    No question…Go Warriors!

  2. HawaiiMongoose November 7, 2016 12:54 pm

Question for Coach Rolo: Although this week’s game with Boise State will be played at Aloha Stadium, you’ve coached against the Broncos in games played at Boise. Do you feel the blue turf gives the Broncos an advantage beyond the normal home-field advantage? Is the different look a distraction for visiting players who aren’t used to it?

  3. cocopipibu November 7, 2016 1:25 pm

    Go Bows!!!

  4. Ron November 7, 2016 1:32 pm

Do we have anyone else on the squad other than Ulu-Perry who probably would be a starter/ or play signifiant minutes if they were eligible this year?

  5. UH Fan For Life November 7, 2016 1:34 pm

Coach Rolo, how do the Michigan and San Diego State defenses compare in terms of scheme and talent in the D-line, linebackers, and secondary?

  6. Bryson November 7, 2016 1:35 pm

Coach Rolo do you plan on working with the QB’S on moving the defense with their eyes and not staring down their primary target

  7. WarriorNY November 7, 2016 1:36 pm

My question is do you see Zwahlen getting more game reps in the future despite not having the greatest performance against SDS?

  8. jeezy33 November 7, 2016 1:40 pm

    Coach Rolo,
Any thoughts about Utilizing Paul Harris in motion into the slot in a 5 wide set to see if we can get him 1 on 1 match ups vs LBs? Same goes for Ursua. Could we start him in backfield, motion him to see if we can get LBs or safeties to cover him 1 on 1. This offense needs to find more ways to attack mismatches.

  9. letsgowarriors November 7, 2016 1:50 pm

how could we dont use more bubble screens or shoots to the slotbacks? gets the ball out of Brown’s hand quicker and into the hands of our playmakers in space. we made a living off of that w Salas and Pilares.

  10. letsgowarriors November 7, 2016 1:50 pm

    how come*

  11. tom-warriornation November 7, 2016 2:27 pm

For the first offensive play of the game (and the 2nd half); can we have the entire 2nd unit (including QB) go in together for 1 to 2 plays? That would greatly improve the morale of the whole team; just imagine if they make a big play–that would pump up the whole crowd and the starters, right?? Just imagine how excited a 2nd stringer would be; just knowing that he will actually go into the game!

Also, let’s utilize our WR’s (who were former QB’s to pass on some trick plays) to keep the defenses off balance.

  12. kapakahi November 7, 2016 2:27 pm

    Coach,

For this Saturday’s day game against Boise State, will you switching sides of the field so that UH will be on the Makai side of the field (in the shade for most of the game) so that Boise State will be on the Mauka side of the field (in the sun for most of the game)?

  13. 808Surfer November 7, 2016 2:36 pm

Our Defensive Coach is wondering why our D always start slow? Please keep an open mind: I think you should try pre-game warm ups at a higher speed. All the other teams that come into Aloha Stadium are running, passing, receiving, etc. at high to almost full speed. The home team warms up at less that half speed so you can’t expect to start at full speed, it won’t happen mentally and physically. Warm up at a higher tempo!

  14. cocobean November 7, 2016 2:40 pm

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten from someone you look up to since the SDSU game?

  15. Former UH Athete November 7, 2016 2:49 pm

    Coach,

What is the message to the boys this week following, in my observation, a listless performance vs SDSU, and with solid Boise St coming to town?

  16. Buffoman November 7, 2016 2:50 pm

Teams with tight ends appear to have a good number of plays that include them in a diverse passing attack. Are you satisfied with the production from our tight ends in your schemes or feel that they may not be necessary (as during the JJ period) and eliminate them going forward. Less running attack more passing.

  17. z November 7, 2016 3:05 pm

    Coach

How many passes do a receiver have to drop before he is replaced?
How many fumbles do a player have to have before he is replaced?
How many interceptions do a player have to have before he is replaced?
Are we so thin that we are unable to replace them?

  18. Inyoface November 7, 2016 3:08 pm

QB position might open back up in the off-season if Dru doesn’t do well in the last 3 games.

  19. z November 7, 2016 3:28 pm

    13. Team as a whole slow to align. Wish coach would get on them to be quicker. It also bothers me when offense is slow to get plays, slow to align, then looks to the sideline to get the call, then waits to make line calls, then hopefully gets the ball snapped before time runs out.

I remember some DII teams we use to play looked really well organized on the field of play.

  20. Kris November 7, 2016 3:29 pm

What happened to the run n shoot? Why isn’t that the offense Coach Rolo uses anymore? Thanks!

