It was a banner night for No. 1 LSU and Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Joe Burrow.

Burrow slung five touchdown passes and ran for one more as LSU defeated No. 3 Clemson 42-25 in the College Football Playoff championship on Monday night.

In the process, he broke former Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan’s records for passing touchdowns (58) and touchdowns responsible for (63) from the 2006 season. Burrow, who entered the night with 55 passing TDs and 59 responsible for, tied Brennan in both marks in the second quarter. He found Thaddeus Moss again in the third quarter to pass Brennan in both categories.

Burrow finished the night with 60 passing touchdowns and 65 touchdowns responsible for. He did it in 15 games played for the unbeaten Tigers. Brennan set his marks with 14 games played.

Something else notable for UH football from the national title game on Monday night: Former Hawaii defensive coordinator Dave Aranda (2008-11), one of the most prominent assistant coaches (and the highest paid at $2.5M a year) in the country as LSU’s associate head coach and defensive coordinator, raised the trophy. It capped a meteoric rise up the college coaching ranks as an assistant; he’d been at LSU before that, with stops at Wisconsin and Utah State.

I dunno what’s worse—that it all happened in threes or that UH-M has it own sports equivalent of an enduring Greek tragedy.

Remember when Hawai’i fans were really critical of Dave Aranda here, a first year DC under Coach Mac? Congratulations, Coach Aranda, on your achievement!
