UH lands speedy receiver

Allen Sampson, a receiver/kick returner from Plant High (Tampa, Fla.) told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors.

“I know a lot of people go to Hawai‘i for the scenery and weather, but I fell in love with the program,” Sampson said.

Sampson, who is 5 feet 8 and 155 pounds, said he can run 40 yards in 4.38 seconds. A scout timed him at 4.39 seconds.

Last season, he caught 56 passes for 867 yards and 11 touchdowns. He averaged 31.6 yards per kickoff return and 14.18 yards per punt return .

Plant is a two-time state champion.

The thing about  a last memory is it becomes a lasting memory.

UH’s season-ending loss to Wisconsin was bad, but it was magnified because it reminded many of the season-ending losses to Notre Dame and Georgia.

With months to stew, Warrior fans sought hopeful news that was supposed to be supplied through recruiting. But because  most of the 2010 recruiting class was formed in the summer of 2009, there were fewer available scholarships for December and January. It also left UH fans wondering if the Warriors were being left behind with the recent news of local players making Mainland plans.

Pass rusher Beau Yap’s commitment provided a much-needed boost for the Warriors and their fans. It also served as a reminder that the Warriors have a potentially good recruiting class, which should get even better when the last few commitments are announced before Wednesday’s signing date.

The overall quality of this class won’t be known for a few years. But, for now, the Warrior fans have another reason to look forward  to the start of the 2010 season rather than to the end of the 2009 season.

When this blog started, Wena used to watch me typing away at all hours. She called the blog readers my “imaginary friends.”

And to casual visitors of the blog, they would appear to be that way.

Da Punchbowl Kid. Gigi. Jason. James. Al. Darren. …

But as the months went on, I had the chance to meet many of the bloggers in person. We ate together. We sang together. And we chatted. Often about UH football, but mostly about what matters to all of us: friendship, family and food.

Our blog readers are real people with real jobs and real lives. The Mayor even said he’s a lurker.

And somehow my imaginary friends became a real family.

Today, we say goodbye to one our loyal bloggers — Long Time UH Fan.

Fred Pang was a wonderful man with a great family. I remember when I delivered a prize to his house. Fred and his wife kept trying to give me a bag of goodies. I kept saying “no,” they kept insisting. When I got home, Wena asked: “Why are you coming home with more stuff than you left with?” That’s the thing about this blog. My contribution pales in comparison to what the readers offer.

We’ll always miss you, Fred.

Enjoy your final journey and thank you for sharing your roots with us.
Growing up across the ‘stream’ from you and sharing our common experiences we both had in hells half acre and surrounding play grounds reminds me that we are never alone in life experiences. I am happy to say you have been a Brother and Warrior to all of us.
Thank you for the memories and peace be with you, Mrs. LTUHF and your extended Ohana who will miss you as we Tsaikos will miss you too.

I like how Coach Mack recognizes hard work. and “attitude.”

last year, I had the good fortune to go to the lower field, hang in the parking garage, and watch the lights come on in the coaches’ offices.
did that a few times, matter of fact.

and guess who I saw coming in, turning on the lights, at 5:00 a.m., everytime?

Thats right. Coach Aranda. And he wasn’t reading the paper.

Yup, I’m getting comfortable in the hoping department.

From a previous gathering of Tsaikos at the Stan Sheriff Center,

Tsaiko Culture, what is this Tsaiko Culture?

This thing we call Tsaiko Culture as an anomaly, an enigma if you will. It is not just a blog, it is not just people writing about UH Warrior Football, it is not about telling jokes, it is not about trading recipes, it is not about going to a Tail gate, it is not about singing karaoke, it is not about going bowling, it is not about going to the movies, it is not about helping worthy causes, it is not about traveling across the United States to cheer for the Warriors at New Orleans…it is more, it is bigger than that, it is bigger than life itself.

In no way, form or manner, did Stephen Tsai ever imagine that one day, he would be standing in the Stan Sheriff Arena, in the Wong Hospitality room surrounded by a group of maniacal Warrior foot ball fans…. No way.
So, what is this Tsaiko Culture? For Kekoa, his Hawaiian flag that he carried with him to New Orleans, he took it everywhere with him and whenever the photo opportunity presented itself, he proudly displayed his Hawaiian Flag; his flag was his shield of faith he took into battle. But it’s more than just a flag, it represents everything we stand for.

A Tsaiko once told me, ‘I never thought at my age, I’d still be making friends, and not just friends, but really good friends…’ No, DPK did not tell me that, but think about that, that says so much about this group of people called Tsaikos. We welcome all into our group, the passion we have for our Warrior Football Team is the thread that weaves through all of us that brings us together like a sweater. Like one of those Bill Cosby sweaters, you know, very warm, cuddly, like a security blanket with sleeves.

The Tsaiko culture has evolved into an entity that no one had any inkling of. We have our benchmarks, you know, what we consider ‘cornerstones’ of the group, where a certain item or event is entrenched in our memories forever. Just look at the memorabilia that everyone brought tonight….incredible. We could talk for hours about Gigi’s muumuus, Homey’s forearms, Homey singing to Elvis Pressley, Homey’s pretty hair, hey wait a minute, that’s enough about Homey. Then there is ST’s world famous rendition of ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’, which is mind boggling. James singing about his horse with no name, addahknowjoe belting out about his American Woman, Stretch going Sailing, Lyn showing off her boots, Esme being a Heartbreaker, Pride bringing out the cole porter in all of us, Jason crooning love ballads to his auntys, DPK upsetting Donald Duck, Wreck being a gigolo, Steve M. aka VITO, VITO, VITO, Liz K. bringing the phantoms out of the Opera for us, and Kekaula bringing it home with Kanaka WaiWai.

Or how about our mainland counterparts, Rich2176, Ronnie, Garret, WA fan, Las Vegas…they never stop to amaze me. Our outer island ohana including Whitey and Duffer from Maui, these 2 guys are the mayors of Maui, with their office located in the back right corner of Tiffanys in Wailuku. If you want to know about what is going on in Maui, they are more hooked up than you would want to know.
On Kauai, Aunty Liz…she holds down the Garden Isle for the Tsaikos. On the Big Island, let’s see, could it be Big Hilo Fan? Not only is this guy funny, but almost pretty smart too. For an attorney, he is pretty likeable, I don’t care what DPK says.
The common thing is the Warrior Beat, and every day, day in and day out, ST brings out another story line, and the banter begins. True, we might go off topic just a little some times, I still don’t know what kim chee soup, and mabo tofu have in common with Warrior Football, but hey, we always come full circle, and bring it back.

Tsaiko Culture, to sum it up, it is a feeling, it’s not the shirts, the glasses, the banners, those are just what I would say are memorial stones…to signify an event or a moment. Much like the stones that God had Joshua place in the River Jordan as Joshua led the Israelites to the Promised Land, these items are our memorial stones.

