Former UH associate head coach Tino Reyes has been named the  interim head coach of the UH-Hilo women’s volleyball team.

His first act? He will hire Mike Wilton, former UH head coach, as his assistant. Wilton’s wife is from Hilo, and he once owned a house there.

“For sure,” Reyes said of adding Wilton.

They coached the Warriors for 17 seasons. Before that, they coached the Cal Poly women’s team.

UH head coach Greg McMackin leaves today to conduct a series of football clinics and lectures in Japan.

The intent of the trip is to maintain relationships between UH and athletic programs in Japan. The hope is that UH, which is looking to expand its recruiting base in all sports, will eventually land several players from Japan. From that, UH could build a following in Asia that could help marketing.

After UH’s goodwill trip last year, about 25 football coaches from Japan participated in the Warriors’ football coaches clinic. A college team has promised to train on the UH campus for a week next month.

The Warrior volleyball team left today for a crucial four-match road trip to California.

And, of course, we know about the significance of tomorrow’s basketball game between UH and Boise State.

Busy day for BG. Today is the birthday for BG’s wife (Betty) and daughter (Hina).

And let’s not forget a happy birthday wish to our silent blogger — Wreckneyze.

It is good to remember that the tea kettle, although up to its neck in hot water, continues to sing.

    Yeeeeaaahh. Top 10.

I feel like we are in the doldrums. March madness will be here soon to temporarily tend to my sports/football withdrawals. Spring Football cannot be here soon enough.

  8. Bigislandkurt March 3, 2010 7:03 am

TS……any insight on how the Big Island (Jordan Loefler) is doing? I’ve been hearing some good things. I also heard that Brett Leonard moved to guard.

    BIK

  9. Stephen Tsai March 3, 2010 7:07 am

    Loeffler has been doing well.
It appears he filled out. Wasn’t he really skinny in high school?
He’s doing field drills with the rest of the linemen every other morning.

Shoji gets list of candidates for Sealy’s job today . Rumor, only 3 applied ?

  11. Stephen Tsai March 3, 2010 7:17 am

    Shoji list:

    That I don’t know.
Let me tell you, that when applications go to Paula, they are locked up. Paula gives up nothing, not to coaches or administrators.
That leaves reporters to ask the applicants.

  12. Pomai March 3, 2010 7:25 am

ST when this team from Japan comes over to train is it going to open to the public? Would be kind of neat to see what they have.

  13. Pomai March 3, 2010 7:27 am

If they come over after spring practice starts could there be a small kind scrimmage in the making?

  18. NYUH March 3, 2010 7:53 am

I’m with you Bigislandkurt, usually a good basketball season helps tide this dead period. Unfortunately the best news during this period is no news. To make my case:

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/355711-to-fire-or-not-to-fire-should-these-10-coaches-get-the-boot#page/3

“Sure, you can fire Greg McMackin, notable slurrer of Notre Dame football and Orwellian enemy of the free press.

But who are you gonna get to replace him?”

    Pomai,

Don’t expect a scrimmage. When Kansai Gaidai U. came over for a preseason game against SLS in ’98, it wasn’t even close – 46-0.

I understand that but I think it would be a good thing for the players from Japan to go up against a D1 team to at least get a idea of how the have progressed, It wouldn’t have to be a full on scrimmage but maybe a little 7 on 7

  32. djmitcho March 3, 2010 8:28 am

    Happy Girls Day!

  38. Da Punchbowl Kid March 3, 2010 9:12 am

If I try to be a s smart as say, al, here’s what I would say about the Japanese team and a local scrimmage:

Form two squads with players from Japan and Hawaii on each side, and have a limited contact scrimmage. Sure, its not a full fledged scrimmage, but it would help to strengthen UH’s ties with the Japanes football community and give the Japanes squad at least a small taste of local competition.

  39. Da Punchbowl Kid March 3, 2010 9:13 am

Oh yeah- keep the Hawaii participants limited to the scout team.

  40. jm2375 March 3, 2010 9:14 am

    Happy Girls Day!

Happy Birthday to Betty, Hina & Wreck!

Good luck to the Warriors and Wahine!

Will we ever see a Japanese university baseball team here again? Or does the shortened season not allow enough time for exhibition games?

Is baseball the second “national” sport of Japan?

Hard to displace “sumo” as #1.

  45. Da Punchbowl Kid March 3, 2010 9:25 am

That should read “Japanese” above. Two times. Sorry. I was having such a hard time trying to be as smart as al that I forgot how to spell.

