Safety Aulola Tonga, who was on the travel roster for all but one road trip last year, said there is a possibility he might delay plans to go on a church mission. His plans called for starting a two-year mission this summer.
The Warriors believe Tonga has the frame to play anywhere from safety to defensive end.

Sure, we’ve heard the whispered scenarios. But by law, the vacancy for the director of player personnel is open to all qualified applicants and does not necessarily have to go to a staff member. (In fact, twice when UH tried a similar type of move — in 2001 and 2007 — the jobs went to people who were not the expected leading candidates.)
Because the job entails mostly recruiting, how about these as candidates:
• Dick Tomey. He knows Hawaii. Heck, he lives in Hawaii. And he knows how to recruit.
• Sam Papalii. When he was a competing recruiter, Papalii was referred to as “Darth Vader” because of his aggressive tactics. Papalii is great at evaluating talent and, most of all, he usually gets his man.
• Jackson Wheeler. Isn’t he a basketball associate coach? Sure. But he knows talent. He brought Ikaika Alama-Francis to the UH campus. He has contacts across the country. He knows how to recruit. And, most of all, he knows how to get on recruits to do the work necessary to become eligible. I can’t name one of his recruits who didn’t make it into school, and this is a guy who recruits JCs and internationally.
• Doris Sullivan. Face it. She’s already doing the job. For 500 schools.

It is disturbing that the UH athletic department’s accumulated deficit — think of it as a charge card bill — is approaching eight figures.
What to do … what to do …
Since the Regents won’t consider student fees until the chancellor makes a proposal, and she’s not making a proposal, then let’s figure out some money-making ideas. How about this:
• Hold a big concert in the Stan Sheriff Center, with proceeds going to the athletic department. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We’ve heard rumblings that UH isn’t supposed to compete against the Blaisdell. But there already have been concerts held in SSC — Christina Aguilera, New Hope — and, besides, this is an election year. Think Mufi is going to sue?
• June Jones didn’t lobby to change the UH nickname and logo because he didn’t like rainbows. He ushered the change because he wanted UH to sell more T-shirts. The H logo was brilliant, and the accompanying on-field success made it profitable. Only UH screwed up the rights fee. So JJ came back with the eo na toa line, which would sell more T-shirts, only this time the profits would go to the athletic department. He tried to give the rights to the previous AD, but when nothing was done, JJ just did the marketing on his own. So let’s steal JJ’s plan. Rebranding means more T-shirt sales. This time, let’s hold a contest. The student who designs the best Warrior logo gets free tuition. The athletic department then can keep the copyrights to the design, and sell their own T-shirts. Might as well use that Asian market that’s always being discussed.
• Want a cut of the concessions? Do what clubs and teams do: Work the concession. OK, the profits aren’t very big. But after three years of work, my daughters’ class was able to pay for the senior class trip. And it would be kind of nice to see Donovan, Clapp and McNamara making the garlic fries.

Just read the article on the budget, isn’t it kind of odd that in 2001 we where in the black to the tune of 2,169,204. The very year that the fumbler was hired we then went in the red for 296,719, then every year after went deeper in debt, an the year he left we where in the red to the tune of 5,418,715, an the kicker is he got a bonus. He was very smart to work out the agreement of not being able to be sued. But then again can the manipulation of figures to collect that bonus be considered fraud?
As far as the coaching changes I really don’t care, I trust Mack to make the right choices to get us a winning team.

Unless something changed, the online poll on the front of the Adverstiser does NOT list “student fees” as a solution to the athletic department deficit.
Only boneheaded suggestions like: “cutting a sport” or “dropping athletics all together” were offered options.

I voted on the increased fundraising option as did the vast majority of others, but the most realistic solution and one that is to be guaranteed to be a consistent source of revenue is the student fees.

What about a “Save UH” concert where all the best bands can do a concert at Aloha Stadium, and an after party at SSC. That way since the stadium authority will take some money from the concert, at least all the money from the after party will go to UH. All the singers/bands/groups go to the SSC and sign autographs, take pictures, etc. UH can arrage buses from SSC to Aloha Stadium for those attending the after party, that way they don’t have to drive/park at Aloha Stadium. They can arrange limos to drive the singers/bands/groups to Aloha Stadium and back. They could arrange a DVD of the concert to sell at the Rainbowtique.

