Funaki named as GA
Former UH running back/quarterback Inoke Funaki has been named a graduate assistant. He fills the spot vacated when Craig Stutzmann left at the start of the 2009 season. UH still is seeking to replace Mike Smith, who was a GA for defense last year.

No UH player is on the initial invitation list for the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
A second wave of invitations will go out in two weeks, after the deadline for juniors to declare for the NFL draft.

Several years ago, while interviewing Norm Chow when he was BYU’s offensive coordinator, he asked me and Ferd if we wanted sodas. He then made his graduate assistant fetch them for us. The GA? Steve Sarkisian, now Washington’s head coach.
Ya never know.
Which brings us to this debate: Which assistant coach with Hawaii ties is next in line for a head-coaching job?
For all of June Jones’ success, only one of his assistants — Greg McMackin — became a head coach. The most successful at grooming coaches was Bob Wagner: Rich Ellerson, Ken Niumatalolo, Paul Johnson and Mike Sewak became head coaches.
Fred vonAppen’s staffs produced two head coaches (Tom Williams and Ken Margerum). Three, I suppose, if you count Don Dillon’s stint as a JC head coach.
So, any rising stars? Rich Miano? Nick Rolovich? Chris Tormey? Inoke Funaki?

Chris Ault said that two of the key players suspended in the Hawaii Bowl will be back on their team next season…though he *really* criticized Taua sharply and things have to be at least uncomfortable between Ault and Taua.

Hoping to address positions of concern, the Dolphins signed linebacker Brian Johnston and wide receiver/returner Ryan Grice-Mullen. Miami also signed six other players.
Grice-Mullen, like leading Dolphins 2009 receiver Davone Bess, wasn’t drafted out of the University of Hawaii’s pass-happy system in 2008.

So SC’s best player is goin’ early to the draft, and now their Coach looks like he’s gone. This is not bad news for Warriors fans. 😉
So Da Beast is officially enrolled… Cool. Now he can beat down the books and beat down the backs- opposing running backs and quarterbacks that is. I pity the fool with the ball when he gets his chance in the opening game in 2011.

I would think that Coach Tormey would have the fastest track given that he already has head coaching experience and still has the drive and ambition to be one, given the right situation. I hope it’s not too soon as he seems to be a really good coach & recruiter as well as coming across as being an upbeat guy with loads of personality. His work with the safeties to me is significant as Spencer Smith & Mana Silva are probably playing the best & most consistent football in their lives. He’s also helped make improvements on special teams as well.

I think you’re right on the money about Coach Riley & Coach Sarkisian being the front-runners. I think however that Sarkisian has indicated he’ll be with the Huskies for the long haul, meaning Riley moves to the forefront.

If Mike Riley becomes the new USC HC, expect Mark Banker (Fmr UH asst under Bob Wagner) to become OSU’s new HC. Many people say that Banker is ready to become a HC. Funny how things work out. Jeff Fisher is a USC grad and could come into the USC picture. Norm Chow, as much as I like him, many say that he’s too old and no longer a hot commodity. As they say, stranger things have happened, though. Remember when the NFL Cardinals hired Bud Wilkenson, the old OU coach?

Watching for V.J. Fehoko in the All-American Bowl. Roster shows #35 for the West.
Tormey already had a HC gig at Reno and is probably the most likely candidate, although it may not be at the FBS-level.
Watching these HS all-stars, it’s real evident that the 808-kids haven’t closed the speed gap on the elite players in the nation.
It’s interesting to hear the comments of these HS Seniors as they take their turn at making their “declarations” on camera. When asked about what influenced their decision, many say that the selected school is someplace they will feel good about for the next four years.
What they don’t realize is that it is probably a 40-year decision that is being made!
I am really trying to care about this Pete Carroll stuff but… just don’t!!! 😆