The real Tsaiko culture lives in all of us…it is that warm and fuzzy feeling we get when we open the blog and see a familiar name, it’s that feeling we get when we’re laughing by ourselves at work or home when we read a good joke from Las Vegas, it’s that tugging at our heart and the tears from our eyes when we read about one of our fellow Tsaikos going through a tough time, it’s that heart throbbing ache when one of the Tsaikos has lost a loved one…..like I always say….make memories, make memories, make memories. When I say what are the 5 F’s….football, food, family, friends, fun, and soon to be the 6th F….FISHING…..haha.

I thank all of you for being who you are, I thank our committee members and organizers, I thank ST for his tireless efforts, and I thank Akua for watching over all of us. We are and will be forever more…THE TSAI-KOS

  14. bighilofan2 February 1, 2010 7:01 am

whoa… i had to get my glasses for that one. 😀

and I needed to be reminded that the world has good people and not only mean spirited and/or fraudulent people. unfortunately, i deal with many who i would categorize in this latter group. which is one of the reasons why I am glad to have people like LizK around, to remind me not to live my life in the negative.

    Aloha again, LTUH Fan.

  15. whitey February 1, 2010 7:02 am

Mrs. LTUHF I won’t be attending Fred’s service, I have attended the last service I ever will back in May of this year. But believe me I will be offering up my prayers for you and your Ohana.

    Bulla very well put.

  19. Bulla February 1, 2010 7:12 am

the whole world is rooting for New Orleans. almost.

i think Peyton Manning is just tooooo good. plus, he was really funny on SNL. and he got enough skill players on both sides of the ball.

thats what it comes down to, really skilled players. and attitude. and belief in yourself and your teammates.

gotta go. hi ho hi ho.

  22. SteveM February 1, 2010 7:32 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Welcome to Beau Yap!

    Good Morning Gangeez.

“When a great man dies, for years the light he leaves behind him, lies on the paths of men.”
    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

May the Lord Bless and Keep you always, Fred. Thank you for the light you have left in out hearts and on our paths. Rest in Peace , brother.

  24. postmanke February 1, 2010 7:35 am

Mack is starting to have a knack for local recruits having second thoughts and securing away the commitment. When I looked at Ferds ranking yesterday I was really surprised to see Yap had a commitment to Baylor, which pissed me off and triggered my negative post on recruiting. (thoughts are still reserved on the head coach.) Of all the top recruits, Yap has the enormous potential to make the most out of his career with the Warriors. During and after is playing days at UH. No doubt will he be a star. Great fit, solid choice! Looking into the future, he wont have a second guessing bone in his body! Right on Stant! – If he could be in charge of local recruiting, we’d be done recruiting for the year already.

Mack the Rescinder! – Secure em earlier though, stop making everybody stress! Who’s next!

  25. jm2375 February 1, 2010 7:35 am

    Good morning!

    ST – great post.
    LTUHF – we’ll miss you.
    Bulla – well said.

BTW, is there an APB out on Homey?

  26. Da Punchbowl Kid February 1, 2010 7:43 am

Ya know, when I read that list yesterday, I wanted to say that I thought Beau Yap should have been at least a top ten or possibly top five recruit.

But if I had said that, folks might have accused me of favoritism because I am a Kamehameha graduate. So I didn’t say anything at the time.

Judging by the reaction on the blog here, its obvious that many here consider him one of the “big ones”. In any case, its wonderful news that he will be a Warrior!

    Nuff said. 🙂

  27. Da Punchbowl Kid February 1, 2010 7:47 am

To the remaining “big ones” sitting on that recruiting fence, can you feel the love? I’m sure Beau Yap and his family are feeling it. 😉

We need you guys. Stay home! 🙂

  28. SteveM February 1, 2010 7:53 am

…and farewell to a grand gentleman today. Must remember to hydrate this morning. I admit all the water I am losing from my eyes is not from hay fever. A grand gentleman.

To the Tsai-kos who are able to attend today’s service, Mrs. LTUHF has posted that “Tsai-ko black” attire is acceptable.

Hawaiian Memorial Park main chapel. 1030 viewing/visitation. Service at 1130.

  29. Da Punchbowl Kid February 1, 2010 7:55 am

    Stephen-

You need to save this morning’s post in “The best of the Warrior Beat” file.

  30. (Jesse) James February 1, 2010 7:59 am

    Good morning Tsaikos…

Welcome Beau Yap…things are looking up for the Warriors.

Very nice forward ST…and great to read that again Bulla.

Mrs. LTUHF…I too will not be able to attend Fred’s services today but my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. We will miss Fred dearly but that cannot describe the loss you must be feeling at the moment. Just try to remember that he is pain free where he is at now…and can watch all the Warrior sports from the best seats in the house. Much love to you and your family.

  31. Yoda February 1, 2010 8:23 am

Yap realized he did not want to live in Waco, TX even if it’s for College, glad he is staying home to continue being a “Warrior”

  32. addahknowjoe February 1, 2010 8:23 am

    Gmorning gang!

    Pau nuha.

ST- Such poignant words in memory of LTUHF. Mahalo.

I can’t make the services today but I’ll have my T-Blacks on at work in memory of LTUHF.

Fred- you will always be with us all.

  33. BG February 1, 2010 8:27 am

Fred…thank you for all that you brought here. You gave of yourself so freely. You are sorely missed.

  34. Bulla February 1, 2010 8:31 am

    A-Joe,

mahalo for my T-Black shirt…. i was looking at it last night and remembering all the memories from the past couple of years…….whew, unreal……..just unreal.

hope you have a good day…… i have an idea for our next CC or event, we keep an open chair for Fred, or any other Tsaiko that can no longer be with us except in the spirit…….to honor them.

    GO WARRIORS!

  35. Old Diver February 1, 2010 8:31 am

Not going hard after Beau Yap would have been as big a mistake as not going after another player of the year in 1982 Kurt Gouveia. That was a huge mistake Coach Tomey made and one Coach Mack didn’t.

  36. BG February 1, 2010 8:35 am

    Bulla

I believe those words are posted at the entrance to our vitual clubhouse. Each time I read it, I marvel at the way you painted the Tsaiko picture…each word carefully chosen like a brush stroke in a piece of magnificent art! It is a legacy for Tsaikos everywhere. Mahalo

  37. Willie February 1, 2010 8:38 am

Great to hear you will become a Warrior Beau! Looking forward to you wrecking havoc on “D” ala the Noga’s and my all time favorite Levi Stanley.

I recall Robert Keakaula saying you are the class of the recruiting class this year with your non-stop motor & quickness.

Someone mentioned during that mud slinging blog session, where there was a “timeout” given, that one of those on that “recruiting genius’ list of local boys lost” would sign with the Warriors. I can’t remember who you were, but you were right on and I thank you for this call and the positive vibes.

  38. Tombo Ahi February 1, 2010 8:39 am

    RIP LTUHF

  39. Da Punchbowl Kid February 1, 2010 8:39 am

    Mrs. LTUH,

Regretably, work commitments will keep me from attending today’s service for Fred. Sweety and I wish you and yours all the best this day. May the Lord be with you always.

  40. Da Punchbowl Kid February 1, 2010 8:40 am

    Howzit Tombo!

    Rest in Peace Mr. Pang.

