Bill Amis is today's guest
Basketball player Bill Amis is today’s guest on the Warrior Beat Show, which will begin at about noon today.
Questions may be posed on this blog or the show’s Cover It Live section.
* * * * *
Jackson Wheeler has had a lifetime of heartbreak.
Because of family circumstances, as a prep student, Wheeler lived in his high school gym for several months. His first wife was killed in a traffic accident. She was pregnant at the time. His brother died young, leaving behind a large family.
But you would never know about such obstacles. He always appears to be upbeat, even when he isn’t.
For 20 years as the UH basketball team’s primary recruiter, Wheeler brought in some of the program’s best — Trevor Ruffin, Tes Whitlock, Anthony Carter, Michael Kuebler, Fabio Ribeiro, Tony Maroney, Phil Handy, Nerius Puida, Predrag Savovic, Eric Ambrozich, Micah Kroeger, and so forth.
Coaches from other programs often seek Wheeler’s advice on how to instruct their own recruits to do the things necessary to become eligible.
He was good at his job, because his job involved people. The people test, as proposed by the Wizard of Oz, is: A heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.
And people like Wheeler. Every day his UH office was filled with people just wanting to hang out.
Former players and coaches — and their families — keep in contact.
Riley Wallace’s grandson is named Jackson.
He even passed the most important people test: Oprah likes him. (Oprah’s boyfriend was the best man at Wheeler’s wedding.)
Wheeler will not be retained on the new basketball staff. That’s a shame — for UH, because Wheeler was good for the athletic department and the school.
But he’ll be OK. He has a great and beautiful wife. He has a lot of friends. And he’s a survivor.
first
Thanks Coach Wheeler. Your smile will be missed.
thank you Jackson.
Good Morning Tsaikos!!
I think that the athletic compliance office could use Jackson Wheeler’s services.
Bill,
Always loved your energy and spirit. It was tough to watch you sit on the bench last year. Here’s to a renewed 2010 season!
-chawan (orange jacket guy)
good luck to coach jackson,
best of the best to you, mahalo for your years of hard work!!! all the way back to the jarrin akana and AC Carter memories, whew.
Good Luck Coach Wheeler. Mahalo!
Good morning Tsai-kos!
Top 10!
Best wishes to Jackson Wheeler in his future endeavors.
Good Luck Coach Wheeler. Mahalo!

