Correct me if I’m wrong. I think players on a team placed on NCCA probation can transfer and play immediately.
How was Gib Arnold hired in the first place? It seemed to be like a second coming of Frank Arnold in my opinion. Bad karma all around. On top of this debacle, he bit the hand that fed him! sue the hui that promoted his hiring (we wish) or disbar them from trying to exert any kind of future influence over anything (somebody gotta kick butt ) Ditto for Mr. Chow’s backers.

Of course Gib is pleased – he got free money and a suspension that will never be enforced and gets to paint this as a victory. Nevermind the fact that he burnt almost every bridge he had in the state and did not act in good faith for the University.
One more thing, vote Ige out of office. He couldn’t even sacrifice some spare change from the state’s pocket to help UH-Manoa and Hilo’s athletic budget. Liken it to buying a $1.19 McChicken sandwich cause you couldn’t afford to buy a Big Mac (no pun intended) Gee whiz!!! I’ll bet you backlash would be negligible, except for Issac Choy of course and some non UH grads. Vote them out of office as well. WE ARE THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN FOLKS and athletics can rally communities around the state and make them proud.
UH wanted autonomy which they got. I believe they are allowed xxx money and spend it how they want, which is why the governor says it up to UH. Knowing the wasted way that UH spends money, such as the Gib payoff, Wonder blunder, travel substities, etc., Ige says that UH should better manage things there. Please don’t take this as I am a 100% supporter of Ige, but I would have to agree with his point. Better management of money by UH would mean more money for all.

The compliance official doesn’t ensure compliance, and the punishment delivered… a promotion (just in title or not, whatever). Gotta love it!
The NCAA placed blame both on the UH coaching staff and the athletic department’s compliance office saying, “the case provides a cautionary tale regarding the interaction between coaching staffs and institutional compliance office. The relationship between the former head men’s basketball coach and the director of compliance at this institution was tense to the point of being nearly dysfunctional. Communication between the two was poor and overshadowed by an ongoing personality conflict. Had they worked more collaboratively in their dealings, at least some of the violations in this case would likely not have occurred.”
I give the benefit of the doubt to Amanda Peterson from the wording. If a conflict of personality was at the center of a communication problem, then I think Gib had the most to do about that…no facts…my opinion.

If both are cited in the findings, then both are culpable. If Gib has been sanctioned, then I think Peterson should be as well. How could we have promoted someone with something like this was still hanging over our head. In a moral society, Peterson would offer her resignation, but I’m sure she will linger around till the next screw-up…
Gib did burn every bridge in Hawaii and I hope we never hear his name around this town…and that goes for his kids, as that’s how we ended up giving him a “second-chance” to vindicate his father, Frank Arnold.

Whether it’s done via mutual agreement or via kicking-and-screaming, the end result is all that matters. Both, the coaches and the compliance department failed to do their job correctly.. just my opinion.

Maybe having the Compliance Officer being an Assistant Athletic Director might give more authority to the position. I don’t know the whole story, but don’t lose sight of the fact that it was the coach–not the Compliance Officer–that committed the no-no’s. Judging by Gib Arnold’s actions and attitude toward UH, I would give Peterson the benefit of the doubt.

Amanda should resign. If she could not work with Gib than she should have gone to the AD. She turned in Gib with possible malice in her heart. She not only got after Gib but she screwed the program and the state by not trying to help the situation.

Ige lost me after I spent 5 hours in traffic to get home with the zip mobile fiasco. I did not appreciate his comment “that this was the perfect storm cliche”. Guess what the state created this situation with their incompetence. His comment just showed what kind of political j**k he is.

I know a lot of engineers who categorically are some of the most enthusiastic and generous friends of the UH athletic programs.
So before one says vilifying remarks…
After observing and reading and listening to the things that Ige has said, I wondered if Ige was an engineer by education. Ok not to disparage any engineers but most engineers have a difficult time thinking out of the box. If it does not fit in their schematic than it just doesn’t fit. I googled his educational profile and sure enough he is an electrical engineer. Ok enough from me…..GO RAINBOW WARRIORS tonight against a strong team that beat North Carolina.

I’m just talking out of my ass, I don’t know anything, but I wonder if the conflict has to do with Arnold’s second season when all four of his recruits were academically ineligible. My best guess is that the compliance officer told the ex-coach that these players aren’t students.
And they weren’t.
During the next two seasons, I scoured the web looking for those four names, and none of them ever played Division I basketball.
I also know a lot of engineers who are enthusiastic and generous but I am commenting on their process of thinking out of the box and many have a difficult time if it doesn’t fit. Ige can’t apply that kind of process thinking in government which has so many grey layers and not having the foresight and understanding on what athletics has brought to the table instead not providing state support.

