The Warriors have been hush-hush on who opens the game at quarterback. Expect both to play.
There was the same debate last year. The answer? Slotback John Ursua started as the wildcat quarterback. Alas, UH was called for a penalty — the play never happened statistically — and then McDonald entered.
One thing not up for debate: Each team really, really needs a victory. The Spartans (4-5, 1-4 MW) need to win two of their final three games to become eligible. They are only playing 12 regular-seaosn games. The Warriors (5-4, 2-3) need two win at least two of their final four.
Keep an eye on:
> SJSU quarterback Josh Love, who had a breakout game against UH last season. He can throw, run and throw on the run.
> McDonald or Cordeiro need to be wary of a defense that gets a lot of picks (14).
> SJSU linebacker Ethan Aguayo is a tackling machine (79 in six games).

No excuses we need this now. Quite honestly we have shown ability to jump on somebody big and early. This needs to be that game with a strong finish. Every single offensive down is gold. GoWarriors!!!!
The best quarterback and the two best receivers on the field tonight might be on the opposite sidelines. San Jose State offense has looked scary good. This won’t be a walkover for sure. Think it’s a tossup. Hopefully, Warriors pull out a win. I believe they still have a mathematical shot at the West title. A week after beating UH on a last-play FG, Fresno fell in the same manner to Utah State. Get chance.

sdsu looked so bad at home against unlv, i’m not surprised that they lost at home against nevada. hey, team cordero, you’re right. this is the guy. i hope cole sees the field again, but obviously, chevan earned another start. so relaxing, this game. i can’t believe hawaii is still alive for the championship game.

Army may be the toughest team, but playing UNLV on the road is the toughest game. Hawaii always struggles in Vegas.
“D” looked bad but they made them kick, I think, 3
FG’s. Otherwise they would have won. Recruit, Recruit will be the mantra.
Noa Kamana looked good in what looked like Sanitoa’s role. And Paul Scott will be BEAST next year.
16, Carters kid is solid and a nice transfer pickup, but considering we are now starting a guy that was a part time starter at tiny NAIA Pacific U, well, it speaks to our problems in the back end,
Chevan throws a more accurate ball consistently, has elite spatial vision, better than average reading defenses (as a redshirt freshman) and could be a WR in the RnS offense with his quick feet and hips.
Cole has a bigger arm, better than average spatial vision, better than average at reading defenses and elite level in-line speed like Colin Kapernick. Like Kapernick, Cole has issues with consistent accuracy.
Colt Brennan is the pinnacle of what a RnS/RPO QB should be… Elite accuracy, live better than average arm, elite at reading defenses, elite spatial vision (which aids in throwing accuracy), better than average runner (quick feet, decent hips and above average in-line speed)
Both Cole and Chevan have the hearts of Warriors and are fearless competitors and they bring different type of attributes to the game. But both are winners and could start at pretty much any D-1/FBS level college, no question.
I think Hawaii has a great problem to have these 2 Warriors on the roster and I will let the coaches and players decide which one should play against which opponent. Seriously, none of us know the medical condition of Cole or Chevan at any given time or the type of scheme Rolo and the Hawaii coaches are planning to deploy with either Cole or Chevan or both against any given opponent.
The one thing we know is Rolo likes to play head games with opponent coaches, like misinformation, gambling on 4th down and trick plays.
We have been killed by play extending QBs. We have one now. The OL is truly the strength of this team. Time to impose their will on the opponent. I truly only care about next week UNLV.
I don’t appreciate this morning’s Star-Advertiser front page banner stating “A FRESH START” for the Warriors.

