FRESNO, CALIF. >> Fresno State dominated all phases in a 50-20 rout of Hawaii tonight at Bulldog Stadium.

It was the Warriors’ third consevutive loss.

—————

Jeremy Moussa, in his UH debut, throws a 27-yard scoring pass to Devan Stubblefield with 1:43 to play.

Jeremy Moussa makes his UH debut at quarterback on the Warriors’ first drive of the fourth quarter.

* * * * *

The Bulldogs’ parlayed Cole McDonald’s interception — only the fourth he’s thrown this season — into a 16-yard scoring drive. Backup wideout Derrion Grim caps the possession with a 6-yard catch. It’s 47-13 with 8:45 to play.

* * * * *

Fresno State picks up where it left off, adding three more points on Asa Fuller’s 32-yard field goal on the opening drive of the second half. FS leads, 40-13, with 9:49 to play in the third quarter.

* * * * *

Hawaii’s nightmarish first half comes to a stunning conclusion when Fresno State’s Jamire Jordan catches a failed field=goal attempt in the end zone and sprints 100-plus yards the other way for a touchdown as time expires.

Ryan Meskell was setting up for a 53-yard field-goal attempt when the Bulldogs called timeout because they did not have enough players on defense. The Bulldogs then assigned Jordan to wait a few yards in front of the crossbars in case the FG attempt fell short. The kick was short, and Jordan went long for a 37-13 lead.

* * * * *

The Bulldogs extend their lead to 30-13 on McMaryion’s 21 scoring pass to Jordan Mims with 58 seconds left in the first half.

* * * * *

Ryan Meskell’s second field goal, this time from 28 yards, closes UH to 24-13 with4:35 left in the first half.

* * * * *

The Warriors are successful on a goal-line stand, but the Bulldogs come away with Asa Fuller’s 22-yard field goal with 8:57 to play in the first half. The Bulldogs lead 24-10.

* * * * *

Rivers runs deep — Ronnie Rivers goes 76 yards a rush through the left side for a 21-0 Fresno State lead with 14:11 in the first half.

* * * * *

And just like that, the Warriors close to 14-10 on Cole McDonald’s 50-yard scoring pass to JoJo Ward.

Slotback John Ursua broke one way, slotback Cedric Byrd broke another way, and Ward ran a go pattern.

* * * * *

After playing power ball — two- and three-tight end formations — Marcus McMaryion teamed with Jamir Jordan on a 49-yard scoring play for a 14-3 Fresno State lead.

The Bulldogs had taken over following a UH mistake. Cole McDonald gained a first down on a keeper, but the play was voided because of a false-start penalty. The Warriors were forced to put, leading to that five-play scoring drive.

* * * * *

Fresno takes a 7-3 lead on Marcus McMaryion’s 19-yard scoring pass to tight end Jared Rice. All five os McMaryion’s completions went to Rice.

* * * * *

After a 29-minute delay because of a malfunctioned bank of lights, play has resumed.

At 8:01 p.m. Pacific time, a bank of lights went out at Bulldog Stadium, forcing stoppage of the game with 5:34 left in the first quarter.

The teams went to the locker room while the lights were being repaired.

In last year’s meeting between the team, lightning forced a 41-minute delay at Aloha Stadium.

* * * * *

The Warriors open the scoring with Ryan Meskell’s 43-yard field goal.

It was only the second time this season an opponent has scored on the opening drive against Fresno State.

It’s 3-0 with 10:26 left in the first quarter.

* * * * *

Welcome to the land of the raisin sun.

This is the 51st meeting between Hawaii and Fresno State. The Bulldogs hold the edge overall, 27-22-1, and with both teams as Mountain West members, 5-1.

Here’s a quick primer on the Bulldogs:

> The Bulldogs are allowing 12.6 points per game (fewest among FBS schools), and 4.3 points per game to MW opponents.

> The Bulldogs have not committed a turnover in 10 consecutive quarters.

> Marcus McMaryion is 15-2 as Fresno’s starting quarterback.

> In Jeff Tedford’s two seasons as FS head coach, the Bulldogs are 13-1 when they score first, and 16-1 when they lead at the half.

    Discuss.

  13. cappie the dog October 27, 2018 4:49 pm

    The shovel pass gave Hawaii a more makeable fourth down. Nine yards. Wasn’t that the point of the shovel pass? The coaches knew they weren’t going to get all of the 14 yards.

    Psychologically, the coach is telling the defense that he trusts them.

    Not like the onside kick from the last game.

  14. seewhy October 27, 2018 5:00 pm

    Thanks, ST! I’ll check it out. I am covered by HMSA too.

  15. seewhy October 27, 2018 5:02 pm

    I see we’re still going with the drive killing series opening runs. 🙄🤦🏽‍♂️

  16. Inyoface October 27, 2018 5:47 pm

    We are horrible on offense

  17. seewhy October 27, 2018 5:48 pm

    Yup, our defensive backfield sucks.

  18. Inyoface October 27, 2018 5:50 pm

    Why do they keep throwing to the sidelines, go vertical!