As far as future head coaches on the Hawaii staff, great question Mr. Tsai.
I really believe somebody like Nick Rolovich has a bright future. Great offensive system that we all know works, IF, defensive coaches who become head coaches don’t keep stepping all over themselves.
The offense takes committment. I like Rolo’s attitude and almost June Jones like mind set.
Rich Miano, you can’t help but love his passion, his desire, he connections here in Hawaii. I do believe he’d be a great fit at the University of Hawaii some day.
The rest, well, maybe, but not here.
I saw some talk yesterday regarding the recruitment, or non-recruitment I should say, of Iolani’s Seali’i Epenesa. Saw a post that suggested maybe he didn’t fit into Hawaii’s plans or schemes.
Here’s the deal, NOT recruiting a player like Epenesa, frankly, is just stupid. No other way to put it. Just dumb.
It’ll eventually be the downfall of Greg McMackin, no doubt in my mind. His inability to connect with local players, local coaches and their families will bring his program to it’s knees.
No Epenesa, no Andrew Manley, no Hauoli Jamora, no Kona Schwenke, no Beau Yap, not even a damn offer to the state’s BEST high school football players.
I understand some kids want and will go away, but DAMN, U.H. still needs to recruit these kids, show ’em some love. How simple is that ?
Good luck in future recruiting McMackin. The word is out. Kids know it, high school coaches know it, their families know it. Costly decisions I tell you, costly, because they all talk, and they already are.

I don’t know who will the “first” to become a HC, but it is a tremendous asset to any HC/leader who will take any opportunity train a subordinate to become a HC even if it means replacing him/herself.
Unfortunately,this is where many will NOT consider this because it could mean their job.
Obviously Miano wants to be a head coach real bad. Whether or not he is material is up for discussion. I could see him leaving for a I-AA position as HC and working that route.
In the hopes of getting a really good OC I wouldn’t mind if Ron Lee were to search elsewhere at maybe a Div II level HC job.
Obviously Tormey is HC in waiting for some school. It doesn’t take much smarts to see this is only a “job” since he was let go at Washington. Nothing more, nothing less. A good offer will have him packing, as it should. He is overqualified here at Hawaii as a special teams coach.
As for Rolovich, Funaki, Smith etc they are way way to young and inexperienced for me to even begin to think of them as head coaching material. I think its possible for them to move onto bigger schools as assistants though.

Call it a hunch but I don’t think USC picks from w/in the PAC-10. Sarkesian, Riley, Chow even Harbaugh (best choice IMO).
I think they will look to the SEC or Big 12 or NFL again for a coach.

I think for the most part USC pays big time $5.5M+ (maybe even 6.5+) for a new coach. That is darn well near NFL salary for some coaches.
I would expect no more and no less than a big time, big name coach who has been either part of BCS bowl game even championship the past 3-4 years or an NFL HC who is currently jobless or OC in the league now.
IMO: Look to the Belichick coaching tree for the next head coach.

By now we all get your message — you don’t like the local boyz getting away, so you point the finger at the UH coaches. You have the right to speak your mind. I think we’d all prefer to see the State’s best play for the home team. Just remember, though, that blame is not always warranted. From what I understand, Schwenke, for example, was never going to consider UH, going back to last year. It was not in the cards. How does that warrant blame?

Thanks. I think though that Rolovich should get a pay bump or at least be paid at the higher end of that salary range. I think the play calling and what I see (in the few practices that i attended) that he has worked hard as the “offensive coach” on the team.
I think he did a pretty decent job at play calling and it got better after that first 2 games.

I know for sure that all of the top prospects entering the 2009 season were offered scholarships.
Young people make decisions based on a variety of reasons. Nobody should criticize a teen-ager for making an important life decision. As for teams, there are a limited number of scholarships. The math is tricky: each prospect gets up to five visits. So a team has to weigh its options of landing a player while still having enough room should everybody accept. Which is why, sometimes, a team has to make first-to-accept offers.

Here’s what I know, not what I hear, but what I know, first hand knowledge. Where that site gets there information I have no idea, but Epenesa was NEVER contacted by U-H, NEVER, not once, no call, no visit, no conversation. If someone or other sources tell you otherwise, then I call “liar”. I KNOW that.

