Allen-Jones seeks comeback
Cameron Allen-Jones is attempting a comeback.
Allen-Jones missed the entire 2009 season after suffering severe burns in a kitchen accident. Allen-Jones still needs NCAA clearance for the missed time.
If Allen-Jones is allowed back, he would provide a boost at defensive end. During his UH career, he also has practiced as an offensive lineman and perimeter blocker (re: tight end). There once was talk that he could be used as a big back.

With UH volleyball matches regularly exceeding Avatar-like lengths, this weekend’s exhibitions against Alberta would have provided a chance to see the impact of shorter matches. Canadian schools, such as Alberta, play by the international rules of 25-point sets. Tonight’s exhibition will be played to 30.
Canadian teams also allow its players five seasons to play. That was something the NCAA had explored. A straight five seasons would eliminate redshirt years and medical hardships. In turn, coaches would not have to debate whether to hold out freshmen in the possibility of redshirting them. It seems to be an easier system, and it would cut down on paperwork and appeals.

At last week’s volleyball match, AD Jim Donovan and Bill Hinshaw were mapping out what appeared to be athletic facility plans. This was the best I could do at being a stalkerazzi:

Fires at UH evoke very painful memories for me. It’s been 3 1/2 years since the Lab School fire and there are no plans for a new building.

I saw Ferd Lewis’ article about Jim Donovan’s call to someone in the Pac 10 to inquire about “potential opportunities” for UH. Ferd does not mention in his article that all discussions have focused on Utah and either Colorado or BYU as schools that are being looked at as potential additions to the Pac 10. I guess we have to do something if the rumors are true about Boise and certain other WAC schools exploring a move to the MWC.

ST — I have wondered something similar too, back in my early days in the service when we were taught to recognize officer collar insignia. Silver was higher than gold. For example, and O-1 has a single gold bar and a O-2 a single silver bar. A major/Lt. Cmdr is a gold oak leaf while a Lt. Col./Commander is a silver oak leaf. Never knew the rationale.

Did you see the rule proposal about excessive celebrations? If a player starts styling at the 20 en route to the end zone, the ball is moved to the 22.

It’s because back in the old days, officers wore gold braid in their shoulders and the silver insignia distinguished between the higher rank.
For example, majors wore gold epaulets on both shoulders while Lt. Col. had a silver oak leave on top of the epaulet to distinguish between the two.

ST..saw the article on the new rules regarding “excessive celebration”. Would like to know if the player is about to score and he just puts the ball in the air without taunting the opposing player, would that be “excessive”? I can agree with some of the actions being “excessive” but “excessive” to one may not be to another. Some penalties the Warriors got for “unsportsman like” seem to have been “excessive” officiating to me.

A mascot SHOULD be universal. Bad enough all the men’s sports have different names with the exception of football, volleyball, and golf as they are all “Warriors”.
Beating a DEAD horse again, but I like that all the women are “Rainbow Wahine” nothing wrong with that and let’s keep that tradition going. “Warriors” should be for all the men.
Let’s get a student in a foam costume that is more current and more aggressive looking for ALL home games for basketball, football, and volleyball. A Warrior with an ikaika helmet and a spear would do just fine on the sides and in the stands rooting for the Wahine and the Warriors of all sports.

OK, all you analytical guys/gals – make a list of all the advantages and disadvantages of why PAC 10 should invite UH to join da conference and let’s see the results. No forget to calculate air fare and transfers and “time” from West Coast to Utah, Colorado, and BYU. It may be cheaper and faster to fly to Hawaii. No forget to consider Hawaii residents who are still loyal to the college they attended who will now purchase tickets to watch their team play at Aloha Stadium. or, attend to respresent the Warriors!!!

Alaska and Hawaiian would be good out of the PNW – both Washington and Oregon schools. Hawaiian lut of LA and Las Vegas and direct flights to Phoenix for Arizona and Arizona St.
Alsaka Airlines has direct flight to Maui and Kauai for parents, friends, etc who want to attend a game and vacation during same trip. Hawaiian also has connections to Kauai and Maui.
Also, Sugar Bowl showed that Hawaii fans will attend games on the mainland; yea, I know that the Sugar Bowl was speical, but I bet if UH was in the PAC 10, a lot of Hawaii fans will show up at any site to watch.
How many fans from Washington or Oregon or Arizona show up at USC or UCLA or Cal or Stanford to cheer their team? Additional income from tickets and refreshments!
Put on the thinking cap! Be creative! Think outside the box! This could result in a totally new revenue source for the State and outer islands. Oh yea, no forget Legislatvie support.

