This might be our last show.
Sale of The Advertiser is expected to go through April 19, after which Gannett will no longer own the paper.
There supposedly will be a third company that will operate the paper during a transition period. Not sure if that means the show or blog will be allowed to continue, or if it does, in what format.

  2. Annoddah Dave April 13, 2010 5:39 am

    ST and Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

My question to Shane is: Being a backup is tough, how do you reconcile your desire to play with just being on the sidelines and practicing just as hard as starters?

    Belated birthday greetings to DPK!

  3. Annoddah Dave April 13, 2010 5:42 am

    ST,

Say it ain’t so…possibly no Warrior Beat??? The Blog Dogs will have to band together and come up with a forum or means to keep this blog going.

  4. haka April 13, 2010 5:42 am

    Geevum Shane!
    Go Warriors!

  5. haka April 13, 2010 5:43 am

    No worries!
    The blog will continue!
    Go Blog!

Hoping for a smooth transition and continuation of all things “Warrior Beat”

  7. Stephen Tsai April 13, 2010 5:53 am

Not very clear what is going to happen.
Not sure what part of the online content comes with the sale.

  8. haroldwah April 13, 2010 5:56 am

This can’t be happening. I made my first blog entry yesterday. Send out a S.O.S! ( SAVE OUR STEVE). Seriously, I’m hoping for the best for you and the other staff at the Advertiser. This is the best blog out there!

  9. Stephen Tsai April 13, 2010 6:02 am

Remember that children’s prayer with the line “if I die before I wake”?
The first time I heard that, I was like, 6, and well, that kept me up at night. I remember how thankful I was waking up the next morning.
I guess I’ll try to post every morning and be thankful if it keeps going through.

  10. Pomai April 13, 2010 6:05 am

ST as mentioned before your online activity will continue if you want it to. Will see you this friday for more info.

Already at work, OH NO! 🙁

  14. chopsueyboy April 13, 2010 6:42 am

Say it ain’t so, we need to keep this blog alive.

  15. tommui April 13, 2010 6:50 am

The Tsaiko name is still registered (as far as I know) as a tradename and not part of the Gannett empire – another David vs. Goliath matchup?

    Good morrow, people.

  16. Bigislandkurt April 13, 2010 6:53 am

Tsai…..if the sale comes out to be unfavorable to you, your blog, and your passion……take the plunge….go solo. You have built a tremendous following over the years. You do not need to Advertiser to keep the warrior beat/Tsai/UHWarrior thing going. Although it does make things easier when the advertiser pays for your electricity usage.

Go solo. Your own website. Your own tv show even. Remember, the darkest part of the night is right before dawn. You can do it bro and I bet there’s a lot of people who will help you get there.

Brian Baldinger’s recent comments about Donovan McNabb to NFL.com — saying McNabb is a flawed player, and that the Eagles will make the playoffs without him while the Redskins watch from the golf course — got a fair bit of national attention. Turns out, though, that Baldinger had quite a bit more to say about McNabb.

Apparently he’s been a long-time doubter. Not long after the trade, he went on the WIP show of Angelo Cataldi — another long-time McNabb doubter — and let ‘er rip.

“Look, I think these flaws that he has are never gonna go away,” Baldinger said. “They’re two-fold. One, I don’t believe he reads coverage well. And to read coverage well, that is to know where to go with the ball based on what the defense does, based on what play-call is.

“And then secondly, he’s not a consistently accurate thrower. And I just think that in this league, against good -to-great defenses – and there’s not that many of them — but when you play Baltimore or you play Dallas or you play Pittsburgh, you better be sharp with the football. Now he does a good job of taking care of it, but sometimes I think it’s because he doesn’t really trust what he sees, and so he won’t make the throw.

“Now, he’s such a good athlete that he’s one of the few guys in this league that can actually run around a little bit, buy a little time, get out of the pocket and then wait for the guy to uncover, to make sure he knows what he’s looking at. But in this league, the defenses have just gotten so good and so complex, the ball has to be out fast, and you have to be able to throw the ball through the tire, like you did as a kid in the backyard. I mean, it has to sail right through there, and it can’t be behind him or at his feet or above him. It has to be, in this offense, on the fingertips.”

So how does Baldinger think McNabb improves the Redskins’ chances this year? Will they now surpass the Eagles? I’ll bet you could probably guess his thoughts.
“I don’t think so,” Baldinger said. “I don’t think they’re a playoff team. I mean, Jason Campbell, I don’t care, you take any great quarterback — Peyton, whoever you want to take — there’s no quarterback who would have played well on that team last year. That offensive line was awful.

“He’s going to be handing off to…I’ve never seen three old running backs on a team before in this league. I mean, they’re gonna hand it off to Clinton Portis, who hasn’t had a good year in two years, Larry Johnson, who hasn’t had a good year in two years on three different teams, or to Willie Parker, who hasn’t played well since he got hurt against the Eagles two years ago. I mean, that’s the backfield.

“Now, the offensive line was old to begin with, and then they lost Randy Thomas and they lost Samuels, and so they were broken there. The safeties are the worst tackling safeties in the league. I mean, there’s a lot of things they have to fix there in Washington. The receivers that he’s going to be throwing to are very young and very immature, and you can just ask Jason Campbell about that. So I think Mike Shanahan and Donovan have an awful lot to do, and I think just adding Donovan to the mix doesn’t make that team that much better than what they were this year.”

