Hawaii women’s volleyball: Rainbow Wahine sign transfer setter Mylana Byrd
Hawaii has signed 6-2 setter Mylana Byrd, who is transferring from Alabama.
She is enrolling at UH this spring and will have two seasons to play beginning in fall.

In her two seasons at Alabama, Byrd played in 158 total sets with 844 assists, 81 digs, 80 total blocks (15-solo/65-block assist), and 71 kills. As a freshman, she played in all 32 matches for the Crimson Tide. As a sophomore, she posted a career-high 38 assists in a four-set win over NC State.
The 2018 graduate of Episcopal High (Houston) was a team captain as a senior and helped to lead the Knights to a Southwest Preparatory Conference title in 2017. Byrd helped her club team (Absolute Volleyball Academy) to appearances in the Lone Star Regionals in both 2014 and ’16. She was named to Houston’s “Top Volleyballers” list in 2016.
“We are very excited to have a setter of Mylana’s caliber join our Rainbow Wahine ‘ohana,” Wahine caoch Robyn Ah Mow said. “The moment we started the recruiting process with Mylana, we knew she would fit our gym culture and what we are continuing to build here in Manoa. Mylana knows what it takes to set at a high level and has done so for the past two seasons in the SEC. She brings experience and size that will make an immediate impact the moment we begin spring training.”

If this setter works out it could strengthen our team and give Robin more options with the frosh setter she recruited out of Texas.
She might have played her volleyball at Alabama but she is from Texas so our Texas pipeline is really pumping.
Too bad Georgia Via decided not to come. A quarter of the team would be made up of Texans if Via comes and Mia Johnson follows thru on her commitment.

Finally the team is set with this second setter. Four from Texas, never expected this. I guess when these young ladies decides to come play for Hawaii the coaches makes clear whats expected of them. I really like the idea of the coaching staff bringing in players from all over the country and over seas. Sports, what a way to build friendships around the world.
it appears the Robyn will be running the same offense as last year with two setters and maybe using byrd as a hitter when not setting similar to Norene. This worked well for them even though it was an emergency action. however, I still believe that a one setter is better since different setters set differently causing the hitters to adjust.

With the Texas flavor, maybe a spring scrimmage with the Longhorns?
IMHO I think that in maybe 2 years, the Wahine can win another NCAA Championship. The improvements and quality of the recruits from 2019 and the upcoming 2020 class, have addressed the weaknesses of the team and are being strengthened. Good job by coahes Robyn and Angelica. Look forwarf to another amazing season in 2020! GO BOWS!
Regarding Via…she was an invited walk on so I don’t think there will be any formal announcement or anything like that to confirm her not coming here but there are some “obvious” signs of that.
She have removed her picture of her wearing the UH shirt. i also think she changed that heading on her IG and have removed all reference to Hawaii. Not sure why she would do such a thing if she was still coming.

17. I too am excited about the future, but everyone else is trying to do the same. I don’t require that they win. It’s enough that they are competitive with everyone else and depending on the breaks of the game, can win. I assume the Nebraska game gave the coaching staff a pretty good homework sheet.
Alabama had a new coach for 2019, Lindsey Devine, who had a successful 16-year head coaching career at East Tennessee State before accepting the HC position at Alabama. Starting her first year at Alabama, she had 19 players on her roster last year. 7 returning players are currently listed on their 2020 roster. Seems like there was a mass exodus at Alabama
#20. Woah! That’s a large exodus. I noticed that Mylana didn’t play much last year. Hence the transfer. Also, I read her Q&A. Seems she started off as a hitter and switched to setter later in high school. Maybe that’s why she transferred all the way here to Hawai’i, to learn from Robyn?
Hope Kate Lange doesn’t decommit. These students are so young you don’t know what’s going through their mind. All the freshmen last season seem to handle not playing at times and having to battle for playing time. So Coach Robyn must be giving them the reality of college VB up front.

Now Jolie is back in action, hopefully, less burden on Hana in front row, and time for Hana to get back to full rotation with back row pounding as in pre-season 2019… Pre-season belongs to teams with strong in offence. Key players, Jolie, Hanna. BVS, two MBs are equally responsible to bring/drive others and new comers to acceptable levels to build a useful squad for 2020…
Glad to see so many indoor crossovers, can only help their indoor game. I can’t wait for when a sandbow become an indoor bow. The chances are less but one can hope.
With Krug giving up indoor, does this mean that another scholarship is available? or was she a walk on?