In light of the NCAA report, right thing to do is let go of Paterson and appeal to try to lesson the blow IMO. Three important seniors deserve the right to go to post season, Valdes, Jankovic and Thomas!!
I have a feeling that even if UH self-imposed a one year post season ban, the NCAA would have extended it to two. Although, I think that if UH was a power 5 school, the punishment would not have been as severe as it is now.
RE: Petersen. The story I got was the compliance office caught the altered document before it was submitted. They made Akana redo the paperwork. It was Petersen’s stance that UH should self report this incident to the NCAA even though the altered document was never filed. There was a debate within the A Dept. whether we should self report this or not. Petersen’s point of view prevailed with Ben J’s backing. The next part is just rumor – that Petersen said she would report the incident even if the higher ups decided not to that she was covered by some kind of whistle blower protection.
The question is – should she be commended for doing her job and sticking by her principles. Or be vilified for poking the first hole that may eventually sink the MBB program or at least set it back for several years.

Paterson, not Petersen. I think she should be a guest on Leahey and Leahey. We’ve heard the story from Arnold, BJ and others but it’s still not clear what really brought the program to this point. Kinda want to know what was her relationship with Arnold before the Akana incident and up until his firing.

cocobean: I heard the same story re: the altered document, but not sure how much is truth, how much is spin. The NCAA investigation never addresses it, only that the former assistant initially denied altering the form, then later admitted that he did. Still, the fact that that particular student-athlete did gain entrance to UH (and is now starting), maybe it could have been handled in-house since it was discovered before being processed. By then, the Paterson-Arnold relationship was so contentious that wasn’t going to happen.
There’s an anecdote in the NCAA report that hints at when the fallout between Paterson and Arnold started, but you can find out if you’re really interested. Let’s just say it’s embarrassingly unprofessional.
And, as others have mentioned, the ones who are penalized are the current players and coaches who had nothing with this mess. Sad.
In Kelly Reichardt’s “Wendy and Lucy”, a drifter(played by Michelle Williams), in a small market, shoplifts a can of dog food for her mixed-breed pooch. Like Hawaii, Wendy is poor, not like her analogue, a North Carolina-type, who steals a toaster. It’s only a can of dog food. A grocery clerk sees Wendy slip the can in her purse. He reports it, which ends up with Wendy in jail.
Wendy returns to the market to retrieve the dog, just in time to see the young man who reported her, being picked up by a loved one.
She yells: “Yeah, look at the hero! Look at the big hero!!!” as the car drives away.
Is the compliance officer a hero?
Now Wendy doesn’t have the money to fix her car. The car broke down in Portland, en route to Alaska, where she was going to work in a salmon canning factory.

III. FINDINGS OF FACT
Background
The former head coach’s relationship with the director of compliance
The relationship between the former head coach and the institution’s director of athletics compliance (director of compliance) was tense to the point of being nearly dysfunctional. The former head coach and director of compliance rarely spoke to each other and conducted most of their business by email or through assistant coaches. During one team meeting, the former head coach told the student-athletes that the director of compliance was an enemy who could not be trusted.
The problems began early in the former head coach’s tenure. He gave inaccurate information to a prospective student-athlete based on what he believed to be incorrect information provided by the director of compliance. He described this incident as a “sore spot” that damaged his reputation. He and the director of compliance also clashed regarding arrival times for prospective student-athletes making the long trip from the mainland to Hawaii for official paid visits. During a heated meeting on the issue, in which a supervisor of the director of compliance told her that her position on the issue was incorrect, the director of compliance threw papers containing the itinerary for a visit by a prospective student-athlete. The former head coach, described by a former assistant men’s basketball coach (former assistant coach 2) as “blunt,” told the director of compliance whenever he felt her decisions were wrong.
Due to her strained relationship with the former head coach, the director of compliance at times distanced herself from the men’s basketball program. During the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons she did not conduct any “spot checks” of practices, she never checked on activities of prospective student-athletes during their official paid visits, and she admitted to being “a little lax” on documenting on-campus evaluations of prospective student-athletes. In the same way that the former head coach exhibited animus toward her, she was at times openly hostile toward him. She once told former assistant coach 2 that she would “not lift a finger” to help the former head coach. She reported an NCAA rules violation regarding the men’s basketball program to the conference office without informing any member of the men’s basketball staff. During the investigation into this case, she had phone contact with two former men’s basketball directors of operations (DOBOs 2 and 3, respectively) shortly before they changed their previous stories and implicated the former head coach in NCAA rules violations. Further, immediately before a men’s basketball student-athlete (student-athlete 2) was interviewed by the NCAA regarding this case, the director of compliance told him that she could “take away [his] senior year.” She told student-athlete 2 that she possessed a photograph of him, along with another student-athlete (student-athlete 3), in an automobile belonging to a representative of the institution’s athletics interests (the representative). She did not produce the alleged photo.
The director of athletics at the institution who assumed his position at the beginning of 2013 (former director of athletics 1) learned of the bad relationship between the director of compliance and the former head coach and noted their tense relationship. He spoke to each of them individually and tried to get them to “keep this professional.” He did not otherwise take any steps to improve communication or collaboration between these two important athletics staff members.

