Congratulations to Shannon Dresser, who was named Miss O‘ahu last night.
Shannon not only is a baton performer at UH events and a member of the UH track team, she also mentors students.

One of the nice things about Murakami Stadium is that UH was able to clear space on the outfield wall to honor Derek Tatsuno.
Which brings us to next month’s start of football spring practice.
Each year, players switch numbers. And for the past two years, associate head coach Rich Miano has made sure no player takes Colt Brennan’s No. 15 or Tim Chang’s No. 14.
Now is the time to retire the numbers permanently. There are no rules to go through, like the naming of a UH facility (although it could be argued that Brennan was a UH institution).
So if nobody is using the numbers now, why bother with an official act? Simple. Money. UH can then sell No. 15 and No. 14 retro jerseys, T-shirts and other memorabilia. And if Na Koa does it, it won’t have to split the profits with auxiliary services, which oversees H logo products.
It also will replenish Na Koa’s coffers. Na Koa already subsidizes summer school, the personnel director’s position, and training table meals.

Interesting note from a reader to the Na Koa head:
How about restructuring your membership levels to have members PICK their own gifts; such as Warrior polo,T-shirts or caps, game tickets, etc. for each level of membership. In the past, Na Koa would just send me the same black polo shirt that said “Na Koa” each year but I would much rather have a current Warrior logo shirt or cap or jacket (since some road games are in cold places!).
As a benefit for mainland chapter members; how about offering them free tickets to road games of their choice AND maybe a special invite to meet the coaches or players before or after the game–that would excite a lot of us die-hard fans. I think we discussed some of this.
Thinking outside the box to expand Na Koa; how about changing the name to “Hawaii Na Koa Football Club” so that maybe we can solicit new members on the mainland, who may have never heard of Na Koa and may want to be a sponsor–or take in a road game or have their company name listed as one of the sponsors on something? You mentioned there are a lot of former players living here and it would be exciting if they could join our group and also meet them.
We hope we can make this mainland chapter a reality; as we all want our Warriors to reach the next level!
P.S. Can Na Koa solicit funds for special needs, for example as you mentioned when the team goes to Army this year; and then has to stay on the mainland for one week, and take a charter to Colorado? I am sure if you put this out on your website, more people will donate if they know it is for a special purpose and you can offer the gifts I mentioned above as incentive. This would help free up funds for other Warrior needs.

You’re right, ST. Retire the numbers and market them. It’ll be like inventing a new logo or a new line of products to sell. As their history lives on both should generate decent long term revenue streams for the program.

Tonight’s 5 pm Basebow game start means that DrDoc cannot be there at first pitch. He has to take the bus back to Kailua to pick up the car at the repair shop and then drive back into town. He’ll come in when the the gates open up at the bottom of the fifth inning.

A quick reminder: If you have strong feelings about the item before the City Council this Wednesday – see my post in yesterday’s blog – or the items listed above or the issues surrounding a student activities fee, please speak up and let the appropriate officials know. They are NOT mind-readers.
Remember the flag pole issue that stirred up a big hullaballoo lst week. Rep. Cabanilla, Chair of the Housing Committee, said that no one showed to speak for or against the bill when it was posted for hearing. No one called her office or any other legislative office either.
Gvernoment officials respond to silence in different ways. If no one from the public shows up to speak for or against something, then the item is likely to be tabled. If only one side shows up, then the vote will go for them. If both sides show up, then other issues come into play.
With respect to the change to item coming up on Wednesday, the UH Administration provided strong support for the chance as did the Athletic Department. Thus, the compromise.
Pomai raised the issue of profit-sharing. Unfortunately, the City is now allowed to do that, but it could make a gift to the University or it could waive the fee if it went through the process. However, in these tight times, that isn’t going to happen,.
Trust me on this one – the swap meet vendor representatives will show up at the meeting. If no one with an opposing view shows up, then you know what will happen. I’m not sure what the Athletic Department’s current position is on this, but I do know that they were instrumental in getting the change in the first place.
As soon as I post this, I’ll give Carl Clapp a call and find out whe their current position is.

soon you are out of numbers for 105 roster players.
retire one number and you need to retire another number.
i’d rather see the great ones enshrined in another way. perhaps in the athletic department’s waiting/sitting room where new recruits/parents gather to meet with coaches where the “wall of fame” depicts the great ones with autographed pictures, jerseys (altho not retired), pictures/collages, and also include the many successful athletes/alumni who went on to higher heights, nfl, olympics, and professional business fields and the like.
awarding high profile recruits a number 14, 15, or 54 would lend itself as a huge recruiting incentive as well.
still sell the retro jerseys of the great ones. i don’t know how much is allowed in gifts to recruits but having those retro jerseys in the hands of a new guy could also be a nice thing.

