The wonder years
While I was pretending to work yesterday, I noticed my cohorts working on end-of -decade stories.
Decade is ending?
This is what happens when your cell phone is your watch. It seemed like only yesterday we assigned a business writer to exclusively report on Y2K. The world was supposed to go into chaos when the calendar struck ’00 and our computers were to read it as “1900.” Of course, I never understood why on New Year’s 1999 the computers didn’t read it as 1899. But I digress. Then again, it was a decade ago when our entire sports department had only one computer that connected to the Internet.
As my cohorts tell me, it was quite a decade. Jessica Simpson said: “Is this chicken, what I have, or is this fish? I know it’s tuna, but it says, ‘Chicken of the Sea.'” Later in the decade, Tara Reid said: “I make Jessica Simpson look like a rock scientist.”
And, yes, my cohorts tell me the decade brought us American Idol, Project Runway, Survivor, Lost, MySpace, Twitter, Facebook and the hanging chad. (I wonder what ever happened to Friendster, MySpace’s predecessor?) Oh, and blogs.
But it also had to be the most entertaining — and successful — decade in UH football history, right? June Jones. Rolo the quarterback. Tim Chang. H. The Warriors, and The Warrior. The Hawaii Bowl. Ashley Lelie. Travis LaBoy. Vince Manuwai. The 220s. Chad Owens. The King (Samson Satele), Nasti and the Heisman Trophy finalist (Colt Brennan). Davone and Ryan. Grice-Mullins and Grice Mullen. Colt mania. Eo Na Toa. The Iceman. The haka. The ha‘a. The haka again. “I’ve never known a Texan to back down from a fight before. I guess their coach isn’t from Texas.” “I decided to come back for my senior year.” “We wanted it badder.” “Balls to the walls.” The Sugar Bowl. Hawai‘i Pono‘i. Coach Mack. Rolo the coach. Princess Leila. Princess Leila’s videos. Adam and Solly. Blaze. Estacio. Salas …
Enjoy the moments. You don’t have to be a rock scientist to know they pass quickly.

Our family was humbled by yesterday’s posting and subsequent comments, truly humbled….. we pray that ‘The Beast’ stays healthy, and that he can be a blessing to the Warriors.

Ryan will do whatever it takes, whatever the coaches want, to make a positive contribution to the team. He can’t wait to have the opportunity to be on the Scout team during his redshirt year….all will work out for the best. We just are grateful and feel blessed to have this opportunity. Wow… 10 years ago I had as many computers connected to the internet as the Tizer did.
Come to think of it… I had already met my wife online the year before.. She was in Paris working for Compuserve and I was here in Hawaii trying to get as much free time online by being a volunteer trouble shooter for several forums on Compuserve as well as a sysop for a few chat rooms. I believe it was $3.45 an hour to be online and there was no broadband.
Compuserve tried to bill me $700 one month. Claimed I was online 24 hours a day for weeks.
Telephone company offered long distance and international packages through various services. If you didn’t sign up for one, every call would cost you an arm and a leg. I remember switching services from Sprint to AT&T one month and the phone company screwed up… They ended up billing me $965 for long distance calls because they said I wasn’t signed up for any package…
Thank goodness those days are behind us.
Now my cell phone provides us with enough long distance minutes for all our personal and business use and one telephone card a month covers our international call needs.
lets not forget the birth of this blog and the tsaiko ohana!
I know this is an oxymoron, but it’s time to start making new memories.

-pivotal seasons for warrior football and rainbow warrior basketball coaching staffs.
-great anticipation for women’s basketball as we seem to be getting it right with dana takahara-dias.
-even further anticipation ahead with men’s volleyball led by charlie wade and a new found hero in umlauft. i think they will surprise many.
-another pivotal season for baseball rainbows. at least we got some of the local boys in the house now.
-really looking forward to wahine volleyball team next year as we return many and begin our transition with a much larger lineup.