  42. tom-warriornation February 1, 2010 8:54 am

Welcome Beau Yap; the entire Warrior Nation thanks you for choosing to become a Warrior and filling our badly needed pass-rushing & run-stopping!

Hopefully we will get good news that your fellow high school standouts will join you as a Warrior!

  43. Bulla February 1, 2010 8:56 am

    BG – too kind, only a vessel…..

Old Diver – i agree, but i think we’re turning this ship around, like Pride has said, ‘it’s an attitude…’

Yoda – whew, Waco Texas……..almost as bad as Lubbock…haha

    ST- thanks for reminding us!

Bulla- one of my favorite speeches of all time.

    Bulla #35

I had just wanted to stop by for a quick visit (“lurker quckie”???), but had to post for LTUHF. And then Bulla’s Tsaiko Charter brought back a rush of incredible memories.

A-Joe (and Sports). Have provided unique distinction for Tsaikos. Among the privileged who have Tsaiko insignia on their vehicles, who have not had that moment of pride when someone taps you on the shoulder and asks, “Hey, that’s really cool, where did you get it?” And that’s only a small piece of all the contributions they’ve made.

Just the other night when everyone was already asleep, I was tired from hours of reading and wanting a nightcap before bed. Beer was too much liquid, so I decided on a shot of single malt scotch which I love, but rarely partake in. Went over to the hutch and picked out my special Tsaiko shot glass that was a gift from Stretch. It occupies a place of honor next to my Tsaiko beer mug.(made by Stretch). Everyone in my family knows these items are off limits. I sat at my desk and savored the relaxing warmness of Tsaiko memories (and scotch!). Really slept well after that.

  47. Derek February 1, 2010 9:13 am

The foundation for a championship team is defense. I’m glad UH has tried to address the defensive side of the ball by trying to add beef, strength, and speed to improve stopping the run. Now we need Jeremy Ioane to help us solidify the back end and improve the pass coverage and run tackling ability. I believe our offense will move the ball and score some points. Based on last year, we need to focus on being more efficient in the red zone and better percentage on field goals. Either that or we need to score from farther out by making longer TD passes. I’m still a little concerned w/ depth on the OL and I still feel we need a tank of a running back on short yardage situations to pick up valuable first downs. Do we have somebody in the program to fit the bill? I would love to see the spring depth chart. The strength of the team will obviously be the receiving corps. Give a lot of reps to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th string receivers to build for the future. We know what Salas, Lane, Pollard, Taylor, etc. can do. Bradley will be back in the fall. We should be thinking about and preparing for USC already. Win that and it will give the team confidence going on the road at Army and Colorado the following 2 weeks. Welcome to all the new recruits who will be Warriors.

  48. al February 1, 2010 9:41 am

zack hocker, k, went home and made a new committment.

he will play for the arkansas razorbacks.

    Mrs. LTUH,

Condolences to LTUHF’s family. I did not know him but I know he was a great man. Just look at what his passing did on this blog. It brings out memories, good feelings, eloquent thoughts on paper and a few tears.
I wish that when my time comes, I will be remembered with the same reverence as displayed on this day.
Job well done. Aloha, Mr. LTUHF.

  52. mctruck February 1, 2010 10:13 am

There surely is a rain-“Beau” over UH these days, and keeping my fingers crossed for many more on the horizon.

    Mahalo plenty, Beau Yap.

Just wanted to take this moment to thank, (al), for all of them updates….much appreciated.

  54. mctruck February 1, 2010 10:24 am

Being situated in Texas, I never got to know LTUHF,(Fred Pang) in person, and I am at a loss for words to comfort Mrs. Pang, except to say that I felt like I knew him first hand from his blogs…so, my condolences, Mrs. Pang.
I will miss his presence on this blog site, and it goes without saying, a part of me left with, LTUHF. Peace, brother.

    Mrs. LTUHF,

My condolences for the loss of good man. I did not know Mr. Long time, but his posts, no matter what he wrote about, always showed that the writing came from a good, decent man. May he rest in peace and may and God Bless You and the ohana.

    Very nice service.

Like Bulla says, “Make memories, make memories, make memories.”

  63. lava February 1, 2010 12:30 pm

Al, if we don’t have a reliable kicker, I think we should go for it — 4th downs and two point conversions. Maybe we set the record for fewest field goal attempts. Most points scored would be an even better record.

    Lagafuaina commits to Washington.

Lagafuaina goes 360 in a day

A night’s sleep changed everything for Lawrence Lagafuaina, a 6-foot-2, 310-pound defensive tackle from ‘Aiea, Hawai’i. But the reality for the long-time Washington commit was, despite two commitments to two schools in the span of 24 hours, it didn’t change anything at all.

“I’m just calling to let you know that I’m going to be a Dawg,” Lagafuaina told Scout.com Monday afternoon. “I know where I want to go.”

Lagafuaina took one last official visit, to Hawai’i this past weekend, and the Warriors made a huge impression on him.

“I was thinking last night (Sunday) about UH, and I actually told the coaches that I was going to go to UH,” he said. “I talked to my Mom about it last night and she told me to sleep on it and then decide when I wake up.”

Apparently Lagafuaina’s dreams were shrouded in purple and gold, because he woke up thinking about the team he originally committed to. “I just like U-Dub,” he said. “I know it’s where I belong, I know it’s where I should be.”

My condolences to the Pang family….I didn’t personally know Fred but I’ve “seen” him often enough while lurking that I feel that I know him…he definitely will be missed….

  66. kapakahi February 1, 2010 1:18 pm

Now that UH lost out on it’s late push for Epenesa….and Lagafuaina apparently confirmed his committed to UW….but JMHO that it can’t hurt UH to make one last recruiting push for Sani Fuimaono (Punahou) and/or Foi Foi (Kapolei)…..since UH still needs to maintain depth at DT…..’cuz IMHO not many DL prospects (other than Koa Ka’ai) in next year’s local Class of 2011….when you consider that the top OIA teams (Kahuku, Farrington, Leilehua) and top ILH teams (Kamehameha-0ahu, Saint Louis, Iolani, Punahou) graduate most of their respective starting Dlines.

Having said that….I was fairly impressed with Kauai Red Raider NG Daylin Huni (#53) in the State D2 Finals against Iolani….so he could be a sleeper DT prospect.

  67. kama krab February 1, 2010 1:28 pm

    Eh you never know,

Lawrence may go to sleep tomorrow and have nice dreams about being in green. You just never know. Don’t count him out until he actually signs on wednesday. Look what happen with Beau.

No need to start pushing the panic button cause come wednesday all the dust will settle and we will have the real Warriors standing.

  68. Derek February 1, 2010 1:30 pm

Mr. Lagafuaina. Sleep on it and then decide when you wake up tomorrow. You might dream about a beautiful Rainbow…..oops we’re Warriors. I hope you don’t get home sick and can stand the gray clouds and all the rain. I’m telling you..there ain’t much sun in Seattle except in the summer and early fall. I’ve been there. Nice place to visit though, but it’s not home. I hope you like the cold weather. I don’t. Anyway, good luck to you and we’ll just kick your butt in Seattle next year in September. Just a little tidbit..if memory serves me, Seattle is way up there in the incidents of suicide because the place is so dreary and there is not much sun and it’s not a cheery atmosphere. That’s why a lot of people stay inside a lot and they drink a lot of coffee…thus Starbucks who originated in Seattle. Again, best of luck to you, Mr. Lagafuaina!

