Former Warrior inspires at practice

If the Wizard of Oz is correct — “a heart is not judged by how much you love, but by much you are loved by others” — then Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea has a plus-sized ticker.

Kema-Kaleiwahea, a former Warrior defensive end, attended this morning’s practice to a rousing reception. At one point, the defensive players lined up to exchange hand shakes and hugs.

Kema-Kaleiwahea is a rush end for the Asahi Challengers of Japan’s X League. The Challengers bought out Kema-Kaleiwahea’s contract with a pro team in Germany. The Challenges paid for Kema-Kaleiwahea to visit Hawaii for a few days.

Kema-Kaleiwahea also teaches English in Japan.

I hope the Warriors have a huge lead going into the 4th quarter so that other players get the chance to show their stuff. Despite the Western Carolina’s record last year, I expect them to give Hawaii a difficult time. The quarterback and running back are sound.

Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea just joined the German Crocodiles in June and played impressive for them a bit. But he was remembered here in Hawaii for transferring from Arizona to adopt two of his siblings with his wife and also a captain on the UH team in 2016. Whaddah Guy. 🙂

David Freitas had an RBI double in his major league debut with Atlanta.
He had been in the minors for eight years, after playing for UH.

Larry Gonzalez had two at-bats at the Major League level.

David Freitas has three and hopefully counting.

Freitas was a one-year player who left after his junior season.

    Seven years on buses.
