From UH
University of Hawai’i middle hitter Skyler Williams (Bellflower, Calif./Mayfair HS) opened her collegiate career by putting on a blocking exhibition, as she was voted Big West Women’s Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week honors.

Taking on three tough opponents in the UH-hosted Texaco Rainbow Wahine Invitational, Williams started each match and emerged with solid numbers of 1.69 kills and 1.62 blocks per set. She also hit a respectable .258 while amassing 22 kills and 21 blocks.

In her collegiate debut she notched six kills, .294 hitting and 12 block assists in a narrow five-set loss to Marquette. The 12 blocks was the most for UH since Olivia Magill totaled the same amount versus St. John’s on Sept. 6, 2014.

Williams hit .318 with eight kills and seven blocks, including a match-high six block assists, against No. 22 San Diego.

She ended the tournament with eight kills and two blocks against No. 13 UCLA.

Cindy, just some feedback on the new design. Can you have the IT guys remove the “I’m not a robot” section below? Very irritating to have to continually click on pics, and even then that functionality doesn’t always work correctly. I’m so over identifying store fronts.

Dropping to 30th seems better than expected after opening the season 0-3. Wahine let one slip away when they seemed to have control of the 5th set against UCLA. This seems to be a trend in allowing their opponent to make runs down the stretch.

Williams named Big West Freshman of the Week!

Nicole Rodriguez (UC Riverside) is the defensive player of the week and Adlee Van Winden (Cal Poly) is the player of the week

To the Wahine, hold your heads up, continue working as a team. Learn from these past games and move forward to this weeks games.

I still enjoy watching you play. I know it is a disappointment, but it happens to good teams from time to time. It’s what you do moving forward that is important.

But stay together as a team and work hard for each other.

    Go Wahine!!!

Ms. Luis. Have the Star-Advertiser go with Disqus commenting platform (I’d post a link here, but that would place my comment In Moderation).

Maverick. The ‘site needs to have some failsafes. Unless you want your comment(s) to be buried by ads for overseas brides or grooms, “best steak in the nation, call now,” free internet and cable, and medical breakthroughs.

  6. Maverick August 28, 2017 1:44 pm

    5. Chicken, I never had those issues before the site re-vamp, and no one else reported those issues either. The verification is more a problem than a solution.

Hi, Cindy. Thank you for persevering despite the redesign. This first tournament was quite the experience for all.

My apologies for returning to blog format issues, but I have not seen any fixes to the reported problems. The hyperlink in the right column of items when things are set 2col is not fixed. The blog list is not always current and thus it is hard to find the most current entry (even with the direct hyperlink another reader provided). The surest route continues to be clicking on hyperlinks that you post at the bottom of a comment section when you have the next post ready to go live. I hope you don’t mind continuing to do that for us.

As for the robot/captcha security, I tried timing it last night and it seems to reset at about 3 minutes or so. Would your IT department be willing to try extending the verification window to something like 10 minutes?

If the Wahine continue to play with the intensity and passion they displayed last night, then the future is now. Wow, a complete turnaround from the previous two nights.
Hoping that Sky recovers from her injury enough to take the floor on Thursday. Love how she displays her exuberance and excitement after making a good play, similar to Kendra.
    GO BOWS.

I don’t like seeing this program unranked and in the receiving votes category, hope it’s not a normal occurance from here on out like it has been for Long Beach state for the past 15 years.

Love the new lineup. Glad to see Kalei back in there. Such a positive presence.

I am so much into wahine volleyball that i know the perseverance, passion, and intensity they played against UCLA will be their trademark. I don’t like when people are criticizing Shoji or Robyn when they say they don’t have the players. Casey, Kendra, Emily all have the ability incl.Mckenna Granato to be the terminator and i was visibly upset when people next to me was sarcastically chastising Granato…it reminds me of the player we had couple yrs. ago who played the left side hitter and she came through just as much as Granato…..this is a good team and i know they will persevere this season as these 3 games were a learning experience esp. for the freshmen who never played in such a crowd before…..no problem…..all of my support to Robyn…..go for it….hang in there….go wahines……….

I am happy. The ladies have a lot of spunk. No quit in the Wahine. The match could have gone either way. I see some players getting better with more playing time. A tweak here a tweak there who knows what will happen.

  13. eMpTy August 28, 2017 7:49 pm

Sky reminds me of Olivia. Not the tallest, but a lot of hops. Hope she continues to do well. Go Bows…

Williams is also similar to Magill (and Jade Vorster) in which they seem to have a less-than-perfect connection with the setter and they end up whiffing the ball over but still end up with a kill. The best thing about Williams (apart from her blocking) is her energy. She is a joy to watch.

  15. Bleachercoach August 29, 2017 4:45 am

    My future lineup:
    Iosia/Setter
    Kahakal/Libero
    Lipscomb/Rt Side
    Maglio/Opp
    Williams/MB
    Castillo/MB

Koelsch,Granato, Sibley,Ross can rotate when one of our hitters are tired or having an off night

Don’t really give a rip about the rankings and the streak of years we’ve been on it. It’ll be short lived and a new streak will start shortly. It’s a new era. The Robyn-ator is on the case and we’ll be fine.

  17. Ashley August 29, 2017 8:39 am

is there any update on Williams? i hope her injury isn’t serious. we will need her this weekend.

as for the rankings, well the poll means nothing to me.

  18. Cindy Luis August 29, 2017 12:29 pm

don’t know what happen to my Williams FOW mention but it is posted now.

Maverick, i have no control over it. I was being asked to do the same thing every time I had a comment. And it’s my blog. That issue has been fixed for me but that doesn’t help you.

We are trying to go another route on the blog for registration but, again, I am not in charge. Can only pass along your comments. Thank you.

    17. It didn’t appear to be serious. She was walking around after the match Sunday.
They were off yesterday and she was going to have it looked at
will know more today when I see her before pracitce.

  19. mauna August 29, 2017 1:52 pm

Sky was just gassed. Three straight matches with two going five she ran out of gas. They thought about putting in Sophia in the UCLA match late to have her catch her breath.

  20. 2left August 29, 2017 3:35 pm

Watched a bit of the Wahine 2015 NCAAs, and I had forgotten how good Kalei can be playing all the way around. For the second stright year, she is tantalizingly almost within reach to stabilize the Wahine’s OH position. Anyone have insight on what the coaches and doctors are thinking about her chances to ever hit again at UH?

  21. Ki August 29, 2017 4:54 pm

I’m curious if Robyn & Company plan to recruit internationally?

  22. islandman August 29, 2017 5:15 pm

USA Volleyball Cup USA Women v Brazil on NBCSN now, for me on analog channel 19.

  23. turfwar August 29, 2017 11:08 pm

Hawaii Stars on Tuesday night before the 10pm news had a segment on Coach Robyn and if you didn’t catch it you need to find it somehow. It is current, fresh and soo well done. It was hard not to shed a tear or two as her story and her interview was so heart warming. Hope someone can find it and post. And she looks so good in something other than sports gear.

  24. setaone August 30, 2017 5:33 am

turfwar….what station was that on? thanks

  25. ML August 30, 2017 11:47 am

Hi Cindy – This is my first post on your blog. Off topic, but have you heard from Annie Mitchem? Only ask as Friendswood TX got pounded by Harvey. I know that’s her hometown. Aloha.
