The Sept. 2 UH-USC game will be shown on ESPN.

Kickoff is at 5 p.m. at Aloha Stadium.

UH has commissioned a poll to find out the preferred starting time for home kickoffs. Last year, WAC games started at 5 p.m. to allow visiting teams to make the redeye flights back to the Mainland. Some fans thought the start was too early. Reporters with lousy deadlines loved the 5 p.m.

When do you think the home games should start? I’d like to hear your views although, keep in my mind, my opinion outweighs yours (when it comes to deadline issues).

  8. Kazz (blkberry_storm) February 16, 2010 1:28 am

    Davone,

At this point in your career is it best to take it one season at a time or are you also thinking about options for situations that are beyond your control like a coaching change, injuries, etc?

  9. Kazz (blkberry_storm) February 16, 2010 1:35 am

    Al,

    From top to bottom:

    Spare ribs from Sergios.

    Rizzotto with shrimp from Roys.
Cus cus (sp?). Dunno from where as I didn’t try it.

  10. Kazz February 16, 2010 2:09 am

    Davone,

When your name is mentioned, the first thing that pops into my head is your trademark work ethic. From your days here at UH to your current career at Miami, the stories about you being the first to practice and the last to leave are synonomous with your name.

With your experience, do you feel that this kind of “work horse” mentality is something that can eventually be taught or is it more of something that certain people are already instilled with at an early age or they just have “IT”?

  11. Kazz February 16, 2010 2:12 am

    Davone,

Being a former student athlete at Hawaii, what would you change about the University of Hawaii in both an academic and athletic standpoint with the way these two aspects of the school are run?

    Mahalo to Wikipedia:

Couscous (pronounced ˈkʊskʊs’ or ˈkuskus’) is a food consisting of spherical granules made by rolling and shaping moistened semolina wheat and then coating them with finely ground wheat flour. The finished granules are about one millimetre in diameter before cooking. Other variations exist and other cereals may be used, for instance, the Levantine variant, popular also in Israel, is slightly more than twice the diameter and made of hard wheat instead of semolina.[2] Traditional couscous requires considerable preparation time and is usually steamed. In many places, a more-processed, quick-cook couscous is available and is particularly valued for its short preparation time. Couscous is traditionally served under a meat or vegetable stew. It can also be eaten alone, flavored, or plain, warm or cold (e.g., mixed with tabouli), or as a side dish.

Just read Ferd’s column on Athetic Department finances as part of the larger issues facing the University System as well as the entire state.

What can we as citizens and “athletic supporters” do to help out? Let’s hear some of your thoughts.

Here’s mine – a $100 student activity fee per semester of which $50 would go to the Makai Campus and the balance for concerts, theatrical productions, and other Mauka Campus enrichment programs. Half of the Athletic Department’s allocation would go towards reducing the deficit and half would go towards underwriting current expenses.

Using the existing student base, that would generate about $3 million a year for debt reduction and current athletic expenses. UH Athletics could be debt-free within five years.

What say you? I look forward to reading your ideas.

  16. Garret February 16, 2010 4:44 am

    Davone,

It would be great to see you and RGM together on the field in Miami. What do you think RGM’s chances are to make the Dolphins this year?

  17. Garret February 16, 2010 5:12 am

I remember that there was some debate here over whether or not the SEC or Big 10 made more in TV money, with someone posting the CBS Sportsline article from 2009 that showed that in 2008 the SEC made more.

    http://new.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/12910849/expansion-would-boost-pac10-but-leave-wake-of-disruption

However, from that article the Big 10 made 102.8 million in TV revenue in 2008, and I pointed out that they made more in 2009 when they had more cable systems add them. This article published today shows that the Big 10 Network actually made nearly $250 million in TV revenue for the Big 10 in 2008. So, in a horrible year for the economy the Big 10’s TV revenue went from $102.8 million to $250 million.

    http://www.jsonline.com/sports/84357987.html

This is why the Pac-10 wants to expand and create their own TV network…and why TV market size will be taken into account by the Pac-10.

  28. anonymous February 16, 2010 6:45 am

Personally I can understand why people don’t want pictures taken of them or their property. A few of the reasons, it can spread on the internet to other forums quickly. It can lead to invading people’s privacy, raising questions, directing unneeded attention toward them and opening a can of worms (in some cases). In other words it can put them at risk. And make them vulnerable.

An example of this is Paipai’s picture of his hummer which was posted yesterday by the blog host. And subsequently has spurred debate on the WSN forums.