Good morning Tsaikos…
Good Luck Coach Wheeler….Godspeed…and thanks for all the years of service….
Jackson had a big impact on a lot of people.
Last week, I received e-mails from Trevor Ruffin and his father, Levi, asking about Jackson.
Questions for Bill Amis.
What’s your impression of Coach Gib so far?
and
Are you excited to play a different offensive style?
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Mornin’ Mr. Tsai.
Is there any chance Jackson can continue working in the UH system?
Thanks for everything, Jackson!
DPK:
Not sure. There is somewhat of a hiring freeze.
I’ve known Jackson for 20 years, and what I like is how persistent he is. His work doesn’t end after signing day. He’s always on the recruits to keep working hard.
Someone once told me the biggest concern about a recruit is from signing date to the end of the academic year.
I think of all of the staff, he was the one worth keeping. Nothing against the others, but he appeared to be a good recruiter and with guidance from who is supposed to be a top recruiter, he may have been better.
Oh well, we’re fans. Got to support.
I don’t mean to just single out Jackson.
I still feel really bad for Bob Nash.
Maybe Jackson could come back as the Director of Basketball Operations, although I know that job pays peanuts. Does the DoBO pay the same at all institutions?
ST, Rigot recruited Savo.
Also, last year around this time I recall Jackson Wheeler at a Men’s Volleyball game hosting a friend. In probably the most critical time, he wasn’t even on the road, he was hanging out at the VBall game with a friend.
I’m sorry to say, but because of that memory last season I am glad he was let go.
No doubt Gib Arnold is a good recruiter.
But it should be interesting to see the innovative way he can navigate around a recruiting budget that will be much less than the one he had at USC.
I think director of basketball operations would earn about $40,000
Last night’s Bowsball game turned out to be not very enjoyable. Started off by having to put up (briefly) with this very obnoxious guy with an extremely loud voice making really nasty comments towards the Air Foce team. Shortly after we’d moved to another part of The Les a couple of rows below a number of Tsai-kos, Stadium staff either ejected him or shut him down.
I know that some fans think that anything goes when harassing the other team, but this guy really went beyond acceptable.
Actually, we lost interest in the game and left going into the bottom of the 7th. For me, great baseball is a 1-0 win, not a blowout.
Best of Luck Coach Jackson. What’s next? Coach Gib – are you going to attend The Final Four as well?
Picked my Elite Eight – not my emotional favorites, but The Probables.
Finally, I forgot to let folks here know that last Wednesday the City Council passed the University of Hawai`i Plan Review Use Permit. In doing so, the Floor Draft amendment stripped the language requiring that the Manoa Campus adminiinstration offer the City the Right of First Refusal for any “commercial” use of the Stan Sheriff Center.even if the proceeds would go to a UH program.
Instead, here is the final language: In the event that the performance floor and seating area of the Stan Sheriff Arena is proposed to be used for activities of a commercial nature held by or sponsored by the University of Hawaii or a University affiliated organization, UHM shall first obtain prior approval from DPP (Department of Planning and Permitting) to ensure that any anticipated impacts on the community as a result of the event shall be identified and properly mitigated. Such impacts may include, but are not limited to, traffic, noise, frequency of events, and parking.
See – sometimes intervention does work.
Off to work –
Aloha Kakahiaka!
God Bless our former coaches who are not being retained.
ST- Why is your name NOT on the Warrior Beat streamer on the front page?
Hi Ho Willie Grace
Mahalo to Coach Wheeler for the 20+ years of his life he gave to UH basketball.
Good fortune keeps finding those that deserve it!
Bill,
What is the perceived attitude of UH basketball with the campus community right now?
Chawan aka “LOUD GUY”.
Bill,
Is there any indication right now as to what the offensive philosophies of Coach Gib Arnold may be for this team?
Good morning!
Really too bad about Jackson Wheeler. Good luck to you in your next endeavor.
aloha and mahalo jackson.
it appears that eran ganot may be retained.
bill amis
i am glad that you are on the road to recovery, right now are you at 100% or is there a ways to go still?
what more do you need to do to feel totally confident physically?
bill amis
this is a two fold question that are related…
you and your buddy hiram are two of the lone returnees that have been around the program for several years, it is going to be an interesting transition for the team and hopefully we get a few good men who can come in by the summer to at least acclimate.
my question is, should recruits be brought in for a visit and you are paired with some of these prospects, what positives can you mention that will help sway these young men and parents?
at that point also what can you say about the new coach?
thank you.
Coach Wheeler, thank you for all of your contributions to the UH basketball program and best wishes in any future endeavor.
WassupDoc:
thank you for your tireless efforts in your quest to help many “non-profits” in their effort to meet their goals be it members, donations, etc.
and, thanks for all your efforts to assist the UHAD in making it a better unit within the UH-Manoa family – A-House family thanks you!!!
Re-I’m glad that Coach Wheeler wasn’t retained
There’s no nice way in saying this, but the new coaching staff has to rid itself of the old ways of doing things, like recruiting and coaching.
I heard Al Davis on Artie’s show once saying that the coaching staff, referring to the Coach Nash regime, takes the same approach to recruiting every year. Which basically means they take the same beaten path in their approach to recruiting, mainly the JC’s and other areas. And it doesn’t allow them to be up to par competitively with the rest of the WAC.
Furthermore, Artie questioned why Idaho of all places and schools can attract the inner city kids from LA and Portland and UH can’t.
Maybe this reverts back to recruiting. And maybe it reverts back to Coach Wheeler. But the facts are what they are. Call it what you want. Coach Wheeler not being retained in part because of collateral damage and the fact that the Coach Nash regime, in which he was a part of, was sullied by incompetence and losses.
So from my perspective I’m glad Coach Wheeler gone. Maybe others are silently thinking the same thing. But in the big picture Coach Arnold has to do what’s right for his program. He has to put the pieces of the puzzle together so that he turns up a winner. Coach Wheeler’s past, while great to some of his fans and colleagues, is not in the eyes of the new coach of which I think is a good thing.
NFL changes rules for overtime – playoff games only.
ORLANDO, Fla. — The NFL has changed its overtime rules for playoff games.
Starting next season, if a team wins the coin toss and then kicks a field goal, the other team gets the ball.
If the game is still tied after that, play will continue under the current sudden-death rules. Should the team winning the toss immediately score a touchdown, then the game is over.
Team owners voted 28-4 on Tuesday in favor of the proposal at the NFL meetings.
The new rule applies only for postseason games.
HA post.
That really sucks for Coach Wheeler. I hope you have a good and succesful life after UH.
ST, did you say that Tony Maroney was one of the best? I remember a guy that was tall, but couldn’t catch or rebound and couldn’t do anything but dunk the ball. I did enjoy seeing him around campus with his really petite girlfriend.
Coach Jackson Wheeler –
Much mahalo for your hard work and many years of service to our University. Your efforts were apprectiated, and tour efforts will be missed.
God speed.
POMAI,
CHECK YOUR “TSAIKOS” EMAIL ACCOUNT.
I too was subject to the baseball game last night, great game for UH but the loud guy was really overbearing. Even to the point of hollering at our players while they were at the plate, that’s where I draw the line. They need some concentration out there. But the lady who went for stadium personnel was also “overbearing” in my opinion.
This is, today, still a free country, albeit not as much as last week.
As a religious person I still did not know the meaning, or origin of Godspeed. Here it is: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Godspeed
Godspeed coach Wheeler!

