.

  44. βρεω808 April 18, 2010 8:57 am

  45. Da Punchbowl Kid April 18, 2010 8:58 am

Well if I didn’t read about it while accidently looking at Brand X’s sports, then it will have to qualify as a “half scoop” at least.

Sorta like my servings of rice these days.

  46. protector April 18, 2010 8:58 am

Woo Hoo! It’s nice to wake up to hear good news for a change! Yesterday morning’s news about the VolleyBows, BaseBows going down along with Brashton’s departuresucked big time. At least the practice T-gate was fun along with football practice & the SoftBow sweep, not to mention things coming together for the VolleyBows!

Hope Paaluhi can play sooner rather than later & hope Lutu can make the team.

  47. βρεω808 April 18, 2010 8:58 am

  48. BleedGreen808 April 18, 2010 9:00 am

  52. bluefintuna April 18, 2010 9:05 am

Is this another of Coach Heffernan’s ideas?

So many things I’ve been reading regarding spring practices this year, notably the changes, have been attributed to Coach Heffernan. Personally I see that his changes are for the better and evokes a better attitude from the players.

Perhaps this is another one? This morning I read in the other paper a quote from Huen, explaining how if a player loafs in practice their names are displayed on a board. Huen goes on to say that none of the players want to be on the board. Or signaled out.

This is a far cry from how they did it when the other strength and conditioning coach was here, where you’d see a few players, like loafing (and almost walking) on short sprints. And never admonished.

This is great. Lighting a fire under the players yield results. It’s motivational.

Tomorrow’s 430 in the afternoon practice time, who gets credit for this?
Another good move, having practices corresponding to game times. Wow.

Another observation I see is that the team is doing more sparring than shadow boxing (in other words more scrimmaging, 7 on 7, 11 on 11 this spring) , simulating more game like situations, like the offense going against the defense in the red zone, hurry up offense, overtime plays, 3 and 10 plays and plays designed at looking at clock management.

This is great, too. Simulate. Simulate. Simulate. Both the players and the coaches, calling the plays, are all practicing managing the clock, making the right calls, and reads, and working on their playbook. Wow.

What you can see is that team, and the coaches, are working on their weak spots, too. This is good. Plus it falls in line, too, of what the coach said in his pre-spring practices Call The Coach Show in how he said, “that this year the team needs to practice more physical.”

Last night watching a few of the highlight of the scrimmage from KHON the first thing that ran through my mind were how good the two preceding centers were for UH, especially in how they would snap the ball in the shotgun with velocity and always on target to the QB. I think Timmy, Colt, Greg and Bryan (last season) were fortunate. With a new center, it’s too early to tell, so we’ll see.

Junior Day, I hope that was a success. In an article quoting Coach Lumpkin last week he identified how the program, himself, all the coaches, have to develop a rapport with the recruits and stay after them. He basically admitted that he has to show a little extra love to them. Wow. Sounds good. Sounds like the plan. I like what I’m seeing.

    Hit one here, Majam.

April 30 will be another busy evening – softball at 6, baseball at 6:35 and Warrior Bowl at 7pm We’ll start with Na Wahine for an hour – turning on the radio at 6:35 pm to listen to the Basebows – walk over Ching Field to watch the WB for an hour & then head on inside The Les to watch the last three or four innings.

  58. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc April 18, 2010 9:36 am

Stephen: Any updates on what’s going to happen tomorrow? Last Monday, one of your Honolulu Advertiser colleagues said that he’d heard that no one will actually be cleaning out his/her desk tomorrow but that everyone will get some sort of written notice.

Hopefully one of the changes will be utilizing The Other Downtown Daily’s electronic story index on each page instead of being forced to click, click, click

Furthernore, I’d actually pay for a subscription that did not have moving, flying, flashing ads – especially ones that fly in & cover up stories and cannot be clicked away.

Have to go to work – yuckkk! but it’s that time of the year.

WassupDoc, no need go over to ching field, can watch both from the bleachers. Actually I think if I have to make a choice it will be the Na Wahine, it is a very important series for them, there’s no reason they can’t end up 20-0 in the WAC at the end of the season and 40-11 overall going into the Championship Tournament. Can we say National Champs.

  63. BleedGreen808 April 18, 2010 10:12 am

    Thanks sjmarco!

On the way to practice after the practice tailgate, I thought about the question I asked you and I started to think about intermediate when my friends and I would catch the bus to go swimming in back of the waiau powerplant. The plant has a stream that runs next to it. Thank goodness I came out ok. Ahhhh, the things you do when your young and carefree.

    sj ~ Those weren’t rumors!

Pops and I pulled out some u-n-b-e-l-i-e-v-a-b-l-y large Samoan crabs in the late fifties from out of the West Lock area of Pearl. Thank god and Greyhound we had the wire cage traps to keep them in.