  69. lava February 1, 2010 1:31 pm

To miss on both Lagafuaina and Epenesa hurts, especially if our chances to secure either would have been improved had we gone about recruiting in a different manner, like showing Epenesa with love early and often. How do we not offer that guy his junior year?

Well, how many spots left to fill this year?

  70. kama krab February 1, 2010 1:32 pm

    To the Pang Ohana,

May the grace of god be with you all and just know that Fred Pang is now in a very beautiful place called heaven. He will have a front row seat for all U.H. games from here on out and will be cheering his head off.

    God bless

  72. Yoda February 1, 2010 1:59 pm

Epenesa – 315 lbs, inside beef, run stopper.
Lagafuaina – 310 lbs, inside beef, run stopper.
Shwenke – DE – elite pass rusher
Jamora – DE – elite pass rusher

Quality Defensive linemen are hard to come by, “Warriors recruiters” need to find a way to keep local products like above list home!

  73. Old Diver February 1, 2010 1:59 pm

I believe ST made it clear Epenesa was not coming to UH even if he was offered while he was in his mother’s womb. Why are we dragging this out?

  74. Neil February 1, 2010 2:13 pm

i don’t understand why these top players leave paradise to go to places like utah, washington, and now south bend. If I was coach mac i would tell the players who don’t sign with UH out of High School(if offered) will be allowed to transfer back after they decide they don’t like it.(Only exception is family emergency)

    STAY IN HAWAII

  75. RichfromOC February 1, 2010 2:21 pm

My memory of Seattle was a wedding I attended and it was so cold I drank eight Starbucks that day. I could not wait to hop on the plane.

  76. Poi Pounder February 1, 2010 2:25 pm

Espenesa was quoted as saying that he wasn’t offered by UH until late in the recruiting process, and if they offered him earlier, it would have definitely put UH in the mix…so you never know if Mack and Co and trying to make a last push for him

  77. tommui February 1, 2010 2:35 pm

I think that LTUHF and I were the oldest in this Blog.

And thank you for Fred. Thank you Mrs LTUHF for allowing us to pay our respects to Fred by wearing the black Tsaiko shirts at his service.

Passed on to Mike Weirs and Kelvin Shoji our concerns about the SS at Stan Sheriff

  80. Windward February 1, 2010 2:50 pm

Let the kids go already. I’ve worked with the football team and seen many kids who were “over recruited”. Like a great salesman can do these kids can be wowed to commit then as time sets in they realize that UH is not where they wanted to go afterall. Makes for an unhappy camper whose heart is just not into it and sometimes results in transfers anyway. The great ones want to be Warriors.

  81. cheepono February 1, 2010 3:11 pm

    welcome to the ohana sampson!

    Go Warriors!

    robert marve.

imagine if he came to hawaii. wouldn’t have gotten into all that trouble in miami. where’d he end up transferring to?

  85. Kazz February 1, 2010 3:20 pm

    Aloha Mr. Fred Pang,

Your blog handle of “Long Time UH Fan” caught my attention back in the January of 2007 when I first was able to gather the courage to post on this blog. I remember venting out my frustration of UH’s so-called “fans” that left in anger and cussed out the team after a valiant losing effort to Oregon State in the prior season. You sir were the first person to respond to me and at that time I posted under “Da Palisades Kid” only to change it to just “Kazz” to avoid confusion.

In the following months leading up to Colt Brennan’s NFL draft/UH senior year return decision, to the gripes of the BCS system in our march to the Sugar Bowl, to Heisman complaints along with Fraizer complaints, to the appointing of a new AD, and the departure of a head coach and all the other Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine conversations in between, I regret not having been able to meet you in person.

Through the madness of all of our tailgates, the ones you were able to join in on and honor us with your presence and your wife’s world-famous lemon mochi, we were just not able to meet. In that I am regretful, but that regret pales in comparison to the honor you have bestowed upon me in viewing me as a die-hard UH fan like as yourself. As someone that has walked the walk and talked the talk of a TRUE GREEN UH FAN such as yourself, that honorable recognition allows me to feel a quiet responsibility on my part of continuing to support our fine young men and women of our university’s athletic programs to the standards of what a REAL “long time UH fan” such as yourself has done in your time with Hawaii Nei in this life.

Aloha Oe to you sir. My life has been better just conversing with you. I wish an eternity of blessings and good fortune upon your loved ones that you have touched every day of your life.

“May the wind always be at your back and the sun upon your face, so that He may take you aloft to forever dance with the stars.”

    Mahalo,
    “Kazz”

  86. whitey February 1, 2010 3:21 pm

sampson’s team won their 2nd state 4A title and it looks like he had 5 offers with Syracuse at the top.

  87. Old Diver February 1, 2010 3:22 pm

    Regarding # 76

Time to drop this subject. He was not offered earlier because when UH coaches talked to him he said he was not going to UH. ST made it clear he was not going to UH regardless of when an offer was made. In other words, UH was not in the mix and was never going to be in the mix. Sorry for being so blunt but after the past couple of weeks it appears bloggers who are expressing disappointment with some local recruits not going to UH are actually taking swipes at the coaches. No stone is being unturned by the coaches when it comes to local recruiting, but not every stone is going to end up at UH.

  88. whitey February 1, 2010 3:25 pm

cheepono, thanks. guess lightning can strike in the same place and this guy has speed like lightning.

  89. whitey February 1, 2010 3:29 pm

one, two, or three more to commit????? hoooooo, this class is looking better everyday and one thing is very noticeable among these young men, they are truly honorable and their commitments are unwavering. Last yr, had sum problems, but looks like the coahcing staff worked on the kinks and did a great job.

    Hi, everyone!

A good day albeit a bit subdued earlier this afternoon. And, rightfully so.

LTUHF, Dad, Mrs. Pomai, and, I am sure, a bunch of other UH fans decked out in Warrior Green tapa robes. Whoo-hoo!!! Look for more rainbows on game days!!!

  93. al February 1, 2010 3:50 pm

haka….gotta hope that taylor can get back that extra year otherwise, he is done playing for hawaii.

  94. protector February 1, 2010 3:50 pm

Welcome and Mahalo to Allen Sampson for being our newest Warrior! I just know that some will devalue him because of his height, but if he has the heart of a Warrior, who cares. Also, Speed Kills!! He might even be able to contribute immediately in terms of returning kicks & punts.

    re: recruiting

I think it’s a pretty good crop & I agree with what ‘whitey’ said. And any more recruits we land is icing on the cake.

  95. wafan February 1, 2010 3:51 pm

Welcome new Warrior Sampson!!! Just about as far away from Florida as anyone can get and still be in the USA.

