Pros and cons
There was an interesting debate yesterday between a scout and a coach over the value of a pro day. The scout had argued that the “grades are in” before the pro day. The coach argued that a standout pro day performance can boost a player’s stock, citing how Ryan Mouton was selected in the third round last year. The scout argued that teams knew Mouton could play from his work against Florida in the 2008 UH opener. The coach argued that Mouton’s 11-foot long jump sealed the deal.
And so it went.
Both were correct. Yes, the grades might be in, but they also can be changed and, to further a bad analogy, the enrollment period does not end until draft day. Teams needing to fill training-camp rosters needed to see some of the UH prospects in person, particularly those who have limited work on video. Perhaps the most helpful aspect of yesterday’s UH Pro Day was when line coach Gordy Shaw gave scouts his analysis of linemen Laupepa Letuli, Ray Hisatake, Aaron Kia and Raphael Ieru. Later, the scouts were able to see those players perform drills testing blocking and awareness.
Did that help? Sure. Did it change the players’ stock? Well, at least there’s more information — positive information, as it turned out.
Wideout Jovonte Taylor, who ran a 4.34 in the 40 (with a tight hamstring), and running back Daniel Libre, who had the top performance in three categories, are intriguing prospects for teams who go by the numbers.
The thing I liked most is that UH made the most to promote its players. Deep down, every recruit wants a shot at the big time, which is why many choose the Warriors’ offense or attacking defense. The UH coaches are doing their part to help, even if many are chasing impossible dreams. The players might not end up with NFL jobs, but they won’t have regrets, either.

If the polls closed today, Charlie Wade would be the volleyball coach of the year. He’s done that good of a job. He has the right coaches doing specific work, and he cured two big weaknesses of the previous two years: poor passing and inconsistent serving.
To be sure, opposite attacker Jonas Umlauft has factored in the improvement. He was trumpeted as the next Yuval Katz — a comparison because he is playing Katz’s position. But Katz was the go-to hitter on an athletic team with good ball-control players. Umlauft, in contrast, is a good ball-control player. His ability to pass eases the pressure on libero Ric Cervantes and left-side hitter Steven Hunt. Also, because Umlauft is a threat on trouble balls and out of the back right, that opens the way for Joshua Walker on the other side. Umlauft’s value is in helping to make his teammates better. In that regard, he is everything the Warriors needed this year.

Hows the weather in Manoa? Kalaheo is raining this morning. I asked Vaughn if he was able to come home to help pour concrete for the carport and garage for the rental were making but I forgot he had spring training. I hear good things coming from Manoa, from the way the kids are conditioned and stuff to the attitude on the field. I hope to make it to a few practices this month. The team are coming to Kauai next Saturday so that’s one less trip I have to make. I got to meet Bulla (online) I heard he’s a funny guy. Anyways , have a good weekend and pray for sun.

it is true that CHarlie Wade is doing a good job…BUT, and its a big one, it must be remembered that none of these guys are his players. Umlauft was recruited by Mike & Tino, if he can sustain this year’s success once he brings in his own players will tell us more.

In reply to comment #14, that’s whats impressive to me.
He is turning a team full of players that finished in the bottom of the MPSF two years in a row, into winners. This team won no road matches last season, and while Umlauft is a big help the rest of the players have improved greatly.
I think the team will be even better when Wade gets a few recruiting classes in. He and his staff are aggresive recruiters and have already signed a middle on the Junior national team from Florida.

It is a valid point to say that it will be something else to see Coach Wade’s own recruits perform at a high level, but at the same time one cannot deny what Coach Wade has done with kids that were from another volleyball mentality.
Coach Wade may not have recruited Walker, Cervantes, Umlauft, Nejc, Rawson, etc… but still to introduce them into a whole new approach to the game that has been very exciting and competitive compared to seasons past is nothing short of remarkable especially considering the quick transition from one season to another. We go from worrying about making the playoffs to being on the brink of hosting!!!