We should play an exhibition football game in Shanghai. Of course, don’t know who would pay for it.
Have friends who frequent Shanghai on business who could start tossing the idea around. Apparently Shanghai, a population of about 20 million, will soon be the new Japan. They will soon be buying, learning and soaking up Hawaiian music and everything else Hawaiian. There are parties that would like to begin bringing over Hawaiian entertainers and halaus, the same way that Japan has done over the past thirty years. The state needs to jump on the opportunities. Our biggest export in ten years will be Hawaiian music and hula to the 20 million people in Shanghai. We should have the Hawaii football program tag along and create a fan base in the area. First, we will need to introduce the game to just a few people, then start doing clinics. If we can get a few hundred thousand people to watch recordings of the games then perhaps that could go far in establishing a foothold on that television market. With that market in hand, we would then make ourselves more marketable to the PAC-10. Perhaps we could partnership with the East-West Center, Shidler Business School, UHAD, and perhaps the Warrior Football Alumni. Everyone could benefit. East-West can continue building relations, Business school can become the forerunner to info sharing between east and west commerce. Football program can gain a larger market for their sports as well as possibly establish a recruiting foothold. Football alumni can hold clinics and be ambassadors for the sport. Same can be done in New Zealand, Austrailia, Japan.
Might take awhile for football to catch on in these countries, but when it does, it’s better to be at the forefront, rather than hanging on to the tail. If football doesn’t catch on, then at least we will probably learn from the experience.
Am told that the Hawaiian music, hula stuff is a done deal though. Can you imagine, 20 million consumers, in one city?
Ok now on to the mascot — sorry Kazz IMHO all teams should be Warriors, if you go back into the history there where Wahine’s that fought alongside of the Kane’s.
Hold tryouts, with the student who wins it gets a scholarship for as long as he is the mascot, and lets not kid around with any costume get a body builder who looks the part.

This is a tourney right now. The only “set” matches are for tonight vs Texas A&M CC at 5pm and again at 7pm vs #10 Stanford. Both games on K-5 if no can come.
On Saturday the games for softball start at 10AM. Not sure where Na Wahine will play. Depends on how they do tonight. If we can knock out A&M CC and get past Stanford the Wahine will play the 12pm game on Saturday and if they win that they play at 4pm AGAIN on Saturday. This is the BEST case scenario for the Wahine.
Worst case, we lose either lose one game tonight or both and then we play at 10am tomorrow and if they lose that they play at 2pm tomorrow.
Warriors and Wahine Warriors..sound good to me…

PAC-10 is a long shot, but gotta try. If a big name wants in, UH’s chances are slim.
As far as recruiting goes, Pac-10 wouldn’t want to lose the pipeline they now enjoy. I believe Hawaii being part of Pac-10 would actually be a plus for the other Pac-10 schools.
Recruits who want to stay home will continue to do so. Those who decide to leave would look favorably on the Pac-10 schools since it would guarantee that they would play at least twice in four years at Aloha Stadium. There would be fewer recruits going to BYU, TT, Tennessee, etc.

Just read all the comments on Ferd’s article, boy there are a lot of “Glass is half empty” people out there.
It would have been nice if the Asian market had been established for UH earlier. The planning to get into Japan, Shanghai, etc., would take awhile and exhibition games are a great idea. Trouble is, the Pac-10 needs to decide which teams to invite in a year to get things ready for their next TV deal, so UH would have to everything done in less than a year. So, I do not see how the Asian market that BC talks about can be relevant at all to UH’s Pac-10 chances.

I agree with Liz, rubberman should be the mascot (or somebody like him). I remember at the volleyball games during timeouts where the players on both sides would turn around and watch him. People would go wild just to watch him dance.

Probably considered, but getting in the PAC10 would mean saving on trips to LTech, Fresno and other out of the way schools and could be offered to subsidize travel since most PAC10 schools are near to major airports where Hawaiian flies to.