I was thinking the same thing while reading the post, but the problem with that is it makes sense……. LOL
Wayne Hunter signed a $1.2 million, 1-year contract with the Jets today.
Stretch & Pomai:
Good idea of Jackson Wheeler in the “compliance office” – is there a position open? is there a hiring freeze? is he qualified for the position?

Now, this is weird as the above post is already on the blog #45, but still appears in my “space” to place forth more “garbage” – ST, what the heck is going on with the blog? Is this a signal for things to come? “pop-up” ads take up the entire page and I cannot get rid of them!!
well, here goes as I will submit this entire page again!
ahouse…word on the street is that the asst coach/personnel dir will happen as planned. however, was kept on the back burner due to these important basketball announcements. wait til furlough week is pau then stuff will roll out.
kazz,
i am just one of many loud people that might frequent this page…. i do not want to take credit for it.
A-House,
UH has a strict hiring freeze right now. When Amanda moved up from the #2 compliance person to the #1 compliance person, they never hired anyone to replace her as #2. In fact, they got rid of the student assistant also, so basically Amanda has to do the jobs that 3 people used to do.

Hot & Spicy Bubbling Tofu Soup – Korean style – any recommendations where we can get some?
Sorry to see Coach Wheeler let go.
Other than Coach Farmer being Marv Vitatoe’s roommate at UCLA, and his stint as coach at UCLA and COI, what was his function at UH – not throwing rocks but really curious.
[…] The Warrior Beat| UH football, University of Hawaii athletics … […]
A House call Gigi
A “strict” hiring freeze is a myth. All it would take is for Jim to ask for an exception and it would be granted. And there are no limitations on hiring student assistants.
The reality is he has to make some hard choices as to where he wants to cut costs, and, good or bad, right or wrong, this is the choice he must have thought was best.
Oh lord….
While the Wahine softball team can be seen on K5 all weekend, Chris Hart will be doing play by play on ESPN 1420.

#51 – A House- Sorabol. No can go wrong.
BigHilo is probably in Kau checking out BIK and his Kau Pidgin. BigHilo thought he had the King’s pidgin – Hawaiian Creole, along comes BIK telling everyone that Kau has its own Hawaiian Kine Original pidgin.
watching the Wahine NCAA bb tournament, lots of screens, drives, opening space for drives and passes, lots of basic stuff if UH did we could have been more competitive. I would have been happy if the UH team played as fast as these women do, exciting games.
A-House,
Liz is right: Sorabol. Dubu Jigae is one of my go-to-meals at Sorabol.
Kazz,
I just had to turn up the sound (way up) when the interview started playing.
Regarding # 52
In hindsight hiring Farmer was a big mistake. He did not recruit one player while he was here. If you don’t recruit then you have no business coaching college ball. Arnold fit the bill as someone who is familiar with current recruits, willing to accept a smaller salary, coached on the west coast and was an active coach and not selling barbecue equipment in Nevada for the last nine years.
Regarding # 35
Al Davis and Artie Wilson were great basketball players for us but are not in the college basketball coaching business. Nash at first was bringing in those kids on the recommendation from past players who wanted to help him, but soon found out most of the recruits were just coming for the trip and those who committed weren’t very good. It was Nash’s choice to listen to his friends and while it helped cost him his job he was the head and he has to live with his decision. Point though is Al and Artie can talk all they want, they in fact have no clue how to make this a successful program.
Article about Miami’s WR situation mentions both Bess and RGM.
The Pac-10 may be able to have a conference championship game even if they do not expand!
The Pac-10 has been having trouble finding schools that would increase the revenue they earn per school…so, they are looking at getting the millions from a championship game without expanding.
There are assistant women’s volleyball and basketball coaching positions open at NAU.
Hi!
Are you thinking of applying or recommending someone, Slugger?
ahouse….choi’s garden on rycroft street just off of sheridan st. near the old lunch house.
good food over there.
#72 everytime she speaks of her former employer i think of pig guts.
I haven’t been to Sorabol in years, but its reputation precedes itself. And I second al’s recommendation of Choi’s Garden on Rycroft, I went there on his recommendation and they have good stuff. And this is coming from a Korean, mind you, I’m pretty picky cause I can always get the homemade stuff. 🙂
BTW, it’s called sundubu jjigae (or just sundubu), 순두부찌개. Dubu is Korean for tofu; sundubu is soft tofu. Jjigae is a Korean version of stew. And the stew bubbles because it is usually served in a stone pot (dolsot, 돌솥) that is piping hot.
Man, I’m getting hungry.

