As announced this morning, Hawaii junior hitter Jolie Rasmussen was named the AVCA Division I player of the week.

This is the ninth time Hawaii has picked up Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week honors. The last one to do it was Nikki Taylor on November 22, 2016.

Rasmussen is the first national player of the week winner this season.

Per the AVCA:
Rasmussen played a strong all-around game to help the Rainbow Wahine to a 3-0 start to the season with a pair of ranked wins…Led her team in total kills in all three matches with 57…Carried Hawaii in the upset over San Diego with 19 kills, hit .390, four digs, and a pair of blocks…Stepped up her play in their second upset over Washington with another 19-kill performance, this time hitting an astounding .432…Recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 digs.

UPDATE: Here’s video interview clips from Tuesday afternoon with Rasmussen, coach Robyn Ah Mow and middle Skyler Williams.

Congratulations to Jolie Rasmussen. I first checked the AVCA website with the full expectation that she’d win the player of the week award and she was rightfully awarded. Nice that her parents were in the Staff Sheriff Center to see her play. She must have made them proud!

AVCA needs to get some stats correct…
SP (Sets played?): 14, not 12
    d. St. John’s 3-2, not 3-1
    d. Washington 3-1, not 3-2.

  3. Cindy Luis September 3, 2019 12:01 pm

    2. agree. I let UH’s SID know.

  4. islandman September 3, 2019 1:47 pm

In a previous day post ‘mauna’ brought up errors in the stats.
    I also posted this :
    – For example, in the UH website Box Score for the St John’s game, Skyler does not appear in the “Individual” listing of players.
In the Cumulative Season Stats, she is listed as playing in 2 sets, but she played in 10 sets.
However, her number of Kills and Blocks look okay.
This throws off the Stats like Kills and Blocks per Set.
    ——————————————————————————
Igiede is listed as playing in 7 sets but she played in 11.
Jolie is listed as playing 12 but she played in 14.
This throws off stats like Kills and Blocks per Set.
    ———————————————————————————-
Also, for the San Diego match, Turner is not listed in the Individual stats even though she had
9 kills. So the SD website stats don’t have those stats too.

Congrats to Jolie. Congrats to the team to start the season 3-0. Congrats to the coaching staff that pulled this team together. Great job.

  6. islandman September 3, 2019 2:22 pm

In the UH website Cumulative stats, Skyler is listed as playing in 2 sets, but she played in 10. Cpnsequently, her Blocks per Set came out to 6.5 but it should be 1.3.
Tiffany is listed at 6 sets played, but she played in 7, and so forth.

    4. et al
yes, as have mentioned. the stats are a mess.
it’s the new program. they are looking at dropping it to go back to the old one. BUT this program will be mandated by the NCAA to use next year.

    Congratulations to Jolie!

Cal Poly went 0-3 to open the season, but I didn’t see Torrey Van Winden’s name in the box score. I assume she’s injured. Any word on her status?

  10. Big Island Volleyball Fan September 3, 2019 5:17 pm

    9. From the Cal Poly website, I learned that Torrey van Winden is still injured ever since last December’s practice. She hasn’t been medically cleared to play since then and she may not even be able to play this year no matter how much she wishes to play. I talked with her personally this last spring, but for privacy reasons won’t reveal her injury. All I can say is that it’s serious.

One more comment on an unrelated topic. Regretfully we won’t be able to watch Big West Conference volleyball (or other sports) matches on the road for free as in previous years since they tacked on a subscription fee of $10 a month except for a few non-exciting matches like UCD vs. Sacramento right now. Since I don’t know the quality of the broadcast in advance, I won’t pay. If anyone is willing to pay, please let us know about the quality of the matches. Would be much appreciated. Here is the subscription link:

#10..I don’t think it’s a secret that Torrey has concussion issues. It was mentioned that she had multiple concussions so yes….it is serious and hope she recovers from it,

She is still a young lady and hope it doesn’t linger on for long.

Kudos to JR as well as the team!

On another note: Any information on Army? (Thursday night’s opponent) I think the older Ogilvie (Anna?) plays for them.

  14. Kahuna September 3, 2019 6:43 pm

Awesome award for Jolie. She have been thru so much injuries that she never had a a real chance to show her stuff. Now in one weekend , she picked up Tournament MVP, BW POW and National POW.

Super glad she accomplished these award as a Wahine. She is a perfect example of “Live Aloha Play Warrior”.

    Rolo would be proud.

    11. Big Island VB Fan: Someone pointed out that is an old link.

  16. H-Man September 3, 2019 7:46 pm

BIVF, thank you for the update. Hope Torrey heals 100% soon. Players like her make the conference exciting; makes the sport exciting.

  17. mauna September 3, 2019 7:57 pm

Cindy, did either/or Akana, Ross get cleared to practice today? Mahalo.

  18. Hot September 3, 2019 8:55 pm

Gotta love that Rasmussen credited Okino and Hanawahine.

  19. darkfire35 September 3, 2019 9:05 pm

Cindy, great newspaper article today. One part of your article, you mentioned the AVCA tacking on a link to the UH Athletics site in a tweet “ICYMI”. I don’t tweet so in my lack of tweeting acronyms, I’m guessing it stands for “In Case You Missed It”?
Well deserved Congratulations to Jolie on her honors! She is such a humble team player. Her interview shows how she will always put the team first and be supportive of everyone’s effort to get the win and not be a “superstar” and show it off.
I do hope Akana/and or Ross will be able to play this week! It would be nice to see their gamesmanship as well. GO BOWS!!!

Just wanted to say to coach, r-e-e-e-lax, 😊 😊 little bit of stress ok, too much, not so much.
Great start to season, Jolie humble n credits team, team awesomely talented with depth at every position.
Cant wait for next games on Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

  21. Sheila September 4, 2019 5:32 am

Congrats to Jolie for National Honors! Also appreciate very much for being a good model of frontline player keeping her hair tucked-in during game time.

Wahine and Jolie getting some pub during today’s Stanford – Florida match on right now. Pretty cool. Bobby Curran had Chris Mclachlin on this morning and mentioned Torrey has been on concussion protocol since December and doesn’t expect her back anytime soon. I would never have expected that concussions would be a problem in volleyball. Like Hawaii’s Julia Scoles it’s possible Torrey may be better off playing beach only.

  24. Cindy Luis September 4, 2019 3:05 pm

    a couple of comments.
9-10 et all We have mentioned Van Winden being out a number of times
Very much like Julie Scole’s issue as TurfWar said.
    13. Ana plays for Army. Did a capsule on all teams in today’s paper (Wednesday)
    17. Yes
    19. yes, In Case You Missed It
    22. thanks.

The Fabulous Five Freshmen: Hanna Hellvig, Riley Wagoner, Amber Igiede, Tiffany Westerberg, Braelyn Akana. What a great recruiting class. The future is very bright. Now, Ah Mow needs to get 2 setters to replace Iosia and Choy.

If the team continues to block like they did over the weekend, they could go far in the postseason. The good thing is that the team is young and should improve as the season goes on. The Oregon transfers provide stability and Iosia and Choy has experience.
