New practice time Saturday
Saturday’s practice — which will involve a scrimmage — has been moved to 1:30 p.m. It was originally scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Head coach Greg McMackin said more than 100 football prospects will participate in UH’s Junior Day Saturday at the UH athletic complex.
Tbe prospects — and their parents — were invited by their high school coaches. The prospects will get a tour of the school, meet with academic counselors and UH coaches, and participate in a Q&A with select UH football players. For instance, nickelback Richard Torres will answer questions about the walk-on program (he is now on scholarship), and safety Mike Wadsworth will discuss the adjustment freshmen will face.
Because this is considered an unofficial visit, the prospects and their parents must pay for their own meals and expenses.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Eye black with messages and wedge blocks will be banned from college football this fall, and taunting in the field of play will start costing teams points in 2011.
On Thursday, the NCAA’s Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved the three rules changes.
One year after the NFL banned wedge blocking on kickoffs because of safety concerns, the NCAA followed the lead. The new rule says that when the team receiving a kickoff has more than two players standing within two yards of one another, shoulder to shoulder, it will be assessed a 15-yard penalty — even if there is no contact between the teams.
The reason: NCAA studies have shown that 20 percent of all injuries occurring on kickoffs result in concussions.

no wedge blocking? will it mean less tds of kickoff returns? what about punts? i know its hard to form a wedge on punts, but 2 players blocking side by side is possible. safety first. maybe they should play touch or flag football. wait a minute….. then no pads……..

no wedge blocking may result in kick returners getting more injuries. i hope we are practicing with several kick returners as we may need all of them during the season. usually kick returners are gifted receivers or dbacks, and are usually starters at their “real” positions. This may force teams to follow some nfl teams and recruit exclusive returners, being emergency backups at on field positions. i know we got the freshman guy from florida coming in. maybe now his name just elevated on the dept chart without even enrolling in school.

I can see it now. USC scores a go ahead touchdown with 2:34 left in the game against UH. Kick off results in a 102 yard touchdown for UH. Touchdown called back because of new wedge blocking rule. Replays show that 2 Warriors went for the same USC player. Just so happens a 3rd UH player was in the area not facing the same player being blocked, but obviously looking at another player to block. UH loses, thus securing the “reputation” of USC and the PAC 10. UH players and fans are heart broken inspite of their “moral” victory.

I like what I read in Ferd’s article about the D devoting time to keep their eyes on the ball & look for the opportunity to strip it or make an interception.

#23d1. I was there. Jeff Duva and co. That’s what I was thinking of when I wrote of the moral victory.
Given the circumstances of the Warrior practice time change, I can’t make it to the Spring Practice T-Gate. My meeting won’t be over until 10:30 so I wouldn’t be able to get to the T-Gate site until close to noon since I’ll be coming by bus.
Instead, I’ll bring the dessert to the Softbows game and pass it out there. Will make it neat & easy to eat and will also have some paper towels.

A high school in Texas will be getting a new $60 million stadium…I’ve seen a lot of high school stadiums in Texas that were amazing, but this one will probably be nicer than some college stadiums. It must be nice to have money to throw around–$55 million or so for a performing arts auditorium, 600+ band members, etc.
They have been talking about the taunting rule for over a year now…it won’t affect this season, but it will be interesting to see if it changes the outcomes of any 2011 games.

Interesting rules changes this year. The taunting seems fair. I can see problems with interpreting the wedge block.
Kick off coverage hones in on ball carrier and the blockers with backs to the ball carrier need to be aware if where he is because if they too close, they’ll be called for it?
Blockers will get in position based of the lanes the coverage team takes or return team play is designed to go. The spacing will be hard to make a call on.
Unless as long as the return team don’t “hold hands” then ok?..Might make “open season” on return guys and they will be victims of concussions because of full on hits.

