JC wideout to join UH
Wideout Darius Bright of City College of San Franciso told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a UH scholarship offer.
Bright is 6 feet 5, 225 pounds and capable of running 40 yards in about 4.5 seconds.
He will enroll at UH this coming week, and participate in the offseason conditioning program and spring practice.
CCSF coach George Rush said Bright also was being recruited by Oklahoma.
Bright missed two games in 2009 because of migraines. In eight games, he caught 21 passes for 227 yards and four touchdowns.

Former UH defensive end Melila Purcell still has not abandoned hopes of playing again in the NFL.
Purcell spent two years on the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad.
Last year, he suffered a severe ankle injury. He reached an injury settlement with the Browns that allowed him to receive essentially a buyout while also having the NFL’s workman’s comp plan pay for his surgery and rehabilitation. In exchange, the Browns were able clear his spot on the roster.
Purcell is undergoing physical-therapy treatment on Kauai. The hope is he will be fully recovered before the start of training camp this summer.

Last night’s volleyball crowd might not have been younger, but it acted that way. Part of it has to do with the cheerleaders, band, the Rubberband Man and the guy with the green glasses. A greater part has to do with the Warriors’ renewed enthusiasm. Opposite attacker Jonas Umlauft has created opportunities for left-side hitter Joshua Walker, whose loud spikes are ooh-and-aah inducing. Also, the Warriors are playing gritty defense, and first-year head coach Charlie Wade acknowledges that Hawai‘i fans love good defense.
The party just might be starting.

One of the cool things about men’s volleyball is the casual atmosphere. Win or lose, the players get a lei from the aunties and a nice meal in the hospitality area. And everybody knows everybody on a first-name basis, even the coaches and referees.
The other night, Penn State coach Mark Pavlik’s tooth implant fell out during the match. After the match, he was proudly showing the metal piece to boosters, much the way a kid shows his parents his first lost tooth. In sports, getting a coach to talk after a game often is like pulling teeth. In men’s volleyball, that’s a good thing.

Yup indeed. Ya gotta love the way the Vballer season is rollin’ so far. You could also see that USC was affected by our crowd, young or old. And there did seem to be just enough pretty young keikamahines sittin’ in the stands to be a distraction as well.

Well deserved congratulations to the men’s VB!!! I was very interested in how they would react after the second game loss. Actually, they started providing an answer in the latter stages of game 2 when they refused to fold and go through the motions when they were being steamrolled early on and actually cut into the big lead. Then in game 3, I watched intently to see how their reactions as SC crept closer and closer, and ramped up the pressure. Same in game 4. I was willing to settle for a show of mental toughness in a loss to #1, but the team embarressed me for my low expectations and pulled it out as a TEAM.
I fully expect this will be a monumental milestone in terms of confidence, learning to win, and team chemistry. Fantastic showing guys! You deserve it!
Thank goodness we have Volleyball to help shore up the woes in BB for this season. Still hoping for a turnaround by both BB teams, though.

For all of those combines and 40s and t-drills and 225 lifts, one thing is overlooked: can a guy tackle?
In terms of attendance and revenue I thought Wahine Volleyball was the #2 spectator sport in town?
you can see similarities between uh wvb and mvb and this is a huge bonus for JD and the athletic dept. i don’t think many schools have crowds with 3000+ at any of their games and if they can carry on, they will definitely be a men’s sport who will make money for UH.
ssssssstephen, basic tackling has always been an issue for me with the warriors and am glad you are giving it sum headlines.
Question in yesterday’s blog – yes, the cheerleaders and fans were yelling LET’S GO BOWS!!! I assume that the coaching staff is comfortable with this since all the other court sports use the same chant.
I can hardly wait until the end of the month to celebrate the next home win.
Off to the HI-5 Drive – hope we make enough on the redemption fees to cover the costs of our next community service project – a QUICK`NDIRTYCLEANUP of Kapa`a Quarry Road next Sataurday. To do there entire length would require about 150 volunteers – realistically, we expect about 15 – 18 so we should cover a third of a mile.

One would think USC would figure it out by now how the volleyball aunties do their thing considering SC has played here before.
ball stripping is an art and don’t know why we spend time on it instead of basic tackling. if you encourage stripping and they miss, ball carrier is long gone, but if you tackle first, that’s it. the positives on tackling is no additional yds, possiblity of fumbles, and makes ball carriers hesitant and works on their minds.
watch ray lewis, does he tackle high or does he drop em in their tracks?? and with that the players develop fear from the oppposition.

whitey saw the stripping tact many times at the UH games an most of the times they didn’t strip the ball and the ball-carrier got a lot more yards than he should have. So I agree tackle first.

I think its confusing for everybody…the fans, media, players, coaches, opponents…Warriors, Rainbow Warriors, Rainbow Wahine….I’m sorry, but let’s scrap “Go ‘Bows” and go with “WAR–riors!” instead. We have a consistent log; let’s have a consistent nickname. All other schools have one name; why can’t UH? Our colors don’t even reflect “rainbows” anymore. And we all know in this day and age that a “rainbow” symbolizes alternative lifestyles. We’re either the Rainbows or the Warriors…take your pick and go with it already…My pick is the Warriors and the Wahine Warriors with forest green, black and white as the school colors…..