A couple of years ago, we said goodbye to Jerry Burris. Speeches. Wah, wah, wah.
He comes back as a consultant/blogger, I think. Then they give him a cubicle/room stuffed with his books and other junk. Great guy and all, but dammit, that was the sports department’s potluck room.
And then they cleared him out, and moved in Wayne Harada’s, uh, accumulation.
A couple of years ago, a sort of pleasant guy named Jay Higa says he’s going to leave us. No plans, he says. Just time to go. Doesn’t even want a severance package. So in the midst of the teary farewells, I tell him: If you’re going to Brand X, we will hunt you down and harm you with this pen. Click, click. No, no, no, he assures us. No plans at all. Guess where he ends up a week later. Click, click.

Yeah, we all miss home. I do most of all since I’m actually from there. I miss surfing which is impossible to do here in Dallas. We all still root for the Warriors as well. I try to read the blog every now and then.
I don’t want to get into the whole issue I posted about in yesterday’s blog about TV revenue, but I do note that many posters want the big-budget schools to be “fair” to the non-AQ schools. I should point out that the TV networks do not care about fairness–all they care about is how many people will watch their games. Sadly, it is a fact that the many more people will watch games from the SEC, Big 12, Big 10, and Pac-10 than the MAC, Sun Belt, C-USA, WAC, and MWC. That is why the SEC gets $3 billion, the Big 10 gets *more* than the SEC, and the WAC gets $1 million.
Where do you think that the BCS bowls get their money? A *lot* of it is from TV (ABC/ESPN outbid Fox in the recent round) and if too many lesser-known schools got into BCS bowls the TV money would decrease pretty quickly…especially since all the games with non-AQ teams are in the bottom 10 in BCS bowl rating history.
The setup that Pomai and other wish for where the NCAA takes control and divides the TV money among all conferences is what used to be the setup…until the courts ruled that it was illegal. That set the conferences free to make their own TV deals, and with the crazy money being earned right now there is no parity anymore. The difference in TV money used to be 2:1 but now it is 17:1…
The BCS bowl system gave $22.5 million this year to the non-AQ conferences, *far* more than they would have gotten if they formed their own bowls and tried to get their own TV contracts. Even a normal $18 million year is far more than the non-AQ conferences could get if they formed their own bowls. That is many times more than what ALL the non-AQ conferences combined get from their TV deals for the entire regular season.
The non-AQ teams also benefit from the big TV contracts by the $1 million paydays for playing at SEC and Big 10 stadiums. That is what keeps much of the Sun Belt, MAC, and teams like SJSU and La Tech afloat. If the Big 12 and Pac-10 get big TV contracts also, then the demand will increase and the price will go up well past $1 million.
The majority of D-IA teams are in AQ conferences. If they add the MWC in the next round (and there is a provision in the BCS contract that specifically allows adding another conference), then they will have a significant majority.
UH has to make sure that it gets into a better situation in the conference shuffle, hopefully as a MWC/WAC combination after a few teams that didn’t want UH (like Utah) leave the MWC. Then the MWC/WAC combination need to win nonconference games and earn their way into AQ status. The current MWC appears to have passed the requirements to become an AQ conference in the next round…but if they are raided, then they might lose that chance.
The difference between BCS payouts for AQ conferences and non-AQ conferences is less than $2 million per team, close to $1 million. The difference in budgets between UH and the biggest budget schools is getting to be around $100 million…splitting the bowl money would do nothing for that gap.

While I don’t think Pac-10 is even a long shot I hope this is considered. With so many ex-Hawaii residents on the west coast I’m thinking attendance in all sports that include Hawaii on the west coast would increase. I think it was the UNLV coach who commented that Hawaii people are funny in that even if they are UNLV alumni and Nevada residents they will come to the game and cheer for Hawaii.

Garret let me be very clear, “I do not want the NCAA to take over the role the BCS plays” I just think that there is a better way to make things more even for all schools. Question – if we had one organization who did what the BCS does except for all schools, would they not have a better hand to negotiate with the TV guys for a better pay out for all schools?