The essence of the debate doesn’t interests me.

But what does concern me, and I would imagine the UH athletic administrators would feel the same way, is that some pictures of athletes and or their property (cars) doesn’t insulate the person from risks of questions, privacy or security.

Put the shoe on the other foot. And think of what I’m saying is true.

  29. LizKauai (iPhone) February 16, 2010 7:01 am

28- didn’t bother me until an anonymous poster brought up the context and suggested negative connotations.

Anon- why not leave thar crap on other blogs and just be a participating Tsai-ko on this Ohana blog?

    Hi Ho!

  30. Pomai February 16, 2010 7:06 am

#28 anonymous Not questioning what your saying, but you could put a picture of Paipai standing next to a picture of Mother Teresa and it would spur debate on WSN, cause they just like that kind of board.

  31. rage777 February 16, 2010 7:17 am

    Davone,

I know you are a quiet guy, but you need to start telling the Dolphins that you need the ball more. Tell them that you should be in the wildcat formation. You were a quarterback so you can throw the ball if you have to.

  32. rage777 February 16, 2010 7:21 am

    Davone,

Can you please take the Dolphins to the Super Bowl. I haven’t watched a Super Bowl since 1984. I’ve been a Dolphins fan (because of my uncle) since I was born and I don’t watch the Super Bowl unless they are in it.

  33. madeinhawaii February 16, 2010 7:27 am

What happnens on WSN should stay on WSN.

  34. protector February 16, 2010 7:37 am

Congrats to Davone for 2 fantastic seasons in a row!

    Question:

I know you may want to keep your “cards” (options) close to your vest, but do you have any indications about the Dolphins making a bonafide offer to extend your stay in Miami, or are other teams already making overtures about where you’ll be after your final season??

  35. rage777 February 16, 2010 7:50 am

    Davone,

I know people like to compare you to Wes Welker, but I think you play more like Wayne Chrebet. I also think Chrebet was better. How do you think your style more closely relates?

  36. Da Punchbowl Kid February 16, 2010 8:00 am

UH and the State of Hawaii should pull out all the stops for that opening game on national tv. We need to show USC and the Pac 10 what it could be like with UH on their conference schedule. Be proactive- giveaways, advertising, etc. Get the Govs involved by placing a friendly wager (like the Sugarbowl peaches/pineapples thing.) Rally each and every bigwig in the State, as well as the fans, and anyone with even a remote connection to any Pac 10 administrators. Let’s get the ball rolling people! GO WARRIORS!!!

  67. SteveM February 16, 2010 9:31 am

  70. A-House February 16, 2010 9:41 am

    WassupDoc:

Last week I posted a message to Chancellor Hinshaw about instituting a $50/semester fee with the student choosing “academic” or “athletic” contribution. It would begin with the “2010 fall semester”.

  71. Jack Flash February 16, 2010 9:45 am

    #69- that’s funny
As for home game start times- i like the earlier starts. It’s easier on the kids.

  72. TerenceTwkWong February 16, 2010 9:46 am

Like the early starting time!! Too bad, but if we could start earlier, the more chances we could be on TV in primetime on the east coast. I think that could lead to more recruiting in those areas and scheduling better opponents from the east maybe the those school would be more willing to come out here.

  73. LizKauai m/ February 16, 2010 9:46 am

Whoa! What is that shaking going on???
    oh- BIG-C !!!

    😆

Davone – I realize your life stands as an example to the observant. Are there some words of practicality that you can offer to our current Warriors about “keys to success” ?

  74. A-House February 16, 2010 9:47 am

Although the 5pm start time “crunches” my morning schedule, I prefer this as it allows us more time after the game to complete tasks and go sleep earlier.

Just like the Army, be flexible to change, after change, after change – used to bug the crap out of me – why can’t people in charge do all their data collection, do their anaylsis, and select the best course of action to minimize change after change after change.

Only time where change is truly necessary is under combat conditions there are so many tthings that can influence your actions/decisions – thing over which you have no control, but must adjust.

  75. Pomai February 16, 2010 9:48 am

A-House I am ok with what your saying up to the point of giving them a choice, never ever give a teenager a choice. LOL

All to the athletic dept. then maybe more would attend game to get their moneys worth.

  76. A-House February 16, 2010 9:49 am

    Davone:

It is said that you were very much involved with the “jug machine” and this may have improved your ability to make spectecular receptions.

Some current Warriors say the “jug machine” is not helpful. Why the difference?

