Close to 1,000 tonight in Carey Arena for the 20-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-23 UH win.
Hawaii used 11 of the 15 on the travel roster. Colton Cowell misses the match with that injury suffered against Harvard (believe it’s a strained calf muscle).
Warriors had trouble in serve-receive, gave up 9 aces to the Flyers, 5 by Kyle Bugee, but also dealt 9 aces, 4 by Patrick Gasman and Rado Parapunov. Parapunov with 22 kills. Freshman Chaz Galloway 8-1-19, Gasman 7-1-14. Gasman with six blocks of the Warriors’ 11. Flyers with 15.5 blocks.

Lewis athletics apologized after the match for its student broadcasters’ comments between Sets 1 and 2, when they said: “I can’t believe they’re called the Rainbow Warriors, to be honest. The worst name I’ve ever heard of any team, in the history of human existence.”

FINAL: No. 1 Hawaii drops its first set of the year, but turns to reserves like Chaz Galloway and Brett Sheward to spark the team combined with a 22-kill performance from Rado Parapunov to battle back and beat No. 5 Lewis in four, 20-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-23 in Romeoville, Ill.
Set 4: Hawaii 25, Lewis 23
5:16: Flyers turn back one match point with the sideout … QUICK SET from Brett Sheward to Patrick Gasman and that’s it, folks.
5:14: MATCH POINT Hawaii on a Gasman kill he didn’t totally get a full swing on.
5:11: Flyers back within two, 21-19. Can the ‘Bows close this out in 4?
5:05: Lewis briefly gets back within two points on a couple of UH net violations but Gasman continues to plug away and UH leads 19-15.
5:03: Rado with kills No. 20 and 21 tonight to stake UH to a 15-11 lead.
5:00: Galloway supplying some real energy. He rises from the back row and goes off the block, now has six kills on .400 hitting. Timeout Lewis UH leading 13-9.
4:56: Sheward continues to run the show and seems to be doing a very able job at it. UH takes a 10-7 lead in Set 4 on back-to-back aces by Patrick Gasman. He’s also got four aces now.
4:53: “Parapuno” with his fourth ace to give UH a 5-3 lead.
4:46: Tip of the cap to backup setter Brett Sheward, who came in to run the show as UH rallied in that set. “Shewie” with four assists.
Set 3: Hawaii 26, Lewis 24
4:45: UH is FIRED UP after Parapunov and Rosenfeld come up with a clutch block to take the set. ‘Bows rallied like mad to take that set and go up 2-1 overall. Filip Humler had a nice roof a couple points prior, as well.
4:44: Rainbow Warriors have come all the way back from down 19-12 to have set point, 25-24.
4:40: UH surging late in this set. Back to back kills by Parapunov and UH is within 23-22. TIMEOUT Flyers.
4:34: Parapunov up to eight hitting errors, dropping his average to .212. It’s 20-16 Lewis after UH narrows the gap a little.
4:26: UH up against it now, trailing 14-9 here in Set 3. As the Lewis announcer says with gusto, “all the momentum with the Flyers right now.”
4:23: FIVE aces for Kyle Bugee during this seven-point run for Lewis. Yikes.
4:20: Five straight points for Lewis, which takes a 7-6 lead on back-to-back aces. Wade calls timeout at last.
4:17: It’s a 6-2 ‘Bows lead to open Set 3. UH appears to have found something.
4:16: Third set underway. Galloway (three kills, 11 swings) getting some extended run today.
4:12: Something to watch: UH getting out-blocked 7.5-4.5 through two sets.
Set 2: Hawaii 25, Lewis 23
4:05: Parapunov PUTS IT DOWN for his 14th kill today, a new season high, and more importantly ties the match at 1-1 overall.
4:03: Lewis has turned back two UH set points. Parapunov just got roofed on the second.
4:01: Galloway, Parapunov and Rosenfeld combine on a triple block to set up set point. Timeout Flyers.
3:58: Timeout wade after a Galloway overpass allows Lewis to get within 23-20.
3:57: Max Rosenfeld comes in and puts down an overpass, then Parapunov punishes his 13th kill of the night, tying his season high. Have a feeling he’s going WAY behind that. UH 23-18.
3:55: Lewis has to call for time trailing 20-17. Some of the pep has been taken out of the Lewis play-by-play guy’s step.
3:51: Parapunov with 11 kills while the rest of UH combined has nine. Rainbow Warriors up 18-17.
3:48: Lewis punishes another UH free ball over and it’s 13-all.
3:44: UH earns its first two-point lead of the match and they seem to have righted themselves up 11-9.
3:41: Flyers jump out 3-0 to open Set 2 but UH has battled back and it’s 7-7. Parapunov up to eight kills on 11 swings, hitting .727.
3:36: Freshman Chaz Galloway gets a start at OH for Set 2. Wade apparently looking to spark his team.
3:35 p.m.: Between sets, Lewis play-by-play guy apparently doesn’t realize he’s got a hot mic. “I can’t believe they’re called the Rainbow Warriors. The worst name in human existence,” he says. Well then. Shots fired.
Set 1: Lewis 25, Hawaii 20
3:32: That’s all she wrote in Set 1 as Lewis runs away with the frame, dealing UH its first set setback of the season. Three aces for the Flyers and none for UH, and six service errors for the ‘Bows to five for Lewis. Can UH respond minus Cowell in the lineup?
3:27: Another Lewis ACE and it’s a four-point Flyers lead late in Set 1, 22-18. Timeout Wade. No one had put up more than 20 against UH in its season-opening five-match homestand.
3:20: Timeout Charlie Wade after a careless dump-over was stuffed right back to give the Flyers a 16-14 lead.
3:19: Rado Parapunov is THE go-to offense with Cowell out today. He’s got five kills among UH’s first 14 points. Lewis up by one.
3:17: An ace gives Lewis its first lead at 12-11.
3:14: Teams still siding out against each other every time. No one can get a two-point lead so far.
3:11: James Anastassiades gets the start in Cowell’s place for the second straight match. Rainbows and Flyers going point for point so far, 6-6.
3:06: Colton Cowell is NOT in the starting lineup today, could be an apparent lingering calf issue.