Once we got ’em home and out of the traps…it was fun for all us kids to tease them with broom and mop handle sticks. After they snapped them like match sticks, our moms wanted to snap us with the leffovah sticks!

😎 Hit one here, Majam. 😎

For awhile last night, it seemed like Home Run Derbybetween the 2 teams.

NSF, Me, Pops and Mrs. NSF had a great time giving our vocal opinion of the balls and strikes calls.

  73. Kazz (blkberry_storm) April 18, 2010 11:11 am

Its ironic that the winner of the contest won’t be able to see Majam hit anything as they’re looking for tickets to an event across the street.

I agree with Pomai and was already settled on softball for both days not to mention Saturday’s regular season finale is also senior night.

  74. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 11:15 am

Actually, tomorrow’s late practice has something to do with activities during the day than actually trying to correlate to game times.

  75. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 11:18 am

    Re: hustle.
I think a lot of these things have to do with Mack being free to roam instead of coordinating the defense. Now he lets Aranda and Rolovich do all of the detailed stuff; he gets to oversee more things. But Mack has always been a stickler for practice behavior. One of his pet peeves is players crowing the sideline during scrimmages. He wants them behind the yellow line. That’s important, because a team actually can get penalized for that during a game.

  76. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 11:20 am

    Tomorrow at Advertiser:
Actually, we’ve been extended, I think, to at least next week.
If everything goes according to schedule, the sale of The Advertiser will go through April 25. The next day, a company called HA takes over The Advertiser. That company will run the paper until either somebody buys the Star Bulletin or there’s a merger of the two papers. The transition could be a month, could be longer.

  77. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 11:22 am

    Kazz:
I did a criss-cross promotion for the tickets.
Might be silly, but I don’t want to jinx the baseball team.
So, any requests for Tuesday’s show? We already had Majam. Should we have Iwata? David Graves? Brashton Satele?

  78. A-House April 18, 2010 11:22 am

    Hello, BleedGreen808:

Great to meet another faithful Warrior fan and welcome to the Tsaiko Ohana – after all, we are an “ohana” too!!!

ST: will you be naming the other “Jr”s who were offered scholarships? Any from the “outside” islands?

Wahine BB fans – anyone know if Coach Dana has an eye on “outside” island basketball players? appears to have a few from Maui and Big Island.

And, speaking of Hilo, hello to Bighilofan2 – how U braddah? Keeping a low profile until August?

  79. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 11:24 am

Speaking of transfers, Cal State Northridge doesn’t have a women’s basketball coach. Think any of the Hawaii players would want to come back?

  80. SteveM April 18, 2010 11:29 am

    Good morning everyone!

Glad to see those who could attend the practice tailgate yesterday. I was finally able to get a real close look at the location (patio #5). Large and no hill to climb to get to the stadium. The sun shading over the concrete slab with the picnic tables may not be totally waterproof but the usual canopies could still be used in case of rain…and no mud. Found the spot where the karaoke equipment could be set up with sj-macro’s electrical expertise. 😆

Mahalo to NorthShoreFan and Sun for grilling the pork and other meats. He brought his own 30-gal drum grill for some serious cooking. I saw a propane tank on the ground but didn’t think it remarkable until Ralph pointed out that it was attached to flame thrower. Wow…real serious grill master! 😯

Mahalo to BG who obtained the site for us yesterday and to SailorBlue who is reserving the site whenever available on game dates.

Future mahalos to Pomai, who was elected the new “Keeper of the Tailgate Supplies” (picnic plates, bowls, utensils, napkins, foil, etc,).

  81. koakane April 18, 2010 11:35 am

    good mid day to all

congrats again to the wahine sball team on their sweep yesterday. hope pomai prediction comes true for them.

wishing the best for the warrior men bball team. fix it, do whatever changes is need and win the game.

mho warrior fball offensive team needs work

  82. Kekoa April 18, 2010 11:39 am

BleedsGreen808 ~ Never went in for the Oysters. We had too many fish & crab traps to check. Most of the fish traps & nets we had were just outside the mouth of the Harbor. Only crab traps inside Pearl.

  83. Kekoa April 18, 2010 11:43 am

Made a huge prediction during the last at bat for the Wahine. I told M/M NSF that the girls would score 7 runs, and that would end the game. Sure enuff, they did it!…Routine. 😎

  84. SteveM April 18, 2010 11:59 am

Kekoa — my dad told me that in the 1930’s he used to go crabbing in Pearl Harbor too. Made a canoe out of old galvanized sheet roofing. Low profile boat difficult to spot at night. His last canoe sunk off Honolulu Pier 2 while coming back from akule fishing for grandma’s lunch wagon.