  21. whitey November 7, 2016 3:57 pm

Kris, great question to ask. Maybe should be run and/or throw. Whatever offense the Warriors are using this year is the responsibility of the OC and HC and will it be competitive for the last 3 games. I hope they win it all

  22. Ipu Man November 7, 2016 4:09 pm

Have you thought of using a visor for the qb
like Colt Brennan used so as not to telegraph
    where he’s looking?

  23. H-Man November 7, 2016 4:11 pm

Z, I agree the offense is very slow in aligning for the next play. Gives the appearance they are confused. Need to pick it up. All they’re doing is allowing the defense more time to align and rest. If our O-linemen are getting gassed, start rotating players. Right?

  24. islandman November 7, 2016 4:14 pm

Coach, why does it take so long to snap the ball for almost every play ?

  25. kapakahi November 7, 2016 5:03 pm

    Coach,

While there is always some tweeking and/or addition of offensive plays, what percentage of the overall offense playbook has been installed thus far for this first season?

  26. Jeezy33 November 7, 2016 5:28 pm

    24. Playbook should never be complete. I’m a firm believer that each week, a defense we face will have a weakness.. Its our coaches job to find a specific weakness on that defense and attack it or find a way to create mismatches.

If we need to soften the middle of the field, there should be packages in which Ewaliko gets on the field to beat the safeties deep and keep them from stacking the box.
Our 2 best players in space to make guys miss are Paul Harris and John Ursua. If there is ways to get them the ball in the 5-10 yard range, allowing them to make defenders miss, it needs to be done.

  27. kalua pig November 7, 2016 5:35 pm

coach rolo, have you put on a little weight?

  28. Jenny Talls November 7, 2016 6:19 pm

What’s your philosophy on WR rotation? I know we seemingly have a lot of playmakers on paper and we have been rotating them in, but during the Run N Shoot days, we usually kept to only four or five guys the entire game. Also, how does that affect the receivers?

  29. Old Diver November 7, 2016 6:26 pm

Tell us about the chemistry between the coaches and players.

  30. z November 7, 2016 6:29 pm

    24. I would move Marcus to the slot have run up the middle splitting the safeties giving us more room on the outside. I think Boise did this this to us in a game at Aloha.

  31. Rodney November 7, 2016 6:40 pm

Why not blow the top off the
    coverage with the speed of
    Bernard and Kellen?????????

  32. warriorsanddolphins November 7, 2016 6:47 pm

    Coach Rolo,
When Norm Chow was coach he would rely on transfers (mostly local players) from other schools to come in and get significant playing time. Is there any players from a power 5 school that wish to transfer to Hawaii? How is our local recruiting doing? There are alot of division one caliber recruits in the islands. I wish we can get our share.

  33. Kanani808 November 7, 2016 6:52 pm

What credentials does Brian smith have that made you chose him being offensive coordinator, ya he was a former player but he was a center. Wat did he do after college? We got June Jones coaching at kapolei why wasn’t he offered the OC job? Honestly this offense still has similarities to norm chow era. HB dive, run run pass.

  34. Kanani808 November 7, 2016 6:55 pm

Coach rolo do u ever consider serving as the head coach and offensive coordinator like how June Jones used to do? This offense is going stale, bring back the run n shoot, or even when u were OC a few years ago with moniz and salas more fun to watch

  35. Kanani808 November 7, 2016 7:07 pm

Coach rolo you shud have thought twice about hiring your friends to the coaching staff and go get people with credentials, stutzman and smith are being out coached and learning on the fly. This isn’t madden or NCAA on PlayStation. That being said I still like coach lempa he is proven as when he was here with coach Jones before we did well on defense. Give him time to recruit his own players the d will get better.

  36. SteveM November 7, 2016 7:29 pm

    Go Warriors!
    Beat Boise!

  37. Carl November 7, 2016 7:30 pm

Why are the USAA Pro Bowl banners still hanging at Aloha Stadium? Is USAA a sponsor of UH or Aloha Stadium? Are the banners a reminder of the much needed upgrade for Aloha Stadium in order to the Pro Bowl to return?

  38. Tutu Kane Ale November 7, 2016 8:26 pm

You have these but still not enough SPEED, POWER, COCKINESS, AGILITY, and TEMPO QUICKNESS like for most warriors they need to take it up couple of notches like on or all over the opponents, like flying gone or in their face katoosh, only untouchable or unstoppable not once in awhile but awakening smash mouth all the time; energize explosive charge mode for each and all assignments.

    Good luck against Boise.

  39. esfod November 7, 2016 9:03 pm

Hi coach, I was wondering, would you ever consider using analytics in your strategy as the A’s did in the MLB? Coach Kevin Kelley, although a high school coach, is a big proponent of analytics and maybe you can “borrow” a few ideas.

