Satele, Letuli cleared to practice

Linebacker Brashton Satele and offensive tackle Laupepa Letuli have received special waivers that will allow them to practice.

Both are seeking medical hardships that will enable to play as sixth-year seniors in 2010.

* * * * *

Another lively football practice this morning.

• The Warriors have had a king-of-the-hill competition at quarterback this spring. Based on Saturday’s practice, the quarterback order today was: 1) Bryant Moniz. 2) Brent Rausch. 3) David Graves. 4) Shane Austin. 5) Cayman Shutter and Corey Nielsen. The order might change for Wednesday’s practice.

• Safety Kenny Estes’ right arm was in a sling today. He has a shoulder injury, and there is no set return date. It is disappointing for Estes  because the Warriors will hold a scrimmage on Kauai Saturday. Estes is a Kauai resident.

• Right tackle Laupepa Letuli was back at practice today after returning from Los Angeles, where he attended UH’s Pro Day. Letuli still has not received a ruling from the NCAA on his appeal for a sixth year. Kainoa LaCount has been playing right tackle.

• Didn’t mean to slight Jett Jasper, but he, too, is competing for a starting berth at right wideout. Most of the reps, though, have gone to Royce Pollard and Billy Ray Stutzmann.

• Chizzy Dimude continues to impress at running back. Think Michael Brewster in terms of perimeter quickness and shifty moves.

* * * * * *

Cynthia Cooper has been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. That apparently is easier to do than being named a finalist for a UH coaching job. Last year, she did not receive an interview with the selection committee seeking a successor to Rainbow Wahine basketball coach Jim Bolla.

* * * * *

Gib Arnold is back in town — briefly.

He will meet with his entire team for the first time since he was hired as UH head coach a couple of weeks ago. Then he will be back on the road recruiting.

Good to see that Graves is making a push. I believe he is the QB of the future.

  2. Stephen Tsai April 5, 2010 10:53 am

Had a nice chat with Graves today. He’s a fascinating player. And, if you close your eyes, he sounds like somebody who used to wear No. 15 in Manoa. (No, not Lono Manners.)

    Carried over from earlier:

CONGRATS TO KATIE GRIMES FOR WINNING THIS WEEK’S “WAC HITTER OF THE WEEK” HONOR!!!

Grimes, a senior catcher from Tampa, Fla., hit .556 with a 1.667 slugging percentage and .636 on-base percentage as the Rainbow Wahine swept New Mexico State on the road last week. The ninth batter in the line-up, she drove in a team-high eight runs and hit a team-high three home runs over the three games. In the first game of the series, Grimes started UH’s home run barrage with a two-run homer in the third inning to break open a scoreless game. In the following inning, she came through with a two-out, RBI single for her third RBI of the game. In the second game of the series, Grimes launched a career-high two homers and scored a career-high three runs in the 14-3 win. She also threw out the only attempt at a stolen base by the Aggies. In the series finale, Grimes had a bases-clearing double that helped lift UH to a five-inning, 13-1 win.

i caught a little bit of practice and noticed that the punter shanked quite a bit of kicks this morning… hope tormey is working with him on consistency…

Oh wait! “Used” to wear #15 ok ok… 😉

  10. d1島 April 5, 2010 11:08 am

From what I have observed and heard, consistency in punting has a lot to do with the drop. And that only gets better with reps.

    I agree with Braddah Ajoe!

  15. Kekoa (iPhone) April 5, 2010 11:27 am

Way to go ST! Jett Jasper deserves an honorable mention. I’ve seen this kid take a huge lickin’ and keep on ticken’! Never loses focus and hangs on to the ball after getting whacked.

He may not be as highly regarded as the other receivers, but I’m sure lots of Kauai peeps will turn out to welcome him home.

ST, you must stay over for dinner at their family eatery. Too bad aunty Liz won’t be there to introduce you to his mom, or the UH cookie lady.

  17. Kendall April 5, 2010 11:31 am

Does anybody know this? If a basketball player went to a Div. II school and redshirted his one season there and decided he wanted to go to a Div. I school, would he have to sit out another year?