I agree. Hearing from the former kids really makes my day. Last month one called from Korea where he finally realized I was right all along. I had been telling him to seriously look into teaching and research. But he was more interested, shockingly, in making money with his EE. While in Korea it finally dawned on him that he liked helping others. Duh.
He is now looking at pursuing an MEd and, eventually, a PhD in educational research with an emphasis in childhood cognitive reasoning and development. I think he will end up at either UW or OSU.

Cravens signs in February because he enrolls in June.
He’s not a mid-year guy.

Interesting comment about 10 years ago and computers on the internet. By then I had 150+ on the internet at my elementary school. But no telephones. A building shared one phone line. We discussed telephony over IP back then too. Most schools have phone systems now, but the advent of cell phones and consequent technologies is major.
ST — ten years from now, you might write, “Back in 2009 at the old ’tiser when we had an physical office, we only had laptops and wireless modems…a few of us had iPhones/blackberry/etc. …”. 🙂

1. Real news is depressing — Unless you consider the Redskins-Giants game last week worse than an economic collapse or an earthquake.
2. It holds powerful people accountable — When Jim Bowden shows up at spring training on a Segway, TWT photographers were there to document his stupidity.
3. ESPN is powerful enough — Good luck getting your fix of Capitals news from a network that doesn’t care about hockey.

When I first started at the paper, in 1981, we could only make long-distance phone calls through the operator. But she didn’t work on weekends. So we had to go into the managing editor’s office to call our Neighbor Island correspondents for their high school polls.
One of our bosses, Mike Middlesworth, was in charge of buying us computers. Our first laptop was a Sony. The screen was a narrow strip, and you could only see one line of type. When Andy Yamaguchi covered the 1984 Olympics, he brought along a portable typewriter and that laptop. He’d write his stories on the typewriter, then punch them into the laptop.
Soon after, Radio Shack came out with laptops that had a screen that showed up to eight lines. One of our editors, Clyde, asked Middlesworth if we could use the laptops as a business expense. Middlesworth said no. So all of the sports writers — me, Dave Koga, Ferd Lewis, Bart Asato, Dennis Anderson, etc. — bought our own Radio Shack laptops. Since we couldn’t get the writeoff, we didn’t have to share our laptops with the rest of the newsroom.
Back in 1999, we had desktop computers that were obsolete. Know how you don’t realize you’re poor until somebody mentions it? Micah Kroeger’s wife came into the sports department, and she said: “Stevie, your computer (type) is in green and white.” Then she said, “Your computer doesn’t have a mouse.”
We’ve come a long way.
The young’uns don’t understand. But the old futs really appreciate what we have now.
And before I forget, Congratulations to HawaiianBod for winning the Blog Bowl Fantasy Football league. He beat the defending champ Jason in the championship game.
Standford Okie game getting out of hand.. the Sooners are really ticked off about a controversial call… penalities abound.. hee haw..

Unfortunate about the Washington Times doing away with the Sports section…..I can’t see any paper without the Sports, but they’re already down to 5-days-per-week distribution and are considering ending printing and going solely online if their financial position doesn’t improve.

A Safe New Year’s Eve and Day to all of you. Saturn the Dog is cowering in his dog house because of the noise while the cats have all gone into closets and cupboards until tomorrow morning.
The Wahine basketball team is a winner no matter what the W-L record will be two-plus months from now. Congratulations for the coaching staff as well as the players for doing well.
BTW – the month of February is glorious for UH sports – men’s & women’s basketball, men’s volleyball, softball & basebal plus track & field as well as all kinds of water sports.
Finally, the first round of 2010 legislative $$$$ briefings for UH and Aloha Stadium have been set, Perhaps someone from the Honolulu Advertiser’s Sports Department might want to check them out to see what is probably going to happen there.
Again, be prepared for a huge bump in the General Excise Tax – or at least discussions about it.

