Too many turnovers for Wahine

It’s pretty easy to see why Hawaii lost to Cal State Fullerton 66-51 today in the women’s Big West tournament. Turnovers. The Rainbow Wahine gave up the ball 22 times, and the Titans were credited with 17 steals.

Give Fullerton a lot of credit for a second-consecutive upset in the tournament, especially considering the program is enduring despite the murder of assistant coach Monica Quon last month.

It’s surprising UH played so poorly against a team it just beat here handily (after trailing at halftime) at the Stan Sheriff Center last Saturday on senior night.

The Wahine had to get on a plane for a five-hour plane ride for this game and Fullerton’s about a half hour away by car. No excuse, though.

UH’s perimeter defense wasn’t as good as usual, and the Titans made  5 of 13 3-pointers.

First-year Rainbow Wahine coach Laura Beeman still deserves a contract extension in my opinion, as she led UH to its first winning season in six years.

WNIT? I doubt they get a bid after this loss.

many of the teams were zoning and double teaming when the ball came in the paint, why did not they counter this defense? the same thing that other teams are doing to the men’s team. both teams are similar, slow big players, lack of three point shooters and slow guards. if arnold cannot devise an offense to counter this collapsing zone defense, they will likely lose too.

Dave, no coach is ever hired to have less than a .500 season. Coach Beeman had a winning season this year, that is what she was hired to do. To negotiate an extension after one year is not financially responsible. What if next year’s team were to face unexpected injuries and end up with a <.500 season. Would UH then have the right to cancel the extension?

See Reardon. You talk to much and to soon with all this extension stuff. You jinxed the team!

Why is my first comment awaiting moderation for 5 hours Reardon? Truth hurts right?

It is normal to extend at least one year under even regular circumstances for recruiting purposes. Also, considering the incredible amount of improvement, an extension is especially warranted. But you also include percentage buyout provisions in case things go way south and a change has to be made.

    4. ah, no … that’s how this system works … first comment has to be moderated and then once you’re in the first time they’re supposed to come in automatically. Sorry, no one was available at 4:59 a.m. to moderate your comment.

Dave Reardon, master of high jinx…lol. The older I get, the less impressed I am with folks, and them with me I’m sure, but Beeman impressed me this year. She is a very good college basketball coach and I hope we keep her around for a long, long time.
