Good morning to everyone!!!

There has been a lot of talk about limiting gray shirting so I wouldn’t be surprised if the rule changes soon. The NCAA could adopt what other conferences are trying to do and limiting the total signees in a year (the initials plus gray shirts) to 28 or so. That would allow 3 or more gray shirts each year.

Thankfully, UH wouldn’t be affected much if the NCAA went to that type of rule. For example, this UH recruiting class would be fine under a rule like the SEC adopted. The key is that UH has enough depth that they aren’t having to take too many gray shirts to load up on their recruiting class.

It would be nice if academic qualification wasn’t such a big concern, though.

It’s amazing how the No Clue At All gang keeps showing their exclusionary mindset whenever they come up with new rules.

Chanigng the gray shirt rules seems to work more against the borderline students than the system itself. That extra semester to get their qualifications up to snuff could make a difference for these 17-19 y/o kids whose lights just turned on to the importance of education. It would be a shame to make it even more difficult for them to get to that “next level” of education, and football.

MIH because it seems the little guys may be catching up with some of the big boys. They can’t let that happen.

Signing Day notes: Boise State has success without elite signees

Top college programs around the country are touting their four-star and five-star football signees this morning. Then there’s Boise State.

I am totally ashamed of the officiating at the Men’s Volleyball matches this season. I know that these are the same local officials who work the wahine games but the number of miscalls during the wahine games are far less. Perhaps because the game is slower and the speed of the ball is much less. Word of the ineptness of these officials (including the line judges) will soon be widespread on the mainland. After last night’s game I have seen enough and strongly endorse Mr. Tsai’s suggestion that we should either have replays or get younger officials.

Agree that some “calls” last night by the end line judges hurt UH as nearly every close call went to UCLA – of course, us fans, let out huge “boos” each time they replayed the call and it was obviious the line judge blew it!!!

Same can be said for previous games and it’s coming from different officials – bring back the “twins”!!!

Great, exciting game that really ended in the dumps when we discovered that some ass hole went into the boosters room and stole a container of Midori’s browinies and ate half of the other container that she made for the players after game meal – very low class!!!

Again, we saw Tsai-kos from afar – especially now that I have to use binoculars to see anything – but I haven’t run into anyone between sets recently. I

I’ve seen Chawan_Cut and Stretch sitting a row or two behind the announcers during the volleyball matches, but I don’t recognize the others with them – are they Tsai-kos whose names I haven’t yet attached to a face? And of course, Myki and SJ in the first row above the concourse. As for the A-Houses – I’m afraid I haven’t yet seen them – hi!
C-C – will you be back at your regular seat by the pep band this evening?

The 2010 opening softball game is Thursday – I’ll attending most of the first game and DrDoc will come after work for the Wahine/McNeese State game. Will anyone else be attending? Let me know because I’m going to bring some snacks & other goodies. Barring rain, I’ll be sitting in the top row, third base side.

It’s been interesting reading the comments – alas, with a manfifying glass – about the basketball teams. To compare this year’s women’s team and coaching staff with the last coach based only on a Win-Loss record doesn’t make sense. At a minimum, the interaction between the coaching staff and the players as well as the players with the fans is something to cheer about.

With respect to the men’s basketball team, I agree that it is time to move on and go through a major re-structuring starting at the top. I understand the attraction of individual players like Williams, Lay and Flemings, but there’s no TEAM on this team.

If anyone from the football coaching staff is reading today’s blog, I was wondering if we could have another seminar sometime during April.

I agree with coach wade comments in the paper. his vball players did play a good game but I must admit those bears played a better one. they seem to have had the luck on their side in addition to keeping the ball alive when ever the warriors tried to put the ball down. that tongan player just terminated everything set to him. yes the officiating was poor but give credit to ucla and warriors for the battle they put on last night. if you have not caught a mens vball game you missing a good performance.

