UH lands speedy receiver
Allen Sampson, a receiver/kick returner from Plant High (Tampa, Fla.) told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors.
“I know a lot of people go to Hawai‘i for the scenery and weather, but I fell in love with the program,” Sampson said.
Sampson, who is 5 feet 8 and 155 pounds, said he can run 40 yards in 4.38 seconds. A scout timed him at 4.39 seconds.
Last season, he caught 56 passes for 867 yards and 11 touchdowns. He averaged 31.6 yards per kickoff return and 14.18 yards per punt return .
Plant is a two-time state champion.

The thing about a last memory is it becomes a lasting memory.
UH’s season-ending loss to Wisconsin was bad, but it was magnified because it reminded many of the season-ending losses to Notre Dame and Georgia.
With months to stew, Warrior fans sought hopeful news that was supposed to be supplied through recruiting. But because most of the 2010 recruiting class was formed in the summer of 2009, there were fewer available scholarships for December and January. It also left UH fans wondering if the Warriors were being left behind with the recent news of local players making Mainland plans.
Pass rusher Beau Yap’s commitment provided a much-needed boost for the Warriors and their fans. It also served as a reminder that the Warriors have a potentially good recruiting class, which should get even better when the last few commitments are announced before Wednesday’s signing date.
The overall quality of this class won’t be known for a few years. But, for now, the Warrior fans have another reason to look forward to the start of the 2010 season rather than to the end of the 2009 season.

Today, we say goodbye to one our loyal bloggers — Long Time UH Fan.
Fred Pang was a wonderful man with a great family. I remember when I delivered a prize to his house. Fred and his wife kept trying to give me a bag of goodies. I kept saying “no,” they kept insisting. When I got home, Wena asked: “Why are you coming home with more stuff than you left with?” That’s the thing about this blog. My contribution pales in comparison to what the readers offer.
We’ll always miss you, Fred.

Tsaiko Culture, what is this Tsaiko Culture?
This thing we call Tsaiko Culture as an anomaly, an enigma if you will. It is not just a blog, it is not just people writing about UH Warrior Football, it is not about telling jokes, it is not about trading recipes, it is not about going to a Tail gate, it is not about singing karaoke, it is not about going bowling, it is not about going to the movies, it is not about helping worthy causes, it is not about traveling across the United States to cheer for the Warriors at New Orleans…it is more, it is bigger than that, it is bigger than life itself.
In no way, form or manner, did Stephen Tsai ever imagine that one day, he would be standing in the Stan Sheriff Arena, in the Wong Hospitality room surrounded by a group of maniacal Warrior foot ball fans…. No way.
So, what is this Tsaiko Culture? For Kekoa, his Hawaiian flag that he carried with him to New Orleans, he took it everywhere with him and whenever the photo opportunity presented itself, he proudly displayed his Hawaiian Flag; his flag was his shield of faith he took into battle. But it’s more than just a flag, it represents everything we stand for.
A Tsaiko once told me, ‘I never thought at my age, I’d still be making friends, and not just friends, but really good friends…’ No, DPK did not tell me that, but think about that, that says so much about this group of people called Tsaikos. We welcome all into our group, the passion we have for our Warrior Football Team is the thread that weaves through all of us that brings us together like a sweater. Like one of those Bill Cosby sweaters, you know, very warm, cuddly, like a security blanket with sleeves.
The Tsaiko culture has evolved into an entity that no one had any inkling of. We have our benchmarks, you know, what we consider ‘cornerstones’ of the group, where a certain item or event is entrenched in our memories forever. Just look at the memorabilia that everyone brought tonight….incredible. We could talk for hours about Gigi’s muumuus, Homey’s forearms, Homey singing to Elvis Pressley, Homey’s pretty hair, hey wait a minute, that’s enough about Homey. Then there is ST’s world famous rendition of ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’, which is mind boggling. James singing about his horse with no name, addahknowjoe belting out about his American Woman, Stretch going Sailing, Lyn showing off her boots, Esme being a Heartbreaker, Pride bringing out the cole porter in all of us, Jason crooning love ballads to his auntys, DPK upsetting Donald Duck, Wreck being a gigolo, Steve M. aka VITO, VITO, VITO, Liz K. bringing the phantoms out of the Opera for us, and Kekaula bringing it home with Kanaka WaiWai.
Or how about our mainland counterparts, Rich2176, Ronnie, Garret, WA fan, Las Vegas…they never stop to amaze me. Our outer island ohana including Whitey and Duffer from Maui, these 2 guys are the mayors of Maui, with their office located in the back right corner of Tiffanys in Wailuku. If you want to know about what is going on in Maui, they are more hooked up than you would want to know.
On Kauai, Aunty Liz…she holds down the Garden Isle for the Tsaikos. On the Big Island, let’s see, could it be Big Hilo Fan? Not only is this guy funny, but almost pretty smart too. For an attorney, he is pretty likeable, I don’t care what DPK says.
The common thing is the Warrior Beat, and every day, day in and day out, ST brings out another story line, and the banter begins. True, we might go off topic just a little some times, I still don’t know what kim chee soup, and mabo tofu have in common with Warrior Football, but hey, we always come full circle, and bring it back.
Tsaiko Culture, to sum it up, it is a feeling, it’s not the shirts, the glasses, the banners, those are just what I would say are memorial stones…to signify an event or a moment. Much like the stones that God had Joshua place in the River Jordan as Joshua led the Israelites to the Promised Land, these items are our memorial stones.
The real Tsaiko culture lives in all of us…it is that warm and fuzzy feeling we get when we open the blog and see a familiar name, it’s that feeling we get when we’re laughing by ourselves at work or home when we read a good joke from Las Vegas, it’s that tugging at our heart and the tears from our eyes when we read about one of our fellow Tsaikos going through a tough time, it’s that heart throbbing ache when one of the Tsaikos has lost a loved one…..like I always say….make memories, make memories, make memories. When I say what are the 5 F’s….football, food, family, friends, fun, and soon to be the 6th F….FISHING…..haha.
I thank all of you for being who you are, I thank our committee members and organizers, I thank ST for his tireless efforts, and I thank Akua for watching over all of us. We are and will be forever more…THE TSAI-KOS