  19. Inyoface October 27, 2018 6:01 pm

    Defense is garbage

  20. Inyoface October 27, 2018 6:13 pm

    Feeling like a dodgers fan now smh

  21. MattyBoy October 27, 2018 6:16 pm

    Man I feel like we’re back in the Chow era again. This Hawaii team at this point in the season kinda sucks.

  22. Inyoface October 27, 2018 6:17 pm

    Surprised defense held them to a fg, we need a td now

  23. seewhy October 27, 2018 6:37 pm

    Hey Brian Smith, that’s how you utilize your RB with dump offs and wheel routes. Take notes.

  24. Inyoface October 27, 2018 6:43 pm

    Hire June Jones

  25. seewhy October 27, 2018 6:44 pm

    Das it…

  26. Rodney October 27, 2018 6:47 pm

    Watching a real run n shoot
    Saints vs Buffs

  27. Inyoface October 27, 2018 6:49 pm

    Embarrassing once again on national tv

  28. azwarrior22 October 27, 2018 6:51 pm

    Here’s what I see…

    On Defense, we get no pressure on the opposing QB so they light us up.

    On Offense, we have no run game, so we are double teamed.

    And that last play to end the half is a momentum killer.

  29. Rodney October 27, 2018 6:55 pm

    Gotta give credit to Fresno!!
    Out coached!!!
    But keep fighting boys!!!

  30. HawaiiMongoose October 27, 2018 6:59 pm

    That was more than a little painful to watch.

    Time to switch to Wahine volleyball.

  31. clyde October 27, 2018 7:02 pm

    Fresno clearly better prepared, executing to perfection and oozing confidence. A total mismatch. This ain’t on Cole, but if Hawaii can’t score on its first possession of the second half, I hope Rolo gives Moussa some PT.

  32. anywaaays!!! October 27, 2018 7:06 pm

    this is an embarrassment

  33. Rodney October 27, 2018 7:07 pm

    Does anyone feel that with the loss of our strength coach we possibly not as strength
    strong.Seems sometimes we get body slammed

  34. Tom-warriornation October 27, 2018 7:10 pm

    That 100 yard TD runback after our missed FG just before halftime is on our coaches—
    I saw our entire team walking to the sidelines totally not expecting that runback after that miss.

  35. cappie the dog October 27, 2018 7:16 pm

    Fresno State showed some class by not attempting a fake field goal.

  36. Rodney October 27, 2018 7:16 pm

    #33 I sensed that too, totally on coach..
    Gotta give bulldogs credit too.

  37. Rodney October 27, 2018 7:25 pm

    Let’s go Buffs!!!!

  38. Inyoface October 27, 2018 7:31 pm

    #32 We don’t havr a strength coach? Didn’t know that. I think they need a bye week bad.

  39. Inyoface October 27, 2018 7:31 pm

    What happen to Freddy holly?

  40. 808bowler October 27, 2018 7:32 pm

    Embarrassing on National tv. Smh no defense what so ever

  41. Honu888 October 27, 2018 7:38 pm

    Really no Offense either

  42. cappie the dog October 27, 2018 7:52 pm

    What looks more like running up the score: If you go for the first down and eventual touchdown or taking the three points?

  43. seewhy October 27, 2018 7:52 pm

    We make their backup look like a Heisman. 😂

  44. cappie the dog October 27, 2018 8:21 pm

    Good for you , Jeremy Moussa.

    Way to not quit.

  45. Inyoface October 27, 2018 8:22 pm

    Start Moussa

  46. clyde October 27, 2018 8:24 pm

    Mahalo, Rolo, for giving Moussa a shot. And good on the freshman for finishing it off.

  47. 808bowler October 27, 2018 8:25 pm

    Moussa is a player.

  48. cappie the dog October 27, 2018 8:25 pm

    Good decision.

    If you onside kick, you incite the Bulldogs to score again.

  49. Inyoface October 27, 2018 8:26 pm

    Something happened to Cole, lost that Mojo.

  50. Rodney October 27, 2018 8:27 pm

    Defense coaches need coach the double moves
    with our corners and safety keys….
    Im sure others are going attack us with double
    moves and throwing to the TE and run backs.
    Let’s get after it

  51. cappie the dog October 27, 2018 8:33 pm

    The bye week comes at the perfect time.

    UNLV is the season.

  52. Honu888 October 27, 2018 8:54 pm

    Give Moussa the start against Utah St next week. It won’t hurt. Our only change at the 7th win is against UNLV anyway. Dude has some poise and an arm.

  53. cappie the dog October 27, 2018 9:02 pm

    Cole McDonald is indeed in a funk.

    But I think it’s unlikely that the other two quarterbacks were going to pull out a victory.

    The quarterback isn’t playing defense.

    If Utah State is a dominant team, it’s not really going to matter who starts.

    The defense worries me slightly more than the offense.

  54. Another Loss October 27, 2018 9:04 pm

    6-7 is where Hawaii will end up. Utah St and San Diego St is a loss. The only strategy UNLV needs against Hawaii is to run the ball all night to secure a win.