Apparently it seems that the CHANCELLOR needs to start listening to the cries of “IMPOSE THE FEE, MAKE A PROPOSAL” in addition to UHAD taking in and considering public options within the abilities and current resources of the athletic department.
OK, I’m a cynic, but I don’t get alarmed because the creditors have been paid. Now it’s a matter of paying back UH. Like I said, the accumulated deficit is a credit-card bill. Unless UH tells the athletic department: Pay us back in full right now or we’re shutting down your program, I imagine you can keep the balance going for a long time.
The country is, like, a trillion in debt. It’s not like we’re selling off Yosemite to pay off the lenders.

I, personally, hold a grudge against Dick tomey when he refused to list Hawaii in his balloting during the 2007 season – don’t know why as UH represented the WAC for which he was a part of.

Recuriting all of Asia:
Perhpas using the late Father Bray’s philosophy would help – small Asian student, go to baseball or track – large polynesian, go football.
Thus, recruiting should be centered to baseball, basket ball, volley ball, golf, tennis, swimming/diving, and defensive back/wide receiver.
And, never pass up the talented, skilled, “honors” student, large Asian male for LB, OL, or DL.
Many see the “English language barrier” as the primary factor in “qualifying” them for UH – heck, is that’s the problem, start an English language class in the Far East using all students who want to participate – is there not a current program in Japan for this? forgot what it’s called.
Just supplement it with “wholesale” instructors. Many other business benefits besides sports.
ahouse…if i am not mistaken. japan’s high schools make it mandatory to have a course in english language as part of their curriculum.
and many of the chinese institutions are promoting that same effort.

japan would frown upon a collegiate baseball athlete who opted to go outside of japan to play in a foreign college baseball program. that would also put a huge damper on his future aspirations in the japanese pro game.
les murakami did more to bridge the asian market back in the day. he would routinely schedule a japanese university for both exhibition series as well as the rainbow tournament.

A couple of years ago, I saw a PBS documentary about youth and young adult Japanese baseball. I was seriously impressed with how they approach the sport. No wonder The Majors recruit in Japan. I’ll try to track it down and see if it is available on DVD or watchable on the PBS website.
I like the idea of a concert at the Stan Sheriff Center. How about some sort of carnival outside with the various teams running the booths? Maybe not a full-on EK Fernandez carnival, but at least with food and a dunking booth, hit-a-mole booth, etc.

It would also be very helpful if you contact your state legislator in both the Senate and the House and ask her or him to get involved in this as well. Once the resolutions are introduced urging the Regents to work with the Chancellor to establish a student activity fee, I’ll post the relevant information about submitting testimony.
Trust me on this one – if no one from the “general public” speaks up, nothing will happen. Posting comments here on the blog does not count. Only phone calls, written testimony, and testifying at public hearings do.

This is my suggestion to rasie “real ongoing dollars”
Charge student fees. I know they don’t want to do it but there is a way.
The athletes and their smal but loyal band of follower students will do concerts and rallys. At these rallys there will be folks either like minded students or the athletes themselves who will put themselves up to run for the UH senate. get enough folks to take over the majority for the current eggheads who just go to school, have no spirit and only want things their way (Even cut down that big old tree that got history for some new facility for student services).
Okay, so they all vote for each other, get others to vote for them and now dominate teh UH Senate. Then go tell Hinshaw we want to institute student fees.
This is an ongoing income stream. If they have, a fiscally sound business plan, augmented by smart fund raising activity and winning programs, they can have abetter shot at staying afloat. Fund raising alone will not do it. We don’t have the kind of base that will generate a couple of million or more annually. BUT, if there are student fees in place as the majority of universities have in place, it more realistic to say they can get and stay in the black.
That other thing about Asia. I think it’s a terrific idea and I have another one that would incorporate that thought.