In trying to limit the incidences of concussions, this seems to focus the issue on one player – the returner!
It is sad that a California QB recruit would have watched so many UH games and then not be interested in UH…he’ll probably go to a Pac-10 school anyway, but his high school has a lot of good recruits and it would have been nice for his exposure to UH football to help with recruiting.
Connor Preston has been offered a scholarship by June Jones to SMU. Per Ponyfans, he already has taken two unofficial visits to the SMU campus. If he likes the run and shoot, he probably thinking UH or June Jones, of the two, I think he picks June Jones

Coach Rolo has got to make his own reputation as far as developing qb’s in the r and s offense. He is up and coming and I think he will be a known entity in due time. Nothing a few quality wins to get a kids attention. Coach Rolo and the team need to build their own program and it takes some time to do that.
Coach Jones learned from the master and has been able to implement his offense in the nfl and at other destinations. Anyone would want to learn from the master yeah?

Wedge blocking happens on kick offs with the team receiving the ball.
As the ball is kicked off players on the receiving team fall back about ten yards to a predetermined spot on the field and form an inverted triangle with the point being the ball carrier. The wedge players are shoulder to shoulder/thigh measuring out from the middle of the wedge and they move forward on command of the ball carrier to provide a wall of blocking. As the wedge moves forward the ball carrier follows the wedge and he waits for a seam to open and then makes a move up field.
The real danger in wedge blocking is the other team uses ‘wedge buster’s. These players often launch themselves into the wedge and players on either team are in danger of concussions or hip/leg/ankle injuries.
For those of you that go back to Honolulu Stadium days my teammate Golden Richards suffered a serious knee injury in the UH Vs Grambling game. As the wedge formed up one of the Grambling players came down the field and hit an offensive lineman forming up the wedge so hard he was knocked back into the ball carrier (Richards).
In my grandfather’s day (U of Chicago) the wedge was formed by interlocking arms, but that technique was ruled out years ago.

The first thing that jumps out to me out of all of this is not Jessica Iwata’s insane stats or the sense of relief I feel seeing Amanda Taualii back up there in hitting % again, but it’s Parnaby’s ERA.
The most ideal thing and the one thing expected out of Parnaby in the pre season is to provide another stable pitcher to take the pressure of Ricketts. Before the WAC season started I wrote that pitching wouldn’t be a concern and in reality when you look at the games, it hasn’t been thus far as Stephanie Ricketts is again proving to be the work horse that I thought she needed to be. I really had to believe in her when some wrote her off and wanted Parnaby to grab the “ace” spot. Again, this proves experience counts for a lot.
I am NOT trying to single out Parnaby as I STILL believe she is a good pitcher but the unmeasurable elements of WAC play and travel are new to her despite her decorated past as a very young, but experienced pitcher on the international level. International play tends to be “better” than what some think of WAC softball, but it’s also different in other ways and on the stat sheet we are seeing this here as her numbers have ballooned from what it was against the likes of CAL, DePaul, Lipscomb, Troy etc…
If anything this further proves that Ricketts is our pitcher and Parnaby is still an effective pitcher if the circumstance is right for her to start or relieve Ricketts when the time comes. Still I see Coolen using Parnaby as a starter for the second game of a series as the WAC season winds down and there is nothing wrong with that.
As for the hitting, the ACES only get better starting tomorrow. New fans to the Wahine need to enjoy this new found popularity, but need to be aware of what lies ahead of us. Meghan Krieg is good, damn good and in a sport where one player can dominate an entire team, an upset of the LaTechsters over the Wahine should NOT be looked at as “impossible” regardless of the way our batting order has produced. It’s going to be nothing new at all to the Wahine as they (LaTech) will get Krieg to pitch all over the zone and try to frustrate the Wahine with a barrage of outside pitches and change-ups. We’ve struggled with that before and it has cost us sweeps of series and even losing a few series.

