Warriors to host MPSF opener

The volleyball Warriors will host an MPSF tournament opener Saturday because they beat UC Santa Barbara, and UC San Diego upset Pepperdine.

UH and Pepperdine finished the regular season tied for fourth with 14-8 MPSF records, but the Warriors own the tie-breaker. The top four teams host.

UH will host Pepperdine.

It is odd timing that a day after legislating against me-first players — there will be consequences to excessively celebrating touchdowns — the NCAA decided to oust one of the good guys.

Sure, by the NCAA’s judgment, Brashton Satele did not provide proper documentation to earn a medical hardship that would allow him to play as as sixth-year senior in 2010. He needed letters, written in 2005, showing that he was not healthy enough to play in 2005. The NCAA refused to accept affidavits —  from doctors and coaches — because they were crafted after a deadline that was never publicized.

That’s nit-picky, and just unfair.

First, requests for medical hardships are always submitted after the season. I mean, how do you know if it’s a season-ending injury before the season is over?

Second, that season, UH tried to play all of its freshman. Why? Because a significant number of freshmen from the 2004 class, most notably running back Andrew Pearman and quarterback Taylor Humphries, quit after the season because of homesickness or lack of playing time.

Wanting to avoid a repeat, the Warriors decided to play as many of the 2005 freshmen as possible. That’s why Rocky Savaiigaea, JoPierre Davis, B.J. Fruen, Adam Leonard, Solomon Elimimian, Dan Kelly, Mario Cox, etc., ended up playing that year. Leonard, who was recovering from a torn ACL, probably should have redshirted that year. Laupepa Letuli was set to play before suffering a dislocated collarbone. John Estes did redshirt, but he was taken on a road trip to San Jose.

And Satele, too, would have played that year if not for an arm injury.

It’s a shame the NCAA did not apply the common-sense standard.

Even worse, it was ridiculous that it took so long to rule on the matter. Because Satele had earned a bachelor’s degree in December, UH had to use one of its 25 allotted new scholarships on him and, in a weird scenario, he counted as part of the 2010 recruiting class. The Warriors could have used the scholarship to recruit another player.

It also nearly jeopardized his chances of signing a free-agent contract with an NFL team this year. And it impacted the Warriors’ spring plans.

Now it is Letuli, who also is seeking a medical exemption, left to fret.

* * * * *

Satele has not signed with an agent, but he said he will be represented by Kenny Zuckerman. Zuckerman is the agent for former Warriors Estes, Ryan Mouton and Davone Bess.

After an impressive performance at UH’s Pro Day this month, Satele received inquiries from the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders are noted for auditioning a lot of players; it would be nice if Satele gets a chance to try out.

Remember the debate on whether Kelly Majam, the nation’s home run leader, should bat leadoff? Well, yesterday, she took 14 consecutive balls — leading to three walks — before seeing her first strike. That proves she has the patience, and great eye, to be a leadoff hitter.

Let’s give away two more tickets to the April 30 baseball game.

To enter, please post: Why isn’t the volleyball match being broadcast?

Avis will select a winner tonight.

I like the recruits coach Gib has on board so far; especially the JC’s who still will have 3 for 3.

Best wishes to Brashton. Kenny Zuckerman helped Davone find the perfect team for him to establish himself…hopefully Brashton will find a good situation also.

    ST,

Yesterday in your blog you made it clear that UH’s compliance department tells all athletes to collect contemporaneous documentation whenever they suffer an injury. So, *UH* knows about the rule and tells every athlete about it now. Your blog yesterday indicated that UH knows about the rule so how is this rule not publicized?

  6. mctruck April 17, 2010 4:10 am

I’m reading in the LA Times that UCLA-HC Rick Neuheisel is quoted saying that he’s not too pleased with their progress implementing the, “Pistol” offense and at this juncture is wondering if they should continue with it or junk it??(wonder whose idea it was to adopt it to begin with?)…..Norman Chow? hmmmmm?

It is unfortunate for Brashton, but I am happy for him that he was able to get his degree. With his degree, there are so many other ways that he can help the program. He can work on his master’s, for example, and help as a graduate assistant in the future like Inoke Funaki is now doing. He can serve as a role model for young high school athletes who are interested in playing for the University of Hawaii. Yes, I know he wants to still play ball and maybe he can get a tryout somewhere, but not all is lost and this young man, who is well-liked and who is a natural leader, will accomplish a lot in his lifetime.

