Open Circle

After a one-year hiatus, the Circle of Honor has opened its doors for a new class.

A committee will select the inductees that will be introduced in February.

So, dear readers, any thoughts on those whom should be considered?

Colt Brennan? The 1992 Holiday Bowl team? The 2007 Sugar Bowl team? Michael Carter? Chad Owens? Timmy Chang? Nick Rolovich?

Let us know what you think.

  2. cheepono December 30, 2015 11:08 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

Colt Brennan? The 1992 Holiday Bowl team? The 2007 Sugar Bowl team? Michael Carter? Chad Owens? Timmy Chang? Nick Rolovich?

    All of the above!

  4. PONO December 30, 2015 11:41 am

I wonder if those guys got dropped by BYU with the new staff or if they still held an offer and decided to look elsewhere because of the new staff. Like many have said nothing is a slam dunk until the ink has dried on the LOI.

  6. RICK December 30, 2015 11:57 am

I WAS WONDERING IF THERE HAS BEEN ANY NEWS ON THE COACHES THAT ROLO LET GO HAVE THEY LANDED ANYWHERE?

  7. cheepono December 30, 2015 12:01 pm

pretty sure new coaching staff at byu going in a diff direction. nice thing about chow (one of the only good things aside from academics) and rolo is that they honored previous commitments. shows a lot about their character.

  8. ai-eee-soos December 30, 2015 12:07 pm

ST: If you are awake, you gotta close the previous blog.

  9. Rodney December 30, 2015 12:10 pm

    Chow was high character.
Any word on JJ Is he coaching? Kamahameha
    needs a coach!!lol

  10. bowwar December 30, 2015 12:29 pm

The silence on the new coaching hires and recruits is killing me…I hope some of the hires were delayed because of bowl game commitments. As for recruits, we gotta get a JC QB who can transfer over in January to boost our options. We definitely need more DLs and OLs. Can’t do anything without those “hogs”.

  11. kapakahi December 30, 2015 12:33 pm

Anae wasn’t offered by Oregon State (while Sitake was the DC there), so will his BYU offer still be honored (now that Sitake is the HC there)?

    Hmmm……

“find a wheel and go round round till you hear” a sound — was this a Perry Como song back in the 50’s?

gosh, it sounds like college football recruiting!

  14. kapakahi December 30, 2015 12:45 pm

    #9,

    A JC QB…..with 2 to play 2…..was offered yesterday.

  15. BigFan December 30, 2015 12:49 pm

I’m just checking back. What happened to Kifi’s post about a coach and my response or question about it? It was about Demario Warren.

  16. SteveM December 30, 2015 1:10 pm

pssst, ST– yesterday’s blog entry (and BigFan’s question) is still open.

  22. turfwar December 30, 2015 1:34 pm

Natasha Kai. And who’s the JC QB Kapakahi?

  23. al December 30, 2015 1:35 pm

It would be difficult announcing any new hires before administrative clearing house stamps its approval. I think there’s a sign on the door that says, ” closed for the holidays”

  24. letsgowarriors December 30, 2015 1:36 pm

Stephen Johnson from College of Desert is the JC QB

  25. Bryson December 30, 2015 1:39 pm

The 1992,2001 and 2007 teams as a whole should be inducted

  26. al December 30, 2015 1:43 pm

…and in the hall of shame

    1998 football team
    The Gib “da Fib” Arnold

  27. Ipu Man December 30, 2015 2:07 pm

  29. bowwar December 30, 2015 2:18 pm

#25: Al, don’t forget ol’ Freddy von Appen…

  30. bowwar December 30, 2015 2:21 pm

#25: A couple other potential inductees:
    Bruce O’Neil
    Casey Ortiz
    Norm Chow
    Rick Pitino

  31. Andrew December 30, 2015 2:21 pm

I think the name Gib Arnold should be outlawed from use. Use of such a name should be punishable. Instead we should just refer to him as “he who shall not be named”.

  32. turfwar December 30, 2015 2:28 pm

Thanks lgw. That’s who I was thinking too.

  33. Sofaking_blk December 30, 2015 2:37 pm

Colt should be a no brainier (The GREATEST Warrior EVER!!!)