The other week on the Josh Pacheco show, I texted in saying I think UH should extremely discount tickets for the rest of the season to try and salvage a good crowd. While ticket sales with that wouldn’t be that high, at least they could recoup with parking. The stadium authority could also benefit with possible concession spikes, although I think the food sucks.
Pacheco said that wouldn’t be a good idea because it devalues the team and would send a bad message to the coaches and players. While I do agree with that, I think at the same time having the players run out to nearly empty stands essentially does the same thing right? I’m sure the players would rather have a larger crowd than worrying about how much the tickets were. 16,000 is pathetic for a D-1 school. That’s worst than most Chow years, and High school games have drawn more. I see a lot of comments online about fans saying that tickets are way too expensive. I agree. The program is still growing and recovering and until it’s back to where we would like it to be, I think lowering the prices is the start to trying to bring fans back to the stadium
chevan cordeiro has a quicker release and makes much better reads and decisions than cole. cole is physically bigger and has a bigger arm but none of that matters without the decision making and accuracy. i think rolo knows who should be the starting qb moving forward.
If you attended he game, you see the age demographic that supports the team…..it’s the old timers. Very little from the 20-30 age group and I would say 70% 40 and up.
Younger people are just not going to the games no matter what. Student get in free, yet they still done show up.
What UH need to do is target those who uses to go but now done. Discounting tickets is a good idea.
Right now…..students don’t see the value of going. Hopefully when the new stadium is built and the surrounding areas is more vibrant, maybe the students will come and make it a night out. Plus rail will be ready so maybe it will be more convenient for those students who don’t have cars and don’t want to wait for those buses that takes forever to come and get to their destinations.
15. In the 2nd quarter, the UH offense gave SJSU the ball on the UH21 due to a fumble. The UH defense stopped the Spartans in 3 plays and minus 5 yards, so they had to kick a 43 yd FG. They had to kick 4 FG’s in the game…. 12 pts is better than 28 pts.
Congrats to BigWave96744 with his first place Tsai-ko score guess of 41-38, only 3 points off the actual 42-40 score. He has placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in FOUR of the 7 games in which guesses were compiled.
Getting a little ahead of ourselves, but …. if UH beats UNLV on Saturday and then meets SDSU with a chance of clinching the MWC West Division title, the school should have a pep rally to excite and incentivize the students, then offer discounts in the less-desirable seating areas as was done for the Oregon State game. If that doesn’t add several thousand to the crowd count, then they’ll need to be some changes starting with next season.

I remember listening to Pacheco show that day and I was surprised how quick he was to dismiss the discount idea. I think it would devalue them if you discounted tickets and the same amount of people showed up. That’s it. I would rather have a filled stadium. Would make me play harder. Coach harder too so more fans would return. We need more kids to enjoy the product. Kids want to return win or lose so concession staples (ice cream, popcorn, pizza, musubi,soda) need to be reasonably priced. Maybe hand out scripts or coupons (kids like scripts) like at a carnival to kids (students as well, they are kids too actually) that they can be used to “purchase” concessions. Got to do something to market to kids and families. Especially now/soon as the program starts to show more potential. Get some attachment to the program. And more “cam” cut-away features too maybe. Can do. Should do. Matlin.

I wish they would use an ad similar to this one I submitted as an idea last year to market to the younger 20 to 30 year old fan. Especially now as the older,passionate fan base slowly passes away.
In the original draft the “picture” was of him, his grandfather (who had passed) and his father. We felt like that was way too somber a tone for the ad idea so we changed the picture to just he and his father. The ad idea is at comment #19.

Yeah they should do some type of deal with the high school students. If they show their high school IDs they get extra cheap tickets or something. I also never understood why they don’t have more small local business vendors or food truck type of businesses sell at the stadium. Charge them a fee for space rent and let them sell their food rather than the below average stadium food
Why don’t they give free tickets to first 1000
fans and discounted tickets to the next 5000
fans and everyone else gets a door prize or

UNLV is rested and has skill at a lot of offensive positions. The true strength of the Warrior team is the OL, not only talent but depth. Have to exploit that this week. No way UNLV can halt putting up 28 plus points from us. Now key is how to stop them. They are actually pretty good at stoppingg themselves. Nothing else matters but getting there and winning at a place that has haunted us. Again storm the 9th Island and burn the boats! GoWarriors

It’s just going come down to the offense being able to keep up and just outscore their offense. The defense this year has been declining as the season has gone on. This game vs SJSU luckily the offense was clicking otherwise this could have easily been a blow out
I think a DC would have an easier time game planning for Chevan than Cole. I feel like Chevan is still not real comfortable from the pocket yet, But you could see the O-line put in some “extra” effort in his protection just like Wyoming game last season.
Kind of different (for O-line and WR’s, even us the fans) when you know the QB can extend the play somehow. Awesome. But I think (you can see it) Chevan’s instinct is to break from the pocket after first progression. That’s not always good. Rolo was in the process of breaking that habit and staying tight. He can do it now, albeit with some discomfort and the (taxing) need for full focus from O-line.
Make sure Cole is ready to go and give him good checkdown options (since his play extension is based from the pocket) and full focus protection too. Different from Chevan. Awesome too. Just needs to run more, trust the run game, and trust the pre snap. Can do

Simple: house giveaway. No. How about a better #. Three lucky winners will win a house. Yeah. Give away three houses. Heck, maybe five. Get the sponsoring banks (who INSIST ON LETTING US KNOW THEY ARE A SPONSOR OF UH SPORTS EVERY STEP OF THE WAY!!!!) and any interested realtor or home-owning types on board. Here are the rules: you enter your name, phone #, address all that, ON THE WAY OUT OF ALOHA STADIUM (yeah. You gotta stay for the WHOLE game). One entry per person BUT you increase your chances to win because you’ll have, at the end of the season—when the drawing will be done—an entry per ever game you attended. UH don’t have to do this with every game; or they could.