Gotcha. Not a huge optimist. But at least the Redskins have a franchise quarterback now, correct?

“Look, I think the guy has been a great pro,” Baldinger said. “He’s obviously a tough guy. He’s played on a broken foot. He came back from [injuries]. The superlatives are all there. But when we’re talking about franchise quarterbacks or potential Hall of Fame quarterbacks – because those are the two terms that always get mentioned with Donovan – we have to look at what you do in big games. That’s the only way to measure it.

“You don’t measure it by the supporting cast, you don’t measure it by how good the defense is, you just measure it by what the guy does in big games. And in my viewpoint, he came up woefully short in a lot of big games….I know everybody wants to put the record up there, and how many wins and championship games he played in, and you can’t take those things away from the guy. Those are all there. But I think you have to evaluate quarterbacks, and franchise quarterbacks, in a totally separate category. Whether it’s fair or not fair, that’s how I do it.”

Cataldi was loving all this, and then he set up one more McNabb pinata for Baldinger when he asked why the quarterback maintains such a strong reputation.

“Well I mean, I think a lot of it is just fear,” Baldinger said. “Just fear of knocking a guy in big games, because you know what, he’s a big face of the National Football League. And you may not get on the inside of him, you may not be able to get the honest viewpoint from him. You know, Pam Oliver on the sideline at FOX one time reported what he said before a game, and then he basically said Pam Oliver was a liar. And Pam Oliver doesn’t need to say any lies. She just basically reports what people tell her….

“And that relationship was broken that day because she basically said something that was true, that he said, and then it came back to haunt her. That’s sort of what you’re up against. If you say something negative about the organization, about Donovan, then you may never get access to that person or to the team again. And I think people feel that way about him, and that’s one of the reasons why they continue to throw bouquets of roses at him.”

So like I said, all in all he seems like a pretty big McNabb fan.

    RE: Moniz speculations

    @Mailepua from yesterday:

I truly do hear what you are saying. But when you write things like “the only one who can lift moniz up is moniz himself,” it surely does sound like you have already made up your mind that moniz has done something wrong. Maybe you know something we or his teammates know nothing about. I understand that this is a blog and if people cannot stand the heat, stay out of the blog kitchen. However, in my opinion, people who tend to “keep it real” only add to the ever-growing mound of speculative kukae already being tossed around.

Wahine remain at No 22 in latest UCS poll, drop to 26 in USA Today/NFCA Division I NFCA Top 25 Poll

Despite winning 8 of 8 on the road and 11 consecutive conference games Hawai’i SB wahine fell to 26 in USA poll.

  21. Kazz April 13, 2010 7:21 am

I have nothing to say anymore with regards to this…

Some commentary courtesy of WAC Softball Blogspot:

Several times already this season, we’ve mentioned the shortcomings of pollsters who vote in the weekly college softball polls.

The rankings have been all over the place this season and rarely have reflected actual on-field results from the previous week. Most importantly, the slant towards the power conferences is more prominent in the sport of softball than virtually any other NCAA Division I polls.

Hawai’i and Fresno State both were perfect last week. The Rainbow Wahine went 5-0 (all on the road), smacked 26 home runs, passed the century mark in team home runs and won their 11th straight game. The Bulldogs won for the ninth time in 11 games and swept a 3-game series from Utah State, one of only three teams in the country to beat unanimous No. 1 Washington (33-3) this season.

And how did the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 pollsters recognize those accomplishments? With a collective yawn.

Hawai’i inexplicably dropped out of the Top 25, falling to 26th in the receiving votes category after just one week in the poll. And the Rainbows are in the midst of one of the greatest and most explosive offensive runs in the history of college softball. Hawai’i has outscored its opponents 119-37 during its current winning streak and is on pace to break the all-time NCAA single-season home run record, set by Arizona in 2001.

The ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 poll will be released later this morning.

    Disgusting.

I’ve screamed it before and I’ll scream it again. OPI wants the success that the Advertiser has, which is why it’s DUMPING the Star Bulletin on someone else, or trying to. Well, you want the success, retain elements that made it a SUCCESS.

  28. Kazz April 13, 2010 7:41 am

    BTW,

To keep the softball/pitching commentary short I’ll throw this in:

Pitching = confidence in infielders’ performance.

Ricketts has been a victim of this a little more than Parnaby. Parnaby has had a rougher time in the WAC, but not too bad. Ricketts is good enough to take us to Oklahoma City, just need the infield to back her up on ground outs and such. Parnaby, while still a freshman, is a more than qualified “second” ace (i.e. a very very very good “backup”.).

Oh and of course the continued “GAS” from our batting order too! 😉

  29. Kazz April 13, 2010 7:45 am

    Boss Bulla,

Months ago I screamed that the polls and voters will continue to disrespect the Wahine with every chance they get and they haven’t disappointed.

First Majam is ignored, now this…

Again, the Wahine just gotta keep their cleats on da “GAS” and keep punishing yellow orbs over the fences.

TAKE THEIR RESPECT FORCEFULLY AND HARD!!!

HARD ENOUGH SO THAT THE VOTERS NO CAN WALK STRAIGHT FOR A MONTH AFTERWARDS!!!

