Bright and early with Virtual Dave in attendance.
Ma’afala said she is redshirting, is working out with the setters.
practice went from 6 -8 a.m. Freshmen took off to head to summer school class. They’ll be back at 3 p.m. for second sessions.

Don’t ask me how people look, other than Iosia has lovely hands.
Pretty much it was stretching and drills, some team, some by position. Only one who didn’t participate was Burns, who wasn’t feeling well.

Hawaii was the unanimous choice to repeat as Big West volleyball champion, according to today’s preseason coaches poll.
the Rainbow Wahine (29-2, 16-0 Big West in 2015) received all nine first-place votes fro 81 points. Long Beach State was second (68 points) followed by Cal Poly (66).
Rounding out the poll were UC Irvine (47), UC Davis (44), UC Santa Barbara (39), CSUN (29), UC Riverside (20) and Cal State Fullerton (11).
Hawaii opens the season in the Chevron Invitational on Aug. 26 against Wisconsin.

Italy up 2-1. US continues to struggle with serving. gave the Italians set point on another SE.

  3. Cindy Luis August 9, 2016 10:10 am

Italy takes Set 4 25-23. US had tied it at 23 but Anderson’s SE gave them match point. Passing again was very poor. Italy much better in transition and the US seemed a step slow when reacting.

Shoji should return to UH asap as the men’s national volleyball team will not make it and there is no excuse for him being there on paid time…..no excuse…..he should take care of his primary responsibility which is the team favored to win the Big West and go deep in the regionals so its really HIS RESPONSIBILITY AS HEAD COACH to be back as he has no more excuse to be at the Olympics anymore……..nothing more and nothing less.

  10. Warriorfan August 9, 2016 7:21 pm

    Hossana another ridiculous comment smh,
coach shoji is there watching and rooting on his sons at a once in a lifetime opportunity for them, end of story! Usa is still not out of it.

  11. Cubicle1126 August 9, 2016 7:29 pm

Shoji is in Rio to watch and support his sons start to finish, and is in no way contingent on how team USA is doing. This is possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity. Imagine if ur kids earned a chance like this, would u pass up the chance to follow and support them? Would u appreciate being chastised for making the decision to do so?

Shoji has given decades to the Hawaii program and its fans. I think we can allow him a mere 2 weeks. Supporting him on this journey is the least we fans can do. The fact that anyone would hold his decision to go to Rio against him is disappointing, and frankly, outright embarrassing …

  12. hollycow August 9, 2016 8:10 pm

Yes, Dave and Mary are in Rio primarily to watch their sons and Team USA VB but there are many other sports they are interested in watching. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for many and probably for them too.

  13. Bleachercoach August 9, 2016 8:30 pm

Yup back again…I don’t about you MEN who has son’s or daughter’s…but if my son or daughter was playing in the Olympics I would be there TOO!! Coach has toiled many (40 plus) years and sacrificed many Fall and Spring time away from his wife and sons….That would be a selfish husband and father not to see and support them as a family at a time like this….I always preach God 1st, Wife 2nd, Sons 3rd, and Career and Job last….The team is in GREAT CARE without him…if I was a player I would want to show and prove to Coach Dave howas much better I got…To me change is good for a little while until the chief maestro returns…I, as a husband, Father, and former coach applaud COACH SHOWING for a very wise and godly decision…

  14. Bleachercoach August 9, 2016 8:33 pm

    COACH SHOJI

  15. Warriorfan August 9, 2016 9:01 pm

Not to mention this is probably kawika’s first and last olympics , erik could still make it in Tokyo though.

  16. tongo August 9, 2016 9:43 pm

Even for the most die heart of wahine fans, family should always be foremost! Dave has earned it after 41+ years. Be real – family first!

The US volleyball teams seem to be struggling. I watched the womens game against the Netherlands. They almost lost that one. The game turned when the Netherlands captain went out with an injury. Up to that point I thought it was over. Seemed to be a different Netherlands team after that.

I found it hard to watch the mens team. Too many mistakes.

  18. rage777 August 10, 2016 4:45 am

I, too, want to say I support Coach Shoji’s decision to go to Rio and watch his sons play. I leave my work all the time to watch my kids performances, talent show, whatever it is. He is no different, and this is truly special being the Olympics. Did Hawaii change since I have left, and family is not the most important thing now?

  19. Cindy Luis August 10, 2016 7:02 am

9 not understanding why you have a problem He is missing PRACTICE
Thank you to all those bringing sanity back to the discussion
But we were taking yesterday about him coming back early should US not make the medal round
Agree that this might be Kawikas last Seems that James Shaw is in the nix but he has been injury prone
Shoji said the had tickets to watch other sports
AVCA pool out Wednesday around 9 am HST

Hawaii ranked #6, highest in a while.

Nebraska is #1 followed by Texas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kansas, Hawaii, Washington, USC, Penn St., Florida/Stanford.

    LBSU is 33rd.

  21. Maverick August 10, 2016 8:49 am

    UH’s ranked opponents:

    Wisconsin 4
    Washington 7
    UCLA 12
    Arizona 31
    LBSU 33

  22. Maverick August 10, 2016 8:50 am

    Full poll:

  23. Maverick August 10, 2016 8:53 am

Interestingly, #11 Stanford has one first-place vote. Nebraska has 60, Texas the remaining 3. There is no poll ballot detail until the next poll on August 29, so I have no idea who thinks Stanford is the best team. Yes, a monster recruiting class, but still all freshmen.

  24. Maverick August 10, 2016 9:05 am

    Other not-so-interesting items:

NCAA tourney opponent Texas A&M is ranked 16, spring match opponent Iowa State is ranked 32.

Six of the top 25 are not from the power football conferences: Hawaii at 6, BYU 13, Creighton 18, Loyola Marymount 21, Western Kentucky 22, and Colorado State 25.

All teams in the top 10 of last year’s final poll also appear in the top ten of this poll, although reshuffled. Wisconsin rose the most, from 10 to 4.