I can truly appreciate the many beautiful hearts on this blog…including the blog host. I can feel your guys’ concern for Wheeler and surely appreciate your good-hearted suggestions about he being retained in the dept. There are good folks on this blog for sure.
But folks, eventually gotta let go and Support Coach Gibb and his new program. It may not resemble anything close to what you have been used to for the past 20 years. Gotta move on..Sooner better than later, but that’s just my opinion. Everybody cope in their own time.

I like Gib Arnold. I think he will do a great job @ UH. He’s hip, he seems genuine and will continue to be a magnet to top talent – but i don’t trust him, someone please keep a eye on that guy!
al,
That’s na’au!
There was actually a young man from Hawaii who’s last name was Na’u who went to NAU. During the freshman orientation, all they gave him was a hat.
ok, so if JW was instrumental for bringing in all that talent mentioned above, I wanna know who in the world was responsible for bringing in Rogue Harris?
was it a 2 for 1 Crosetti Speight – Rogue Harris deal?? what? even as a kid never really understood that deal..
Actually, al mentioning Choi’s yakiniku (which is REALLY good, they have nice quality meat) and banchan (side dishes) reminded me that I actually did try some of their jjigaes, and they didn’t impress me too much. Then again, my Mom’s jjigaes are really good, and the soups had cooled down by the time we ate them. (I think they give you a free bowl of jjigae if you order enough from their yakiniku menu, and so we were eating the meats instead of the soups. Or something like that, it’s been a while since that party.)
That really is a shame about Word of Life. That is really tough for those kids – not to mention the teachers and the rest of the staff.
next cc at Choi’s, or is it too pricey?
I would like to thank you for the efforts you have made in writing this article. I am hoping the same best work from you in the future as well. In fact your creative writing abilities has inspired me to start my own BlogEngine blog now. Really the blogging is spreading its wings rapidly. Your write up is a fine example of it.
Don’t I owe you a meal, Ralph? Can’t remember if it’s lunch or dinner, but my treat.
Can WOLA get charter school funding from the state, or separation of Church and State issue?
Ralph – DOE has a moratorium on new charter schools. I believe Laupahoehoe High was trying to get charter status but was turned down
I’m all for a cc (I don’t mean chawan_cut) at Choi’s. Walking distance from work is always a good thing. 😀
Sorry to hear about WOLA!
Joe Onosai is too talented to sit on the side for long. Maybe UH has a place for him.
Hang in there Brother Joe! Our prayers go out to you and of the excellent WOLA ‘ohana.

Jason McDonald’s is fine with me. You can’t enter a horse race with a mule, the speed of the game was just too much for UH flex offense and transitioning defense. Watch any NCAA game in March Madness, men or women, the game is played quicker even in the half court offense, and team defense is a lot more physical than UH’s and there is someone on the shooter nearly all the time, something UH’s zone lacked.

I’ve had the sundubu jjigae at Choi’s and I think that Sorabol’s is a little better. The banchan items differ between the two restaurants, but about even.