Many times, coaching staffs and players alike are most interested in the moment and getting players back in the lineup when maybe they should be sitting out in any particular season and focus on healing from their injuries. It sounds to me that if the doctors say at the moment that a player is not healthy to play, then that player should be out and that forecloses the hope of the coaches and the player to fill-in the team’s needs for the moment. Anyone can find a doctor five years later to render an “opinion” and I am sure that the NCAA is aware of this. I do agree for Brashton’s sake that the NCAA should have come out sooner with a decision, but a sixth year should really be an exceptional circumstance for anyone. Anyway, best wishes to Brashton and all of last year’s UH seniors.

    Sorry about Brashton.

Credit to Jim Donovan. Gib could not have been an easy choice, as Pops’ initial impression could predictably seem to resonate with many. But da Gibber is clearly going in a new direction and I sense the level of athleticism is going to be markedly improved.

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂 🙂 🙂

I’m gonna sound like a whiner, but I can’t help but wonder if the NCAA would treat a star player at a big name school differently.

The inference here is that all of the doctors and coaches who signed affidavits on Brashton’s behalf are not considered trustworthy.

Why wouldn’t medical records from the year in question be ample evidence of his season ending injury?

I’m gonna sound like a whiner, but I can’t help but wonder if the NCAA would treat a star player at a big name school differently.

    DPK,

Oklahoma’s best LB had his application for a medical redshirt denied. He had been “hopeful” to get his 6th season of eligibility to be able to play in 2010. Oklahoma’s Compliance Department expressed their disappointment in the denial.

His situation isn’t exactly the same as Brashton’s, but is an example of the NCAA denying a big-name school’s athlete just like they denied Brashton.

  31. Garret April 17, 2010 7:13 am

I’ve personally seen how some boosters can get too close to programs (especially in the 1980s) and we have all read tons of stories about how some “friends” of a program can bend the rules a little to try to help their school. Does anyone imagine that a school like Alabama would have a hard time finding a doctor to write them a note in 2010 saying that a player should get a medical redshirt because of an “undocumented” injury in a past year?

This is a classic example of how a program could get a second redshirt year for their athletes. They could easily apply for the medical redshirt and line up medical testimony years after the supposed injury if they wanted to keep a player for a 6th year…and if the player wasn’t a starter they could just let his eligibility run out.

Many NCAA rules that are unfair to athletes are there because some unethical programs bent the rules and found loopholes in the old rules. Often the way they close the loophole ends up hurting the student-athletes.

Garret understand where your coming from in #31, when talking about billions of dollars, honesty and values just about goes out the window. But it still doesn’t sit right with me that they can’t see the truth for what it is. One way to correct a situation as you stated would be to enforce the death penalty on them when they are caught, might make others think twice?

  38. Da Punchbowl Kid April 17, 2010 7:32 am

Good luck to Bruddah Brashton. Though I’m disappointed that he, Rocky & Blaze aren’t going to be crushing Trojans this Fall, I’ll be totally satisfied if these very deserving young men get legitimate shots at the NFL.

  44. Garret April 17, 2010 7:56 am

    DPK,

The NCAA is *not* fair to everyone, of course. However, a lot of that is because of how smaller schools do not have the resources to have a fully staffed compliance department. ST has mentioned several times how UH players have problems gathering the medical reports and finding doctors who treated them years after their injuries/surgeries.

So, if you have one school that submits all of the records promptly and has all of the contemporaneous documentation…and another school that is missing some critical medical records and does NOT have contemporaneous documentation, do you really expect the NCAA to treat them the same?

This is just like how UH fans love to complain that the NCAA is late to rule on petitions by UH athletes, when it turns out that UH turned in their applications weeks or *months* after others schools did. Sure, UH has trouble getting everything together because they do not keep records like they are supposed to! But if you sent in your tax forms on April 15, do you really expect to get your refund the same time as someone who submitted their tax forms on February 1?

EVERY DARN YEAR we hear about problems in gathering records at UH. EVERY DARN YEAR we have UH fans blame the NCAA for being late in ruling on the petitions of UH athletes. Nobody seems to care about the fact that the NCAA gets tons of applications every year and the FAIR thing is do rule on them in the order they are received. Why should UH get a ruling before schools who actually submitted their petitions before them? Why should UH get a ruling before schools that submit complete petitions when UH has to repeatedly get asked to provide additional information?