FORCE THEIR DOMINANCE TO THE POINT WHERE NO VOTER WILL BE ABLE TO A FART IN FOR A WEEK!!! 😆

  30. Kazz April 13, 2010 7:47 am

Oooooo…. Someone just called in claiming, that the reason Moniz is away at the moment is because the coaching staff “re-neg’d” on the schollie offer to him and he (Moniz) is upset about it.

    PROVE IT. 🙄

-Coach Bob says just been “recovering” from the jet lag and the time difference from being on the road for so long and has been getting up around 4am everyday since.

-Coach Bob says that the anticipation is over and was a “scary adventure” but phenominal. Mentions the grueling road trip

-Coach Bob believes the schedule plays in our favor with regards to an at large bid should they not win the WAC, says played a wide variety of teams with decent RPIs by his judgement and says we should have a good “case” if the season ended today.

-Coach Bob touches on how much Nevada is a nemesis and while Nevada is down this year, he doesn’t care and says it doesnt mean anything, but is focused in on LaTech for now.

-Coach Bob confirms to Currran that Nevada’s field is that the wind there favors right handers with the wind.

***JESSICA IWATA NAMED “NFCA D1 NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK!!!”*** Coach Bob says he spoke with her at 7am today and she’s humbled by it.

-Coach Bob says Ricketts IS dominant. Says Parnaby is a complimentary pitcher to Ricketts. Coach says “we do have that one pitcher that can bring them to OKC”.

-Coach Bob says that the players are believing in the “system” and plugs Easton and their bats and gives them a lot of credit for supporting the Rainbow Wahine softball program for the last 15 years. Mentions the longevity and the way the bats “get worked in” as to the great product Easton makes.

-Coach Bob says he looks at this team and the 2007 team and says that if we’re behind, no problem and if we’re ahead, let’s go for the 8-run rule to get it over with ASAP and believes this is one of the better teams he’s had.

JESSICA IWATA MAKES RAINBOW WAHINE SOFTBALL HISTORY!!!

STARKVILLE, Miss. – University of Hawai`i’s freshman shortstop, Jessica Iwata, has been named as the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week for games played between April 5 and April 11. She is the first Rainbow Wahine softball player to ever earn the prestigious honor.

Iwata, a Lihu`e, Kaua`i native and Kaua`i High School graduate, went 12-for-20 on the week with nine runs, 17 RBIs, two doubles, six home runs, two grand slams and two walks. She finished the week with a 1.600 slugging percentage, a .636 on-base percentage and a .600 batting average. She hit safely in all five of her games this week, including recording multiple hits in four of those game and multiple RBIs in three. In the Rainbow Wahine’s final game against Boise State on Saturday, Iwata tied UH’s and the WAC’s single-game home run record with three home runs while driving in a UH and WAC single-game record, eight RBIs.

Now Bobby Curran is upset about the Wahine softball team dropping out of the NFCA poll…

Bobby, nothing new sir!!! You’ve been in Hawaii for this long. The bias never changes.

    Re: Moniz.
No, Moniz is not habuts about the scholarship thing.
No, he did not do anything illegal.
No, this is not an academic issue.
No, nobody in his familiy is sick.
    No, Moniz is not sick.
No, this is not financial issue.
    This is a unique situation.
    That’s all I can say.
It will take some time to resolve this.
This is truly a personal matter. So, while I love all of you, I’m not at liberty to reveal details. But thanks for all of the emails saying I’m your best friend.

This is a good time to remind all you Tsaiko Tsupporters to come out this Saturday for the *Practice Tail Gate.*

I’m sure there will deep discussions about launching the Tsaiko Life Boat. It has been used successfully on occasion, and proved seaworthy.

Maybe some fresh ideas from the newer members of this blog can be implemented to help with the transition.

Meanwhile, we’ll still have time to regroup with our fellow blogsters and talk football. More detailed information about our upcoming 2010 fb tailgates will also be available.

So please stop by and enjoy our delicious variety of island favorites, talk story, down a few greenies, and still have time to spare for other weekend activites.

Mahalo ST, for clearing the air in what most of us already suspected was pure KAKA.

    JM,

Yes, the softball team and Under Armour will honor breast cancer research this Saturday.

Now, I don’t have any pink UA/UH gear, but maybe I can go find some pink UA wristbands for this Saturday at Sports Authority.

    #47-ST

If UH, or Coach Mack, were looking for a press spokesperson ST would be the perfect person for the job.

I look at ST response and it details a little of the Moniz situation while preserving the players privacy and dignity. Like what a real press spokesperson would do.

This is great. This response makes me feel good about Moniz and the UH program. It deters speculation. It nips things at the bud. It is also in contrast of the coaches reply of no comment.

The source of this information has to have come from the coach. Then it begs the question why isn’t the coach releasing a statement to the media in the same fashion that ST did so that the inquiring public can see that there’s nothing to panic about in the Moniz situation.

  56. Stephen Tsai April 13, 2010 9:17 am

    Actually, I didn’t say anything.
I just tried to quell some of the speculation.

  57. BIGAL April 13, 2010 9:20 am

    Stephen,
Can you clarify Andy Katz’s statement that Jeremy Lay is not returning next year? I don’t remember hearing that from anyone he isn’t returning.