I think by having a countdown clock it builds excitement for the fans. And it serves as a motivation for the athletes. Also it conveys a message that the school is caring. With each tick of the clock the athletes can sense the urgency of being prepared. And for the fans and supporters it can be captivating for them in getting behind the team, too.

i like that idea, i’ve seen it with other schools……currently looking at the schedule for 2010, it says we play USC on 9-2-10, is that a typo?
with that in mind, we have 191 days to prepare, but not really because the team is not practicing 7 days a week, not even 5 days a week. realistically, if you take 3 days a week between now and then, that would be generous, calculations would determine approximately 81 days……and then, even those are not all day affairs….say 3 hour practice will give us 243 hours out of 1944 hours, so the clock is ticking…………………..

I agreed with Jack Flash and Countdown Clock. Maybe not just at the lobby or wall of the Athletic Complex but for Football, at Aloha Stadium; for Volleyball and Basketball, etc., at the Arena; for Baseball, at the Murakami Stadium; can also honor soccer players, swimmers, etc. Maybe you can also make use of the lower campus area – the wall of fame by the roadside. Use these jersey #s to recruit new generation of prize recruits!! Yes! Selling retro jersey is a good idea… Another way is to bring back these players one group at a time and to have a charged autograph session to raise fund for the Athletic department.
However, ultimately, a sports fee which will allow students to watch at least 6 games of their choice. For each game, reserve a known number of decent seats for students. And students can choose 1 football game, and/or 1 or 2 volleyball games, and/or 1 or 2 basketball games, and/or 1 baseball game, etc. until he/she reached the 6 games limit per year. They can select their 3 games of choice once they’ve paid their tuitions and fees for the semester and then another 3 games when they paid their tuition the next semester. Since the games are first-come, first-served, there will be an incentive to pay tuition and fees as early as possible in order to get their hands on the bigger games. Of course, the numbers I’ve came up with is just through the thin air. I think $75 fees per semester for 3 game tickets and also give the students the rights to use of the athletic facilities such as tennis court, basketball court, swimming pool, track, gym, etc. sounds reasonable. 24-Hour fitness would have cost the students a bundle and that’s just for the use of their gyms. Maybe UH athletes can take turn, host exercise classes each week so students can participate as a give back to the college. This will give the athletic department goodwill and help our student population stay healthy!!

Rainbow Wahine Softball Sweeps WAC Honors
Redshirt Freshman Centerfielder Kelly Majam and Freshman Pitcher Kaia Parnaby snagged their first WAC Player of the Week Honors today.
Looks like Majam is averaging similar #s to what she has doing in high school and Parnaby is becoming the one thing we lacked last season in another reliable and effective pitcher.

Since there is a break between the Army and Colorado games which might be spent in Vegas (depending on tour/personal plans), that week will have a section also (similar to Las Vegas last year) for get-togethers,

“Ariana”? You mean Brianna Linton? I believe she was a walk on, I could be wrong though.
It was terrible to hear she left the team due to “personal issues”. She was on her way to gaining some serious playing time as she was contributing very well.
Also, I thought that the transfer of Jennifer Hamilton at the beginning of the season effected this season as well. Despite the troubles of last season for the entire team, I liked what I saw out of her, she was a speedy player with good hands and a good 1-1 defender, and with Ayabe going down, Hamilton could have slid in to give Kanekoa and or Galdones a rest from time to time. Kanekoa is really over-worked right now.
I’ll hang on to them! Tight as I can!

One option that I would like from Na Koa is the option to get *no* gift. I realized that a significant portion of my donation last year was not deductible due to the value of the gift I received. I’d rather have the deduction than the gift (which I gave to Mrs. Momo). Also, I’d rather Na Koa save their money and use *all* of my gift for the Warriors instead of spending some of it on a gift for me…especially if then that gift reduces my tax deduction.
I realize that Na Koa probably has learned that the appreciation gifts (polo shirts, etc.) helps encourage UH fans to donate to them and that it is a competitive market for donors in this tough economy. However, free pens, shirts, tickets, etc., really end up reducing how much Na Koa nets from its donations, and the money Na Koa nets goes to the football program.
I wouldn’t say anything if I wasn’t worried that the budget would be getting squeezed next year as donations decline with a tough economy and cuts in the budget. Maybe things are best how they are and the giveaways bring in more money than they cost. However, it would be nice if there was an option to get no gift for those people who just want to help the Warrior program and get a tax deduction.
Some things that Tom suggested such as meetings with coaches and/or players *would* be a huge incentive for people to donate and would not cost UH anything. I would expect those types of special meetings to only occur for higher level donors, to avoid having the coaches and players from being overwhelmed by meeting too many people.