  46. d1島 March 3, 2010 9:42 am

    RedZone,

Can’t recall, but I wouldn’t doubt the claim.
They were so “fascinated” by the size of the SLS OL in particular when they first saw them. I remember watching them in front of the fieldhouse taking pictures standing next to a coupla guys and giggling like…..well, schoolgirls. 🙄

  47. (Jesse)James March 3, 2010 9:44 am

  61. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc March 3, 2010 10:31 am

Spent a good deal of time writing updates on a variety of sports-related public policy issues only to somehow delete my work. Don’t have time to put it together again, but I did want to report that the person responsible for the Budweiser Bullpen Blue Tent is out of the office until tomorrow. Will report back here as soon as I find out wassup.

Have a good rest of the day.

    HiHo

  64. Kazz March 3, 2010 10:43 am

    Basketball rumors abound…

    Reggie Theus eh?

Sounds good, but is it? Is someone like a Reggie Theus going to commit to Hawaii or use Hawaii as a “holding area” until the next big NCAA or NBA gig comes calling?

Is Theus willing to take the time to turn UH men’s basketball into it’s own “BIG TIME GIG”? If he is willing to commit to MORE than 2-3 years. Then a rumored Theus hire or courtship would be a great step in the right direction as opposed to a “quickie” nut buster.

June Jones was the “model” for what qualities a head coach would need to “reconstruct” a damaged UH program. We all know the challeges ALL UH programs face without having to repeat it.

  65. Bulla March 3, 2010 10:47 am

happy burfday to betty, hina, and my big boi wreck!!!

  66. Kazz March 3, 2010 10:57 am

    Gilligan’s Island Movie??? 😯

They should go DARK with it and I don’t mean like some magical island that can travel back in time stuff either like “Lost”.

I wanna see an episode where they cannibalize someone… best bet, not to eat the Skipper yet. Start off small like Gilligan aka “appetizer”…

  67. Kazz March 3, 2010 11:01 am

    (J)J,

    It’s not “Ginger”, it’s “Gin-JAH” as in:

“ho braddah, wot get inside dis chicken fo make ’em so ono?” “GIN -JAH” 😎

  68. A-House March 3, 2010 11:04 am

What conference does The Citidal play in? I know it is some military-type school like Texas A&M.

People laugh when the hear that A&M represents “agriculture and mining”.

  69. rage777 March 3, 2010 11:09 am

Maybe we can get A.C. to come back as a coach. His time with the Nuggets are looking like it’s coming to an end. He can hire Alika as his assistant, or maybe Alika should be the coach and A.C. the assistant.

  70. A-House March 3, 2010 11:16 am

    jus a wondering:

if all the D1 schools in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisana all break away and form their own “super” BCS conference –

how will this affect the collegiate football and basketball landscape? seem to make geographic sense from the expense, travel time, recruiting, etc. point of view – biggest rivals could be the SEC and BIG10.

this would take away schools from the BIG 12, MWC and WAC – rough count of 14 teams.

  71. SailorBlue March 3, 2010 11:18 am

    Happy birthday Betty and Hina!

    Go Warriors!

  73. BG March 3, 2010 11:37 am

    GOOD MORNING TEAM!

Just showed Betty and Hina all the birthday wishes. They were just thrilled with the thought that folks could be thinking of them today. Huge thank-you to ST!!!

Back to “Quantitative Reasoning for Business” homework….

BTW. Kazz, thanks for all the stuff on the softball team. Last year, I had John Nakamura (volunteer coach) on my softball team to ask questions, but he’s no longer with the team this year.

  74. Pomai March 3, 2010 11:59 am

From just Googleing Japanese American Football, it seems that it has caught on already, from what I could see they could have some DB, LB and even Slots that could play D1 ball.

  75. Jack Flash March 3, 2010 12:02 pm

Are there any updates on the Pac-10 adding teams? Hawaii should stay on top of this.

  84. Kazz March 3, 2010 12:58 pm

    A-House,

BTW, if you and the Mrs gonna come softball on Saturday afternoon/evening bring a good jacket or a blanket perhaps. It gets windy on a “normal” day but if the weather keeps up the way it is… oh boy… 😯

I swear, that is like the coldest venue on campus. No wonder ST recommended the chili a while ago!

I hope the softball games aren’t televised.
They always stick me in the wind tunnel.