Regarding Mo, the only thing i can think of that is serious and personal business is that he messed with another player’s gf…but enough of that…

Congrats to the softball team for cracking the top 25 of ESPN. Still being disrespected by other pollsters. Just got to keep on winning!

  58. Kazz April 13, 2010 9:25 am

It’s so DUMB on my part. I shouldn’t even have relayed what was said on the radio but since ST showed some light on the matter it should be snuffed out and not even regarded as fact.

I think ALL student athletes deserve that respect.

  59. SteveM April 13, 2010 9:25 am

    Good morning everyone.

At work today so I’ll keep my comment brief regarding comment #1 today.

I am not worried about the blog continuing if ST wants to do it. I think HA has tremendous online presense and you do not take over and throw out your top blog with an international audience. But this is where the “if ST wants to do it” comes in, since the rules might change.

There is a Plan B already in place and Plan C in the works and ST may have a few more I can’t even guess at (but I have suspicions). I am not worried about the blog continuing even if I’m not asked to be involved. 🙂 There are also many “turn key” systems he and Wena could manage.

In the very unlikely event of sudden disruption, go to LizKaui’s Tsai-ko Lifeboat or my home page for further directions…or check your email if i have your address (like when I sent ot the Lifeboat message last year)…or from any Tsai-ko you know. I believe we have a web of email addresses that will reach most Tsai-kos in a day or two. There’s a couple thousand active at last count.

  60. Kazz April 13, 2010 9:28 am

Bryant Moniz owes no answer to anyone and in a similar light I don’t think anyone at UH does either.

  61. Stephen Tsai April 13, 2010 9:29 am

I think there had been speculation that Lay and Williams would not be returning.
I do not believe that to be the case.
They’ve had some good unsupervised workouts, I’m told, and they’ve really been working hard during the offseason training. For instance, the players were required to push a Jeep the length of the soccer field several times yesterday.
You don’t push a Jeep if you’re not planning on staying.

  62. GRM April 13, 2010 9:31 am

What about Liz Kauai’s blog life boat if new owner’s sink this blog.

Further, UH Wahine sweeps the road trip, Jessica named National Player of the Week. Wahinw win several games by mercy rule. but Hawaii drops out of the Top 25. They should’ve gone UP! Don’t understand some polls.

  63. Stephen Tsai April 13, 2010 9:33 am

    Kazz:
It was fine to relay what was said on the radio because, by airing, it became public record.
Only thing was that it was incorrect information.
It’s natural to want to know a secret, but there is a reason why some things are a secret.
And, while we’re at it, a former head coach did NOT have an affair with a student-athlete, and that student-athlete did NOT have his baby. I don’t care how many people absolutely believe that happened, it did NOT.

    ST and ALL–

First of all, thank you for giving me the opportunity to rant and rave at times without censoring me. Although, I have not met anyone on this blog, I feel like I already know most, if not, all of you tsaiko bloggers based on your posts. Although there are occasional individuals who post negative things about the team, for the most part, majority of all that post remain positive. And, this is what differentiate this site from the others.

With that said, whatever direction the Advertiser chooses, I wish many of you the best of luck, health, family, and passion.

  65. Kazz April 13, 2010 9:39 am

Louisville Softball BUMPS us from the NFCA Top 25.

    Here’s who Louisville beat:
Bellarmine, Morehead State, Murray State, Kansas, Baylor, Houston, St. John’s, Youngstown State, Charleston Southern, Akron, College of Charleston, St. Louis, Purdue, Northern Illinois, Nevada, Kentucky, Cal State Northridge, Cal State Fullerton, *Texas, and Indiana

    Here’s who Louisville LOST to:
Ohio State, Charleston Southern, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Hofstra, Michigan, Arizona, New Mexico, and DePaul (TWICE!!!)

    *-Notable “upset”.

Anyone care to validate us getting bumped for this?

  66. Old Diver April 13, 2010 9:45 am

Thanks for the information ST. Glad to hear Moniz being out is not an issue of health. When it comes down to it, good health for one’s self and family is the most important thing in ones life.

  67. al April 13, 2010 9:45 am

the university has a very credible privacy policy that does not allow any coach, associate, or staffer to disclose any information regarding injuries, suspensions, indefinite leaves and the like.

and that is the way it should be. if the player wants to reveal stuff then it is his and only his prerogerative to do so.

more important is that we move on and support both moniz and the team. no need make so niele.

    …nuff said.

Last thing Im gonna harp on this whole TOP 25 dropping out thing in the NFCA poll…

If the NFCA deems Jessica Iwata worthy of being named the National Player of the Week by her posting those stats against teams like NMSU, USU, and BSU, then I cannot see why the NFCA can VALIDATE penalizing us for DESTROYING these SAME teams by dropping us out of their poll.

Yes, it is as simple as this.

    shane

i’ve been referring to you as “stone cold” shane austin since the day you arrived. i hope you don’t mind, i can imagine that its not first time.

i can’t imagine what excitement courses through your veins these days. although, i am sure that the circumstances that elevated you to number one are not something you brag about. however, i am sure that all that perserverance and hard work has paid off.

tell us what has been the most significant influences that…

one, what brought you across the ocean to hawaii?
two, what or who inspires you to work hard even when you were well at the bottom of the totem pole several years ago.
three, what is in your dream as a student/athlete?

    we’ll be pulling for you!