People love to complain about the IRS also. But the fact is that if you submit your forms early, you should expect to get your refund earlier than someone who submitted their forms months later. For example, last year we submitted our tax forms on February 1 and received our refunds right away. California residents who submitted their taxes in April (and maybe March) got IOUs from the state that they could not cash. We were not treated equally by the state, but it wasn’t my fault that the others submitted their forms more than 2 months after me. For both the IRS and NCAA, if you submit things early when they are not overloaded, you get faster and better service.

  45. d1島 April 17, 2010 7:56 am

On the other hand, do you think the NCAA is completely even handed when meteing out punishments or handing down decisions?

The NCAA got so upset with Jerry Tarkanian once that it issued stiff sanctions against SW Middle Carolina St.! 😆

  46. Garret April 17, 2010 7:58 am

I’ve been ranting too much about this so I’ll be off blog for a few days. My in-laws recently arrived so I’ll be busy anyway–I was going to blog after they went to sleep, but I think I should take a blog break before I really tear into the failures during the HF years of UH’s compliance department.

Garret the bad thing is that the fumbler’s inaptitude is still haunting us today, he has to go down as one of the worse hires that was ever made at UH.

  54. A-House April 17, 2010 8:25 am

With all due respects to Garret, one of our most favorite bloggers and his family, I must hold true to my comparison of the NCAA national championship take away to Brashton’s decision by the the NCAA.

Again, we see that the NCAA has used a “rule”, which according to ST impacted on the NCAA non-accpetance of medical documents supporting Brashton’s quest for that elusive 6th year of eligiblity — “because they were crafted after a deadline that was never publicized”.

I do agree with Garret that UH should have taken all necessary steps to accumulate documentation to protect the player against the NCAA – “should have” – well known after the fact phrase used so many times by so many different individuals in many different fields.

It reminds me of the legal point used so many times in Hawaii – the “prudent man rule” – that is, what would a prudent man do in a specific circumstance – I had great difficulty in finding that “prudent man” in many of the claims I handled for Work Comp and Liability many years ago. Yet, some 30+ years later, this elusive “prudent man” keeps appearing in civil litigation in Hawaii. Unfortunately, defense attorneys can not ask the “jury” if they can really place themselves as the “prudent man”. I suppose any attorney can ramble on about the prudent man until the plaintiff’s counsel and/or Judge raises an objection.

Likewise, when so many will “attack” the State of Hawaii or City and County about unsafe road conditons, but say very little or nothing about the driver who was speeding, intoxicated and under age, etc. It’s always the State of City was at fault; human nature is a wonder to behold!

  55. Calvin from Kona April 17, 2010 8:27 am

    Did I hear ‘fumbler?”

  56. Pomai April 17, 2010 8:35 am

Wow this weather is more like a game day tail-gate rather than a spring practice one. But we will pull up our chinstraps and do our required workout to get the hand mouth coordination down right. Then after that we solve the world problems of the day = NCAA, YUCK.

Ok. Had my own mini Practice- Gate. Grandson is taking his time so we had a fabulous brunch. I had crab cake Benedict and taters with very yummy habanero hot sauce.
Now daughter is back at the center to rest and I have time to catch up whilst the other adults run the granddaughter around the park.

Happy Tsai-ko day! Miss you guys!

  61. Stephen Tsai April 17, 2010 9:51 am

That was an interesting comparison between NCAA and IRS.
Of course, in Hawaii, you might file on time, but the state isn’t going to give you a refund check until the summer.
And, of course, I still can’t figure out how the state taxes you on the state refund from the previous year.
Then again, I’m still puzzled by the inheritance tax because I still believe that money accumulated was taxed many times before.

Wow, Suh the Nebraska DT announced that he is donating $2 million, yup “millions” to the school’s weight program and $600,000 to the college of engineering. He’s not even drafted yet, but projected in the top 10. That’s quite a commitment to giving back to your school, WOW!

Anyway to get a list of UH pro football players give backs? I know that AC has been real generous giving back to UH, but he is a basketball player. Anyone out there know about FB totals to the school?