  89. BigIslandkurt March 3, 2010 1:10 pm

ST…..The Big Island wasn’t really that skinny in HIgh school. He was just a tall, rangy youngsta that is still growing into his man body. Mind you, his “boy body” was already 6’5 275. I believe he always hovered between 275 and 285. He’s a tackle more in the range of the jet’s d’brckshaw Ferguerson. Tall and long. But the bradduh has some base too. LIke I said earlier, Jordan Loefler has the potential to be one of the greatest UH tackles ever. I see him maxing out at about 305-310lbs. I just gotta remember that this is still a young boy. Still growing. But his enthusiasm is infectious. Watch that boy. He’s gonna make the state proud.

    BIK

  90. SteveM March 3, 2010 1:12 pm

You folks don’t think Koakane could play Gilligan? My first impression too, but after further review…. 😯

Sardines, onion, chili pepper and poi. The lunch of champions.

Save the yellow oil to make fried rice later. Mmm mm mmm.

  92. Kazz March 3, 2010 1:16 pm

Get baseball all weekend so no softball on TV and I don’t think Sunday’s softball games are going to be televised either, so you’re safe ST! 🙂

I think it kinda sucks that so far the only televised game was that bad opener against McNeese St.

  94. Ralph March 3, 2010 1:23 pm

  95. Mrs. A-House March 3, 2010 1:31 pm

Good Afternoon & Happy Girls’ Day Everybody!

    To Wreck – Betty – Hina –

Best wishes, my dear friends, for all the very best on this special birthday…and many, many more.

    A-House –

When does “Girls’ Day” no longer apply to your wife and adult daughter? Just wondering. Past experiences have taught me never to “expect” gifts/goodies, but . . .

    Kazz –

What a character you are. Thanks for making my day. I was so pleased to be in the running to be cast as Mrs. Howell. My competition is very tough, and I would expect to come in a distant third to the other two “stars” nominated. Thanks for thinking about me, though. You made me very happy.

And, yes, I know how to bundle up against the cold winds of Manoa. We’ve attended enough baseball games in the past to be prepared…especially when the softball stadium faces the cold winds coming down the valley. Looking forward to the chili. Hope they don’t run out.

    ST –

You mentioned a “gas leak” in Manoa. I can only confirm a biological, man-made “gas leak” in Maunawili that occurs daily. If no one fesses up to being the culprit, you can point a finger at me. Why else do you think I can complete my household chores in under an hour??…natural gas propelled movements always do the trick.

  96. HiFlyer March 3, 2010 1:34 pm

Kazz – you gotta add curveball to the captains list, and me as Mr Howell no way.

I got back from the swap meet a little while ago and there seems to be a lot of repair work going on at the stadium. I can see shy there will be no spring game there.

It looks like they are focussing on the roof and the makai section of the stadium. They are also constructing a lot of staging at the other sections except for the south end zone section. It appears so far that the roof will be green.

I took some pics which are being uploaded to photobucket right now. It is the first time I am doing this and it is taking a long time. I will post link once it is done for those who are interested.

TWO Russian men died in a sauna after jumping into a plunge pool that had accidentally been heated to boiling point, investigators and media said.

The two men jumped into the pool to cool down after sweating in a steam room.

A third man tried to save the victims but was unable to pull the men out of the boiling water, Komsomolskaya Pravda tabloid reported today.

The two men’s bodies were discovered in the sauna in the city of Kirov in central Russia on February 18 and “their death was caused by overheating”, the Kirov regional investigative committee confirmed in a statement.

The water in the pool was “overheated due to an error by one of the victims,” investigators said.

Saunas usually include a cold plunge pool.

The men were named by investigators as the director of an old people’s home and the director of a residential home for people with psychiatric problems.

    someone already hit MegaBux there.

John W. Johnson of Denver, Colo. hit a $10,422,754.08 Megabucks® MegaJackpot® at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport on Sunday, February 21, 2010.

Johnson had just arrived in Reno with his wife and teammates for the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Open Championship that kicked-off this weekend. The lucky winner said he had just deplaned when he approached the Megabucks® machine and deposited $20. After playing just $12, the MegaJackpot® hit, making Johnson the first Megabucks® winner of 2010.

congratulations to Tino Reyes, he will put UH Hilo back on track and be a force in volleyball

under Bruce Atkinson, UH Hilo was:
    2007 23-5
    2008 21-7
    2009 25-2

What would meet your definition or standard of “back on track”?