Your assumption on my message is correct. I’d love to see all the top kids stay home and play for U-H, I really would. However, I also understand some young kids decision to really want to venture out and go to the mainland, I absolutely support that as well. In fact, I tend to cheer for mainland schools that play Hawaii kids.
My problem is, even though, for example kids like Schwenke wants to go away, Hawaii still needs to recruit him. Matter of fact, Hawaii should be first on all the local division-1 talent. My problem is, how the hell can U-H be last on some of these kids, worse yet, invisible. That’s the issue.
Show the Hawaii kids, their schools and their coaches some love. That infact, is what recruiting is all about. You don’t think most of these high school coaches want U-H recruiting their players…? They do.
And that is what gets them to help U-H recruit the local kids. FACT.
Another fact, Hawaii is NOT doing that.
You can make all the excuses you want…numbers game, first-to-accept offers, tricky math, it’s all hog-wash, crap basically.
Make a list of the all the top talent, and trust me, when they’re sophomores and juniors EVERYBODY knows who they are, EVERYBODY, except it seems, University of Hawaii. Stick to that list and RECRUIT the hell of out that list.
Pretty simple, but McMackin, well, for him it seems, too simple.
Re #66: I know Epenesa’s family and it’s not so much if he was on Hawaii’s radar it’s more like Hawaii was never on his and that first hand he was going mainland all along.

There are a lot of things that go on behind the scenes that most aren’t privvy.
For instance, there was a family member grumbling last year that UH wasn’t going after a prospect heavily.
The real story? The prospect wanted to get away from that family member.

I understand Epenesa was going away all along. But, in my opinion and in the opinion of many high school coaches and players themselves, U-H should still have recruited one of the top talents in the state. Who knows, one day they may change a kids mind, sway him the Warriors way. Many coaches feel if their kids aren’t getting recruited by U-H, for whatever excuse, um, reason they come up with, then my their kids just aren’t good enough in U’H’s eyes.
There also were a couple of prospects who had slim-to-none chances of being eligible. Schools sign these players with the hope they will make it but with the reality they probably won’t. But by signing, at least they can offer guidance, such as helping them pick a junior college or a non-football school where they can work on their grades.
I remember there was a Pac-10 school that signed a bunch of local prospects they knew would never play for them as freshmen.

Kana was in a major operation in the month of Nov. where he almost lost his life. He is out of the woods now and on the road to recovery. We will go with my daughter and her family with mis momo. We go there for a few days and return since we travel standby onmy daughter’s job on Hawaiian Air. On this short trips, we are usually lucky and do come home in the black most time, but even if we deposit some, it is no big deal for it did not cost us much to getr there and we feel that we are winners every time..

Eh no make could be simply the fact of why take time and effort recruiting someone who has no intent on entetaining the idea of staying home, I can understand if he showed interest and then was snubbed but this was definetly not the case, in my opinio the Head Coach is not an idiot because he made the right decision to concentrate on recruits who do wanna come here.

I’m a big NY Mets fan because I lived in Long Island, NY as an impressionable 8-yr old in 1969 when my dad was stationed there in the Navy. I’m a D-backs fan, except when the Mets come to town since I remain loyal to my first team and I don’t like the Yankees.

For whatever reason a kid wants to go away for college, the worst thing is when they want to go away because they think they can get a better education elsewhere.
I could care less that a woman in a stupid hat attends a volleyball game or gives the football team a pep talk. Her support is nice, but in case she hasn’t noticed, there’s a lot of problems at her school. Give the pep talk to the academic deans and the research directors. Help with the pay negotiations. Figure out how her students can actually graduate in four years. It may not be realistic, but the best recruiting tool and reason for students to attend UH should be that they will receive the best education. Period. JMHO.

Money is a huge factor. Just look at the California schools, where tuition is going way up.
The main thing, though, is if a school can get you a job.
In that regard, Miano has done a good job starting the UH Pro Day.
If UH can get more guys into the pros, it will be attractive to more prospects.
For a local kid who wants to stay home after his/her playing days, UH makes a lot of sense…like I said before it’s not a 4-year commitment as much as a 40-year decision.

Tuberville to TTU is a big shift in offensive philosophy.
I am very, very happy that Inoke was named to one of the GA spots! I’ve been hoping that he would be named a GA for a long time–UH needs more coaches on offense and Inoke played QB, RB, and specials teams for UH. Even more importantly, Inoke has showed excellent character and true leadership throughout his career…I’m sure that he’ll do a great job at UH.
Inoke was already admitted to UH’s graduate school, so he can start in time for the Spring semester. Hopefully UH will have the other GA in place before Fall Camp. Having both GAs in time for the Spring would be nice.
I was surprised to find out how much this plays a role in a University program’s ranking. I recently read somewhere that UH’s lawschool ranks pretty low because it only finds jobs for about 60% of its graduates.