From what I’ve been hearing lately, UH’s hidden asset for a Pac-10 bid is that it can attract the potentially lucrative Asian market.
And if the U.S. market hits the saturation point, that indeed would be attractive.
One small problem: UH doesn’t have the Asian market.
It would be one thing if UH actually has that market. Then it can tell the Pac-10: here’s what we bring to the table.
But it doesn’t, and it has no bargaining chip, and in the big picture, UCLA probably has a bigger marketing foothold in Asia
First thing’s first: UH needs to get on the ball.

ST…totally agree #111. I keep hearing about the asian market but like you say, there is no market at the present time. We have a basketballer but not on the floor currently. Only for a couple of minutes at best. We used to have a Korean baseballer (catcher) but he went back because of family obligations. The guy had some potential. He would walk in to Camelia’s McCully and the whole staff would come out to greet him. Dude must have had a lot of free dinners there.
Anyhoo, unless we have someone like a Ichiro or Yao, hard to sell American style sports to Asia. Most of them do not understand football. Agree that schools like UCLA, Stanford, Cal probably has more publicity there than Hawaii, other then a tourist destination.

I instantly liked Mai Ayabe when she first stepped onto the court. Real tough one on one defender and could take the ball down court well enough to handle a full court press.
When Kuehu went down it sucked!!! When Ayabe went down, not good either.
Unfortunately Ayabe won’t be able to claim hardship and she’ll only have next season to play as a Rainbow Wahine.
For a sec there I thought Stretch found some info saying Ayabe somehow healed her ACL and will start the next game!
I would think with the past and present connection that the State of Hawaii would be able to make a faster inroad into the Asian market. If I was Mr. Donovan I would be looking for help from the private sector to make those inroads open up. One of the first things do we have a sister school in Japan or other Asian countries? If not well do it. Also find a recruit from Japan, China or the Philippians. All kind of possibilities.

At work, I meet A LOT of Japanese and Korean nationals going to school at UH Manoa. Can’t help but pick away at their brains to see how they feel about college athletics, especially at UH. Since they are new students by the time I meet them they probably not that familiar with our programs, but for the most part it’s 50/50 with them initially.
Of course I don’t see them at the SSC, some at Rainbow baseball, and at the football games there are just too many people in general to figure out who’s who.

My only contact with Texas was in 1968 when I drove the “pan handle” on my way home from the Army and a “pit-stop” at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport.
1968 trip was interesting as we hit a locust swarm going 95mph on a 200 mile straight a way on the old Route 66.
“Pit stop” was funny as we landed around 3:30am from San Francisco to catch flight to Fort Smith, Arkansas. 15 officers from Hawaii, mostly oriental, dressed in military uniform and all the people stopped and stared at us like we were going to attack them. On the return trip, at Oklahoma City airport, I am walking to the gate and I hear this lady screaming my name from afar and immediatley recognize her voice. We had Speech 100 class at UH in 1960 and had no contact for 12 years. She is an attorney in Honolulu today.
Maybe ST can talk to his Japanese friend and find out how to get into the home country market.
A-House – if UH ever has a game at SMU and the Dallas Cowboys have a home game the next day, you have to attend the game to check out the stadium. I know it’s going to kill you to sit through the game, but the stadium is AWESOME!! But think about it, at least you will get to cheer for a winning team.

I think you could look at what the Yankees are doing to stir interest in baseball in China. I’m hearing that they are doing a lot to raise awareness and interest for a sport that is not known here either. In terms of basketball, every kid, college student, want to be like Yao Ming. Now they want to be like Le Bron, Kobe, Shaq.
If I was UH representatives, I wouldn’t be thinking unilaterally reaching out to this market because they don’t have the funds like Yanks. I would consider a consortium of teams to make a brand known. The NBA made this their approach while making Yao Ming their center-piece. They had Huston and a few other teams do play against Huston in exhibition games all across cities in China. Today the NBA’s second largest market is China.

