Wednesday checkin, Pac-12 all-century team

Finding the Pac-12’s all-century team ironic in that
Volleyball hasn’t been played for 100 years in the conference and the players selected played in two different centuries.
And the Pac-8/10/12 has never sponsored the sport.

But I digress

BeachBows or SandBows (which team apparently prefers) did a service day at Papahana Kuaola to plant taro.

Sounds like men’s volleyball benefit raised about $70,000 on Sunday. Big ticket item was the offer to have Coach Milan cook a traditional Serbian dinner at your home.
Went for about $1,400 times 2 since there was such heavy bidding and interest. He agreed to do two dinners.

Couldn’t make it Sunday but was told that Allen Allen’s acceptance speech as distinguish alumnus was very touching. Spoke to Allen briefly Friday. Still one of my favorite all-time players.

Big match in the MPSF Wednesday. Long Beach State at UCLA. Win by the Bruins would give UCLA its first 9-0 start in the rally scoring era.
think Micah Ma’a making early run for freshman of the year. Against SC last Saturday he had 10 kills, 18 assists when splitting time with Hagen Smith at setter, 9 digs, 6 BA.

A little surprised about Tuesday’s win by USC over Pepperdine but the Trojans did play well at UCLA on Saturday
SC wins at home, 25-23, 25-19, 19-25, 21-25, 25-11

I very much enjoyed your article about conference evolution for Men’s Volleyball Cindy. The MPSF schedule reduction next year will be great in terms of UH being able to schedule more home games against quality opponents. Having 2 tournaments would be awesome.

Also, the Big West sponsoring Men’s Volleyball would leave the conferences looking like this (current AVCA rank in parentheses):
    Big West:
    LBSU (2)
    Hawai’i (5)
    UC Irvine (9)
    UC Santa Barbara (11)
    CSUN (12)
    UCSD

    MPSF:
    UCLA (1)
    BYU (3)
    Stanford (6)
    Pepperdine (8)
    USC
    Cal Baptist

There would be 2 powerhouse West Coast MVB conferences and (presumably) with only 10 conference matches UH and the other Big West (and MPSF) teams could schedule out-of conference matches against the MPSF teams in addition to EIVA, MIVA & CC.

A win-win for everyone! Plus the NCAA would probably expand the tournament to 8 teams.

    -Aloha!

Very interesting information Cindy. Thanks for the visual Aloha73g. There sure are plenty of good players to go around. Ps I love the location of UCSD and its nude beach. At least it had one 35 yrs. ago.

I definitely feel there should be more local kids on the all century team. Often times Hawaii’s best prep player was the top player.

    Lawson
    Wong brothers
    Trevor Schirmann
    Fred Robins
    Riley McKibbin
    Micah Christensen
    Kawika Shoji

I could go on….too many left off.

For me the major advantage of men’s volleyball moving into the Big West Conference is that live TV shows will have to be shown to the public at large whether or not they are subscribed to cable, just like the women’s volleyball matches. I can hardly wait.

If the big west does sponsor mens volleyball it will be tough, Long Beach, Irvine and Hawaii right now are recruiting very well and will be top 5 teams for years to come.

Do you think any of those possible future conferences of Big West/MPSF would want to pick up Grand Canyon? I know the MPSF as a whole was not interested due to GCU’s for-profit status. Concordia-Irvine? Aren’t they looking to reach DI eventually? Any other possible schools?

  11. Cindy Luis January 29, 2016 6:10 pm

    5. Black’s is still there as far as I know.

    6. It was a very limited team. Lot of good players left off.

    10. GCU is looking to move out of the MIVA as well as go not-for-profit status.
The issue is having the minimum number of required sports
So at the moment: UCSD, Cal Baptist, Concordia, Grand Canyon.

    new thread up for Friday