Wow. I think this got way out of hand. Both Donavan, and Ben Jay failed on this one. Supervisors need to supervise. It also sounds like Paterson doesn’t exactly seem to deserve a promotion, based on this narrative ( I don’t know her, or if she’s done excellent work in the past ) Hope everything gets straightened out moving forward.
Paterson needs to go, Appeal needs to be made.
If appeal is denied , I hope the players stick with Ganot. Hope Ganot redshirts the ones that have a redshirt year available and have them ready to go for 2017-2018 season.
Let Patterson go and face another lawsuit and payoff.

They could re-assign Paterson to a position where she could do less damage. Maybe that is what they did?

I still remember Frank Arnold’s first team, described as being “Rick Domonkos and the Seven Dwarves”, in either The Honolulu Advertiser or Star-Bulletin.
I believe Matlin has made a mistake with the promotion of Paterson. If the NCAA view of the relationship between Paterson and Arnold was difficult and unprofessional than how does this make her an ideal assistant athletic director. This all brings into queston as to whether she addressed the basketball issue from a personal vendatta against Arnold. Could she also bring the same attitude to other coaches at UH and threasts against other student/athletes as was alleged in the NCAA report.
63. Who cares, should we condone her actions?? She let her hate for Gib Arnold get in the way of doing her job to the fullest for the basketball program according to the NCAA.

Second, I can’t believe that our governor denied the chump-change request of $3 million. Just a couple of examples I thought about today driving into town.
We pay a football coach not to coach $100,000+
We pay a basketball coach who knowingly violated NCAA rules and covered up $700,000 to go away
We pay a chancellor who either can’t read or fails to read closely, contracts under his authority $400,000+
I run in to many athletic department supporters for a variety of sports and more and more of them are taking the position of z (#55 above). They are not buying season tickets and they are not making their donations to the department unless changes are made.
From my viewpoint and experience it is getting harder and harder to solicit donations for UH Athletics.
Answers? I have none other than to keep plugging away on my end to help UH athletes.
I can only hope that UH Athletics does not go the way of many schools that have watered down and downgraded their athletic programs; some of them mandating all sports become ‘club level’ competitions.

Let’s face it, Under Armour apparel doesn’t sell well. Not to mention the location of their store is terrible, plus the online choices to buy are just as terrible. I haven’t bought a single thing that they have offered.
The only thing that I would want (for a gift for my friends) is a Norm Chow t-shirt that says “We’re still chasing championships.” If anybody knows where I can find some, please let me know!!!!!! Anybody that watches the stock market would know that Nike is just killing Under Armour. The only thing that is hot at UA is Stephen Curry’s shoes. Nike’s stock is at an all time high and is also splitting 2 to 1 later this week. And please note: the 4 teams in the national champioonship football playoff (Clemson, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Mich. St.) all have contracts with Nike, as were last years 4 teams (Ohio St., Oregon, Fla. St., and Bama). The rich get richer!!!

something is a miss – how come all of the culprits in this fiasco were not fired from UH? Paterson who was the compliance person which the ncaa stated was part of the problem was not fired; instead she got promoted to assistant athletic director. this unfair. thought they got rid of the in-house attorney responsible for the coaches contracts, firing of Arnold and akana but why not Paterson?

Often times investigations lead to a “lets call it quits” kind of thing and the real happenings don’t get unveiled. Cut the losses and move on. Only thing with student athletes, they the only ones who suffer….imho
NorthShoreFan, the way I understood it was “CC” didn’t think the student-athlete would be forthright and was making it abundantly clear (much like a prosecutor would) that lying to the NCAA investigators would be unacceptable.
Just to drive the point home, she noted that she had photographic proof of his misdeeds.
Her role was to protect the University (not the department or program) from incurring NCAA violations, and I understood that she believed a cover-up was under way.
The fact that there was bad blood between her and the coaching staff likely ensured that she played hardball with the student-athlete to keep the University out of deeper hot water.

