Kicker Matthew Shipley makes 2020 commit to Hawaii football
The Hawaii football team added the fifth oral commitment to the 2020 recruiting class with a pledge from Matthew Shipley of Liberty Hill (Texas) High.
Here’s the skinny:
> Shipley is 6-1, 175 and in a practice once launched a kick 73 yards. Chris Sailer, who runs elite camps for kickers and punters, said Shipley has 55-plus-yard range and competes well under pressure.
> Shipley earned high marks from Sailer, as well as a high rating (fifth nationally in 2020 class) from Kohl’s Kicking. Shipley gained notice during his performance at the Texas Spring Showcase.
> His older brother, Michael Shipley, is the placekicker at West Texas A&M. Both brothers train under Scott Blanton, who played for the Washington Redskins for four seasons through 1998. Shipley follows the career of Dan Bailey of the Minnesota Vikings.
> Shipley said his scholarship is for placekicking, but he also would welcome an opportunity to be used additionally as a punter.
> Ryan Meskell, UH’s No. 1 kicker, will be a senior this coming season.
> Earlier, the Warriors received pledges from slotback/running back Kilohana Haasenritter of Hilo High, offensive lineman Jake Tuatagaloa of Mililani High, wideout Tamatoa Mokiao-Atimalala of Campbell High, and linebacker Ezra Evaimalo of Kamehameha Schools.

What’s interesting is players who are offered really early, eighth or ninth grade, actually have a high percentage of turning into pretty good players.
Three years ago, I wrote about Tuitele, a freshman defensive lineman from Saint Louis, being offered a UH scholarship. He was so giddy. I mean, somebody wanted him even though he wasn’t even a big deal yet. And then I went down to the school, and he’s posing for pictures for the Warrior Beat, and he’s so friendly and happy.
And then he becomes a stud and three years later, all the big schools are all over him.
It does take a skill to identify players early.
Welcome, welcome welcome Matthew to UH football. A number of good kickers played for Hawaii and entered the pros. The most notable is Jason Elam who was drafted in the third round and played fifteen years for the Denver Broncos. You have a lot to look forward to in experiencing college life and UH football!
