Wahine just have to keep on winning.

  2. Cindy Luis October 1, 2018 10:03 am

    1. actually not. even if they will, the RPI can drop based on the RPI of the teams they’ve played and the teams those teams have played.

  3. iGrokSpock October 1, 2018 10:26 am

    RPI system sucks, doesn’t it?

  4. Cindy Luis October 1, 2018 10:29 am

    3. yes it does. which is why men’s basketball will no longer use it.

  5. Maui Wahine VB Fan October 1, 2018 11:23 am

Since the RPI is at 100, is Hawaii considering playing UCLA (RPI 23) on the road to make up the match that was cancelled due to Hurricane Lane?

  6. Yankee Fan October 1, 2018 12:02 pm

    Whatever happened to Sarah Liva?

  7. Hobbz October 1, 2018 12:32 pm

I thought the Wahine beat UCI on the road? Doesn’t that help their RPI? Hopefully, they can pull off the wins against Cal Poly and UCSB this weekend. Go Bows! 🏐🌈

  8. Warriorfan October 1, 2018 2:00 pm

R5 no need their chances for an at large are slim even if they beat ucla , just have to concentrate on going undefeated in conference.
The portland and kansas state losses are loooking terrible right now.

  9. Cindy Luis October 1, 2018 3:37 pm

    5. not under consideration

  10. Maui Wahine VB Fan October 1, 2018 4:19 pm

Cindy and R6: Thank You for your responses, I am definitely bummed about not facing UCLA this season.

The question that I have is: if Hawaii is tied with other Big West teams at the end of the conference season for first place, how does the BW determine the Automatic Qualifier (AQ) into the NCAA Tournament?

  11. H-Man October 1, 2018 4:25 pm

When you see where some of the teams are ranked, mainly the ones that the Wahine beat, the 100 ranking makes sense. The only ranking that seems to be out of kilter is Irvine’s 39. Their overall record to date id 8-7, but then again they have a quality win against UPI #24 St Mary’s.

  12. OrbitalRipZ October 1, 2018 4:30 pm

The first NCAA RPI was used in 1992 (a year of infamy in the history of Na Wahine volleyball). As we all know, in general, only 25% of the Index is based on the team’s winning percentage or actual performance against teams they played at home, on the road, or at a neutral site.

The 100 RPI is a drop of 60 places from the final RPI of 2017. Granted the 2017 and 2018 teams are not the same, but I have never seen a top team’s RPI drop 60 places from the end of a season to the start of a new RPI season. In other words, even though I expect the RPI for the Bows to improve greatly, it will not improve enough to be a positive factor to help Hawai’i reach that “bubble” status.

I hope I am wrong, but it is evident to me that Hawai’i must win the conference title outright because an at-large bid (like last year’s), based on the RPI whatever it turns out to be, is probably out of reach. (Yes, I know the RPI is just one factor The Committee considers, but it is the biggest factor.)

Lots of 2018 volleyball left to play, but this week’s results will be HUGE in determining if 1992 repeats itself. (BTW: Only 2 teams have been invited to every NCAA D-1 Women’s Volleyball Championship. Name them.)

  13. H-Man October 1, 2018 4:30 pm

Er…RPI….distracted. watching Prime Original’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.

  14. OrbitalRipZ October 1, 2018 4:33 pm

Sorry: “The first NCAA RPI for women’s volleyball was used in 1992.”

Wahines played like 100 at the beginning of the season. But i.e. way in past…Wish Granato reads defense better (like Norene) and mixes power attack with few roll shots to baseline open space and subtle tips over block. Do not let defense to settle in one pattern. Once, Granato starts going, opens up doors for others too. Dislike back row duty by Natasha, and front row duty by Ross (unless bleeding heavily). Like mixing up slide attack by Natasha and Krug. Wish setting for Casey, bit behind the net, so that Casey gets wider angle to avoid block. Wish Natasha guards the top killer. Setters, please, communicate with hitters before each serve, so that hitters have time to read the defense. Wish more transition offence shots rather meekly sending over to get whipped. Wahines can upset #87 with A-plus game…

  16. Cindy Luis October 1, 2018 5:01 pm

    6. nothing happened to Liva. She played Friday. Krug subbed in against Fullerton. Krug got the start and played the entire match against UC Riverside

  17. Cindy Luis October 1, 2018 5:08 pm

    10. there is criteria that determines tiebreaker.
    1 is head to head.
    2. sets won against each other.
    3. then they look at outcome against the 3rd place team and work through the standings.