    GO BOWS!!!

  40. Blu808 November 7, 2016 9:17 pm

Coach Rolo: With the UH men’s basketball team starting there season this Friday, which UH football player do you think would be able to contribute or play on the basketball team if given the opportunity?

  41. burro sabio November 7, 2016 10:14 pm

How is Mel Davis recovering from his health issue?

  42. Akamai Okole November 7, 2016 10:32 pm

    Great Evening All!

Just flew back from San Diego and, boy are my arms….

  43. Akamai Okole November 7, 2016 10:34 pm

    Coach,

Was that an issue with #19’s arm as well on Saturday? It seemed like the inability to stretch the field coupled with severe limitations on the ground left few options.

  44. Akamai Okole November 7, 2016 10:37 pm

    2nd question

After the QB1 switch you guys saw something that you thought would work on the next series.

Did the 73-yarder by them change the plan to use that?

  45. cocobean November 7, 2016 11:03 pm

What struck me after watching Kapolei defeat Punahou was how much Kapolei’s offense had improved since the beginning of the season. All the components were much more in sync. Their offensive line was cohesive in handling their assignments and communicated well. They had cut down on the number of leaks in protection. I can’t say how crisp the receivers ran their routes but it did appear they and the passer were pretty much on the same page. Then they had the Master calling the plays with the calmness of a brain surgeon while the other assistants were caught up in the moment running around with unbridled emotions.

Thinking about that game I came to realize how difficult it is to implement a new offensive system. It’s easy to line up in the R n S formation, or in the Spread Option or in the Pistol. The difficult part is to get everyone on the same page to execute it.

  46. cocobean November 8, 2016 12:08 am

    Mature system vs rudimentary system.

I was impressed with the way SDSU ran sweeps. I’m not sure how many they ran but each seemed a little different. I may be wrong but I don’t think they ran the same sweep play twice. On top of that they had several bootleg play action plays off of that. Twice they hit the tight end for touchdowns and once they had the wideout in motion towards the sweep, stop around the center position and double back into the flat to catch a pass. No doubt the QB had the option to run if he saw fit. What started out as a sweep play has evolved over six seasons into a whole chapter in their play book. And this is just a small section of their play book

At this point I don’t know it’s proper to call our offense rudimentary. But to my untrained eye it appears our coaches only have a fraction of plays SDSU has available to incorporate into their game plan. Just as important they have way fewer plays to switch to plan B if plan A is not working.

  47. Maddog50 November 8, 2016 1:16 am

2 things-which players will return to action this week either through recovery or reinstatement?

Which every down offensive player needs to step forward on offense and take control or lead this unit-it appears there have been a few in the past, but this player needs to stir the “inner Warrior” consistently by actions and words. Who might that be?

  48. LizKauai November 8, 2016 6:12 am

    The talent is there.
    The coaching skills are there.
When team over self becomes manifest, there will be success.
How will they get there and when will they stop looking for leaders and take individual ownership over their own kuleana?
Stay focused. No celebrations until they play the Alma Mater!
    Go (together) Rainbow Warriors!

  49. Buffoman November 8, 2016 6:34 am

Just a distant, no basis observation. It appears that coach Naeole has the respect, like and fear of the players charged to him. Essentially that, in my opinion allows him great freedom to coach to bring out the best in those young men. It seems that he doesn’t care if you were a high school all star or transferred in from a top 5 school. You either meet my expectations or you don’t get on the field. His background in college and the professional ranks give him that ability to be that way.

I still feel that the o-line has been mostly consistent (though they have had lapses) with few false starts, less holding and mental errors. I know that UH football does not have the budget to secure and retain assistant coaches as other programs with bigger budgets have. It would be great going forward to be able to keep coach Naeole and others like him who can command a high level of respect, like and some level of fear which could make recruiting and teaching better.

  50. Maddog50 November 8, 2016 6:49 am

Just finished watching BSU against USU and CSU. Both these were home games for BSU and they easily could have lost both. The offensive line for BSU got shoved around and trick plays fake punts were employed. Rypien Sperbeck and McNichols are the offense. The defense was beat at the LOS numerous times but David Moala is a force in the middle.

Lotsa if’s but this game can be very competitive and a win is more than possible. The punter is a huge weapon. Home game backs against the wall and something to prove, all the components for a great Warrior effort!!!! GoWarriors!!!!!

  51. mileHIwarrior November 8, 2016 7:21 am

    Ahh…gotta love the MMQB banter.

No question here for Coach. Just keep chugging along and putting in the work on the practice field. Better days are ahead.