Hmmm…and people wonder why I became a coastie and why I was fisherman who doesn’t eat fish. 😆

  85. Old School Dave April 18, 2010 12:06 pm

Leroy Lutu, if he’s anything like his dad, would probably make a good outside linebacker or safety (if he has the coverage speed). Too bad UH doesn’t have a tight end in their offense.

David Paaluhi would be a great addition to the Warriors. Very talented and active linebacker who started in the Pac-10 as a sophomore. The only question would be was his release from OSU granted under false pretenses of leaving school to join the military? Unless he failed his physical and was rejected for military service, there could be some problems. When I heard the story of Paaluhi leaving the comforts of college to join up and serve his country, I thought it was very admirable. Anyway, I really don’t know the story and hope there are no problems with his transferring and playing for UH.

I did a criss-cross promotion for the tickets.
Might be silly, but I don’t want to jinx the baseball team.
So, any requests for Tuesday’s show? We already had Majam. Should we have Iwata? David Graves? Brashton Satele?

Oooohh…. Tough one. I need to delegate within myself. Of course if I was selfish, I’d request Iwata. First Wahine to win Louisville Slugger National Honor, but then in fairness, the Wahine softball team is getting a decent amount of press and Iwata was featured on KHON I think.

For Brashton, I believe the questions would be a bunch of “what ifs and what happened?” that serve no purpose to Brashton after the fact.

So in fairness, gotta go with David Graves, who is making some noise in the QB race. I know Pomai and Curveball would enjoy that!!!

  87. Ralph April 18, 2010 12:19 pm

ST how about Katie Grimes as guest, she really controls the pitchers and has done a great job behind the plate for 4 years, starting nearly every game without taking a break and she’s a senior. One more home series and she is done.

  88. Kazz April 18, 2010 12:26 pm

While Majam has hit about 8 balls over the outfield net and into the adjacent tennis court, I do believe Melissa Gonzales has hit the FARTHEST home run at the RWSS this season.

Her second homer last night over left field sailed over the netting and beyond the two batting cages. My guess is that was about 240 feet.

Majam’s tennis court assaults, while impressive and more frequent was in the 220-230 feet range.

Yeah I’m nit-picking, but Gonzalez deserves her fair share of the “Holy crap!!! Did you see that?”-type talk too. 😉

  89. Kazz April 18, 2010 12:29 pm

    Ralph,

    Dey you go!!!

Man, we’ve really taken Grimes for granted, I mean the girl is IRONWOMAN.

As with the concern replacing Warwick last season at 3rd this year, all concerned eyes will be on Grimes’ successor next season.

All signs point to Kauai native Jocelyn Enrique, but I have no clue how she fairs at the plate.

  90. d1島 April 18, 2010 12:33 pm

    BaseBows 🙁

  91. Kazz April 18, 2010 12:36 pm

AH! That other girl for Georgia Tech just tied Majam for the national lead in HRs at 24.

  92. oldie April 18, 2010 12:42 pm

I second the motion for David Graves.

Watching Blue Hawaii on TCM. Brings back memories…

  93. Ralph April 18, 2010 12:56 pm

in SB Arizona sweeps Stanford, Cal sweeps Arizona St, UDUB take 2-1 over Oregon.
UH lost to Arizona, split with Stanford, lost 2 of 3 with Cal, lost 2 to UDUB. UH is in good company, continue playing at a high level, don’t play to the level of the rest of the WAC, and if they do that they will be ready and competitive for regional. Same issue as Na Wahine in vb, keep the focus and practice hard, can’t do anything about the WAC schedule.

  94. Ralph April 18, 2010 12:58 pm

UH also lost to Oregon in SB. I think the Pac 10 won 20 of 27 world series titles, so if we play the best, we become better and hopefully we win our share.

  95. Kekoa April 18, 2010 1:02 pm

SteveM ~ Back in the day, the Pearl Patrol boats caused much concern on our night time forays. Our 16 ft. Cat designed double hull was built very low to the water and painted all black.

  96. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 1:33 pm

Did you see that Boise is putting in a new blue turf. The glare from the current one, apparently, was hurting people’s eyes.
So here’s my thing: The NCAA grandfathered the rule allowing Boise to have blue turf. Now, if it changes the turf, shouldn’t the rule expire? I mean, the rule was in place because it would be too expensive to change the turf based on the color. But now Boise can easily order green turf.
    Thoughts?

  97. Kekoa April 18, 2010 1:42 pm

I’d love to accidently spill about 25 gallons of Green & Black enamel paint right smack dab in the middle of the field the night before our next game with them.

  98. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 1:47 pm

Know what’s annoying about Boise fans?
    They’re really, really nice.
They’re just really friendly. And they all wear their blue and orange shirts all over town. You see more blue and orange in Boise than black and green in Hawaii.