  18. Cindy Luis October 1, 2018 5:12 pm

my main issue with the RPI is the opponents’ opponents. you have no control over how others schedule. It is no surprise that men’s basketball will be using a new system starting this tournament

  19. Cindy Luis October 1, 2018 5:14 pm

Williams cleared to practice, no longer wearing a walking boot.

  20. Cindy Luis October 1, 2018 5:36 pm

    RPI #100

Highest would go is probably #38. And that is by winning the rest of the games this season. Miss the playoffs or at-large bid through big west conference. Must win big west conference.

  22. Bleachercoach October 1, 2018 6:50 pm

    Warriorfan#8. Correct Assessment.
Our only chances to get in is to win the Big West outright! Period! That in itself would be a remarkable season! Lets Go Bows!

  23. MauiBoyAlaska October 1, 2018 7:07 pm

How is UC Irvine at (8-7) at #39 and Hawaii so low? Hawaii beat UC Irvine on the road. The system makes to sense. Hope the Wahine runs the table.

  24. Savich October 1, 2018 7:28 pm

Hawai’i holds 4 national title. The built program requires them to make a direct impact on the national title outlook. And since this year Hawai’i is not perfect, the RPI is at #100. UC Irvine is hire because their statistics are judged on the same criteria, but with an expectation to win the big west or come close to winning it. The big west is judged. Hawaii is #100.

  25. Ki October 1, 2018 7:38 pm

    Stanford & Penn st.

  26. Savich October 1, 2018 7:44 pm

H-Man: now I know who guys are. Toby Neil, Neil Plackcy, Chris McKinney, Cathryn Coulter, Stuart Woods, James Patterson, Mark Patek,…few of the books on these authors. All mystery novels.

  27. OrbitalRipZ October 1, 2018 8:13 pm

25 …. Correct ….. Many would have said Nebraska (out in 1981), some might have even said Hawaii (1992).

  28. Nomu1001 October 1, 2018 8:37 pm

Let’s see where we are at end of season. Appreciate the sacrifices these girls make, how they have given so much to support the program. So, let’s do our part and support this team and coaching staff. We all have to set an example for these players as well, it doesnt work just one way. When people sometimes get overly critical, it can get a little painful. Thing is, at the heart of it all, everyone obviously loves this team, year in and year out.

So, regarding rpi, isn’t it a good thing to keep what might be perceived as politics out of the sport? Very few things at this level aren’t influenced by politics to some extent. But, it seems reasonable that the selection committee would try to be fair to everyone. There are a lot of teams across the country that work their butts off to get to the post season. Unfortunately, they seem to rely heavily on a quantitative method that places qualitative albeit subjective arguments low on the ladder.

On the other hand, the selection committee seems to have gotten it right pretty much every year. Hawaii got past Penn State a few years ago. Not too shabby. BYU surprised people as well. Point is, whether you are no. 1 or no. 12 in your region, you still got to win. Think the reason why Hawaii has consistently made it into the post season, no matter what their ranking, is because they have earned it, showing they deserve consideration. Sometimes there are head scratchers. This year will be no different. You have to win and earn your way.
With the level of competition, there should be no free rides.

  29. islandman October 2, 2018 5:58 am

Granato currently has the same service reception percentage as Akiu, .958 and Makenna has received 50 more times.
    Okino’s receptions pct is .974.

  30. ballerz October 2, 2018 7:24 am

    1. yes, agree.

  31. H-Man October 2, 2018 8:49 am

#2, Just to clarify my comment. They will have to win the Big West to get into the NCAA Tournament. To do this, they will simply have to keep on winning. Nothing to do with the RPI. Their RPI won’t get them into the tournament this year.

  32. FitTrainer October 2, 2018 8:50 am

Someone on last thread asked if Maglio is returning for senior season of beach volleyball. Other forum says Lisa Strand Ma’aa made a statement about it in ore-game. Is there his true Cindy? It would be a huge boost to this season’s team.

  33. Sheila October 2, 2018 2:46 pm

#20, My personal ranking based on most recent playing: ~25 Cal Poly is bit ahead of cluster of five teams [~ 30 Hawaii (8-5), ~33 Oregon (9-5), ~35 UC Irvine (8-7), ~40 UC Santa Barbara (11-6), ~45 Long Beach State (10-7)]. Who ever brings A+ game can upset other team that play A- game. If RPI ranking is disregarded, both Hawaii and Irvine could upset Cal Poly. RPI is solely to drop unfavorable teams and zero value in middle of the season. Krug raised Wahines to next level. Wonder, how could Liva’s serve (best serving stat) be incorporated into team?