Thankful for other successful and exciting UH teams to keep the mind off of dismal football news.
Luckily I don’t care for football. I am just an avid volleyball fan. I still didn’t contact the athletic director about TV carrier negotiations as Matlin is so occupied now with selecting a new football coach. Once the decision is made, I can request him to select a carrier that would not restrict viewing to fans on other islands if they can’t get cable. Good that I can watch the matches live this weekend and greatly look forward to viewing them.
2. don’t know if Matlin currently is in Hawaii. When I spoke with him Tuesday, he was leaving on a plane.
but he does get email so I would suggest you contact him. He welcomes input in his decision making.
Looking forward to the Lewis match in a few minutes. Thinking about how fortunate we are to live in the age of broadband where games are easily streamable.

Yes, I tried several times to access Cindy’s link on the top. It came up with the screen of the match and an arrow and I clicked the arrow in the middle but nothing happened. I am just stomped!

Holy crap…this team saved their skins by taking a 2-1 set lead. Went to extras, and finished off on a block on Coenen. Hopefully, Hawaii can take this small shift of momentum and bring it in the 4th. Doesn’t matter if they do it in ugly fashion, all I’m hoping for is a W, that is literally it.

I’m dying laughing from these commentators. They still don’t know that they aren’t off air. Good for the uncles and aunties that told them off for saying the rainbow warriors are a stupid name.
I do think that without Colton providing offense in the front row and offense in the back with the bick it’s just harder to get a point for UH. The way that set ended was amazing.
They was a great helicopter move by Galloway to get the 17th point. Btw, the announcers have now pronounced Charlie Wades name as Charlie Ward. It’s never ending with these guys.