It’s a beautiful day in Hawaii! Better than places like Seattle, Boise, Corvallis, and South Bend for sure. I’m glad we got, hopefully, a really good kicker. Perfect for him to come on his visit and this great weather that we have. Other subjects:
1) When will the spring roster be published and the first depth chart?
2) What’s the situation w/ the medical redshirts, other than Taylor who was denied….guys like Rocky, Letuli, Brashton, etc?
3) How is Ostrowski doing? Haven’t heard about him lately. And Billy?
4) Nash had his chance. We need to make a change. For 3 years, the team hasn’t gotten better noticeably and we are not going in the right direction. Problem is recruiting…guys they got are not really contributing and are on scholarship. Guys like Jiang and Kurtz. Hardly much playing time. Why? They are not good enough to get extended minutes against D1 competition. If they were, they would be playing more. Solution, we need a coach who is very good at recruiting and getting athletic, quick players who can shoot. There are a lot of good players from 5’9″ to 6’3″ where you can probably get 3 or 4 in the program. Every good UH team in the past had good guards. I.E. Ruffin and Akana; A.C. and Alika; Campbell, Savovic, English, and MacIntyre. We don’t need a big team. We need players who can go up and down the court and handle the ball and shoot. Compliment that w/ a couple of swingmen, and a couple of 6’8″ to 6’9″ players who are good rebounders will be good enough. A 6’10” or 7 footer is overrated in college. Come On, Man! I’m sorry. Hawaii deserves to have a really good basketball team.

I thought UCLA served really tough and that it was the biggest factor in the game. I wish UH would get rid of those float serves that allowed UCLA to pass with ease and run their middle attack. It was an automatic point for them.

Howz It “cliffsanchezfan” an honor and pleasure to read your accolades and mention some “GREAT” players of my era as you know what exactly I am saying and where I am coming from. The guys you mention above where “AWESOME” players and would blow this Hawaii team off the court as they were talented athletes and had “PRIDE” about how they played the game and why they were wearing the green and white while performing in front of die hard endearing Hawaii fans.

That “GOLDEN ERA” of Rainbow Basketball was unique with not only the Hawaii players that played but the college basketball talent that we played against as many went on to the pros and made great careers. CliffFan I can’t thank you enough for the mentioning of my guys David “sky walker” Hopkins, Rodney slim daddy Jones, Jump shooting Gavin Smith, Tony “thief of bagdad” Webster, Racky Sesler, Henry H Hollingsworth, Robert “ROB DOB” Smith and playing to the name of “Rainbow Warrior”
with all the effort and desire of being the best with pride and determination !

With better coaching, don’t you think that this years team would have a better record? How many fast break points does UH have compared to their opponents? We have a “cupcake” type of schedule and still have a losing record. Although the talent level is not real outstanding, I do think that they are lacking good coaching. This reminds me of when June J took over the football program and had a good year with the basic players from the previous years. Look at the difference with bb women from last year to this year. I admit that I thought Coach Bob was the logical choice to take over Reilly’s program, but he had 3 years and they aren’t getting any better if not worst. A long time ago when I was unemployed, my only affordable entertainment was watching every one of UH bb games on TV when they won only 1 game and lost something like 29. This team looks almost as terrible as that team. Thank you Bob Nash for your years of dedication to UH, but, even you must admit that you’re not getting the job done by guaranteeing at least 18 wins. Not this year, sorry. Aloha.

UH men’s VB played tough last night, but they could not offset the bad ref calls and allowed UCLA to momemtum and win points at close scores – 19 – 20. Granted UCLA served tough, but the “steam” was taken away from the Rainbows as the calls came at cruical times within a game (UH rallied to tie or move ahead only to have the bad line calls.)

Can’t wait to see the 6’9″ OH and 6′ 10″ MB recruits from Florida and New Jersey join the team next season( early commits in Nov 2009 ). The UCLA roster is filled with 6’6″, 6’7″, 6’9″ freshman and sophmore players who are reserves this year. Believe UH has 4 or 5 seniors this year allowing Coach Wade a greater lattitude in recruiting for 2010. Same goes for 2011 as there are 5 or 6 Juniors on the team.

BTW, #28 for UCLA has a “big, bad attitude”. Had the feeling that he wanted to give UH players the finger after getting a kill.