  99. Kazz April 18, 2010 1:53 pm

    ST,

I think you’re a bit incorrect. There are plenty of green and black shirts in Hawaii.

    Green: Heineken mock shirts.

    Black: Ugly MMA shirts.

  100. Kazz April 18, 2010 1:54 pm

    100.

    100 plus homers for Wahine Softballers… 😎

  101. Kekoa (iPhone) April 18, 2010 1:54 pm

Hideous color combo. Hello Halloween colors.

  102. Kazz April 18, 2010 1:57 pm

But yes, BSU fans are decent people.

I’ve never had a issue respecting what BSU football does and their visiting fans have all been respectful for the most part.

  103. Kazz April 18, 2010 1:59 pm

To date, Wahine Softball is 36-11 overall, 14-0 in WAC, and carries and RPI of 14.

I wonder what poll will want to drop us out of the Top 25 this week??? 🙄

  104. RedZone April 18, 2010 2:03 pm

i was hoping that lutu would try out for football.

    Mahalo, Ke Akua!

  111. oldie April 18, 2010 2:24 pm

Although players won’t admit it, its gotta be somewhat disorienting to play on that blue stuff. Unless you practice on it all the time.

I agree the NCAA should force them to put down a green field. But do they have the guts to do that?

  112. d1島 April 18, 2010 2:26 pm

    Yay! Lilu’s brother!

  113. vballfan1 April 18, 2010 2:26 pm

  115. wafan April 18, 2010 2:29 pm

Happy birthday to another fine Aries — Lilu’s little brother!

How is Mom and Tutu holding up?

  116. NYUH April 18, 2010 2:34 pm

Rolo would be a good guest. It would be interesting to get his take on the emerging QBs.

  117. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 2:46 pm

Rolo would be a good guest, but he’s somewhat reluctant.
And Aranda doesn’t like the cameras. He’ll do print interviews, though.

  118. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 2:48 pm

When spring training is done, we can have a round-table. I’ll bring in Aranda, and we can open it up to a few readers.

  119. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 2:49 pm

I texted Riley, asking him what the Cardinal score was.
    Touchy, touchy.

  120. Mike April 18, 2010 2:54 pm

Blue and orange is hideous when it’s emblazoned with “Boise St.” It’s beautiful on anything that says “NY Mets.”

  121. βρεω808 April 18, 2010 2:55 pm

    Kaia Parnaby & Stephanie Ricketts…. 😀

Let’s get their perspective playing in the middle of the Pacific and blending w/ all the local WSB teammates. 🙂

    Besides – I love Aussie accents! 🙄

    Gryphon Merlyn are interesting names.

    Are they family names?

  126. d1島 April 18, 2010 3:03 pm

And they all wear their blue and orange shirts all over town. You see more blue and orange in Boise than black and green in Hawaii.

Not to mention the B$-You store in the airport on the arrival concourse….just to irritate incoming visiting fans!

  127. d1島 April 18, 2010 3:04 pm

    wafan,

If those are family names… 😯

  128. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 3:04 pm

    OK, I corrected the spellings.

  129. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 3:08 pm

SteveM noticed that I use sighdude@gmail.com as my contact e-mail now.
That’s because of the uncertainty of the honouluadvertiser.com address and because my hawaii.edu address is expiring this summer. Actually, that can go on, but it would be a headache.
People also are free to call me, at any time, at (808) 256-0223. That’s my personal cell, but I’ve got unlimited texts and minutes.

  130. Annoddah Dave April 18, 2010 3:08 pm

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

LLjr did not get much playing time under the Nash system. Looks like he won’t get any under the Arnold system. Why not try for football, I think that is a good move. At least he will be taller than most of the DBs we have had in the past.

The NCAA will do nothing about Boise’s field since they are the darlings of the conference. They only stick it to Hawaii because we can’t drive to their offices and hang them in effigy.

  131. d1島 April 18, 2010 3:10 pm

    Wow!

    Big kid.

  132. wafan April 18, 2010 3:11 pm

    d1 . .

    Can never tell, right?

But, they are strong names. Gryphon is a variation of Griffin, and Merlyn a variation of Merlin. So a strong magical beast? Hmmmmmm.

  133. Annoddah Dave April 18, 2010 3:14 pm

    wafan #132,

Maybe Merlyn is a variation of Mervin like in Wheel of Fortune???!

  134. chopsueyboy April 18, 2010 3:15 pm

    ST
I agree, Boise State should get back to green like the rest of the world if they choose to replace their blue field turf.

How is it that Eastern Washington is planning to install a red turf?
    http://backporch.fanhouse.com/2010/01/28/eastern-washington-raising-money-for-red-turf-on-football-field/

  135. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 3:15 pm

I suppose if you can’t change the field, maybe they can force Boise to wear orange jerseys.