    Good morning Tsaikos….

Oh, man, what will I do if the blog isn’t here anymore…No worries though, things will turn out fine…Prayers and thoughts for you ST.

Question for Shane and then I have to leave and catch the show later: “Personally, as a competitive person, I like the king of the hill competition/concept. How do you like the king of the hill competition/concept??? Do you feel it makes all the QBs more competitive? Is it more of a driving force or a weight on all of you???”

no worries about photos as we got “homey” as our premiere no photo guy in Hawaii; we also go Brew on the mainland – at least he will allow Mrs A-House to take a pic from behind!!

still remember my first outing with the Tsaikos at Aloha Tower Market Place – sat next to Tom Mui on my left and Curtis Murayama on my right. Directly across me sat ST and Kekaula and I could see them whispering – who dat guy across us? never said a word to either, but said hello to Darren, Pride, Wreck, and Made in Hawaii.

  83. jm2375 April 13, 2010 10:39 am

Stretch – ST said it was 3:30, softball at 4pm. So, will there be a Tsai-ko caravan from the t-gate to UH?

  84. NorthShoreFan April 13, 2010 10:43 am

Kazz…..stop with the Skittles already!..I told you no …nuff…no mo!..
The dis on our Wahines can be cured only one way and it is the same way nationally recognized programs/teams do it.
No worry about national recognition now.. I want it at the end of the season when they can point to the record. Then no doubt about it. Right now these pollsters don’t know beans about what going happen in the tournaments
The Wahines just need to focus and take care of the schedule. If they got what it takes they will be there at he end of the season.
I am really excited about this team and believe they can go a long way this year. The rankings will not be hitting the ball or making the play. Our Wahines will and can.

Practice tailgate this week Saturday and Wahine double header at the WSS!…Got to finish the greenies by 2:00pm..den off to WSS!

I got a lot of free tickets to this series! Let me know if you need some..any amount … can handle!

  88. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc April 13, 2010 11:00 am

It’s not going to be easy. Five seniors are gone off the roster. There will be others who won’t be back, such as suspended Dwain Williams (not official but no one expects him to return) or Jeremy Lay, who was also out at the end of the season. Ji Xiang informed Arnold he would graduate and play pro ball in his native China.

    http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/blog/_/name/katz_andy/id/5081114/arnold-returns-hawaii-revive-program

I knew about Ji Xiang, but why these two – especially Jeremy Lay.

Re the future of local news coverage – including UH sports – a number of people are already in deep discussion about creating an on-line paid subscription e-newspaper. The journalists and reporters have to be paid and that means subscriptions.

In other words, what we now get fo’free, we’ll have to pay for if we want to keep things going.

This is NOT the same one being put together by the founder of Google whose full name escapes me at the moment – Peter
Omasomethingorother. Instead, the concept has emerged as a result of the upcoming sale.

RE THE PRACTICE TAILGATE: Don’t forget that there’s a Warrior practice at 3 pm and a softball doubleheader at 4 pm. The volleyball and baseball teams are on the road in California, but I don’t think that there will be any direct radio coverage. I remember hearing something from Don Robbslast week that he was not going on this road trip, but I really wasn’t paying attention. Does anyone have any information on this?

  89. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc April 13, 2010 11:08 am

Sorry for the bold. Meant to take it off after the word paid.

I am meeting with a couple of legislators later on today concerning the vastly differing versions of the State House & State Senate CIP budget.

The two Chambers continue to disagree on the overall budget, but I suspect that there might be more support for the construction side of the upcoming budget because it will “stimulate the economy” and can be paid off over an extended period of time through bond sales & not from tax revenues – plus it will enhance the facilities and draw in more more fans once the improvements are in place. In other words, these improvements will generate future income..

The Conference Committee’s next meeting is Wednesday at 7 pm. Please contact your legislators and ask them to support the Senate’s version

Wat Goin’ Be: Practice Tail Gate

Wen Goin’ Be: Saturday, April 17th

Weah Goin Be: Richardson Park, Pavillion #5 (Click on SteveM’s name for location map).

How Long Goin’ Take: 09:30 AM (Coffee Call) until all da kau- kau is devoured and the adult beverages are consumed…or Security escorts us out!

    Yep. A great show.

I liked Shane’s affable nature as well as his confidence.

  111. J-Dog April 13, 2010 12:05 pm

Shane Austin seems to handle the media quite well.

I like the fact that he is the last QB still at UH that got a taste of being in the shadows of Colt Brennan in 2007.

June Jones must have seen potential in Austin to bring him on board.

  112. Slugger April 13, 2010 12:10 pm

    ST ~

Andy Katz’ article doesn’t mention Bill Amis. I thought Jeremy Lay was coming back. Hope he’s doing better after his hernia operation. We need those outside shooters!

I should go look for a pink UH shirt for Saturday’s softball game. Thanks to Na Koa (Don Weir) for including a 15% discount card with the Na Koa renewal notices.

Hey, Don Weir! I got in touch with R. Blangiardi about continuing to help the Na Koa office.

Al ~ Thanks for the reminder. Experts say that the average person needs to be given detailed information at least 7 times before they ‘get it.’

Tsaiko’s adds another level to that because of da *HAH…wat you Sed?* factor.