As much as I personally dislike Al Scates, gotta admire his strategy/showman skills during each game. As with Friday night, after the first game when UCLA had double digit service errors, his players put the ball in play and stayed away from serving into the net or long. UH, however, continued to try and get the ace and increased the number of their service errors. To blunt a UH drive, he would discuss something with the down judge, much to the delight of fans and Mrs A-House who kept yelling, “sit down al”, but it took away the Rainbows momentum. He would then sit down with a smile on his face and during one such situation, he acknowledged the crowd by spinning around, waving his hands.

Hang in there CRW! Like the news is ayin’ “Snowmaggedon” has come to your neck of the woods. Stay warm buddy.

Ralph mentioned an idea last night, where a men’s volleyball game would be preceded by a women’s basketball game. A potential problem I see with that is that you’d need to switch the court from basketball to volleyball settings. I’m not sure if that can be done super quick or not.

Na Wahine holding their own, need to block out under the defensive basket to eliminate the easy put backs. A tighter defense can make it happen, a win for Na Wahine.

Article about how the budgetary problems with the state of Nevada may result in HUGE budget cuts for the Athletic Departments at UNLV and Nevada. The author indicates that either the students will get a huge increase in the athletic fee or both Nevada schools could end up dropping out of D-IA!

During the 2007-2008 fiscal year, the state funded about $6.5 million to Nevada’s athletics department, according to a USA Today database. That amount accounted for 27 percent of the athletics program revenue, the most out of all contributors including donors and entertainment rights. Nevada’s counterpart, UNLV, on the other hand, raked in $7.2 million from the state, which accounted for 18.6 percent — the highest — of the Rebels’ revenue. Sports cost the state government almost $14 million two years ago.

With the current state budget, $14 million is pocket change compared to the $900 million deficit facing Gov. Jim Gibbons. However, $14 million is still a large amount, especially with almost 10 percent of the state unemployed. That $14 million would eliminate the need to lay off hundreds of state workers and cut spending on necessary programs and education to the bare minimum.

Sports make money. Sports lose money. Sports need to be self-sufficient and the state government needs to cut its funding to both the Nevada and UNLV programs.

Students have no choice but to help fund athletics.

According to the database, Nevada is sucking $1.1 million a year from students in fees built into academic credits. Only two schools in the WAC did not charge their students – Louisiana Tech and Hawaii.

Nevada athletics is a business.

If a business consistently loses money, it goes bankrupt. If it makes a profit, then it’s rewarded with benefits. Most of Nevada’s sports have been going bankrupt and should not be allowed at the university.

That would be great to get that RB. If not, along w/ Green & Dimude we still have Rosehill. And John Lister should be pretty good. Interestingly, Elisara, one of our LB recruits from Kapolei was ranked 9th nationally as a FB, even though he only ranked 30+ as an LB. At around 242, he’d be a good back-up. Also, some of those bantam-sized recruits (at the slot position) we have coming in have lightning speed and could easily be utilized if we’re hurting for numbers.

Happy Superbowl Morning Tsaiko Nation as we get up and stretch our body to another day of life as looking at “SUNSHINE” and clear skies with some good kona coffee brewing as scramble eggs and portugese sausage are ready to go “wiki wiki” style with me here in overcast Los Angeles.

Read this morning that the bows has lost their 5th game in a roll with another dissapointing performance as they are at the bottom of the conference with no sight of turning it around because of internal problems, lack of talent (really) and a coaching system that won’t win even on the high school level.

Turning the ball over comes from the lack of poor execution and fundamental play from all 5 positions on the court. When players don’t believe in the offensive scheme they will play out of it as robotic play hampers individual athletic ability which causes frustration among players and coaches who desperatly want to WIN but this season and Rainbow Team are going down hill so fast that “LOSING” is in the mind set and “CONFIDENCE” has been shaken.

Recruiting “GOOD” players to come play for Hawaii is like finding a needle in a truck load of hay stack as that has been long gone for quite some time as you don’t use your former players to guide and help you as Hawaii coaches has their own agenda and players of past just remain that of gone and forgotten as the mainland has plenty of athletes but until you change the philosophy of leadership mind set then “LOSING” will be frustrating to watch and attention to other matters take priority namely wahine basketball and mens volleyball because of “EFFORT” and “DESIRE” that equals to success.