and I needed to be reminded that the world has good people and not only mean spirited and/or fraudulent people. unfortunately, i deal with many who i would categorize in this latter group. which is one of the reasons why I am glad to have people like LizK around, to remind me not to live my life in the negative.

Mack is starting to have a knack for local recruits having second thoughts and securing away the commitment. When I looked at Ferds ranking yesterday I was really surprised to see Yap had a commitment to Baylor, which pissed me off and triggered my negative post on recruiting. (thoughts are still reserved on the head coach.) Of all the top recruits, Yap has the enormous potential to make the most out of his career with the Warriors. During and after is playing days at UH. No doubt will he be a star. Great fit, solid choice! Looking into the future, he wont have a second guessing bone in his body! Right on Stant! – If he could be in charge of local recruiting, we’d be done recruiting for the year already.

Ya know, when I read that list yesterday, I wanted to say that I thought Beau Yap should have been at least a top ten or possibly top five recruit.
But if I had said that, folks might have accused me of favoritism because I am a Kamehameha graduate. So I didn’t say anything at the time.
Judging by the reaction on the blog here, its obvious that many here consider him one of the “big ones”. In any case, its wonderful news that he will be a Warrior!

I had just wanted to stop by for a quick visit (“lurker quckie”???), but had to post for LTUHF. And then Bulla’s Tsaiko Charter brought back a rush of incredible memories.
A-Joe (and Sports). Have provided unique distinction for Tsaikos. Among the privileged who have Tsaiko insignia on their vehicles, who have not had that moment of pride when someone taps you on the shoulder and asks, “Hey, that’s really cool, where did you get it?” And that’s only a small piece of all the contributions they’ve made.
Just the other night when everyone was already asleep, I was tired from hours of reading and wanting a nightcap before bed. Beer was too much liquid, so I decided on a shot of single malt scotch which I love, but rarely partake in. Went over to the hutch and picked out my special Tsaiko shot glass that was a gift from Stretch. It occupies a place of honor next to my Tsaiko beer mug.(made by Stretch). Everyone in my family knows these items are off limits. I sat at my desk and savored the relaxing warmness of Tsaiko memories (and scotch!). Really slept well after that.
The foundation for a championship team is defense. I’m glad UH has tried to address the defensive side of the ball by trying to add beef, strength, and speed to improve stopping the run. Now we need Jeremy Ioane to help us solidify the back end and improve the pass coverage and run tackling ability. I believe our offense will move the ball and score some points. Based on last year, we need to focus on being more efficient in the red zone and better percentage on field goals. Either that or we need to score from farther out by making longer TD passes. I’m still a little concerned w/ depth on the OL and I still feel we need a tank of a running back on short yardage situations to pick up valuable first downs. Do we have somebody in the program to fit the bill? I would love to see the spring depth chart. The strength of the team will obviously be the receiving corps. Give a lot of reps to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th string receivers to build for the future. We know what Salas, Lane, Pollard, Taylor, etc. can do. Bradley will be back in the fall. We should be thinking about and preparing for USC already. Win that and it will give the team confidence going on the road at Army and Colorado the following 2 weeks. Welcome to all the new recruits who will be Warriors.