Whew, so glad we got a win. I knew that with the loss of Colton in the lineup, they would have a much tougher match. I saw Lewis play BYU and even though they lost in four sets, they were pretty impressive. It’s great to see the backup players come in and really contribute. Galloway and Sheward did a really good job. That third set comeback is worth watching again. I thought the bows were out of it for sure, but they came back with block to end it for a 2-1 sets lead. On to Loyola. Glad that’s on ESPN 3. Should be a better stream.
Someone should call Lewis Athletics and tell them that their announcers are inappropriate.
It was a great win. Playing in enemy territory. Having to fly a long ways. Pulling out set 3 shows how they are.
Why worry about the announcers? Just mute the audio. I do that all the time.
38. I think someone did call the Lewis Athletic Dept to complain about what the announcers said about the Rainbow Warrior name. They mentioned it between sets 3 and 4. I think someone even mentioned how awful their pronunciations were because one of the guys mentioned having to look at the pronunciation sheet again.
Possible upset on ESPN 3 right now. UC San Diego up a set and leading second against UCLA. Matautia playing but Gyimah out.

I thought I was seeing things, but seeing UCSD beat UCLA has got to be the most jaw-dropping game I have seen. But yeah, seeing George Mason beat Pepperdine has got to be a shocker. Wow…the MVB competition is literally becoming more and more ridiculous, especially with all the random upsets early on. I’m really curious to see how well this pans out once everybody gets started into conference play.

49. I am with you on that. In UCSD’s case they have a Transfer who is making a difference and also as they upgrade to DI to come into the Big West for all sports in 2021 the overall athletic department has more money.
Good tough road win for the men. Interesting to see coach Wade go with the backup setter. Curious to know if Gage can set at all? If he has half the hands his brother had it might be wise to use such skill. It seems our out of system setting is worse than last year, and show what a true talent Joe Worsley was.
I too had trouble playing the video, using chrome browser. Worked fine when I switched over to Safari though. Also, I tried to look for the game in their archive and couldn’t find it. Do you know if they are planning to post it, or shelve it due to the inappropriate comments? lol
yep, it showed tonight that those high sets are not effective when facing a tall and good blocking team like lewis. they can just camp out and wait for the hit. the other setter was better, making more quick sets. they should go back to the quick set, it will get them to the national championship.

UCSD is a much better team this year. They are legit.
The Lewis announcers were bad, so bad that it was entertaining. Not only did they not know they had hot mics, they didn’t know when the camera was on them. Who knew there were so many ways to pronounce Parapunov. And when the color guy started seriously picking his nose while commenting, I almost lost it. But when he flicked it, that was awesome.
Regarding the Lewis broadcast. Even if this is a student run thing, they need to take pride in their work and not be fooling around.
They either need to do it like it’s their job or don’t do it at all. They kind of making a joke of the broadcast. If I was their professor, they get an F – .
Big kudos to Rado tonight and the team overall for a big victory. On paper Lewis is the toughest opponent the Warriors have to face on this road trip. Also Hawaii was without Cowell which was a big loss as his presence in all facets of the game is vital for the team. It forced Hawaii to have to change setters and change their offensive scheme.
As much as I criticize Rado sometimes, no question he was money tonight. His serving and key kills were what kept UH in it- he proved tonight he was a legit POY candidate.
Lewis was tough. They serve the ball effectively and their setter does an excellent job at spreading the ball. Two big AA and gritty defense. They will probably win the MIVA and may play UH again if both make the NCAAs. That said they easily could have won sets 2-4 as well, especially set 3. Anyway, I’ll digress here. But one more thing I want to say is the fact that Hawaii was down and tested with their backs against the wall, AND the fact they made it through that, I’m sure it gives the team confidence they’ll need if they want to win it all.
#54. You shouldn’t be as quick and ignorant to make judgement on Hawaii’s setting. Thelle proved throughout the offseason and early practices that he is the starting setter.
Tonight the Warriors were without Cowell, who for all intents and purposes would’ve been able to bury those high balls to the outside. If Cowell is out again, a faster offense may be more appropriate for the reserve hitters coming who may not be able to effectively work well with Thelle’s high ball sets.
Having said that, it was a smart move by Wade to change the Setters and therefore the overall offensive scheme.
53. they aren’t going to try to convert the best libero in the country into a setter. They have have 3 guys who are very good and provide them options. Players still adjusting to it not being Worsley. He is missed for sure but this is this season and he isn’t the setter.