WOW is all I can say as I would of not never thought that HARD TIMES of Rainbow Basketball has dropped off so “BAD” but it is what it is and we all have to eat and pay the bills as your hard earn money being a season ticket holder or paying for a game ticket must really hit the opu hard with out any guava juice to wash it all down.

Well Tsaiko Nation cheer up there is always next year BUT how can you see next year when there is no light at the tunnel and getting “QUALITY” High School players to commit and play for 4 years as that fixture alone has been gone from Rainbow Basketball with 2 years and out of JC ball in the MIX with “NOTHING” to show for it as your program is not building and your continuity of Hawaii player “PRIDE” is not there or even close.

Off this morning to DOMINATE the tennis and basketball scene in LA as one thing for sure this former “OLD” 51 year old Rainbow Player plays with pride, ability and desire to compete and “WIN BABY WIN” not only for him self but who he represents the Ohana of Hawaii Nei as it is “simply ther best, better then all the rest” !

to those still awake and to those who just woke up, good morning. aloha to rainbow cliff, i hear you brother, i hear you….sad to see where the men’s bb program has slid too, time for a change is an understatement.

everyone, have a great sunday, be thankful for what you have, but most of all be thankful for the freedom of choice. last night lyn and i were blessed to be involved with our church’s prison ministry at Halawa, and it was very humbling to be there in front of 200 prisoners…….it was a total of 400 prisoners, 200 per hour. we put on a praise and worship concert…..and it was sad.

it reminded me that as parents, it is our responsibility to insure that we educate our kids that there are consequences for our choices, and a reaction for our action…….very humbling experience.

let us be thankful for our ohana, our beds that we sleep in, and the food that we have……and thankful for our Tsaiko ohana…..now have a restful day 🙂

It was horrible to see how several schools took 35+ recruiting classes and ended up pulling a bunch of scholarships from their current players to make room. That normally happened after a coaching change or when a coach needed to improve his team quickly to avoid getting fired.

If the gray shirt ruled wasn’t abused like that then maybe there would be no talk about changing things. But a lot of NCAA restrictions are made to close loopholes that are being abused by the big budget schools…unfortunately, the way they close the loopholes can end up hurting other schools or the student athletes.

Last year the SEC put their cap at 28. If that was the case this year the rule would not have affected UH. With UH recruiting more high school students, there will be no problem staying under 28 each year and the proposed rule would not hurt UH at all…it would limit other schools but not hurt UH so this rule might actually be good for UH.

With a limit of 85 scholarships, UH could not take more than 28 every year anyway with a focus on high school recruits since 4×28 is 112, and if all players used a redshirt year then 5×28 is 140. UH also may have more 6th year players than any other school in the country (I’ve never heard of any other school having the number of 6th year applicants that UH has this year), so you can see how UH couldn’t take more than 28 in a year anyway.

sometimes it can be so confusing with grey shirt, red shirt, etc., as a grey shirt, the student athlete pays his own way and is only a part time student, and cannot participate with the team…..if i understand that correctly. i know a red shirt is on the team, practices but cannot participate in games.

with that said, is that comparable to having a CC, no, not a cattle call but a credit card, and you only pay the minimum every month? you never get ahead, and always have to answer to the ‘previous total’……

don’t know if that made sense, but it makes me think that we can never get ahead of the curve……………….whew………….

Curve heck I just want to get ahead on the straight an narrow.

Anyway, Super Bowl Sunday!!! Two explosive offenses, two MVP caliber quarterbacks, wonder which defense will show up??? Gotta go with the Peyton Manning the real MVP and arguably the best QB in the NFL. Leadership, Experience, and plays with the will to win. Plus they got some Poly Boys in Aaron Francisco and Fili Moala too. I like the Saints but I think I’ll go with the Colts today. Regardless should be one awesome game!!!

Rough time for MBB. Coach Nash got his shot. If the results aren’t there, JD can’t let personalities get in the way of doing what’s for the best of the Dept.
I appreciate all that Bob Nash has done for the school and has meant to the MBB program but not everyone can be a successful HC, esp. in Hawaii with the recruiting challenges faced because of geography and demographics. It’s time to move on.

Time to get the chips, pop, and assorted munchies for the game! Hmmmm, maybe subsandwiches?