  64. (Jesse)James April 17, 2010 10:28 am

Good morning Gangeez….dang, gonna miss all UH related events today as I got called in to the office and will be working most of the day…..Oh well, next time….guess I’m gonna be moved to 2nd string for the T-gates from now on…

Hope everyone has a great time today….and the weather holds out.

  65. Jason April 17, 2010 10:30 am

Hope everyone has a good time at the practice tailgate, I want to be there but I have way too much work to do. Gotta prepare things for church tomorrow, grade papers, write worksheets and PowerPoints, start on my case study for HPU … 🙁

  66. Stephen Tsai April 17, 2010 10:45 am

    Yes, I was still sleeping.
Didn’t get up until almost 10. But I did trudge up the hill to drop off the beer.

  67. Stephen Tsai April 17, 2010 10:52 am

    OK, Pomai, I tweeted something.
I try to limit my tweets and, especially, my Facebook posts. As someone in the office told me, there’s a difference between social networking and social annoying.

  68. bluefintuna April 17, 2010 11:00 am

    Re-Satele case

Since the physicians are the custodian of the patients medical records. And since there are patient and confidentiality laws then why are posters here making it a mockery to think that the compliance people have all the medical records and data of the players tucked away in files.

Just curious. Are they really to blame, if some things are out of their hands?

I also think it’s a mockery of the medical profession to think that patient’s records get lost.

  69. Kazz April 17, 2010 11:01 am

Remember the debate on whether Kelly Majam, the nation’s home run leader, should bat leadoff? Well, yesterday, she took 14 consecutive balls — leading to three walks — before seeing her first strike. That proves she has the patience, and great eye, to be a leadoff hitter.

If that’s gonna be the trend for Nevada and Fresno State to pitch around Majam and I mean truly pitch around her and get her to walk then fine… Can’t help it. It’s a sign of FEAR!!!

    They’re scared. They should be.

Iwata, Gonzalez, J-Rod, Aguirre, Tauali’i, etc… need to keep making good contact as the season inches along towards the tournament.

  70. A-House April 17, 2010 11:04 am

OK, gang, ST delivered the goods – all the goods including Wafan’s prizes!

  71. LizKauai (iPhone PDX) April 17, 2010 11:17 am

Mahalo SailorBlue for pix on fb.

ST- we do need more tweets from you. Other folks are mostly speculation. You are our Cronkite.

Prayers for RK’s dad recovering from surgery.

  72. Stephen Tsai April 17, 2010 11:23 am

    Cronkite is dead.
What are you trying to say about my career?

  73. Kazz April 17, 2010 11:28 am

    Cronkite?

Is that the green glowing stuff that kills Superman?

  74. Stephen Tsai April 17, 2010 11:29 am

Ever notice that something always happens to UH teams?
Way back when, UH is on a roll, then Seth Sundberg is out with a torn spleen.
The next year AC plays an entire season with a subluxed shoulder.
And a few years after that, Nerius Puida S food poisoning at Golden Corral.
And now Steven Hunt is ill in a must-win match.
And UH loses its MLB ….

  75. Stephen Tsai April 17, 2010 11:32 am

This is what I don’t get about Superman.
Pieces of his old planet — Kryptonite — make him weak. But wearing the baby blanket from his old planet doesn’t?
And how did Ma Kent sew the Superman costume when it’s supposed to be made of material that can’t be penetrated.
And why should we read Super Boy comics when we know that he’ll never die because, well, he grows up to be Superman?

  76. Kazz April 17, 2010 11:53 am

What bothered me about the Superman TV series, the one with Dean Cain and Terri Hatcher, is he only wore glasses as Clark Kent.

I mean really? The people around him were idiots and blind.

At least the black and white Superman series the dude was wearing a hat at least.

  77. Kazz April 17, 2010 11:56 am

OMG!!! Some guy just came up to my desk at work and started pushing the Book of Mormon on me, he even left me a copy!!!

Hmmm… I get out of the office in 45 minutes and I’ve got some time to kill before the softball DH.

At least I have something to read now. 😯

  78. Lopaka43 April 17, 2010 12:04 pm

    Aloha, Tsaiko Ohana,

We wanted to be at the practice Tailgate, but we decided to spare you exposure to the dread head cold demon that has had me under its thumb for the last five days. I’m still hacking, coughing and spitting crud and decided that would not make a good addition to the event.

