Warrior Beat: Friday Hawaii football notes
Football pool takes on a different meaning today with the Warriors’ training at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
It was a refreshing change for the Warriors, who already conducted three two-hour practices during this bye week.

A ruling on offensive lineman Michael Eletise‘s eligibility for this season is now back in the NCAA’s jurisdiction.
Eletise transferred from Arizona this summer. He requested a waiver that would allow him to play this season without redshirting. Arizona has signed off on the paperwork for its side. Now the appeal heads to the NCAA for a ruling.

Wideout Drake Stallworth gave it the ol’ college try. But after not being fully healthy for what is going on a second season, he has opted to medically retire. (Actually, medical disqualification is the NCAA-ish term.) Stallworth is expected to remain on scholarship.
Stallworth is a 2017 graduate of Folsom (Calif.) High. He redshirted in 2017. He did not play in any games last year while rehabbing an injury. He has not participated in a UH practice this year.
Sad to see Dejon Allen get cut by the Packers, he didn’t really get much chance to show his stuff so hopefully they sign him to the practice squad.

I wish that Stutzmann/Smith can get creative (when an opportunity presents itself) with the second unit O-line guys especially when Kohl comes back. Eletise, Levao, and Sunia, could make a good run blocking/goal line unit. Maybe have Furuta as FB with Reed as RB (and pitch man surprisingly) or maybe even with Stovall in wildcat. Something to get the”eyebrows” raised (in the crowd and around the nation) even more on this program. So many different skillsets now. And a lot of “Beef” up front. Unreal now.

booya, firmly agree with the concept. I’ve been thinking the same…using what Boise has done for a long time, and that is using the reserves to practice certain plays until they were uber proficient and then using them in special situations. Kept everyone involved and motivated to practice with special pride in their unit. With the depth we have, the idea has a lot of validity.
3 & 4: THEY’RE ALREADY PRACTICING IT, BUT PROBABLY ARE NOT GOING TO TRY IT IN A GAME FOR AWHILE, ESPECIALLY SINCE EVERYBODY IS TALKING ABOUT IT. COACH IS NOT STUPID.

Exactly, just like Boise. Seemed like everybody got included in something. Very creative and “raised eyebrows” around the nation which helped them become one of the elite group of 5 teams. We’ve never had depth like this here before at UH. They need to find a way to utilize everybody. Can do I think. Batoon uses a lot of personnel.

Not just short yardage packages or wildcat packages per se but creative packages in general that will bring further attention to the program (especially from potential recruits) like Boise does. Couldn’t really do something like this before but with the depth now you could make units that could run differing packages series to series. For example…Power run series with FB and H (Furuta and Keliiliki). Power RPO series (like Baltimore Ravens) with Victor as QB. Two back shotgun (Stovall and Reed) to attack edges via counter runs, pitch or flat passes using Uahinui. Or that wildcat package using Stovall. Stuff like that. Just fantasy right now but you never know. Rolo’s “Phase III” maybe.
I thought the 2 fumbles were in more crucial drives than the interceptions for some reason. I hate cringing hoping the backs won’t fumble during a run, hope they can fix that.

Numbers will be up but I don’t think up by that much. To get to 30K + I think it might take a bit of a winning streak. Unfortunately too once that streak is broken and they lose, numbers will drop again.
Hawaii people like to gamble. Tie in gambling to the games, like a raffle entry for each ticket bought. Me? I’ll be there, rain or shine.
Oregon State moving the ball pretty easily vs Ok State. I hope everyone is not underestimating the beavers based on last year only. Next week will be a tougher game than Arizona I think.

It looks like Dru Brown won’t have a chance to play except in mop up duty. The red shirt freshman is doing a terrific job.
Nevada gets a 56-yard FG from a freshman kicker as time expires to beat Purdue, 34-31. Good win for the MWC.

Would have been better too if Utah State held on.
Dru Brown played in the last minute to hand off two times.
Oklahoma State 52, Oregon State 36.
Did anyone really think Dru Brown was going to be the starter? He’s a solid back up that could step in and potentially win some games, but he gave up any chance of being a starter when he left Hawaii.

I don’t think he would have been a starter if he stayed. I think Cole and Chevan would have surpassed him

Oregon St surprised me. They appear to run the same offense as Hawaii. They will be a problem for our secondary.

Would love it if Allan has accurate info and the team is already practicing creative options for the reserves. That would make sense since the coaches are light years ahead of us. Not concerned about the discussion on the blog. After all, Boise did it for years (and still do) and still made it work. As you point out, the range of possible plays is way too wide for an opponent to spend time prepping. They need all the prep they can get for the A-team.
I believe (not sure) that OreSt tries to run some Air Raid offense and RPO. Can’t remember if they had some 5 wide formations. But, pretty sure Hawaii is the only RnS fcs school on the west coast (maybe in the nation). I’m open to correction.
OkSt has a fairly weak defense and has to outscore their opponents. OreSt started great but slowed after OkSt made some adjustments on defense and jumped ahead on the scoreboard. The OreSt D-line was ineffective after the 1st quarter.
Forgive me for repeating myself as I’ve mentioned this before…’Zona has over 900 running yards and 9 or 10 tds against OreSt over the past 2 years. Of course, that doesn’t mean it will happen this year, but it may indicate that OreSt’s defense may be improved and still not be that good.
‘Zona led the PAC 12 in rushing the past 2-3 years and had their running back, qb, and 3 of their O-line returning. I was totally impressed with the way Hawaii handled their running game. Also, Luton is nowhere close to Tate’s mobility as a qb. If the Warriors jump ahead early, it should allow the D to unleash the pass rush. I know it’s too early to get sassy after one game, but that’s the joy of the next week after a win!