Another major change in typing for us “old futs”– parents throughout the 1990’s thought that keyboarding was important to their child’s success. (I disagreed, preferring to teach manipulation/use of the apps). Today, look at young ‘uns picking at the small keyboards of hand- held devices or typing into an iPhone with their two thumbs… 😐
Somebody is going to startup a thumb-typing and picking proficiency institute someday. 😆

I remember when finding the passcode and IDs to run your codes on a higher priority was the difference between and A and a B… and how we loved making all that ascii art using someone else’s account.
Looking at what the Navy offense is doing to the Missouri defense, I believe the Warriors defensive coaching staff is superb. Congratulations to Navy and Coaches Ken and Ivan! A very well executed game.
I’m talking about the computers with the green-ish screen, only a keyboard and no mouse (so everything was keyboard command).
I remember in preschool, my teacher would wake me up so I could play on the computer. Same type of computer, with 5.25″ floppies. I thought playing Gizmos and Gadgets on a Mac in the 3rd grade was so amazing, compared to playing Carmen Sandiego with those 5.25″ floppies.
Oh yeah, and I’m too young to know anything about those punch card computers in Keller that everyone likes to tell me about. 😀
Geez, Jason, my original Mac is older than you. Bought for around $2K in Oct 1984 w/ no hard drive and a box of single-sided 3.5″ disks was $50(?). I think the surge suppressor was pretty expensive too. That Mac is still somewhere in my house.

The thing that bites me is lying. Tiger Woods lied, Urban Meyer lied about his chest pains. Everybody lies. I’ve lied. Some lies more than others. We are all sinners and won’t survive. So with this new year upon us, let’s try to be honest and start the year right for a change. The good part about the new year is that we can start fresh and we can be hopeful and optimistic about the future. That is our nature, that things will get better. But, will it?
It’s in the hands of the coaches and the players. As fans, our job is to support the program in any way we can. So, the recruits, the strength coaches, conditioning, off season workouts, spring practice, etc, etc. etc. Who steps up, and who wants it the most? Do the players stay healthy? Will the team be ready for USC for the opener? And on the road to Army and Colorado before coming home? Will they be 3-0 or 0-3 out of the gate? It’s not too long before the end of August. Between now and then we can have a lot of discussion about the state of UH football. Two things are clear at this point: Wisconsin is a very, very good football team and should be in the top 20 in the final poll. Two, Navy is very good, 10 wins in a season is impressive. UH could have been good, but the team was inconsistent. The good, road blowout against Wash. St., home win against Utah State, complete game win against Navy. The bad, at Las Vegas which we should have won, at La Tech when we were winning at the half, bad loss against Fresno St. at home,
loss at Nevada when we were up 14-0. It could have been, but……

Loud booms resonate in our valley and it sounds like 81mm and 4.5 heavy mortar rounds or 105 artillery rounds, but this can not be so because it is New Years eve and the Marines have the day off.
Beside, Pres Obama is here and they would not dare train on this day or tomorrow.
Only exception is our military forces overseas in the Middle East where every day is a “combat day”. To all of them, stay safe and keep the peace and come home soon.

Figure that his research while a Junior in Florida, his desire to surf, his intent to show teams his capabilities, and Kahuku’s need for a kicker brought him to the Islands. May as well stay for college!

Gotta hand it to Navy. Their 10th win today should make a statement to all doubters about how good they were this season. This is why UH’s win over them should show some of the doubters how good UH can play when they’re firing on all cylinders. Similarly, when they are not, you have games like the Boise State & Wisconsin losses. A few games were lost simply becasue we lacked a decent kicker (which I hope will be rectified in the off-season, pretty please).
Regarding the Wisconsin game, I’d like to know what anyone / everyone can do to assure that celebratory & familial ceremonies for Seniors are relegated to its rightful place at the END of the game. I don’t feel that having families & relatives awaiting players with leis at the BEGINNING of the game and having all those bittersweet & nostalgiac emotions flooding through the players is conducive to having the right frame of mind when you’re trying to get jacked against a motivated & prepared opponent. If this was the brainchild of the Stadium Authority or Jim Donovan, they should be shot! Sorry for the rant, but I honestly feel if someone doesn’t speak up, that travesty will be repeated next year, too.