We will definitely see you next time. The USC game is on my birthday!! What a gift a victory would be!! Go Warriors!! Go Bows!!

  79. LizKauai (iPhone PDX) April 17, 2010 12:25 pm

Lopaka43- a true sacrifice such as missing a p-gate must be invested into a Warrior-Bow karma bowl.

    Superman? Huh.
ST is my Cronkite because I trust what he says. He doesn’t toss out speculative remarks just to get readers. I know you know what I mean.

GO BOWS. GO WAHINE. Winnah winnah chicken dinnah!

    Back to our pause programming.
Grandson can’t decide when to show up. Or he has and it isn’t now. 😆

  80. roygbivs[TerenceTwkWong] April 17, 2010 1:23 pm

Why isn’t the volleyball match being broadcast?

that’s horrible about Satele not getting that extra year, going to miss his experience on the field. I wish him all the best!! Thanks #13

  81. RedZone April 17, 2010 1:29 pm

The cute LA tech leadoff batter has the weirdest practice swing I have ever seen. I swear she will break her arm one of these days.

  82. idono April 17, 2010 1:58 pm

    Good news !!!

Mo will be back monday to practice.

Good luck to him and may the force be with him and the UH football team.

  83. Momona April 17, 2010 2:32 pm

    idono – idontinkso.

  84. Maverick April 17, 2010 3:10 pm

Nothing like like a no name coming in with no-ting to do but rant no-tings

  85. Maverick April 17, 2010 3:11 pm

    GO WAHINES
    Swing away!

  86. Pearl City April 17, 2010 3:18 pm

The important thing to remember is like Mr. Tsai, Superman is a journalist.
Sorry about Brashton, but I don’t like to see 6th year college players. College is supposed to be 4 years. They already give you a fifth year just in case.
Rather see NCAA rule of 5 years to play no redshirt, no appeals. That’s it.

  87. jm2375 April 17, 2010 3:26 pm

    Howzit!

Back from the practice t-gate. Most went over to the sb game (and so did the leftovers 🙂 ). As usual, way too much fuuud, but really good. The biru did get there. Thanks ST. Gramps did show up, so did A-joe Had the 4 Fs, just missing football.

    Go Warriors! Go Wahine!

  88. Stretch April 17, 2010 3:29 pm

Not sure if anyone posted already attached is a radio feed from the Men’s Vball team game against UCSB. It’s UCSB radio but at least it’s live

    http://www.kcsb.org/

  89. LizKauai (iPhone PDX) April 17, 2010 3:43 pm

Thanks Stretch! I can hear the webcast. Only get music now but I’ll tune in if all is stil quiet on the baby front!

  90. Kendall April 17, 2010 3:45 pm

Has anyone seen the two basketball recruits around, Shamburger & Barnes?

I hope the weather is nice for them to get some beach time and see all Hawaii has to offer.

  91. ai-eee-soos April 17, 2010 4:12 pm

BaseBows win 2nd game to split DH.

    Christian Johnson injured.

  92. ai-eee-soos April 17, 2010 4:16 pm

    Advertiser staff – HA sports

Jeff Van Doornum hit a two-run homer and a run-scoring single, catcher Kevin Fujii enjoyed a 3-for-4 game with an RBI, and Jesse Moore pitched four shutout innings in relief as Hawai’i rallied past Sacramento State for a 7-4 victory and a split of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader today at Sacramento, Calif.

Sacramento State won the first game, 3-2.

you can read the rest on HA sports.

  93. Stretch April 17, 2010 4:35 pm

There are two games that we need to watch. If UH is able to win today, we can still host IF Northridge loses to BYU or Pepperdine loses at UC San Diego.

As of right now, Northridge is up 2 games to 1 at BYU and Pepperdine leading 1 game to 0 but behind in game 2 23-19. We need one of these two games to go our way!!

  94. Bulla April 17, 2010 4:48 pm

    aloha Tsaikos,

what a great day, ran into the ever so popular Koakane at UH Scrimmage, looking good bro……and observed our illustrious leader busy at getting the scoops abound after practice.

i apologize for not making it to the practice T gate, timing didn’t work out very well to say the least, but we were there in spirit! 🙂

  95. Dennis Halloran April 17, 2010 5:27 pm

Alabama and Auburn Spring games were on ESPN and 91,000 and 63,000 fannies in the stands.
Both looked very good compared to LSU looking ragged last week
Nothin else to do in Tuscaloosa and Auburn
Concession sales probably grossed more than a home revenue at ALoha Stadium and then ESPN probably kicked in $50K
    Rich get richer

  96. expat April 17, 2010 5:36 pm

Well, the volleybows come back to sweep UCSB, but Northridge beat BYU so it looks like the guys will be on the road for the playoffs.