el guapo – # 91 – don’t forget that the contract is between the faculty at *all* the campuses, including the community colleges, and the UH system admin, meaning the pres. I talked to a faculty member the other week who was in the minority and voted for the pay cuts, believing that they needed to share in the pain. I will make this generalization and I know there are exceptions, so don’t take my head off. The ivory tower mentality is alive and well at UH and at many other institutions. Many faculty who have never worked outside of academia have no concept of the outside world. I worked at UH for 14 years and will *not* go back. The politics in academia is second only to the politics of the “real” politicians.
…so is the ball easier to catch in Cincy than in Cleveland?
I’ve seen statistics that said that 75% or more of the high schools in Texas run the spread offense. The 7-on-7 passing competitions in the offseason are a factor for this. If Texas Tech’s offense is going to change significantly under Tuberville, then there will be a LOT of QBs/WRs who might not fit their new offense but would fit an offense like UH’s. Hopefully UH can get a pipeline going into Texas.

I’ve talked with several professors at UH and morale is not good from what I was told. The cuts on top of the already too limited funding and deteriorating facilities are having an effect on the quality of education from what I was told. That is really sad to me…and I’m sure that parents take note of UH’s academic ranking. That is another thing that Mack and the rest of UH’s coaches have to overcome in recruiting.
I am on the Epanesa bandwagon too. He is a difference maker on the field. And I was somewhat critical of UH for not offering, but mostly puzzled. Then someone whispered something in my ear, and I shup up. There are two sidea to every story, and like the Tsai-master says, we ain’t privy to most stuff, and as inquisitive as some of us are, it is actually for the better. Recruiting is way too crazy already without whispers on the street. I think UH does an adequate job of recruiting, given that we are in the Pacific. We are not nearly the judges of talent, however, as the great Boise State Dynasty.
BSU gets my vote for best team in the country.

Assuming solutions have to come from within, UH needs a big year from Brett Leonard, Clayton Laurel, Adrian Thomas, Paipai Falemalu, Earvin Sione, Geordon Hanohano, Aaron Brown, Corey Paredes, Steven Christian, Lewis Walker.

Trying to help UH. As fans we can do it financially, by attending games, and making an atmosphere that will entice recruits to come. It definately won’t be the equipment at UH, so it has to be us. I have some ideas about helping with recruiting (no, not giving the players SUVs like some schools…). Also, I’m thinking that if UH started having a best available seating on the day of the game free for students, $1 for alumni, and $5 for the rest of us it will help bring more fans, noise, and money to all of the sports.

Bottomline remains. Come the next season, there needs to be a cultural shift within the entire team. The mentality has to be, we’re not good enough to just show up and play. WE have to work our collective rears off during off season, trust in each other, build a collective new view of Warrior football. WE practice, we prepare we play, we belong.
If we see the same attitude, level of execution and preparation, we will see what we saw in years past, unnecessary celebration when a big hit is delivered or touchdown made, simply because the team does not feel that they belong there. When the culture is we belong, you don’t have to celebrate unnecessarily, because anything less is unacceptable.
Look at BSU and other successful programs, they play like they belong.
Right now, we’ve been playing like showing up is enough… and it shows.
When we play and get the results because we belong, the recruits will come, and those we want to stay at home will stay. until then, UH is not a high choice.
Time for JD, Mac and the rest to put, everything else is simply noise.

Regarding making someone improve things to annodah person’s satisfaction…
Focusing only on what’s not good or not right too much can be so negative-sounding that it could tend to bring morale down &/or turn someone off from listening to annodah person’s ideas no matter how good they may be.
Perhaps if we want a more productive change, we could focus on communicating a positive vision.
What this means?
Talk story about your vision, or how you’d like to see things and why.
Obviously if whomever you want to do things your way is not doing things the way you see fit, all you can hope for is that they decide to take some time to digest your vision, validate your ideas to see whether and which of your ideas they’d want to incorporate before making any changes.
Micromanaging the whomever’s process means we are forcing upon them exactly how they need to thing regarding any whos/whats/whens/wheres/whys/whoms/hows they have to do things and think.
So my opinion is simply –
Paint them your vision and if they are brave and strong enough to click with and/or agree with even parts of your vision, they will eventually figure out how to resolve the discrepancies you see and may decide change things more to the way you see them.