  115. A-House April 13, 2010 12:24 pm

ok, ok, al – you trying to socre some points when you were absent? for shame, for shame and thanks to SteveM for placing all those seated to my right that day.

BleedGreen: oh, bogaoong on hot rice – hmmmmmmmm, used to eat that all the time growing up on Kauai – add a little humha holehole – broke da mouth!!!

  116. al April 13, 2010 12:37 pm

    slugger…
    if i’m being honest.

    i wouldn’t classify lay as a shooter.

he averaged 8.4 pts per game. (double digit average is the standard)

his shooting percentage was a paltry, 52 shots made out of 74 attempts for .299 per which relates to making 3 out 10. (standard is .500)

his three point shooting was a meager 28 of 104 .269 (standard for 3pt is .400)

    and yet he kept shooting.

  117. al April 13, 2010 12:39 pm

ahouse…i was just tugging your chain. you know me. i know you can take it so that is why i joke around with you.

amazing how stevem can remember all those details. do you think he is stalking me?

  118. al April 13, 2010 12:40 pm

ahouse…that sounds like plantation food. you must have come from the same camp as my ancestors.

  119. jm2375 April 13, 2010 12:42 pm

al – #116 – you mean 25 out of 74 right? cuz 52 out of 74 is REALLY good! 🙄

  120. A-House April 13, 2010 12:48 pm

al #117 – you be sure to look around when you go out to see any stalker(s).

al #118 – oh yea, planation food – days of no worries – play in the cane fields and use their aluminum flumes for canoes – hook bass and blue gill – cook’um over fire – bring one humongus musubi and shoyu – swim all day – borrow “sake” pineapples and throw dem into the resorvior for “chilled pineapple”.

  121. al April 13, 2010 12:51 pm

    jm411

    i actually left out 100.

it should have been 52 out of 174 for .299 which is really bad. give me a month and i could beat him.

  122. al April 13, 2010 12:52 pm

don’t forget the tilapia which was abundant.

  123. (Jesse)James April 13, 2010 12:58 pm

A-House…I was there too…I said, “Eh, you work out at 24 HR yeah? I’ve seen you there before.”

Then I went back into my shell, we all know how shy I am….

Bleedsgreen…no worries, like al said, we were all shy in the beginning from that very first meeting…and he will vouch that I still am….. right al????

  124. al April 13, 2010 1:02 pm

we have six available scholies if you include xi’s.

    and possibly 8 in total.

if gibber brings in 5 who can contribute right away and three for the future it would be a great job recruiting at this late juncture. it needs to be a mix of jc guys, transfers, and freshmen just to balance the roster classes.

even if he doesn’t grab them all this year it would be okay since we would only lose hiram, amis, and kurtz. so having four scholies next year would be a good thing.

  125. al April 13, 2010 1:05 pm

so andy katz’ story reaffirmed nickleberry’s candidacy for asst coach 2. i know ganot is on board until at least june, but, it sounded like he may be staying after all. if so, then what of brandyn akana?

and will tim sheperd and johnny white be keep on as staffers?

  126. al April 13, 2010 1:08 pm

ummm. yah, j/j is rather shy amongst the public.

my advice is don’t get too close to him because then the veil is dropped and a not so shy guy is, er, unveiled. and he has this different perspective on things. you know things that make you go hmmmmm.

    mwahahahaha

  127. (Jesse)James April 13, 2010 1:15 pm

Yeah…BleedGreen, if you ever met Rob25, she loves…and I mean absolutely loves chicken gizzards….just ask Gramps about that one….

  128. (Jesse)James April 13, 2010 1:16 pm

It’s the Legislative analyst in him. You know, a political thing. Kinda like whichever way the wind is blowing.

Funny thing about him is…there’s a Tsaikette that can never remember his name, so she just calls him “Jesus.” “He’s got the same hairstyle!” she adds.

  130. Calvin from Kona April 13, 2010 1:32 pm

okay if you aren’t showing up for the coffee call, what time should we come by the practice-gate? What to bring?

  131. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc April 13, 2010 1:33 pm

For those of you challenging my request to Kazz that he send out e-mail updates – here is what SteveM’s website says:

    Tsai-ko “Practice” Tailgate
    Saturday, April 17, 2010 – from 0900

    Richardson Field, Patio 5

A Tsai-ko tailgate without a football game to interrupt the party.
Please remember to help defray the rental cost of the facility (paid by BG).

Map and photo of Patio 5 on the Tsai-ko Tailgate webpage noted on Kazz’s tailgate emails.

Known food contributions: (see Kazz emails for updates)

    kalua Pig (Pomai)
    lomi lomi (Calvin from Kona)
    salad (Slugger)

Since it’s quite likely that I’ll be coming by bus, it would be very helpful to identify the best/easiest/fastest way to enter the area on foot.

What is the recommended per-person $$$ donation to repay BG? Kazz is also coordinating the food contributions as well.

Hence the request to Kazz for updates and entrance instructions.

  132. What? April 13, 2010 1:37 pm

“Hence the request to Kazz for updates and entrance instructions.”

    What request for entrance instructions?

  133. Stephen Tsai April 13, 2010 1:43 pm

We got letters from HA Management, Inc.
I think that’s the transition company.

  134. Stephen Tsai April 13, 2010 1:51 pm

So the earliest the sale will go through is April 25.