  97. LizKauai (iPhone PDX) April 17, 2010 5:38 pm

SWEET SWEEP! Thanks for the broadcast link, Stretch!

  98. d1島 April 17, 2010 6:08 pm

Wow! Got home from the PracticeGate….

…and just got up from my nap!

    Good job by the VolleyBows.

    Keep it up SoftBows.

C’mon BaseBows, come away with a series split….

  99. d1島 April 17, 2010 6:08 pm

    bbl…

dogs draggin’ me out the door…..

  100. Matt April 17, 2010 6:15 pm

UCSD beat Pepperdine in Men’s VB 3-2 tonight. I think that means UH will be at home for first round of the MPSF playoffs.

  101. jm2375 April 17, 2010 6:36 pm

Congrats to the Bows, Wahine & WARRIORS!!

So, when do tickets go on sale for the playoffs?
Stretch – go review your research on the Beach Boys! 😀

  102. LizKauai (iPhone PDX) April 17, 2010 6:41 pm

Saturday night. PLEASE CHEER FOR ME!!!!
    Go VolleyBows!!!

    Go SoftBows!

  103. Anfield April 17, 2010 7:02 pm

  104. d1島 April 17, 2010 7:07 pm

    It’s pau….

  105. jm2375 April 17, 2010 7:12 pm

    GONZO!!!
    2nd hr of the game!

  106. d1島 April 17, 2010 7:14 pm

Used to work with a guy who played minor league ball. He was a slugger and was telling me that what used to happen when they would homer in some parks is the fans would show appreciation by sticking money in the grandstand fencing. He said it could add up to a pretty nice bonus.

The way the SoftBows have been knockin’ ’em out, it would be fun to see the program pickup some “support” that way.

  107. jm2375 April 17, 2010 7:16 pm

    d1 – I like that idea. 😀

  108. d1島 April 17, 2010 7:18 pm

    BleedGreen808,

It was nice meeting you today! 🙂

  109. jm2375 April 17, 2010 7:18 pm

The softball team needs a corporate sponsor to donate kala for every home run. $100?

  110. jm2375 April 17, 2010 7:20 pm

MERCY ME!! UH 9-0 in 5.

  111. d1島 April 17, 2010 7:22 pm

    Nice win! 😀

  112. Momo April 17, 2010 7:39 pm

Why isn’t the volleyball game not been broadcast?

Way to go ladies softball bows—

  113. Kazz (blkberry_storm) April 17, 2010 8:14 pm

    JM,

During these economic times a company would have to be stupid to donate $100 per Wahine home run!!! 😆

  114. jm2375 April 17, 2010 8:15 pm

Kazz – not even your company? 😆

  115. BleedGreen808 April 17, 2010 8:25 pm

    d1–

Sorry took awhile to post something today. After practice, I took a short nap and then decided to go out and play tennis. I apologize for not attending the softball double header as the sun took a lot out of me.

I guess I didn’t scare you, d1, after our encounters today. Waiting to see if others will talk to me again. 🙂

Kidding aside, it was nice coming out of my shell, finally. I won’t name everyone for the fear of forgetting someone but I had a great time talking to some of the tsaikos who were in attendance this morning. And, again, I do apologize for not having the time and opportunity to talk to some of you. You guys/gals sure know how to make a rookie comfortable.

    Here’s to many more encounters.

Aloha and mahalo from this guy that bleeds green (sorry BG).

I try to limit my tweets and, especially, my Facebook posts. As someone in the office told me, there’s a difference between social networking and social annoying.

Sorry ST but you must have been still sleeping when you posted this, try look at #41

  117. BG April 17, 2010 8:36 pm

BleedGreen808…no need apologize. BleedsGreen is a good handle and I gladly will share it. Thanks for coming by. There will be many more great times to enjoy! YOU were the one to take the first step to show up and we’re glad you did!