Yes, Japan has the English requirement in all high schools, but nearly all the teachers are Japanese and the American standard pronounciations are terrible – that’s why they have American students who sign up for a 3-year appointments with the possibility of extension – no requirement to have a teaching degree – only that the person is well versed in the English language (primarily being able to pronounce the words correctly)
our nephew in California went over for 5 years and all of his group was sent to “rural” Japan to give students the opportunity to learn correctly.
this could be a “boon” for Hawaii if UH and the State really wants to make in-roads into Japan and the rest of Asia
as for “Dick”, it don’t matter as he had the entire season to place Hawaii in the top 25 and NADA, NADA!!! – only the last action counts – just like going to a up-scale restaurant, the dessert is served last because they want customers to leave with a favorable impression (if it is WONDERFUL)

pomai…for an aspiring baseball player from japan to go from uh to the minor leagues to the major leagues….well, the odds would be totally stacked against him.
foreign land, food, language, custome and culture, etc. remain obstacles.
whereas, if they starred in the japan collegiate leagues they have a direct and nearly automatic pipeline to the japan pro leagues.
these days, every major league organization has scouts in japan for the expressed purpose of landing the next ichiro, matsui, okajima, et al. currently, there are 15 major leaguers who hail from the land of the rising sun all of whom went via the japan pro leagues through college in japan.
the boston red sox have three pitchers from japan. no coincidence here, the area/signing scout is wally komatsubara who primarily covers hawaii with reaches to the orient as well.
coming out of high school, i figured that aulola tonga would outgrow his defensive back profile. i thought he would eventually become a fine linebacker as long as he kept his speed and great agility.
Re-Coach Mack’s hiring process
Let me get this straight. There’s an application process, but the hope is that in preserving the current coaching staff nobody from the outside gets hired. Otherwise if a new face comes in that would spell the end of the line for one of the current coaches. But since the head coach has intimated that none of the current coaches are leaving,and since they’ve reached their cap of the number of coaches they can hire, then they the likeliness of someone from the outside being hired is nil.
Just by going on what’s been said and leaked to the media by unnamed sources is the above statement that I wrote seem ingenious?
Furthermore if a person applying for the open position looks at media reports of Coach Lumpkin moving to director of player personal. And the current director, Tuioti, moving to DL coach then wouldn’t that be suggestive that the application process is prejudiced, especially when you add in the fact that the head coach has conveyed that none of his current coaches are leaving.
And for an outsider thinking about applying for this position don’t be fooled into thinking this an equal opportunity. Because the head has already cherry picked whom he wants to be shuffled within his staff.
I wonder if the mormons in Hawaii are allowed to serve their two year mission in Hawaii. Can’t play ball but in the evenings when time permits, they can use the weight room and watch video to learn the system.

the early media hype by some and not all media types have never quoted the head coach, his superiors, or any of the current staff. those reporters have only alluded that they hear this from folks close to the program and nothing more.

unfortunately, there are reporters in the business who like to be the first to publish a “scoop”. some have in the past in doing so ended with egg in their face.

I don’t think anyone mentioned that it, cherry picking, doesn’t happen elsewhere. What is being said is that the process is flawed, if UH wants to represent itself as in equal opportunity employer. Why have a process of advertising a position, be it for a coach, a faculty member, staffing, etc. then during the wait period the hiring department sends out suttle messages that we got who we want so don’t bother to apply because we are just going through the motions of employment to comply as an equal opportunity employer.
as I posted earlier, timing and perception is everything, Mac should have kept his mouth shut, waited for the paper work to be complete, the time line met, then announce who got the positions. No questions asked. Why, the process was tendered and followed law or procedure, and it is his prerogertive to pick from the applicants. Due process, isn’t that what it’s called. Timing and perception Mac, timing and perception, not very transparent, but very apparent that it’s already fixed.

I received a message from Tom Mui last night. At the time he was two days out from Singapore on the Azamara Quest (used to be a Renaissance line ship). Said the 700 passengers and crew is great.

Al the positions are advertised. No one is leaving. UH is maxed out in total assistant coaches. He is reassigning position coaches. So why are the new applicants applying, those who currently are not on staff, there are no positions available, we gave the same people who will be in different job descriptions.

But like in a large office– the news of changes is hard to contain because whoever is affected might tell others their fortune/misfortune. They might be overheard. The more people affected, the greater the chance of “leak” as friends tell their friends. We probably saw that yesterday.

UH needs to implement a student activities fee that allows students to get into games free. I believe NAU uses the $25 per semester activity fee to both support the Recreation Center that all students have access to, as well as free admission to athletic events. I would love to see more students at the games. Increases the energy level.