G (China), have three friends who frequently visit Shanghai for business. Another friend just returned to Honolulu after living in Shanghai for two years, and can’t wait to return. There is a local shipping company that has terminal operations in Xiamen, Ningbo, and Shanghai. That company has five ships going into those three ports on a two week rotation, retuning to stops in L.A., Honolulu, and Guam. I have seen a lot of products originate from and around the shanghai area. There appears to be quite a bit of U.S. companies with manufacturing arms near the area. From my limited perspective, Shanghai just appears to be a natural fit for a University from Honolulu. I do realize that you would have a better perspective.
One of Hawaii’s biggest assets is what it brings to the television market.
If you strictly at the size of the population around the university, then Hawaii is small. However, if you consider that Hawaii expands the market by 3 time zones, that is a tremendous plus.
Instead of an afternoon and evening game, with Hawaii, you would have an afternoon, evening, and late evening game. You hear a lot of stories about football nuts on the East Coast staying up to watch the Warriors. Of course, Hawaii needs to be competitive.
Plus if games are ever shown in Asia, an evening game in Hawaii is early afternoon in Asia.
Didn’t Lingle travel to Asia to promote Hawaii, but she got criticized by our Democratic legislature for leaving the islands in these austere times, giving a push for tourism and opening of markets and technology.
problem with Hawaii, too much political posturing, the old boy and democratic party wants it their way or no way. But the old boy and democratic hierchy is an oligarchy, lacks inclusion of the masses and new ideas are tabled. UH and our school system are examples of our failed legislature controlled by one party with no ideas.
UH needs the business community and the legislature to back it to the fullest, especially expanding UH interest in Asia, in athletics, research, recruitment of students, technology, business, etc.
Yeah I forgot about Ningbo. Another huge city. The three cities you mentioned are big shipping ports, Xiamen the smallest of the three. Chongqing is interesting because they ship all their products through the Yangtze River to get to Shanghai. This was one of the not well known reasons why they had the three groge dam built. To build the economy from the west.
There are three provinces that knows the west, outside of Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong and that is Jiangsu, Guangdong, and Fujian Province. Fujian is interesting because you have 2 Million Fuzhou people alone living in New York alone and many folks from the province living in very developed South East Asian countries like Singapore.
I remember last year a Japanese national came to UH fb practice and baseball games but Jason was too shy to cultivate intenational relations.

If we do have a realistic shot at getting into the PAC-10, I hope they run with it. If Boise State was going to stay another 10 years in the WAC, I wouldn’t worry. However the handwriting is on the wall & Boise looks poised to leave; it’s just a matter of when. If & when they do leave, alternatives for the WAC look bleak for UH. I like that Donovan made the call, whether it bears fruit or not.

Here’s the out of the box idea for the State of Hawaii and the UH athletic department.
We will fly the teams to Hawaii at what would the the average cost the Pac 10 teams would pay each year to commute in the configuration in the West coast with the current 9 others in the Pac 10.
Reason we can do this is that we, the UH will enter into a business venture where we would lease our own airplane. To keep the cost of this arrangement to a minimum, the UH business school would assist in setting up in a business venture where we would charter the plane for Vegas trips, military lifts and the like when the plane is not scheduled to ferry the named teams (football, basketball, baseball, track) to and from the islands.
The UH could then work to sell sponsorships to help defray the cost, gas, maintenance, etc.. to sponsors. The plane could carry the logos of the companies, much like NASCAR cars. Why pay subsidies if we can provide the benefit but own (lease) the asset that may allow us opportunities to create income that may be more beneficial than simply “giving it away”.
Sounds crazy. Has anyone looked into this as a possibiloity? If travel was not an issue, could that drop what may be a Big barrier for not allowing entry into the Pac 10?
If there is a month before the Pac 10 decides as to whether they will seek 2 more teams, why not setting the table now in anticipation.

I was just on a trip with the AD and overheard him taking a call from the PennSt. AD who wanted to schedule us. He told him we were booked for awhile. Sorry Ralph but I’m gonna have to disagree with you on this one.
Linda Lingle appoints the Board of Regents and the University has autonomy. While the legislature appropriates the funds it has no direct control over UH. Let’s remember education takes up half the budget so increasing funding for UH will require funds to be taken from something else. What has irritated the legislature is that when UH asks for more money and is asked how it will be spend the legislature is told “we have autonomy so we don’t have to answer those questions”. It is a widely held belief by the legislature that UH is not spending money wisely, hence their frustration. This subject is much more complicated than this of course, but the public perception that UH is controlled by the Democrat’s while being a Republican talking point is too simplistic an argument.
Lindle Lingle often, by design, allows UH to deal with the problem on its own, so as not to be seen as the Republican’s fault.
Happened last year on a situation, matter of fact.
often the best policy is to pass of the problem to somebody else, or so it seems to the powers that be,…. and we still wonder why we don’t win, when we don’t have any Urban Meyers, or Joe Pa or yadaz at the top.