  118. BG April 17, 2010 8:42 pm

I have not a clue to what the softball stadium looks like ordinarily. But, it was sure full and rocking today. If I was loud and annoying all day, I certainly apologize. I just hope the Tech pitcher thought the same thing! I never thought that the Army’s psy ops training would come in handy…LOL I really want to sit with A-joe himself and learn from the Master.

  119. Pomai April 17, 2010 8:46 pm

Just got home from the Na Wahine sweep of lose-eanna tech. First game was going good until the last inning, but we still won, now the second game was what everone was waiting for, balls flying out of the park left and right. Kelly is now at 24 HR’s.

Had a good time at the practice, gramps even showed up for a few hours. Good fun, friends and food.

BleedGreen808 glad you enjoyed your self, we will have many more to sit and talk story.

  120. d1島 April 17, 2010 8:50 pm

Looks like all hands made it home safe. 😉

Mahalo to all who showed up for today’s PracticeGate and especially to BG, SailorBlue and Kazz for coordinating things.

NorthShoreFan deserves special kudos for his Force of Fire bbq setup! Da buggah eez meen!

Lots of fuud and libation, just not enuf consumers! But days okay, practice makes perfect! 🙂

  121. d1島 April 17, 2010 8:53 pm

Why isn’t the volleyball match being broadcast?

  122. tommui April 17, 2010 9:10 pm

    re #120

Had good intentions of being one of the consumers and going to the practice and the double header. Ended up baby-sitting and making Iolani a tad richer by taking her to the carnival.

Wonder why the children have all the energy and we old folks have none!

  123. Jason April 17, 2010 9:43 pm

I don’t know why I didn’t post this before, but I’m hoping people see this. Moanalua High School is competing in a national shoe design contest put on by Vans. A few of my students are part of the design team. Please vote for Moanalua in its bid to win the Southwest region. We’re currently in 2nd place, around 300 votes behind!

(I think you only get one vote per IP address, though.)

  124. Jason April 17, 2010 9:44 pm

    Oh yeah, here’s the link:

  125. Jason April 17, 2010 10:07 pm

I’m guessing everyone watching KHON and KITV just voted, cause we’re now in first! But it’s not over yet, still got some time left to vote.

    Thanks everyone!

  128. Kekoa April 17, 2010 11:38 pm

Thank to all in attendance today at the practice t-gate. Always good to see everyone, and enjoy sharing the food.

All kidding aside, Mahalo blogmeister for providing the case of imported beru. JMxxxx was kind enuff to bust it out for us after the A-House ohana delivered. (Sounds complicated?…yes it was!)

New blood flows thru the Tsaiko Nation, and it happens to be ‘green!’ Excellent way to welcome in a newcomer. I hope more peeps decide to take the plunge this season and become regular fans.

Want to acknowledge blogger HoweLee’s new friend as well. You can tell she will be a *keeper.* She has already volunteered to help out Doris Sullivan and her Golf Tourney crew. That is awesome!

CofK brought along our resident Tsaiko Therapist. She immediately started treating some of the more obvious Tsaiko’s with their minor mental afflictions. Congratulations to Pomai for volunteering to be her first victim patient. (Ralph, did you notice any difference?).

More later, going crash Kealoha for now. Good nite!

  129. LizKauai (iPhone PDX) April 18, 2010 12:21 am

  131. protector April 18, 2010 1:18 am

Congrats to the VolleyBows and Coach Wade and the SoftBows & Coach Coolen! Congrats to the BaseBows for winning the 2nd half of their double-header with the Hornets!

  132. protector April 18, 2010 1:55 am

It was a pleasure to meet BleedGreen808, Calvin from Kona and Tsaiko-therapist at the practice T-gate. Wish I could’ve stayed a little longer.

Was very impressed with NorthShoreFan’s grilling prowess!

    Bulla,

    – At the football practice, Slugger thought she had made a ‘Beast’ sighting in the Makai stands. I told her he did bear some resemblance but said I did not think it was him & felt he might’ve been on the field. Little while later saw him in on a play where a convoy of defenders recovered a turnover? Then Slugger let me know the Beast sighting was really his (older?) brother.

  133. mctruck April 18, 2010 3:28 am

re: #95, Alabama/Auburn fans going to watch their respective teams just for practice in them numbers…..”that’s what they live for”.

My (X) who was born and raised in Alabama say’s they’d have thousands show up just to watch their teams roast hot dogs if there was ever one held.