i agree regarding the pre game activities at the Wisconsin game… too much of a distraction, and i know where ‘The Beast’ goes to mentally prepare for battle is a very dark and ugly place.
you’d like this story, he was coming off an injury and missed three games. he’s getting all nutz in the locker room before playing Eastern Washington, i mean they said he was going psychotic. one of the DB’s bumped into him when he was in a frenzy, he turns around and starts screaming at this guy, grabs him and tries to stuff him in a locker. they had to pull him off of the guy and convince him that he was a team mate……long story short, 3 sacks and 4 tackles for loss later, he was awarded Big Sky Defensive Player of the week…..thought that funnier than heck. but i know what you mean about mental preparation….it is a battle zone out there, nothing less, it’s either win or lose, live or die….very basic parameters.
so pre game activities, especially BIG games need to be carefully reviewed, and i think in hindsight, we could have done something else against Wisconsin.

Thanks for sharing that story about the Beast; I luv it! And if everybody had been in the locker room (prior to the Wisconsin) doing a similar type of mental prep like your son, I seriously doubt the score would’ve been as disparate. I’m a realist & I’m not going to say UH would’ve won that game (that would be a disservice as to how prepared Wisconsin was)-I’m just saying the score would probably not have been a blow-out.
One more thing. I know some like it when the team does the haka / ha’a
before the game. I would much rather have them do it AFTER the game as it always seems to emotionally drain them (when done at the beginning). Also, I’d like them to do it at the end to reward those that stay ’til the very end of the games whether the team is winning or losing.

Betty and I send our warmest feelings of caring and sharing with the rest of the ohana. It is a rare gift of sharing and loving that we have the privilege of sharing with the rest of the Tsaikos.
While the smiles and laughter of sharing time with friends have been premium, we also can’t forget the wonderful contributions of our Tsaikos expats. I can think of Paoha Boy, TChahng, SojuNTaegu, 22Tokyo, Garett, MasaBoy, Wafan, and so many others who contribute to our world…forgive me for not naming everyone.

One of Lori’s close friends from high school works at Pearl Harbor now. Jennifer was using the gym that her work gives her access to and was shocked yesterday when Pres. Obama came to the gym for a workout! She said that he was very nice, shook her hand, made pleasant conversation while waiting his turn for a machine, and that the Secret Service being there was kind of weird to her.
Two things that surprised her the most:
1. That the Secret Service didn’t make everybody leave when the President went to the gym for his workout.
2. That Pres. Obama waited patiently for his turn at a machine–he had done a set and she went to use the machine after him just so that she could work out on the machine after he used it. When she was in the middle of her set she realized that he was waiting to do another set at the machine and she was interrupting his workout. She apologized to him and offered to let him use the machine, but he told her not to worry and that she should finish up with the machine.

Rolling up to the end of 2009, here in waikiki protecting the natives from the tourists, stay out of waikiki…..it is nothing short of Armageddon, Soddom & Gomorrah, and everything else….insanity in the flesh.
2010 will be upon us in less than an hour and 2009 will come to a close; Thank God for all of the blessings, and also thank God for the challenges that stretched our faith and our patience….Give thanks.
There is a great book out, called ‘The Richest Man in Town’ by VJ Smith, you’ll have to google it, not in book stores. It’s a story about Marty, and i’ll leave it at that…..but the gist of the book are the following 3 Life Lessons…..and I am going to try and remember them in the coming year.
3 Life Lessons
1) Relationships matter most
2) Try to do a little more,
3) Only YOU can make YOU happy.
Some may say that it is too simplistic….I’m an old fart, I like simple….
From the Eastman ohana to everyone out there, even those that don’t like me, I wish only the best for you in 2010. We are destined to bless, and may this coming year surpass all of your expectations….so that you may bless others abundantly.