I haven’t been able to watch Coach Gib’s interview on the Warrior Beat show. The replay ‘mechanism’ isn’t working. Click the MENU button and nada.
ST ~ Can we have the techs look at the problem, please?
I have no opinion on Coach Gib until I can hear him via the WB interview. Thanks.
what girl, you referring to your daughter as “the girl” and wifey as “da boss”.
Slugger, coach Arnold is a good communicator, you’ll be please with his presence, compared to coach Mac, he could be Mr. Dale Carnegie himself. But can he coach as the head man, time will tell, in about 3 years, maybe sooner. He gets to give out 5 scholarships this recruiting round, and at least 5 next year. The ten scholarships should define his program, quality young players can compete in the WAC, especially if he recruits a few JUCO and the players currently on roster contributes next two years.
St John’s offered Donovan out of Florida 3M to coach basketball, he turned them down, he makes 3.5 M per season already for the gators. So what are we paying Gib Arnold?
Donovan probably pays more in taxes than what we offered Arnold.
ralph,
Arnold is making the same salary as Nash was, $240,000; it was in an article.
We’ll need better conditioning if Gib is going to have more uptempo plays. Who handles conditioning for the basketball team? More running?
NAU was offering $24,000-$25,000 for an assistant women’s basketball coach. I wonder what our assistants are making?
yes ralph.
isn’t 25K at the poverty level for a family in Hawaii, a family of 4 I think.
Coach Gib is Mr Energy. He is wasting no time and is already seeking recruits.

Ganot has been a bb assistant only for 3 years, all at UH, after Nash promoted him from his Dir. of Operations duties. He did a lot of admin stuff at St. Mary’s and at UH, including some recruiting. At UH he was responsible for the guards, and I think our guard play stunk. I know he can’t dribble or shoot for them but their use of spacing, passing lanes, movement without the ball, etc. were lacking, and that’s coaching.
It is slooooowwwww tonight.
I gotta go… night y’all!
USF stopped basketball for a few years, can’t remember if it was voluntary or NCAA mandated, so the players could transfer and play right away. I recall that there was incidents involving Quintin Dailey. That was during Larry Little days, so Riley was here.
Enjoy a great Hump Day everyone!
Godspeed to Wheeler. Hope it turns out to be UH where you find your next success!

Idaho never had
I don’t know what happened to my post–I was trying to write:
Idaho never had a non-Saturday regular-season game before, but they have 2 nationally televised non-Saturday games this season. They also have 3 straight road games on their schedule, with the 3rd of those road games being a WAC game.

I don’t think that your comment is asking that an entirely new blog be created as a result of Stephen posting that Bill Amis was the guest on the WB show. (but I have been wrong before)
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Wassup Doc?
Being a closet UH fan, I wish the program the best of luck. I hope Coach Arnold hires some good recruiters, that will be key in being competitive in the WAC. He should hire J. Cyriac, who was the real recruiter at CSI (College of Southern Idaho). Cyriac was the best recruiter in JC basketball during his time at CSI. He was first on staff with Derrick Zeck and then stayed on to help Coach Arnold. I heard Cyriac got his college degree recently, so some lucky division one school will be picking him up. Cyriac was the main recruiter at CSI, not Zeck or Arnold. Too bad about Coach Wheeler, who is known as a very nice man and a real operator as a recruiter. Remember the pipeline he had to Saddleback College??? Too bad, they just won the California state JC championship and they have a good 6’10 big man that people are recruiting. Wheeler’s connection was his close friendship with Saddleback Coach Brummell, who has long since retired. I heard his Brummell’s son was on scholarship as a manager at UH. I’d hope that Arnold would keep Wheeler on as DOB, but it would only work if the coaches could keep their egos in check. And if things turn south, I’m sure that Coach Arnold doesn’t want his possible successor on his own staff. I never really understood why UH hired Nash and UH’s hiring of Coach Arnold is also surprising. Hopefully, it works out.
On another thread, someone mentioned Leonard Washington, who was asked to leave the program at USC by Kevin O’Neill. Trust me, you don’t want that maniac on the Islands. Bad person with a severe anger management problem. Floyd (as he is known to do at pretty much every campus he’s been to) sold his skimpy soul, to get SC winning. Especially when he took this bad apple. Guy started a major oncourt brawl in high school at the Reebok tournament in Las Vegas one July (I think it was the semi-finals, he suckerpunched someone) Floyd: Bad person, who was cheating all over the place. Buying players left and right. L. Washington is a major punk, who will cheapshot his own teammates. He’s really a bad kid, who has very little respect for people and causes trouble wherever he goes. He was the one who sucker-punched Blake Griffin’s Macadamia nutz. Trust me, UH doesn’t want Washington. He’d be a customer of Da Kine Bail Bonds within a month on Oahu.
