Too many service and hitting errors. That long delayed flight sure hurt them as they did not have enough time to rest or practice well. Not sure that even Rasmussen could have helped had she been there.
It’s good that UH has multiple 5 set experiences this season already. They know how to come back and win. Hopefully they can keep the momentum going and crush Mizzous spirit going into the 5th
In the fourth set the Wahine woke up. Sounds like Robyn Ah Mow lit a fire under them. Hope that they won’t lose their lead.

Most impressive win of the season. Washington was higher ranked but this was on the road (although neutral site) and without a key player. I hope they don’t make a habit of that set/match point leading by ____ and then letting the opponent tie it up. Man that was nerve racking

My palms we’re sweating during those final moments in the 5th set, lol! Phew! Great win for the coaches, players, and program! I love how they battled after the first and thirds sets. They could have folded but these ladies were hungry and their determination showed. Wagoners block to open the fifth, Igiede and Hellvig’s block to end it! 15 total blocks for the match… Amazing! Continue to accomplish greatness Rainbow Wahines! Hawaii has your back!
Props to the coaches and players on the win; however, it was really preparation for the real test tomorrow. (After all, Hawaii was supposed to beat Missouri.) No moral victories, aim for the top.
Two best wins on UH’s resume so far are against Washington and Missouri. Both are against Top 20 opponents from Pac12 and SEC who have good projected RPIs (which gives UH bonus RPI points). From an eye-test perspective, beating a top 20 team on a neutral court is more impressive.
Statistically, UH played ugly. Missouri scored 4 more points, outhit UH, had 4 more net kills (kills minus hitting errors), and more digs. UH had more aces and service errors, but really shined in the blocking department. Basically two evenly matched teams as reflected in their AVCA rankings. UH played significantly better at the end of the match than at the beginning. This was a match in which the OHs all had poor stats except for Ross, while Williams (!!) and Igiede led the way for the middles. I am not surprised by UH’s set-to-set inconsistent play. They don’t have Rasmussen and they are starting 3 true freshmen. It is really good to win when you are not at full strength and not playing your best against an equally-strong opponent.
UH has to play like it did against Washington if it hopes to upset Baylor.
On a side note, BYU leads Stanford 2-1, and ahead early in the 4th…another upset in the making?

Cindy, can you inquire as to whether the 2020 recruits attended today’s or will attend tomorrow’s match? Both are within a 2 hour drive of Waco. I hope Nikki Thomas makes the trip also. Great recruit who persevered despite the injuries she had. I remember she attended UH’s sweep of Texas A&M in the 2015 tournament.
As Wells said, rpi win on neutral site. Another awesome 5 set match. Baylor is an awesome team, maybe even deserves a number 1 or 2 ranking?

26. RPI doesn’t care about match location, much less the AVCA ranking of opponents. However, the tournament committee does consider location of wins and significant wins against top opponents when it comes to filling the bracket and seeding teams, plus out-of-conference record.
The adjusted RPI does care that UH beat a high RPI ranked team like Missouri, however (bonus points). So keep rooting for Missouri so they maintain a top 25 or top 50 RPI ranking on Selection Sunday.

Missed the fifth set due to a prior commitment so I was spared the nerve racking ending. Glad that the Wahines were able to pull it off somehow.
As for Cal Poly, the update is that the Mustangs beat the Beavers in four sets. Next Tuesday they’ll play Long Beach on the road, their first true conference test and probably without Torrey van Winden. Either team could possibly win that one.
Congrats 2 the Na Wahine — a W is a W, and a roadkill over a ranked opponent to keep the undefeated streak going is buzzworthy!
As for Memphis (11-1), their undefeated season came to an end today. What Cindy did not mention is that, in the preseason AA coaches’ poll, Memphis was chosen to come in DEAD LAST in the 12-team AA!
Aside: As for the 9-team Big West, in our conference’s preseason coaches’ poll, Cal State Fullerton was picked to finish dead last just below UC Riverside. CS Fullerton is 8-3 (counting today’s W over Penn) while UC Riverside is 4-6 (not counting today’s game gainst Seattle). Not that bad for what was expected to be our conference’s bottom-feeders.

Missouri played a very competitive match against Baylor. But Yossiana’s sharp angle attacks, evading blockers earned many points for Baylor. Wahine needs a good strategy to slow down Yossiana, and to dig her attacks (probably, by Riley). This is a golden opportunity to reach top eight and to make up for last year, 5-game loss to Baylor. Please, bring wahine’s A+ game (that played against WA) tomorrow and give another good challenge with team effort to stay unbeaten against Baylor!

25. Maverick, thanks for mentioning Nickie Thomas. Came in as a raw player who redshirted, penciled in to start for two years but was injured, and finally earning all-conference honors her fifth year.
What a nail biter that was. Cindy, props to your son, Tiff. The way he calls the game and hearing his voice raise on a pending hit or defensive move by na Wahine gets me sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for him to say “Score” or “Blocked”!!! It is amazing to me how he can speak so fast in such detail and I can understand every word he says. It truly takes talent to do what he does without skipping so much as a beat!! Great job Tiff Wells! Hang in there against Baylor! GO BOWS!!!