  136. curveball April 18, 2010 3:16 pm

sounds like an offensive lineman to me………….Congrats

  137. Pauoa Boy April 18, 2010 3:18 pm

Boise State’s Smurf Turf is ugly. I think it gives them some kind of mystic magic to win games cause they have a really good home record and mistake me if I’m wrong but has any WAC opponent beat them on that turf yet?

  138. wafan April 18, 2010 3:18 pm

I think Tutu Liz forgot something.

Gryphon in his very first outfit. A Warrior-green jersey!

Now that would have made an awesome Tsai-ko photo.

  139. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 3:20 pm

I can’t recall a WAC team winning on the Smurph Turf.

  140. chopsueyboy April 18, 2010 3:21 pm

    Red turf?

    What might come next?
    White turf at Penn State?
    http://withleather.uproxx.com/2010/02/red-turf-what-might-come-next

  141. Ralph April 18, 2010 3:22 pm

Eastern Washington put in a red field, they are not D1 but an NCAA school. I thought TCU is scheduled to put in a purple field, and another college with orange. No NCAA sanctions that I know of.

  142. Pauoa Boy April 18, 2010 3:22 pm

I think if Under Armour hired someone to design better shirts and merchandise you would see more people wearing the green and black. Boise State has nice stuff and designs but UH’s stuff is kind of boring and ugleh. I wear it regardless but they need someone who can bring in some fresh designs and stuff…IMO

  143. wafan April 18, 2010 3:23 pm

If you lived in Boise what other choices do you have except for blue and orange?

    Potato brown?

  144. Pauoa Boy April 18, 2010 3:26 pm

Lutu has good height to be a DB or S…he should have adequate speed and lateral quickness being a basketball player. Hope he picks up the nuances of the defense quick though, his height alone could help in the secondary with his range…

  145. postmanke April 18, 2010 3:27 pm

Paaluhi – nice to see talent able to come back home to play.

just wondering, if he were to enlists does he take a deferment with that branch, completes his college education then his time in the military begins? interesting way to transfer. hope it works out, he looks like a legitimate pro prospect.

  146. Ralph April 18, 2010 3:29 pm

welcome home Pa’aluhi, more homegrown returning to the aina to represent the state.

  147. Pauoa Boy April 18, 2010 3:29 pm

Whatever happened to the other guy a couple years ago that switched from basketball to football…wasn’t he a DB too? Not Akpan or Alama-Francis but I think he was a point guard???

  148. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 3:33 pm

I’m not exactly sure he enlisted.
But he does have his release, and he did call UH.

  149. postmanke April 18, 2010 3:35 pm

We really need to put an end to this turf madness.. Win every WAC game no matter what!

Come football season – Turf’s Up!

  150. Bulla April 18, 2010 3:37 pm

    wafan,

that’s a funny, not bad for someone on the West Coast, haha

  151. Pauoa Boy April 18, 2010 3:38 pm

Regardless if Pa’aluhi enlisted he can still not go if he chooses to…and can still go to UH… Dunno if he’d have to sit out either because if OSU let him go to join and something happened to him that he didn’t, he shouldn’t be restricted to anything I don’t think???

  152. Bulla April 18, 2010 3:38 pm

Pa’aluhi to UH….wow, that would be something…will have to wait and see. Moniz, whew, good luck, rumor mill working overtime…..guess the info yesterday about his locker being cleaned out was another ‘slip of the tongue’ maybe? who knows, gotta get some clarity and nail down our starting QB…….

    430 practice…………nice 🙂

This isn’t worth too much since it’s all conjecture. Using huge assumptions (which I normally am very adverse to), I think Pa’aluhi 1) had a family situation that had him needing to be home, 2) joining the military might have been a way to help his family situation. I’m not sure this is possible…would need a recruiter to come on and comment…but he could enlist with the reserve component of the military and attend UH while going to once a month weekend drills. If he’s in the “Green to Gold” program, he could get a military scholarship to attend school and a commission at graduation while getting credit for serving in the reserve component (NG or Army Reserve). There was a wr who played football and had a military scholarship instead of a UH one. Just conjecture on my part.

5 more road games for UH, 18-18, dead last in 7 team WAC standings, but attendance is posted at 3K per home game. The team needs a run to qualify for the WAC tournament, I think the 7th place team is not included in the WAC playoffs this year.

So, any requests for Tuesday’s show?

I don’t know if she would but I vote for “Amanda Paterson” There are a lot of question about compliance.