I was pleasantly surprised that the HA sprang for ST trip to the UH Pro Day. Given the state of arrears that the HA is in, I didn’t think it was a priority for them in sending ST to cover the UH Pro Day. This may or may not be his last carnival ride, but you never know. Hopefully it’s not. Just wanted to say ahead of time in acknowledgments, in case a month or two months from now, there’s no bog or articles by ST that I do appreciate his work, including the WB show w/Leila, and especially of his apparent humbleness, witticisms.and tolerance for a wayward poster.
although i do like men’s vb, it’s not one of my very favorite UH sports. (football #1, basketball #2, w soccer #3, w volley #4, etc). What really like about this years mvb team is the adjustments that the coaches make, either during the game, or preparing for the follow up game the next night. This shows good coaching. The football team’s ability to do this was lacking. Maybe it was the organizational part with the coaches. Case in point: i’m not positive but, didn’t we “lose” every 3rd quarter and most 4th quarters? This to me, seems like a lack of organization among the coaches. Head coach Mac needs to organize the coaches so that they come to a better conclusion at half time, thus taking over the game in the second half. I believe that we DO have talented coaches, its just a matter of putting it all together, with the HC making the final decisions. The HC should have a clue during the game by talking with the OC and DC. or just by his experience in coaching, to put something together at half time for the second half. Something that seems minor was posted yesterday, in which all the coaches were wearing different types of clothing at practice. The coaches should at least, look organized with this being a multi million dollar comodity.
From what I’ve read, it seems like John Estes is the only guy from last year’s team that has a shot of being selected in the late rounds of the draft. Regardless of the scout versus the coach debate, I am sure that there are those who have received at least free agent contracts based on outstanding Pro Day performances who otherwise would have never gotten a call. I am wondering if someone like Jovonte will actually get that chance for a free agent contract based on his Pro Day performance and whether someone like Blaze may still get a free agent contract, despite his hamstring pull, based on what scouts may have already known about him. I am glad to hear about the efforts that the coaches made for their former players.

The anticipation continues…
The Wahine head up to Las Cruces to face another team with a great team batting average, one that actually surpasses the Wahine. SJSU also had the same gaudy stats as well, but good pitching from Stephanie Ricketts put a stop to that and so did the improved play of the infield. SJSU really had about two players that could crush it, but NMSU has MORE and not to mention the thin air over there.
That thin air has to have our batters drooling and Kelly Majam doing some Google Maps Satellite search of the nearest tennis courts on NMSU’s campus.
A shootout perhaps?
Nah! I’d expect Parnaby to have a better series than she did against SJSU in that lone outing and Stephanie Ricketts finds herself in the thick of WAC competition which is something she’s done before. 😎
How do you stop home runs? Easy. PITCHING.
How do you have/maintain good pitching outside of the pitcher herself? Easy. Maintain a steady performance in the infield. Well… Easier said than done.

Automatic Payroll Deduction Information News
I had a conversation with the CFO of the UH Foundation yesterday. The Foundation does not provide automatic payroll deduction activites from non-UHF employees. There is no plan to provide this service in the future as the Foundation is not set up for this function.
As outlined before there are several work arounds.
1. Auto deduction from an personal existing account into a personal savings account specifically set up to support UH Athletics on your own. Set it up so every quarter the bank sends a check to the University of Hawaii Foundation “UH Foundation (name of sports program or endowment)”
2. See if your company has a matching donation program, to a 501 (c) (3), and do a payroll deduction where your company sends a check a month to UH Foundation (above).
3. Contact a bank or credit union (I recommend contacting Scott Kaulukukui of Hawaii USA Federal Credit Union or Corbett Kamoa Kalama/Mitch Kai’alii of First Hawaiian) to explore how this may be done across the state.
This is my 10th season covering men’s volleyball, and I really find it to be a fascinating sport. I didn’t feel that way in the beginning. But Coach Wilton and then Charlie have made it easy for the media.
The practices are always open, and the players are accessible right after matches. Also, the coaches are really good about explaining their strategies. I can understand why football and basketball coaches can get the war-room mentality. But volleyball is a close-community sport, and these guys, while competitive, also have a lot of history with opponents.

