Kahuku lineman Micah Soliai Howlett commits to Hawaii football

What was supposed to be an uneventful Monday turned into a day of good news for the Rainbow Warriors. Right wideout JoJo Ward was named the league’s Player of the Week in the morning, and then then Micah Soliai Howlett a highly regarded offensive lineman from Kahuku High, commits to UH. And, of course, the Warriors’ victory over Oregon State on Saturday ensured that all UH student-athletes could order omelets as part of the training-table meal.

Here’s the skinny on the Soliai Howlett addition:

> Soliai Howlett said he is 6 feet 4 and 295 pounds. He was named to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s 2018 All-State third team.

> He initially made an oral commitment to Arizona State in June. But he began having second thoughts, and last week he started leaning toward UH. He said he watched the Spectrum Sports telecast of the UH-Oregon State, from kickoff to that post-game scuffle. “I thought the game was good,” he said. “And once the game ended, I saw the UFC match on the sideline.”

> Soliai Howlett received offers from Nevada, Fresno State, Syracuse and Liberty.

> His cousins are former Warriors Kamalani Alo and Kaeo Alo.

> He attended a UH spring practice in April, participated in the Rainbow Warrior Football Elite Camp in June, and watched one of the training-camp practices open to the public in August.

> Quote: “I want to be part of something special. I want to be one of the local boys who defends Pride Rock.”

> He said he will put his commitment into writing on Dec. 18, the first day of the early-signing period for football prospects.

> Earlier, UH received 2020 commitments from Mililani High offensive lineman Jake Tuatagaloa, Kamehameha-Kapalama linebacker Ezra Evaimalo, Hilo wideout Kilohana Haassenritter, Liberty Hill punter Matthew Shipley, and Campbell receiver Tamatoa Mokiao-Atimalala.

    Congrats on a wise choice!

Huge pickup. Big mahalo to Micah for staying home to protect pride rock. Future 4 year starter on the line.

  3. BigIslandLava September 10, 2019 7:58 am

Another Soljah Warrior. Welcome and look forward to seeing your future contribution on the field. The current is starting to move towards Pride Rock’s advantage. Contributing Mainland players mixed with some our top local players makes for eye opening and entertaining football. So proud.

Kudos to coaches Jason Cvercko and Mark Weber. Ecstatic Micah Soliai Howlett chose the Warriors.

  7. H-Man September 10, 2019 9:24 am

Iyf, thanks for the link. I wonder what school he will end up with?

    Howzit Everybody,

Another great win on the field and another great recruiting win off the field.

As BigIslandLava said, you can just feel the positive vibes flowing from lower campus right now. Not only with the football team but with Volleyball also.

Things are really looking up. Thank you Coach Rolo and the warriors along with Coach Robin and the wahine for letting us join the ride.

  9. boolakanaka September 10, 2019 9:57 am

Not surprised about Moussa, more than a few folks said he had the best arm of everyone…then again Jeff George had a beautiful arm, was a head case..

  10. Stephen Tsai September 10, 2019 10:34 am

Soliai Howlett probably can play both guard and tackle. But I do like the idea of recruiting a guard. It’s an underrated position, but very important. Teams need to control the interior, as well as have a guy powerful enough on pulls. Nice, smart pickup.

Things are looking up. With the local boys and mainland Warriors….things are looking up.

#14 – we only want Stovall to return 1 kickoff a game. He can return plenty punts, that’s ok.

  17. H-Man September 10, 2019 2:54 pm

Even with the current QBs, Uahinui has the best arm. Still waiting to see him in game action.

    38 – 30 … hilorain
    52 – 21 … wafan
    55 – 49 … Ipu Man
    56 – 13 … Kekoa
    56 – 14 … Akamai Okole/d1shima

Here are the ground rules for determining the blog prestigious prognosticator:

    1) Duplicate predictions allowed (since there is NO prize)
    2) OK to favor the opponent… but we hope you wrong 🙁
    2) Predictions posted by 10:00 am on game day.
    3) Closest score to the actual wins (absolute value total of over and under difference to both scores). In case of tie, closest to UH score wins.

A big welcome Micah; defend Pride Rock!

Not too late for UW and Reno tix–I can email them to you.

Come join our Road Warrior group at games at UW, Reno and UNLV; and sit with other UH fans and families of our current players at the 50 yard line right behind our beloved Warriors; with the families of Cole McDonald, Justin Uahinui, Jason Matthew-Sharsh, Kanai Picanco, Derek Thomas, Ben Scruton, etc. However, our group at UW is in the upper deck across our team bench due to the lack of availability of seats for our group size.

Our group is 450+ at UW and 500+ at UNLV; and come join our tailgates and meet your fellow diehard fans!

I’m not rooting for this outcome. I’m not a hater. I love this program. I hope I’m wrong, too. If Hawaii pulls off the upset, you can start talking about the Group of Five.

    Washington 27
    Hawaii 17

    It’s in high altitude, right?

  21. H-Man September 10, 2019 4:37 pm

    Hawaii 38 Washington 31

Micah, you make my day, wanting to be a Warrior! Micah’s decision and others who are coming, validate how special a program Rolo and the staff are creating. It’s much more than X’s and O’s. It taps into what makes our Rock in the Pacific special to us. We are fortunate to living in these special times.

WTG, Mr. Soliai Howlett. Welcome Warrior!

    Mahalo SteveM.

Aloha to the Numata Ohana. Just saw the story on HNN…

    🙁

  25. haka September 10, 2019 8:43 pm

High altitude? The landing of Warrior Pirates, Hawaiian colors flying, is done at sea level as far as I know.

  26. UH4eva September 10, 2019 9:12 pm

    UH 33
    UW 30

    Go Warriors

  27. cappie the dog September 10, 2019 9:47 pm

I feel like a jerk. I would like to change my prediction.

    Hawaii 24
    Washington 23

    GOTTA BELIEVE!!!

  28. Boolakanaka September 11, 2019 3:24 am

Altitude is negligible, Seattle is just a couple hundred feet above sea level.

Any Tsakios like one free round, I’ll be at the Sheraton Downtown.

  29. iGrokSpock September 11, 2019 9:31 am

Not even couple hundred feet above sea level. That stadium is right on the waters of Lake Washington.

    Per Wikipedia:
Surface elevation 16 ft (4.9 m) above mean sea level, 20.6 ft (6.3 m) above Puget Sound mean lower low tide

  30. burro sabio September 11, 2019 10:55 am

No word on Eletise. Maybe he becomes eligible next week, conveniently after the Pac-12 games are done.

  31. NorthShoreFan September 11, 2019 11:00 am

Maybe the Warriors should “land” using the War Canoe!

  32. boolakanaka September 11, 2019 12:33 pm

The average elevation of Seattle is generally calculated to be around 170 feet (52 m).

  33. SteveM September 11, 2019 12:54 pm

BTW, I still maintain a Tsai-ko web page with some of the latest UH football announcements I glean from the blog and Facebook at: http://stevem.altervista.org

  34. Manoa Mist September 11, 2019 3:36 pm

UH is looking good man win or lose against Washington. Look at how far we’ve come since the Chow Chow Chow days. They better take out that checkbook and pay Rolo what he deserves.

This would be a good time to apologize for all the times I brought up the flex-bone as being the key to a winning football program. In my defense, though, no, never mind my defense. I apologize.