I would be concerned about maintaining this level. As I recall, Mike Wilton’s time as coach of the Cal Poly women did not end well.

  141. BigIslandkurt March 3, 2010 5:01 pm

    @ Ralph #94….

Thank you El Guapo for the clarification. Reyes will take the job with TREMENDOUS pressure to succeed. Dr. Bruce took HIlo to Amazing heights over the past three years. Hope TR can bring in a few more Brazilians! Sounds like Josimara Pinhero will still be in Hilo after graduation. I sure hope TR utilizes these great recruiting tools.

UH-HILO Volleyball is back. WE been back for the last three years and the momentum is strong. Like June Jones and UH, Bruce Atkinson truly believes that he is handing over a good program to the new coach. All of next years’ recruits are all ready in place.

I trust you will say the same to all who have given love and aloha to “the beast,” who is often mentioned on this blog with great love and adoration? Probably not. Then why would you direct that last post to me? Fair enough, free country. Here’s my response:

I am not an agent for the Big Island or any other player. However, I am one who have worked with countless college students and many a college athlete. I will give that same aloha to the POTENTIAL of any kid if they got it. No be so quick to pour your sour opinion on my excitement for Jordan’s (or any kid’s) potential. The only thing “ridiculous” about this exchange is your spinning of my post as some ungodly pressure-filled curse that I’m putting on this boy. I’m just showing some aloha to this boy and his journey. If you cannot see that, then maybe you need to take one happy pill. I’m sure you heard the old adage about “if you no more nothing nice to say, then….”

A person familiar with the decision says the Washington Redskins have put a first-round tender on restricted free agent quarterback Jason Campbell.

The tender is worth about $3.1 million, the move means other teams would have to give up a first-round pick to sign Campbell.

RE: #154 . . . I think you’re referring to Sharon Peterson, who won numerous national championships while at UHH . . .

  156. hilobilly March 3, 2010 8:35 pm

    #154 Ralph…

Sharon Peterson’s UHH teams were perennial contenders for the national title, but the dynamics of recruiting & style of play did change dramatically. Her championship teams were really home-grown; foreign players later created more of an international style of competition/style that teams either adapted to or didn’t. Bruce Atkinson was successful & brought energy, recruiting skill, & renewed focus here, but somehow, you could sense that UHH was just a stepping-stone to other coaching jobs. So be it, you do what you gotta do!

We’re looking forward, though, to seeing what Tino & Mike will be doing over here. For sure, we’ll have all of the Leialoha & Keaukaha ‘ohana in force at games, the gym is going to be rocking! Games are really fun at the Kawili St gym

I hope he was proactive an asked coaches he was interested to apply

  168. whitey March 3, 2010 10:21 pm

  178. Garret March 4, 2010 3:58 am

According to Chris Johnson’s Twitter feed, Kenny Turner signed with NMSU…so, UH will face him this season and for the next few seasons.

It appears that SMU did not offer Turner due to concerns by SMU’s President. I would have preferred that Turner not sign with a WAC team so that UH wouldn’t have to face him, but it will be interesting to see how he does on the field.

  179. protector March 4, 2010 4:50 am

    Garret, re:Turner

Agree with you on both counts. I also would’ve preferred not having Ioane & a few other local boys playing against UH in the coming years (via the WAC or Pac-10).

  180. d1島 March 4, 2010 5:41 am

    Great Morning All!

Good Luck to all the RoadBows this weekend!

  181. Garret March 4, 2010 5:49 am

    protector,

Ioane is even worse to me than the Turner situation because he went to BSU, the team that UH has to beat to win a WAC title. NMSU won’t be a threat to win the WAC during Turner’s limited time there…but BSU creating a pipeline into Hawaii for recruiting is a big concern!

  182. Garret March 4, 2010 5:53 am

This is a good example about the importance of a football team’s success on a school. After their Hawaii Bowl season, a study found that SMU got:

$30 million in publicity from being in the Hawaii Bowl

25% increase in donations to the Athletic Department

35% increase in applications for admissions into SMU

45% increase in traffic on their University website

All this happened in just one year…and this is good data the next time there is an argument that UH should cut Athletic Department funding and when people try to say that Athletics don’t matter much to a school.

  183. d1島 March 4, 2010 6:04 am

    Garret,

Agree that it’s nice to quantify the effects to the school.

