For the first time this season, a Wahine did not receive a weekly honor from the Big West. UCSB’s Lindsey Ruddins ties conference record for most POWs. Hawaii’s Hanna Hellvig was nominated for player of week and freshman of week. Brooke Van Sickle for defensive player of week

Hawaii moved up to No. 11 in today’s AVCA Top 25.

Sometimes it’s just where the votes fall. UH (10-1), which lost its first match of the season at then-No. 5 Baylor on Sunday, moved up from No. 13 in the previous poll.

>> Stanford (6-2) goes back to No. 1 with 28 first-place votes
>> Baylor (9-0) from 5 to 2, 27 first-place votes.
>> Nebraska (8-1) from 1 to 3, 6 votes
>> Pitt(11-1) from 6 to 4, 1 vote
>> BYU (9-2) from 12 to 9 with 2 votes

Didn’t expect UH to move up in the poll. I figured they would have just stayed the same.

  2. Cindy Luis September 23, 2019 9:18 am

    1. thought they’d drop but with the number of losses by teams above them it makes some sense. And maybe some coaches finally catching up with the earlier UH results.

Fantastic non-conference start to the season.
Thought it was a good showing in Waco.
    True grit rallying against Missouri.
    Competing hard against Baylor…
    Despite having to travel…
    Being without Jolie…
    Playing back to back…
    With a young team…

So much more to look forward to!!!
    Go Wahine!!!

P.S. Those that don’t see all the positives to this team are…well…lolo.

#3 Well said! What a great pre-season! Hoping for JR return but only if she is safely able to do so. Let’s go Bows – make it a great conference season and win back the Big West Championship!

  5. H-Man September 23, 2019 10:14 am

    Congrats to Wahine.

    3. Mahalo!!!
We are cheering for student athletes who always amaze me, tough season or not, because of the example they set by working so hard together to produce the best, positive team work possible. If only adults in positions of power would follow their lead…

#3 … I am with haka. Good positive outlook, especially when JR returns.

    7. Yep, Rasmussen on the court makes this a different team. And she’s only just a junior! Ah Mow has a lot of options in terms of what lineup she can use.

  9. H-Man September 23, 2019 11:19 am

Wahine with as many as three freshmen on the court at a time are doing way better than I could hope for. They just need to improve some on passing and setting to beat the top teams. IMHO.

Hoping Jolie travels to the mainland for this weeks games, if not, hope to see her back for the UCI home game

On another site, I saw UH’s projected final RPI rank at #9 with 4 total losses. Likely this will change, but there is a good possibility that UH will have the RPI and resume to host a subregional. If that projection holds, UH will have 2 victories over top 25 RPI teams, including one on a neutral court, and another against a 26-50 RPI team.

BW could also send two teams to the tourney. The current BW OOC winning percentage is .552. In 2013, when the BW sent 3 teams to the tourney (partly because of the trip-champion result), the reg. season OOC pct was .541. Last year, the reg. season OOC pct. was .536. UCSB is projected at #40 and Poly at #52. My odds are on UH and UCSB to be in the tourney.

From the previous post (closed) from Cindy:” Pitt loses to Penn State , the Panhers jumping over the Nittany Lions to No. 4 and Penn State drops a spot to 5.”

The full story is: Pittsburgh swept PSU at PSU on Friday (Sept 20). Then PSU eeked out a 3-2 W (28-26, 21-25, 25-21,20-25, 16-14) over the host Panthers on Sunday (Sept 22). From an objective POV, I see nothing surprising about Pittsburgh being voted a rank better than Penn State.

Let the BW conference/regular season begin! Go Bows!

Would be awesome to see “The Stan” sold out and making a loud ruckus during Na Wahine games! Maybe new cheers at certain times during the game? Like a cheer when the other team is blocked, perhaps? I don’t know. Just thinking off the top of my head here. I like the tradition of clapping and chanting at the men’s volleyball games when they’re serving. It’s like a build up of a hurricane or something to that affect.

Nice to see the Wahine move up despite the Baylor loss. Cant wait to see Baylor vs. Texas in Big 12 play. It’s pretty much certain Hawaii has a chance to slide into the top 10 as conference play goes along and if they take of business from here on out. I actually agree with Stanford at No. 1 again in the polls. Yes Baylor is still undefeated and has played a tough respectable schedule but Stanford played a suicidal preseason schedule themselves. I expect them to improve more as the season goes along. They’re still my pick to win the hardware this season

    3. Nice design on your comments, almost poetic, lol! There is sooo much to root for with everyone stepping up!
    12. You don’t think that prediction is too early since they haven’t played UCSB or Poly yet? Not being negative, just like to see how the Wahine will play with Jolie against them before sticking my toes into the water. By the way, thanks for the insight as usual, very thoughtful and provocative.
    15. I hope the men’s volleyball team would show up in force at the Wahine’s games. They start that Viking chant (Woo, Woo) with the overhead hand claps at the end of the set that really gives me chicken skin when the whole SSC does it!
    GO BOWS!!

  18. Kahuna September 24, 2019 4:29 am

The men do show up at the matches. Two things though. Many leave before the matches are over. The person who brought that “Viking” chant over to Hawaii was SVT and he is no longer here.

James Anastasiaades is also very active in getting the chant started, however he works the Stan Sheiff floor as some kind of “photographer” or something and is not appropriate for him to do stuff like that.

We need the band to start it. They are the large body of people needed so fans can clap along.

  19. roygbivs September 24, 2019 9:45 am

Every match is a new ‘quiz’ for this team.
They have to learn how to finish teams off, should have extended the match. Who’s know what would have happened…?

    Good Luck in conference play.
    Go’Bows!!!

    17. the men are there, leading the Viking clap
    18. Anastassiades interning with sports marketing. As is Angel Gaskin
    19. They have except for one match.