The reason I ask is that there is a player at Chaminade Mammadou Diarra who attend USC two seasons ago. He came to Chaminade last year, but sat out the entire season. Now that we got Coach Arnold (who Diarra is familiar with) if Diarra came to UH, would he have to sit out another year?

    ST do you know?

  18. LizKauai (Chrome) April 5, 2010 11:34 am

    Hiya!

    AYAH for Kenny Estes!
Yeehaa for Jett Jasper! and not just for football. He’s up for repping the students with the Regents, right?

  24. Pomai April 5, 2010 11:43 am

I mentioned this the other day at practice, but there is one other thing that graves does that reminds me of #15, he takes his helmet off after every play and if you watch colt he does the same thing, I know, WTH does that have to do with anything, the answer is nothing.

  25. al April 5, 2010 11:44 am

time for lunch…food for thought before the leftover prime rib disappears.

we should seriously invite the jasper’s to our tailgaters. perhaps they could bring their world reknowned “slavonic steak”?

  26. J-Dog April 5, 2010 11:58 am

    Chizzy looked good last year.

Kinda wish they would have redshirted him last season (if he hadn’t already used it).

Hoping Green and Chizzy stay healthy. A nice 1-2 punch in the running game.

  27. puuloke April 5, 2010 12:22 pm

Our running backs need to be blockers first, then runners, then pass catchers, and it’s definitely not Green or Dimude!!!!

  28. Slugger April 5, 2010 12:44 pm

Sorry to hear that Kenny Estes is sporting an arm sling. Get well soon!

Saw Jett catch passes at practice last week. Alex Green also can catch passes. Coach Tormey worked with the running backs last season on blocking. I’m sure they’ll get some instruction on blocking.

  29. RedZone April 5, 2010 12:51 pm

Chizzy is going to make em dizzy.

I like the tandem of Haku on the right with Vaughn on the left.

Looks like number one at qb will by number one at the end of spring barring injury. The battle for number 2 is just as important. We need at least 2 who can start.

Hope all turns out well for him.

UH FOOTBALL SEASON TICKET RENEWAL UPDATE:

    No mo. 😡

Just called the UH ticket office and looks like it will be “probably at the end of the month”.

  33. mailepua April 5, 2010 1:01 pm

According to Aggie techs, they dont provide a live stat feed bc its softball field is located in a “dead zone”. If anyone is attending in Logan and can tweet periodic live results so it can be posted on the UH website that would be greatly appreciated by all that follow the wahine.

  34. d1島 April 5, 2010 1:13 pm

    mailepua,

Maybe Bulla can confirm that all of Logan is a “dead zone”!

    heheheh

  35. Manoa Mist April 5, 2010 1:18 pm

I thought Chizzy showed happy feet last year, even in his limited playing time. You cannot teach happy feet, you either have that quickness or you don’t. Gotta get people with happy feet on the field. Appreciate the spring reports Mr. Tsai.

  36. Bulla April 5, 2010 1:22 pm

    mailepua,

logan Utah? with the configuration of the mountain pass restricting access all the time, and especially in bad weather, it would be tough to get anything live to come out of there. coach chad offered ryan a scholarship as soon as he was named Dline coach…..but why would i do that to my son? it would be as bad as taking the offer from University of Wyoming in Laramie……both are great locations if you’re in the Federal Witness Protection program, or just trying to be on the outskirts of civilization. nice places, but sheeeesh……..hard to fathom.

  37. Bulla April 5, 2010 1:26 pm

    RedZone,

I agree on the match up with Vaughn and Haku. Vaughn looks to have a very nice mean streak in him, is that an oxymoron? but he looks good, has to stay healthy. Haku is getting his reps, his off season workouts have paid dividends.

another kid that is impressing is Mahoe, very stout, great strength and good vision. Masch looks ok, just not off the charts yet. All of the D line is trying hard and getting good reps.

  38. Jack Flash April 5, 2010 1:50 pm

Hoping for a quick recovery for Kenny Estes. Also hoping that coach TH’s offseason conditioning program helps reduce injuries this year.

  39. jm2375 April 5, 2010 1:55 pm

    Bulla – #36 – 😆

Another note on UH Senior Nights – keed was surprised that Nejc remembered her name! All the guys are great, even with teenage stalkers girls.