Hey guys. Talking about Golden Richards and Semeri Ulufale, I used to watch all UH sports in the HA since I was very young. Started attending the football games as soon as my friends and I started to drive. Went to the Termite Palace to watch Levi Stanley, Paul “Sumo” Lee, Hal Stringert, etc. Mr. Weir and anyone else, can you guys publish some stories of the older players so us old farts can recollectioning. Who was that running back that transfered from Oklahoma. I think he was a third or fourth stringer at Okla.. In those days, I don’t think there was any restrictions as to how many scholarships a school could have. Big schools would have, like, 185 scholarships, would pay players to watch the grass grow to a certain length, then tell somebody, so that someone else could mow the field. If they signed that many to scholarships, even if that player didn’t play, at least he didn’t play against them. The player that I’m thinking of split time with someone (Jeff Sydner?) and I think he started his second year at UH gaining a lot of yards (over 1000?). Help me remember please.

In the old Honolulu Stadium, the fans were so close to the action that a “liquid-courage”-induced fan once challenged Larry Scherer to meet under the stands after a game to “discuss” his effort in the game.
I believe it was Corky who immortalized the “meeting” by drawing the player with his helmet on and the fan holding his “souveneir” busted fist!
mistake…dr. larry sherrer is an ophthalmologist in kauai.
larry sherrer was the first 1000 yd man in 1972. he had brief stint with the ny giants.
jeff sydnew played under wags in 1991. was drafted in the 6th round by the eagles and had a four year career in the nfl. primarily as a pr/kr/wr.
semeri ulufale….now that is a name from the past. anyone remember the exchange between him and then coach john wilbur on the sidelines during a game? i swear i saw wilbur punch the side of semeri’s helmet in the heated exchange, and semeri started busting a gut laughing…that upset wilbur more, so he was going to kich semeri and semeri rushed him. they were separated and were still yelling at each other……..next kickoff, semeri blows the wedge up, makes the tackle, comes off the field and wilbur hugs him….

semeri used to drive an old beat up volkswagen beetle when we were in school at UH…..it was raining…..he didn’t want to get wet, so he drove from Sinclair to Campus Center Sundry Store, 2 Snickers and a soda, and drove down the 3 flights of stairs below campus center….now you know why they have yellow barricade poles above campus center walkways……
Good evening Tsaiko Nation, Semeri Ulufale was my apartment neighbor 3 doors down in Makiki as he and Tom Tueni were roomates. These 2 defensive stand out were some mean and fierce linemen as they would cause havoc to ANY offensive line and “PUNISH” ball carriers to the fullest in which IF they got up they felt the hurt by these outstanding samoans.
Ulufale was a GREAT guy and funny to be around with as his passion for drinking beer was amazing as he and Tueni could go through 24 cans as if it was nothing. Backgammon you dare not win as you would not leave their apartment until you “drink bra” or plenty of stink eye was coming your way. Both Rainbow Warriors got into a mess in wakiki one night as they tore up a bar a week before a big WAC game as Tomey had his hands filled in keeping both linemen academically elgible and out of off field trouble but somehow Tomey made it happen with these two characters.
Farrington H.S. was Ulufale pride and joy as he would often wear his lettermens jacket around our Apartment and show you his nose tackle stance as you would not want to get nose tackle with him as he was a punishing linemen and had NO FEAR of hitting or being hit !
Sadly, Steven Tsai told me Ulufale died of a brain tumor as I was so sadden to hear of his death. A GREAT defensive linemen during the mid 70’s and early 80’s that played the 3-4 defense with strength and quickness. Saw Tom in Pearl City back in 2000 he was married and had a boy as we hugged and share comraderie and fellowship.
RIP Semeri Ulufale as NO one could match his intensity on the field, backgammon or drinking beer !

College of Southern Idaho redshirt freshman Josten Thomas has signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of Hawaii. A versatile 6-foot-7 forward, Thomas led CSI in scoring and rebounding this season. He averaged 15.3 points and 8.2 boards for the 20-12 Golden Eagles.
At Hawaii, Thomas will play for former CSI head coach Gib Arnold, who was named the Warriors head coach March 20.