I agree we must think out of the box on this one, but leasing an airplane that will compete with Hawaiian Airlines and others will meet with stiff opposition. JD made a good first step by asking the PAC-10 what they are looking for from potential members. I do believe by the time the PAC-10 comes up with a list of what they require for new members it will be too late for UH to meet those requirements. I believe like you that UH needs to come up with what it believes those requirements will be and try to achieve them within a reasonable time frame.
Old diver, true, it may probably upset the status quo, but change does that abd if the numbers make sense, would we stop because it would upset the status quo and put ourselves back into the box, or would we change to best position the institution to find success? That is where we all expect leadership to move us forward. Change does not occur by playing it safe. Change, real change occurs when risk and discomfort occurs.
Question is do we wnat to go outside the box, or work from within…again.

Ok, sorry I didn’t make myself clear. UH leasing an airplane to compete with Hawaiian Airlines and others will be seen as government competing with private companies. While I think the numbers might work out, for the reason I mentioned I don’t see this happening.
Lots of Junior Days going on tomorrow, including Texas and SMU. Since more and more schools are having 2 Junior Days, there always will be overlapping Junior Days.
Buy the plane and lease it back to Hawaiian, and have them supply the crew.

The Pac-10 has been in MAJOR cost-cutting mode. Remember, Cal took a *bus* for their road game at UCLA.
You also have to remember that travel costs do not just include football games. You have to account for ALL the nonrevenue sports–soccer, tennis, women’s basketball, etc. Even though schools make all their money on football and men’s basketball, they still need to pay all the travel expenses for the other sports.
Due to the need for travel partners, often times one team will be traveling to UH while the other team is leaving UH after their road game. How will one plane take care of that? What happens when UH has several sports going on (like this weekend) and teams all need to fly in from different states?

Yes, there are simply too many recruits to handle on just one day. Plus, this allows for recruits to have 2 days to attend in case they have a conflict (say, a track meet or a basketball game) on one date.
Sometimes a recruit has car problems or a family emergency and misses the first Junior Day. Since recruits pay all travel expenses, if they have travel problems on one day the school cannot help them out with their travel.
Sheesh…rocket scientists sure can come up with a lot of good questions!

buffoman, great thinking. now that idea has plenty things that can be discussed. take it another way, uh absorbs 50% of the airfare and the visitor is responsible for the other 50%. to help make up the deficit, add on a surcharge to season ticket holders and premium surcharge to individual game tickets. if UH is fortunate in getting in the PAC 12, they will probably end up paying for only 4 visiting games from the conference each season in football.
Instead of the huge expense of buying or leasing a plane, UH would be better off getting a special deal with Hawaiian Airlines. One plane won’t be enough for UH and more than one plane is impossible to make the financial numbers work. However, Hawaiian might be happy to help out UH and they do fly to most Pac-10 cities.
Maybe JD’s call to the HTA was to enlist their help with a package deal for travel+hotels for visiting teams. Hawaii hotels definitely have lots of rooms available during non-peak seasons like this and they could fill some of their empty rooms at a discount and get the goodwill of helping UH…they come out ahead financially and UH gets a good deal.
Wahine handled Texas A&M CC well by pulling the Mercy Rule 9-0 and on paper hung in there with Stanford with a 2-0 loss but were really outhit 6-1.

The BIG problem for UH is that the Pac-10 uses travel partners to keep costs down. For example, a soccer team from UCLA will take a bus up to the Bay Area and play Stanford and Cal in one weekend to keep costs down. If they fly into Hawaii for a Thursday game, they cannot just stay at the same hotel and bus to their Saturday game at Colorado or whatever other school the Pac-10 adds.
Forget about travel costs for football. What UH has to worry about is travel costs for all of those nonrevenue sports.

Four home games for football is not the travel problem to worry about.
9 or 10 home games for men’s basketball, women’s basketball, soccer, softball, women’s volleyball, etc., are a much bigger issue. The even bigger issue is how they are going to play two games in one weekend when one of the games is in Hawaii and the other is in Colorado or Utah.
Baseball, golf, rowing, swimming, tennis, and other sports are also going to need to be accounted for.
American commentators need to learn to be quiet during speeches. I am sure we can understand English!