    Maybe Hawaii’s football is not as good as everyone would have liked to believe. 6-1 to 6-7 W-L record. I think Rolo has the toughest coaching job in college football. I think he has the lowest salary also for HC’s in the MWC.

    Rolo is here to stay. If Chow survived through is 3.5 losing seasons, Hawaii should extend Rolo’s contract again.

  55. Savich October 27, 2018 9:13 pm

    Defense is crap. Covering on a slot back, turned out a pass touchdown on the same cover. Crap and slow.

  56. islandman October 27, 2018 9:22 pm

    The defense only gave up 13 pts in the 2nd half ( 37 in the 1st ).
    UH offense was 7 for 14 on 3rd downs and scored 20 pts.
    Fresno was allowing an average of 12.6 pts per game and only 4.3 pts for the last 3 games.
    Cole ran for 62 yds. and passed for 225 yds.

  57. islandman October 27, 2018 9:24 pm

    Fresno St. was the #1 scoring defense in the nation.

  58. Another Loss October 27, 2018 9:38 pm

    What would be a good match up is if we see UCF play Fresno St. I know Milton’s at UCF. But, I think Fresno State wins that game.

  59. cappie the dog October 27, 2018 9:44 pm

    56.

    I love the juxtaposition between your comments and the previous blogger’s comments.

    You’re presenting objective facts, but it probably won’t sway that person’s opinion.

  60. Another Loss October 27, 2018 9:51 pm

    Hawaii is just playing better competition now than it did at the start of the year.

    A win over UNLV will give Hawaii a winning record. I know it doesn’t help. But, anything is better than Von Appen and Chow. If next year Hawaii goes 6 wins or less, then I can see cause for concern because it will be Rolo’s 4th season.

  61. clyde October 27, 2018 10:21 pm

    Wahine volleyball postseason unlikely, football postseason stuck in idle … hopefully, Wahine soccer can salvage this weekend with a postseason clincher tomorrow. Raisa Strom-Okimoto is conference Player of the Year. Well, she should be.

  62. ai-eee-soos October 27, 2018 11:07 pm

    #60.

    2019’s schedule is tough:

    Arizona
    Oregon State
    at Washington
    Army (end of year)

    Boise State (TBD)
    Air Force (TBD)

    Plus our West Div

    Six wins are gonna be tough to get.

    Fasten your sear belt.

  63. burro sabio October 27, 2018 11:36 pm

    It’s not the DBs, it’s the DL.

  64. seewhy October 27, 2018 11:53 pm

    Yup… Just think, this season was supposed to be our easiest schedule! I see us winning 3 games at best next season.

  65. H-Man October 28, 2018 12:01 am

    I’m at a loss….never thought it would get this bad with this team, with this coaching staff. But it seems like the team has regressed to the level of the Chow era – to get blown out on national TV where Hawaii didn’t have any offensive or defensive answers to put up a fight. It’s one thing to get blown out by the likes of Ohio St, but this was at the hands of Fresno State.

  66. suckkabooya October 28, 2018 12:45 am

    I gotta say, Fan Phones is much better than the “fluffy” Call the Coach show. Lots of passion. Keep the criticisms coming, get it all out of your systems. Therapy time. The “big picture” is still visible (for the program/system success), just not as bright right now. The target is still “on track”. Expectation vs reality. Elephants? IDK.

  67. cappie the dog October 28, 2018 4:22 am

    The bye is poorly placed.

    The final score is the end result of playing ten weeks in a row.

    Hawaii could have used one after coming home from Provo.

  68. cappie the dog October 28, 2018 4:40 am

    61.

    I hope it doesn’t rain.

  69. cappie the dog October 28, 2018 4:46 am

    Correction.

    If it does rain, Hawaii wins the tiebreaker against a potentially victorious UC Davis.

    Hawaii beat UC-Davis 3-2 at their place.

  70. Buffoman October 28, 2018 6:42 am

    Thinking aloud, that coach’s comment after a loss, now four, that goes, “that loss is on me, we need to prepare better”, is almost akin to doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. Could a change of practice fundamentals, not drastic but different, with slightly different plays and player instill that loss of freshness and urgency we once had? You’re right, I’m no coach, but it seems that we’ve started to look like we’re playing to not lose, to try to stay close and not play like we “that team no one wants to play.” Something needs to change if we want to end on a high note, as things aren’t getting easier.

  71. Inyoface October 28, 2018 7:17 am

    We need to recruit D lineman in the off season. A solid 2 deep Corp is what we need. We lost a few in the last couple seasons that didn’t have a chance to play.

  72. islandman October 28, 2018 7:17 am

    69. If it rains hard, are you saying the soccer game would be cancelled ?
    If so and UC Davis wins, then Wahine would drop to 5th place because UCD has 2 ties and UH has no ties.

  73. Another Loss October 28, 2018 8:18 am

    62, Wow I didn’t see next year’s schedule. You’re right a 6 win season next season will be difficult.

    Hawaii can’t run the ball and can’t stop the run on defense. That is always a bad combination.