I hope the wahine don’t fall into that thin air trap. sometimes when UH goes to thin air country in all sports, they either lose it psychologically or press themselves and try go go for the fences and lose the focus on what needs to be done.
I hope SB management is not reading the blog. I’m sure the $800-$1,000 to cover a one day event like Pro Day could be better spent covering other things. But maybe that’s why Gannett is selling – bad decisions.
Then again if SB management is not reading the blog, they’ll cancel it for sure.

The question should be why would the owner of SB bring over the same management who has lost money over the last few years to run something that has been making money? Not sure what the Wahine’s record at Las Cruces is, but the thin air is always a factor for our teams. More so in Reno though, as the Nevada softball squad is quite formidable in general. The overall series record against NMSU is pretty good and our Wahine have faced FAR better competition in the preseason on the road in Vegas and in Cali than what NMSU had.
If Coach Coolen preaches to “sweat the small stuff” then preparation for such conditions would be expected.
Is it just me or did Nate Ilaoa’s numbers look pretty good?
What’s the best place to watch practice? Is picture taking allowed?
There is only one side you can watch practice at. If at the grass fields, then on the mauka sideline on the grass hill and if at Ching Field, it’s on the bleachers.
Last I recall, no photography allowed except for media and people with credentials. Again, last I recall and I don’t take photos so I don’t pay attention to details like that.
With USC being UH’s first opponent of the season, it might interest people to know who was their #1 center in practice yesterday…
Abe’s current backup has very little experience…
Boy, I can’t imagine what the Beast wouldn’t do to get on the field if *that* center plays for USC!

I was sitting with a friend who left half way through and was left sitting by myself towards the end (such a loner…haha). Actually, I wouldn’t know who they are if they talked to me as I have never met any of the tsaikos at all…the only tsaiko that I know by face is the Grandmaster of them all, which by the way, I have never met myself. Only have seen him.
Addition to #66…I had forgotten to include who the QB (Moniz) and RB (Green) is.

The sad part of the rankings are the ‘UH’ factor or perhaps the Rodney Dangerfield syndrome where they “can’t get no respect”. Imagine if our guys had played for PAC-10 teams or the Big-12 perhaps…I’m sure that they would’ve ranked in the top 20 (maybe with one exception) just as others with Hawaii high school ties (that went away) were ranked.
I dont wanna count the chickens before they hatch but mbb recruit Godwin Okonji from Findlay Prep… – The Ron Artest type of player we need. On the fence but i think Gib has got him leaning.
Gib has gotta feel good about his chances of getting this kid. Findlay Prep plays a national televised game on EPSN tomorrow morning.

The O-line should be good if they can only avoid injuries. If they get ‘Pepa back, all the better, but they’d still do okay if it doesn’t happen. Opponents know all about UH’s passing game… what I hope is it’ll be awhile before they find out about Hawaii’s potential power-running attack. I think having that potential fits into Coach Rolo & Coach Mack’s attacking philosophy and Coach Shaw is greasing the wheels.
I am a huge coach Shaw fan – his unit will be ready!

#87,,,i have to disagree with that statement. hawaii has sent more than its share of lineman to the nfl.
lauvao, alualu, teo-nesheim were all in the top three in there hawaii recruits class because they were talented and had the proper size. they would have been highly rated even if they stayed home.

I really hope Brashton gets his 6th year approved.
I don’t have confidence in Heun and Lolotai. Paredes wasn’t that great either.

What gets you to the next level is playing time. Sitting on pine wood just makes your butt sore. Many players who go away find they will have to sit for four years. I remember talking to a guy whose daughter was an all-state soccer player who went to the mainland. She was complaining that girls who went to UH were playing and getting more recognition than her. To his dismay I pointed out that if his daughter didn’t play until she was a senior the UH players who played four years will pass her by. He sadly agreed.
BTW,
With Trevor Wiseman and &Jordan Coleman coming in to join Hiram, Zane, Milovic(?) & Bill Amis (and also if they keep Lay), I anticipate that Coach Gib can keep his promise of an exciting, fast-break / high scoring offense. Wiseman & Coleman seem gifted with all-round skills & abilities; very versatile. The team shouldn’t struggle as much to help Hiram getting the ball down the court. It should also mean that full-court presses and traps should be less effective, too. I would think with the recruits being quick-handed ball-hawks that like to create turnovers that the D should improve also.