  135. Darren April 13, 2010 1:52 pm

Bleedsgreen…..at the first Tsaiko gathering, the first guys I see are Bulla and DPK. I almost turned around to go home. Turns out that these guys are the most jovial and positive fans you can imagine. So if the first ones you see are two really large, fair-skinned Hawaiians (pretty sure they’re telling the truth about the Kapalama connection)…no worries, they’re really nice guys.

This blog locale must/will find a way to survive and continue.

ST is killing off all the well-know conspiracy theories.

SteveM – yeah…that was me looking to get a free lunch from Kinda Shy (she’s not shy).

Thanks for sharing, I found this article, while looking for free downloads and ran across this site, thoughtful comments and good points made.

  142. Ralph April 13, 2010 2:52 pm

Read Katz article, what struck me was Gib acknowledging that he noticed the couch and desk being the same one there when his dad coached at UH 23 years ago. I guess the mbb offices need as much refurbishing as the football offices.

  143. Ralph April 13, 2010 2:54 pm

I always thought June Jones was talking with a little exaggeration that the football offices had the same carpet and furniture in them when he played at UH.

Then the question to ask then is why didn’t the accused sue the professor for making those allegations in an open letter to the editor of the paper (I don’t know if it was this paper or the other)if they weren’t true?

That would only make sense, right?

If you’re a victim of someone’s slander wouldn’t you want to have the records set straight?

Wouldn’t you want your reputation restored?

Wouldn’t a lawyer eagerly lick his chops into taking this case for the accused if the professor’s allegations were false?

  149. (Jesse)James April 13, 2010 4:00 pm

Happy Birthday, Kara! You do a great job…I DO NOT envy people (like our beloved blog host) who have to work when most of the world is off sitting in the stands or watching at home.

  154. Manoa April 13, 2010 4:48 pm

Glad to hear ST in #63 set the record right on that “internet legend” about a certain ex-coach and an ex-student athlete and their baby.

That is absolutely not true– I know people very close to the student side of the story. This is one of those internet myths. It was investigated by a private detective who found the source of the story which began with a posting on the internet. The source was a bitter individual trying to get back at the athletics program who admitted on being questioned by the detective admitted that he did not have the sources or proof for the story that he claimed online and he took the story off.

  155. Bulla April 13, 2010 4:53 pm

  156. Slugger April 13, 2010 5:02 pm

I love this blog. It’s like sitting at an online bar talking to friends about sports, rumors, food, teasing people…

    ST ~

Did the HAM Inc. letter say anything about online properties?

    al,

Thanks for the stats on Jeremy. I liked that he kept on trying to shoot. Who was the top 3-point shooter on the team last year?

Manoa Mist, if it’s your berfday, go celebrate! Happy, happy…

  157. Pomai April 13, 2010 5:04 pm

Manoa, the bad part is once it is on the internet it will always be there somewhere. It is. Some times people like that just like to hear/see themselves talk.

  158. Stephen Tsai April 13, 2010 5:05 pm

    Update:
    We got our letters today.
AS of now, the closing of The Advertiser is expected to occur Sunday, April 25.
The next day, The Advertiser will be published under a third arm (HA Management Inc.)
There won’t be any noticeable difference .
There is a possibility the closing could be delayed.
Then when either Brand X is sold or there’s a merger, then The Advertiser will cease to exist.
In short, we’ll have a show and blog next week.

  159. Bulla April 13, 2010 5:16 pm

    ST

mahalo for the update, you and your ohana are in our prayers

see you at practice tomorrow morning 🙂

yup difficult to stop a rumor, especially in this day of social networking-internet brings us facebook, my space, blogs, twitter, etc., and I feel for the athlete whose family had to endure such malice. and now bluefintuna wants to bring it up again, let it go, its a nonissue.

I made some sashimi for lunch. Had some frozen ahi from Japan. Just cut it out of the vacuum-sealed packaging and thawed it out and it was heavenly.

Sometimes tuna is good after being frozen for a while then thawed out.

Sometimes gotta eat something else. 😆

  164. (Jesse)James April 13, 2010 5:27 pm

Woo Hoo for ST…and the Blog….

Nevertheless, continued prayers for both…it can never hurt…

  165. Kazz (blkberry_storm) April 13, 2010 5:27 pm

Gonna head out and search for some PINK UA stuff for this weekend that can pass as men’s apparel. 😉

  166. al April 13, 2010 5:30 pm

    #158…i am confused???

why would this be good news?
didn’t you say the HA will be closing once either/or happens to brand x?

does that mean brand x will become the only daily?
why did they buyout the HA?

so a buyout of the SB is not good as previously reported?
and a merger means only the SB exists?
then, who knows who stays is that right?

  167. d1島 April 13, 2010 5:31 pm

  168. Pride. April 13, 2010 5:41 pm

Thanks to ST for the Pro Day numbers on Pepa and Brashton. Both have pretty good numbers posted.

Look at their hand span, and then measure your own and compare. Both young men have pretty big hands.

Good forty time by Brashton. Good ten yard time by Pepa. Also good pro-agility by both players.

Based on those numbers, I would say that both Laupepa and Brashton have pretty good chances of getting at least free agent tryouts.

Hopefully they both already have agents lined up, if the NCAA doesn’t decide in their favor. I think that Pepa already has one in the family. And on second thought, Brashton has one in the family also.