  40. Derek April 5, 2010 2:02 pm

Probably, Colt Brennan was gladly willing to give his Jersey #5 to McNabb and get his former #15 at UH. If McNabb gave something in return to Colt, maybe McNabb gave a year’s supply of beef stew that he and his mom used to promote. Hehe! Hey, just the fact that Colt can get a jersey at Washington at least there’s some hope that Shanahan will keep him on as a 2nd or 3rd string QB. I suspect that maybe June Jones spoke w/ Shanahan about Colt and put in a good word about Colt. Remember, June Jones is good friends w/ Denver Broncos’ Pat Bowlen and Mike Shanahan when Jones went to bat for Ashley Lelie who Denver picked him in the first round. Lelie had a couple of good years w/ the Broncos before he started to ask for more money and make things difficult. After that, it was history.

  41. Downtownwarrior April 5, 2010 2:28 pm

Hey Bulla you right Ikaika Mahoe impressing me to just like a pitbull strong kid good football skill should be up there with Haku and Vaughn on the D line kenny estes hope you get better .

  42. mailepua April 5, 2010 2:33 pm

Im not trying to mock Logan, Utah–just trying to follow
the wahine softball team. USUAD does have live stats for other sports so its not entirely accurate to say ” it would be tough to get anything live to come out of there”. The weather isnt bad but the temp was dropping below 40 and could snow.

  43. ai-eee-soos April 5, 2010 2:39 pm

    re # 40.

Whatever happened to Ashley Lelie? If he’s still active and a free agent, he should try to hook up with Shanahan.

At the aloha oe press conference for Lelie, Shanahan said that Ashley was a good kid, but received bad advice (from his agent?).

Anybody know wha hoppened to Lelie?

  47. Old School Dave April 5, 2010 3:33 pm

Good luck to the Warriors this season. The team seems more focused, motivated, hungry, not to mention bigger, faster, stronger, and healthier. Directly a result of Coach Heffernan’s training program and supervision. Stay healthy during the spring and get acclimated to more full speed contact and collisions.

On another note, I didn’t know that Utah State now has an indoor practice facility:

    http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700021465/Utah-State-Aggies-football-gallery.html

Agree, not much to do there except go to class, study, practice, train, and wait for the Spring to come.

much mahalo again for the belated wishes.

  73. Derek April 5, 2010 6:19 pm

Recruits we still need. 1) A really good point guard who can handle the ball, create, and hit shots. 2) A swing man who can drive, dunk, and make shots (versatility and jumping ability around 6’5″ to 6’7″. 3) A rebounder and inside scoring, not necessarily a center, but at least a power forward like 6’8″ or 6’9″. 4) Another versatile player or good defensively, if Ji Xiang graduates and a scholarship comes available. 5) A big man if more scholarship comes available if a couple of existing players are released from their scholarships.

Can we get one or two of the twin towers from Senegal? Can we get a big man from College of Southern Idaho? Can we get a player from Brazil from their Junior National Team? We will find out soon enough.
    Let’s pray!!!!!

Butler almost did it. You could say they lost on free throw shooting, especially in the first half. It was a great game. And Hayward almost made the three pointer at the buzzer. It could have been a movie of all time, but maybe it still should be a movie and be a great story. Coach Brad Stevens is being pursued by Oregon, but I don’t think he would leave his young players and the fact that he’s from Indiana would keep him at Butler. Butler will probably give him a raise anyway. Great story and the Bulldogs will be coming to the Diamond Head Classic in December. Maybe the Rainbow Warriors can create their own good feeling story next season!!!!!

  74. aaronavilla April 5, 2010 6:28 pm

Shanahan trashed Lelie in the media when contract talks started. Lelie held out because it was a contract year and he knew his market value would drop because his numbers were destined to go down because they dumbed down the offense big time to protect Jake Plummer from himself. Shanahan’s plan worked, as everyone thinks Lelie is a selfish, greedy guy now. If you look at the offensive statistics from that season and the previous season, passing attempts, yards, and TDs for the team dropped big time, but rushing attempts, yards, and TDs went way up. it wasn’t so much of a drop in production, but a change in offensive philosophy. Too bad they were too predictcable and sucked in the playoffs. it’s been a downward spiral for denver since then.