  34. BigFan December 30, 2015 3:06 pm

#15, SteveM, Maybe ST’s working on some breaking news and maybe that name is part of the breaking news. But that’s censorship, huh??? lol.

  35. Derek December 30, 2015 3:16 pm

June Jones not in the Hall yet? He should be in for sure.

  36. bowwar December 30, 2015 3:22 pm

Ohhhh…I forgot to add the predecessor to the FIB to the Hall of Shame. Frank Arnold needs to be added to the Hall of Shame. Bob Nash would be a nominee too, except he did well as a player and assistant coach before crashing as a Head Coach. Gotta add Hermie Frazier and BJ to the Hall of Shame too.

  37. SteveM December 30, 2015 3:27 pm

    RE: #33
BigFan — your post on yesterday’s blog was at 11:20 am. Note that cheepeno’s #1 post was at 10:59 am here. Todays new blog entry was already up when you posted on yesterday’s….ST just forgot to turn off the comments and point us to this entry.

As for the name–well, if it wasn’t Kifi that brought it up, I would ignore it…so maybe something is brewing.

  38. Boolakanka December 30, 2015 3:40 pm

Rich Miano, Mark Tuinei and Bernard Carvalho.

  39. cappie the dog December 30, 2015 3:44 pm

    Michael Carter

Because he was the first QB to rush and throw for 1,000 yards.

And because he played with broken ribs.

  40. cappie the dog December 30, 2015 3:46 pm

    Clarence “Pop” Dickerson

Because he was the first UH player to be named First Team All-WAC.

  41. BigFan December 30, 2015 4:05 pm

#36, SteveM, thanks for the clarification. I didn’t realize both blogs were open.

  42. z December 30, 2015 4:13 pm

#30 Andrew … how about “that effen piece of ka-ka” or “Benedict” Arnold

  44. C-Pop December 30, 2015 4:39 pm

    Circle of Honor:
    June Jones
    Mark Tuinei
    Colt Brennan
    Bernard Carvalho
    Rich Miano
    Dino Babers

  45. C-Pop December 30, 2015 4:40 pm

    Ken Niumatalolo in yet?

  46. Dano December 30, 2015 4:41 pm

MBB guard Tony Webster, whose teams would impress BYU’s Danny Ainge, coached by Frank Arnold.

  47. cappie the dog December 30, 2015 5:27 pm

    45.

    Tony Webster.

    Oh, yeah.

Back when Webster played, as you know, there were more than two rounds in the NBA Draft.

Webster definitely would have been drafted within the first five rounds, pre-injury.

My memory is a little blurry.

A lot of mid-range jumpers; a lot of slashing to the basket. Not really a long-range jump-shooter like Strayhorn.

Aaron Strayhorn, if I recall correctly, was drafted, but Webster was better, pre-injury.

  48. z December 30, 2015 5:44 pm

    Kanani Danielson
    Emily Hartong

  49. traitmanz December 30, 2015 6:11 pm

    Carl English
    Nick Rolovich
    Timmy Chang
    Kolten Wong
    June Jones
    Colt Brennan
    Natasha Kai
    Kim Willoughby
    Kanani Danielson
    Stephanie Ricketts

    Teams:
    92 FB Team
    07 FB Team
    09-10 Softball Team

  50. What??? December 30, 2015 6:35 pm

IMO Mark Tuinei R.I.P., Dino Babers, and Ken Niumatalolo did not do anything during their UH careers to belong in the Circle. They did do some amazing things after leaving UH.

  51. BigFan December 30, 2015 6:47 pm

ST,where have you disappeared to? Any news on the coaches? The scout board said you’re following couple of coaches. Are those the wr and lb coaches?

  52. cappie the dog December 30, 2015 6:54 pm

Didn’t the women’s soccer team make the post-season after Natasha Kai graduated?

These two things stick in my mind.

    1. Bobby Curran being upset that Kai cancelled out on him.
    2. She didn’t want to participate in some conditioning drill.

  53. Boolakanaka December 30, 2015 6:55 pm

    Glenn Braggs and Martina Cincerova.

  54. cappie the dog December 30, 2015 6:59 pm

    Chuck Crim.

    15-0, as a frosh.

Too bad about giving up the grand slam against Arizona in the finals.

    Francona.