  166. βρεω808 April 18, 2010 4:25 pm

    #161 => Tutu makes a booboo…. 🙄 😀 😆

  167. Ralph April 18, 2010 4:30 pm

Amanda deals with personal and confidential info, she can’t talk of any issues bloggers may have with specific athletes only procedures and that would be boring. All she can say is that she is following procedures and protocal and its done on a timely basis.

  168. Pomai April 18, 2010 4:31 pm

Ralph sorry but I don’t think there should be any kind of playoff for a conference unless you have more than one division. IMHO if you win your conference then you go to the finals for the national championship.

  169. βρεω808 April 18, 2010 4:33 pm

Mahalo Scott – for the WB, and for the WB Show too! 😀

  170. Ralph April 18, 2010 4:35 pm

Pomai the WAC has a tournament, got to qualify, no and if or buts, and as it stands, UH is 2-7 and dead last.

  171. Pomai April 18, 2010 4:35 pm

Ralph there are a lot of questions that people have of those procedures and the dealing with the NCAA, there would I think be a lot of tough question about how her department operates or doesn’t operate.

  172. Pomai April 18, 2010 4:39 pm

Dang Ralph I know that, but just don’t agree with it. Not right for a team say that goes 5-5 to get a shot over a team that was say 10-0. Why play the season, just for practice? I mean there are times when a bad team (UH) get a hot series and a good team gets in a funk an loses a series.

i was hoping that lutu would try out for football.

    lutu = bumbulla slot.

I’m with you RedZone. I was just thinking last week how it looks like Coach Arnold is moving in a direction away from Lutu being able to make a contribution to the basketball program. I envisioned him as a slot wide receiver, similar to an Ed McCafferey, the former Denver Broncos wide receiver.

Of course, as usual I am probably wrong, since he already has experience as a defensive back. But the offensive side of the ball is where I would try him.

  179. Pauoa Boy April 18, 2010 5:18 pm

BG, you right on that. It goes for any branch if he chose to go reserve route. He can be awarded NROTC scholarship and be commisioned once his degree is in hand. Also get reserve G.I. Bill to pay for school. Or Platoon Leaders Class program, which all pretty much would serve the same purpose…pay his college tuition, give him stipend pay to handle other expenses and once graduated with degree in hand be commisioned. I think each branch has the same programs, they just call em different things…

Talking about the practice T-gate…need mo’ practice! Let’s see…1) we forgot the coffee maker; 2) coffee cups; 3) I forgot my cooler; 4) CfrmKona brought the only football and it was miniature sized; and plenny mo’. Gotta remember to pick up the keys the prior afternoon cuz the office doesn’t open until 0930 on Saturdays, and Myki/SJ insist on being there at 0900!!!

A huge addition to the crew was M/M NSF. Sheila supervises and NSF does everything else! Rolls up and unpacks his grill, and 10 minutes later (no exaggeration!) the charcoal is hot enough to put on the ribs, steak, sausages, and assorted other stuff. Then he whips out his cutting board and proceeds to cut up everything coming off the grill. And we get all this delicious fuud hot off the grill while sitting around and talking story. Life simply can’t get any better.

Sailor Blue did have a sinfully decadent fudge…sooo smooooth, but he made up for it by having Mrs SB bring a delicious papaya seed/mustard salad dressing.for the tossed salad.

Sweet-sour spare ribs, kalua pig, lomi-lomi salmon, poke, two wonderful kinds of bread pudding, Midori’s cute desserts, poi, Tanioka’s sushi, malassadas, and lots, lots more…typical Tsaiko-gate.

  191. jm2375 April 18, 2010 6:11 pm

Congrats to Liz. Dat’s one big boy.

Had fun at the puppy reunion. Everyone’s tired out, esp. the dog. 😀

  192. BG April 18, 2010 6:11 pm

I just voted again. If you go out and come back in to the site, it looks like you can vote as often as you like.

  193. jm2375 April 18, 2010 6:13 pm

BTW, BG dug into the desserts *1st* before he had lunch. 🙄

  194. BG April 18, 2010 6:16 pm

OK. We’re trying, Jason. Voted 6X, but I gotta back to my homework. Good luck!

    bbl

  195. sjmacro April 18, 2010 6:18 pm

Thanks BG. Jason we voted again a few times and it registers. Where’s the spambots when you need them? 🙂

  196. BG April 18, 2010 6:18 pm

    Aw jmxxx

I call it “flow efficiency”. While everyone else is crowding around the main dishes, I have the dessert table all to myself!!!

  197. oldie April 18, 2010 6:20 pm

When you try to vote a second time, they say that you already voted, but they give you an update on the votes. Moanalua 105 votes down.

  198. BG April 18, 2010 6:22 pm

    Jason

Time to call all the MoHS students and tell them to get voting!!! And keep voting.

  199. oldie April 18, 2010 6:24 pm

I get the following when I try again:

Thank you, we have already counted your vote.