Condolences to LTUHF’s family. I did not know him but I know he was a great man. Just look at what his passing did on this blog. It brings out memories, good feelings, eloquent thoughts on paper and a few tears.
I wish that when my time comes, I will be remembered with the same reverence as displayed on this day.

My condolences to the Pang family….I didn’t personally know Fred but I’ve “seen” him often enough while lurking that I feel that I know him…he definitely will be missed….
Now that UH lost out on it’s late push for Epenesa….and Lagafuaina apparently confirmed his committed to UW….but JMHO that it can’t hurt UH to make one last recruiting push for Sani Fuimaono (Punahou) and/or Foi Foi (Kapolei)…..since UH still needs to maintain depth at DT…..’cuz IMHO not many DL prospects (other than Koa Ka’ai) in next year’s local Class of 2011….when you consider that the top OIA teams (Kahuku, Farrington, Leilehua) and top ILH teams (Kamehameha-0ahu, Saint Louis, Iolani, Punahou) graduate most of their respective starting Dlines.
Having said that….I was fairly impressed with Kauai Red Raider NG Daylin Huni (#53) in the State D2 Finals against Iolani….so he could be a sleeper DT prospect.

To miss on both Lagafuaina and Epenesa hurts, especially if our chances to secure either would have been improved had we gone about recruiting in a different manner, like showing Epenesa with love early and often. How do we not offer that guy his junior year?

I believe ST made it clear Epenesa was not coming to UH even if he was offered while he was in his mother’s womb. Why are we dragging this out?
i don’t understand why these top players leave paradise to go to places like utah, washington, and now south bend. If I was coach mac i would tell the players who don’t sign with UH out of High School(if offered) will be allowed to transfer back after they decide they don’t like it.(Only exception is family emergency)

My memory of Seattle was a wedding I attended and it was so cold I drank eight Starbucks that day. I could not wait to hop on the plane.
Espenesa was quoted as saying that he wasn’t offered by UH until late in the recruiting process, and if they offered him earlier, it would have definitely put UH in the mix…so you never know if Mack and Co and trying to make a last push for him

Let the kids go already. I’ve worked with the football team and seen many kids who were “over recruited”. Like a great salesman can do these kids can be wowed to commit then as time sets in they realize that UH is not where they wanted to go afterall. Makes for an unhappy camper whose heart is just not into it and sometimes results in transfers anyway. The great ones want to be Warriors.

Your blog handle of “Long Time UH Fan” caught my attention back in the January of 2007 when I first was able to gather the courage to post on this blog. I remember venting out my frustration of UH’s so-called “fans” that left in anger and cussed out the team after a valiant losing effort to Oregon State in the prior season. You sir were the first person to respond to me and at that time I posted under “Da Palisades Kid” only to change it to just “Kazz” to avoid confusion.
In the following months leading up to Colt Brennan’s NFL draft/UH senior year return decision, to the gripes of the BCS system in our march to the Sugar Bowl, to Heisman complaints along with Fraizer complaints, to the appointing of a new AD, and the departure of a head coach and all the other Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine conversations in between, I regret not having been able to meet you in person.
Through the madness of all of our tailgates, the ones you were able to join in on and honor us with your presence and your wife’s world-famous lemon mochi, we were just not able to meet. In that I am regretful, but that regret pales in comparison to the honor you have bestowed upon me in viewing me as a die-hard UH fan like as yourself. As someone that has walked the walk and talked the talk of a TRUE GREEN UH FAN such as yourself, that honorable recognition allows me to feel a quiet responsibility on my part of continuing to support our fine young men and women of our university’s athletic programs to the standards of what a REAL “long time UH fan” such as yourself has done in your time with Hawaii Nei in this life.
Aloha Oe to you sir. My life has been better just conversing with you. I wish an eternity of blessings and good fortune upon your loved ones that you have touched every day of your life.