  75. al April 5, 2010 6:29 pm

koakane…happy birthday, again. that makes you older than me now.

ncaa granting waivers to practice probably means that they just need to process some paperwork and its a done deal. having those two back is like getting two first round picks.

now lets pray for their health.

  84. protector April 5, 2010 7:44 pm

Kazz on # 32, re: Season tickets for UH football

Thanks for asking. You know, it really galls me that UH insists on having someone on the mainland print up the football tickets because they claim it’s cheaper. Is that really possible considering shipping charges, etc.? And why is it that 3 out of the last 4 years (or maybe 4 of 5) I still didn’t have my ticket on the Wednesday or Thursday preceding the 1st home game. When I reported it, they always wanted me to wait another day. Sometimes they were able to print up (replacement) tickets within a day or so. If they can do it that fast, what the heck?
Anybody know the real scoop on this?

  85. d1島 April 5, 2010 7:53 pm

    Francis Maka update.

The Arkansas Diamonds entered their bye week with a 4-1 record and the Eastern Division lead in the Intense Conference of the Indoor Football League.

Leading the way for the Diamonds on defense are Arizona State’s Luis Vasquez, Little Rock McClellan’s Tyler “Superman” Knight, former Arkansas Razorback Vickiel Vaughn and Hawaii’s Frances Maka.

Re: Logan, Utah? Must be a pretty interesting place to go to school. People have said the same kinds of humorous things about such places harboring land grant state schools like Pullman, Aimes, and Las Cruces. But trust me, as a one who has been to one of these schools, students ALWAYS find a way to make college fun. GARANZ these schools good fun and their alumz have nothing but great memories about the place.

I graduated in malodorriffus Greeley, CO. Home of the largest animal feedlots and slaughterhouses in the world! Take a wiff, that bugguh is the scent of prosperity so the locals say. BIK,

LOL at your description of UNCO (unfortunate abbreviation). When we went with #2 son to their reception we asked about that “issue.”
The reply was, “All the buildings are air-conditioned.” 😆

  95. protector April 5, 2010 9:38 pm

    ST on # 89,

Thanks for the clarification. Still seems inequitable. It’s a pity as I’ve said before that the NCAA is really not about justice, equity or just doing something because it’s the right thing to do. They do what is most profitable & expedient for them-OK, I’ll stop .

  96. protector April 5, 2010 9:42 pm

    ST,

The special waivers for Pepa & Brashton seem like half-measures. Does it mean that it is very likely that they will get the 6th year, or is it still not a guaranteed thing. I know we should at least be happy that they can practice, but it would be cruel to allow that & then pull the rug-sorry, I have a very low opinion & level of trust of the NCAA.

  97. protector April 5, 2010 9:51 pm

    BIK on # 92,

The local boys always got a lot of aloha for everybody, but don’t want to see that aloha against USC. Wanna see that Kauai, Maui, Oahu, Lanai (we got any boyz from Lanai?) and Big-Island RAGE against dem Trojans!! Like they said in that memorable movie..Leave no doubt!

  98. Ralph April 5, 2010 9:57 pm

if Brashton and Pepa returns will their return impact the 85 limit, last minute grey shirting of incoming players?

Footballs in the air again and the 2010 Warrior road game dates has been known a while. Time to start assembling what Tsai-kos are planning to attend mainland games this year. The usual planning and logistics page is up at:

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/away10.html

At this time, post here or email if you plan or hope to attend some road games. Details can follow later as plans and reservations firm up.

99club — your yahoo email address starting with “j” has bounced twice. Please send me your new address. I vaguely recall you were planning to attend a couple games.

Busy, busy day tomorrow – or later on today, to be accurate

Wahine softball ranked 22 in UCS Top 25 Poll.

On the eve of a three game series on the road with the Utah State Aggies in near freezing temperatures, Hawaii’s red-hot Wahine (28-11, 6-0) will find a little warmth in their selection to a prestigious top 25 ranking.
The poll consists of a panel of college softball coaches selected by Ultimate College Softball (UCS).
    Other ranked Wahine opponents:
    #1 Wash
    #3 Ariz
    #9 Stanford
    #13 Calif
    #25 Lipscomb

Kelly Majam (20) and her teammates are the D1A leaders in HRs (80).
    Congrads to our Wahine!