  96. kama krab February 1, 2010 4:00 pm

    Alright Braddah Allen Sampson,

Mahalo much for being one Warrior. Hope to see you ripping off some 100 yard kick returns TO THE HOUSE. Oh and wouldn’t mind seeing you catch some bombs to the house.

  97. SteveM February 1, 2010 4:04 pm

Fred Pang (a.k.a. Long Time UH Fan) was one who helped define the character of the blog in early 2007 and hence the Tsai-ko’s as a group. We older ones walked the same grounds he did and lived in the same footsteps. He brought out the best in everyone online, regardless of age.

Fred was buried today. Clipped to his shirt pocket was his Tsai-ko name tag.

Rest in Peace, dear friend and Bonafide Tsai-ko.

    😥

  98. kama krab February 1, 2010 4:06 pm

So with one full day left until signing day,

Are the coaches holding on to one or two more commits and not saying anything until those commits sign on the dotted line. Um maybe Fehoko or maybe Lagafuaina or maybe Jamora.

Heh can always dream. But something tells me we might be in store for a surprise or two on signing day and I’m thinking the surprise may be a good one. We’ll just have to wait and see.

  104. Hoohiki February 1, 2010 4:14 pm

“The great ones want to be Warriors.” (Windward)

How many times does it have to be clearly stated? Even a full article by ST about recruiting was written a few days ago which seemed pretty clear how Coach Mac and his staff proceeded with THEIR recruitment in a very deliberate, thorough, and organized manner. They knew about EVERY single HS prospect in the State and most likely have been following their development for quite a long time. They offered scholarships to all the top prospects in the state based on their needs and even offered to those who may not fulfill their needs but because of their athleticism they could find a place for them. The coaches really are not dumb and they really do want many if not all the top local players to stay home and play for the home team. If there are rumours generated stating an athlete was not offered a scholarship early, the coaches probably had their reasons, most likely justified by their research. But we really don’t know the coaches side of the story. Just give them the benefit of the doubt. It’s so hard to comprehend a TOP student/athlete not being offered a scholarship. And if he wasn’t and really wanted to come to UH, he shouldn’t complain about not getting offered but be proactive and approach the coaches himself. BOTTOM LINE, so we don’t drag this any longer…..UH offered all the top local prospects and even if they verballed elsewhere, they continued to pursue them. So don’t worry and rest assured, the coaches did their thing, and more.

Anyway, LOI is almost here. It’ll be exciting to see who finalizes their commitment and become great Warriors. Let’s celebrate the ones who want to become Warriors and not mourn the ones who don’t.

UH player, thanks for posting yesterday. In all honesty, this blog is pretty tame compared to some other college blogs. They brutalize the players and coaches. Take everything with a grain of salt…..I guess you’re one of the great ones…..

I’m gonna miss LTUH..and his posts, which were always so positive, even with his critiques. Rest in peace…

  105. Kekoa (iPhone) February 1, 2010 4:16 pm

Services for Fred went well. Many frenz & family in attendance. Outstanding Tsaiko presence, Blogmeister and many others were there…(in long pants!)

We are naupaulunchowah.. Funny observation made by d-1 about da leffovah food. Every other table had plenty boxes to take home. Our table only had 7 Tsaiko’s. The others had 10. Our platters were empty! Go figure da Tsaiko factor.

We had bradda Al, Pride, Koakane, D-1, and myself. For backup, we had myki and sj. Nobody thought myki would eat that much! Nah!…j/k…

  106. haka February 1, 2010 4:18 pm

al, like you said, we want the one’s that want to be here and wish the others well…except when we play them! ha! and like pride said, the door will always be open for them to come home if it doesn’t work out. i like the defensive boost this class will bring…and maybe a surprise…i like surprises!

  107. madeinhawaii February 1, 2010 4:23 pm

Hmm.. Sampson’s QB looked pretty good too.

    Welcome new WARRIOR SAMPSON!!

  108. Coach Jake February 1, 2010 4:26 pm

If Sampson does sign, it will be huge. This kid could have an impact on special teams right away and will be a big play threat at receiver in a couple of years.

  109. Justin February 1, 2010 4:28 pm

Awesome get, anyone know if Sampson had any previous connections to Hawaii? He’ll be starting at slot in 2011.

  110. lava February 1, 2010 4:40 pm

Trivia question — who is the last player 5’8″ or less, and 160 pounds or less (Sampson’s measurements), to be an impact football player for Hawaii?

  111. kama krab February 1, 2010 4:49 pm

    Chad “Mighty Mouse” Owens

    I think anyways

  112. kama krab February 1, 2010 4:51 pm

    So Al #103,

    Your saying Lagafuaina is gone?

  113. kapakahi February 1, 2010 4:53 pm

    Great Pick-up!!!

However, I’m still hopeful that UH is looking to make a recruiting connection at Crenshaw HS Cougars….with SB Geno Hall (#14)….LA Times CIF City Section POY (for both Offense & Defense).
    http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-spw-al … 733.column
    http://recruiting.scout.com/2/929007.html

Check out Geno’s video interview….where he mentions being recruited by UH….
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dA6gLoSV4M

Hopefully the Warriors can re-establish a recruiting connection (if not for Signing Class of 2010; definitely for next Signing Class of 2011) with the Crenshaw (a perennial LA City Section power & alma mater for solid former Warriors Solomon & Abe Elimimian)…..since there is a definite Hawaii connection with former UH players Doe Henderson & Abe Elimimian on the coaching staff there.

  117. LizKauai m/ February 1, 2010 5:01 pm

Ok. I was ok until I got to #97… now I have something wrong with my eyes (sniff, wipe)…

Harry Greenwood’s wife was very gracious when I explained why I was wearing my Tsai-ko shirt to her husband’s service (which happened simultaneously with Fred’s). I really did feel like I had been in two places at once.
    God Bless!

  121. Da Punchbowl Kid February 1, 2010 5:25 pm

  122. wafan February 1, 2010 5:40 pm

I wear polo’s to school except for Aloha Fridays. Today I wore my black T-shirt. Hey, that thing shrank!

The kids were wondering why the T-shirt and what a “t-say-ko” is. Lots of questions. Anyhow, once they understood they were willing to observe a moment of silence for LTUHF. Interestingly, in just about every class one-by-one the kids rose to stand and pay their respects to a man they would never know. They have a little better understanding and concept of friendship, loyalty and respect.

Not exactly in my lesson plans but it was important not just to me but to the kids to learn about humanity and the value of life. Thank you to LTUHF for the valuable learning opportunity for my students!

  123. Slugger February 1, 2010 5:42 pm

    Coach Jake & al,

Sampson has a ‘swarm’ of teammates blocking for him on his returns to allow him to escape the defenders. His speed is awesome! Can’t wait to watch him on the field.

R.I.P., LTUHF. Fred’s daughter Melanie got UH shirts for all of the pallbearers. Nice touch for the Long Time UH Fan. We’ll miss you, Fred.

  124. Garret February 1, 2010 5:55 pm

    Mrs. Pang,

My deepest condolences to you and your family for your loss. Fred was such a good example of the best we have to offer and I will miss seeing him on the blog and at the occasional Tsaiko event that I got to do in Hawaii.