Time to drop this subject. He was not offered earlier because when UH coaches talked to him he said he was not going to UH. ST made it clear he was not going to UH regardless of when an offer was made. In other words, UH was not in the mix and was never going to be in the mix. Sorry for being so blunt but after the past couple of weeks it appears bloggers who are expressing disappointment with some local recruits not going to UH are actually taking swipes at the coaches. No stone is being unturned by the coaches when it comes to local recruiting, but not every stone is going to end up at UH.

one, two, or three more to commit????? hoooooo, this class is looking better everyday and one thing is very noticeable among these young men, they are truly honorable and their commitments are unwavering. Last yr, had sum problems, but looks like the coahcing staff worked on the kinks and did a great job.

Fred Pang (a.k.a. Long Time UH Fan) was one who helped define the character of the blog in early 2007 and hence the Tsai-ko’s as a group. We older ones walked the same grounds he did and lived in the same footsteps. He brought out the best in everyone online, regardless of age.
Fred was buried today. Clipped to his shirt pocket was his Tsai-ko name tag.
Rest in Peace, dear friend and Bonafide Tsai-ko.

Are the coaches holding on to one or two more commits and not saying anything until those commits sign on the dotted line. Um maybe Fehoko or maybe Lagafuaina or maybe Jamora.
Heh can always dream. But something tells me we might be in store for a surprise or two on signing day and I’m thinking the surprise may be a good one. We’ll just have to wait and see.

How many times does it have to be clearly stated? Even a full article by ST about recruiting was written a few days ago which seemed pretty clear how Coach Mac and his staff proceeded with THEIR recruitment in a very deliberate, thorough, and organized manner. They knew about EVERY single HS prospect in the State and most likely have been following their development for quite a long time. They offered scholarships to all the top prospects in the state based on their needs and even offered to those who may not fulfill their needs but because of their athleticism they could find a place for them. The coaches really are not dumb and they really do want many if not all the top local players to stay home and play for the home team. If there are rumours generated stating an athlete was not offered a scholarship early, the coaches probably had their reasons, most likely justified by their research. But we really don’t know the coaches side of the story. Just give them the benefit of the doubt. It’s so hard to comprehend a TOP student/athlete not being offered a scholarship. And if he wasn’t and really wanted to come to UH, he shouldn’t complain about not getting offered but be proactive and approach the coaches himself. BOTTOM LINE, so we don’t drag this any longer…..UH offered all the top local prospects and even if they verballed elsewhere, they continued to pursue them. So don’t worry and rest assured, the coaches did their thing, and more.
Anyway, LOI is almost here. It’ll be exciting to see who finalizes their commitment and become great Warriors. Let’s celebrate the ones who want to become Warriors and not mourn the ones who don’t.
UH player, thanks for posting yesterday. In all honesty, this blog is pretty tame compared to some other college blogs. They brutalize the players and coaches. Take everything with a grain of salt…..I guess you’re one of the great ones…..

Services for Fred went well. Many frenz & family in attendance. Outstanding Tsaiko presence, Blogmeister and many others were there…(in long pants!)
We are naupaulunchowah.. Funny observation made by d-1 about da leffovah food. Every other table had plenty boxes to take home. Our table only had 7 Tsaiko’s. The others had 10. Our platters were empty! Go figure da Tsaiko factor.
We had bradda Al, Pride, Koakane, D-1, and myself. For backup, we had myki and sj. Nobody thought myki would eat that much! Nah!…j/k…
al, like you said, we want the one’s that want to be here and wish the others well…except when we play them! ha! and like pride said, the door will always be open for them to come home if it doesn’t work out. i like the defensive boost this class will bring…and maybe a surprise…i like surprises!

I wear polo’s to school except for Aloha Fridays. Today I wore my black T-shirt. Hey, that thing shrank!
The kids were wondering why the T-shirt and what a “t-say-ko” is. Lots of questions. Anyhow, once they understood they were willing to observe a moment of silence for LTUHF. Interestingly, in just about every class one-by-one the kids rose to stand and pay their respects to a man they would never know. They have a little better understanding and concept of friendship, loyalty and respect.
Not exactly in my lesson plans but it was important not just to me but to the kids to learn about humanity and the value of life. Thank you to LTUHF for the valuable learning opportunity for my students!

Wow, the news about the Pro Bowl wasn’t good for Hawaii.
Highest TV ratings in 10 years (40% higher than last year)
Most people attending a Pro Bowl in 50 years (plus, they had luxury boxes and premium seats to really make a lot more money)
Significantly lower travel expenses
At least Hawaii gets the next 2 Pro Bowls and can get the players to try to lobby for the game to be in Hawaii. Hopefully none of the players will have problems with the Aloha Stadium turf that is overdue for replacement.