Good news though, Moanalua closing the gap: 68 votes down.

  200. Jason April 18, 2010 6:29 pm

Thank you all again! I have to head out to church, but please keep on voting, and reminding others to vote!

I was looking things up, the four regional finalists will compete against each other for $10,000 for their art program! So please help Moanalua get to the final four!

    http://www.vans.com/customculture/vote.html

  201. oldie April 18, 2010 6:39 pm

I guess you can vote multiple times. This time I got the following message:

    Thank you for voting!

  202. oldie April 18, 2010 6:42 pm

It didn’t count that vote, but Moanalua is now only 37 votes down.

This is almost as much fun as the time we voted multiple times for Jasmine Trias!

  203. NorthShoreFan April 18, 2010 7:19 pm

    Guud evening Tsaikos!…

Just getting in and now have some free time…been a busy and emotional day..but all is guud..

Want to send out a shout of Mahalos to all the Tsikos at the P-Tailgate yesterday. I was great to touch base with some who we haven’t seen for a while and to meet new Tsaikos and best of all to put faces to the names.
what a day!…capped off with a sweep by Na Wahine!

Kekoa was like a prophet..call for the runs and we had a blast “correcting” the ump.
BleedGreen808…swim in da river by Waiau Power Plant?!?!…no wonder you BleedGreen! Was great to meet up with you.

Would luv to hear from Brashton for the Warrior Beat Show…would like to send some BIG MAHALOS over to him since we won’t be seeing him on the field of battle.

Regarding Paaluhi…good to have the boyz come back home..am concerned about his status though…he received a release because he was going to enlist in the service. Could his release be rescinded now?…If so what is the consequences?

Anyhoo…have a good one this evening…off to the Korean Soaps…

  204. oldie April 18, 2010 7:28 pm

Sorry, Jason. Looks like Moanalua fell a little short. Polls closed. Funny one of the polls still open. We should have had extra time since we a several time zones behind. Only a few of my votes took. Not sure how they knew I voted before. I was using my iPhone.

  205. Stephen Tsai April 18, 2010 7:43 pm

Next week is supposed to be the last Sunday for The Advertiser under Gannett. I’m thinking … karaoke night? (Or day?)
We can combine with Esme’s group, too.
    Thoughts?

  206. Rob25 April 18, 2010 7:53 pm

I’m in ST!! Let me know the time and the place.

  207. HiFlyer April 18, 2010 8:07 pm

ST – Let’s go for it, let me know when and where.

  208. Jason April 18, 2010 8:18 pm

Hmm, this is so not right! Polls were supposed to close at 11:59 PM PDT! This is not fair for ANY of the schools involved. When you consider the stakes—remember, the grand prize is $10,000 for the school’s art department—I’m hoping Vans does something to rectify this.

  209. SteveM April 18, 2010 8:25 pm

    ST — karaoke? I’m in…but… If you don’t have a place already–

How many attending will determine/eliminate where possibilities and associated expenses.

So for whoever coordinates this, the first step is here — who’s in?

  210. Pauoa Boy April 18, 2010 8:31 pm

Aunty Liz congrats to the new addition to the ohana, wow das one big boy almost 10lbs. sheesh…

  213. Garret April 18, 2010 9:01 pm

This is what Doris posted on SportsHawaii:

I remember something like this happened with a mainland player, from the midwest I think it was, it was in the papers several years ago. I dont recall the exact details, and David would have to check with the NCAA (or UH would) but I believe the ruling was that because he got a release to go into the military and not a release to a specific college (which is normally what is required) he would have to ask for a direct release to university he wanted to go to or he would have to sit out two years. Hopefully Im wrong. David is an awesome young man and an awesome player from a nice family.

  214. d1島 April 18, 2010 9:03 pm

    Garret,

    Thanks.

    Yeesh….

  215. Garret April 18, 2010 9:05 pm

If Pa‘aluhi does have to sit out 2 years, I think that he would have 1 year to play 1. The other thing is that there might be his release to join the military might *not* give him the freedom to sign with any NCAA team.

This is a worst-case scenario and maybe there are some other hardship factors that would reduce the time he would need to sit out. But this does put a whole different spin on the feel-good stories I remember reading when it was announced that Pa‘aluhi was going to give up his football scholarship to join the military.

  216. Garret April 18, 2010 9:11 pm

    roysan,

Compliance departments do *not* need to violate the privacy of the student-athlete. They regularly remind the student-athlete to save copies of their medical records or have the student-athlete make the request to have a copy of the medical records in question sent to the Compliance department to be kept just in case they are needed.