  134. LizKauai (Tutu) April 18, 2010 3:30 am

    Hiya!
Jase- voted in the Vans contest. Lookin good!

    Good morning, everyone!

  137. wafan April 18, 2010 4:43 am

Sorry so late but I do thank you for the birthday wishes!

I was with my kids in Yakima for the SkillsUSA Washington State Leadership Conference and Skills Championships. No, we did not take any 1st place medallions; but we did have a whole lot of 2nds and 3rds! Whoo-hoo!!!

Unfortunately, 2nds and 3rds do not get to go to the national conference in KC, MO. It really is the nation’s best — estimated to be the top 2% in the nation.

But! The kids are fired up and are talking very positively about next year.

  138. wafan April 18, 2010 4:48 am

Going to be busier next year with additional responsibilities in the region and state organizations. Trying to hold off additional national responsibilities for another couple of years until I get the state under control and better organized.

  139. wafan April 18, 2010 5:03 am

Bravissimo to the ‘Bows, and SoftBows!

Whoo-hoo!!! All that hard work is paying off.

    ‘Atta-way!!!!!

  140. wafan April 18, 2010 5:07 am

Sounds like everyone who attended did the PT (Practice Tailgate) enjoyed themselves. Looks like the Tsai-kos have not lost their touch.

Hey, when was the last time some of Tsai-kos really enjoyed the other kind of PT?

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  141. wafan April 18, 2010 5:14 am

Too bad about Satele. Dang, so sad how much those incompetent few screwed up the kids — what is really galling is their ineptitude is still being felt. Hope their disgusting stench will leave the Warriors and ‘Bows soon!

  142. wafan April 18, 2010 5:16 am

    Any word, Nana Liz?

    For Michele . . .

    Push ’em out!
    Push ’em out!
    Waaaaaaaaaaay out!!!

    Push ’em out!
    Push ’em out!
    Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa out!!!

  143. d1島 April 18, 2010 5:35 am

    Great Morning All!

Apologies to Tsaiko Therapist for not mentioning her appearance at the PracticeGate earlier. 😳

    It was nice meeting you!

  144. d1島 April 18, 2010 5:38 am

It’ll be really interesting if, and when, all the mystery surrounding Moniz’ “personal leave” is cleared up…hope his return is sooner than later.

  145. Annoddah Dave April 18, 2010 5:50 am

    ST and Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Thanks for the tix to the first game of the double header Wahine Softball game. Saw you, slugger, and koakane but the seats were so far away next to the TV camera. The crowd was pretty packed in so did not have a chance to come over to the more expensive seats to say hi!

  146. expat April 18, 2010 6:00 am

I don’t know why I believed the UCSB announcer when he said that UH would be on the road “no matter what else happens.”. Good to hear that they will be at home. No other team has quite the same home court advantage.

  147. Bigislandkurt April 18, 2010 6:34 am

Wow. I’m reading into the phrase “Moniz WILL be allowed to rejoin the team.” After all these days of defending Mo and trying to beat back the speculators, it sure sounds from the way this line was written that #17 messed up.

    BIK

  148. Bulla April 18, 2010 7:48 am

    #132 Protector,

yes that was the older brother of ‘the beast’; easy to distinguish, he has all the tatoos…..he came down to ‘spock’ his brother ‘doing his thang…’ . Ryan is grateful for the reps he gets, and makes the best of it…….funny, like watching a raging bull pawing the ground and snorting on the sidelines, haha. 🙂

you crack me up, they probably gave you my reserved tickets….so nice watching the game from those corporate boxes, and the service…impeccable 🙂

    Good morning!

Hope MsLiz’ mo’opuna has joined us outside of his momma.

Those Easton ‘boys’ are a good looking bunch! Fun to see Lewis Walker make that interception yesterday. No one else was yelling in the bleachers except me, though. Shy HS juniors in the stands.

Great to hear that Moniz will rejoin the team.

Why isn’t the volleyball match being broadcast?

    kurt, read that too.

Sorry about Satele, I bet he gets his chance in the NFL though. It’s good to have depth but we need the younger players to get there too.

Wow. I’m reading into the phrase “Moniz WILL be allowed to rejoin the team.” After all these days of defending Mo and trying to beat back the speculators, it sure sounds from the way this line was written that #17 messed up.
