  8. H-Man August 23, 2019 6:01 pm

    Cindy, Thank you the updates.
Wow, looks like the coaches have a big job ahead to figure out the right combination. Guess the freshmen are not playing like freshmen to make things interesting.

  9. Cindy Luis August 23, 2019 6:12 pm

    8. totally agree. Westerberg now playing OH with Akana at MB

  10. Cindy Luis August 23, 2019 6:15 pm

Team that had Iosia ending up with wins 25-21.
some impressive hits by freshmen Hellvig, Westerberg, Akana and Igiede. As well as newcomers Rasmussen and Van Sickle.
Think they’re playing another set. Helps there is AC in here.

  11. Cindy Luis August 23, 2019 6:37 pm

Team with Iosia jumped out from 15-14 to 21-15 lead. Choy switched and behind Hellvig’s serving, closed it out 25-15.

  13. H-Man August 23, 2019 6:41 pm

Sounds like everyone having fun. Aloha !

  14. Brandon August 23, 2019 6:50 pm

Cindy, based on what you saw, what would be your lineup?

  15. Cindy Luis August 23, 2019 9:07 pm

    14. I honestly don’t know.
The White went without a libero in final set and won 25-15. They are considering that option where they have five attackers.
I would say Iosia and Rasmussen for sure. Van Sickle has a great serve. Her parents are her for a few weeks.
Thought the freshmen all played well. Hellvig very polished. Wagoner very versatile. she went from libero to outside. Alana looked good but that’s going to depend on the matchups. she was at MB and OH. Westerberg gives them options at MB and OH. And Igiede very physical.

Aloha Cindy! Were there any interesting comments from the people watching the scrimmage? Did Robin try any practices this past week in a 6-2?

  17. H-Man August 24, 2019 11:20 am

Nice article in this morning’s paper.

  18. Cindy Luis August 24, 2019 12:07 pm

    16. didn’t really speak to anyone after the scrimmage, was doing interviews then had to leave for the office. Noticeable oohs and ahhs over the hard hits and great digs. Some of the boosters said they were really looking forward to the season, impressed by the quality of play. Was able to say hi to Van Sickle’s parents, both of whom i covered when they were playing. Mom at HPU and Dad at UH. Also said hi to Akana’s dad. Mom couldn’t make it because of work.
    BTW it is spelled RobYn
    17. thank you. hard to do without official stats.
Team taking off the next two days, Ah Mow wants to give legs a rest. Back at it Monday

17 agreed, very nice article in this morning’s paper, Cindy! It answered my own previous question about whether they would go to a 6-2. Why have only 4 hitters out there when you can have 5 that can hit from anywhere? It would be totally awesome to see the Freshmen in there showing Hawaii what they got. I hope they won’t get toooo nervous about what the crowd is going to give them this Friday. Sometimes, when nerves gets in the way, people have a tendency to fall back on old habits.
I’m glad to hear about Westerberg playing OH as well. In her recruiting videos, she reminded me so much of Nikki Taylor hitting from the 3 meter line. And her hitting that “X” play will be one of the tools the setters will have in their pockets to fool our opponents.
Either way, I’m really looking forward to the start of the season! GO BOWS!!!

My bad, Cindy! My bad Robyn!!!! Oh man…that was sacrilege! My sincere apologies! GO BOWS!

  21. darkfire35 August 24, 2019 4:45 pm

Aloha Cindy! Will you have a pre-season special this week as you have in years past? Mahalo nui loa for all you do for the sport and for us! GO BOWS!!

  22. Hot August 24, 2019 5:20 pm

Gong didn’t get to play Libero? Hmmm looks like Wagoner ahead of her at L depth chart. Thought Gong played great in the scrimmage last year and had memorable moments last season.

  23. Brandon August 24, 2019 6:34 pm

    Aloha Cindy.

Is Jolie hand ok? Seemed to be taped up.

  24. Cindy Luis August 25, 2019 2:20 pm

    21. Yes, it comes out Friday, day of opener
    22. Gong was a DS. I wouldn’t put too much into her not being in at libero. As mentioned, at the end one side went without a libero, going with 5 hitters. I believe Wagoner will be too valuable as an OH and able to hit the BIC than to be used as L.
    23. her hand has been taped since she got her. She had been injured at Oregon. Lately more precautionary IMHO.
