FINAL: No. 21 Hawaii (18-3, 8-2 Big West) avenged a five-set defeat to UC Irvine earlier this month with a 27-25, 25-17, 25-21 sweep of the Anteaters (4-16, 1-7) on Saturday at the Bren Events Center.

The R2 tonight (Jesse Martinez?) has been an R1 for some Hawaii matches…buckle up. He calls it rather ragged, especially net and center line violations are not called.

Next weekend is a really BIG weekend with UCSB and Cal Poly coming to town!
I think coach Rob has a good plan in keeping a the balance with her players in knowing when to sub, etc. It was a nice win on the road with many players contributing.
Our serving really came through tonight especially Norene and Bailey. When we serve aggressively, we usually do well. Amber and Sky were terrific especially on the block of Ofoegbu. Really like seeing the adjustment by Ross to hit what she is given. Her play has improved so much in such a short span. This was a great weekend for UH – volleyball and football. Where the UH men volleyball team at the match?
Oh man…that No. 20 Purdue’s gonna have a BIG change in the ranks with this Nebraska loss. Coupled that with USC upsetting No. 15 Cal in 5 yesterday, that could mean Hawaii will either move up or down by a small amount. However, Utah’s upset over No. 9 Washington could be where it gets tricky. It’s probably going to be a rough rank change after this week. Hopefully, Hawaii can at least move up with the Irvine and Fullerton wins.
Well…Akana (-.333) and Hellvig (-.027) didn’t have their best performances in the sweep against UCI, despite UCI having two players in double figures with kills and Hawaii having no player in double figures with kills.
The only reason Hawaii bailed the two out was with Hanawahine and Choy, each with 4 aces (With the team combined for 12 aces altogether), and their 13 blocks. Not to mention the amount of service pressure they gave UCI, something that they didn’t show in their 5-set loss.
But it shows that even the young players can learn from this and learn to work more harder. Man does IT feel good to have Brooke back. Now the only concern is if they can get Rasmussen back for offense and to get this team to keep up with both Cal Poly and UCSB next week.
As expected, UH’s unofficial RPI rank fell to 17 after tonight’s matches.
Cal Poly beat UC Davis 25-19, 28-26 and 25-11. That second set was a nail-biter and Cal Poly had to play catch-up there. Then I watched the ESPN3 replay match between UH & Irvine. Brian Gimillaro, former Long Beach coach and now color commentator thinks that three Big West teams could make it to the NCAA first round. I think it could happen only if UH, Cal Poly and UCSB all ended up with 14 wins and 2 losses. It’s not mathematically possible. UH can win out all the rest of its matches for a 14-2 score. If UCSB loses to UH and then at Cal Poly on the road, but wins the rest of its matches, it will be 13-3. Likewise, if Cal Poly loses to UH and then to UCSB at home, but wins the rest of its matches, it, too will be 13-3 and thus UH will win the Big West Championship. tied with the winner between Cal Poly & UCSB at 14-2. Thus I disagree with Brian Gimillaro. At best only two Big West teams can make it to the playoffs. I don’t think that three teams will tie each other.
Hawaii’s not staying home with three conference losses.
A little off topic, but was checking out YouTube and decided to search for Lidingö, Stockholm (believe this is where Hanna is from, someone correct me if I am wrong). It is an amazingly beautiful island. Check it out if you have some time. You won’t be disappointed.

As for the RPI, you can control only what you can control. which is your W-L record and who you schedule.
Men’s basketball has tossed the RPI because of the opponents’ opponents factor. Be nice if volleyball did the same.

I checked the stats from the two matches that UCSB played today and Thursday to see if Lindsey Ruddins could make Big West Player of the Week and now most definitely she will garner a record 12 this coming Monday. In both matches she hit over 0.500, 18 and 20 kills, respectively. If she keeps this up, UCSB could defeat Cal Poly on Nov. 9th, thus snapping a 29-match home winning streak (provided that Cal Poly beats CSUN next Tuesday). UH will need to block her again very effectively next Friday to win. Seems likely that UH and UCSB will share the Big West title with UH winning the tiebreaker and the automatic bid provided that UH wins out the rest of the season and UCSB does so after this coming Friday.
Leading teams in standing get better and better with season and both CalPoly and Santa Barbara showed fluid offense against Davis, and could STING wahine unsurprisingly, unless wahine get strengthened with JR, at least, in critical phases of the games. Both these opponents are top 50 RPI and two wins against them will boost wahines’ RPI to get back over 16. Please use wahines’ post-season team strategically, to manage each game on coming weekend.
I agree with #28. We need to put the most powerful team in the floor. Coaches tend to not want to mess with the line up when this are going well but hitting these low numbers against such bad teams is not going to equate to success against higher quality teams.

20. If Hawaii wins the rest of their matches, they will get the automatic berth into the NCAA’s based on the tiebreaker rules.
Brian Gimillaro was right when he said that 3 BW teams could make it into the NCAA’s. As islandman stated, it’s based on RPI, not where you finish in the conference standings. Right now it looks like Hawaii, UCSB, and Cal Poly will all have RPIs high enough to get an at large bid if they don’t win the conference and get the automatic bid.

31. They are playing the freshmen. The changes that have happened.
With both Van Sickle and Rasmussen out, they have used Westerberg/Akana (both freshmen) at OH/opp. and Wagoner.
With Van Sickle in, that moves Wagoner out of the front. but she has come in to serve.
Guess my point is you only have so many spots on the court.