  77. Pomai February 16, 2010 9:50 am

A-House wot you mean “complete tasks and go sleep earlier” it gives us more time for eat and talk story.

  79. d1島 February 16, 2010 9:54 am

I liked the earlier start time for pretty much the same reason as others who liked that it means the game ends earlier.

Another thing is that the 5pm start ensures that the game shows up on ESPN’s schedule as a Saturday game during September and October (due to daylight savings time). Otherwise, it may give those on the mainland with bias against UH another silly reason to point out how Hawaii “doesn’t belong.”

I like the 5 PM start. That’s just enough time for Koakane to get to his seat and then fall asleep. He falls asleep at about 6 PM. So a start later than 6 PM, and Koakane will fall asleep at the bungalow instead.

  84. koakane February 16, 2010 10:03 am

    morning to tsaiko country

good day to Davone and congrats on making it into the pro ranks

like the idea of collecting fees like doc and ahouse suggest. but up it to 100 with 50 going to the facilities budget and 50 to the athletic fees.

in so far as the start up times for warrior games vs WAC teams I am ok with it but keep the games to saturday. as for other opponents keep it at 7pm.

  85. koakane February 16, 2010 10:06 am

and that was nine years ago

  99. Pride. February 16, 2010 10:21 am

    Davonne,

You’ve had two years in the league now. As a student of June Jones’ offense, how prepared were you mentally for the NFL game compared to the other rookie WR’s that you have seen. In terms of technique, and being able to read defenses, were you more prepared? less so, or about the same as other rookies?

  100. rasu begasu February 16, 2010 10:24 am

Davone, any chance you and RGM could be traded a few miles north?
You know like maybe Washington D.C.?

  101. al February 16, 2010 10:26 am

st….the younger folks usually mean it as a possesive noun when mentioning so and so’s “ride”. i.e. that would be his car.

no worry its probably a generation gap mixup.

  102. Pride. February 16, 2010 10:26 am

    Davonne,

By the way, I apologize if you have answered these questions before on the Warrior Beat.

Waht was the most difficult aspect of the NFL to adjust to? The speed? The size of the players? The size of the playbook? The array of different offensive formations? The difficulty in being able to read defenses? The techniques? The talent of the DB’s? or maybe something else?

  103. rasu begasu February 16, 2010 10:27 am

    Real Question,
Do you think it would have helped you and RGM in the draft if you stayed another year?
Or did you think it would have been a no win situation without Colt?

I was reading a column on ESPN and saw this article. It’s about how Andrew Bogut bought 100 level lower seats for Bucks games, then had people audition for the free seats. Maybe this is what UH should be doing for all our games. Have a tryout for the loudest, best fans and give them free seats to our basketball, volleyball, football games.

    Davone,
Would you like to comment on the role that our great leader and blog host has had in your success?

  131. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc February 16, 2010 11:03 am

As an environmentalist whose day job focuses on getting the US off fossil fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions & to keep our young adults from having to fight wars over oil who was broadsided by a speeding Hummer on Hamakua Drive while driving a beautifully-restored 1970 VW, quite frankly that picture really, really disturbs me. Even if it is not his car, he is still riding around in it.

A well-tuned Hummer ranges between 10 & 15 miles per gallon depending upon the model, the distance, the traffic flow, and the driver. Here in Hawai`i, the lower figure is more likely because of the short distances we drive.

Yes, we still can make choices as to what we drive, but that is a choice I would have never expected from someone who’s at the University of Hawai`i.

About the only good thing that came out of that accident was finding the Warrior Beat blog during my recovery period.

If objecting to someone’s car choice makes me a troll, then so be it.

With respect to the student activity fee, the only way it will pass out is if all activities – not just athletics – are covered. The assumption is that free admission to Stan Sheriff Center and Murakami Stadium will be buttressed by parking fees for students living off-campus and concession sales.

With respect to Aloha Stadium admissions, the fee would have to be worked out with the Stadium Authority, but something like $5 per ticket with ID should be enough to cover basic costs.

  132. Jack Flash February 16, 2010 11:04 am

    Davone Bess-
In your own words, what do you think went wrong against Georgia at the Sugarbowl? Colt had a bad day, team was outcoached, unprepared for the speed end rush, etc?

  133. anonymous February 16, 2010 11:07 am

So let me get this straight. The blog host purposely gets cute with his captions so that they have hidden meanings. How I see it this is immature. Especially now the blog host writes the fact that the hummer isn’t paipai’s. Why does he do this? The facts remain the genesis of the hummer is linked to paipai and I would think it is an invasion of privacy to paipai (or the family or to whoever owns the car) if he didn’t okay the picture of the hummer in the blog.