I guess they equate $30M in publicity to the cost of a 3 hour infomercial on network primetime?

My only other comment is that it’s important to *WIN* a bowl game…can’t imagine that Reno is seeing the same kind of gains.

  184. anonymous March 4, 2010 6:04 am

I think competition is good. With WAC teams getting stronger with better players, even with former Hawaii HS players on other teams, or Turner going to NMST, it makes for a better league. What would you rather have a watered down league or a league that’s stronger for UH? Easy or hard competition? There’s no doubt in my mind that a top recruit looking at signing with UH gravitates more into coming here if the competition in the league is better. Plus it may influence other Hawaii HS players into joining the WAC or UH once they see more and more Hawaii HS players on other WAC teams. Trust me UH isn’t going to duck because of a few good players entering the league.

  185. d1島 March 4, 2010 6:05 am

    Remembrella da umbrella today!

    HiHo….

  186. whitey March 4, 2010 6:54 am

Good morning Tsaikos. Enjoy your day!!!

  187. Garret March 4, 2010 7:22 am

    d1shima,

I think that they also take into account the stories about the team and school leading up to the game and after the game. ESPN covered SMU a lot before the game because they were broadcasting the Hawaii Bowl.

It is amazing to see the jump in donations and applications from high school students. I think other schools have conducted similar studies and shown similar increases when their teams did well. This is another reason why it would be great for the Warriors to have a good season and play in the Hawaii Bowl (or a BCS bowl) this year.

Garret ~ Those are amazing statistics. Even tho we lost the SB, what do you think our numbers would have been comparatively?

  191. Garret March 4, 2010 7:55 am

    Kekoa,

I know that I saw articles published in 2007 that had indicated that applications to UH were way up in 2007 as the football team had such great success and visibility. I’ll bet donations were huge then also.

Remember, the Ching Foundation donation would *not* have happened had the problems with UH Athletic facilities not gotten so much publicity…if UH had not had such good seasons in 2006 and 2007, would the media and public have cared to investigate UH’s facility situation as much? Colt only had a platform to speak about the soap because of his success in the 2006 season.

UT-Austin has quantified a *huge* increase in donations and student interest in periods where the fotball team had success vs. when the football team struggled. We are talking an 8-figure difference in donations to the school! When the team gets to the national championship game, the school makes an AMAZING amount of money.

For example, tickets for the Texas vs. USC national championship game were in great demand of course. So, Texas gave their biggest donors the right to buy the tickets first. One thing they did to raise even more money for the school is that they contacted donors that were at the level where they were on the borderline or well below the amount needed to get tickets through the school. The told the donors that they could get tickets at face value (as many tickets as they had season tickets for) if they donated X amount more…and many people did of course. That money went to the University, and since Texas is a public school that ended up saving their state quite a bit of money since the Athletic Department turned over tens of millions of surplus money to the University.

The school got a lot more money, the donors took the tax deduction for the donation, and the main people that lost out is the ticket agencies that normally scalp the tickets to those people. Many of the people ended up staying at the higher donor level since they were there already due to their donation to get Rose Bowl tickets.

If HF had conducted an organized ticket procedure for the Sugar Bowl and not turned down so many tickets initially, he could have made a LOT more money for UH. Tying the purchase of tickets to the number of season tickets a person had or how many season tickets they were willing to commit to for the 2008 season would have been a good start.

if those numbers are true about smu’s increases and their football team’s success, then, i would think that jj will soon be annointed the “messiah of football” at smu.

    Garret re:189
Besides those things you mentioned, the perception of the program has changed exponentially. Going into the game, everyone had the attitude of “what a nice story, 1st bowl in 25 years” but after the win, all of a sudden everyone is saying “we are a team to watch out for”. Recuiting this year compared to the 1st was like night and day, and with this next class, which we are already starting to send offers to, we are starting to see the real change. We are beating out big-time schools to a few recruits.

Amazing what 1 game can do.

the study was done by an independant company, so pretty unreal what they’ve come up with.

We had a high school coaches clinic last night. We set-up the rooms for about 100 coaches. I think double that amount showed up.

You need to really think about building up this site into a dominant authority in this field. You obviously have a fundamental handle of the topics all of us are searching for on this site anyways and you could possibly even earn a buck or three off of some offers. I would look into following recent headlines and increasing the amount of write ups you make and I bet you’d start earning some awesome traffic soon. Just a thought, good luck in whatever you do!