I was only the Engineering professor asked to attend an eye-opening fundraiser for Santa Clara University back when I worked for them. It had only their biggest donors in the LA area and in that one day they raised an *amazing* amount of money. It was held in this very, very nice location in Hollywood and I was amazed at how normal all the big donors acted–nobody bragged about their money or about their donations, they just discretely gave checks to the people sitting at the welcoming table.
That one night raised many times UH’s Athletic Department deficit. It helps when some of their grads made it big in Hollywood or business and wanted to give back. Kurt Rambis and his wife were even there and they were really nice to talk with also.
Many mahalos Stephen for posting my message to Nakoa! Hopefully some of these ideas will be done to get our Warriors back to the Sugar Bowl or BCS title game! We have to think big to attain our dreams!

It may be a cultural thing in “Hawaii”, but more graduates are linked to their high school than to UH. Not for the A-House family – only thing that counts has to do with UH – especially football and cannot deny that we have made very special friends through this blog!
I find this intriguing as freindships cultured at college will be the ones that sustain you post-college. Very few will be from high school days unless it carried over to college.
On the mailand it’s just the opposite.
I’m sure that there are many UH grads who did well, but chose not to donate.

Yes, from what I understand people in Hawaii in general donate more to their high schools that people in the mainland, while mainland people give more to their college. That is bad for UH’s funding.
One other big difference is that some people attend Santa Clara University for religious reasons, and a church affiliation probably encourages more people to donate more. I was also interested to learn that the Jesuits who are professors there donate their entire salaries to the University and live on campus in the dorms/residences. So, when they ask a potential donor for a donation, that donor knows that the person they are talking to donates their entire salary to the University!
Stanford has taken a different tactic for fundraising. They take advantage of being in Silicon Valley by investing in the startups from many of their professors and students and providing incubation facilities to help the companies get started. So, they can end up making a lot of money from the stock they own in the company, plus the founders of the company feel indebted to the school and donate generously when they hit it big.
Maybe UH could start a program to help startups by professors and UH graduates? That could pay off big in the end and would also help the Hawaii economy. I know a UH engineering professor who started a high-tech company who had to get SBA loans and I don’t think he got any help from UH for his company.
Stanford also takes advantage of their location in Silicon Valley by getting some Engineering professors (who have had VERY impressive careers) to join their faculty at a salary of $1 per year. There was one year when half of the professors that joined them all took the $1 per year salaries. Professors take that deal because they want access to Stanford students and the venture capital firms nearby to start companies. Plus, those people tend to be multi-millionaires already from past companies they started so they are happy to take no salary to become a Stanford professor.
The ASUH– undergrad student association did pass a mandatory $20 assessment on every undergrad to cover a discount on a bus pass whether you bus to school or not.
If the right students are elected, I believe they will pass an activities fee and include athletics in that. Get all athletes and the band and as many other groups as possible to support a slate of candidates for the fee. Voter participation is low, so a concerted effort could get the activity fee passed and it would cover UH athletics as well..

Jennifer Hamilton only played against HPU in the exhibition opening night for the Wahine.
She still attended several games in support of her friends/teammates afterwards but wasn’t dressed.
I thought it was an injury but not the case.
Guess with Ayabe being brought in it limited her playing time. Not sure if she was a schollie player and yes she would have helped now after Ayabe and Kuehu suffered their season-ending injuries.

Am I confused, I didn’t think they need the student to approve of anything to set a activity fee? UH is not a sports college per-say so to think the students would vote for it is dreaming, that is unless you stack the deck like what Manoa said.
But then again just pass the dang thing (athletic fee not activity fee) and quit screwing around. 100.00 a semester with it all going to the athletic department, when moneys tight upper campus doesn’t care about the lower campus except what it can get from them. Well that’s a two way street.
I went to hear Donovan at the Quarterback Club today. Someone asked what happened to the athletic fee that they used to have 20 years ago. Donovan said it was converted into a student-activity fee that benefits the maintenance of Hemenway Hall.
He also said the new plan is to replace the thrice-proposed (and thrice-rejected) student athletic fee with a wider-rangng student activity fee that would include concerts and other UH-related events.
That should help the passage; on the down side, I imagine it would dilute the money that goes to athletics.