Eh all I gotta say is,
The law is the law. Wether you have someone in mind for the job or not, you need to follow the law or else you’ll have bigger problems then just trying to fill a position.
Oh and one more thing,
Certain people really gotta relax because as ST had said yesterday whether the choices have been predetermined or not, if someone comes around that is a can’t miss then all predetermined thoughts go out the door.
All I can say is chill cause if wasn’t for this blog and other blogs we would not have known about any of this anyway.

You can call the system flawed all you like but it is different depending on who you talk to. Oh and every system is flawed so really what is the big difference. If we do not have people that are willing to fix the flaws then we really have nothing to grumble about because the grumbling will be a whole lot of hot air and hot air will get us nowhere.
The problem in not that the advertised coaching positions will be cherry picked. The problem is why doesn’t Coach Mack have the right to pick whom he wants to be his assistants without jumping though hoops. And anyway isn’t Mack going to decide who is hired? Makes no sense to put Marilyn on a football assistant coach selection committee or even have a committee at that.

I brought up Jackson’s name because I was impressed that all of his recruits — whether you like them or not — make it into school. (Not sure what happens when they get there.)
It makes it easier to plan.
Which is what I really hate about signing date being in February. That just leaves too much time for someone to not qualify. I really think signing date should be moved back to April, that way there’s a clearer feel of whether a player is a qualifier. It also will allow for a more relaxed recruiting procedure. It’s pretty difficult, I imagine, to recruit while preparing for a big game.
And by waiting until April, then it takes the emotions out of it. Offers or, worse, non-offers won’t be influenced by all-star selections.

Has alot of validity to it. Thinks will always get leaked one way or another, whether it is from the person itself or through people that where part of the conversation. Whether one keeps his/her mouth shut about things doesn’t matter because there will always be that one person who is going to open there mouth and there nothing the head person can do about it. So the best thing to do is give tidbits but keep the real specifics to yourself until you are ready to give the whole story or until you are ready to hire someone.
This is the 21st century, nothing is a secret anymore.
all govt positions, c&c, state, feds and other public agencies are mandated by their hr depts rules, regs, and by laws that any permanent job vacancy must be posted publicly.
they also should follow past practices, so if any high profile positions become available they need to be advertised in newspapers and online as it were done previously. there is no hide n seek in this respect.
whomever is hired needs to have met the minimum qualifications. the person signing off on the hire usually includes a rating of all candidates and a brief narrative as to why so and so was hired. often in high profile positions a ranked list of the top three candidates are also provided by the selection board if one exists for this announcement or from the hiring principal (mack in this case). then, the person ultimately responsible for the hire signs off in agreement or disagreement. in this case, i would imagine that donovan is that person.
sooner or later this job vacancy announcement would have hit the street before an applicant was hired. therefore, i believe that mack was proper in bringing this up publicly rather than have the appearance of hiding something which eventually would have been surfaced by some over zealous reporter looking to capture the limelight as it did happen in the broadcast media and other print media yesterday.

Mack, in this case, can choose whomever. Or at least make the recommendation.
But what he is not allowed to do is make a decision without reviewing all of the applicants.
Again, it would be naive to think he doesn’t have his preferences. But this is a state university, and fair-hiring laws require equal consideration. At least everyone has to go through the procedures.
Remember, if you get sued under anti-trust laws, the damages are tripled.
I also view this as baseball’s waiver wire format.
You advertise, and if for some reason, you don’t like how it’s turning out, you always can withdraw.
Mack isn’t bound into making any moves; he will, no doubt, but he’s not bound to it. He can say, nah nah nah, and withdraw the job postings.

i spent many a year in a govt agency environment. i had hired hundreds during that tenure. from janitors to directors the basic principal/process is the same. dot your i’s and cross your t’s, if you don’t then some person will file a grievance/law suit for non-selection.
it is what it is. one in this position must do due diligence.
in some cases, logic says you hire the guy/gal you want however, protocol dictates another choice. these are the nuances that come with the game.
take it or leave it.

Now other media entities have made proclamations about what they expect will happen. There is a strong reason to believe all of the speculation will prove to be true. Only thing is that nothing is for certain until the procedure runs its course. If not, that’s collusion, and quite unlawful.