Good luck to both players no matter what the outcome of the NCAA decision.

  169. (Jesse)James April 13, 2010 5:44 pm

I paused and looked at this statement for a long time.

Let me join in with a chorus of well said Ralph.

After all, all he has in his mind, including all his cohorts, that yep bluefintuna brought this up today on this blog

All I did in post #148 was ask a few question that was posted in #63.

For the record can someone honestly say who brought this subject up?

These two evil empires conspired behind all of our backs to stab us after we gave up wages and benefits to keep THA profitable and in town. This is what happens when you allow corporate America to do whatever the heck they want to do.

    re: 172
red zone, that is a good question that no one is answering. For all we know they could take the money and run. Seeing that the sub. price difference is so wide, do you think they will drop the THA price to the SB? Doubt it. Its greed baby, GREED!

The idea of the BB players using the jeep in their conditioning is this a new routine?

Do the football players use the jeep in their conditioning?

Is this something that the new strength and conditioning coach introduced into the player’s workouts?

    To the UH athletic department

With the impending sale of the HA and the likely loss of the paper’s dedication and financial support to the school it would leave a favorable impression on everyone, mostly the longtime workers of the paper and their families, if the school could bestow some sort gratitude, thanks and Aloha to the paper for all that they have done for the school over the years. A press release, banners galore at the venues with inscription thanking the HA and pregame announcement of acknowledgments at one of the games would be very heartwarming for all.

  219. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc April 14, 2010 12:10 am

    Kekoa:

If I recall correctly, this Saturday’s T-Gate is not in the cabana area where we’ve had the T-Parties for the past couple of years – it is in the upper field alongside Kamehameha Highway.

The upper field is completely surrounded by a high fence with no gates except by the stoplight where we cross over to go to the Stadium.

However, that gate is locked except where there’s a game – and even then it’s not unlocked until early afternoon on game days. Last fall I tried to go out that way before the gate was unlocked to catch a bus to Pearlridge. I walked alongside the fence trying to find another way to get out and wound up circling the field, going back down the little hill, and walking back to the main driveway.

Pomai mentioned that he thought there might be another gate, but I haven’t heard anything more about it.

As far as I know, the only way to get to the upper level alongside Kamehameha Highway is to enter at the Arizona Memorial driveway, turn right and walk about a quarter of a mile in a “pearlridge” direction to the roadway leading up to the gate described above, turn right at the top of the hill and walk back towards town for a couple of hundred yards. Realistically, it will take me about 15 minutes to get to the site even though the bus stop is just across the highway.

JM did make a tentative offer to give me a ride, but I now have a meeting in town at 9 am which means that I will be coming out by bus close to 12 noon after having stopped off at Costco to pick up a dessert. Under the circumstances, I’ll bring along a beach towel to sit on rather than trying to carry a chair.

Again, SteveM’s website states that Kazz will be sending out information via e-mail. The map itself is not on the site anymore.

WR Brandon Marshall to the Dolphins – per espn.

‘Fins get their home run receiver.

    ‘Fins give 2010 #2, and a 2011 pick.

AFC East looks tough with Jets & ‘Fins and the “usual” Pats.

6-10 center commits to Hawaii – HA sports.

The international connections for the University of Hawai’i men’s basketball team are apparently already in effect.

Vander Joaquim, a 6-foot-10, 240-pound center at College of Eastern Utah, has committed to play for the Rainbow Warriors, according to his coaches.

Joaquim is originally from Angola, and has ties to new Hawai’i associate coach Walter Roese.

    Women’s basketball …

The Hawaii women’s basketball team is expected to receive a signed letter of intent today from Keianna Evans of Kaskaskia (Ill.) Junior College to kick off the spring signing period.

Evans, a 5-7 point guard, will arrive with two years of eligibility. She averaged 15.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game last season.

UH has three remaining scholarships available for the 2010-11 season.

this weekend will determine how much success the gib arnold era will enjoy during his first year at the helm.

with coleman, wiseman, and now joaquim. this first recruit class looms large. it could become storybook if he can convince bo barnes, a lights out shooter and kyle shamburger a deft ballhandling, sharpshooting point guard to take the pacific ocean plunge.

there’ll also be more commits. the word on the street is that one or two more jc guys will enter the stan sheriff center. we’ll end up with seven new guys at the least.

the fruits of gib arnold’s efforts since he was hired are about to surface within the next few weeks.

  278. Stripper Jobs May 1, 2010 10:21 am

Hey everyone, I’d like to know if anyone has a suggestion about a good town to get a job as a strip club dancer. I just got laid off and I am willing to pretty much relocate anywhere a chance. I worked at a strip club here in Ohio for a few months and I have stripped at a bachelor party or two 😉 I am 22 years old and have a really tight body. Anyone have any suggestions about a new city with profitable strip clubs to get a job at?

Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done.

  284. hibiscus tea from the flower May 11, 2010 4:37 am

I first tried out hibiscus tea in a spa in Cancun Mexico and loved the taste. Once I found about medical benefits, I was seriously stimulated to purchase some. Couldn’t locate it at all in any local shops but purchased internet. I’ve been drinking about three cups on a daily basis (cold) for around 15 days at present and the most current hypertension reading was the best it’s been in Ages! I highly recommend.