After popping in to pay my respects to Fred and his family, I had lunch with Kelvin Shoji and Don Weirs – who is paying off his offer on the Blog for those new and renewing members of Na Koa.

One of the “gifts” given me was the 100th Anniversary DVD UH football..
    So take advantage now!

I also noticed that I am younger than Fred – scarry , no?

  128. bstunna2002 February 1, 2010 6:00 pm

looks like it’s down to us and utah for Vj’s services I hope he decides to stay home but something tells me Utah is his school hope I’m just being pessimistic and I’m wrong.

  129. Garret February 1, 2010 6:01 pm

Wow, the news about the Pro Bowl wasn’t good for Hawaii.

Highest TV ratings in 10 years (40% higher than last year)

Most people attending a Pro Bowl in 50 years (plus, they had luxury boxes and premium seats to really make a lot more money)

    Significantly lower travel expenses

At least Hawaii gets the next 2 Pro Bowls and can get the players to try to lobby for the game to be in Hawaii. Hopefully none of the players will have problems with the Aloha Stadium turf that is overdue for replacement.

  130. Garret February 1, 2010 6:04 pm

    Al,

Arkansas had a top-rated kicker as a commit…but he took a recruiting visit to Austin over the weekend and switched his commit to Texas. Then Arkansas quickly made a phone call to Hocker and offered him, and Hocker switched away from UH without even visiting Arkansas.

Sad how the recruiting dominoes fell on that…if the kicker kept his long-time commit to Arkansas, UH would have kept Hocker.

  131. wowlaulau February 1, 2010 6:07 pm

    Hey Stephen,
Is Utah St still in the running for Fehoko? I read a Utah St blog that Fehoko said they still were.

Tom Mui — I won’t mention your math calculations here, 🙂 but the only thing you and Fred were closer in is number of cruises completed..

But I do wish you and Lois a BON VOYAGE on your cruise this week! 14-nights Hong Kong, Singapore, Viet Nam, and Bangkok.

    T – 2 and counting!!!

Who will keep their word and sign the NLI? Who will change their mind -for and against UH?

Hope Coach Mack and his staff continue a rigorous effort for class of 2011!! Neva too early to start.

  134. A-House February 1, 2010 6:45 pm

Thank you, ST, for posting great news about Sampson accepting a scholarship – got speed in them legs!!!

OK, next recruiting update after mid-night tonight? I will be long gone into dreamland by then.

  135. Pauoa Boy February 1, 2010 6:54 pm

Planny defensive guys on the list…glad the defense going have some mean killahs for the next couple years. Wassup with Iosefa, Manu, Malepeai, Alofipo, etc…from previous recruiting classes??? Would be nice to see all the boys strapping it up ready for pound and knock heads. Planny bangaz to choose from for the defensive front seven and hopefully our young secondary is ready to take it to the next level. Pretty exciting with all this last minute suspense before signing day…

  136. whitey February 1, 2010 7:02 pm

A House, you worried about LOI signing???? Not me, like I said, this year’s group of recruits are true warriors, they want to be warriors, and they have great integrety and will honor their word.

  137. whitey February 1, 2010 7:06 pm

Like I said in December, am pretty satisfied with the commits they have and whatever we get in Jan is additional helpings. To me, so what if we don’t get those “highly rated” players. Like the song says, “Ain’t no big thing brudda, things are looking up”. For those who got scholies at other schools, my congrats to you and your family and my best to you on your next adventure in life. No hard feelings, just want to wish you the best and make your family proud of your accomplishments.

  138. whitey February 1, 2010 7:09 pm

Right now, the only time get excited is when ST posts another recruit who wants to be a Warrior!!!! That is FANTASTIC!!!!!!! Just enjoy another fun year in Warrior fb recruiting and look forward to the future Warriors in spring or summer training, then game time.

  139. whitey February 1, 2010 7:11 pm

PB, good to see you home and know that your family is extremely happy. My many thanks to you and your gang for making sure we can live our lives without fear. Thank You Brudda!!!!!!!

  143. whitey February 1, 2010 7:15 pm

i like the WAC schools getting aggresive in their recruiting to upgrade and most are going head to head with the “biggies” and getting their recruit.

  144. whitey February 1, 2010 7:16 pm

With the WAC being more competitive in the future and taking games head on without flinching, this can only help the conference.

  145. whitey February 1, 2010 7:17 pm

sneak, sneak, so far so good.

  146. whitey February 1, 2010 7:18 pm

i wonder what kind of blockade is ahead when i get closer to 150???? In the meantime, congrats to the mvb and wbb. What a change in attitude by not only the team, but by the fans.

  147. whitey February 1, 2010 7:19 pm

Now, got to wait till 808ike fills us in on the status of the great “Amanda”. Hope she enrolls with the wahines.

  148. Derek February 1, 2010 7:21 pm

Good vibes on Sampson from Florida where they have a lot of good football players. Saw his tape and if he has a crease he’s gone and he has great change of direction and acceleration. I can see him being the first team kickoff and punt returner from the get go. If his hs stats are just as good in returning kicks at Hawaii he’ll be an All American. I think we got a real good one. Great find. How did we find him? Or should I say how did he find us?

  149. whitey February 1, 2010 7:22 pm

so far, so good. Thought about LTUH today and it is amazing on how we met and somehow it seemed that we knew each other for a long time. Guess, we went thru similar experiences when growing up and still share similar “interest”.

  150. whitey February 1, 2010 7:23 pm

OK, OK, brake time and back to lurking.

  151. BleedGreen808 February 1, 2010 7:26 pm

RIP to LTUHF. He seems like a great guy, husband, father, grandfather, friend, and a UH fan. Didn’t know him until lately after reading the tsaikos post, but we share a bond of being a UH fan for life. Condolences to the Pang Family.

  152. sportsbow February 1, 2010 7:27 pm

Salt Lake Tribune says that UH have offered DT, Elvis Matagi a scholarship tonight. Matagi is currently committed to Utah State.

I guess with the loss of Lafa, UH made that move.

    LINK: http://www.sportshawaii.com/sh/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=35004

  153. Stephen Tsai February 1, 2010 7:34 pm

We thought V.J. was going to commit to UH today.
I guess he’s going to make it dramatic.
Folks in the office think he’s picking UH.

  154. mano1 February 1, 2010 7:35 pm

ST…Thanks for what u do. Drama is ok w/me as long as he stays and plays for UH

  155. buffoman February 1, 2010 7:36 pm

Really (reference #135)what about those fellows. They weren’t exactly “chopped liver”. Did we do anything to prepare these folks to “represent”, in 2010?

How is Miah doing? Is he ready to make the show?

  156. A-House February 1, 2010 7:44 pm

    whitey:

Alfred E.Newman – “what, me worry”?

nah, just posted to get a response – like you say, who comes, comes – that’s the only important ting!!!

  157. A-House February 1, 2010 7:47 pm

    buffoman:

#155 – me too, I’m waiting for Miah to “strut his stuff” as a slot receiver – been waiting 2 years – thought he might shift to basketball seeing how Nash need a true “shooter” at the guard position.