I was just blowing off some steam. I just can’t figure why some believe hiring someone is fair everywhere else but here. Hiring someone is always is a subjective decision when you have more than one qualified candidate. The hiring process should be fair, but who is hired is subjective. I like the fact that Mack is a strong enough person to make changes when he see’s fit. This is football, feelings are sometimes going to get hurt.
one of the most intriguing 2010 recruits to me is christian “bubba” poueu-luna. recruited as a wr he played qb in hs and at safety on occasion. runs a 4.5 is 6’/175.
he runs well and tough. threw a nice ball in a run oriented offense.
we picked him up as a wr. but, don’t be surprised if ends at slotback (where our numbers are really thin after this year), running back (again poor numbers), safety (another needy area), or if we ever change our offense, at qb.

I kind of wonder why Mack didn’t make the assistant resign to. Could it be because whatever those three reliable sources are saying might not happen? Could it be that Mack may actually be looking at bringing in someone from the outside? Could it be that Mack is not going to do anything at all and just suffle responsibilities? Could it be that this whole thing is just a bunch of smoke and mirrors and everyone is making something out of nothing.
I my opinion I would say just let the process take it’s course and see where we come out cause all of this grumbling and questioning will really go nowhere because the only people that know what is going on is the coaches and the players. If one of them tell then we will know what is going on, if no one tells, then all of this talk is just speculation until Mack does his so called changes and makes his official press release. Besides that, everything else is just a bunch of hot air as they say.

As I understand it, any time there is a move from the coaching staff to a non-coaching position, it has to be advertised.
So a current coach would have to apply for the personnel director’s job. And vice versa. And that becomes a competition open to everyone.
Now Mack can reassign duties within the coaching staff without advertising so long as 1) the move doesn’t boost the total salaries for the nine assistants above the current level; 2) one of the coaches doesn’t have to move into a new pay range.

so, if some coaches here go off and retire or elsewhere for whatever reason or another. who would run the run n shoot?
surely, there are other spread formations around but none quite like ours. so i am just saying, to put it mildly, if there were an exodus of sorts amongst our coaching staff or in its entirety we would effectively be looking at saying sayonara to the run n shoot as we know it.

Hello All..thanks for the vote of confidence Stephen. Even though I already do practially every job listed on the job announcement/description, apparently I am not qualified for the job. You must have 2 years football coaching experience at h.s. or above. That line was added in after I did an informal interview the last time the job was open. There are many women doing this job across the country for conferences from the Pac10 to the small NAIA schools (no offense gentlemen but its really a job that requires a lot of organizational skills, time management and patience – and women are just better at that..Im ducking, dont throw anything!) hahahaha.
Believe me, I’d rather be doing the job for UH than 500 schools.

things i’d like to see next year…
bring back the haka on a permanent basis. do it right after coming out of the tunnel even if it means coming out five minutes early.
place the hawaii 5-0 theme elsewhere. perhaps to open the second half or sometime in the fourth quarter.
prior to coming out of the tunnel have the conch shells blaring. do the chanting intro music thing. (then haka)
permanent desired attire for every game. for me black works best. everybody got black.
and of course, the team should always be in the black with green uniforms that made us look so menacing and most attractive to fans across the state and nation.

That’s how we use to see all the football and basketball games.
And we use to line up at Hemingway Hall (some from night before) to get tickets for Fab-5 days. You could also go to theater and concert on campus and Kennedy Center but we’ve never used it for that.
By charging $100 per student fee UH athletic department’s accumulated deficit will go away Very Quickly!
I also like (ST) idea of Concession worked by Donovan, Clapp and McNamara making the garlic fries. I will definetly line up and by more fries. I can just see the long lines forming only at their stand…

Up here we do a “Take-Over” of a local restaurant to help raise funds for the kids. For instance, at the local Chez Ronald’s the parents/teachers will go in to help raise cash for the school related organization. They do all the jobs with some assistance from a skeleton-crew of the regular/managerial workers. The profits Chez Ronald’s would have made during that, say four hour take-over, goes directly to the organization.
SkillsUSA made over $4000 in a couple of take-overs a bunch of years ago. Can you imagine if the coaches and “stars” from each sport showed up at the local eateries? WOW!
So what’s wrong with the team taking the field to deafening cheers of 49,000 Warrior fans that drown out the sound any band or PA could possibly make while intimidating the sweet bejesus outta a 1000 or so visiting fans?