Going with your thought, I wonder how long it’ll be before Ioane sets foot on the blue turf at Boise and when some of the prized & coveted 2010 recruits for U-Dub will get significant PT there? I truly hope it’s not too soon, especially for Ioane because it would gall me if he’s a thorn in UH’s side for the next 4 years.

I sure hope Hiram doesn’t leave. Could it be Milovic? I can’t see it ever being him or Zane, because they’ve already sat-out a year. Xiang is gone, so who is left? Lay? It may be harsh to say, but I don’t think too many would mind if Williams left. Other than them, weren’t the rest walk-ons?
And re: Zane J, I totally agree he can be an impact player. I can see Hiram, Zane & Bill along with Trevor & Jordan – that starting five can do some damage. I would hope our turnovers would decrease and that there should be an increase in steals & caused-turnovers. Question would be how well they can rebound as a team. My guess is they would do fine because they’re smart players & for sure Bill can rebound. Already salivating and it’s so far away!
i am just perplexed that the team captain has not made a statement regarding the new coaching regime.
it will be interesting as to who will not be asked back to the land of rainbows and warriors. a new coach can release anyone he wants to who was on scholie.

WOW!!! Three men from Maui will be in the major league this year, Shane V, Kurt S, and now Kanekoa Texeira. They are carrying on the baseball tradition from the Valley Isle which dates back to Wally Y, Andy Miyamoto, John Sardinha, Bobby Martin. UH has 2 players from the past who are very active with youth baseball, Jon Viela and Kahai Shishido, so if UH was truly interested in getting baseball players, those 2 would be a good start on getting future players.

My son has gone to the baseball clinics run by Trapasso and his players. Very few outer island kids attend. I guess it’s difficult financially for most families. Alot of the kids came from private schools. Only 3 from Maui went; 1 high schooler from Kamehameha Maui, 1 middle schooler, and my son from elementary (KMS, too). It’s a great way for Coach to get to know the kids and follow them as they develop. The kid from KMS drew oohs and ahs in the batting cage.

When advertising and circulation sales are down, you need to find other means to do an effective job of reporting. Jeff Portnoy is going to the Final Four and writing a column for the paper. The Advertiser is not paying him the same wages they would pay their own writer.

Congratulations to the BaseBows & the VolleyBows tonight! That 4th game was too close for comfort , though.
Great baseball game – because the Basebows won – but the failure to bring the runners around to home plate made it very frustrating to watch.
Congratulations to Coach Charlie and the men’s volleyball team for their win tonight. Am watching the replay as I write.
Tomorrow night we’ll be at the volleyball match live for Senior Night while a good friend & a Capitol colleague and his 12-year-old son will be using our baseball tickets.
No one answered my earlier question: Which Big City Diner is the site of the Saturday post-practice CC – the one in Kaimuki or the one in Ward Center? There night be some Tsai-kos who’d like to join in even if they cannot make the 7 am practice.
I’m going to stay in Kailua for the Final Four games which start at 8 am. DrDoc has to be at work at 8 am so I’ll ask him to drop me off at the Kailua BCD around 7:30 to watch the Butler/WV face-off.

Na Wahine on their first WAC sb road trip. Nine games in 8 days in three states. Lucky they’re young, good time to bond and let the time pass by quickly. Starts with a DH against New Mexico State at Las Cruces at 5 pm. Too bad, no live stats, no reporters on the road.
Just got corrected by SigOth – the Final Four doesn’t start until 12 noon so I guess I’ll wend my way into town on my own. I wonder where I got the idea that the first game was at 8 am.

Beautiful morning at Ching field to watch the Warriors. Its a bit to early to say much about individual players, but there is great emotion on the field. I would say the defense is ahead of the offense at this point which is the same as last year. The defense is definitely more together as a group and emotionally fired up. The practice is much more organized with little wasted time. On the 11 on 11″s I would say the QB’s looked about equal. No one really stood out at QB at this point. Defense pretty much dominated the 11’s. I did notice that the Beast was in the offensive backfield on every play he was in. He is not going to have to many offensive linemen as friends.
That is when you, the actor, can take your method of assault.