I’ll try to do one here. Here are my main points:
1. UH needs better recruiting. We can help by improving the playing atmosphere, attending games, and even asking that cousin’s, auntie’s, co-worker’s ex-roommate that might know a 4 or 5 star recruit in the Midwest somewhere to pt in a good word for UH
2. More money. JD said it a couple days ago that finances are down. The whole state is down. I have a few ideas on how to make some money for the team including the fast lane system like that which was used for the baseball games last year. This fast lane would however give best seats available for free to students the day of the game, as well as $1 for alumni, and $5 for general admission. With 27,000 seats to fill on average, don’t you think we can fill much more of that if the seats bought at the gate were only $5? I showed how this could have added up to $1.75M to the budget last year alone.I address the regular ticket prices/season ticket holders etc in the blog.
3. More money continued. As fans, most of us are livign tight as it is. I have a few ideas that cost nothing for you and me, but will still help UH. One method can earn each person $100 in a day, no cost to anyone. If we could get 1,000 people to earn that $100, that is a potential 1,000 season tickets we could purchase. Along with that, a 20% bonus comes to the group which I will use to purchase tickets to give away to the blog readers. Sort of manini money on the grand scale, but it costs us nothing and helps the school. Why not, right?

It is not my feeling that the team just showed up and played. I believe the team was hurt by poor recruiting in previous years which amplified the injuries to key players. We won four out of our last five games which included a good Navy team. This ain’t just showing up to play. It appears some don’t appreciate the situation the team was in when JJ left. I guess I sound like an apologist for the coaching staff and maybe I am, but I still remember when the crowd used to boo JJ, and now he’s regarded by some here as some kind of genius. The grass might be greener on that other hill, but I’m sticking with this hill cause I believe with a little water this hill will be just as green.
One more thing, I have been reading with great interest the return of Bulla’s son Ryan. Would Ryan be returning to Hawaii to be a part of a team with a poor attitude? Is Ryan delusional? I’m sure Ryan has friends on the Warriors team. I have to believe Ryan has returned because he wants to wear the Warrior uniform and he sees this as a good opportunity for himself. I don’t believe Ryan shares the ( the coaches are idiots ) feeling that some of you may have. If Ryan believes he is coming back to a good situation then I have to believe things aren’t as bad as some make it to be.

Funaki completed his eligibility this past season. He is attending the

There’s an assumption that BSU and other programs are doing things that UH isn’t.
Not quite.
That number floated about 100 percent participation during the offseason. That came from a comment during the interview portion at the WAC Media function. But guess what? I’ve asked every player attending WAC Media sessions, and each said his team has 100 percent participation.
They are all correct.
Every team gets a list of “suggestions” for the offseason: how much time to spend in the weight room, how many sprints to run, etc. There are workout periods at every point of the day. I mean, you can do your workout in California, and it still counts.
I don’t want anyone to think that there are 105 guys lifting together, then conducting workouts together.
That just isn’t the case.
The reason people think they have a better understanding is because UH’s student-athletes are more accessible. This is an island. Practices are open. The school is open.
BSU, Nevada, etc. don’t offer such access. In fact, those schools go out of their way to hide stuff from fan-run blogs and Web sites. Certainly, BSU isn’t allowing fans to shoot pictures of Kellen Moore throwing passes during the offseason.
Every team has good points and faults.
Perception is everything.
UH’s main problem last year was the list of injured players — Greg Alexander, Laupepa Letuli, Rodney Bradley, Brashton Satele, Fetaiagogo Fonoti, Aaron Brown.
For all of us who have attended practices, I don’t think lack of passion was a problem.

Bpew coach Dana mentioned that the girls are working hard, have cut down on TO to about 20 a game which is huge for them. Needs further improvement but in slow steps. They are struggling with the press. The other teams are just to quick and their players are playing faster but as UH players develop more chemistry to the coach’s system they will do better. Coach Dana brought in two players, Shawna and Brungaite this year, and only Dita graduates from this season’s team, what we see is what we get for 2 years.