Like I said, last time I had the qualifications until the job description was changed to add 2 years of football coaching experience then I was no longer qualified. 7. Students were NOT charged admission last year for MVB. It DIDN’T make a difference. They didn’t show up. Need more marketing on upper campus.
8. AD needs bigger cuts of the pie from concessions & merchandising.
9. General admission for all sports except football & mbb., i.e. no premium seating.
10. More butts in the seats means more cars in the parking garage, which means the garage gets paid off faster. After it’s paid off, AD gets all parking revenue from sporting events. (I know about 20 years down the road)
11. More non-UH revenue producing events in the SSC. PLEASE!!!

You know what I don’t understand is that Doris puts more kids from Hawaii into college than anyone else, yet she can’t seem to get funding that she an her organization deserves. Tell who else has gotten more local kids in school than her???

I will tell you why Pomai. Because when the grant or funding request says that the target group is athletes, I get a big fat no. As I always say if it were 100 ballerinas or 100 musicians or artists, I’d have no problem getting funding. Everyone seems to belive that all athletes go to college free. Locally, it doesnt help that I’m a woman. Honestly – one company manager told a friend of mine who is a basketball coach trying to help me raise money said the guy said “shes a woman, what does she know about sports”. In this day and age???? ugh.
But we are having a golf tourney in May if anyone wants to help. http://www.pacificathleticalliance.com all the info is there. Bingo! I told that to John McNamara in an e-mail once. He responded that they already advertise student tickets in the school newspaper, in the Advertiser and Star-Bulletin, on television and on the radio. And I just rolled my eyes that he (1) wasn’t willing to send out an e-mail to the entire student population (like those that get sent out for school concerts and other activities), and (2) didn’t get that kids get news in different ways now. Sadly, it is a pretty common thing for job descriptions to be written to purposely exclude other candidates. It is unusual that they would revise the requirements after having an informal talk with you last time…but people craft job listings to be for a specific person all the time. The government does this all the time with their proposal solicitations also.
This unlucky speed skater has come in *4th* in her last *15* major competitions! Never winning a medal but always being so close must be incredibly frustrating. She has one last chance next week to try to finally break through.
One the one hand, she was never worse than 4th in the world in all of those competitions…trouble is, she was never better than 4th either.

Getting baseball recruits from Japan is quite unlikely for the reasons that Al pointed out. However, there is one other MAJOR problem that hasn’t been mentioned…baseball players get either NO scholarship or just a portion of a scholarship. That means that a player from Japan would have to put out a lot of money to play for UH, or he could go to a Japanese college for free and go straight to their pro leagues after college.
There is a big difference between trying to get players from Japan with a scholarship offer and trying to get them to pay their own way to go to UH.

Pitiful thing is a lot of this falls on previous AD and past and current BOR individuals that follow the status quo of State procedures of “react” instead of “proact”.
At less than 40.00 FSU is still able to generate decent revenue every year.
Bleeding has got to stop and cutting ANY sport is horrible as JD mentioned.
For me, I’d look at raising the ticket price for baseball. I played with the numbers last year when attendance spiked and basically at the current cost of the baseball tix UH would have to legitimately sell out ALL home games to either break even or make some sort of profit and that includes wiping out ALL types of comp tickets, unless they are comp to corporate sponsors in which their contributions offset the loss in ticket revenue for their allotment of tickets.
I haven’t calculated the #s but I wonder what 10.00 for lower level seats would do and what 8.00 for upper would do. Heck I’d pay the extra kala. Still a great value for my dollar and the entertainment.

We have an extra basketball ticket for the Saturday, February 20, two-fer. The women play LaTech at 5 pm and the men play Cal Poly at 8 pm. We have season tickets for both teams which is why we’re giving them away. Protector took one of the extras. Remember, you can sit anywhere you want during the first game and can find the Tsai-ko regulars at the second game in several different locations.