    Grrrr….

He and Colin Tanabe were the main reasons why that 1980 team almost made history.

  55. z December 30, 2015 7:14 pm

    Kelly Majam
    2010 Wahine Softball Team

  56. Willie December 30, 2015 8:28 pm

Watching USC vs Wisconsin. Kessler looks real good at QB, very mobile, quick release and accurate. Extended a lot of plays with his feet. Wittek had to transfer out, he had no chance to beat out Kessler. Don’t understand how Chow compared Wittek to Carson Palmer talent wise. Chow said the same thing about Taylor Graham, he was wrong twice as both are not even close on a talent level.

  57. amela December 30, 2015 8:50 pm

#6 Are you positive Rolovich is honoring all scholarship for returning players? As far as committed players there were only 4 so it wasn’t that difficult a decision, but a good 4 for sure.

  58. Willie December 30, 2015 8:53 pm

Well, just gave Kessler bachi as deflected pass intercepted. Just his 7th int of the season.

  59. Derek December 30, 2015 9:22 pm

Disappointed team of the year: USC. Many had the Trojans to be in the NCAA playoff hunt and had as much talent as anybody in the country. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the right coach and the right offensive coordinator. At USC losing 6 games in a season is totally unacceptable.

  60. cappie the dog December 30, 2015 9:52 pm

    The 1992-1993 women’s basketball team.

You know, the one that went 28-4, and was left out of the field of 48.

The Hawaii Athletics archives doesn’t go back that far, but I remember Hawaii sweeping a nationally-ranked UNLV team, with chairwoman Judith Holland in attendance.

Later, she told Vince Goo those games didn’t matter because they were at home.

Val Agee and Jennifer Hurt are the players that stick utmost in my mind.

When you’re a mid-major, you have to win your conference tournament.

  61. WarriorNY December 30, 2015 11:09 pm

Colt Brennan… there should be no discussion…

  62. pakipark December 30, 2015 11:25 pm

Chuck Crim and Brian Duquette. Ron Nomura.

  63. z December 31, 2015 1:09 am

I guess today will be the who the guys day?

    Who?

  64. Kifi December 31, 2015 2:41 am

Jim Kalili not in the Circle of Honor.yet? How’s about Jim Mills? What about the 2006 FB team?

  65. Sspartan01 December 31, 2015 3:36 am

The Amosa brothers… Great OL anchors

  66. Maddog50 December 31, 2015 4:39 am

Here’s to a great Warrior new year some new solid coaches and commits-still Jonesing for some news on both, hopefully prior to midnight!!!!!

  67. Bryson December 31, 2015 5:26 am

Sounding like Clune to OSU is gonna be official soon, wonder what the after effects that Stephen mentioned could possibly be…

  68. cappie the dog December 31, 2015 6:04 am

I never saw Derek Tatsuno pitch.

But Brooke Wilkins seemed to be every bit his equal.

Lots of 1-0 victories. Just how the softball purists like it. I think Hawaii is responsible for the banning of composite bats. Because it’s Hawaii who holds a major record, and not a Florida or Arizona.

Like Tatsuno, you can still find her name sprinkled here and there in the NCAA Records book.

Leaving a year early, however, probably disqualifies you.

Best all-around softball player: Kate Robinson.
Second best women’s basketball player: Raylene Howard.

  69. Tempmanoa December 31, 2015 7:07 am

June Jones and the 2007 team would be naturals.

  70. David J. December 31, 2015 7:59 am

Good morning!. It’s really nice to hear all this!. But on!. Let’s get our coaching staff fill up and starting getting new recruit in before spring training! Because this is not high school this is collage!. Stop playing around!. By now other new coaches already have there coaching staff done!

  71. Old School Dave December 31, 2015 8:34 am

    From FootballScoop:

Posted by: Chris Vannini on Thursday December 31, 2015

Hawaii: Per source, additions to the Hawaii staff include: Boston College defensive backs coach Kevin Lempa (defensive coordinator), Norfolk State wide receivers coach Kefense Hynson (wide receivers coach), Boston College defensive graduate assistant Sean Duggan (linebackers coach) and Nevada coordinator of recruiting operations Jason Cvercko (recruiting). Keep track of new FBS staffs here.