Schools around the country do not seem to have a problem having all the information gathered as it happens so that they are ready to provide the necessary documentation when a student-athlete wishes to file an appeal to the NCAA for a 6th season. Schools with larger and smaller budgets compared to UH seem to be able to do this without violating privacy laws, so I do not think that privacy laws are the reason why UH did not seem to keep track of making sure that the necessary medical records were kept on file for the student-athletes.

  220. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc April 18, 2010 10:23 pm

Just a quick reminder that next Saturday is the first round volleyball playoff game for the Warriors so those of you who are planning a karaoke party, please take that into consideration when selecting a date/time. I assume that Stephen will be working right up to the time the transfer takes place – and he covers volleyball.

  221. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc April 18, 2010 10:44 pm

Pomai: I can barely see home plate and the pitcher’s mound these days, let alone follow the game, unless I use binoculars, listen to the occasional radio broadcast, and have the fielding action explained to me by DrDoc or Protector.

However, unless we can somehow snag some high-up bleacher seats at Ching Field, what we’ll probably do is skip the Warrior Bowl & go directly from the softball game to The Les. I don’t know the game well enough to be a sideline “observer” even if I had my eyeballs still on the job.

    .

  222. Slugger April 18, 2010 11:10 pm

    Hiyah!

Back from the HIFF movies & trying to catch up on the blog.

  227. mctruck April 19, 2010 4:00 am

maybe a little off-subject, but why is Dean Wilson not playing on the PGA circuit???

also, it seems like (NETFLIX) pop-ups on this site avoid my pop-up blocker setup….am I the only person encountering this problem??

    Have a terrific back-to-work Monday!

    HiHo….

  231. jm2375 April 19, 2010 5:50 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos! Happy Monday.

Don’t forget, tickets go on sale this morning at 8am for the MPSF playoff game. ST told me the players will be outside the SSC box office at 7:30 handing out “stuff”. 😀

mctruck – #228 – I think he finished outside of the top 125 on the money list, which you need to keep your card. I don’t think he did well enough in Q-school to get it back either. So, he has to qualify or get exemptions to play PGA events. Not sure if he’s on the Nationwide tour.

I’m using Firefox and those da$# pop-ups show up too (and for Brand X too). It’s a little annoying.

WAC Hitter and Pitcher of the Week are…

Nevada’s Lauren Lastrapes and Fresno State’s Morgan Melloh have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 12-18. This is the first-ever honor for Lastrapes and the second honor of the season and 10th of her career for Melloh.

Lastrapes, a freshman outfielder from Laguna Nigel, Calif., hit .600 with a double, two home runs (including a grand slam), four runs scored and seven RBI as Nevada won a WAC series at New Mexico State last weekend. She was 6-for-10 at the plate with a 1.300 slugging percentage and .600 on-base percentage. In the first game of the series, Lastrapes belted an RBI double in the second inning, opening the door for a six-run inning that gave Nevada a 6-2 lead as the Wolf Pack went on to an 8-6 win. In game two, she crushed her first career grand slam in Nevada’s six-run sixth inning, which proved to be the difference in a 7-2 victory. Though the Pack fell in the final game of the series, Lastrapes hit her second home run is many days as she went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.

Melloh, a junior from Fishers, Ind., went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA last week. She pitched a complete-game shutout in the second game of the series at San Jose State to earn the series victory for the Bulldogs. Melloh allowed just three hits and no runs while striking out 11.

Rainbow Wahine Melissa Gonzalez who hit two homers, 6 RBIs, and batted .394 was a consideration along with teammate Stephanie Ricketts who went 2-0 against LaTech, ERA of 1.11 and had 19 strikeouts.

Usually I don’t bother mentioning other WAC softball players of the week, but I find it fitting that our last two WAC opponents in the regular season are starting to pick up somewhat after not having the WAC season go as originally planned for both respective teams.

For Nevada, they are just looking down at the cellar where they started saving some money for last month’s and this month’s rent, but by handling NMSU, they’ve got some cushion, but not much. Nevada ACE Katie Holverson had the jump on the Wahine all last season as the ONLY WAC regular season series loss was at the hands of the Lady Wolfpack at home. Shoot, we beat FSU at Fresno!!!

Melloh too, isn’t having a great statistical season and FSU isn’t enjoying a lofty position at the top of the WAC as previously thought. FSU has won their lion’s share of games in the conference, but aren’t blowing out teams either with a multitude of 2-1 wins.

Coach Coolen knows. He knows Nevada turns it up a notch when they play us and regardless of their record, they will be hosting the Wahine this weekend. Yes, it’s thin air again, but thin air can’t help you when you aren’t helping yourselves.

I believe Nevada poses the biggest threat to an undefeated WAC regular season at the moment. Cliche? Yes, but fact is fact. Nevada is going to be super tough as the Wahine batters continue the obstacle course of good pitching at the end of this regular season.
