  89. rayson January 22, 2016 11:11 pm

    85. Yeah I thought there were four touches also. Actually, everyone in my section thought they were four touches. Hawaii got lucky on that call.

The Warriors managed to grind out a win, good for them. This will help them as the season goes on. Nainoa needs to be played more. Hawaii did a good job of focusing on their middle attack at the start of the 4th set.

Just as last night, I thought that when the sets were set all the way out to the pins Siki and Kupono were more successful because they had the option to hit line. The left sides like to hit cross court into the gap between the opposing blockers, but that’s not that effective given Hawaii’s anemic middle attack and Grand Canyon’s quick defense.

Give credit to Grand Canyon. They’re a scrappy, well disciplined and well coached team. Really, all they lack is a big gun or two. They looked much better than Lewis did a couple weeks ago.

  90. noblesol January 22, 2016 11:18 pm

Next up next week for the MVB team, UCSD. This is a MPSF conference game. UCSD is currently 1-5 overall, and 0-4 in conference with no set wins in conference. They lost to GCU on their home court, no set wins against GCU either. The UH – UCSD match on Friday is televised, the Sunday game is not.

    In other news:
UCSD is considering going from DII to DI in all sports, and thinks its profile may fit in the Big West:

  91. warriorfan January 23, 2016 12:28 am

Would like Brett and Joe to get a lot of playing time next week. I wonder why Mol didn’t play much after the first set. He had some nice kills and a few blocks in the first set and then didn’t play the rest of the way?

  92. 'ohanaInBellingham January 23, 2016 12:19 pm

I enjoyed the enthusiasm of the students!

  93. Cindy Luis January 23, 2016 3:57 pm

    91. from what I got from Wade and players, they thought Frank created a better matchup against the GCU middle. IMHO better lateral movement when helping block on the pins.
    Mol 2-0-3 in Set 1, 2 BA; Frank 6-0-8 4 BA in Sets 2-4.
Mol still learning to play middle. Frank, a middle in high school, learning to get back to playing after several years away from high level competition. Last played in high school in 2013. a really good athlete, played football, volleyball and basketball for Kalaheo.

  94. Cindy Luis January 23, 2016 4:11 pm

    89. actually thought Grand Canyon played better than Lewis last night. Very scrappy. Agree, missing one or two key players but the local kids all played well and I like the ‘Lopes’ first year coach. As Wade said last night, they’re going to win games in the MIVA.

I wouldn’t call UH’s middle attack anemic. you’ve got two players converting from outside learning the position and one who hasn’t played since 2013. It’s still early and the connection will get better.

    92. the students were great and enjoyed being down on the court. Will have more students the next two matches as part of their class assignments. Glad to be able to give them a chance at being reporters.