Kazz: Re raising baseball ticket prices. I’m not sure that this would have much impact. First of all, many of the attendees during the day games are kids who come as part of a team activity – bump the price to $8 upper level and that could be a disincentive – especially during these tight economic times.
Jim Donovan’s theory with respect to lowered ticket prices has proven to be be quite successful. The more people who attend, the more concession stand stuff they buy. of course, it does help to have a winning team or two.
JM2375: Alas, there cannot be more non-UH revenue-producing events at the Stan Sheriff Center without going through a lot hoopdedoo. I’ve explained this before in detail, but if you really want to make a difference, then you have to attend the City Council meeting next Wednesday and speak up. The Agenda and the new version of the legislation are not yet posted on the City’s website, but as soon as they are, I’ll post it here.
Another way to really make a difference over the long run is for Tsai-kos who live in either the McCully/Mo`ili`ili or the Manoa Neighborhood Board areas to raise the issues at one of their monthly meetings.

These stats compiled this season compiled against SJSU, Northern Colorado, Idaho State, Seattle U, and Tulsa.
They defeated these opponents for a total of 34-14.
In 5 games the pitching staff is averaging an ERA of 1.73.
Our hitting must continue to thrive off the great feeling of connecting on balls pitched by a very talented pitcher from Stanford.
The concern against Smuda seems like the strikeouts she’s been recording and the amount we’ve been getting. Too many times we chased balls. In the loss to McNeese, their risers got our ladies chasing and in the Friday night loss to Stanford Chinn’s risers too had our ladies chasing, especially when Chinn got a full count you could see the high riser coming and we swung away to buy Chinn out of the hole she dug herself into.
Now, I don’t know who’s going to start on the mound. Coolen did say that Jr. Jenna Rodriguez would start some games in this tourney, but against a 5-0 team I am not too sure. Safe guess to say Ricketts will get the nod against Utah.
Steady as she goes against the Utes. This is just the first of many teams they will face in the next two weeks that will present BIG challenges. This will be the first road trip for our newbies or those on the roster last season that didn’t make the travel rosters. They’re gonna get tested very well over the next two weeks.
Defensively, whoever gets the nod at SS and at LOF will need to play better as those were the two areas of concern last weekend. I can only assume that Yoshikawa and Aguirre will get the starts considering their offensive contributions against Stanford. Aguirre was a little more reliable at LOF and Yoshikawa was pretty much on level with Iwata at SS so far, but has contributed more at bat than Iwata.

UNLV is rated higher in the MWC than Utah. There is a two hour break between games, maybe Ricketts can do both. UNLV is preseason favorite at second place, Utah at number 4.
if Utah coach wants her pitcher to work the outside and low, then Yoshikawa would be a better offensive threat to make contact. Iwata’s wide open stance which she doesn’t shift to parallel or close on the pitch will have a difficult time on any outside pitch. She remained open on all pitches and location.

QBs, WRs & RBs look good. The key question is if the O-Line can give them protection, esp. at OT. If they can give any semblance of protection, UH should score a lot more than 17. I think Coach Mack has done pretty well at shoring up the deficiencies of the DLine; looks like they’re now loaded and can withstand some of the anticipated / unexpected injuries (God forbid).
Although I’m not chugging the kool-aid yet, I’m sippin’ it , baby!!
re: the haka
I know some have proposed opening with the haka. I really prefer the haka AFTER the game as something special for the faithful who stay for the whole game. If it’s looked at as a mechanism to fire up the crowd, I’d say it’s half-way effective as it certainly fires up the fans. But, I think in most cases when they’ve done the haka before the games, they’ve lost the majority. Seems to me they expend too much emotion / emotionality (when using it before the game) and often run out of energy to finish those games. Others that have been keeping track of this can correct me if I’m wrong. Oh, almost forgot that at times, doing the haka prior to the game, it fired up some of the opponents to a frenzy & resulted in the other team crushing UH, which is the opposite effect of what we’re going for.
Even though Cal faces a $150 million budget deficit, they are still coming up with $320 million to renovate their football stadium. It is nice that their University is supporting Athletics like this…a big contrast to how UH’s Regents are concerned with a $2 million AD deficit and nobody seems to come up with the big bucks needed to fix the facilities.

The Regents to me are really a caricature of what they could be and continue to demand results & accountability without offering support, funding and constructive / creative suggestions to help alleviate the situation.

UH did not have major problems in the 2nd and 4th quarters last season. The *3rd* quarter was what killed the team in several games.
I was the one tracking the 3rd quarter scoring last year and I think UH actually outscored their opponents in the 4th quarter and possibly even the 2nd quarter.