I think Batoon need to recruit a “space eater” 1 technique so Taala can occupy other areas along the defensive front. I know he likes speed and he made Akoteu and Russell lose weight but to not have a 320 pounder available is bad, Maybe that player doesn’t need to be in the platoon rotation but at least have one in case you need him on goal line or obvious running packages (Air Force game). Can always use him on special teams too. Get one about 6-2 to 6-4 315 to 330 if can. If you cant pass rush with the DL at least stop the run.
UNLV may fire Sanchez, but they just opened their new $34 million dollar football complex named after the Fertitta Bros. UH………….. well, at least our 45 lbs plates weigh the same as theirs.

Rolo needs to grt to brass tacks with some of his Assist. Coaches. I dunno if all UH players are leaving it all on the field (which they NEED to do) after every game—they’re all smiling jacks, not exactky discombobulated after a game.
To Batoon . . Rolo needs to tell, “Batoon, don’t wait for the recruits you want to have. Don’t think of them as ‘from Coach Chow.’ That is simply counterproductive. Chevan showed how the run-and-shoot works. Your defense guys are off the field long enough to recover, for you to come up with a game plan while Chevan is slow-roasting the competition. No excuses now.”
To Stutzman . . . Rolo gotta tell him, “uh. You left something out of your daily reports to me on Chevan? You got me starting with McDonald every week here. We might have been Washington with Cordeiro starting. Come on now.”

#37: Thanks for sharing, Kawika. Interesting how the initial cost of the facility went from $22 million to $35 million in a matter of three years. Can someone say, “rail”? It’s a huge commitment from the school and an impressive facility built on 95 percent community dollars. That’s Rolo’s dream … in the lower campus practice field area near the dorms. Anyone got a spare $10 million to kick off fund-raising?
This year defense is Phase I. Learning how the scheme functions with all these variable, complex moving parts. Some players don’t really fit (like Se’ei, Williams, Mautautia, and even Padello) but are heart and soul players. The appearance will be way different next year. Most will fit and it shouldn’t look as clunky. Should seem more “sleek” and fluid. Then Batoon’s scheme can be more properly judged.
I think he needs immediate JC help at cover CB (Farris), FS (Okeke) big 2 gap NT (Taala so he can float), and DT (Hune) until the younger guys are ready. Maybe one speed JC soph to bridge the youth as well. The Defense is on the right track I think. Just not enough proper “fits” right now. And gotta make sure to develop 3 reliable playmakers off season (one will be Paul Scott guarantee). 3 of them. Padello was last year. Got none right now. Important and possible. Can do.
Our weak link this season seems to be the LBs. They should be the main tacklers and play makers. The line’s job is to take up blockers so the LBs can clean up. There seems to be lack of a big play LB like Tavai.
I hope Penei, Darius Muasau and Isiah Tufaga will be the 3 LBs next season. They all have size and speed. Matautia does not seems to have much foot speed and Pritchard is more of a inside LB type and does not possess sideline to sideline speed. Paul Scott can run but he is a little on the small side.
Thru 10 games our leading tackler have only 50 tackles. That is not a good numbers. Then 4 of the next 5 tacklers are dbs and one DE.
No easy games left for Warriors. Every game will be tough and close. Coming down the homestretchie, does the Warriors turn on the adrenaline or fold like a poker hand? If they want the divisuin crown, it is there and they will determine their destiny. Will watch and follow their destiny

I can kind of see why Rolo wanted Chevan to start. The sole reason was because of the way that SJSU’s Josh Love was playing, especially after the way SJSU gave Boise State all they handle. Not to mention, because of Cole’s performance against Fresno, especially where he only threw for 50 percent of his passes, especially the errant passes he dealt with (And missed).
And with the chance to a bowl game at risk, it was clear and evident that Rolo didn’t want to suffer another disappointing loss and make the road even more difficult, especially to a semi-losing team (And possibly a bowl contender). There’s no line in the sand, but at this point, thanks to the SJSU victory, with losses from Fresno and SDSU, there’s still hope for us now to be back in conference championship contention. At that point, all they need is one more win to qualify for a bowl berth, and maybe more for Rolo’s 2nd winning season.
Hopefully, luck will be on their side against UNLV, in which won’t be easy, much like in Reno, in which they haven’t won in 2007. But if the defense can continue to get stronger and better after this, they might have a chance to win.

Clyde #40: It’s not like there aren’t any wealthy people living in Hawaii. Appreciate what the Ching Family has done for UH and the community. On the other hand UH just doesn’t know how to approach and connect with these individuals. UNLV’s football complex even has a barber shop. Geez, they don’t even have a barber on the UH Manoa campus.