It’s craziness of pictures like this, and the craziness of photographers as to why coaches ban spectators, journalist and photographers from practice. If you can tell me that JD is happy with this type of picture then I’ll eat my words.

  134. Da Punchbowl Kid February 16, 2010 11:07 am

perusing the list of super games.

glad to see that 108 or so are in the house already.

for some reason, i have this feeling that london sapolu will be making an impact this coming year. we have had virtually no publicity about him and he has quietly slipped in the back door. i like that.

he’s a swing player. he could contribute on both sides. i thought i heard that he will be given a shot at center first.

  184. al February 16, 2010 12:35 pm

    game start time…

i like the new 5 pm start time.
in fact, i have been a long time proponent and advocate for even earlier start times. here’s why.

3 pm more opportunities for natl tv audiences on the east coast.
make use of the hot hawaiian sun as a gametime advantage

    Davone . . .

Sorry, one too many n’s last time!

If you could give a two-minute talk to the Warriors tomorrow what would you say?

  186. wafan February 16, 2010 12:37 pm

Hopefully there is a nice sized live audience today! Better still, I hope the audience is given some air-time!!!

  187. al February 16, 2010 12:38 pm

i can see that the early start times has made travel to hawaii by opponents and there entourage a much more economically feasible thing where it may be less of an issue in scheduling.

although, the big programs will just charter a flight anyway.

  188. A-House February 16, 2010 12:41 pm

    wafan:

keep on dreaming as it will not happen as long as Benson is the “head” and I do not mean boss!!

    al:

now, UH has 2 rather large athletes who ran for their respective 4×100 relay teams – I hope Coach Mack and his staff keep this in mind as they chart out the careers of their players.

  189. LizKauai m/ February 16, 2010 12:45 pm

Davone- what do you miss most about Hawaii when you are on the mainland?

  190. LizKauai m/ February 16, 2010 12:46 pm

Wow- Coach Mack is on the video link!

W-Doc, is this what you’re saying?
    1. We are fighting bloody wars because of oil
    2. You were badly injured in an accident with a Hummer
    3. If one rides in a vehicle, one is environmentally responsible for it
    4. Someone associated with the university should not drive a Hummer because it’s not fuel efficient.
I recognize and applaud your commitment and relentless work in a very, very tough field…but I wish you would reconsider what you wrote. My reactions were #1 (simplistic, there’s more primary stuff there); #2 (it could have been any other kind of vehicle, more reasonable to hold the person responsible than the vehicle, dontcha think?); #3 that’s a tough sell…kinda like saying, if you visit someone’s house, you’re environmentally responsible for it; #4 implies that everyone at a university should have the same values and mindset…is that the goal of a university?
I understand the emotional impact for you, and I sympathize ((hug)) Please take a deep breath and make it another great day!

  192. BG February 16, 2010 12:56 pm

    Davone

Would you please drop an anonymous note to Parcells to trade for #5 of the Redskins? Make it anonymous so the QB’s don’t get huhu with you.

    djmitcho and rasu begasu,

We love you even though the Princess pretends not to know you or how to say your names!

rasu begasu might need some explaining–well, the name, anyway… 🙄 Those not familiar with Japanese syllables should note that there is no “L” or “V”.

Closest sound to the “La” is the “Ra” (pronounched “rah”) and the “Ve” is “be” (pronounced “bay”). The “U” in “su” is silent. SO…

    ra-su be-ga-su
    Rah-ss Bay gah-ss = las vegas

Just a sick story of a Ft. Lewis soldier who water-boarded his daughter in the kitchen sink.

She is 4-years old and is now with her maternal grandmother who reports the girl is covered with bruises.

    The reason for the torture?

She did not want to recite her alphabets.

Please pray for her and her dad. Surely, they both can use it.

It was definitely enjoyable being in the Green Room at the SSC for Davone’s interview. He’s an outstanding young man. Great role model for the team in his work ethic. Da Bess!

  227. Slugger February 16, 2010 4:01 pm

    wafan,

I saw the Tut exhibit last month at the deYoung Museum in SF. Most of the pieces were from the tombs of his family, including grandparents, father Ahkenaten, possible mother Kiya, in-laws, and two daughters who never made it to full term. I saw the original Tutankhamun exhibit at the deYoung in 1979 which included his sarcophagus. Now, you’ll have to go to Egypt to see the majority of the pieces that were in his tomb.