It bothers me that John Estes & Blaze Soares did not get invites to the Combine. I thought John Estes was on everyone’s radar and that he’d be drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round (if 1st was out of the question, depending on teams’ needs). Is this a harbinger of being drafted lower?? I hope not.
It wouldn’t be the first time that the NFL has not invited worthy candidates.
As for drafting purposes, it’s very evident that the NFL often values potential over achievement. Case in point: Joe Flacco (the prototype NFL QB wet-dream) who played Division 2 competition (Div.1AA, whatever) was crushed in every pre-draft competition by Colt Brennan except for Longest Throw (at one contest). Result: !st round + 30-40 Million. Colt: Had the best season ever in NCAA history of any QB.
Result-low round pick, approx. 1.2 Million over 3 years and only a half-hearted look / opportunity by an incompetent coach who could not figure a way to maximize & integrate Colt’s gifts into his (alleged) offense.
Oh, and let’s not forget the Ryan Leaf fiasco who Mel Kiper Jr. was so enamored with!
Both hoops teams have to take care of the ball. If you can’t get the ball in play – it doesn’t matter how good the rest of your team/players might be.
From the little that I’ve seen…. I would try to give Ayabe more PT. I can’t ID any PG for the men’s team. 🙄

Funaki will be an outstanding coach one day for now though he will learn the ropes, the real thing I’m excited about though is with him sticking around we have a better chance of landing Kahuku kids cause out there he is a football icon,my friend was born and raised out there he played with Funaki and he says the kids in Kahuku and Laie look up to him alot.
Sounds like Oregon State might be offering Mike Riley a lifetime contract. I wonder if that would be a first in Div 1 football. I hadn’t realized that Mike Riley was actually from Corvallis.
The columnist makes a good point about USC — besides the money it would seem that the USC job would be a hard slog. They have had protracted periods of mediocrity but Pete Carroll has set the bar pretty high recently and a coach would be walking into a situation where expectations are very very high. Harbaugh, for instance, would be nuts to be interested in the job. He has a much better situation going at Stanford. Hard to see how someone like Chris Peterson would be interested either. Money isn’t everything.

Tremendous start for the Men’s VB team! Congrats to the Warriors
and Coach Wade. This already gives them brownie points nationally, and will be invaluable in recruiting. Not to mention the boost in confidence. What’s even more encouraging is that there’s still room for improvement and I think it’s a scary proposition for other teams if Hawaii can play even better down the line.
If this tournament is any indication, this year will be an exciting one for Coach Wade and the VB team! Should have beaten Penn State last night. Can’t wait until the next game.
Slugger – you must have a twin because I swear that I saw you in the upper area for the USC match although I did see you sitting with Myki and Sjmacro during the first match in the lower level. We also sat in the lower level on the other side of the court. Crazy night – especially with the Dancing Guy. And yes, the rowdy, raucus crowd did help.
It’ll be THREE weeks before the men will be back amongst us. But the women’s basketball team plays on Wednesday.
NOTE: In February, there will 26 different sporting events on campus featuring men’s and women’s basketball, men’s volleyball, women’s softball, and men’s baseball. Wow!

yes money isnt EVERYTHING but it sure is a HUGE something and its USC….big time, big name, big program, big money, big support ESPECIALLY after the house that Carroll built. Peterson whether Boise likes it or not will be lured to another program and I for one think USC might be that program.
Look at Houston Nutt as an example of what a “Boise head coach” is capable of once in a big conference. Ole Miss isn’t a push over.
I would be extremely surprised if 1) USC does not show any interest in Peterson and 2) Peterson showing absolutely no interesting in USC.
Honestly I guess part of me wants Peterson out of Boise so that we can stand a chance at beating them every year (they are probably the only solid thing blocking us from winning the WAC on a yearly basis.)… haha I know i know its selfish but hey I rather have him away from the WAC than right smack in it dominating and putting the rout on Hawaii and everyone else year in and out. 🙁 The guy is just too darn good at what he does for his own good imo.
Then again truth is stranger than fiction and if Peterson decides that Boise is ‘the place’ he wants to be then Boise has found themselves something both special and something to count their blessings on.
Given the current situation of NCAA sanctions, a “low period” (if you can even call it that) in USC football….I think USC spares no expense for their next coach. My prediction if you can even call it that is Peterson as one of the top candidates or a Belichick or Bill Walsh related coach.

Having lived in the LA area in my younger years, I wouldn’t want to coach anywhere in that area; it’s no paradise, nor a place I’d want to raise young children.