Arkansas had a top-rated kicker as a commit…but he took a recruiting visit to Austin over the weekend and switched his commit to Texas. Then Arkansas quickly made a phone call to Hocker and offered him, and Hocker switched away from UH without even visiting Arkansas.
Sad how the recruiting dominoes fell on that…if the kicker kept his long-time commit to Arkansas, UH would have kept Hocker.

Planny defensive guys on the list…glad the defense going have some mean killahs for the next couple years. Wassup with Iosefa, Manu, Malepeai, Alofipo, etc…from previous recruiting classes??? Would be nice to see all the boys strapping it up ready for pound and knock heads. Planny bangaz to choose from for the defensive front seven and hopefully our young secondary is ready to take it to the next level. Pretty exciting with all this last minute suspense before signing day…
A House, you worried about LOI signing???? Not me, like I said, this year’s group of recruits are true warriors, they want to be warriors, and they have great integrety and will honor their word.
Like I said in December, am pretty satisfied with the commits they have and whatever we get in Jan is additional helpings. To me, so what if we don’t get those “highly rated” players. Like the song says, “Ain’t no big thing brudda, things are looking up”. For those who got scholies at other schools, my congrats to you and your family and my best to you on your next adventure in life. i like the WAC schools getting aggresive in their recruiting to upgrade and most are going head to head with the “biggies” and getting their recruit.

Good vibes on Sampson from Florida where they have a lot of good football players. Saw his tape and if he has a crease he’s gone and he has great change of direction and acceleration. I can see him being the first team kickoff and punt returner from the get go. If his hs stats are just as good in returning kicks at Hawaii he’ll be an All American. I think we got a real good one. Great find. How did we find him? Or should I say how did he find us?

Saw your post last night/early morning. What I noticed is that the softball, baseball, and men’s volleyball schedules don’t “overlap” each other as much as they did last season.
kazz, know gil is a bonus, but my gut feeling is that this upcoming season, wvb will surpass last yr’s performance.

Will Russ (that higher rated kicker) was committed to Arkansas for a long time, but took a recruiting visit to Texas this past weekend. Texas offered a scholarship (they had a scholarship just become available because one current player was arrested and kicked off the team) a few days ago and he accepted over the weekend.
Arkansas then put out an emergency call to Hocker and offered him a scholarship Saturday night or yesterday…it is really bad luck that a highly rated kicker broke his commit to Arkansas and there was another highly rated kicker in Arkansas who they could take. Given a choice between playing for Hawaii or playing in front of family in Arkansas, Hocker chose to stay home.
Cooper Pelluer would be a big loss…but doesn’t UH get one phone call during this dead period? It might not be over. For all we know he could wake up tomorrow morning and feel like going to UH.

Al, It was stated somewhere on Ark St board that his friend said he was using us for a vacation because his family has always wanted to go to Hawaii. But he was going to Ark St. So if anything, Ark St got screwed because we never had a shot according to that guy. And seemed believable.

I wish. Checked ticket prices but . . . whew. I guess I will just have to cheer for some of the world’s best athletes from the comfort of my recliner.
The State of Hawai’i was ranked 2nd in prettiest women and 2nd in happiness. Heck, I guess that makes sense. If I could see pretty women all the time I would be happy, too.
I am sure there are a few pretty women up here but they are usually covered up with jackets, hats, gloves, boots, . . . While in Hawai’i they are barely covered up with T-shirts, shorts, bathing suits, . . . No wonder Washington is ranked 36th for pretty women. Do the recruits really know what they are going to miss?

Elvis Matagi, who got an offer from UH yesterday, is from Kekaulike High School. He’s currently committed to Utah State, but his commit must not be too solid because he went to Utah on a recruiting trip over the weekend.
Matagi also got a scholarship offer from UNLV, so he’s definitely an example of a neighbor island recruit who has the attention of D-IA coaches.

Good call about wearing the Tsaiko shirts yesterday to LTUHF’s memorial. Lorna and his daughter, Melanie, were very appreciative whenever they were able to identify one of us because of the shirt.
Hawaii football was a big part of their family’s experience together and they related how much Fred enjoyed sharing that with his Tsaiko family, too.
Big Mahalo to Lorna and the family for hosting us at a great lunch and appreciate the green bottles so we could offer one last toast to a terrific LongTimeUHFan. 🙂

You are obviously going head to head with a few BCS schools for athletes. How would recruiting be affected if we were to double your budget? In other words where would you put the added money to use?

We have a lot of football alumni like yourself who are living in different areas on the mainland and throughout the state of Hawaii. How can these alumni be a source of information for you and the coaching staff without violating NCAA rules?

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