We were amongst the 3000+ fans at the SCC last evening and the place was a-rocking!
Although Mrs A-house and I left after the 3rd game, we came home only to see that the score was 27-21 in the 4th game with UH leading. We watched the final 3 points and it took us back to decades ago when 10,000+ filled the SCC for MVB, WVB, and MBB for which we had season tickets.
Rather than “the Russians are coming, the Russians are coming”, it should read “the MVB team is coming” and the train will not stop until the final 4.
Conratulations to Coach Wade and his staff for making the necessary changes to positively affect the players in school and on the court!

IMHO, Warriors should be attached only to the football team. It’s more appropriate.
To the best of my knowledge, Green and White are still the official colors for UH; not Green, Black, and White. And, Rainbows still the official “nickname” of the school ( UH-Manoa ).

I respectfully disagree that there’s some kind of mass confusion about the UH’s various sport team names. I doubt players and coaches anguish about it very much as their attention is where it should be: playing the game & executing. To say the fans are confused is just too broad a generalization; and although you might be confused, I and a lot of other fans aren’t. The name ‘Rainbows’ or ‘Bows’ has been an established tradition for decades for several of the teams . JJ was the main coach who had a problem with the term because he felt that some group of individuals on the mainland were ‘adopting’ UH as their team. I believe that smacks of homophobia. Ever hear of the Rainbow Coalition? It symbolizes multi-ethnic / multi-cultural concerns=it is NOT synonymous
with alternative lifestyles. I don’t think it’s a widespread given that all locals
associate rainbows with being gay. I think of Manoa Valley rainbows when I attended UH and I still consider it a good omen on game days.
As for saying it confuses the opponents? Gimme a break-who cares if it confuses the opponents. We want the opponents to be confused!
Rainbows, Bows, Rainbow Warriors, it’s all the same to me. Rainbows is the school nickname, Warriors are the men’s teams, Wahine are the women’s teams.
What I didn’t care for was the cartoon pot-bellied warrior on the logo.

That might mean that Riley might have even MORE clout with the local recruits with a higher profile / prime time (big name)school regardless of the lackluster season they just had. Might tell the recruits that the competition is wide open for all positions; that nobody’s guaranteed a starting spot.
The theory is that USC only recruits Parade All-Americans and 4 and 5-stars, so the only one that USC recruited from Hawaii was Teo last season. OSU and other PAC-10 schools compete for Hawaii’s talents. So agree with Al that Riley going to SC can only help Hawaii.

UH volleyball is fun to watch. These guys are exciting. The big guy helps the middle to be successful and the person who is benefitting the most is Walker. Hopefully, men’s volleyball will have a great season. On the other hand, UH basketball is the opposite. They are not exciting to watch. I’d say to the UH basketball team, they have found the enemy…..themselves. They cannot handle the ball and take care of it. The team is sorely lacking in atheticism, quickness, and basketball ability. I watch a lot of basketball on ESPN, CBS, and Fox and I see a lot of good teams and players. Example, yesterday I saw K-State and Missouri. Not that was a great basketball game. I feel like I want to watch the UH men’s volleyball more than the UH men’s basketball team. That’s pretty said, because it should be the opposite. Basketball should be the money maker over volleyball. To Donovan, “We’ve got problems!”

We don’t yet know about the ‘hawks, Carroll, SC, Riley, etc. A key component for UH and the 808 is Coach Cav. He has clearly been the advocate at OSU for local/Poly recruits. Will Coach Cav remain at OSU, move w/ the Riley, or move-on – period. In any case, he will continue to recruit local players. This may likely increase the opportunities for 808 players and increase the competition for UH as protector posted. We’ll have to wait & see.
The Warriors have to promote the chance to play at home, in front of friends & family, in a locale that will likely be “home” for these players even after their playing days are over, and go after the student-athletes that really, really want this opportunity.