  158. Kazz February 1, 2010 7:55 pm

Well… Washington needs Amanda Gil WAAAAYYYY more than we do.

Still… all silent apparently on the “western front” regarding her transfer destination.

  159. Momona February 1, 2010 7:58 pm

Why would Zack Hocker, the #14 rated kicker we were recruiting, want to sign with Arkansas when they already signed the #7 rated kicker???

  160. whitey February 1, 2010 8:05 pm

kazz, tell me we get chance with Amanda????? but then again, if no can, no can. this yr’s wahines going be more devastating than the past yr and they going have an “attitude”.

  161. whitey February 1, 2010 8:09 pm

tomorrow, Tony T might spill the beans, but if you need to know answers, watch his facial expressions when Princess asks him if VJ going commit???? smile, grin, etc.

  162. whitey February 1, 2010 8:10 pm

in fact, I think Pride hit it correct that from now on, All UH Sports will have “an attitude”!!!!!

  163. Ralph February 1, 2010 8:20 pm

maybe amanda shows up at the mvb match with UCLA this thursday. I hope the ushers don’t ask her to leave her seat. lol.

  164. tommui February 1, 2010 8:20 pm

STEVEM: re #132 – when you get old, you forget. That’s right, Fred was born in 1937 (I think) and I was 1933.

  165. al February 1, 2010 8:37 pm

momona….its because the #7 guy went elsewhere.

  166. al February 1, 2010 8:38 pm

my guess is that we will now offer a walkon status for a kicker and if he beats out the others he will pick up a scholie.

  167. al February 1, 2010 8:40 pm

i’d be giving veteson sauni a call about now. he the unsung hero of that stout kahuku dline.

  168. BleedGreen808 February 1, 2010 8:47 pm

Changing to 2011 recruit. Not that I am not interested in this recruiting class which I think will be the best recruiting class at UH in a while but it looks like we offered DE Colt Lyerla of Hillsboro HS in Hillsboro, Oregon a scholarship for 2011 according to scout.com. Looks like a good prospect.

    http://hawaii.scout.com/a.z?s=219&p=8&c=1&nid=3853438

  169. BleedGreen808 February 1, 2010 8:50 pm

You people might already know that since you guys are fantastic at finding these things.

  170. Da Punchbowl Kid February 1, 2010 8:57 pm

    al-

What about that Wilson kid from Waianae?

  171. Kazz February 1, 2010 9:04 pm

maybe amanda shows up at the mvb match with UCLA this thursday. I hope the ushers don’t ask her to leave her seat. 😆

Unless that already happened last weekend.. 🙄

  172. Kazz February 1, 2010 9:06 pm

    Whitey,

Last season, Amber Kaufman was da attitude and so was Aneli. Moreso Aneli was like the calming effect and Amber provided the fire… Well so did Aneli, but…

AH NEVERMIND!!! You know where I’m going with this.

The stiuation in the middle will be interesting with Hartong coming abord as well as what the outside is gonna look like with Waber. Then IF Gil is a factor… then… well yeah… 😎

    We shall see..

  173. jeezy3 February 1, 2010 9:15 pm

ON a bad note. Cooper Pelluer going to Washington.. damn huskies

  174. Kazz February 1, 2010 9:17 pm

    Ralph,

Saw your post last night/early morning. What I noticed is that the softball, baseball, and men’s volleyball schedules don’t “overlap” each other as much as they did last season.

  175. whitey February 1, 2010 9:44 pm

kazz, know gil is a bonus, but my gut feeling is that this upcoming season, wvb will surpass last yr’s performance.

  176. Garret February 1, 2010 9:52 pm

    Momona,

Will Russ (that higher rated kicker) was committed to Arkansas for a long time, but took a recruiting visit to Texas this past weekend. Texas offered a scholarship (they had a scholarship just become available because one current player was arrested and kicked off the team) a few days ago and he accepted over the weekend.

Arkansas then put out an emergency call to Hocker and offered him a scholarship Saturday night or yesterday…it is really bad luck that a highly rated kicker broke his commit to Arkansas and there was another highly rated kicker in Arkansas who they could take. Given a choice between playing for Hawaii or playing in front of family in Arkansas, Hocker chose to stay home.

  177. Garret February 1, 2010 9:53 pm

Cooper Pelluer would be a big loss…but doesn’t UH get one phone call during this dead period? It might not be over. For all we know he could wake up tomorrow morning and feel like going to UH.

  178. BleedGreen808 February 1, 2010 9:53 pm

    jeezy3

    Where did you find this?

  179. whitey February 1, 2010 9:58 pm

now, scott enos has a chance to redeem himself, but the window is shrinking, so this off season training, then spring training will determine his place on the team. giving him a chance and hope he takes full advantage of it.

  180. al February 1, 2010 9:59 pm

it should be noted that arkansas has another highly regarded kicker already on their committed list.

oh well. perhaps the kid was just tripping us.

  181. jeezy3 February 1, 2010 10:02 pm

    he told me..

  182. jeezy3 February 1, 2010 10:03 pm

Al, It was stated somewhere on Ark St board that his friend said he was using us for a vacation because his family has always wanted to go to Hawaii. But he was going to Ark St. So if anything, Ark St got screwed because we never had a shot according to that guy. And seemed believable.

  183. bstunna2002 February 1, 2010 10:12 pm

Hate to break the bad news but Cooper Pelluer committed to UW per his face book page, another good one lost! Unless he wakes up seeing green tomorrow?

  184. al February 1, 2010 10:25 pm

losing pelluer will hurt, but, his position is one where we have an abundance of recruits.

this could open the door for one more great athlete.

    stay tuned.

  185. al February 1, 2010 10:27 pm

unless vj is planning to live out his life in utah it sure did sound like (on tv coverages tonight) he is planning to keep hawaii his home.

  186. BleedGreen808 February 1, 2010 10:30 pm

Thanks jeezy3 and bstunna2002 for the update

  187. BleedGreen808 February 1, 2010 10:37 pm

    #182

No, I want him seeing green on NLI day rather than tomorrow. He still might change his mind is he sees green to early.

  188. BleedGreen808 February 1, 2010 10:38 pm

No, I want him seeing green on NLI day rather than tomorrow. He still might change his mind is he sees green too early.

  189. al February 1, 2010 10:44 pm

    robert….big guy.
i know you are out there.
but, isn’t it allen sampson and not allen simpson?

  190. al February 1, 2010 10:48 pm

amanda gil….more and more it sounds like she may wind up an (ugh) washington huskie.

darn, every where we go those darn huskies are in our way.

well it is no wonder since washington isn’t your hotbed for volleyball and football.

but, really now folks….gloomy days and rain versus the sunshine and beach?

  191. BleedGreen808 February 1, 2010 10:54 pm

Any news on Dominick Sierra whether he will stick with UH. I know he visited Nevada and am scouring nevada’s blogs but can’t find anything. Hope he is still coming.