it’s no different than mail distribution in an office – what comes in should go out the same day; not a day or 2 later. why the delay and how can it be fixed?
if personalities get in the way, it must be addressed for the betterment of the organization or it can cause unwanted grouping of employees and spread like a cancer.
Yes why is Paterson getting away unscathed ( and with a promotion) while Former coaches all got canned and had their reputations ruined when the NCAA report clearly states that both the coaches and Paterson are at fault.
I find it funny how everyone is forgetting that the reason we were in this mess in the first place is because Gib chose to look the other way and do things in an unethical manner,alot of people are saying Paterson snitched and what not when in reality she was doing her job could it have been Gib’s attitude and lack of respect for her position within the University that caused things to get as bad as they did possibly,but regardless at the end of the day she was doing what her job entitles her to do…which is look out for the greater good of the University and Athletic department
I guess I will get over this latest UH drama and move on. But it is so disheartening to have even more bad news and exposure of UH as an incompetently run institution. I have felt very positive about Dave Matlin and it has felt like we finally had an AD that made sense. But with the recent promotion of an employee who is identified as being part of “the problem” I just don’t know…..just don’t know.

The lesson I took away from all of this is don’t antagonize people beneath you in the AD who are members of union (no matter what the circumstances) unless you are squeaky clean; Pay back is clearly a blood sport in the AD.

Office politics is always a game; especially when when someone feels disrespected: then it becomes a vicious game.
Clearly, “CC” was valued in the AD beyond any problems incurred because she was duly promoted with a nice fat raise for the holiday season.
The NCAA”s decision to release the sanctions on UH on the opening day of our signature tornament is jusr another case of taking it out on the little guy. I dare them to to make the penalty fit the crime and pick a fitting day to make the announcement when it’s North Carolina’s turn to face the music. Keep in mind we had no Level 1 issues and UNC has about 5 at last count……back to the game.

Balko, I understand what you are saying. If CC had so called evidence then why threaten a student athlete? Confront with evidence and follow procedures. There should be no need for threats.
My office once was under “investigation” for a perceived violation of law. It turned out to be a dog and pony show. HPD excused themselves from doing the investigation and the federal department took over. It was a high level decision and action that led to an employee “spilling the beans”.
The feds came in and threatened a clerk with criminal action when all she knew was she was told to do things. Long story short, none of the higher ups who started the pilikia went unpunished and the situation quietly went away. I hold the media responsible for dropping the ball and not following up. This allowed the event to be swept under the rug.
So now it seems everyone walks away but the student athlete pays the penalty. The administration gets to cover the butt. The CC gets promoted. The student athlete loses scholarships and post season play.
Who’s hurting?….Who got punished?
Great win, I’d feel a lot better if UH was planning on appealing the NCAA decision and Paterson was being reprimanded or let go for her part, I do not like her behavior mentioned in the NCAA report.
Despite all the distractions the Warriors kicked some butt tonight! Total team effort!

For the record Under Armor is growing at a pace never before seen in the industry. That is a fact you can check it. Although Nike is the giant including global markets Under Armor is not even in Europe yet-The H-Zone appears to have been losing money before generating a 20k profit. Merchandise from the H Zone and the Stan contribute profits directly to UHAD. The bookstore only pays royalties on trademarked merchandise-it is a paltry sum and contributes little to the UHAD. Regarding merchandise from Walmart etc. you get what you pay for. I have ordered and purchased about 2500.00 from the HZone. Staff has been great service great-the polo shirts wear like iron and some of them are over 5 years old and wear/look like new-regarding this latest issue with MBB. In Illinois where I reside the issues at U of I and Dupage Community College(largest in Illinois) would make UH look like a well oiled machine! My support for the school and the Football program will never be negatively impacted-Go Warriors!!!!

If Hawaii appeals the NCAA sanctions, raising the compliance officer position to an assistant athletic director should be positive. But making that person Amanda is like spitting in the face of the NCAA. Disciplining and reprimanding Amanda and requiring that she take a course in athletic management and professionalism might be a good thing to do if we are promoting Amanda.
The last thing any sane institution would do after all of this would be to “promote” your Compliance Director.
Telling colleagues she will not lift a finger to help the basketball program is derelict of duty & blatant immaturity, in my view.

I figured I’ll share what I posted on Brian’s blog… I’ll sneak out from lurking these past years and say my peace.
I heard on the Sports Animals, that it was reported “Amanda Patterson ‘self-reported’ UH MBB without informing anyone associated with the team to the NCAA”. Looks like personal feelings was the source of this “self-reporting” and that the outcome she wanted was the dismissal or at the very least damage to the MBB team and collaterally the Head Coach. Remember people, that not only does Gib get hurt, but his family and the players, all over “personal differences”… So sad… I didn’t want Gib to be our coach, but to deliberately hurt someones potential livelyhood? Despicable! Even to go as low as threatening a student athlete, with losing his senior year, so he has to report what she wants…

UH needs to clean house on this fire Amanda if this was a private company she would have been history. But in Hawaii’s government we promote those who cannot perform. If she was an ex soccer player this is bad year for Hawaii and soccer.