if Sarkisian decides to be Carroll’s OC, then Udub will also be looking for a new HC.
agree with al, no al I will NOT put up my Rainbow BB jacket as a Tsaiko prize, that UH may be the unintended beneficiary in recruiting for local talent. the faster Carroll signs the contract, the faster everything will begin to fall into place.
looks like the writing is on the wall that the NCAA will hit USC big time for the Reggie Bush situation – would like to see Bush lose his Heisamn trophy, USC give up the national title, forfeit all the games where Bush played, lose scholarships, and NO participation in post season football games. can they sanction Carroll for his role is this mess? cannot recall a coach ever being hit by the NCAA for his role in scandals.
some told me recently that the NCAA would never do that because USC brings in to much money for the NCAA and they are to high a profile school – of course my response was, “that’ bull shit” and creates an opportunity for some one to file a legal action against the NCAA for out right discrimination.
person also mentioned that UH was used as an example to other schools for violating basketball standards by using “semi-pro” players from Europe – why did the NCAA not have the balls to call out all the big name schools for doing such? using UH VB as an excuse is just shameful.
one factor in any discrimation lawsuit is that it opens up the institution or business for everything and investigators can inspect all other areas of interest other than the allegation filed in the civil action. correct me if I am wrong our great legal minds!
Can I ask a question regarding academics and transfers?
I never had to worry about transferring credits, from one institution to another (prisons and hospital wards don’t count). What are the problems transferring from quarter-based schools to semester-based ones, and vice versa. Are credits evaluated as whole units? Is a quarter of say – chemistry, weighted as the same as a semester, or just part of a semester of work.
I’m wondering about this and how it pertains to student-athletes like Ryan E., etc. Thanks in advance for any insights you can provide. 😀

fyi, ryan coulldn’t talk to academic advisors or compliance UNTIL he was accepted into the UH system, praise God…..that was Friday morning. so now we continue down the path one step at a time…..but everything is moving along well. the fact that he was admitted is good, and it’s semester classes, so it should be fine……just have to see what he wants to major in and go from there. he had a chance to talk with tuika tufaga yesterday at a pot luck and had a good time.

I like the reported size and speed figures for Darius. While I would prefer for UH to focus more on high schools than JCs, if Darius has a redshirt year available then he could fit a need for the 2 years after the coming season since so many WRs will be gone after this season.

The revenue streams for basketball have a MUCH higher ceiling than volleyball, and so the success of the basketball team is much more critical for the Athletic Department. Basketball also normally gets much higher TV ratings (even in Hawaii), which I would guess means that it gets much higher readership.
Best wishes to Melila Purcell. Injuries can really make it hard for a player to establish himself in the NFL. The NFL generally won’t wait for a player to get healthy enough to show what they can do (see: RGM) unless they are a high draft pick, but some players are able to come back from serious injury to have long and productive careers.

I think that regardless of the sport, fans will embrace an exciting and succesful product. The Men’s VB team seems to meet the bill. If the Men’s Basketball team becomes more consistent & can become more compettitve in the WAC, the fans will return. If you build it..they will come.

I went offline before you asked your question yesterday about California universities and how they are doing in this period of cutbacks. Their budgets have been significantly cut, but they were not so underfunded like UH before that. Also, they decided to raise fees (UC schools announced a 32% fee increase late last year) that covers a lot of their shortfall. So, their quality of education hasn’t been hurt too much by the cutbacks in state funding, though students are getting squeezed by the fee increase. The good thing is that the scholarship students aren’t affected (scholarships cover fees) and the lower income students may not be affected (financial aid was increased significantly at the same time of the fee increase). The rich won’t care. So, the people really hurt by the change is the middle class…and they are sadly getting hit from all sides already in this economy.
The K-12 public schools had similar budget cuts in Hawaii and California. Hawaii was already underfunding the public schools so they had to resort to furloughs…I still cannot believe that Hawaii’s kids will lose about 10% of the school year. California didn’t need the furloughs, but ended up having to increase class sizes and cut back on the extra instructors. Faith still has different teachers for PE, science (with a great lab), computers (another great lab), art, and music (I enjoyed watching the 1st graders play instruments in their Christmas show) that she sees every week. She sees 1-2 of those other teachers every day, so her regular teacher has a lot of prep time during the school day. She had 9 kids in her class last year and has 19 now, but I figure 19 is not bad. The cutbacks were going to eliminate the PE and art or music teacher positions, but the parents fundraised to preserve those positions.

Are you sure that Bright can play 3 more seasons? He was apparently mentioned in the season previews for the 2008 and 2009 teams at CCSF and he has stats for both the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Maybe I’m reading things wrong, but that seems to indicate he has 2 years left to play, which is why I posted about my hope that he might have a redshirt year available to learn the system.

darius bright was one of those under the radar guys who came from north carolina to the city college of san franscisco. he was an accomplished basketball player in north carolina as well, so that tells me that he has good hands.

I read/heard somewhere that June Jones utilized a TE a few times this season. Might be something worth looking into at the very least.

That’s an intriguing proposition. I think they still want him as an edge rusher, though, if he can gain a lot more weight without slowing him down. Having two 6′ 5″ wide-outs on the field at the same time (with speed) could make things very interesting, though.

Yeah , I wish they would use a tight end, or at least an H-back.
They could help out on pass blocking, then drift beyond the line of
scrimmage for a short pass. Guarans 3 – 4 yards gain.
They could also help out on run blocking “on the perimeter”.
I sure hope they’re incorporated into our RnS offense.

National sports sites threw out the names of Jeff Fisher and
Jack Del Rio, who are usc alums. However, slugger said Fisher is not
interested. Del Rio, imo, has been on the “warm seat” recently.
Herm Edwards name was also mentioned.
There are other big name pro coaches out there, but I don’t think