Resident, living with parents – $13095
Resident, living in dorm – $18457
Non-resident, living in dorm – $30505 (using same $200 transportation cost)
all include “Fees” of $399.
…do the math on the percentage of increase with a $499 figure for Fees. 😕

Former UH basketball coach Riley Wallace would. Having him on the WB show would be something I’d be eager to watch. In one interview one could learn a lot from the former coach about the current state of affairs revolving around Coach Nash’s teams over the past three years. But my burning question to Coach Wallace would be this: What effect would Alika Smith have had on the team had Coach Nash retained him? The effect of Alika coaching the guards? On recruiting? Of instilling some pride and spirit onto the team? The thing I remember about Coach Wallace is that he’s a straight shooter and getting his perspective and input of the direction the MBB is taking would be interesting. And it would curb a lot of fan’s curiosity.

BTW, already get 12% increase in tuition planned for next year. Would an additional $100 really impact students’ decision to enroll/continue at UH?

1. Free Throws – the Lahainaluna guard Maiki Viela made 16 out of 18 against Punahou last week. That’s a lot better than the UH Rainbow Warriors wouldn’t you say? Making free throws ain’t that difficult. I can make 70% and I’m not that good. The Cal Poly guy made 16 out of 16.
The key is bending the knees and shoot in rhythm and have a set routine.
Example, see what Richard Hamilton from the Detroit Pistons does. He does the same thing everytime. Also, Arenas, Nash, Billips and Ray Allen. They do the same thing over and over again, like it’s automatic. If you shoot way over your head w/ a stiff leg they’ll never make it. That’s why Shag is not a good foul shooter. The ball should always be w/ a slight arch and the shooter should be looking at the front of the rim. Flemings free throws are too much of a line drive. Suggest Artie Wilson
give them some lessons!
2. I don’t understand why the Warriors have to go to Vegas in-between Army and Colorado. The most sensible thing to do is fly direct to Denver and get acclimated to the altitude over there. I’m sure they can get practice fields no problem and the hotels in Denver would be free from Vegas-like distractions.
3. UH Rainbows problems – pitchers not throwing strikes consistently and costly errors. I also notice the pitchers take too long to pitch, thus extending the ending. I prefer the pitchers work quickly and be more agressive. The quicker you work the quicker you get out of the inning and don’t let the opponent settle in. There was one pitcher last year for another team, I think UC Irvine, who worked so fast I was tremendously impressed. And it added to a game ending in a little over 2 hours.
4. Rainbow Wahine softball – I am really impressed w/ the team’s power.
Good 1, 2 pitchers in Ricketts and Parnaby. This team has the potential to go very far in the NCAAs this year.
5. Retiring numbers – only Colt Brennan’s # should be retired. While Timmy set the NCAA passing yds. record in a career, he also has the dubious record of throwing the most interceptions in a career. Chang also did not have good performances on the road, with the exception of one game in Fresno St. Anyway, that’s my opinion.

Oregon made the top 25 in baseball poll. Only their second year fielding a team. Good test for UH, another ranked team that is only in its second class of recruiting, so we need to beat Oregon and convincingly win the series , and no excuses Trap. Protect the Aina, its our turf.
And we would have had a louder cheering section if a few Tsaikos drank less on Saturday night and came to the game.

Actually, Tsai-kos generally do not drink much. There are a few notable exceptions, but of those I’ve met, that number is less than 5.

A WOMAN’S breast implants have saved her life after she was caught in the line of fire and shot at point-blank range with a semi-automatic assault rifle.
The Sun reports Lydia Carranza’s silicone implants took the force of the blow and prevented bullet fragments from reaching her vital organs.
The dental receptionist was at work in Beverly Hills, Calif., when a gunman burst in and opened fire.
He first shot dead his wife before turning the gun on Carranza, who was sitting a few feet away.
Surgeon Dr. Ashkan Ghavami said: “She’s just one lucky woman.
“The bullet fragments were millimeters from her heart and her vital organs. Had she not had the implant, she might not be alive today.”
Carranza’s implants took her from a B to a D-cup.
Alleged gunman Jaime Paredes was charged with murder.