    Back to football…

    Kazz . . .

That was my initial reaction, too. But, I wonder if he has PTSD. I have some friends who do suffer from it and the weirdest and littlest things set them off.

  231. KonaGold February 16, 2010 5:39 pm

…regarding Paipai’s “ride”; he was not “offended” by it, in fact he and his girlfriend were laughing about it when I showed it to them, because the said they were trying to keep a low profile. And, the hummer is NOT his, it is waaaaay out of his league, only in his dreams. LOL

  234. A-House February 16, 2010 6:39 pm

    PTSD:

is an unfortunate circumstance that our “ground troops” may return with and unless treated quickly may result in years of unhappiness for those all around them.

it’s a sad reflection of what combat can do to a person and it, I’m sure, affects many from all wars/conflicts – perhaps we are more conscious of it today because of Iraq and Afgahnistan as we see it on TV and in our personal relationships with those who have this condition.

met a young man who was a Vietnam vet and he would wisper so others can not hear him talking about his friends KIA and what he witnessed in Nam – kept calling for his friends and telling them to watch out for traps and cry out when he envisions them being killed. he cries all the time.

many others prefer to remain silent so they can take all their combat memories to their grave.
    sad, very sad.

Either on the farm or partying for Mardi Gras. Congratulations al, on winning the hat…super!

ST – initially, I didn’t like the 5 p.m. start for “industry reasons,” thinking the visitors wanted to skip out of staying on our island. But it is pretty good to be done early, especially on a Saturday evening. However, the 5 p.m. start on say, Thursday, September 2nd is hard for working folk. Of course we will always make time for our Warriors.

    Okay, I’ll bite – what’s Farm Town?

Bulla – saw your quotes in one of the homeless stories. Seems to me that you have two hats to wear on these complex issues. Is your church involved in providing even basic outreach services?

A bill is being introduced at the City Council to set aside a couple of areas for the homeless to set up their tents. Showers, latrines & something akin to a field kitchen and eating areas will be installed and maybe even a couple of shipping containers for storage will be brought in. Until or unless the cost of real housing touches reality, then I’m not sure if anything else can be done.
    .
BASEBALL HAS ALREADY BEGUN. Drop by Murakami Stadium for a great time Friday night/Saturday & Sunday afternoons/Monday night.

  272. wafan February 17, 2010 4:03 am

    Hi, Pomai!

    Summer. So far away. HA!

  273. Garret February 17, 2010 4:35 am

Interesting study conducted on Georgia’s recruits over a 5 year period (2004-2008) found that recruiting star ratings generally corresponded with their performance on the field for their team.

Of the five 5-star guys Georgia has landed, only Richard Samuel has turned out to be below average, and he obviously has some time to turn that around still, and he probably isn’t to blame for being misused in the first place.

On the other hand, those 3-star guys are essentially a coin flip as to whether or not they’ll ever even see the field. And of those eight 4-star busts, four transferred and one had his career cut short by an injury.

Of the three groups we’re talking about, 80 percent of the 5-star guys turned into productive starters (and Samuel still has time), 60 percent of the 4-star guys went on to be productive starters, and only about 30 percent of the 3-star guys did.

  274. Garret February 17, 2010 4:37 am

5pm Thursday will be a tough time for some people to get to Aloha Stadium…but I hope that it is full so that the Warriors will get as much support as possible. That kickoff time was probably set by ESPN, as they need the UH game to fit the late game time slot for their opening night doubleheader.

  275. BigWave96744 February 17, 2010 4:53 am

    Mahalo for the List…

Not on the list due to injury or other reasons:
Josh Andrews, Brian Blumberg, Rodney Bradley, Kaiser Iuta, Levi Legay, Malcolm Lane, Brett Leonard, Gary Nagy, Corey Paclebar, Aaron Rink, Bronson Tiwanak, Tui Tuiasosopo

Oh and it should be spelled: Kahekili Kalalau

  276. BigWave96744 February 17, 2010 5:00 am

Oh and Dwight Armbrust, not Armbust 🙂

  277. Altagracia Zegarelli February 18, 2010 9:14 am

If you’re looking for choice sports art, with outstanding service too, Absolon Moreau’s 1 of the greatest. I ordered one of his paintings for a Christmas present for my parents (big Colts sports fans they are), and just ordered 2 more from him. Highly advocated.