  192. jeezy3 February 1, 2010 10:58 pm

    Hes comin to hawaii bleed

  193. BleedGreen808 February 1, 2010 11:01 pm

    Thanks jeezy3!!!

  194. al February 1, 2010 11:11 pm

vj gonna wait until wednesday morning?
is that fair to uh or utah?
    just thinking aloud here.

perhaps it is the entertainer that is in his genes?

  195. al February 1, 2010 11:14 pm

i like the way that allen sampson goes right up the gut as he should until there is daylight on his kick returns.

he’s got top end speed and uses his block real well. his timing on his cuts seems to have broken a few ankles.

he should find a job here somewhere.

  196. al February 1, 2010 11:17 pm

it would be good if we could get craig stutzmann back.
that would also allow ron to do the job as the oc as he is capable of.
we seem so short staffed on the offensive side of the ball.

  197. al February 1, 2010 11:28 pm

    elvis in the house

  198. al February 1, 2010 11:31 pm

tony could end up spending two hours with us tomw. but, then again he may be needed elsewhere.

  199. Ralph February 1, 2010 11:40 pm

and Tony can’t answer questions regarding specific recruits until after they sign on Wednesday. Generic questions, leading questions, so what are the ground rules?

  200. Ralph February 1, 2010 11:53 pm

Aloha Fred Pang! May your spirits rejoice with your Ohana and as you continue on your journey I’d like to leave you with a song by Sissel Kyrkjebo – Going Home

  201. Slugger February 1, 2010 11:53 pm

    Good night!

  202. bighilofan2 February 2, 2010 2:55 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

Allen Sampson, Welcome to Warrior Nation.

Hello Mr. Pang. Still thinkking of you.

  203. bighilofan2 February 2, 2010 2:58 am

I said it before and I’ll say it again.

    Warrior is an “attitude.”

Thanks to the Beast for bringing the attitude.

Thanks to Beau Yap for bringing the attitude.

Thanks for those that want to play for the home team, because you are bringing the “attitude.”

And Thank You Vili, because being a Warrior is being one of us.

  204. bighilofan2 February 2, 2010 3:06 am

    Old Diver:
    February 1st, 2010 at 8:31 am
Not going hard after Beau Yap would have been as big a mistake as not going after another player of the year in 1982 Kurt Gouveia. That was a huge mistake Coach Tomey made and one Coach Mack didn’t.

I like reading about the home team, although the reality is we need the speedy guys from Florida and elsewhere to make us a killah team.
    and we’re doing that.

    sooooo

Postmanke, I’m jumping off any thoughts of a sinking ship, and staying with Coach Mack and the Warrior coaches.

  205. bighilofan2 February 2, 2010 3:13 am

    boy o boy

Allen Sampson has some really spiffy and killah moves.

Tombo Ahi has some really great videos of Allen Sampson, expecially the second one. for sure he’ll be an impact player. make the whole team better.

  206. bighilofan2 February 2, 2010 3:16 am

    jeezy3

    isn’t Pelleur’s father a coach at Udub?

  207. wafan February 2, 2010 3:30 am

Good morning, all! Another grey and wet day in the Pacific Northwe(s)t.

  208. bighilofan2 February 2, 2010 3:39 am

    good morning wafan.

so what, a two hour drive to Whistler in a coupla weeks?

  209. bighilofan2 February 2, 2010 3:48 am

my best wishes for the Fehoko kid. gotta come to compete, be up for the challenge. no doubt it’ll be harder, being Vili’s son and all.

but that is what life is all about. up for the challenges.

the rewards come when you hear Hawaii cheering for the home team.

  210. bighilofan2 February 2, 2010 3:49 am

    that’ll be the Warriors

  211. wafan February 2, 2010 3:59 am

    Hi, bhf2!

I wish. Checked ticket prices but . . . whew. I guess I will just have to cheer for some of the world’s best athletes from the comfort of my recliner.

  212. wafan February 2, 2010 4:07 am

The State of Hawai’i was ranked 2nd in prettiest women and 2nd in happiness. Heck, I guess that makes sense. If I could see pretty women all the time I would be happy, too.

I am sure there are a few pretty women up here but they are usually covered up with jackets, hats, gloves, boots, . . . While in Hawai’i they are barely covered up with T-shirts, shorts, bathing suits, . . . No wonder Washington is ranked 36th for pretty women. Do the recruits really know what they are going to miss?

  213. Garret February 2, 2010 4:26 am

    Note to A-Joe:

Elvis Matagi, who got an offer from UH yesterday, is from Kekaulike High School. He’s currently committed to Utah State, but his commit must not be too solid because he went to Utah on a recruiting trip over the weekend.

Matagi also got a scholarship offer from UNLV, so he’s definitely an example of a neighbor island recruit who has the attention of D-IA coaches.

  214. LizKauai [iMac] m/ February 2, 2010 5:22 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!
Well… the heavy and sudden rain got me up. Just when I wanted to sleep another hour before my alarm!
Looks like some is heading for Oahu soon.

Have a great and safe day and see you at 11 AM for the Warrior Beat Vid.

  215. jm2375 February 2, 2010 5:51 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

    Liz – stay dry.

Welcome, again, to Allen “Turbo” Sampson. Thank you Rolo.

“I love the coaches and the program and the offense they run,” said Sampson, who was recruited by quarterbacks coach Nick Rolovich. “I really like Coach Rolo. He’s laid back. He’s funny. He’s so cool.”

  216. djmitcho February 2, 2010 6:06 am

Good Morning Tsaikoland! Hope everyone has a good day. Counting down til the recruits put their signatures on paper.

  217. d1島 February 2, 2010 6:10 am

    Great Morning All!

    Bulla,

Good call about wearing the Tsaiko shirts yesterday to LTUHF’s memorial. Lorna and his daughter, Melanie, were very appreciative whenever they were able to identify one of us because of the shirt.

Hawaii football was a big part of their family’s experience together and they related how much Fred enjoyed sharing that with his Tsaiko family, too.

Big Mahalo to Lorna and the family for hosting us at a great lunch and appreciate the green bottles so we could offer one last toast to a terrific LongTimeUHFan. 🙂

  218. d1島 February 2, 2010 6:14 am

Welcome to the Warrior Ohana Allen Sampson!

Looking forward to hearing terrific “generic” things from Tony Tuioti late today 😆

Have a terrific day erryboddy! Take your umbrellas and stay dry.

    HiHo…

  219. tommui February 2, 2010 6:21 am

    Good morning Hawaii!

Hope to read about our recruiting news real soon.
Packed and got to load the car in a short while.

    GO WARRIORS!

  220. Pride. February 2, 2010 10:57 am

    For Tony,

Are you at liberty to tell what your recruiting budget is?

  221. Pride. February 2, 2010 11:00 am

    Tony,

You are obviously going head to head with a few BCS schools for athletes. How would recruiting be affected if we were to double your budget? In other words where would you put the added money to use?

  222. Pride. February 2, 2010 11:04 am

    Tony

We have a lot of football alumni like yourself who are living in different areas on the mainland and throughout the state of Hawaii. How can these alumni be a source of information for you and the coaching staff without violating NCAA rules?

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