  117. mctruck April 6, 2010 3:51 am

Butler tried real hard and I am proud for their efforts. However, Duke had those taller players who overpowered Butler’s shorter players. Had my finger’s crossed for an upset even though in the back of my mind I knew it was a long shot at best.
Still, for Butler to get to the finals was testament to such an exceptional team and coaches. A Gonzaga of the east, you might say.

BOULDER, Colo. — Cody Hawkins doesn’t need to ask Dan Hawkins for an update on where he stands in the quarterback competition. Neither does fellow candidate Tyler Hansen, and he’s not asking offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau either, who said the competition will likely last until fall.

They don’t need to. All either needs to do is take a glance at The Chart—the one keeping track of every single throw they make at any point during a practice.

  119. d1島 April 6, 2010 5:47 am

USU Softball Series Opener With No. 25 Hawai`i Snowed Out

LOGAN, Utah – Over six inches of snow in Logan led to the cancellation of the softball series opener between Utah State and No. 25 Hawai`i Tuesday. The game was the fourth in the last two weeks to be cancelled or postponed for Utah State, including a road doubleheader against BYU on March 31 and the series finale between USU and Nevada on April 3.
The Aggies and the Rainbow Wahine are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 7. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. (MT).

A helicopter is scheduled to hover above the field Wednesday morning in an attempt to further dry off the field from Monday’s snow storm.

  146. Don Weir April 6, 2010 9:05 am

    SteveM and Tsaiko Road Travellers,
I was asked by UHAD to coordinate some road information (and be the ground contact) on the following games/venues:
    1. West Point
    2. Las Vegas in between games 2 & 3
    3. Boulder Colorado

I will be posting the information here as well as sending it out to all of the e-mail contacts that were assembled over the last year.

    Ticket information will follow.

    As of right now:
    1. West Point will have a very interesting tailgate on the Academy grounds prior to the game. This will be put on by the UHAA. It looks as though tailgate continental b’fast, then watch the cadet parade formations, then serious food/beverage tailgate (all one ticket)
    2. I am looking for a venue for Football Alumni and supporters post game
    3. Coach McMackin has agreed to come down to the CAL in LV on Wednesday of the in-between week and give fans/supporters a Quarterback type review of the West Point game and a brief look at Boulder. This is a fundraiser for the Na Koa Endowment. It is in the early planning stages but Boyd Gaming is a great supporter so look for a great evening.
    4. Boulder is hosting the Colorado Aloha Fest, game weekend. There is a Ho’ike with Frank Hewitt and Daniel Ho on campus on Friday. Special rates at the Comfort Inn so go to the Na Koa website or go to the Colorado Aloha Fest website for more information on this.
    5. UHAA is again hosting the UH tailgate before this game. More information on this as plans develop.
    6. I am working on the post game reception for FB Alumni and all supporters very near the stadium. Again, a little early for specific venue and times but the information will be here asap. This is a great opportunity for you to talk UH Football story with some of the great names out of the past.

Tiki’s in Waikiki just sent me an e-mail. All proceeds from the Warrior Pride cocktails (margaritas) at their Cinco de Mayo celbration will go to the Na Koa Endowment.

  147. d1島 April 6, 2010 9:39 am

  148. quagmiregiggity April 6, 2010 10:40 am

First time poster. Someone earlier asked about the Diarra kid from Chaminade. I have some knowledge about this guy. Yes, if he transfers up from D2 to D1, he still has to sit out. However, he redshirted this past season and if he were to come to UH, he’d have to sit out another year. Don’t think he wants to do that. Also, he would’ve played this year, but someone who works at Chaminade said that USC refused to release Diarra from his scholarship. So he had to sit out this year, even though it was from D1 down to D2. Hope this clarifies things.

It doesn’t matter how rare the fault is, or how well the car runs most of the time, eventually something can go wrong – and when it does, you often find yourself having to hand over plenty of cash to get it repaired.