No it wasn’t Larry Shearer. Larry, I think, played for Dave Holmes. Went to the Hula Bowl when it was THE college football allstar game. Didn’t play much. I thin he carried the ball 1 or 2 times. The person that I’m thinking of played much later that Larry.

I asked about slugging % on the other site. Now can figure out Majam’s and Iwata’s OPS #, which is on base % + slugging %, which is a stat created by Bill James for baseball. Gives you an idea of how their nos. compare.
Per Wikipedia, On-base plus slugging (OPS) is a sabermetric baseball statistic calculated as the sum of a player’s on-base percentage and slugging percentage. The ability of a player to both get on base and to hit for power, two important hitting skills, are represented. This makes an especially effective way of measuring the player’s offensive worth. if talented players continue to commit to UH, Coach Gib may just have to cancel one or more scholarships to current roster players – i believe this may be a good thing as it brings home the point for all players that scholarships are truly an annual ritual.

re: Eye black with messages. I glanced over the messages and didn’t see this one addressed. You know the NCAA is quitely calling it the Tebow Rule. Why? because the ACLU and other groups protested that he had biblical passages (like 3:6 or something like that) – said they found it offensive. Shame that groups spend money on things like this but the protect a group that calls itself a church that will hold up signs at funerals saying “Thank God for Dead Soldiers” and call it free speech.

I can’t even recall the last time I saw a pitcher, either in person, TV, or via live stats, pitch an entire series.
For the life of me, I can’t even recall how many series Ricketts did last season by herself, if any at all, when all we really had was her and Gonzalez and Baughman was hurt.
Still at some point that wrist and forearm are gonna give way to plain old-fashioned fatigue.
For some reason, I don’t see Krieg getting all three “nods” though. I have a sinking feeling will see her for the first two games and then the other pitcher for the 3rd.

McKinley Reynolds, TE played under Don King. Joe McReynolds played for either Dave Holmes or Larry Price. Time has elapsed and the memory is a little hazy. All I know is that under Holmes, UH had gold helmets, green jerseys w/ gold numerals, and gold pants. Ah, those were the days. We were so young then, skinny, lots of hair, full of sex drive. Now, we just read the morning paper, and drink our senior coffee at McDonald’s for 63 cents, free re-fills, w/ little hair, and E.D. Definitely, no problems like Tiger Woods.

mckinley reynolds was primarily a running back who also filled in at tight end on occasion. tough as nails. i thought he came via the military, perhaps the marine corps.
he also tried out and made the basketball team. he eventually got some minutes and at 6’3″ would push guys out of the way and grab his share of rebounds and garbage shots.
hahaaha…derek. although i am not yet ready for the mcdonald’s coffee hour, i do recall many of the stuff you refer to.
Anyone has seen this kid play at all last year? So far, no one is courting him yet. If this kid is going under the radar, I hope UH takes a good look at this kid. His size alone, I think, should draw some D1 interest. Hope he is one of the 100 plus juniors this sat.

If a student athlete wants to show their religious pride and preference then I see nothing wrong with it.
I was a yearbook editor in my senior year and we had quite the issue with senior quotes. It was a quote you could have under your senior photo in the yearbook. There have been real funny ones in the past, the best one was someone placed this under their own photo: “Have you seen this child? Missing since 1991”. 😆
Anyway, I’m digressing, there were several issues that stemmed from some other high school’s yearbook on the mainland that sent Jostens in a frenzy and went on “lockdown” with regards to what is printed in their yearbooks.
So we did away with senior quotes and it was the first time EVER in PCHS history I think. I’m not sure if they have it to this day.
Anyway, it was DUMB and prior to that we were screening the messages anyway, but then you get into this gray area where people get to decide what is deemed “acceptable”.
On one hand there is no way to make it fair if a few are worried about offending some people.
The IDEAL situation is for those people to pull the centipede out of their okole.