Old Diver I’m for UH autonomy, don’t need to answer to the legislature, they need to have their own vision without strings attached. It’s like tenure for the professors, job security and freedom to teach and do their research without impedment from the administration. The legislature wants to control the purse strings and wants UH to answer to them, that is not autonomy, that is control.
UH already has autonomy.
I would agree with Pride that the New Zealand and Australia markets could be quite important for PAC-10 consideration. Its a doable 10 hour flight from Sydney with both having relative booming economies and good universities. Both have historically been captured by the commonwealth circuits of news and a conception of “sport” as being primarily cricket and rugby but the Internet is changing that, especially with Matt Brier’s success in Dallas. A couple of years of booming success by Dunnachie will also help.

Your link did not work, but that article was from July 2009 so the numbers are old. In 2009, a number of sources (including SI) reported that the Big 10 earned $12 million per team from TV in 2008. I posted that number early in yesterday’s blog.
Then, I found the 2010 articles that specified that the Big 10 TV revenue increased to more than $17 million for this school year. I posted that article later in yesterday’s blog.
So, I thought just like you that the SEC ($17 million per team per year) made more than the Big 10. However, the Big 10 apparently passed the SEC in TV revenue due to having more cable companies carry their network.
One thing you have to take into account with the numbers is that the SEC splits TV revenue with 12 teams and the Big 10 splits with 11 teams.
That is more than $17 million per team this school year, not $17 million total for the Big 10.

I’m quite worried because I currently use XP and I can see that Microsoft isn’t going to try hard to keep my computer secure and keep the updates safe. If you don’t update when they tell you to, the computer isn’t safe…and if you do update you risk the chance of turning your computer into a paperweight.

That MLB Hankins looks impressive (#6 MLB in the country with offers from everywhere–Miami, Notre Dame, Cal, Nebraska, Arkansas, etc.) and players like him and the 4-star back would be huge recruits to get.

My Google News searches for University of Hawaii football are what give me a lot of Warriors-related links to post here…but lots of SMU stuff pops up also. I hope that eventually the JJ articles will stop mentioning UH.

You guys are boggling my mind with the figures you’ve stated for some of those AQ conferences. If UH had that kind of revenue, just think of where its programs would be…Keeping that perspective, UH is overachieving while many of the teams in the Big-10 and elsewhere are significantly UNDER-achieving.

Lol…I think JJ will forever be intertwined with Hawaii. We still act, dress, and pass on the values we brought from there. Early last season when we were playing UAB, June challenged a play and the referee announced on the loud speaker that HAWAII was challenging the call. Classic.

Last night Rainbow Wahine 9-0 over Texas A&M CC and Stanford over UH 2-0
I missed the first game of the DH last night, but Ralph and Pomai were there and filled me in on Kaia Parnaby’s great debut at the mound as a Rainbow Wahine. Glad the bats came alive. Granted it was a lesser opponent in Texas A&M CC, but still we should have hit very well against them and we did.
Congrats to Kelly Majam for getting that monkey off her back and nailing a homer as well. Ralph made a good point in what I suspected. Majam is really coming in “cold” sitting out for an entire year rehabbing from a torn ACL and having surgery and then really only seeing real live pitching against different pitchers only came along this weekend. She’ll find her way. She has too much talent. Her outfield play has been more than adequate. She can cover a lot of ground when needed.
Stanford had a stud of a pitcher though. Small girl but plenty “mana”. She had hints of losing her composure at times with some VERY wild pitches, however luckily for Stanford we had no one on base during those mishaps. Got out hit 6-1 as the Wahine couldn’t find the mark against this pitcher. Lots of fly balls as it seemed our batters were catching the bottom of her pitches.
Ricketts held her own very well against the #10 team in the country, but again, our batters need to support our pitching game which is already looking to be living up to what it was supposed to be.
Na Wahine find themselves the 2nd in the tourney and will have another crack at McNeese State at 10am. If we win this we play at 4pm if not, we resume play at 2pm. After that the Wahine hit the road for two tourneys in which they will face more of their share of teams like a Stanford.
This is a good test early on the newbies and the players that never made road trips last year will learn early on how to manage the road and how to deal with those challenges before WAC play begins.