  52. A-House November 8, 2016 7:53 am

    Coach:

at what point in a QBs career will you allow him to “audible” at the LOS?

will you consider wholesale offense and defense changes at the start of the 2nd qtr, 3rd qtr, and 4th qtr or at any point in a game? it should not affect the outcome of the game, but it would be a sure morale builder for the players.

  53. Warbow November 8, 2016 8:33 am

    Coach Rolo,
Who came up with the offensive game plan against SD St? It was awful. What is the NCAA record for TD’s given up to the other team by an offense?

  54. H-Man November 8, 2016 8:34 am

LizKauai, I like what you wrote. Aloha! Go Warriors !!!

  55. Akamai Okole November 8, 2016 8:42 am

    Great-to-be-an-American Morning All!

    Go Vote!

  56. Akamai Okole November 8, 2016 8:46 am

The OL Coach is great at making adjustments during the game…usually leads to 2nd qtr success. After halftime adjustments are made, it seems that the opposition is often able to regain the physical superiority advantage again. Looking forward to: 1) when the players can make the adjustments themselves on the field and 2) when the physical mismatches are no longer as evident.

Q for Rolo: How far away are we from seeing both of those things happening?

  57. Akamai Okole November 8, 2016 8:47 am

    #52

Already happened. QB1 checked out on a play for a long gainer to Kemp in an earlier home game. (Asked about it on CTC and Rolo said that check was All-Brown.)

  58. Hawaii925 November 8, 2016 8:51 am

We seem three and out fairly often in the last few games. Could the other teams have already figured out that its Lakalaka up the middle, DSJ on delayed handoff with Dru Brown on a fake handoff and double team Kemp always? Any plays which could possibly keep the other team off balance?

  59. Akamai Okole November 8, 2016 8:52 am

    #48

I would agree with the “no celebrations” part to include the pre-game “routine” that is becoming an embarrassing caricature especially on road game blow-outs.

(I can only imagine how the stereotype held in the Zebras’ minds is perpetuated upon seeing a staged, violent [in their eyes] group performance just before the game. No can expect anything but a long stare after any Hawaii player scores and celebrates in the EZ.)

Nuff already…just shut up and play!

  60. Akamai Okole November 8, 2016 8:54 am

    😳

Q for Rolo: Your thoughts about #59?

  61. Manoa Mist November 8, 2016 8:56 am

Agree with Hawaii925. Has Norm Chow come back? We seem to go Lakalaka up the middle, read option, third down pass to Kemp. Punt. Where are the screen plays, the shovel pass, the flat passes to the backs – get guys with speed like Harris out in space. We are being out coached and out schemed on offense. Here’s a question: are we considering a new offensive coordinator?

  62. Akamai Okole November 8, 2016 8:56 am

    #58

When the HC moves a HS LB to the RB group you know the options have become limited.

Any plays which could possibly keep the other team off balance?

Ya! If we had DeMarco Murray as our only available RB!

  63. Akamai Okole November 8, 2016 9:11 am

One last observation from Da Road.

    Football is a team game.

It was getting pretty irritating hearing a Hawaii player’s Ohana cheering whenever his name was announced on the PA…even when making a tackle 20 yards downfield!

…even as another player was down receiving medical attention.

…even as the rout was on.

Hear this a lot in HS games but “Come on, man!” 👿

  64. BigWave96744 November 8, 2016 9:11 am

    Coach Rolo,
Would you consider making a call out to the 2004 Warriors to come and be on the sideline and have someone like Samson Satele be the honorary captain?

That squad started the year with a terrible lost to Florida Atlantic and then suffered blowouts to UTEP (20-51), Boise St (3-69) & Fresno St (14-70), then went on to beat Idaho, Northwestern & Michigan St to qualify & eventually beat UAB in the Hawaii Bowl.

They never gave up, they Believed!!!

  65. BigWave96744 November 8, 2016 9:27 am

Speaking of the 2004 team, what is brother Jack up to now days?

  66. cocobean November 8, 2016 10:09 am

I watched several SDSU highlight reels on you tube. The things that jumped out at me was the high level of intensity they played with in all phases of the game. Their culture seems to be if you’re on the field you play with the effort and attitude of an angry Chris Naeole. You finish plays and hit until you hear the whistle whether you’re on offense or defense. If you want to see some good examples of linemen and receivers blocking down field or examples of a defense swarming to the ball like a school of hungry piranhas google up you tube for SDSU football high lights.

Keep in mind this is version 6.0 of SDSU football. Their culture has evolved over time. Our culture is version 1.0 of Rolo Ball. Our coaches will need some time to evaluate the program and come up with fixes . I’m willing to wait until version 3.0 is completed before making a judgement.