Kazz Danielle Lawrie finished last season 42-8. Lots of games, lots of innings, she had to deliver at the regional, super regional and world series to reach those numbers
Biscotti and Elroy were seniors when I was a junior.
Elroy of course went on to a stellar career in physical therapy ( we faced each other as coaches in a Football State Semi finals, Farrington vs Punahou) with Coach Price calling the game alongside the grandson of Sr. Leahey who called some of our games) . Mike is now GM of Hoakalei Golf Course in Ewa
We played against Cal Lutheran out of Thousand Oaks. They had a running back named Hank ‘Howitzer’ Bauer. He went on to a career with the Chargers as a practice running back but a starter on kickoffs as the ‘wedge buster’. Took a serious number of hits that are telling these days as he calls Charger games as the ‘color commentator’.
Several years ago ran into Leitu Karnuth.

Kazz UH is fortunate in that Coolen in willing to use two starters to keep the arms fresh.
In 2009 Lawrie with a 42-8 record for the 51-12 UDUB National Champs pitched in 352.2 innings, with 521 Ks and 21 shutouts. So obviously, she wasn’t used in possibly 13 rotations or did not figure in the decision in 13 games. Her opponent in the championship game, Stacey Nelson, Florida, finished with a 41-5 record.
Ashley Chinn who Ko’d 10 or 12 wahine in their first game is 6-1, with only 33 innings pitched all season, the freshman took over and she has pitched in DH for Stanford, her record is 22-5 for the 30-6 Cardinal.
as you can see, the high profile teams will use the ace as often as possible. So I hope to see Krieg in all three games, or the La Tech coach has brought in another ace.

Can’t comment on Gouveia, but as for Aikman, I thought he was a “stiff” at OU. He was just plain awful and unimpressive. If I recall, he was also forgettable at the Hula Bowl wasn’t it? I didn’t pay attention as he went to the pros. When I saw him about 2 years later, my jaw dropped. He was poised, efficient & Pro-Bowl caliber. To me, it was the his QB coach in the pros that should get the kudos for developing Aikman into the terrific player he became. I wouldn’t have blamed
Tomey for passing on him (at the time).

Looking back at La Tech’s 3 game series, Krieg usually pitches 2 out of the 3. Their #2 hasn’t been near what Krieg has been, but 2/3 has been the coach’s pattern. I guess every pitcher is different. Some have the stamina to throw a lot and some don’t. And yes, throwing underhand is easier on the arm/shoulder, but it still must be tiring to drive off the mound.
Lots of interesting scenarios whetting the fans’ appetites. Example…if the Wahine manage to beat Krieg in the first game, will the La Tech coach bring Krieg back in game #2 if the #2 pitcher gets in trouble? Hmmm

Sorry guys and gals. I’ve been off for a while. Thanks for bringing back the memories of years past. The rb that transfered from Okl. may have been during the Greg Pruitt era. He wasn’t very big but was shifty and fast. I know he played at UH with another great running back. Maybe it was Regis Grice. Did he transfer from Okla? I thought it was during Jeff Sydner’s time, but it could have also been Gary Allen’s era. Kurt Gouveia’s lost hurt especially since he wanted to play for UH but was never considered. Didn’t Wadsley Abihai have a brother Westley also playing for UH? Remember Jeris White?
Casey Ortiz and June Jones played during the same time. UH beat Washington in Wash. with Ortiz and Aaron Brown wr. I think Ortiz played 1 year and June transfered to Portland State. I remember UH also beat Utah at home. I think it was something like 15-12 or 9-7. All field goals for UH. Utah had a wide receiver/ kick returner that was one of the top players in the nation. He went on to the NFL, but wasn’t as big of an impact. Keep the old times coming. Thanks everyone but I don’t know if its making me feel younger or just old.

There are really quite a few more such volumes after the close of the anime, 14 to be precise. A great deal of the troubles with the anime ending was, in addition to the regular 90s Gainax budget troubles, the mangaka was boring and didn’t want the anime to vary from the manga storyline, among some other creative differences of opinion. In fact, it took her 10 years to eventually finish the manga in 2005, a good 6 years after the anime aired its first and only season.
